Do You Have ‘Bookshelf Wealth’?
A TikTok home-décor trend has irked some bibliophiles.
By Madison Malone Kircher
Published in the New York Times, Jan. 15, 2024
When it comes to aesthetic trends, social media loves a catchy name.
Cottagecore. Dark academia. Eclectic grandpa.
Now there’s a new entry to the canon: bookshelf wealth.
On TikTok and other digital platforms, there has lately been much ado about people who own a great number of books and — this is critical — have managed to stage them in a pleasing manner.
If you’ve ever seen a Nancy Meyers movie, the look might ring a bell. Warm and welcoming. Polished, but not stuffy. A bronze lamp here. A vintage vase there (with fresh-cut flowers, of course). Perhaps there is a cozy seating area near the floor-to-ceiling display, with an overstuffed couch topped with tasteful throw pillows.
Kailee Blalock, an interior designer in San Diego, posted a video to TikTok last month that sought to define bookshelf wealth and school viewers in achieving the aesthetic in their own homes.
“These aren’t display books,” Ms. Blalock, 26, cautions in the video, which has been viewed over 1.3 million times. “These are books that have actually been curated and read.”
This literary look, she went on to say, goes well with pictures hung willy-nilly on the walls, sometimes even partly blocking the shelves, as well as mismatched fabric patterns and a bit of clutter.
In an interview, Ms. Blalock expanded on her advice. “I think to really achieve the look and the lifestyle, someone has to be an avid reader and has to appreciate the act of collecting things, especially art and sculpture,” she said.
Though Ms. Blalock did not originate the term “bookshelf wealth,” her video has spurred plenty of online discussion. “The day I ‘cultivate’ books instead of buying what I like to read is the day I’ll know I’ve truly failed as a human,” one user commented. Others remarked how bookshelf wealth was less about reading and more about regular old wealth.
Breana Newton, a legal coordinator in Princeton, N.J., who posts regularly about books on TikTok, was one of the people who responded to Ms. Blalock’s video. “I am going to show you bookshelf wealth,” Ms. Newton, 33, says in a video of her own. “Ready?”
She then gives viewers a brief tour of her home, showing books everywhere — on shelves, in overflow piles here and there, and strewed across the bed. Absent is the sense that the rooms have been staged, or that the books were bought with the consideration of how they would look on Instagram.
In an interview, Ms. Newton said that she worried trends like bookshelf wealth encourage overconsumption. This year, she added, she is trying not to buy any new books.
Another critic of the trend, Keila Tirado-Leist, said in a reaction video: “Who does it benefit to constantly have to name and qualify and attach wealth to any kind of style or home-décor aesthetic?”
Ms. Tirado-Leist, a lifestyle content creator in Madison, Wis., likened bookshelf wealth to “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth,” styles that have recently made social media waves.
Still, she was understanding that what drives a home-décor trend like this one is a desire to create a home that feels, well, homey. In another video, she described the idea of layering — that is, slowly acquiring pieces and building up to a finished look, rather than trying to buy a bunch of things all at once in an effort to chase a trend.
“Styling a home takes time,” Ms. Tirado-Leist said.
Another TikTok user put it more bluntly in a response to Ms. Blalock’s video: “Bookshelf wealth does not mean you have books. It means you have built-ins.”

