Tumblr media
Hi guys !
I know it has been quite a while since I wrote anything on here but I truly intent on catching up on all of what I had planned and more.
Today the show I want to talk about is none other than the fantastic Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I admit that I was kinda late to the party since I started watching the show as they were broadcasting the fifth season but better late than never uh ?!
Let’s start as usual with a synopsis: As we go into the show, we follow around seven New York City Police Department (NYPD) detectives and their precinct who are adjusting to working under their new commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Raymond Holt.
And a little technical presentation:
- Created by : Dan Goor and Michael Schur
- Music composed by : Dan Marocco / Music supervisor : Kerri Drootin
- Main cast : Andre Braugher, Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller.
As mentioned above, the show was created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, who are also behind Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, so they were familiar with the sitcom format and allowed themselves to break the codes of the genre.
It originally aired on FOX from September 2013 to May 2018. They cancelled it after 5 years of good fun, but it was rescued the very next day by NBC, who offered us a final run from January 2019 to September 2021. So it ran for a total of 8 seasons and 153 episodes of about 21 minutes each.
Many people I know are not fans of sitcoms because the laughs, the format and usually the stories are very specific to the genre. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, they have chosen not to use the traditional laughs that can be heard in sitcoms taped in front of a live audience, and for many viewers this changes the appeal of the show. I have to admit that this was a very important point for me personally when I first started watching, as I always felt that the laughs were used to force the audience to react, but were usually unbalanced, as they were often either too late and fell flat, or were right on the joke but covered the sound of the comedian's voice, making the joke inaudible.
But what I want to focus on more with this show is the issues it tackles. In fact, over the course of eight seasons, they've had several opportunities to talk about social issues, and that's what I think makes it stand out from all the other sitcoms I've had the pleasure of watching.
I don't want to go into too much detail about the themes, as I don't want to spoil it for those of you who want to give it a try, so I'll just mention the themes and briefly explain how, as a viewer, I felt immersed in the storytelling and the inclusion of the themes in the characters' plots.
Behind the cases they have to solve, the characters have real conversations that deepen the themes evoked in many episodes. The confrontations between them throughout the series help to develop all the characters and it's interesting to watch as a viewer because it can sometimes bring up an aspect of a subject you hadn't considered, or give you arguments to back up your opinions in real-life conversations.
The first theme, which in itself is the premise of the show, is the justice system and its flaws. Since the main characters of the show are police officers and administrators, it was a topic they had to address from day one. They also address issues that are more specific to police forces, such as the impunity enjoyed by some politicians or high-ranked members of society.
Then, as they have a very diverse cast and awesome writers, they also tackled the inclusion of people of color (with the presence of two black men and two Latina women in the main cast), women (with three women in the main cast) and LGBTQ+ people in police forces and the discrepancies in treatment they receive, whether it be from their hierarchy or from the public. I think their work on these issues is very important to break down prejudices that people may have about police officers, and sometimes even to raise awareness about issues that people may not have too much information about (LGBTQ+ struggles, sexual harassment, etc.).
Since the creators are also behind Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, they have also chosen to call on actors from those shows to appear on Brooklyn Nine Nine whether it be as guests, regulars or even main characters ! I'll drop just a few names in case you know them and are curious :
Chelsea Peretti (main B99 cast and appeared on Parks and Recreation)
Marc Evan Jackson (regular and appeared on The Good Place and Parks and Recreation)
Jason Mantzoukas (regular and also appeared on The Good Place and Parks and Recreation)
Nick Offerman (special guest and also appeared on The Good Place and Parks and Recreation)
Some other actors came from other shows, like the amazing Craig Robinson who also appeared in Arrested Development and The Office and who landed in Brooklyn Nine Nine a specific recurring role that quickly became a fan favorite.
Finally, I'll leave you with the entire soundtrack of the show, it's not the most important part of the show for me, but the use of classic pieces at some key moments is well done and highlights the different moods the characters can go through.
I hope I've at least made you want to give the show a try and I'm open to you letting me know if you do, whether you agree with my views or not, I'm always open to discussion.
Have a great day,
Eli

Stephanie Brown & Kara Zor-El: Queer-Coding💖💜💙
Batgirl (2009) #14 is one of the gayest comics I've ever read, bless Bryan Q. Miller.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That "Oh, hey." was gay as fuck. Secret identity to hide from mom = her bisexuality💖💜💙. Lucky thing Kara was able to get changed so quickly because her mom "has no idea she's bi Batgirl".
Also that "Can Stephanie come out to play" vs "You girls stay out of trouble" is far from subtle bro.
Tumblr media
Their little date then which went from watch a movie to actually hunting vampires.
Tumblr media
"You know how to show a girl a good time..."🥰
cuts to Steph's BEDROOM, both of them having cleaned themselves up. The poster on the wall reads “the dating” too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"We're not as doomed as Dracula said." "I know. Just feels that way sometimes."
AHHH. That's so painfully gay and just painful. They're so definitely more than just best friends but it's all so complicated; their lives are pretty incongruent plus their little nightly adventures are a secret.
