I have a question about the Askin and Yoruichi fight. So what kind of words did yoruichi use that make him really mad ? And also what is your thought about yoruichi sun tattoo in her thigh?(thank u)

That's an interesting question. I didn't actually remember what scene you meant at first and had to go back to poke around their fight. I assume you mean the bit where she first sneaks up on him as he's trying to finish off Ichigo & co. And as it happens there is a little bit of word play (I think?) going on here that gets lost in translation.

This whole back and forth starts with her saying,

"This guy says a lot of weird things... If the other person can't move, why wouldn't you just strangle them?" And he says, "A long time ago, Bambi said that same thing..." and then this line that I have no idea how to translate,

当時もヒイたし今聞いても改めてヒイてるわ

touji mo HII tashi imaki itemo oratamete HII teru wa

and I don't know what HII[ヒイ] means here... Is it just kana in place of a regular Japanese word? Is it supposed to be a loan word? English? German?? Is it a sound, like the sound of frustration(like REEE?), and not a real word at all???

Viz translated this as "cringe" and the shitty old mangastream scanlations called it "pissed off" but the point is, he feels the same about it now as he did then, and it's not a positive feeling. It's not especially relevant to the wordplay anyhow... he goes on to say,

全くデリカシーが 無いったら…… 無えよッ!

mattaku DELICACY naittara…… neeyo~!

really, you have no DELICACY…... None!

as in "to be delicate/to have tact/sensitivity/consideration" But Yoruichi says,

何じゃ "でりかしー" とは 相手を嘗めて かかる事か?

nanja "delicacy" to wa aite o namete kakaru koto ka?

What is "delicacy" to look down on the other person?

And I think(?) this was a pun in Japanese, because the phrase nametekakaro[嘗めて かかる] means "to look down on (someone)/to make fun of/to put down/to treat with contempt/to underestimate" but the text is broken up sort of weirdly so that we read [嘗めて] before we read [かかる].

(On the one hand that makes sense given the size and space of the bubble, but I feel like you don't normally split a phrase in half between lines like that?)

But the [嘗めて] by itself is a less common way of writing [舐めて]: "lick/taste/lap up" which seems to play into the way Askin has to ingest the things he alters lethality of? And sort of tangential to this, the use of the English "Delicacy" here could be a matter of confusion where Askin is talking about a delicate touch, but Yoruichi is taking it to mean some sort of rare food.

Incidentally there is also the following argument about "Style" where Askin insists,

Basically just saying that maybe Bambietta, with her messy indiscriminate Explode style, or Yoruichi as someone very physical and bawdy, might be the types to strangle someone to death, but not him. He prefers the precise and delicate style of his Deathdealing.

And Yoruichi kinda jokingly comes back with, "I don't know this Bambi you're talking about, but what you're trying to say is 'The Way of a Beautiful Woman' right?" And Askin has this final line as he whips out his wacky compact bow thing,

the all kana OSHARE there being, oshare[お洒落]: "fashionable/dressed up/stylish." So, it comes back to "style", but in Japanese and not in English like the rest of his rant. This bit wasn't as relevant but I thought it was an interesting quirk.

Today I learned that there this theme park in Japan called Nijigen no Mori that has a lot of pop culture themed stuff, like, it's got a replica of the Hokage Mount Rushmore from Naruto and you can zipline into Godzilla's mouth, whatever, it's obviously lit, and right now they are doing an event called Bleach: The Nightwalk Warfare where you can pretend to be a Sternritter and run around in the wood, I don' t care, that's not important to me, what is important to me is this:

I see some people talking about Ichigo fighting against the one who killed his mother in TYBW...

You guys remember that Masaki called her power, saw it disappear WHILE STILL STANDING LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED, and that it was Grand Fisher who actually killed her, right?

Like, if her coward of her husband or anyone at all (pretty fucking sure Urahara even Ryuken could feel what was going on...) had appeared to help her, the Auswhälen would have had no other effect on her than taking away her Quincy abilities...

