Generative AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot are rapidly evolving, fueling concerns that the technology could open the door to multiple privacy and security issues, particularly in the workplace.
In May, privacy campaigners dubbed Microsoft’s new Recall tool a potential “privacy nightmare” due to its ability to take screenshots of your laptop every few seconds. The feature has caught the attention of UK regulator the Information Commissioner’s Office, which is asking Microsoft to reveal more about the safety of the product launching soon in its Copilot+ PCs.
Concerns are also mounting over OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has demonstrated screenshotting abilities in its soon-to-launch macOS app that privacy experts say could result in the capture of sensitive data.
The US House of Representatives has banned the use of Microsoft’s Copilot among staff members after it was deemed by the Office of Cybersecurity to be a risk to users due to “the threat of leaking House data to non-House approved cloud services.”
Meanwhile, market analyst Gartner has cautioned that “using Copilot for Microsoft 365 exposes the risks of sensitive data and content exposure internally and externally.” And last month, Google was forced to make adjustments to its new search feature, AI Overviews, after screenshots of bizarre and misleading answers to queries went viral.
Overexposed
For those using generative AI at work, one of the biggest challenges is the risk of inadvertently exposing sensitive data. Most generative AI systems are “essentially big sponges,” says Camden Woollven, group head of AI at risk management firm GRC International Group. “They soak up huge amounts of information from the internet to train their language models.”
AI companies are “hungry for data to train their models,” and are “seemingly making it behaviorally attractive” to do so, says Steve Elcock, CEO and founder at software firm Elementsuite. This vast amount of data collection means there’s the potential for sensitive information to be put “into somebody else’s ecosystem,” says Jeff Watkins, chief product and technology officer at digital consultancy xDesign. “It could also later be extracted through clever prompting.”
At the same time, there’s the threat of AI systems themselves being targeted by hackers. “Theoretically, if an attacker managed to gain access to the large language model (LLM) that powers a company's AI tools, they could siphon off sensitive data, plant false or misleading outputs, or use the AI to spread malware,” says Woollven.
Consumer-grade AI tools can create obvious risks. However, an increasing number of potential issues are arising with “proprietary” AI offerings broadly deemed safe for work such as Microsoft Copilot, says Phil Robinson, principal consultant at security consultancy Prism Infosec.
“This could theoretically be used to look at sensitive data if access privileges have not been locked down. We could see employees asking to see pay scales, M&A activity, or documents containing credentials, which could then be leaked or sold.”
Another concern centers around AI tools that could be used to monitor staff, potentially infringing their privacy. Microsoft’s Recall feature states that “your snapshots are yours; they stay locally on your PC” and “you are always in control with privacy you can trust.”
Yet “it doesn’t seem very long before this technology could be used for monitoring employees,” says Elcock.
Self-Censorship
Generative AI does pose several potential risks, but there are steps businesses and individual employees can take to improve privacy and security. First, do not put confidential information into a prompt for a publicly available tool such as ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, says Lisa Avvocato, vice president of marketing and community at data firm Sama.
When crafting a prompt, be generic to avoid sharing too much. “Ask, ‘Write a proposal template for budget expenditure,’ not ‘Here is my budget, write a proposal for expenditure on a sensitive project,’” she says. “Use AI as your first draft, then layer in the sensitive information you need to include.”
If you use it for research, avoid issues such as those seen with Google’s AI Overviews by validating what it provides, says Avvocato. “Ask it to provide references and links to its sources. If you ask AI to write code, you still need to review it, rather than assuming it’s good to go.”
Microsoft has itself stated that Copilot needs to be configured correctly and the “least privilege”—the concept that users should only have access to the information they need—should be applied. This is “a crucial point,” says Prism Infosec’s Robinson. “Organizations must lay the groundwork for these systems and not just trust the technology and assume everything will be OK.”
It’s also worth noting that ChatGPT uses the data you share to train its models, unless you turn it off in the settings or use the enterprise version.
List of Assurances
The firms integrating generative AI into their products say they’re doing everything they can to protect security and privacy. Microsoft is keen to outline security and privacy considerations in its Recall product and the ability to control the feature in Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
Google says generative AI in Workspace “does not change our foundational privacy protections for giving users choice and control over their data,” and stipulates that information is not used for advertising.
OpenAI reiterates how it maintains security and privacy in its products, while enterprise versions are available with extra controls. “We want our AI models to learn about the world, not private individuals—and we take steps to protect people’s data and privacy,” an OpenAI spokesperson tells WIRED.
OpenAI says it offers ways to control how data is used, including self-service tools to access, export, and delete personal information, as well as the ability to opt out of use of content to improve its models. ChatGPT Team, ChatGPT Enterprise, and its API are not trained on data or conversations, and its models don’t learn from usage by default, according to the company.
Either way, it looks like your AI coworker is here to stay. As these systems become more sophisticated and omnipresent in the workplace, the risks are only going to intensify, says Woollven. “We're already seeing the emergence of multimodal AI such as GPT-4o that can analyze and generate images, audio, and video. So now it's not just text-based data that companies need to worry about safeguarding.”
With this in mind, people—and businesses—need to get in the mindset of treating AI like any other third-party service, says Woollven. “Don't share anything you wouldn't want publicly broadcasted.”

The director and producer Norman Jewison, who has died aged 97, had a career dedicated for the most part to making films that, while entertaining, included socio-political content. His visual flair, especially in the use of colour, spot-on casting and intelligent use of music, enabled him to raise sometimes thin stories into highly watchable films.