At least, they make that deal to give each other a call when they "feel alone" and "don't have criminals to hero at" and the literal US isn't out for their heads and it's presumably nighttime... I wonder what fun they'll get up to🤷‍♀️.
"Did you have a good time with your friend?" "The BEST."
AAAAHHHH. They deserve the world ok?
Also don't worry, Steph's mom found out that she's bisexual Batgirl, and she accepts her. Yay!!!

Stephanie Brown's comic, Batgirl (2009) is getting a re-print! This is super exciting because this is my second favorite comic series of all time and it is very difficult to find in person.
Even back in the early 2010s, you could not find many of these floppies anywhere, and the TPBs go for ridiculous prices now despite being re-released a few years back. DC does not put out very many of these.
If you have any interest in Robins, the Batfamily, or Batgirl specifically, please consider preordering this new collection. It's the first half of her solo and hopefully they will put out a vol. 2 within the next year to go along with it on your shelves!
Let's show DC we want more Stephanie (and Bryan Q. Miller!)
See your preorder options here.

Idk if your requests are open, but what about little Charlie “going missing” and everyone is looking for her, maybe she was trying to do something nice for her mom and she didn’t think everyone would be so worried. I think reader and Joel would have a heart attack 🫠
Thank you for the request!! I loved this idea and I think it opens up such an interesting dynamic with their PTSD that being said, this ended up being way angstier than I thought it was gonna be!! sorry :)
Until I Found You
Pairing: Joel Miller x fem!reader (plus platonic!Ellie Williams x fem!reader)
Summary: this ask
Warnings: allusions to PTSD, angst, the Millers being The Jackson Family, Ellie calls reader and Joel Mom & Dad, Charlie does get found!!
Tumblr media
You had your back turned for two seconds. There's no way it could've been longer. You were talking to the moms of one of Charlie's friends, Mackenzie, as the girls played on the playground. She's expecting another baby in a few months, so you told her about your experience with the doctors in Jackson and your delivery since Mackenzie was born before they settled here. Mackenzie ran breathlessly to her mom and asked what the plan was for dinner. The mention of making dinner reminded you how late in the day it was getting, and you needed to get Charlie home. When you turned to call her back from the playground, she was nowhere to be found.
"Charlie! We need to get going, baby," you say, glancing around to see if maybe she's hiding in the slide or behind one of the nearby trees. "C'mon Charlie, Daddy's gonna be home soon." Normally, mentioning one of her favorite people is enough to get her attention, but there's no movement on the empty playground.
"Was Charlie playing with you, Mackenzie?" Stephanie asks her daughter, and she shrugs.
"We were, but then she walked away. I don't know where she went."
"Walked away? What do you mean? She just left?" You recognize the franticness in your voice and immediately regret directing it at another six-year-old, but you're terrified. Mackenzie shrugs again, and you take off to walk the perimeter of the jungle gym, calling Charlie's name the whole time. If she's on the playground, she's hiding extremely well, but you can't spot her or her mop of brown curls.
You look around the immediate area and find patrolmen trotting by on their horses, coming in from a routine patrol. It's five. The patrolmen switch shifts every day at five. The gates open every day at five. The gates were open, and now you can't find Charlie. Ed, one of Joel's buddies, sees the look on your face and adjusts his hold on the reins to come over to you.
"You alright, ma'am?" He asks, but you can't look at him. Your gaze is locked on the sealed gates and the armed guards in the towers.
"Are there smugglers in town?" You ask.
"I… I think so. I can't be quite sure."
"Find them and search their groups. Nobody comes in or out. Stall the next group of patrolmen going out and tell the towers to be on the lookout for a little girl in a blue jacket on either side of the gate."
"What's goin' on?"
"I can't find Charlie." Your voice shakes as you finally look at him. You're not sure what he sees in your eyes— desperation, anxiety, anger— but it's enough to repeat your orders to the patrolmen he came in with.
"Are you sure she's not just hiding somewhere? I mean, maybe you just haven't looked hard enough." Another patrolman, whose name you don't know, speaks up. Ed gives him a look before the noose of fear can loosen enough for you to yell at the guy.
"She's a Miller," he snaps. "She's one of us. We stop everythin' until we find her. Now go before I beat the shit outta you for asking such a dumb fuckin' question." They stare at each other for another beat before the guy rides off, running toward the guard towers to let them know what's happening. Ed nods at you in silent confirmation and comfort before rushing off. All at once, you hear different voices calling your daughter's name, asking her to come out or show herself. Someone went to track down the smugglers, one went toward your house in case she decided to walk home, and one went back out beyond the gates to see if she somehow ventured outside the walls.
If people didn't know Charlie was missing, they certainly do now. Your mind runs rampant with possibilities. What if an old Firefly or someone from your past found out you were here and kidnapped her in revenge? If they found you, could they have found Ellie and her family? What if she fell and she's hurt somewhere? What if you're too late again? Joel. You need to get Joel. Joel will find her. Joel will help you break out of the nightmares paralyzing you. Joel won't let anything bad happen. Right?