We see in TYBW, Yhwach doing t Auswhälen twice and it has horrible effects on the affected Sternritter. (Robert, who was supposed to be already dead or dying because he was fucking shredded by Senbonzakura, was kinda like completely fucking stripped to the bone!)

But Masaki? No other reaction, physically wise, than a perplexed "What the fuck just happened?" kind of reaction...

It's just another example of Yhwach being a lying fraud.

He told Ichigo he was the one who killed Masaki, but he wasn't... Not really...

you've seen her time to time inviting a male Quincy worker to go to her room just to came out without that guy. it was weird even to you, did he die? it was very likely. but weirdly enough there was time to time where you would caught her staring at you but the moment you taken notice she would look away. you weren't sure if she was judging you or some sort..

you never really knew her that close or anything- you don't even know or friend with any of her friends too! you were almost like a secret admirer of the Sternritter. but thankfully despite walking and all the staring at her you weren't caught red-handed nor you were exposed for liking the same gender. you knew it was weird, knew Yhwach wouldn't allow the relationship between a Sternrriter and a lowly Quincy like yourself. what was your worth to her anyways? you are nothing compare to the Sternritter that you love and held so dearly to about.

until one day suddenly a blond child came up to you and offer you her food, it was a box of some stick covered in chocolate- pocky! you weren't sure why one of the Sternritter like her was talking to you, even worse, why was one of your crush's friend trying to offer you a nice thing like this? so all your did was..kindly refuse the kind offer made by the blond kid. she pulled back the box and eat three of the pocky in one chomp.

"you're {name}, right?" she asked with the pocky stick in her mouth.

"yes, why? is something the matter?" you asked, a bit anxious of why was a Sternritter starting to talk to you.

bambies? like- Bambietta? Bambietta Basterbine? is that what she called her friend group? does the name means that she's the leader of them all? and so you did. Sternritter G, Sternritter T, Sternritter P, Sternritter Z and also your crush were all in the room-

"oh..she did came" the pink head said "told'cha she'll come" the kid said this time "wahhh us girls need to stick together!! I'm so glad ya accept da' invite and came here!!" the Z said with a smile and a giggle coming out of her-

and then there was your crush. "hmph. whatever you guys fucking want. you guys always do what I never told ya ta' do!!" she said before she got up from her bed from sitting there "I'm leaving!" she said as she put on her white cloak and walks out the room as she bump your shoulder. ow. that hurts.

"don't mind her too much, she's always like that" the blondie said as you stood frozen, was that a rejection to you or some sort? it feels almost like it. your chest hurt. that felt like a rejection, does she always knew that you liked her? there's no way right? nobody knew!

but nevertheless you guys actually talked, without Bambietta because she left and never came back. after a while of talking you guys all become friend and you became one of the Bambies automatically. but despite then Bambietta does not seems interested in you at all. always avoiding you and also keeps walking off from her friends the moment you arrive on scene. is really bitter to you

yet the first invasion within the Seireitei have came through and you have to go and fight as a Soldat, covering up your whole body enough to the point that nobody could tell if you're a guy or a girl. you fought and fought and came back within Wandenreich with victory in your hand, but you also got a few wounds here and there- so that was not nice- Giselle noticed onto your wound and she immediately swoons over you

"hey hey lemme heal y-" she was cut off by Bambietta throwing a bomb nearby her making both Gigi's hair and your hair flew to the side, it was a very bad impact and almost made both of you flew but thankfully because Gigi was on top of you you technically couldn't fly.