He hit the high spot critically and commercially with In the Heat of the Night (1967), which starred Sidney Poitier as a northern US city police detective temporarily held up in a small southern town and Rod Steiger as the local sheriff confronted with the murder of a wealthy industrialist. The detective mystery plot was perhaps mainly the vehicle for an enactment of racial prejudices and hostilities culminating in a grudging respect on both sides, but it worked well. The final scene, much of it improvised, in which the two men indulge in something approaching a personal conversation, was both moving and revealing.
The film won five Academy awards – for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best editing, best sound and, for Steiger, best actor – and gave Jewison the first of his three best director nominations; the others were for Fiddler on the Roof, his 1971 adaptation of the Broadway musical, and the romantic comedy Moonstruck (1987). In 1999 Jewison was the winner of the Irving G Thalberg memorial award from the academy for “a consistently high quality of motion picture production”.
The son of Dorothy (nee Weaver) and Percy Jewison, he was born and brought up in Toronto, Ontario, where his father ran a shop and post office. Educated at the Malvern Collegiate Institute, a Toronto high school, Jewison studied the piano and music theory at the Royal Conservatory in the city, and served in the Canadian navy during the second world war. On discharge, he went to the University of Toronto, paying his way by working at a variety of jobs, including driving a taxi and occasional acting.
After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree, in 1950 he set off with $140 on a tramp steamer to the UK, where he landed a job with the BBC, acting and writing scripts. On his return to Canada two years later, he joined the rapidly expanding television industry, producing and directing variety shows for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Jewison was spotted by the William Morris talent agency and invited to New York, where he signed with CBS and was given the unenviable task of rescuing the once successful show Your Hit Parade, which was by then displaying signs of terminal decline. He revamped the entire production and took it back to the top of the ratings. He directed episodes of the variety show Big Party and The Andy Williams Show, and specials for Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Jackie Gleason and Danny Kaye.
On the Belafonte special, Jewison had white chains dangling above the stage, an image that displeased many southern TV stations, which refused to screen the show. This was the first indication of his stance on racism.
Success brought him to the notice of Tony Curtis, who had his own production company at Universal, and Jewison began a three-year contract with 40 Pounds of Trouble (1962), starring Curtis. This was followed by the likable but light Doris Day comedies The Thrill of It All (1963), Send Me No Flowers (1964) and The Art of Love (1965).
In 1965 he got out of his contract to make the first film of his choice, MGM’s The Cincinnati Kid, starring Steve McQueen (the Kid) and Edward G Robinson (the Man) and centring on a professional poker game between the old master and the young challenger. He took over the project from Sam Peckinpah, tore up the original script by Paddy Chayefsky and Ring Lardner, and commissioned Terry Southern, the result getting him noticed as a more than competent studio director.
In 1966 he made the beguiling but commercially unsuccessful comedy The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, about a Russian submarine stranded off the coast of Cape Cod. This was at the height of the cold war and gained him a reputation for being a “Canadian pinko”, although it was nominated for a best picture Oscar.
In the Heat of the Night was followed by The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) in which McQueen and Faye Dunaway played thief and insurance investigator respectively and engaged in a chess game that evolved into one of the longest onscreen kisses, as the camera swirls around and around above their heads. The theme song, The Windmills of Your Mind, was a hit and the film a success.
Fiddler on the Roof, with a silk stocking placed by Jewison across the camera lens to provide an earth-toned quality, won Oscars for cinematography, music and sound, and a nomination for Chaim Topol in his signature role of Tevye.
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), his adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera, and Rollerball (1975), starring James Caan, were followed by F.I.S.T. (1978), a tale of union corruption starring Sylvester Stallone as an idealistic young organiser who sells out, and And Justice for All (1979), starring Al Pacino, a deeply ironic portrayal of the legal world.
A Soldier’s Story (1985), based on the Pulitzer prize-winning play and including an early performance from Denzel Washington, dealt with black soldiers who risked their lives “in defence of a republic which didn’t even guarantee them their rights”, and some of whom had internalised the white man’s vision of them.
Moonstruck, a somewhat daft love story but a tremendous box office success and for the most part a critical one, won the Silver Bear and best director for Jewison at the Berlin film festival and was nominated for six Oscars, winning for best screenplay, best actress for Cher and best supporting actress for Olympia Dukakis.
Then came Other People’s Money (1991), a caustic and amusing comedy on the new world of corporate finance and takeovers, in which Danny DeVito played a money hungry vulture, made largely in response to Reagan’s era of deregulation, and The Hurricane (1999) in which Jewison again worked with Washington, who played the real life boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, falsely convicted of a triple murder and imprisoned for years before the conviction was quashed. The latter film aroused controversy over its alleged manipulation of some facts and, despite its undoubted qualities, this fracas probably contributed to it being commercially disappointing.
In the early 1990s, Jewison had begun preparations for a film on the life of Malcolm X, and had secured Washington to play the title role, when Spike Lee gave his strongly expressed opinion that only a black film-maker could make this story. The two met, and Jewison handed over the film to Lee.
Jewison’s last film, The Statement (2003), starred Michael Caine as a Nazi war criminal on the run. He was also producer for films including The Landlord (1970), The Dogs of War (1980), Iceman (1984) and The January Man (1989).
He had returned to Canada in 1978, living on a ranch north of Toronto with his wife Dixie, whom he had married in 1953. There he reared Hereford cattle, grew tulips and produced his own-label maple syrup. In 1988 he founded the Canadian Centre for Advanced Film Studies, now known as the Canadian Film Centre, in Toronto.