You're about to run to the stables to get Goldie and look for her yourself when a voice calls, "Mom!" You quickly turn to see Ellie walking toward you with Charlie in her arms, still in her blue jacket. You let out a relieved sigh and rush to meet them halfway. You pull both of them into your chest and try to stop shaking.
"Oh my god, Charlie," you say, smoothing her hair down as if to prove to yourself she's real. She wraps her legs around your waist and clings to you. Ellie smiles when she steps back, releasing her sister and looking at you. Finally, your brain clicks that Ellie is here instead of her ranch, and a new pit of anxiety opens in your stomach. "What are you doing in town? Is everything okay? Where's Dina and Jay?"
"Everything's fine. Everyone's safe and at home. One of the sheep has an infection, so I came to get her some medicine. Charlie saw me walking into the store and must've left the playground to get me." She explains in a much calmer voice than you could ever muster, and you nod.
"Mommy, you said last night you missed Bellie, so I was gonna bring her to you as a surprise!" Charlie says, leaning back so you can see her smiling face. She's so proud of her initiative to bring Ellie to you. She was independent and thoughtful, even if you wish her independence at six years old didn't give you a heart attack. You take a breath and smile at her.
"You're right. I did say that," you say. "But, next time, you need to tell Mommy where you're going. You're still too little to run off by yourself, okay?"
"Okay." She agrees, only a little dejected. Another problem for another time when your brain doesn't feel like it's time to fight. You kiss her cheek and hug her again, squeezing her tight. Ellie reaches out to muss Charlie's hair before meeting your eyes over her head.
"I'll call off the search party and find Dad to get everyone home, okay?" She says. You want to tell her she doesn't have to or you can do it yourself, but you're stuck in place, holding a breathing daughter while flashes of holding a still one flash in your mind. You need someone to take care of you. You need to be the weak one for a minute. You need your family. Ellie reads you like a book, nods, and rubs Charlie's back before walking toward the guard towers to deliver the all-clear message and ask someone to trade Joel's patrol shift for tonight.
When she returns, you're still in the same spot with Charlie, who's just a smidgen too big to be held for this long. She doesn't rush you or say anything. She just starts walking, and, as always, you follow, devout in your steps like you were eight years ago.
And just like she did all those years ago, she leads you home with the wisdom of someone far beyond her years. And just like all those years ago, you lack the words to tell her how grateful you are for her. You think you will always fall short of complete and utter articulation when it comes to your girls. How could you ever encompass a love that spans decades, states, realms? You’re not sure you ever can but being led over the threshold of the home you built for them feels like a pretty good first step in trying.

Batman: The Capped Crusader literally introduced my 4 favorite batkids in the same episode and made them all literally adoptable.
Tumblr media
Realistically, I know in the next season, Bruce isn't gonna pop down to the orphanage and grab himself a Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Carrie Kelley AND Stephanie Brown (just two of them at the same time would fucking kill him) but also now I want a batman to have to contend with his 4 most feral children. And they are the most feral of them all.
Also before I begin can I just say I fucking love Jason and Carrie being the sameish age. For years, I have been convinced that if Carrie was in a mainstream universe, she should be Jason's age and that the two of them would be so close they'd basically be twins and this right here is so close it almost feels like vindication.
Now for why these 4 are the most feral batkids and why Bruce having to put up will all of them as Robin at the same time would fucking kill the man.
Richard "Dick" Grayson:
The man may be a genuine himbo but he is also the son of circus performers, so for as much light as there is in his soul there is also a gay wolf telling him to do backflips when he's bored, make puns at every opportunity, touch everything and generally be the most adorable menace you've ever met. Also, Discowing definitely counts as feral behavior.
Jason Peter Todd:
In this universe, Jason was probably put into the system after his stepmom ODed so chances are this isn't a steal-the-wheels-off-the-batmobile kinda Jason but could definitely still be a sneaks-out-of-the-house-to-hang-out-with-Catwoman-and-co or is babysat by prostitutes kind of Jason. (I know for a fact that last one literally happened at least once) Even if you take out the violence and crime, you can not convince me that this Jason is not the kind of kid who wouldn't constantly be getting into trouble because he's always trying to prove himself and eventually have a tragic dead at the hands of the Joker that when he's brought back leaves him jaded, angry and the beautiful problem child we all know and thirst after. Also, he's the only member of the family Alfred allows into the kitchen, so jot that down while you're at it.
Carrie Kelley:
My girl was created by the living curse that is Frank Miller that alone makes her feral. But if you don't know my girl Carrie in the Millerverse got saved from a mugger by batman and imitately decided "fuck pants and my drug addict hippie parents it's time to fight crime in green booty short with a fucking slingshot", was almost imitately begrudgingly taken in by batman, probably dropped out of school, fought a Joker who had suicide bomber child-sized android baby dolls and helped lead a literal underground war on crime with a pseudo-cult of batman themed vigilantes called the Sons of Batman formed by former gang members who became obsessed with the guy after he beat up their former leader a no-neck nipple studded punk humanculous who looks even worse than I'm describing. Every iteration of Carrie Kelley is forged from the mold of a girl who almost reached Logan living with wolves levels of feral behavior, she is insane and I love her.
