Happy 2023 everybody! It's a new year meaning I've got new goals to meet. Goals like finally publishing something, setting up commissions so people can pay me to do what I love, cross-posting between my account here and on deviantART, summoning more kaijus just so they can play elaborate games of poker, y'know, all that good stuff. It also means the return of my 'list of things that have reached a milestone anniversary' list. However, it seems like I've been doing this for so long that these lists have in fact reached their own milestone. “Star Trek: Prodigy” s2e3 (2024)

This season, for the time being anyway, is story-arc-driven. I wonder will we revert to self-contained adventures at some point? (I hope we do.)

It's also a season that, at this point, has split the core group of characters into three different locations. Gwyn is fighting her own battles on her home planet, while Dal and some of the others are in the future with Chakotay. There's a brief c-story showing Rok-Tahk and Murf on Voyager with Janeway.

The storyline in the future is the best part. It has some killer gags (thanks to Jankom Pog), and it ends up going in a very unexpected direction. The episode ends with the characters in dire straits and the viewer unsure as to what can happen next.

VOY: Caretaker (Part 2)

The Star Trek universe is a long road, so to keep things moving along home, I’ve decided to no longer split up 2-part episodes and films. This is the first of three posts that will wrap up Caretaker, Emissary, and ST: The Motion Picture. 

Part two of Voyager’s pilot episode brings new excitement, new troubles, and new characters.

Are all Talaxians this… eccentric?

When we first meet Neelix, he’s scraping out a living as a junk trader, clad in a fur coat that appears to be made up of several different alien mammals, over a confusingly-patchwork shirt (or harness? Or space lederhosen??) with metallic gold accents. It’s an appropriately mottled look for his line of work, although it definitely looks like it smells weird.

Is that me or you, Mr. Vulcan?

However, we don’t get to spend much time with this outfit, as Janeway invites the Talaxian aboard, and Neelix is quick to take advantage of Voyager’s facilities – including the replicator. After asking Tuvok if it will make him a Starfleet uniform (“it most certainly will not”), we beam down to the Ocampan planet below to see that Neelix has chosen a suit made of old bus station upholstery. 

At first, I thought this outfit was both too beige and too chaotic, but the more I look, the more I like it. It actually kind of works with his Talaxian mohawk and spots, and I love that the fabric is just as garish and patchwork-looking as his “junk collector” outfit.. Also, the overwhelming impression of beige may just be due to this planet’s extremely yellow lens filter atmosphere.

The colour palette is “waiting room neutral”.

The structure of the outfit is interesting, too. Chunky piping across the midsection creates some nice, futuristic asymmetry, and I love that it continues down the one sleeve in rings. Neelix goes on to knock it out of the park with a matching teal shirt (you can just see the collar peeking out above) and shoes.

This is a man who knows how to coordinate.

Next, it’s time for another new species in the Delta Quadrant: the Kazon! As we get a wide shot of the group of Kazon Ogla, we can immediately see a lot of cream and ochre tones, cut off sleeves, and a single hairstyle that everybody has to share.

And no girls allowed.

It’s actually an incredible number of unique-but-coordinated costumes. You immediately get the impression that these guys are a rowdy bunch who aren’t afraid to get their asymmetrical skirts dirty proving who has the most testosterone. As well, everybody looks great in warm earth tones.

I guess it’s not hard to shop when every single member of your species is an autumn.

Somebody needs to tell them all the belts and gloves are a bit much though.

We just like to feel secure, okay?

Kes also makes her debut in this scene, but she’s basically wearing a dirty potato sack, so we’ll skip ahead. Like her lover Neelix, she’s quick to accept the Voyager crew’s hospitality, and replicates a new set of duds the moment she’s on board. Interestingly, she opts for a very Kazon colour palette.

Now who’s asymmetrical??

It’s a killer look – layered, colourful, a little bit alien, but also cute. The one-shoulder bodycon tunic is sexy, but the neckline and legs are very modestly covered. Kes is basically Twiggy as a telepathic space elf. As a child watching Star Trek in the 90s, I remember noticing Jennifer Lien’s costumes as Kes more than anything else in the show, and I still aspire to this aesthetic.

I only noticed how gay I was later.

There’s also a lot of variation in textures here, between the crinkled summer cotton and contrasting velveteen, which we’ll soon see is the style of the Ocampa. What? Oh right! Our people are still missing! Back down to the planet we go. 

The underground Ocampa lean toward earth tones – although, would they call them that? – befitting their simple, horticultural lifestyle. Like Kes, their outfits are layered and multi-textured.

The Caretaker provides everything we need. Linen, tweed, corduroy…

Unless you’re a bad guy, in which case you wear grey, unflattering robes and a scarf (poorly).

The Ocampan equivalent of sweats and a gym tee.

We also get a really good look at Chakotay’s Maquis outfit in this scene, which will sadly soon be replaced by a Starfleet uniform for good. It’s a shame, as it looks like someone spent a lot of time working on that leather vest, with its hand-stitched details and tailored fit.

Do you think he brought the holster from home?