"oh c'mon Bambi-chan-" "NO! you're just gonna turn ya own friend into nother' zombie! don't think I'm stupid!" she said shouting at the girl as Gigi only frown

"NOW GO!" Bambietta yells, it was a bit confused with you because she never really seems to ever cared about you- but now she do? it was an odd situation. she walked over to you and give you her hand to help you up and you accept it

"ya need bandage? I got some in my room if ya want em'" she said pulling you up forcefully so and looked away. "don't let Gigi touch ya. she can turn ya into a zombie. now go and get some bandage moron! stop waiting around and letting blood spill from your damn wounds dammit!!" she said shouting into your ears this time and you immediately go to her room and grab some bandage to bandage yourself up.

that was a one time odd situation though.

second invasion came through and you go and fight more enemies again- just the same routine but this time everything was done and rain starts to fall upon all of the Soldats as you looked up into the sky to see a hole within the bloody sky of the Seireitei. was this his majesty's doing? probably. but the attention was caught off before Giselle came tapping you on the shoulder as she seems to be..dragging..Bambi.

it was a frightful sight to see and your eyes widen almost immediately. Gigi was seen smiling and- was she not feeling anything? is Bambi dead? if she's dead then why's Gigi dragging her like that?

and every single of your question was answered as Gigi looked over at Bambi and then threw Bambietta at you for you to carry. she was alive..but she also seems- dead? there was also some drooling and some saliva coming down from her mouth- it was disgusting but you still couldn't bare to push away the one you know is your crush. "she's my zombie now! she lost and died within a fight but it'll be so lonely without her in our group..so I decide it was best if I turn her into a zombie!" she said cheerfully like this was a funny and not serious matter. you knew Gigi was somewhat a creep but you didn't knew she could also be this crude and cruel-

Help me, i've been looking at bleach stuff again and suddenly feel that i was too harsh on the thousand year blood war when it first published, and now im desperately scrounging for good byakuya/hisana content.

so with that in mind, what do ya think about the sternritter in bleach? personally i've always felt that for all the cool aesthetics and powers at play, they're just a bit too unsympathetic/monsterous in terms of character writing that it hurts a lot of the drama of the tybw. But also recently I have considered how that was arguably the point in terms of ywach creating an army of metaphorical and literal monsters because the value of their lives mattered so little to him that all he looked for was strength. which... seems somewhat obvious in retrospect but still. idk, i guess all these years later bambiettas fate still unnerves me. and i wasn't even much of a fan of her until all that happened to her.

You asking this on the SAME DAY that I bought six zanpakuto at a con is HILARIOUS timing lmao

The Sternritter are in a sort of weird spot for me. There was always a hint of sympathy from me to them just on the basis of what had happened to so many Quincy by the hands of the Shinigami, and how on top of that many were under the culture Yhwach cultivated of pure-blooded Quincy needing to rule over everyone else as the strongest and if they can't live up to his exacting standards they will be considered just as worthless as impure-blooded Quincy/non-Quincy - for the majority of them it's kinda just a no-brainer that they would end up being as cruel as they are even to each other, after living in what is essentially a dog-eat-dog world filled with Uber Racism. And you can see how deeply some of the Sternritters buy into this, how even being sentenced to death or having their powers stolen from them does nothing to shake their belief in this man who stabbed them in the back. The dogmatism is engraved into some of these characters, to the point where literally nothing will make them ever see Yhwach as anything other than their leader.

Along with that, some of the Quincy, like Bazz-B and Liltotto and others, realize (at least somewhat) how shit their system was once they see how easily they are thrown away after doing everything right (or, if nothing else, never doing anything more wrong than the Quincy Yhwach chose as "the best"); they're willing to work with Shinigami to get justice against what was done to them by a leader they genuinely saw as god.

And in the middle of absolute dogmatism and rebellion, there are ones like BG9 and As Nodt, who seem to follow Yhwach not out of outright loyalty but out of a fear of death itself. Given who they're fighting (literal death gods) and who they both are as characters (As Nodt being someone who induces fear into others, BG9 being a robotic lifeform), it's definitely A Neat Choice to have these two specifically follow Yhwach not out of a sense of loyalty but out of an intense internal fear that they feel Yhwach both alleviates (by giving them the means to avoid death) and induces (by promising to kill them should they fail him).