Stephanie Brown:
Her father is literally bargain bin Riddler because he lost his job as a game show host and she got fucking refrigeratored by Black Mask only 2 months into being robin, she deserves to be a little feral. Every iteration of Steph is one with a right to live life to the fullest weither that means giving Bruce shit over his terrible parenting, memeing on c-list villians like kiteman or just hanging around being a menace this girl is feral. Good for her, good for her.
In summary, Batman: The Caped Crusader should end with Bruce's kids literally killing him off with stress, lmao. Also, the setting is perfect for making Dick Discowing, so DC take notes.

The BKS Screen Adaptation ˖⁺‧₊˚✦
(aka the really fucking dorky thing i've wanted to do for ages.)
Tumblr media
if you like Best Kept Secret and you've wanted to know what i imagine in my mind when i write this is the post for you. i put way too much time into this if i'm being honest, but it was so much fun i hope others enjoy it!!
includes fun things like hypothetical casting and soundtrack !!
SPOILERS FOR BEST KEPT SECRET CHAPTERS 1-25
Tumblr media
ever since i started writing Best Kept Secret it's helped me tremendously to imagine it in more of a cinematic sense. i love movies. i love all of it, the cinematography, the soundtracks, the casting, all of it has always greatly interested me. so that's how i've always pictured bks in my head, as a movie, or more appropriately a single season of television lmao. anyhow, i've been feeling real fucking fried lately and i just started a proper schedule with my meds so i'm exhausted and i wanted to take a short break from writing to put this together, (more writing) this is long and self indulgent but i had a lot of fun with it so who cares i guess.
Tumblr media
The Media Source :
in all honesty i think bks probably wouldn't work as a movie? this might just be the entitled author in me speaking but there is just like, so much stuff? i feel like it wouldn't be properly represented in the 90-150 minute format because there's just too much shit happening. ALSO i write my chapters the way i write my DND sessions, meaning they typically have a prominent ending point that i think translates best in a show format so i'll be presenting this as more of an Max original type beat, 13 episodes ranging from like 50 minutes to 90 in length. (pretty hefty but this is my hypothetical world where i get whatever i want lmao)
Tumblr media
The Casting :
bks has a fair amount of original characters that all exist in my brain and in said brain i visually know what they look like and in y'alls brains you have an idea what they look like. like lowkey if i'm being real in my brain space bks is sort of animated? like in the style of arcane sort of lmao, so i don't really have physical manifestations of them but i have always had actors in mind of who i imagine would play them so here's that.
Tumblr media
Leodall :
i mean if this is my dream hypothetical and i can do whatever i want i think it would be hilarious but also relevant to cast someone sort of silly as leo.
i think that it's important that leo is a little rat bitch by the end but also like he should be just sort of a clumsy disarming guy to start. i get a couple different vibes but like lowkey hear me out.
Jack Quaid??
Tumblr media
like he's sort of just a lanky silly guy but also is capable of doing terrible things, i think he'd be a great leo and would also he'd be able to be disarming and likable at the start. just sort of harmless and nervous (until he isn't)
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Lysa :
honestly the hardest person to cast. i love her dearly because in my brain she's done way more than she's done in bks lmao and it's hard for me to seperate that sometimes but i thought about it for a while and i settled on someone who i think would capture Lysa as i imagine her in my mind.
Stephanie Beatriz :
Tumblr media
she's visually how i imagine Lysa but also i love her so i think she'd be great.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Elaine :
this one has always been a no brainer to me. i'd want an actress who is instantly likable and capable of bringing a character that i've grown very fond of to life. there has only ever been one person that comes to mind when i picture someone playing Elaine.
the mother herself : T'Nia Miller
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elaine & Lysa have been sort of wishy washy in description for two reasons, one being that as the story has progressed and they've developed they've become clearer in my mind, two being that there is so much bks and posting something this big chapter by chapter means sometimes i forget what i've previously said (nobodies perfect lmao) but personally T'Nia Miller is one of my favorite actresses and i think she would 100% do Elaine justice.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Kodo :
this has always been a tough one for me. this is kind of wild but when i started bks i never intended to kodo to be downright evil (idk if i've ever said that before but it's true lmao) i originally intended for him to be more of a harmless idiot? the plot was going to revolve more so around how princess had a lot of internal battles about cheating on a husband who was neglectful at the worst of times but still absolutely harmless.
i realized pretty quickly how much of a fucking bummer that was LMAO. it's hard to write a hot sex scene when the main characters internal monologue is full of guilt, so i VERY quickly made the switch, and it was definitely the right choice, the story needed a villain and i needed to give Kodo some sort of depth so it fell into place pretty quickly. i was also rewatching game of thrones around this time so, surprise surprise, i bet you can guess who i was inspired by. that being said, i don't think Jack Gleeson is the right choice for this role, first off bc that guy should never play a villain again lmao, get him a fucking romcom or something, but also because if i could pick anyone in this hypothetical situation i would pick an actor that is relatively beloved.