He was a confirmed liberal, a man of integrity who turned in his coveted green card in protest at the Vietnam war and saw film not only as entertainment but also as a conduit for raising serious issues.
Dixie (Margaret Dixon) died in 2004. In 2010 he married Lynne St David, who survives him, as do two sons, Kevin and Michael, and a daughter, Jennifer, from his first marriage.

LUNATICS RUN THE ASYLUM
(I began this in late October before the election and don’t want to edit, just to insert what a great victory for Putin in the USA eh? The End starts here. Wilhelm Reich was right. Ever read The Psychology of Fascism? Do.)
See Trump ‘dancing’ on stage for thirty minutes like a tacky cruise ship comedian, hear him say the January 6th 2021 riots were ‘a day of beauty and love’? A deranged liar, a racist, sexual scumbag, mocker of afflictions, disparager of captured soldiers, fondler of his daughter, friend of Epstein…a deeply corrupted, petulantconvicted criminal who should be in prison, or at very least a mental hospital having straitjacketed remedial English lessons. Never let a man with a small dick (or one testicle) be the Fuhrer. And he wants Robert F Kennedy, a loony who was against covid vaccines etc, to be in charge of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention etc. Selling bleach cures?
Doubling down on all his pet eating nonsense and boasting of using ‘the weave’ when he delivers speeches and interviews…rather than the insane ramblings of a bigoted idiot. The ‘weave’? As if he is a master story teller with arcs and plot lines only he can perceive with random surrealist chaos. His weave is a tangled web of malignant and despicable lies. … The orange Don praised Hitler’s generals for their loyalty and ranting about ‘enemies within’ needing to have the army turned on them. General Mark Milley said; ‘(Trump) is the most dangerous person to this country…a fascist to the core’. And sofa humping Vance the Vice called him the ‘candidate of peace’. Christ on a trampoline.
So, a fascist German teams up with a South African racist, what could go wrong? The world’s richest man with the cheapest soul, AKA ‘Free speech’ (unless you disagree with him) Misinformation Musk jumping up and down on stage beside him, crying that if Trump loses, it ‘will be the last election’. As if Kamala is going to go all totalitarian in the USA. Perhaps ‘Dark Maga’ has his eye on a future presidency…his appalling interview with (yes, that’s right, Tucker Carlson the Putin fellating lapdog) was almost all inverse to actual facts and wilfully blind to what DT has actually said and done…and the evil direction to which he moves. So much for ketamine Elon. Trump is the ‘antichrist’.
Musk (who has top secret security clearance in the US) has been in regular contact with Putin since 2022. Baldie recently asked Musk not to deploy the Starlink internet system for Taiwan as a favour to his mate President Xi. Lovely people. Meanwhile Elon started to bribe folk one by one in the swing state Pennsylvania with one-million-dollar lottery gifts. That’s how desperate he is/was for the toupéed man baby to win. At the same time hoping the US will default on its deficit in January because he (and Trump) can make a mint with gold and crypto and become de facto Masters of North America. ‘Normal’ people losing their jobs and savings are irrelevant to these filth-pig ass clowns, yet these are the ones who are the most gullible to Donalds tangled weave and will vote for their own redundancy. Like turkeys voting for Christmas.
The whole crap sack of main Trump fans are deranged. Musk, Vance, Majorie Taylor Greene (she of the ‘Jewish space lasers’ idea) the evil ugly bitch ‘proud Islamophobe’ Laura (‘If Kamala wins, the White House will smell like curry’) Loomer, the grifters and utter cowards of the Republican party, Mike Johnson, Fox News, the corrupted judges, nutjobs R F Kennedy and Alex Jones, Steve Bannon, the Proud Boys aka the KKK, the foul coven of unholy money worshipping evangelicals, those in the UK who support him…Russell Brand, Lawrence Fox, Nigel Farage, Tommy Robinson, Piers Morgan, Boris, and around the world, Orban the toad in Hungary, Netanyahu the corrupt, Kim Wrong ‘Un and of course Putin, who needs his fat Caligula gimp back in power.
By his sycophants and masters, shall thee know him.
One of Putin’s billionaire shoeshine boys, Bidzina Ivanishvili of the Georgian Dream party has promised a ‘Nuremberg trial’ of the opposition parties if he wins. (The recent election seems doubtful but it is always the way that the older and the rural will vote more than the younger. He wants to turn the country into another Belorussia…Many old fools miss Stalin; the good old days of show trials, neighbours denouncing each other…dragged screaming into the past.
China and India continue to buy Russian oil and gas and thus support the orc invasion, London is still laundering oligarch money, Iran sent attack drones and ballistic missiles to Russia…who then complain about the West sending munitions. Both sides fighting a proxy war, seems safer that way for the rest of us than going nuclear. So far. Putin has sent the first of a possible ten thousand north Korean troops to be cannon fodder in Ukraine as well as early release for Russian prisoners of all ages if they fight. And as for the Middle East…. Arg.
Arg. Perhaps it is because this year I finally realised how old I am/appear to be, and all which that entails…and am projecting my sense of dread into apocalyptic visions of total dystopia. BUT. It really does seem as if the dark forces are coalescing and metastasizing all over the world. The Bastards will never earn respect through fear but will be increasingly paranoid power mad energy vampires seeking complete control. Full spectrum dominance indeed. And all the Ego Immortals will live forever on a Musk space station, uploaded as cyber souls in a virtual paradise with E Lon as The Creator. What is left of humanity will be enslaved (to an even greater degree than before), working to extract the very last goodness from the planet to build the machines…rhodium in its high-speed state and white powder gold and etc. Arg.