Happy WBW! What type of clothing is popular in your WIP and why? Bonus, tell me something cool/fun/interesting about it! (Could be how it's made, how it's worn, if it's fashionable, etc)
Hi Nopal!💜
You've no idea what you've brought upon yourself! I love fashion history, and this is one area I went hard on historical inspirations. So, be prepared, this isn't very creative of me, just very nerdy😉
One thing I took down a notch though were hats and also hairstyles. I've found that it got distracting in descriptions.
*cracks knuckles*
Here we go, for the Days of Dusk trilogy:
Clothing in the Sunblessed Realm is very much an indicator of wealth, but also class, to the point of it wouldn't be appropriate for someone who isn't a noble to wear certain outfits.
The main inspiration is the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the late 18th century, however I've ventured a couple of decades into the 19th century for some sources, when I really struggled to find something suitable for the setting.
Nobility
A nobleman's outfit consists of a kontush - a robe reaching past the knees, buttoned up the front. It has slit sleeves that can be unbuttoned and thrown over one's shoulders, in a gesture that usually means you're riling up for a fight. It's worn over a contrasting underlayer called a zhupan, and it's all tied together with a wide, embroidered belt. The colours are often tied to their family's colours or indicate the region they represent at a parliament or another formal occasion. Example in setting: Ianim will usually attend a ball wearing blue and silver.
A noblewoman will wear an ankle-long gown with whalebone stays and bunched up skirts on formal occasions - see my #dress for more references. For more everyday wear, it's something lighter and a little less voluminous. On a colder day she would wear a jacket in a cut similar to that of a kontush - I've seen examples of it being long or reaching just past the hips (e.g. the lady in the middle of the group picture). In setting: if the lady is the head of the house and represents her family's interests at a parliament, she'd also match her outfit's colours to her family's.
And since winters get very cold in this setting, all sorts of fur-lined coats, capelets, and capes are very much in fashion!
And here are some modern day recreations:
Military
Almost all of my characters are in the demon-slaying army, and they wear a uniform most of the time. The uniforms are primarily inspired by Napoleon's la Grande Armée (since that's a super well documented army), however as opposed to the historical inspirations, they are ashen grey - the colour of mourning in the setting.
The uniform consists of a grey coatee of finely woven wool, grey breeches, white waistcoat and shirt, and tall black boots. A greatcoat may be worn in colder weather. The coatee is single-breasted for enlisted Swords, and double-breasted for officers. The colours of facings and turnbacks (exposed lining) signify a Sword's division.
Officers' ranks are denoted by stars on their buttons, from three-pointed stars for lieutenants, to eight-pointed for generals. And yes, this is a terrible design, and there's a running joke that a newbie has to squint at people's buttons to figure out their rank.
But all the other uniformed forces will have bright red, or blue, or green outfits, stealth be damned!
Here are some pictures for reference, just please ignore the hats.
Commoners
While commoners' clothes are be plainer, made of less fancy fabrics, they still are colourful and decorated with trims and embroidery.
Here are some reference pictures painted by Norblin in the early 19th century (a couple of decades out, but unfortunately commoners weren't a typical subject for paintings at the time).
Even more references this way.
Finally, these are the overall current trends, and in a long-lived culture, there's got to be a bit of a fluidity with respect to how fashion changes. That's not to say that everyone who's more than a few centuries old will cling to the fashion of their youths, but they may choose to put a nostalgic twist onto a modern outfit.

Collecting some of the aesthetic videos I've been watching lately! There were others I checked out to understand wtf is going on without touching tik tok, but a lot of the umbrella videos have iffy quality imo. One better example kind of branched out of fashion into broad visual/lifestyle trends, but missed some big fashion looks. Another youtuber started recapping everything listed on the aesthetic wiki alphabetically but took a breather after reaching 'B' lol. List is under the cut for anyone curious. :P

I've seen a few things on kawaii, fairy kei, witchcore, aliencore, spacecore, vaporwave, glitchcore, etc. but I haven't found videos that felt like they fully hit the nail on the head for me.
What I have found really exciting is how people treat fashion as an art form and explore what can be communicated through it. Similar to how I do designs for video games, I like seeing people experiment with what's possible and integrate new and exciting expressions into fashion. I also think with IRL clothing (besides managing budget lbr T_T) there's a balance of figuring out what is practical and fits into the world/your own life versus self-expression and composition.
Plus, I genuinely have a longstanding love for how varied cuts of clothing, materials, and color palettes can dramatically transform presentation. To me that's part of celebrating multiple forms of beauty and a fun puzzle to work with. So while I've seen critique over certain aesthetics being too narrow or exclusive, I also think it's an opportunity for people to go 'Fuck exclusivity, what's MY spin on this concept?' with amazing results! Thin, pale, and fem isn't the only demographic that gets to participate. If something hasn't been done already that's an opportunity to see what you can do! Anyway. I figure it's pretty normal not to fit into any aesthetic exactly lol, and ofc no one is obligated to respond to this. But I am def curious if anyone passing by might have stuff they gravitate toward. ^^
#Don't be fooled this is a big post#I considered just posting videos one at a time#but honestly I was having trouble even organizing shit in my own head lol#maybe I'll post a few of the vids later separately#Also listen Lolita could be its own wholeass adventure there are so many subcultures#This is more like 'intro to things' than 'BEHOLD FOREMOST AUTHORITY ON THINGS'