kodo is supposed to be really fucking hot (unfortunately) princess isn't interested in him because he's an ass but he's supposed to be pretty attractive, but also at the end of the say he's a prince. like we know he sucks but i would want to cast someone that lowers an audiences expectations and makes them think that he's gonna be chill at first. if you've seen the movie Promising Young Woman (if you haven't drop everything and watch it rn) they do something that i fucking adore, which is casting men that are liked, Bo Burnham, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Max Greenfield, etc. to lower the audiences guards. that movie is jarring for several reasons but i myself fell prey to the casting, i was comforted by actors who i loved and felt a personal pang of betrayal. (great fucking movie, cannot stress this enough)
two actors come to mind for this role, one more than the other but i'm still fond of both.
one choice being : Nicholas Hoult
Tumblr media
the only thing that i don't love about this is that it would be a bit repetitive, we've already seen him in the terrible husband role lmao, but it would be fun to see him be far less redeemable than his character in The Great lol. but also he's fucking phenomenal, there's no doubt in my mind that he would be able to capture the character.
my second choice is gonna be a huge hear me out. like some of y'all are about to be real mad at me but fucking- just give me a second to explain i swear there's a vision here.
my second and preferred choice would be : Josh Hutcherson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
listen listen listen. i adore him. actually my pookie bear ^^
which is exactly why he's fucking perfect??
people who don't know the source material are lulled into a false sense of safety bc he's just a little guy, he's just a silly little guy. and if you do know the source material you're like is that fucking peeta?? did they make kodo cool as hell?? no they did not. they just wrapped him up in a pretty package.
i'm saying lets get this man back to blonde and let him let his acting chops loose, i think he's perfectly capable of playing the nightmare that is kodo harand and i think he's the best choice like let him be evil.
pretty boys can be evil as a treat.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Din Djarin :
i mean, come on, we all know who's being put in this role.
Pedrito :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he's din djarin don't tell me otherwise. this era pedro ^^ is bks din like i didn't make starwars but i did make bks and this is canon bks din lmao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but also like whatever they put in his pedro juice when he was doing plays? i'd get him some of that for this.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Princess :
this is all in my self indulgent fantasy right? then yeah i suppose i'll play the princess, pull a lin manuel miranda and step up, i was in into the woods in highschool so i've got plenty of experience.
in all seriousness i would cast someone who sort of reminds me of myself, i would be lying if i didn't write her as a vague reflection of myself. i haven't really written a reader like that other than her, she's special to me so in a screen adaptation i would want to be sure that she's done justice.
the obvious choice to me is Stephanie Hsu :
Tumblr media
she's a princess, idc. absolutely fucking phenomenal actress (robbed of her oscar btw) and i think that she would be perfect also cause like please cast asian women in things where their entire character isn't built around the fact that they're asian, let them have a character unrelated to that fact PLEASE. she's gorgeous, talented, and charming like she's my bks princess, always has been, anytime i've fancasted bks in my head she's my leading lady.
but also there is a second option that comes to mind which would be the lovely : Simone Ashley
Tumblr media
i haven't been shy about how bridgerton inspired bks. she's the love of my life, another actress where i see her and i'm just like yeah she's a princess, it's a no brainer like that could very well be bks princess.
Tumblr media
The Plot ( things i'd add, keep, or remove ) :
i'd keep most things the same, obviously i'd cut certain things to properly fill the available time
i would go full hbo max privilege, i want steamy fucking sex scenes, the sex is important to the story like let's be real. some of dins growth is shown through sex, the way he goes from being completely in control of things to being more willing to be vulnerable?? that shits important.
i would def add a lysa and elaine plot, they would have a side plot
there isn't really much i'd cut, if anything i'd cut the blowjob in chapter seven lmaoo, just bc that's the only thing i've ever considered changing in the story just bc it's always felt unnatural to me.
Tumblr media
The Episodes :
this section is gonna cover how i would present each episode and also what chapters would be featured in each episode.
also just as a general creative choice i think princess would lowkey be fleabag lmao. like she def talks to the audience cause she's a little silly but also bc her internal monologue is written to be a little funny
Tumblr media
Episode One :
chapter one
chapter two
i think this episode would follow the source material well. i actually really like the first couple of chapters of bks, i think they were a good hook for the story so i would keep things similar to how they're written.
Episode Two :
chapter three
chapter four
same as episode one ^
Episode Three :
chapter five
this would be the din episode, instead of princess talking to the audience i like to think just for this episode he would instead. also i have sort of a specific vision for this.
it's canon that bks din is relatively hard of hearing so i would want this episode to open on him getting ready in his cabin before doing all the flashbacks of his point of view of everything. he's not wearing his helmet for the first few minutes while a song plays and he cuts his own hair, his face is never visible in the shot.
everything else stays the same
this is where i get dorky.
dins internal monologue will convey something that i'm not sure i've properly gotten across in bks LMAO but i've always written a din who feels naked in front of princess and not in a sexy way but in an emotional way. he always feels as if she can see through his helmet and it makes him real fucking nervous around her lmao.
so like lowkey hypothetical ending shot is from out in the hall, princess inviting him in and from behind he isn't wearing his helmet bc metaphors.