All those who fell for the con trick of ‘it’s us against the Illuminati/New World Order and the corrupt old system’, who voted against their democracies and for the axe, will be confused to find themselves in a corrupt system of a real New World Order where their lives have blatantly zero value other than as slaves. A planet run by types such as Putin, Xi, Trump and Musk. The twisted, evil and insane men will spin this globe into a nightmare holocaust of oblivion. So, congratulations suckers. Here is your world, now eat your own excrement.
‘Better the pride that resides in a citizen of the world, than the pride that divides when a cloth or rag is unfurled’. Neil Peart. Damn right. And no religions too.
Seems likely that my future postings will stick to writing about everything other than politics, religion and totalitarianism. Perhaps a goulash of multicoloured collage stuff from here on out. Diaries, musings, ‘poetry’, memories and recommendations… staying weird but without all the endless ranting. Might be healthier for us perhaps.
Right now (October 31st) I feel the world as we knew it in terms of basic Western democracy is very close to being destroyed by the machinations of the East, but mostly thanks to the greedy scum over here aided by the badly educated drones who yearn at heart for the forced order of tyranny. As long as they feel a ‘purpose’ to their lives. Which will be to serve those who declare themselves their betters, with the liar’s promise of a better life in return for complete acquiescence, obeisance and obedience. Or else.
Nothing seems to have changed much in human evolution, it is the same do-do, just more fake alpha males like scared children seeking total control for their own security. Bastards leading idiots, revolutions turning…into the system. Primate survival updated with weapons of mass destruction and harnessing viruses. Enough money BUYS ‘justice’, rich criminals are never punished, con merchant priests still fool their flocks with utter bullshit to get their cash and bathe in hero worship.
The best minds are ridiculed, mistrusted, absorbed and diluted by the mainstream or worse by the dumbest neophobes. Art, theatre, writing, science, collectively the humanities, regarded with suspicion, too gay, too intellectual, progress is the Devil. Only soundbite Tik Tok bread and circuses reality tv gameshow soap operas are acceptable. Short attention spans are encouraged, so as to blind-side the public to the perpetual ‘find the lady’ con trick perpetuated by the State.
Humans are easy to rile up and manipulate when they are desperate, so to the ruling classes (and those who would be so) it is always worth keeping their citizens and voters on a knife edge of stress via finance, health and existential threats. Those who think Trump will root out the ‘deep state’ blah blah and take power from the rich are going to have a rude awakening from the American Dream, as he will just keep the money where it always stays. With the plutocracy. The billionaire tax dodgers who demand you pay them to exist.
The East has taken its revenge and infiltrated the West to the extent that its own people are turning against themselves in the name of patriotism and ‘God’. Their puppets are numbered heavily among the leaders on the Right and the rising populists…traitors who are selling out their countries for power, status and wealth. The mass who supports them are usually the mentally vulnerable, those who have been encouraged to be scared and angry among the elderly, the young and the working classes, and the middle class who feel their comfortable lifestyle is in danger.
All are being manipulated by actual, genuine enemies to divide and conquer for them. Break up Europe, the United Nations, NATO, Britain and North America…Trigger events to cause a steady flow of endless refugees so all member states are deeply freaked by foreigners. ‘There are no natives anywhere in the world – everyone is from somewhere else – all people are refugees, immigrants or aliens.’ George Carlin
‘Think for yourself, question ‘reality’, question ‘authority’ Practice good mental operational security…critical thinking. Ignoring actual global warming as we bury deeper into virtual reality and tik tok dumbing down with absolute denial, Sidestep the madness, close down and go within. Remain in this world to work but with as much amused detachment as you can manage. The scared children have voted for what they believe will bring security. Not much of that when daddy is crazy. Poison is often part of the cure but Trump is just corrosion. So, over the Rubicon we go. ‘Russia can do whatever the hell it wants’. They will. Their carefully placed and financed useful idiots/ poleznye idiot in high places in the West will take the gold and betray..
So, no more politics from here on out. Enough already. The present is tense, so love, laugh, learn and live, Reconnect. Love again…and remember…
‘Magnetic and gravitational fluctuations appear to cause the majority of occult phenomena and alter brain wave patterns…psychic windows, hallucinations external and mental.’ Stay fine😊

Xover Possibility: Scooby-Universal-Doo
This is a limited crossover series I'm now considering.
Scooby and the gang have teamed up with several celebrities and a few famous characters in taking down ghosts and solving mysteries under WB's commission, but let's see what happens if they end up in the Universal Pictures cyber universe and end up doing…well, pretty much the same formula, except with versions of the Universal animated characters.
Here are some possibilities I thought up.
