Could you recommend a biography of Eisenhower please?

There are so many great books of Eisenhower that I'm going to recommend a few of them:

•Eisenhower by Geoffrey Perret (BOOK | KINDLE) Published in 1999, this is one of the best single-volume biographies of Eisenhower, in my opinion.

•Eisenhower in War and Peace by Jean Edward Smith (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) This book is a vast, extensively researched look at all aspects of Eisenhower's fascinating life. It's about as complete of a biography of someone like Eisenhower that could possibly fit in one volume and was published relatively recently (2012).

•Eisenhower, Volume I: Soldier, General of the Army, President-Elect, 1890-1952 by Stephen E. Ambrose (BOOK | KINDLE) •Eisenhower, Volume II: The President by Stephen E. Ambrose (BOOK | KINDLE) This two-volume biography of Eisenhower by legendary historian Stephen E. Ambrose is probably the best-known study of Eisenhower's life. If you're not looking to invest the time that it takes to get through these two big volumes, there is an abridged, single-volume edition of Ambrose's book: Eisenhower: Soldier and President: The Renowned One-Volume Life (BOOK | KINDLE).

•Eisenhower: The White House Years by Jim Newton (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) This is probably the best book focusing solely on Eisenhower's eight years as President. Anyone who wants to know Eisenhower's story almost certainly wants one of the full-fledged biographies covering his military career, but this is a good read for anyone who wants a deep dive on his Presidency.

•Going Home to Glory: A Memoir of Life With Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969 by David Eisenhower with Julie Nixon Eisenhower (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) Again, this is not a full-fledged biography covering Eisenhower's entire life, but it is a tremendously interesting, intimate, and deeply personal focus on Eisenhower's last years, from the time he left the White House until his death in 1969. What really makes this book different is that it's written by Eisenhower's grandson, David, who spent a lot of time with the former President when he left office and retired to his farm in Gettysburg. David Eisenhower (who is the namesake of Camp David, the Presidential retreat in Maryland) is able to give readers a unique look at this giant of the 20th Century, the former Supreme Allied Commander who helped defeat the Nazis and win World War II before becoming President and is all of those remarkable things but also a grandpa. The book is also notable because it's written with David Eisenhower's wife, who just happens to be the daughter of Eisenhower's Vice President and a future President in his own right, Richard Nixon.

Also known early in her career as Rachel Smith-Edwards, Adele was a very popular busty British model who was born in 1969 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. She began her career in the early 1990's as a Page 3 model and also modeled for Ralph Lauren. She began modeling for UK men's magazine photographer Joanie Allum and initially appeared in Mayfair under the name Rachel Smith-Edwards. Appearances in Playboy followed as well as some boy/girl softcore shoots and a couple of more hardcore shoots with her then model boyfriend, including a famous one for Penthouse. She also appeared in various softcore videos up to retirement around 2010.

Read any good books since your last update about your recent reading?

Yes, although I forget when I last shared the books I've been reading, so hopefully I don't repeat anything.

I know that I've repeated this book because I've mentioned it several times over the past couple of weeks, but I can't help but remind everyone again about Steve Coll's excellent new book, The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the C.I.A., and the Origins of America's Invasion of Iraq (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO). It's definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and it's one of the better books I've read in the past 10 years.

Black Sails has been described as Game of Thrones with pirates

If Black Sails kicked off in 2020 instead of 2014, it certainly would have thrown fuel on the raging fire that was TikTok’s sea shanty obsession. The reality is that this TV series aired on Starz from 2014 for four seasons, coming to a close in 2017. So why is everyone talking about it now, a decade after it began?

Black Sails is coming to Netflix very soon, triggering its fans to emerge from the woodwork and promote the show online. ‘I am SO excited for people who’ll be watching this show for the first time,’ one user wrote, with many others recommending the series to fans of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon still a few months away, here’s why you should tune into Black Sails this month.

What Is Black Sails About?

Black Sails transports us back to 1715 – aka the Golden Age of Piracy. Set in New Providence, an island in the Bahamas, we meet the feared Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) who brings a new younger crew member into the fold (‘Long’ John Silver, played by Luke Arnold) as his crew continues to fight for survival and negotiate their space on the island.

Is Black Sails Based On A Book?

Black Sails was written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island (1883).

Is It Based On A True Story?

While Black Sails isn’t based on a true story, it does trace real events. The first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima, a real ship that sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce in Florida (where it still lies). Season two traces the fallout of Urca de Lima’s treasure being stranded in Florida, strictly guarded by Spanish soldiers while pirates prowl the shores. The subsequent third and fourth seasons then look at the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire – a la Pirates of the Caribbean.

Likewise, some of the characters are based on real people. Real pirates fictionalised in the show include:

Anne Bonny (Clara Paget)

Benjamin Hornigold (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)

Jack Rackham (Toby Schmitz)

Meanwhile, Captain Woodes Rogers (Luke Roberts) – who represents the British Empire in seasons three and four – is based on a real English sea captain and slave trader, and subsequently the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas.

Was Captain Flint A Real Pirate?

Captain Flint is a fictional character who was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island. He has since appeared in multiple works of fiction, including A. D. Howden Smith’s Porto Bello Gold (1924), John Drake’s Flint and Silver (2008), Pieces of Eight (2009) and Skull and Bones (2010), and J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy (1904).

Where Was Black Sails Filmed?

Black Sails was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, mainly inside at Cape Town Film Studio. Because the real city is so different today than it was in the 1700s, Nassau – the capital of the Bahamas, located on New Providence island – was built from scratch in a studio over a period of four months, as were two large water tanks to house the series’ two ships. Some scenes were filmed outside in and around Cape Town when new terrain was required, but most of the series was filmed on set.