I’m not surprised that it's gotten enough attention to have entered the lexicon. It’s a clicky, visual story. But more than anything, the #mobwifeaesthetic presents a particularly delicious idea. Women want fashion to be fun again. We want it to be unique and exciting. We are sick of being told the ultimate luxury is to make everything in our wardrobes and homes — including our kids' stuff — sad and beige. But more importantly, we are desperate to be seen and heard.
For the past couple of years, social media trends have flattened and dimmed us. The biggest fashion craze of the last couple of years was stealth wealth (or "quiet luxury,” brought to prominence by Succession). Stealth wealth was about understated sweaters, white tees, navy blazers, inconspicuous trousers — all the things you could either buy at an Ann Taylor factory sale for less than a cocktail in Manhattan or for thousands of dollars from Loro Piana.
The world has never been an easy place for women, and in many places, it gets harder by the day. Is it any surprise that women want to be loud, bold, and simply seen?

Lesbians I love all of you but for the love of god please stop voting for politicians, volunteering for organizations and just generally carrying water for any movement that endorses trans ideology. It is conversion therapy. These people, whether they are manipulated into it or not, all are saying 1.) masculine women should become men and 2.) the lesbians that remain are obligated to have sex with men or “give them a chance”.
If the past 10 years have taught us anything it’s that the only people who have our backs is us and the rare militant bi or straight woman. Put them before anything and don’t compromise for shit. You will never, ever get that energy back. Especially from any organization that men are in.
The amount of compliance that this movement has found among women’s studies academics, feminist organizations, gay male communities, socialist and communist organizations (even if trans ideology contradicts materialism like directly), anti racist organizations etc etc…is LITERALLY sickening. When it came time, everyone fell in line. And it will hit lesbians hardest for the longest. And nobody gives a fuck.
A huge swath of lesbians my age will have transitioned at least partially. How will that affect us in 10 years? 20 years? Do you think those organizations will apologize once it becomes undeniable taking T is actually dangerous for female bodies? They won’t. They’ll hop onto the next homophobic trend and they will still expect lesbians to do the dirty work.
I think it’s easy for us to live in denial that this has really happened, especially if we are stealth in our waking lives, and believe that the left still has our interests at heart but this is…I think a really naïve perspective. Established adults in the early 2000s and 2010s knew on some level what they were doing. A small group of predatory activists, doctors and academics manipulated an entire generation of teenage lesbians into hurting themselves in ways that are irreparable, and will get worse as they age and *plenty* of older LGBT and feminist adults not only understood the consequences but *allowed* us to be collateral damage so they can keep their wealth and power. They knew stopping this would be a big fight, they knew they would lose ground if they stood with gays and lesbians and they knew this was conversion therapy. They fell in line anyways.
When I say separatism is an imperative for this generation this is ^ these events that I think about most strongly. The more we give our time and energy to organizations that are not women aligned the more power they have to control us and to hurt us. Many academics and cultural leaders made a choice to sell out the young people who identified as trans because they felt their lives work were on the line and they knew that the power structure demanded their submission.
It is clear lesbians as a group are not protected by male society. Not by their families, their friends, not by educational or intellectual leaders, not by businesses, not in the arts or in any aspect of public life. Our only viable shot for creating a world where this cannot happen again is to focus on supporting each other and building our own power and institutions, as independent as possible from men because this hatred will take new forms yes, but as long as males dominate society we will be persecuted, erased and hurt, merely for the crime of being ourselves.
We need to do this quickly and aggressively because things are set to continue to get worse and we are very, very easy scapegoats for social problems. The more actual unconditional power we can grab for ourselves the better we as a community will be able to withstand the challenges now and in the future. The less likely another generation of young lesbians will grow up hating themselves, feeling victimized and with no one to turn to.