Franchise: Despicable Me Characters teamed up with: Felonious Gru, Lucy Wilde, and three of the Minions Type of monster/ghost: Chronology: before Despicable Me 3 or Despicable Me 4 Guest Voices: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, and Pierre Coffin Chase scene song: "Chuck Berry" by Pharrell Williams (from Despicable Me 3)
Franchise: the Lorax Characters teamed up with: Ted Wiggins, Audrey, and the Lorax (whom Mystery Inc believes is a mascot) Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Michael Cera, Ashleigh Ball, Danny DeVito and Chris Renaud Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: the Secret Life of Pets Characters teamed up with: Katie, Max, Duke, Gidget, and Snowball Type of monster/ghost: Note: The pets will be able to communicate thanks to a translation device Gru briefly lets the gang borrow Guest Voices: Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet, a Kevin Hart soundalike, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, and Lori Alan Chase scene song:
Franchise: the Road to El Dorado Characters teamed up with: Modern-day lookalike descendants of Miguel, Tulio and Chel with the same names Type of monster/ghost: Stone Jaguar Guest Voices: Kevin Kline, a Kenneth Branagh soundalike, and Rosie Perez Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: Shrek/Puss in Boots Characters teamed up with: Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: ??? Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Wallace & Gromit Characters teamed up with: Wallace & Gromit Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: ??? Chase scene song: a UK rock band song
Franchise: Kung Fu Panda Characters teamed up with: "furry cosplayers" Po and the Furious Five (minus Mantis) Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jack Black, Kari Wahlgren, David Cross, Lucy Liu, and a Jackie Chan soundalike Chase scene song: Dumpling Warrior Remix (instrumental) from Kung Fu Panda 2
Franchise: Megamind Characters teamed up with: Megamind, Minion, and Roxanne Ritchi Type of monster/ghost: Note: Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate and its TV series would be ignored Guest Voices: Keith Ferguson, David Cross, and Tina Fey Chase scene song: "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osborne
Franchise: Mr. Peabody & Sherman Characters teamed up with: Who else? Mr. Peabody and Sherman Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Chris Parnell and a male child actor Chase scene song: "Way Back When" by Grizzfolk
Franchise: Rocky & Bullwinkle Characters teamed up with: Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Kath Soucie, Tom Kenny, and any voice from the 2018 cartoon Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Captain Underpants Characters teamed up with: George Beard, Harold Hutchins, and a reluctant Benjamin Krupp/Captain Underpants Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jay Gragnani, Ramone Hamilton, Jorge Diaz, and either Nat Faxon or Ed Helms Chase scene song: "Captain Underpants" by Weird Al Yankovic
Franchise: the Bad Guys Characters teamed up with: the Bad Guys Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Alex Borstein, and Lily Singh Chase scene song: ?
Franchise: Ruby Gillman Characters teamed up with: Ruby and Agatha Gillman Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Colman Domingo, Sam Richardson, Blue Chapman, Jaboukie White-Young, and Will Forte Chase scene song: n/a
Franchise: Mario Characters teamed up with: Mario and Luigi Type of monster/ghost: Bowser Koopa Guest Voices: Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Jessica Diciccio, and Sebastian Maniscalo Chase scene song: Mario video game music
Franchise: Curious George Characters teamed up with: Curious George and Ted the Man in the Yellow Hat Type of monster/ghost: Guest Voices: Jeff Bennett, Bill Chott, and Rolonda Watts Chase scene song: n/a
I'm not absolutely certain I'll do this, as I'm already committed to other things. In fact, I might give this series idea to someone more qualified to write crossover mysteries. But still, if anyone would like to suggest types of monsters or ghosts Mystery Inc and their new co-detectives would be facing, I could try to think of the episode plots for them. Also, don't suggest the villains' identities unless through private note, otherwise it would kill the mystery.

It'd be a cute sitcom running gag in the "Steve the offscreen husband" AU if everyone who's in on the Steve secret almost say his real name in the company of someone who isn't, so the entire Agent Carter squad start getting creative with random S, R and C words. Jarvis invents a "Captain Ro...Captain Robinson" that Howard has over for dinner every month, Angie says she calls Peggy's husband "St. Grant" because he's so selfless with childcare, Falsworth claims he wanted a "nightcap" at two in the afternoon and blames it on the UK-America time zone difference, Morita insists Peggy employs a babysitter named "Stephanie" that no one's ever met, and so on
Love it! Steadfast commitment to a bit is one of my favourite things. Your brain is a beautiful little garden, Anon.

The Pioneers - "Down at the Club" Original Ska: All the Hits Song released in 1974. Compilation released in 1998. Reggae
Plays: 12.8K+ on Spotify // 74.8K+ on YouTube
Pretty long mid-70s reggae post today! Strap in!
From critic Steve Leggett:
Formed in 1962 by Winston Hewitt and brothers Sydney and Derrick Crooks, the Pioneers were one of Jamaica's finest harmony groups. Hewitt had been replaced by Glen Adams by the time the group began recording for Leslie Kong's Beverley label in 1965, and following a move to Caltone Records in 1967, the group was essentially down to just Sydney Crooks and a newly recruited Jackie Robinson [no, not *that* Jackie Robinson]. Crooks and Robinson, as the Pioneers, scored a big hit with "Long Shot" (produced by Joe Gibbs), a song about a famous Jamaican racehorse. Adding singer George Agard to become a trio again, the group returned to working with Kong, recording "Nana" as the Slickers before scoring big with "Samfi Man" and a sequel to their horse saga, "Long Shot (Kick De Bucket)," again as the Pioneers. The latter track became a huge hit in England, prompting the Pioneers to take up residence there in 1970. Changing their style to reflect a more direct pop approach, the Pioneers had their last big hit with a cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Let Your Yeah Be Yeah."
And that little bio brings us to the mid-70s, which is when this great Pioneers song, "Down at the Club," originally came out. But before we get into that particular song, we first gotta talk about the group whose song they're covering here: legendary R&B / doo wop / soul / pop act, The Drifters.
Originally hailing from New York City, The Drifters were a *huge* staple of Atlantic Records' roster from the early 50s through mid-60s, racking up a total of 33 hits on Billboard's Hot 100 chart within that timeframe. But behind the scenes, there was constant turnover and tumult, as their lead singer would change multiple times after Clyde McPhatter's departure in the middle of 1955. Yet, despite the group's perpetually revolving door, the hits just proceeded to keep on coming anyway...until they didn't.