Episode Four :
chapter six
chapter seven
chapter eight
i think the focus here would be six and eight tbh, if i'm being honest the rules were supposed to be way more important than they ended up being lmaooo, i just went in a different direction with it so i would maybe change that to something else. the book is still important for chapter 25 so maybe like a contract or something that they both sign.
Episode Five :
chapter nine
chapter ten
chapter eleven
yeah i mean this is me being unoriginal but like if it aint broke don't fix it so like i'd keep a lot of stuff relatively the same
Episode Six :
chapter twelve
chapter thirteen
chapter fourteen
^^ same here
Episode Seven :
chapter fifteen
chapter sixteen
i think that the ending spot would be different here than in the source material, the chapter ends with din asking her to come to the cabin but i think instead i would just end with the kiss and open the next one with the cabin convo
Episode Eight :
chapter seventeen
chapter eighteen
chapter nineteen
this is like the anti angst episode, these chapters should be all relationship building up until the chapter nineteen sex scene which i would want rather tastefully done but still filthy. that's sort of the tagline of this hypothetical show, tasteful and filthy
Episode Nine :
chapter twenty
chapter twenty one
another anti angst chapter except this one has a big bad ending so yknow, big dramatic ending, i honestly think there is no need for 'tasteful' violence. like this should be extremely jarring, like din has been protective to a fault but this is like straight up mandalorian possessive rage like fr get his ass yknow? lets see that blood
Episode Ten :
chapter twenty two
chapter twenty three
chapter twenty four
this would probably be the longest ep in my opinion. twenty two is real fucking hefty but also the lunar markets is gonna be the big surprise set piece i want that shit to be gorgeous like i imagine it being so fucking twinkly and delightful
Episode Eleven :
chapter twenty five
lets keep this one straight from the source material, like just use the chapter as a script yknow?
Episode Twelve :
chapter twenty six
chapter twenty seven
i can't say anything about this because it's not technically written yet lmao
Episode Thirteen :
chapter twenty eight
chapter twenty nine
same here ^
Tumblr media
The Soundtrack :
music is important. we wouldn't have bks at all without music because it was music that inspired me to write in the first place and it's helped the story along since then, every time i get stuck on something plot wise i play music until something clicks. it's always been the secret ingredient for my writing so it would be extremely important to a screen adaptation.
i think it would be fun to have each episode end with a smash cut to the credits with music, i've always been a big fan of that so this section contains music that i'd use for specific scenes but also what song i would want playing at the end.
Tumblr media
Episode One :
end this ep with :
I Can See You (Taylor's Version)
i mean it's a little on the nose but this is lowkey bks anthem so i think it's a solid choice for the ep one ending also it's always fun to end on a pop song yknow?
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Two :
end this ep with :
Honeymoon - Lana Del Rey
another bks anthem, like listen to the lyrics it's crazy, and i think based on the ending of chapter four this would be an appropriate ending song
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Three :
Losing My Religion - R.E.M.
this would be the opening of the episode. din never facing the camera and he would get ready for his day while this plays
end this ep with :
Not Strong Enough - boygenius
this is def his ending song like bks din would cry if he heard this song.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Four :
end this ep with :
See You Again (feat. Kali Uchis) - Tyler, The Creator
this is one of those ones where i'm just sort of like hell yeah. in my minds eye this works, there is a visual here like trust.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Five :
end this ep with :
I'm Your Man - Mitski
mitski is another artist that bks!din would listen to in his cabin while he cries like this is def how he's feeling at the end of chapter eleven
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Six :
end this ep with :
Saturn - Sleeping At Last
with where this one ends i think that something sort of soft is important, a solid instrumental works well here
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Seven :
end this ep with :
Starboy - Vitamin String Quartet
i wanted something a little more upbeat but also sort of on theme and i think this is extremely accurate.
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Eight :
Religion - Lana Del Rey
this is the sex song.
like this is and always has been the song that plays when they have sex without his helmet one for the first time, i consider that to be the first time he's really din with her during sex and this song is straight heat so of course this is what plays during that scene.
end this ep with :
Electric Love - BØRNS
i mean it's a little cheesy but i think it's fun and this episode ends in a happy place so it's neat to have a happy song refecting that yknow?
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Nine :
Like Real People Do - Hozier
i mean, this is the song that inspired the chapters featured in this episode, it's an important song because a lot of bks later on revolves around the need for normalcy, these two just want to love each other like real people
end this ep with :
I Fought the Law - The Clash
i mean like, this is a bit silly but also like i love when a show ends in a dark spot and a hilarious upbeat song plays, like, i eat it up every time and i think this is just so fun lmao like he fr fought the law (im hilarious)
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Ten :
end this ep with :
Lover - Taylor Swift
sort of a calm before the storm song, relaxing ass song before all hell breaks lose in the next episode yknow?