Zillow Scraping Mastery: Advanced Techniques Revealed
In the ever-evolving landscape of data acquisition, Zillow stands tall as a treasure trove of valuable real estate information. From property prices to market trends, Zillow's extensive database holds a wealth of insights for investors, analysts, and researchers alike. However, accessing this data at scale requires more than just a basic understanding of web scraping techniques. It demands mastery of advanced methods tailored specifically for Zillow's unique structure and policies. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the intricacies of Zillow scraping, unveiling advanced techniques to empower data enthusiasts in their quest for valuable insights.
Understanding the Zillow Scraper Landscape
Before diving into advanced techniques, it's crucial to grasp the landscape of zillow scraper. As a leading real estate marketplace, Zillow is equipped with robust anti-scraping measures to protect its data and ensure fair usage. These measures include rate limiting, CAPTCHA challenges, and dynamic page rendering, making traditional scraping approaches ineffective. To navigate this landscape successfully, aspiring scrapers must employ sophisticated strategies tailored to bypass these obstacles seamlessly.
Advanced Techniques Unveiled
User-Agent Rotation: One of the most effective ways to evade detection is by rotating User-Agent strings. Zillow's anti-scraping mechanisms often target commonly used User-Agent identifiers associated with popular scraping libraries. By rotating through a diverse pool of User-Agent strings mimicking legitimate browser traffic, scrapers can significantly reduce the risk of detection and maintain uninterrupted data access.
IP Rotation and Proxies: Zillow closely monitors IP addresses to identify and block suspicious scraping activities. To counter this, employing a robust proxy rotation system becomes indispensable. By routing requests through a pool of diverse IP addresses, scrapers can distribute traffic evenly and mitigate the risk of IP bans. Additionally, utilizing residential proxies offers the added advantage of mimicking genuine user behavior, further enhancing scraping stealth.
Session Persistence: Zillow employs session-based authentication to track user interactions and identify potential scrapers. Implementing session persistence techniques, such as maintaining persistent cookies and managing session tokens, allows scrapers to simulate continuous user engagement. By emulating authentic browsing patterns, scrapers can evade detection more effectively and ensure prolonged data access.
JavaScript Rendering: Zillow's dynamic web pages rely heavily on client-side JavaScript to render content dynamically. Traditional scraping approaches often fail to capture dynamically generated data, leading to incomplete or inaccurate results. Leveraging headless browser automation frameworks, such as Selenium or Puppeteer, enables scrapers to execute JavaScript code dynamically and extract fully rendered content accurately. This advanced technique ensures comprehensive data coverage across Zillow's dynamic pages, empowering scrapers with unparalleled insights.
Data Parsing and Extraction: Once data is retrieved from Zillow's servers, efficient parsing and extraction techniques are essential to transform raw HTML content into structured data formats. Utilizing robust parsing libraries, such as BeautifulSoup or Scrapy, facilitates seamless extraction of relevant information from complex web page structures. Advanced XPath or CSS selectors further streamline the extraction process, enabling scrapers to target specific elements with precision and extract valuable insights efficiently.
Ethical Considerations and Compliance
While advanced scraping techniques offer unparalleled access to valuable data, it's essential to uphold ethical standards and comply with Zillow's terms of service. Scrapers must exercise restraint and avoid overloading Zillow's servers with excessive requests, as this may disrupt service for genuine users and violate platform policies. Additionally, respecting robots.txt directives and adhering to rate limits demonstrates integrity and fosters a sustainable scraping ecosystem beneficial to all stakeholders.
Conclusion
In the realm of data acquisition, mastering advanced scraping techniques is paramount for unlocking the full potential of platforms like Zillow. By employing sophisticated strategies tailored to bypass anti-scraping measures seamlessly, data enthusiasts can harness the wealth of insights hidden within Zillow's vast repository of real estate data. However, it's imperative to approach scraping ethically and responsibly, ensuring compliance with platform policies and fostering a mutually beneficial scraping ecosystem. With these advanced techniques at their disposal, aspiring scrapers can embark on a journey of exploration and discovery, unraveling valuable insights to inform strategic decisions and drive innovation in the real estate industry.