As the mid-60s wore on into the late 60s, The Drifters' popularity and opportunities continued to dry up. A renewed interest in old pop and rock in the 70s would bring them back to some relevancy, but by that time, they'd broken up and splintered off into multiple groups, all of whom tried to lay claim to the Drifters name. So, naturally, lawsuits followed.
And the ultimate ruling from those lawsuits ended up seeming kinda arbitrary and weird: different versions of The Drifters were allowed to maintain their name in different territories. Johnny Moore, who was the last leader of the group before their messy break-up, was allowed to keep the name in the UK, which is where he and his group decided to move, while other groups carved out different sections of the US.
Now, the overall success of the pre-breakup Drifters in the UK paled in comparison to their showing in the US. Looking at the chart history, they only scored nine hits, and only one of those—"Save the Last Dance for Me," one of The Drifters' biggest hits of all—landed in the top-five, with the rest of them falling outside of the top-ten, and most of that rest landing in the 30s through 50s.
But things then suddenly changed for Johnny Moore's Drifters in the UK during the early 70s. Three singles from the mid-60s were re-released in 1972, and they all managed to chart in the top-ten, with a pair of them peaking all the way up at #3. By this time, they were no longer signed to Atlantic, and new Johnny Moore-led singles were failing to chart in the US, but those UK re-releases in 1972 helped to generate some life for the group in their new home, and the brand new singles that were flopping in their former home happened to flourish in the UK, up until their final single in '76.
And that's where The Pioneers come in, because after The Drifters successfully re-released their 1965 single, "Come On Over to My Place" in 1972, Jackie Robinson, who was doing some solo work at the time, put out his own reggae-infused cover of it within the same year.
And that then eventually led to The Pioneers deciding, as a whole, to pay tribute to The Drifters a couple years later, with a cover of another successfully re-released 1965 single, "At the Club," which The Pioneers titled slightly differently as "Down at the Club."
Listening to The Drifters' version, which, upon its re-release, was one of those songs that hit #3, it already has something of a warm weather vibe to it. So, it seems only natural that a reggae act would eventually cover it.
youtube
Now, I don't know if The Pioneers were the only ones who ended up covering this Drifters hit, but they sure as hell ended up doing an *excellent* job of it. Jackie Robinson stars with his pleasurably soulful lead, which climbs through each verse to its peaking chorus, from which it then gracefully descends. But George Agard and Sydney Crooks also complement Robinson with their own wonderful backing harmonies too. They start off each verse providing a "do" on every other beat, but as Robinson begins to really intensify his own vocal before each chorus, they then change over to these glorious, longer-held "ahhh"s, until it's time for the chorus itself.
The Drifters' version has vocals that back Moore too, of course, and The Pioneers do the same type of" ahhh"s at the same point in the song, but the Drifters' backing vocals aren't nearly as prominent as those of George and Sydney's. With The Drifters' version, orchestral strings and a loud cowbell beat seem to somewhat drown out Johnny Moore's backers, whereas The Pioneers' version doesn't have orchestral strings or a cowbell to begin with, so George and Sydney prove to be far more integral to the whole track. And I think, because of that, and despite what sounds like a much lower production value across the board, The Pioneers' rendition of "Down at the Club" proves to be the superior one.
What particularly sucks though is that this song *is* on Spotify, but it's not easy to find, because it's credited to "Various Artists," and it also skips! 😒 Better than it not being on there in any capacity at all, though, I guess.
Anyway, because of Jamaica's history of lax music copyright laws, there's a *whole* lot of great reggae covers of pop songs that are out there, and while this one didn't take all that much to successfully transform into a reggae tune—because the original version already had some tropicality to it already—it's still definitely near the top of my list.
Can anyone else think of reggae covers that outweigh the original version like this one does?

On this date in the world of Classic rock and r&b music…
March 22nd
2004 - Elvis Presley
A new book claimed that Elvis Presley's ancestors came from a small village called Lonmay in the North East of Scotland. Author Allan Morrison said he'd found evidence that Elvis's great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was married in the village 300 years ago.
2001 - Earl T. Beal
American singer Earl T. Beal with The Silhouettes died. The doo wop/R&B groups single 'Get A Job' was a No.1 hit on the Billboard R&B singles chart and pop singles chart in 1958. The doo-wop revival group Sha Na Na derived their name from the song's lyrics. 'Get A Job' is included in the soundtracks of the film American Graffiti, Trading Places and Stand By Me. The Silhouettes performed in the 1986 movie Joey.
1994 - Dan Hartman
American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer Dan Hartman died aged 43 of a brain tumor in Westport, Connecticut. He was a member of the Edgar Winter Group and wrote the band's hit ‘Free Ride.’ As a solo artists he had the 1978 No.1 dance hit ‘Instant Replay,’ and wrote ‘Relight My Fire’ a UK No.1 for Take That and Lulu and also co-wrote The James Brown song 'Living in America.’ Hartman collaborated with Tina Turner, Dusty Springfield, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Tyler, Paul Young, Living In A Box, Holly Johnson and Steve Winwood.
1984 - Queen
Queen filmed the video for ‘I Want To Break Free’ at Limehouse Studio in London, England. Directed by David Mallet, it was a parody of the northern British soap opera Coronation Street with the band members dressed in drag. Guitarist Brian May later said the video ruined the band in America, and was initially banned by MTV in the US.