Speaking of Maquis drip, B’Elanna has some INSANE boots that we only get to see for a split second as she swings her legs off a bio-bed in sick bay. The whole outfit is absolutely deadly, but I would do anything to see these boots show up in more episodes.

Surely we can make a uniform exception?

With all the loose ends neatly wrapped up, it’s time for the Voyager crew (and new additions) to start the long trek home. But before we can warp away, Neelix and Kes run to tell Janeway something very important – that they’ve replicated more new clothes.

The bridge is basically a common area, right?

Kes sports an olive green tunic with slashed shoulders that allow the poofy sleeves of a shirt underneath to poke through, over jade green leggings and matching heels. It’s another cute look, and even more elfin than before, but I think the red-and-orange outfit was more flattering. Neelix has another matching pants and jacket set made out of the ugliest fabric possible, though with an interesting front closure swooping off to one side. Beneath the jacket is a very handsome red shirt, with a sort of kimono-like layered appearance.

Slow your pace a bit, guys, we’ve got 70,000 lightyears to go.

Comics Reading Update: July 24, 2024

I read through Nick Fury vs. SHIELD recently after seeing it was covered on the Iron Age podcast. I got a hard copy cheap from mycomicshop.com, so I got to read it off of real paper.

I really enjoyed it overall and especially dug the art and the colors. I did realize that it was kind of meandering into bizarre territory and then ended kind of abruptly, but I liked it as a surreal spy comic.

Now I'm kind of in an in-between space as far as what I'm reading. I've messed around with some of the archive of Star Trek books I have loaded to my tablet. There's a lot in there. Read a Voyager comic storyline where they run into the Doomsday Machine [Star Trek: Voyager - "The Planet Killer"].

It didn't really do it for me, overall. I felt like the art put so much into getting perfect character likenesses that it didn't have any dynamic sense of movement. There was a lot of talking heads just sort of floating in front of a background doing technobabble.

Started reading some storyline from IDW that takes place on the Enterprise after TOS but seemingly before TAS [Star Trek: Year Four (mini series)]. It's okay. I'm not super feeling it, and I have some suspicion that the pages are out of order.

[Note: after originally writing this, I did start to enjoy this story a bit more. Though it'll still never be my favorite. It's definitely a sort of exercise in tying together a bunch of loose ends from one-off TOS episodes.]

I let me DC and Marvel digital app subscriptions lapse just to encourage myself to get more into Hoopla and the various physical books I have around that I haven't read yet. Though it is tough not to just dip into the comforting and reliable habit of just opening something on MU before bed and reading until I can't stay awake. It'll give me a chance to move forward more through those IDW hardback collections of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Star Trek: Voyager - Planet Killer #2 by Robert Teranishi and Jean-Claude St. Aubin

So, I finished watching Star Trek: Voyager. (spoilers throughout)

I started watching the show a couple of years ago, and I remember being impressed at how solid its pilot was. Star Trek shows (in my experience) have a history of starting out a bit rough before figuring themselves out, and it felt like Voyager had a pretty solid identity figured out right from the get-go.

But while I have loved watching the show as a whole, it felt like it went through multiple identity crises along the way.

It’s frustrating because the show contains the best depiction of the weight of being in the captain’s chair out of any Star Trek story I have ever seen. Janeway herself is just a great character in general, but getting moments like the finale of “Tuvix” or literally any scene in “Year of Hell” go much further in depicting the effect of leadership on our lead character than one would expect in a Trek show.

Over the course of my viewing of Voyager, I noticed that I tended to respond more to darker episodes than others. “Meld”, in which Tuvok mind-melds with a serial killer Betazoid played by the great Brad Dourif, is one example. “Mortal Coil”, in which Neelix experiences a crisis of faith after a death experience, is another favorite. And while I am indeed a sucker for a quality dark Trek story, the main reason that I believe I favored these kinds of episodes was because they felt like they had an impact on the characters.

Most of the blockbuster two-parters over the course of the show didn’t really stick with me, despite some very fun premises. And it’s because, with the exception of “Scorpion”, most of these two-parters tended to resolve in a way that completely undid any semblance of consequence on future episodes.

The most egregious example of this is the ending of “Year of Hell”, a two-parter that began development as a premise for the entirety of Season 4, but was rejected by producer Rick Berman and downgraded to two-parter instead. While I had pacing issues with the episodes due to sensing the abbreviated nature of a lot of the subplots, I overall really liked the story and seeing the crew of Voyager having to endure so much. Not because I wanted to see them suffer, but because I wanted to see stories that conveyed their journey home would have an impact on them. So when “Year of Hell” ends with a timeline reset that completely eradicates all of the events of the two-parter, I felt cheated. Because it is a cheat.

When Voyager did a similar time travel reset for their 100th episode, “Timeless”, in which a future Chakotay and Harry pull some shenanigans to prevent Voyager from crashing into an ice planet, that story successfully had its cake and ate it by having our present-day crew be aware of the future Harry and Chakotay’s actions. The episode ends with a shocked present-day Harry watching a video message from his now-dead future self.

