It's pretty striking just how powerful abstraction and programming can be. In my fourth year, I struggled with a final project where I spent days deriving the transfer functions for a 3 state variable, 5 force variable system. No individual part of the derivation was difficult, but it was long and tedious, and it's very easy to make some trivial error in 8 pages of hand written math that fucks everything up.
Now that I'm TAing the same class, and helping students with the same project, I can bring to bear my better understanding of matlab, and greater experience working with linear systems of differential equations, and I realized the code to solve this problem programatically looks something like this:
syms Ca Cb Tr Ca0 Cb0 Tr0 Tj Q state = [Ca Cb Tr Ca0 Cb0 Tr0 Tj Q]; steadyState = [2.5 1.5 325 4 0 300 350 50]; dState = [ Q*(Ca0 - Ca) - 2*exp(1/Tr)*Ca; Q*(Cb0 - Cb) + 2*exp(1/Tr)*Ca - 3*exp(1/Tr)*Cb; Q*(Tr0 - Tr) - 12*exp(1/Tr)*Ca - 15*exp(1/Tr)*Ca + Tj - Tr; ]; JdState = double(subs(jacobian(dState, state), state, steadyState)); A = JdState(:,1:3); B = JdState(:,4:end); s = tf('s'); G = (eye(3)*s - A)\B
That's it, a dozen lines of code. With a few tweaks, I could generalize this by parameterizing values that are currently just magic constants. With a few more tweaks I could generalize this to solve almost any system, all the user would need to do is provide the dState matrix and identify which variables are force variables and which variables are state variables.
It took me longer to write out this post than it did for me to solve that system, while it took me 3 days and an entire notebook of derivations to do it 7 years ago.

Enhancing Radical-Mediated Photopylomerization Efficacy and Crosslink Depth: Kinetic Modeling of a Two-Monomer System

Enhancing Radical-Mediated Photopylomerization Efficacy and Crosslink Depth: Kinetic Modeling of a Two-Monomer System- Crimson Publishers
The kinetics and rate equations are derived to analyze the enhanced cross-linking via a two-monomer system, in which the photoinitiator (PI) triplet excited state interacts with monomers, [A] and [B], to form reactive intermediates radicals, which could interact with oxygen, [A],[B], and bimolecular termination. Quasi-steady-state conditions are employed to solve for radicals which are used to find the temporal prpfiles of the monomer efficacy and cosslink depth, as a function of light intensity, exposure time, and concentrations of PI, [A] and [B]. Higher light intensity and radical coupling rate constant lead to faster depletion of PI and oxygen concentration; and faster transient rising efficacy, but a lower steadystate efficacy. Conversion efficacy is an increasing function of the ratio [B]/[A]. In contrast, efficacy is a decreasing function of the reaction rate ratio of oxygen and triplet state, resulted by the stronger oxygen inhibition. Efficacy may be improved by additive enhancer-monomer or extended lifetime of photosensitizer triplet-state or oxygen singlet, in consistent with the measured clinical data. Oxygen inhibition effect may be reduced by the presence of D2O, which extends the lifetime of singlet oxygen. Our analytic formulas provide useful guidance for the scaling laws for further clinical studies.

Excited to have added a new @breakoutrunning client, somebody I’ve worked with before on the high school coaching side. The plan is to make him a @lsutrackfield Tiger by end of summer! . . . Meanwhile 8.7 miles for me today, 4 at #steadystate effort. My long version of the #fairfaxcity loop is challenging and as I rediscovered today, there is about a 3-mile stretch where I am just going up and up and up...definitely a challenge. At least the rain we had all day tapered off after about a mile. My @altrarunning Escalantes still got soaked though. Pretty sure they will live to see another run. . . . #runblr #fitblr #mastersrunner #basebuilding #endurancetraining #springrunning #runcoaching #motivation #keepshowingup #runningduringcovid19 #racingagainsoon (at Fairfax, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_oQO_eHIxl/?igshid=gz1onc3k5bc5

HOW TO STOP BLOATING - I'm certainly not the greatest wizard to ever live but I do like to think I've learned, at least, a thing or two in my time as a coach. One of those things is how to reduce (or stop) bloating Worth noting, there R many possible reasons for y u may b getting bloated. & it's impossible for me to tell u wht exactly, is causing it. & for tht reason, if u find urself chronically bloated, u 100% should speak to ur doctor (& I encourage u to ask them abt IBS & to check for any food intolerances because those r common culprits). First thing I'd say is quit eating raw veggies& start cooking them. Along those lines, it's smart to reduce (or eliminate) cruciferous veggies because, if u're prone to bloating, they can wreak havoc on ur stomach. If u don't know wht "cruciferous vegetables" r, u can type those 2 words right into the Google machine & it will tell u, literally, everything u could ever want to know Sipping hot water and/or tea is another of my favorite charms tht works *really* well. I'm not 100% sure y but, if I had to guess, it makes it easier for the food to be broken down and digested without getting "stuck" and sitting there As for the rest, eating smaller/more frequent meals can help with digestion. Probiotics & digestive enzymes get solid reviews but don't work for everyone/everything. Sugar alcohols affect everyone differently but, for what it's worth, I've seen them cause a metric eff ton of bloating in *a lot* of people (myself included) so just be aware. And when in doubt, going on a light walk or bike or doing any low intensity cardio can work wonders in reducing the bloat. hope this helps and, as always, any questions leave em below💪 - #bloatedbelly #bloated #bloating #pms #tea #water #hottea #hotwater #probiotics #digestion #enzymes #walk #walking #cardio #liss #steadystate #bodybuilding #bodybuildingcom #healthy #bloatingremedy #metabolichealth #perimenopausehealth #highcholesterol #bloidsugarbalance #antiinflammatorydiet #gutbrainconnection #digestionsupport #nutritioncounselling #inflammationrelief #optimalnutrition https://www.instagram.com/p/CDbE5z4pqYE/?igshid=b6d56djly74l

I love exploring Wales. Loughor Estuary is literally 10mins walk from my house. It’s beautiful. Wonderful walk with Loki and my parents. We all travel to see how beautiful the world is, sometimes we forget to simply look up and see what is right in front of us. The beauty and joy we have on our own doorstep. Stop. Take a breath. Take it all in. Enjoy it. Be present. #wales #walks #scenery #estuary #loughor #dogwalks #landscape #liss #steadystate #longwalks #balance #bepresent #dailygrind #sunset #walesunlimited #discoverwales (at Loughor Estuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/BteZuwzFjUJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1kps7gk3sl4hv

Steady State Cardio VS HIIT
Steady state cardio and long distance running causes you to lose muscle mass, store fat, a rise in your cortisol levels (stress hormone) and is associated with a dip in testosterone levels. Let's take a look at an Olympic long distance runner and notice the lack of muscle mass. This is because muscle is heavy and metabolically expensive (requires energy/calories). Whereas fat can store a lot calories and is the predominant source of fuel for marathon runners when stored carbohydrates run out. Choosing steady state cardio is choosing sacrifice muscle for fat. Interestingly enough let's examine the key factors in healthspan: 1) muscle mass 2) strength 3) BMR 4) body fat percentage 5) aerobic capacity. You are still able to train your cardiorespiratory fitness without having to sacrifice your muscle which is the number one factor in healthspan. You can do this by doing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which has shown to have equivalent improvements in vo2max, anaerobic threshold, aerobic power, and other long-distance biomarkers as steady state and long distance running. Lastly it is far less time consuming to perform HIIT than it is steady state cardio with the same results. It seems like a no brainer to me if you're looking to improve your health.