1980 - Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart. The track, which was the group’s only US chart topper, was also a No.1 in the UK, Germany, Australia, Italy and in many other countries around the world. Pink Floyd received a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Rock Duo or Group for the song, but lost to Bob Seger's 'Against The Wind.'
1975 - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin were enjoying a six-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Physical Graffiti the group's fourth US No.1 album. On its first day of release in the US, the album shipped a million copies – no other album in the history of Atlantic records had generated so many sales. Physical Graffiti has now been certified 16 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 16 million copies.
1974 - The Eagles
The Eagles released their third studio album On the Border the first Eagles album to feature guitarist Don Felder. Three singles were released from the album: 'Already Gone', 'James Dean' and 'Best of My Love'. A hidden message carved into the run out groove of some vinyl LPs reads: "He who hesitates is lunch".
1965 - The Temptations
The Temptations released their second studio album Sing Smokey. As its name implies, it is composed entirely of songs written and produced by Smokey Robinson, and several other members of the Miracles as well. More importantly, it featured one of the well known Motown releases in its history 'My Girl'.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 04/02/2022 (KSI, The Kid LAROI, Sam Smith/Calvin Harris)
“Flowers” by Miley Cyrus tops the UK Singles Chart for the third week in a row, and it’s kind of a slow one but welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Rundown
As always, we start with the notable dropouts, and other than some recent entries, there aren’t that many, given that notable dropouts are songs exiting the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. We say farewell to “Nobody Gets Me” by SZA – thanks to the three-song rule, which will pop up later, as well as “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna, “Ghost of You” by Mimi Webb and “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy.
What’s filling up the gaps then? Well, we see some bizarre returns for “METAMORPHOSIS” by INTERWORLD at #71 and thanks to... a Fortnite event, “STAY” by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber is back once again at #37 after peaking at #2 in 2021, because... sure, I guess. More LAROI later on. As for our notable gains, we see “Just Wanna Rock” by Lil Uzi Vert at #51, “ceilings” by Lizzy McAlpine at #50 (looking good), “Shut up My Moms Calling” by Hotel Ugly at #47 (not anymore), “Here with Me” by d4vd at #51, “Never Not Gonna Dance Again” by P!nk at #40 (again, more on her later: it’s the week of the residuals), “The Color Violet” by Tory Lanez at #36, “Ready to Fly” by Sub Focus and Dimension at #35, “Lavender Haze” by Taylor Swift at #32 thanks to the video, and sadly, “Players” by Coi Leray at #19.
Welp, that was quick. Our top five once again consists of “messy in heaven” by venbee and goddard. at #5, “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift at #4, “Kill Bill” by SZA at #3, “Escapism.” by RAYE and 070 Shake at #2 (vying for #1 next week with the album release, I imagine) and of course, “Flowers” at #1. Now with that swept out of the way at rapid pace, let’s move onto our batch of new songs.
NEW ARRIVALS
#65 – “Us Against the World” – Strandz
Produced by Strandz and Blueboy
Strandz is a new UK rapper from South London who works closely with his producer Blueboy, with this new track being his breakout single, though he’s been putting out songs since 2017. I kind of had some hope for this given it starts with a chipmunk sample of the 1970 song “Who’s Gonna Take the Blame” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles that sets up a great foundation for this kind of track as Robinson croons of youthful rebellion, which Strandz also raps about in his verse, specifically about his girlfriend that he puts over his friends and his money to face the world together. It helps that Blueboy is a great producer too, with a classic twinkling keys loop that sound straight out of Cam’ron’s back catalogue, and a solid, albeit stiff, groove to come with it. It’s not perfect though, mostly because of Strandz just sounding lacking in passion and not fully confident on this beat, to the point where his little ad-libs in the midst of the chorus sound kind of defeated and it really doesn’t work for this kind of content that needs a more fully formed and focused delivery. The beat doesn’t change that much either, which may be fine because it’s decently confrontational but the same piano twinkle and chipmunk vocal clip will only last a certain time before it gets a tad tiring, and I can see this souring on me more than growing on me... but for now, I suppose it’s got some potential. I’d like to see where both Strandz and Blueboy go from here.
#59 – “TRUSTFALL” – P!nk
Produced by Fred again.. and Johnny McDaid
Welp, I suppose P!nk is raring up for yet another album release and I honestly don’t know how she continues to chart as well as she does considering she hasn’t released anything particularly interesting in around a decade now. Regardless, she’s hired Ed Sheeran’s producers – smart choice – and went full synthpop on this one, wherein she expresses very familiar generic and motivational platitudes of love in a not-at-all compelling metaphor... what a surprise at this point. I remember when P!nk had some grit to her delivery at least, and any of that is stripped out when placed against the oddly confrontational synth beat, that has a really distractingly intense house beat driving it, which just seems like a complete mismatch, especially since the actual synthwork is somewhat minimal, or at least appears as such since it’s very basic and airy. More than anything, I just don’t see the point in this existing, and for someone who used to make some of the most cathartic pop rock in the 2000s, that’s sad, but also sadly expected.