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Eleven :
The Secret History - Kerry Muzzey, The Chamber Orchestra of London
this is our searching for din song. long ass sequence, def longer than it is in the chapter lmao
end this ep with :
Borderline - Tame Impala
god i fucking love this song
but also i feel as though this song has a sense of dread to it that i think is perfect for the way chapter twenty five ends
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Twelve :
this is a hard one to pick definitive music to, there's a lot of music that is relevant to the chapters featured in this episode so here's just like, a cluster of music that i think would be relevant
Skyfall - Adele
The Night We Met - Lord Huron
Eleanor Rigby - Cody Fry
Fourth of July - Sufjan Stevens
˖⁺‧₊˚✦
Episode Thirteen :
My Love Mine All Mine - Mitski
i obviously can't say what this would be in reference to but the last technical scene of bks would end with this song. i think the epilouge would have different music
Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine
i kinda sorta think that the epilogue could be crammed into a montage that could just be a post credit scene to this song.
Tumblr media
that's all, if anyone actually read all of this i will kiss you fr like you're crazy for that and i love you.
if you write fic this was so fun?? like i really do recommend doing this or like a less extreme version of this lol i've been trying to force myself to take a little break from writing but i couldn't think of anything else to do so i did this haha

My IDW Sonic Fancast Part 3:
Tumblr media
I've had some rethinking about Surge and Jewel since I began rewatching Sailor Moon. But there are plenty of others I didn't cover before.
So... here we go:
"D.C. Douglas as Clutch The Opossum” - As a shady business man with a mug that just screams, "I'm bad news," a smooth and calm voice like that of Yoshikage Kira would be perfect. A cadence that would get people to let down their guard with him since he seems mean but sounds so refined. But like Yoshikage Kira, his dapper facade belies a heart of depravity.
Example:
youtube
“Michael Sorich as Nite The Owl” - While a live action role inspired me, Sorich’s performance as Woody in VR Troopers made me think of Nite. He’d be able to capture his jovial demeanor and would work brilliantly with the mounting horror of the Metal Virus in terms of mood shifts in the story.
Example:
youtube
“Amanda Celine Miller/Bennet Abara as Surge The Tenrec” - In Sailor Moon, Makoto Kino was kicked out of her school for defending others against bullies and is seen as a sukeban (delinquent girl) only for Usagi to find she’s good hearted. Amanda Celine Miller was a fan of the character and it shows in her performance as Sailor Jupiter’s new voice actress.
How would this shake out for Surge? Well, for me, I think Amanda’s smooth yet tough tone as Mako would lend itself well for the Tenrec when she’s unapologetically villainous. As if Mako really was the bad girl she was seen as.
However, in the event of Surge turning herself around, Amanda’s performance would be able to mellow out into something still Surge-y but also able to come off more heroic. A real punk if you will.
Examples:
youtube
youtube
“Derek Stephan Prince as Rough and Tumble” - Two for the price of one. Derek's voice for Impmon would fit Rough with his fast talking New Yorker voice. Given it's a Joe Pesci impression, it'd be a good callback to the wet bandits. Badabing-badaboom.
youtube
Meanwhile, the voice of Elgar from Power Rangers Turbo would be a perfect fit for the more slow-witted Tumble.
youtube
"Stephanie Sheh as Jewel The Beetle" - I feel like Sheh's performance as the ditzy Usagi Tsukino would transfer well into Jewel's neurotic sense of order as well as how she can get anxious pretty quick. Give it a bit of a nasally quality and it'd fit perfectly.
youtube
And that's that. Feel free to voice your agreements or disagreements.

this being the second time i’ve been screaming a character is clearly bisexual in a show on fox and then the show is canceled, picked up by abc, and that exact character is revealed to be bisexual literally the next season and the actors imply they’ve been thinking about this for awhile makes me so conspiracy brained. i bet any amount of money that andy samberg wanted jake and rosa to both be canon bi by like season 3 and fox put a hit out on him, stephanie, and andre just to be safe. i bet they were gonna make schmidt and nick bi in canon and have cece enter a long relationship with a woman but fox threatened to shave zoey’s head in her sleep if elizabeth merryweather even let cece mention another woman outside of reagan. i bet the executives watched the finale of house where house and wilson ran off together and started crying screaming and sent fake anthrax in the mail to hugh laurie to scare him off from doing an american tv show again. i bet wentworth miller AND carlos valdes had to be physically stopped from kissing another man on set. fox who else are you silencing i need to know.

Future State:
So this is a qualified opinion based on the fact I have only read the Bat-related titles and have not yet read the Bat book storylines subsequent to this, but my first impression of this is that you are just fine to skip anything in Future State that you don't want to read.
It does contain 'who is the Magistrate'. The Magistrate are a paramilitary force paid for by Mayor Nakano to hunt down 'masks' in Gotham (both capes and rogues). Their major members are called 'Peacekeepers'. If you literally just substitute the current cape-hunting paramilitary force of Peacemakers commanded by Amanda Waller in your mind, you've got the entire effect without needing to read any of it (Also Gotham is indulging in its neon futurism aesthetic, so think Batman: Gotham Knights the game, or just Bladerunner).