They aren't all a monolith even with how deliberately isolated they were from pretty much all non-Quincy society, which honestly makes them pretty interesting as a total group.

But, yeah, on the other hand a lot of them don't really have much in terms of individual personality outside of cool one-liners or My Power Is My Personality. And some others have that issue and their power is just fuckin' annoying as shit and makes them inherently unlikeable GERARD. FUCK YOU GERARD HOLY GOD WERE YOU THE ACTUALLY THE WORST QUINCY EVER. There will be Bazz-B and Jugram's immensely interesting dynamic with each other, there will be Bambietta's genuinely tragic fate despite how deeply despicable she was as a character, there will be the Femritters' absolute determination to continue living and not letting anyone including Yhwach kill them... and then there's fuckin'. Pepe, the Bootleg Zommari that Kubo bought on the black market loose in an envelope. Or The Yapper who literally died in a montage and whose name no one gives a shit to remember. Some who really have nothing to them at all despite being elite enough Quincy to be given Schrift at all.

So, like. Overall I actually like them quite a bit? At least definitely as a generalized group. Individually there are some really really good stand-outs here and some really really wet farts there. And Gerard fucking sucks and I hate him

one thing i rlly think doesn't get enough attention w/r/t Giselle is the homosociality of all her relationships with the other femritters. it's not just that she has a place on the all-girls squad of the sternritters - I don't think I need to emphasize on tumblr dot com that she's textually a trans woman - it's that there's Klub Outside WOG to the effect that she's not stealth. and she still gets to join the cutesy mahou shoujo squadron and do girl talk with the other Bambis

Can you do the new sternritter's Vollstandig Name in the new anime?

Oh yeah, I wasn't sure if there had been any kanji released for that but it seems like the Bleach wiki has something up there for them, although they haven't cited their sources, as usual... They cite the chapter and episode they each appear in respectively, but go figure, you guys... the anime appearance does not include t e x t. So no idea where either the kanji or the romanized names came from.(wait did they get the kanji and katakana from Japanese closedcaptioning? Do they include furigana on [cc] in Japan??)

This wound up way longer than I'd intended...

Balbarriel[神の雷霆] phonetically, BA-RU-BA-RI-E-RU[バルバリエル]. So weirdly this is how Japanese defines the name Ramiel/Remiel/Reniel[רַעַמְאֵל] the name of an actual biblical angel, so both Japanese epithets here, plus the original hebrew all translate as "Thunder of God." But oddly it sounds a lot more like Bariel, which is an angel named in the Ars Paulonia, part of the Lesser Key of Solomon, a grimoire foundational to a lot of the surviving legacy of Christian occultism and demonology nonsense.(i.e. It was some nerd's 18th century Pokedex of fanfic and headcanons.) That being said, it has no actual meaning the way biblical angels(Gabriel, Raphael, Ariel, Uriel, Michael, etc...) do, because it's not hebrew and the idiot who made it up in the 1800s obviously didn't know what he was talking about. It is of course the exact same kanji used for her Schrift The Thunderbolt[雷霆].

Azhalbiora[神の死] meaning "Death of God" and written as phonetically A-ZA-RU-BI-O-RA[アザルビオラ]. Other than seemingly a little lazy the name just kinda doesn't make a lot of sense as a name for her power. And once again there is no apparent basis in actual angelic names so it's not like there's context to work with. It has an almost vaguely fake "arabic" sound to it? Like the sort of shit H.P Lovecraft would've come up with?

Pornipora[神の力] I'm sure any weeb worth their salt can recognize the kanji for "power," so it's "Power of God." And the phonetics are POO-NI-PO-RA[ポーニポラ].

Gagael[神の飢え] at last something resembling creative input! "Hunger of God," in which [飢え] is not just directly lifted from her existing Schrift. ([食いしんぼう]: "Glutton/Gourmand." Same root kanji though so they weren't thinking that hard.) And while the phonetics, GA-GA-E-RU[ガガエル] are yet more gibberish, they at least go back to the sort of appropriated hebrew -el[אֵל] meaning "of god" used in the names of the aforementioned biblical archangels.