Was wondering your thoughts on the costume design on the show. I saw a post recently about the costume design in the show and how it does seem like fashion is really not a big deal. when in most cases when there is a story about a wealthy family. The fashion is usually really important and they’re always shown with the most high end on trend clothing. I think the costume design is great but understated. was wondering if you think that’s intentional and what your thoughts are? (Succession)
Oh, man, this is such a huge question because ultimately I do think it varies both character-to-character, and episode-to-episode. That's not unusual for shows of this callibre with such a big ensemble to manage and such a limited setting (i.e. corporate chic is 9 times out of 10 what characters are wearing), and I do think they overall do a really great job. Their use of colour in showing alliances and fracturing relationships is especially good, and I like the way they play around with really simple things like hats, watches, amount of buttons done up, shoes, and fits to show differing mental states and groundings.
I also really appreciate that the show's overall costume/art department vision is about divorcing glamour from wealth, but I think there was a lack of clarity sometimes in terms of the visual language of the show in understanding whether the costume and depictions of set were about being accustomed to a certain quality vs an inherent lack of taste.
I think Shiv's probably the worst for this, which I know a lot of people read as Shiv not knowing who she is and the costumes being a reflection of that, and I do think there's room to say Shiv has difficulties with elements of fashion being raised by men to appreciate maleness and masculinity, of which fashion is pointedly not, but I don't know. I do think the show at various points has struggled to dress her in a way that made sense for her wealth and status (like, this is hair and make up, not costume, but I actively disagree with the premise that a character like Shiv would just tie her hair back for Connor's wedding. She could half-arse it, for sure, but she still has people seconds away from doing that for her).
That said, I do think they dress her great a lot of the time, and I think the show is actively interested in stealth wealth fashion, and not detracting from the inherent narcissism in characters like Kendall and Roman to dress in a way that's expensive yet not ostentatious. They know they're not men of the people, and would never slum it, yet at the same time they want to just look like a better version of a business bro. An elevated everyman, instead of a billionaire, and I think that works. I think the costume team has put a lot of thought into that, but yes. Not sure I think their vision always worked with Shiv.
#i also have my sister who works in costume in my ear#who basically froths at the mouth when people wear satin in shows#and shiv wearing so much in s1 always makes me think of how pissed she'd be haha#hbo succession#welcome to my ama

did u guys notice that since the pandemic made the ever increasing wealth inequality extremely evident and people are becoming more and more angry and disillusioned with the rich/celebrities there have been more and more trends like "blokecore" (where rich people are "borrowing" and bastardizing staples of working class culture and making it into an aesthetic) and at the same there's also new trends of avoiding blatant displays of wealth and preferring the idea of more sublte "stealth wealth" (Gwyneth Paltrow's trial had everyone talking about stealth-wealth dressing, where "Buy high, look low-key" is the philosophy) or "recessioncore" on the red carpets (avoiding wearing jewelry or visible brand names etc and anything that is visibly expensive)... like I'm no expert but I feel like it's all connected lmao
#idk if it makes sense#but yeah i was thinking about it today#bc i read some call it 'poorface' lmao

Could you explain the history behind old money aesthetic?
The old money aesthetic has a rich history that is deeply intertwined with wealth, social status, and cultural influences. It is associated with a classic, refined style that exudes an air of timeless elegance and sophistication. Here is a brief overview of the history behind the old money aesthetic:
The old money aesthetic can be described as a style that reflects the appearance of inherited wealth rather than acquired wealth. It is often associated with the upper class and the long-established wealthy elite. In the United States, old money is often linked to WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) culture, while in Europe, it is associated with titles of nobility.
The visuals of the old money aesthetic indicate wealth and history. The key is understated elegance, with clothes that may appear plain or boring but are of high quality. The color palette is more muted, and black and purple are often used. Terms like "stealth wealth" and "quiet luxury" have been used to describe the old money aesthetic, emphasizing a sophisticated and classy style.
The old money aesthetic draws inspiration from various sources. It is influenced by classic designers such as Ralph Lauren, Hermes, and Chanel, who have created timeless pieces that epitomize sophistication and luxury. Classic wardrobe staples like tailored suits, cashmere sweaters, pearls, and leather loafers are often associated with this aesthetic.
The old money aesthetic is not limited to fashion alone. It extends to interior design, cultural appreciation, and a refined way of life. Old money aesthetic homes are known for their tasteful interiors, featuring antiques, rich fabrics, and a timeless color palette. Embracing cultural experiences, such as literature, art, and fine dining, is also an important aspect of the old money aesthetic.
In recent years, the old money aesthetic has gained popularity, particularly among younger generations. Platforms like TikTok have played a significant role in its rise, with users finding creative ways to incorporate old money elements into their outfits. The aesthetic has been popularized by celebrities like Sofia Richie, who embody the classic and sophisticated style associated with old money.
It's important to note that the old money aesthetic is not without its criticisms. Some argue that it perpetuates classism and exclusivity, while others appreciate it as a celebration of timeless elegance and refinement. Fashion trends and aesthetics are subjective and can evolve over time, influenced by cultural sentiments, pop culture, and political movements. In conclusion, the old money aesthetic is rooted in a history of inherited wealth and refined tastes. It represents a style that values quality, heritage, and subtlety over flashy displays of wealth. By embracing this aesthetic, individuals seek to embody a timeless elegance and sophistication that transcends fleeting trends.