#56 – “Snooze” – SZA
Produced by Babyface, Khristopher Riddick-Tynes, Leon Thomas III and BLK Beats
I stand by that you can tell an album has legs in the UK not by the albums chart but by if it debuts another song weeks after release that isn’t being promoted as a single. “Snooze” seems to be the fan favourite from SOS and it appears that of all producers in R&B, Babyface still has some of his magic touch because this is great. Sure, the drums may be a bit heavy-handed over this wavy blend of keys and guitars, but it’s hardly noticeable when SZA is practically rapping with as much effortless confidence as she can muster about... well, a mutually-loving relationship in which SZA will do anything for this guy. I will say that it doesn’t seem all that mutual, considering SZA goes way over-the-top – she seems to like murdering people but this time it’s for this partner instead of her own self-esteem. In fact, the cracks in this relationship which SZA seems initially lenient about particularly come through in that bridge, where the impulsive thoughts come in showing her insecurities about the relationship, particularly how the guy is putting too much pressure on her when he’s the one not putting the effort in within the relationship. The filtered, Auto-Tune bridge ironically has her most impassioned performance and really won me over with the song, considering that it never renders the rest of that genuine loving feeling a farce as much as it acknowledges that it’s not all peaches and daisies, and that same Auto-Tune filter is all over the backing vocals to show those thoughts come seeping in during and after that final chorus. Maybe I should listen to this album in full after all.
#23 – “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” – Sam Smith, Calvin Harris and Jessie Reyez
Produced by Sam Smith, Stargate and Calvin Harris
I haven’t listened to Smith’s most recent #1 album Gloria – I just don’t care about Sam Smith, and this song doesn’t really convince me on it. I mean, sure, it’s produced in part by Calvin Harris and apart from some backing vocals is essentially a solo cut, so it’s at least coherent unlike the other singles have been, but the disco groove feels particularly cheap, especially with the bass guitar and slightly obnoxious chorus which does not great in Smith’s falsetto and especially not in Reyez’s nasal intermissions which sound oddly mixed and unnecessary, like they plopped in a reference track. The content is fine enough, if not compelling, where Smith is looking for someone to pick up from the club and bring home... but like they say, they’re not the exception: it’s just a kind of dull track with not much to do with itself. I’ll admit that Smith’s harmonies sound great as always and it kind of picks up steam against the strings in the outro, but from that point it’s too little, too late. Also, RuPaul samples in the top 40? We’re at that point? I’m not sure whether to be happy or deeply disappointed.
#18 – “Love Again” – The Kid LAROI
Produced by Cirkut and Omer Fedi
Do you think now that The Kid LAROI is making more serious music and has grown fully out of the emo rap lane that they regret their stupid-looking stage name? The nod to his indigenous Australian heritage is cool and all but why is it Stylised Like THIS? Regardless, this is kind of his comeback single, relying on a frolicking acoustic guitar, almost folk-like, behind LAROI’s typical whining about toxic love-hate relationships, desperately wanting to find love in what clearly shouldn’t work... and yeah, it’s pretty good. I don’t know, maybe the songwriting has gotten tighter in the years since “WITHOUT YOU” – I think it really has, since there are so many hooks to this – or maybe his voice has just gotten less obnoxious, but he shows some restraint here, especially amidst the bass and uncertain backing vocals in the second verse which show a genuine attempt sound design-wise to create a dichotomy between the constant acoustics and the intensity of the relationship being described. Sure, it ends way too quickly, which is disappointing because it seemed like it was gearing up for a bridge, but the fragment that we have is pretty good, if not great. I wish there was more of it, though. It’s still weird to think that only two years ago if that I was calling this guy the white-passing version of Juice WRLD and he’s finally made the full-on Post Malone leap into not even trying to rap. Once again, like with Posty, it’s probably for the best here too.
#11 – “Voices” – KSI featuring Oliver Tree
Produced by Digital Farm Animals and Mojam
This really is a nightmare of a collaboration... you’d think with KSI’s growing efforts to be taken seriously in some regard, he’d make himself less of an easy target for novelty like with this collaboration with enigmatic nuisance Oliver Tree and “Christmas Drillings”, but realistically, he can have fun and do whatever he wants. It just seems like the shadow of him being a YouTuber will constantly ring into the music and often does so very obnoxiously. This is particularly true with this Godawful song, as KSI and Mr. Tree have to layer themselves with a disgusting degree of vocal takes to make them sound listenable, drowning out nearly everything in the mix except a weirdly mastered bass and a couple lone trap hi-hats that have been lost and found in this indie rock percussion. KSI is a better singer nowadays at least, and the lyrics are just generic post-breakup fluff, sure, but it’s so inoffensive to the point of aggravation, especially once the Tree pops up, because his smug pop-punk murmuring has no place on a song already this flat. I just can’t stand this in any way, but it’s still not nearly as bad as it could have been. Regardless, can we not make Oliver Tree a hit maker? Please?
Conclusion
Worst of the Week easily goes to KSI for “Voices” featuring Oliver Tree, mostly for the latter, but it wasn’t a particularly bad week even if it’s not worth comparing to the past few in terms of quality or quantity. I suppose P!NK gets the Dishonourable Mention for “TRUSTFALL” whilst Best of the Week easily goes to “Snooze” by SZA, with an Honourable Mention to “Us Against the World” by Strandz just because I want to see where it goes and I think the sound is onto something that could be big or at least have a semi-revival. Regardless, we’ll see what happens next time with RAYE and... God knows what else. For now, thank you for reading, and I’ll see you next week!

These are the TV shows, books and movies that I most enjoyed throughout the year of 2022, although for books and movies they did not necessarily need to have been released during that year (for TV I kept it to shows that released a new season or premiered in 2022 in the UK where I live). I was able to narrow down TV shows and books to a top 10 but for movies, it is a top 15 since there were too many that I enjoyed to bring it down to 10 - plus I watched Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on New Year's Eve after I made the list, otherwise it would totally be on the list.
