9 Exciting April 2024 Book Releases to Read Now

I cannot even explain how many absolutely incredible looking books are coming out this month! I guess a good place to start would be that I checked out 4 influencer ALCs from Libro.fm when my previous maximum was 2. There were simply too many good ones to pass up on! Even outside of those, the books coming out this month look delightful from start to finish and I’m sure many of the WTTN Best Of…

I’m not surprised that it's gotten enough attention to have entered the lexicon. It’s a clicky, visual story. But more than anything, the #mobwifeaesthetic presents a particularly delicious idea. Women want fashion to be fun again. We want it to be unique and exciting. We are sick of being told the ultimate luxury is to make everything in our wardrobes and homes — including our kids' stuff — sad and beige. But more importantly, we are desperate to be seen and heard.

For the past couple of years, social media trends have flattened and dimmed us. The biggest fashion craze of the last couple of years was stealth wealth (or "quiet luxury,” brought to prominence by Succession). Stealth wealth was about understated sweaters, white tees, navy blazers, inconspicuous trousers — all the things you could either buy at an Ann Taylor factory sale for less than a cocktail in Manhattan or for thousands of dollars from Loro Piana.

The world has never been an easy place for women, and in many places, it gets harder by the day. Is it any surprise that women want to be loud, bold, and simply seen?

Books Recs of 2024

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. Mystery/fantasy centered around Din, a young assistant investigator assigned to help an eccentric and infamous detective, Ana Dolabra, solve a series of murders. Din is an engraver, his brain altered so he has a photographic memory. However, no one is quite sure how he got his current position, since he failed every single one of his final exams except the combat portion. Ana is an exceedingly odd woman who refuses to go to any crime scene in person and often performs mad science experiments in her spare time. As Din struggles to keep up with the case, which revolves around a bioweapon being unleashed on a series of the empire's best engineers, he also worries what will happen when Ana finally uncovers his secrets.

Highfire by Eoin Colfer. Urban fantasy (very comedic fantasy) about a dragon called Vern (short for Wyvern), who teams up with a juvenile delinquent named Squib (real name Everett Moreau) to take down a corrupt sheriff who is plaguing the Lousiana bayou. Vern is a very small (seven feet long) dragon who is the last of his kind (as far as he knows). When he is spotted by a local troubled teen, his first instinct is to hunt Squib down and kill him, but he quickly realizes the two of them have a common enemy- the murderous sheriff who is running drugs through their territory.

The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi. Magical realism about a romantic-minded art historian who is swept off his feet by a mysterious and charming heiress. After a whirlwind courtship, the happy couple return to her childhood home; a Gothic manor on a lonely island. The more time our narrator spends around his wife's past, the more questions are raised- increasingly sinister ones about who she is and what exactly she is capable of. Once upon a time, she was best friends with an equally odd and dreamy little girl named Indigo. But no one has seen Indigo for many years now- and the Flower Bride may be behind her disappearance.

Chlorine by Jade Song. Horror/magical realism. Since childhood, Ren's entire identity has been wrapped up in swimming. If she can be strong enough, fast enough, special enough, success is sure to come her way. As the end of high school approaches, Ren's passion for swimming becomes less about her future, and more about past legends of mermaids and sirens dragging sailors into the deep. Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch by Rivka Galchen. Historical fiction. Based on the real life trial of Katharina Kepler, mother of the famed Johannes Kepler, Imperial Mathematician to the Holy Roman Empire. Katharina is a busybody, a domineering and devilishly clever woman with a particular talent for healing. She is also a fiercely loyal mother to her adult children, but when an old neighborhood grudge flares into accusations of poison and witchcraft, Katharina is determined not to meekly confess and beg pardon. The more she lashes out at her neighbors and the authorities, the more charges begin to pile up against her- despite her son's desperate attempts to save her from torture and execution.