So, you've probably noticed these all just use the same kanji as the girls' actual Schrifts, so there's nothing terribly clever going on, which isn't too surprising but is kind of a shame no one took the opportunity to get creative with it. (Even the attacks names they peppered into the extended fight scene were a little too goofy and bland for my taste. I mean, come on, giving Lili attacks called Spork and Spife?? Really?)

Are basically all gibberish too, so I can't exactly say the names don't fit a "pattern," since there isn't on, but they still don't feel quite right to me, save maybe Lili's. Hasshein and Aschetonig are at least clearly playing with German-esque phonetics*, and Piskiel, Grimaniel, and Jilliel are all playing into recognizable angelology cliches. (Gudoero/Gudoel might be too, but in a way that's hard to separate it from the clearl intentional "ero" wordplay. It just doesn't work outside of th eJapanese phonetics.) And Tartarforas is just suspiciously close to Tartarus but otherwise doesn't really register to my ear as any language that would make sense in the context of the Quincy's associations...

Wait... The German sounding ones might actually be German after all. Like, bad German, but technically German...

*Asche is a n fact German for "Ash," and Ton is "Clay," in fact Tonig can mean "Clayley" as in "Clay-like" so I guess Gerard's actually is German for "Clay-like Ash"... That's actually kind of cool, and vaguely biblical? Adam being sculpted from clay, and "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" and all that? Huh... Weird I never bothered to actually check that I guess, I just assumed if most of them were nonsense that even the ones that sounded more legit would be too...

Wait... Damn... have I really been slacking this much???

The Haß sound in Hasshein could be the German for "Hate" and although it's not really a ""word"" in a functional sense by itself, hein is a part of the term Freund Hein is a kind of grim reaper where, I guess "Hein" was kind of an old euphemism for the devil for some reason? So, Death personified is the "Friend (of) Hein/TheDevil" but I'd bet the intended reading of Kubo's slapdash German here would be "Hate(s) Death" as is suitable to Askin's whole shtick of narrowly avoiding death.

I'm mad I never sat down and tried to hash those out sooner...

BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Separation episode 2 review

That beginning meeting among Sternritters gave me major flashbacks of Aizen and his meeting with his Espada. Was that intentional? More than likely yes, because of nostalgia reasons and for us to see nothing has really changed; "villains" still making plans how to defeat "heroes". Though, there was one tiny difference and that was the lack of tea. Oh yeah. Something about villains sipping tea when having their villain meeting gives such a sophisticated feeling, (even if they all wouldn't be that sophisticated) yet now...it's all business. After all, the Quincies are here to bring "peace"! I really liked how they made the camera angle move when they showed the meeting among all Sternritters and the top of the table surface was this episode's name. It felt very smooth and seriously gave that villainous meeting vibe.

This episode made me think something, and I'm not sure if it was really ever addressed in the manga, but how long does Quincies live? I know Yhwach is like a special case, but the way Askin talked and all the other implications before that...make it sound like Quincies too can live 100-plus years and still remain in their youthful appearances. Does this mean if they live in the World of the Living, only then they'll age normally like humans do? But as long as they're at Soul Society where is Reishi, it's a different story? Because if we think about the last cour, at least to me it seemed like Ryuuken aged normally. So did Masaki and because they were considered 'elite' Quincies, we can assume they weren't run-out-of-mill ones...so, does the location matter when comes to aging? Or, the fact if Quincies are Sternritters or not? Because we've only seen so far mostly Sternritters' POV of things, it could be they're a special case, but even so...I couldn't help but think that especially when they talked about Quincy King's rising and the time it would take.