I only have time to read one title: Future State: Dark Detective. The A story in this title follows Bruce working undercover to find a way to reveal what's going on inside the Magistrate. The creative team is Mariko Tamaki, Dan Mora and Jordie Bellaire. One of the only stories in the entire set where I would confidently say this was still a solid yarn even out of context.
I'm interested in John Ridley's Fox Family Drama: read the A story of Future State: The Next Batman. Tam's had a relapse (because nobody can track whether or not Tam is supposed to be better or not), Luke's literally at a loose end because of plotting changes, you meet Jace, Tiffany has been aged up by the time jump to effectively be the age she was back pre-Flashpoint, Tanya is angry at the world because reasons (Tam) and Lucius is making bad decisions because ???.
What else do you think is a fun story? Future State: Catwoman is a train heist story with neon futurism aesthetics, which is busy indulging in re-education camp/concentration camp themes with more than a dash of Hunger Games references. Creative team is Ram V and Otto Schmidt (no prizes for guessing why it's a good story hey). Worth it just for Selina and Talia working at slight cross purposes but acknowledging the other has her own goals.
The E plot of Future State: The Next Batman (the Gotham City Sirens) has Ivy, Selina and slave android named Dee-Dee who has broken from her creator. This is fun for me personally because it is the rare concept where Ivy and Selina are bouncing off each other and Harley is nowhere in sight. The characterisation is at best fine, but the GCS vibes are there and fun.
The rare 'look I don't want to read this but it's well written' award: Future State: Harley Quinn. I deeply, deeply do not care about Harley, but if more of Harley's books were written like this, I think I would enjoy her far more as a character. So, recommendation for the 2021 run of Harley Quinn under Stephanie Phillips, I suppose (I am not planning on reading it).
The rest: look, the biggest issue with basically all of the Future State titles is due to being set in media res of an altered future, there's an awful lot of characters with changed personalities and no clear connections as to why they're acting OOC. And I'm a full believer in 'if you show me how the character got there, it's not OOC', but the whole concept of this is we don't get to see how the characters got there. So you're stuck going "why is Jefferson Davis currently a being of pure lightning, this isn't Jakeem Thunder". "has this writer read a single Stephanie Brown story not written by Bryan Q. Miller? (Vita Ayala I have been anticipating getting to your Wonder Woman stuff but wow you can't write Cass or Steph)". "I really wish this story where Dick is based in the bowels of an abandoned Arkham Asylum was leaning more into the Batman RIP/Reborn era storytelling around Dick and Arkham Asylum" and so on.
Characters don't fully track in their storylines between titles. Who's imprisoned when? Who are Two-Face and Croc working with? What hero titles are Cass, Steph, Barbara and Tim using? What costumes are people using? And so on and so forth.
You can really tell it's worked up from existing plots that got some surgery to rewrite them from the initial concept. Damian is Sir Not Appearing for the entire set of Bat titles, which makes sense on one level (given this is based out of scrapped 5G material) but makes absolutely no sense on another. Talia al Ghul is running around the background of at least two stories helping out the Bats, with no explanation given, but Damian can't be thrown into the art of group scenes because???
Like, read Mariko Tamaki, Ram V and maybe John Ridley because they can actually write solid stories and know (or are busy creating narratives for) the characters they're working with. Ridley's busy retconning a huge amount of existing Fox family stories but as it is he's setting up what will be their default for the ongoing future. Skip everything else unless you're feeling completionist (or interested in the Jason Todd-based alternate future title that spins out of this in Future State: Gotham).

I'm back reading Robin and the Making of American Adolescence, and we're officially on the chapter about Carrie Kelley and Stephanie Brown. These quotes are from the chapter introduction, with some notes by me.
"Unlike Dick Grayson, female Robins were never meant to be understood as 'heroes in training' or as the heir apparent to Batman's crusade. Rather, their stories depict fantasies of patriarchal control in which idealized maturity and masculinity are linked through the requisition or punishment of teenage girls' bodies."
O'Connor argues that Carrie Kelley is not as empowering as writers might want you to think in her position as the first woman to be Robin--Kelley largely serves just as the "perfect" foil to Miller's Batman. O'Connor argues that this foil position objectifies Kelley, because this is where her character begins and ends.
"Through the character of Stephanie Brown, creators enact a vicious morality play of what happens to adolescent girls who do not function as perfect foils, who challenge patriarchal order and move 'out of their lane.' Stephanie's characterization as independent and headstrong coupled with her violent, sexualized torture sends the message that adolescent girls who buck the traditional expectations of deference to male authority ought to be punished."
Overall, O'Connor's opening argument is that writers don't use girl Robins to show that girls can be heroes too, but to prop up ideas of masculinity by having Batman be able to tell someone what to do. This is arguably a universal Robin trait--a lot of early Dick was propping up Batman-as-patriarch by having him be young and naive. But while Dick was able to grow and become Nightwing (and eventually Batman) women who are Robin are stuck. And in some cases, such as Stephanie, explicitly punished for not doing whatever Batman-the-patriarch tells her.
Quotes from Robin and the Making of American Adolescence by Lauren O'Connor