Bury Me Deep by Megan Abbott. Crime thriller/noir. Based on a real life murder case in 1931 Phoenix Arizona. Naive and sheltered Marion Seeley is deposited in Phoenix by her disgraced doctor husband, who is forced to take a job with a mining company in South America after his medical license is revoked. Marion befriends the vivacious Louise and Ginny, two fellow nurses, who introduce her to the underground party scene in Phoenix. Politicians and businessmen flock to the secret parties held by them, and it's a quick way to make money on the side. I live in Philly (where I was born) so I see plenty of Carmela Sopranos at the Wawa (our local convenience store) in the morning, but they aren’t doing this for TikTok. Storia dell’artista

Gabriele Borsato è un artista della provincia di Treviso. Il suo esordio ufficiale in campo discografico avviene nel 2007, con “Dimmelo Tu”, brano disponibile su tutti i digital store, artisticamente prodotto da Alchemystudio e rieditato dalla Sorridi Music di Jo Conti nell’agosto 2020 e selezionato per le prime fasi online del Festival di Sanremo Giovani 2011 (esibito il 17/02/11 in Piazza Colombo, a Sanremo). Successivamente, nel gennaio 2021, esce il singolo “Segnal”, brano di respiro internazionale, (distribuito in esclusiva mondiale dalla Rehegoo, una etichetta londinese) in cui il Maestro Diego Basso dirige l'Orchestra Ritmico Sinfonica Italiana ed artisticamente prodotto dal Maestro Francesco Sartori, in occasione della realizzazione del cd “Corde Libere 2013”.

L’inesauribile energia del musicista e la sua voglia di mettersi in gioco, lo portano a partecipare a Casa Sanremo, con il brano “Per Te” (SPCsound).

Tra le varie esperienze importanti per la sua crescita artistica e personale, spicca l'approdo nella prestigiosa finale della 33esima edizione del Sanremo Rock.

Selezionato tra oltre 10 mila partecipanti, infatti, Gabriele sale sul palcoscenico con “Crescendo”, brano che racconta il suo vissuto, in una prospettiva futura, nato quando diviene padre per la seconda volta e si trova ad affrontare nuove sfide.

“L’amaro che mi resta” canzone che racconta un certo tipo di solitudine.

Prima uscita del 2022, a giugno, è il brano di passaggio tra la musica fatta finora e quella a cui sta lavorando per le prossime pubblicazioni.

“Sei bella così”, l’estate, il mare, da portare tutto dentro.

Uscito nell’estate del 2022, è un brano totalmente dance, in cui le situazioni che si intrecciano durante l’estate, tornano sempre nei propri ricordi.

“Online”, questo nuovo modo di comunicare ed interagire con le altre persone, in questi anni vigliacchi di pandemia e ipocrisia, descrive la voglia di poter comunicare con l’interlocutore dall’altra parte, che seppure sia collegato, online appunto, non invia alcun segnale. È la voglia di comunicare ad ogni costo.

On a typical day, Victoria Yost wakes up at 8:30 a.m. and then makes her way downstairs to enjoy a breakfast of homemade yogurt with her 2-year-old son. Following a homeschool lesson, errands, and a PB&J lunch, the homemaker and content creator collects a few eggs from the chicken coop in her backyard and uses them to bake homemade Oreos. Next on her to-do list is a spotless house and a spaghetti-and-meatball dinner for her family. With supper simmering, Yost tends to a load of laundry. Yost, who posts "day in the life" videos like this one for her 215,000 followers on TikTok to enjoy under the moniker @thymeandtenderness, identifies as a "tradwife." There are nearly 17,000 videos with the #tradwife hashtag on the platform - and thousands more that don't use the hashtag but feature the same aesthetic: perfectly curated mommy blogger meets 1950s nostalgia. In one video with 1.5 million likes, a pregnant woman wearing a cocktail dress bakes cinnamon rolls from scratch for her husband, who is on his way home from a business trip. In another, watched by 181 million people, an attractive young mom makes meatballs and mozzarella - again, from scratch - while her seven children run around in the background. Like most things on the internet, these videos are polarizing. And with viewers loving or loathing them with equal fervor, they've sparked a debate that goes beyond cinnamon rolls and house dresses - and this tension is indicative of a broader cultural clash, between tradition and feminism. Williams, like many tradwives, emphasizes in her content that this lifestyle is a choice - no one has forced tradwives into this position. That being said, the majority of these women are Mormon and attribute their beliefs to their Christian faith. This emphasis on submission is one of the key differentiators between the tradwife lifestyle and being a stay-at-home mom (or SAHM, in internet-speak).