And sunflower Mayuri makes an appearance! He really looked ridiculous, but still very loyal to his style: ridiculous but in such a way it was also a smart move. I'm not sure what kind of texture or animation technique the staff used, but the fact Mayuri's (and Nemu's) outfit seemed to be 'alive' was a very neat trick. They could have just gone with yellow and white colors that glow a little bit, but nope! They went over that little extra mile to give Mayuri's and Nemu's outfits that specialty that one would expect and wait for from Mayuri.

But man...working in a place like his lab at the moment, would be one form of torture as it seemed just so...bright. Must be nice, when one doesn't have migraine issues, eh?

Heh, Askin being all '-ck this sh*t, I'm out' toward Mayuri, when he at first measured how much effort it would take to take down Mayuri. xD And then Mayuri slaying back. Talk about two smart people going all 'too much effort' versus 'needs more time to craft such a plan I can crush you fully'. Though, that last look Mayuri gave to Askin...oh boy. He seriously wanted to crush Askin, like the lil' bug he was in his eyes.

Never understood why Toshiro had that cloth wrapped around his head, because earlier he didn't have. It just...ditto. Made me think of Rambo or some sort of other action movie where the "hero" has a bandana around their head...but Toshiro is supposed to be that cool guy, so heat shouldn't be a problem with him, so why? Though considering his opponent is Bazz-B, heat will be soon a problem for him...and yes, I can see the irony, that was before the heat problem, lol.

I must say, I really liked how Rangiku and Toshiro worked together against Bazz-B! I had missed such synergy, and especially Rangiku teasing Toshiro! Rangiku's explanation was a bit over the top, but it was still super cute! Especially when Toshiro clearly resisted his urge to roll his eyes while Bazz-B was just staring in there, probably thinking 'lots of words, I don't get anything!' Lol. But yeah. That was a super cute moment between Toshiro and Rangiku and reminded just how good a captain and lieutenant combo they make~. Unfortunately...it just wasn't enough this time around, despite their brave attempt to go against Bazz-B.

As a side note, I must admit I still find it pretty ridiculous how people explain in the battle against their opponent the 'trick' they're using...that's just begging trouble against them.

That moment with Omaeda and his sister was very touching. Despite the fact, Omaeda has been...well, not my favorite character (and probably either not many other people's), that moment was still touching. A bit of cliché hero talk, but at times those are needed, eh? Especially if a little girl is scared and crying.

Luckily Soi Fon came to the rescue, because while Omaeda's attempt was...well, okay, it wasn't enough. Not to mention, I just loved how Soi Fon acted all badass when she showcased her shunko! And yes, while that wasn't (at least yet) enough, I still liked how Soi Fon ride on her thrill over the fact she had managed to master her own shunko.

What caught my attention was how Soi Fon called BG9 in the subtitles 'freak', while in actuality she called him 'bakemono'. It was a small thing, but because of that, the meaning got a bit changed. While "freak" would have suited BG9, because of what he did earlier to Soi Fon in cour 1, I think 'bakemono' was a bit more suited as it can be translated as a monster, and in a sense, BG9 is exactly that. (Because he is basically a walking weapon, a robot, an entity that shinigami probably hasn't seen ever before.) Even so, despite the light tone difference, both are okay when thinking about the context. But even so...with my limited Japanese knowledge, it just caught my attention. ^^'

And once again, Urahara to rescue! Good thing Mayuri didn't cut him off right away when he heard his voice, since Gotei 13 is in a dire situation and will need all the help they can get.

Hmm, that ending with Ichigo walking toward the torii gate was interesting. I had to google a bit to find out what "irazusando" at the end meant, but I wasn't disappointed when I did!

I found a person on Reddit explaining it like this:

"It means "no entry Sandō".

A Sandō is a path/road leading to the entrance of a Shinto shrine, with a torii (the wooden gate Ichigo is walking towards) marking the origin of the path."

Very interesting. I can't wait to see how Ichigo will make his way to the torii or if will he meet more struggles when going toward it, as why else he would have that wooden sword with him? (I'm just waiting for a jumpscare in here...)
