I think it’s really sweet when people point out that in getting married/engaged to Callum that Rayla would then become Princess Consort/ Crown Princess but it is also extremely funny because I wholeheartedly believe Rayla wouldn’t realize that until its too late
She’ll be getting introduced to people visiting King Ezran’s court then she’d hear the words “This is the Crown Princess, Rayla.” and the poor girl would stand there like

rook being such a nobody and surrounded by more influential companions right after the obviously well known inquisitor could be really cool actually. that conversation w solas 'what will they call you after this is done' <- NO FUCKING CLUE LOL!! the idea that this millennia long, world-ending story of gods and a herald being controlled for a moment by a nobody is incredible. they start as an irritant and end having saved the world. nobody thanks them. they go back home. maybe they're literally wiped off the face of the world when they're trapped in the fade with the dread wolf! and most of all, their name is not remembered. literally, because they become a 'rook' to the inquisitor's king.
like i’m actually really liking the idea that the inquisitor and rook get conflated into the same person by the public and by history, and what little agency they had is taken away. you were never in control of this story. your narrative will be written by other people, just like every figurehead that came before you. you are not the chosen one. the choice to have faded out and see the irrelevancy as a boon, or struggle to make your name known (not rook, not the nickname, not the title) would have been so. interesting.
veilguard is a heroic story (and the game doesn’t even let you be rude most of the time) that has to end heroically (the evanuris are defeated in some way, the last archdemon dies, and most rooks climb down from minrathous to literal cheers and applause) but the hero themself is forgettable. narratively that could have been so funnnn. but it wasn’t on purpose so it just feels hollow.

ch 5 is coming in twsten ch5 is coming in twsten ch5 is coming in twsten (we gon die it's been a YEAR since I saw some clips and I have not emotionally recovered from the incredible deliveries by Silver's seiyuu because holy fuck) EGOOOOO ARE YOU READY TO SEE EVERYONE DESCENDING INTO MADNESS AGAIN (and a pool of tears??? MINE SPECIFICALLY)
YESSSSSS I AM SO EXCITED FOR EVERYONE ON ENG, chapter 5 is some of the most PEAK Diafamily content imo. 🤌 it's definitely my favorite part of episode 7 so far! (though 6 is pretty close...)
some (mostly) non-spoilery advice: on the hex maps, check out the non-required story cells, especially in the later parts! some are basically just throwaways, but there's some real good scenes hidden in there too that are potentially missable. 🥄 (it shows which cells you've cleared on previous attempts, so if you're low on resources and/or super impatient like me, do just the required ones to get through it, then when you're ready go back and restart as necessary to get to the others. enjoy! >:)

thinking about this article i read that mentioned illegitimate children in ancient greece (athens in particular) and also this chapter from imagining illegitimacy in classical greek literature and how teucer's entire relationship to telamon (and by extension, ajax and eurysaces) is reliant on maintaining telamon's favor, and how when he loses that - after fighting for ten years to sack his mother's city, killing his own maternal family in the process - he is basically left without any kin at all. and i think it hits harder that teucer went to war against the side of his family that (in other circumstances) he would have been included in, since illegitimate children were typically raised by their mother's relatives. he gambled everything and he lost it all in return

Baela rode Moondancer once in the dance, Rhaena never had a dragon till after the dance was over, and Rhaenyra never rode Syrax except when she arrived at Kings Landing, yet Baela has had multiple Moondancer scenes (as she should), Rhaena has been given Nettles' plot AND dragon, and Rhaenyra has had plenty of shots with Syrax and is now (allegedly) going to be teaching dragon riding 101 to the dragonseeds and will likely take part in at least one dragon battle.
But Helaena and her beloved Dreamfyre? nah. Her bond to a dragon just isn't important enough 😒

super fun how you can see the way the writers switched-up on vi's character through literally like. two lines. one from s1 and one from s2
line from s1 [paraphrased]: "we don't mix. oil and water" from the break-up scene
line from s2: "i am the dirt under your nails, cupcake"
oil i ascribe specifically to vi and i think that story does too, as the only time it's previously mentioned is by vander's when emphasizing the importance of vi's role to the kids that follow her around.
"you ask for a fire, they show up with oil" (also paraphrased). you could characterize oil as something inherently impure when compared to water and that it's used to degrade her but oil in the earlier way it was mentioned contextualizes it as a spark that lights a fire and is ultimately useful in the undercity. water as ascribed to caitlyn when looking at oil as a spark can be seen as pointing to an inherent unavoidable nature to extinguish vi's fire but whatever. that is not the point of this.
when vi compares them to oil and water it emphasizes the separation of the two and that they'll never mix, but something to note is that oil sits atop water after settling when someone attempts to mix them together. when vi takes agency to separate herself from caitlyn she compares herself to oil, this metaphor does not situate vi as someone lower than caitlyn despite the inherent purity associated with water versus perceptions of oil as dirty
the line from s2, though, spits on this by directly characterizing vi as dirt, to start off with. then in her specifically being under caitlyn's nails, she places herself as physically lower than caitlyn. like, she describes herself as this dirty inconvenience that can not be dug out. very stark contrast from the way she displays her agency in the break-up scene from s1.
i think the lack of care the writers put into her character in season 2 can be seen in much larger ways but its also shown through something as small as the non-living things vi compares herself to

Quote
This is what the world honors: wealth, eminence, long life, a good name. This is what the world finds happiness in: a life of ease, rich food, fine clothes, beautiful sights, sweet sounds. ... People who can’t get these things fret a great deal and are afraid — this is a stupid way to treat the body. People who are rich wear themselves out rushing around on business, piling up more wealth than they could ever use — this is a superficial way to treat the body. People who are eminent spend night and day scheming and wondering whether they are doing right — this is a shoddy way to treat the body. Man lives his life in company with worry, and if he lives a long while till he’s dull and doddering, then he has spent that much time worrying instead of dying, a bitter lot indeed! This is a callous way to treat the body.