When I finally got around to the series finale, “Endgame”, all I knew to expect was another time travel story. I have no issues with time travel in Star Trek. It’s possibly overused, but I never get tired of it because more often than not, Trek knows how to find the fun in whichever story they use that device in. I enjoyed the first half of “Endgame” and its depiction of our crew’s future lives back on Earth. I liked seeing Admiral Janeway go rogue in order to time travel back to the Voyager crew that we’ve been following throughout most of the show. And as purposely-but-still-strangely jarring as it was to see Admiral Janeway try to prioritize Captain Janeway and the crew over defeating the Borg, I really liked their scenes together as well as Admiral Janeway’s confrontation, defeat, and death with the Borg Queen. (who is suddenly played by Alice Krige again in the finale after being played by Susanna Thompson in previous Voyager episodes. I was happy to see her but a bit confused after the show seemed to indicate that Thompson was meant to be Borg Queen 2.0, only to have our original Queen from First Contact return)

Then the last few minutes happen. The Borg are quickly dispatched, Voyager makes it back to the Alpha Quadrant, and the show ends with them blowing up a Borg Sphere and saying “hello” to the Starfleet ships waiting for them. There is barely any time devoted to the impact of arriving home on the crew because it happens so suddenly. And as much as Mulgrew does to sell “Set a course for home” as the final line... it falls flat.

I suspect that the reasoning for the abrupt ending is that the writers thought depicting the future older versions of the crew on Earth would serve as closure for our cast of characters. But it doesn’t work because the whole premise of the finale centers on Admiral Janeway undoing that future so she can save the lives of Seven of Nine and Chakotay, who are dead in this depicted future.

During one of Admiral and Captain Janeways’ scenes together, they are debating whether to use the Borg space tunnels to get home faster, or if they should destroy the tunnels to keep the Borg from being able to get around space. Then Captain Janeway proposes that there’s a way for them to “have our cake and eat it, too.”

Despite the convenience of this final plot, one that is explicitly identified as such by that line, the finale could still have stuck the landing if we saw or felt the impact of arriving home on the Voyager crew that we have been following for seven seasons. As messy as the show sometimes got, and as underserved as some characters became after the show introduced Seven of Nine (which confuses me because the writers did such a good initial job of utilizing that character to create new dynamics with the cast), this cast had earned and deserved a depiction of their arrival home. And we never got that.

Tom Paris is my least favorite character on the show. It has nothing to do with Robert Duncan McNeill’s performance, it’s just that the character never felt particularly developed beyond his initial characterization for me. His best material, in my opinion, was in “Lineage” when Tom comforts and assures B’Elanna that he will never leave her and that he wants their children to inherit their mother’s Klingon heritage. But one thread throughout the course of the show that seemed so straightforward of a payoff to save for the finale was Tom’s reunion with his father.

Tom talks frequently over the course of the show about his strained relationship with his Admiral dad. Then once Voyager is able to establish contact with the Alpha Quadrant (another development I had mixed feelings on because it diminishes the premise of the show by minimizing the ship’s isolation), we get introduced to Admiral Paris and he becomes a recurring character. We even get a moment where he expresses his love for Tom and how much he misses him. And while we do see Tom’s reaction to this, this huge character moment isn’t a direct interaction between these two characters. So naturally you would assume that their reunion, and likely reconciliation as father and son, would be shown once Voyager returns to Earth in the finale.

But that doesn’t happen.

Even though Admiral Paris is in the finale, that reunion setup is just not payed off in any way.

We also don’t get to see Tuvok reunited with his family.

Or Seven of Nine’s first impressions of Earth or her meeting any of her relatives.

Or any indication of what our former Maquis crewmembers’ reception by Starfleet would be.

Strangely, the only satisfying character sendoff of the show is Neelix, who in an earlier episode leaves to be with a colony of his own people and serve as Starfleet’s Delta Quadrant ambassador. His goodbye to the crew is a beautifully simple scene of him walking to his ship and passing by the entire crew, who are assembled along the hallway to see him off. And we even get a payoff to his friendship with Tuvok when Tuvok briefly taps his toes as a farewell gesture to Neelix.

Neelix started as the show’s most grating character, irritatingly cheerful and toxically possessive of Kes. By the time the show ended, he had become a well-rounded and essential presence. His traumas of losing his faith and family, as well as his insecurities around his role in the crew, were well developed over the course of the show.

In a way, the finale was a perfect example of the show. The premise was solid, and the cast was totally game and performed it to the best of their ability. But when it came down to conveying any impact that this episode, or the series in its entirety, would have on its characters... the finale just sidesteps that and ends abruptly.

Janeway, Seven of Nine, Chakotay, B’Elanna, Tuvok, Harry, Tom, Kes, and The Doctor all deserved better.

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16, 1937 – August 17, 2015) was an American ballet dancer and actress best known for her role as Batgirl in the 1960s television series Batman and as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer of female superheroes" for television.

Yvonne Craig was born in Taylorville, Illinois, and was raised in Columbus, Ohio. In 1951, her family moved to the Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas, Texas, where she attended W. H. Adamson High School and then Sunset High School, from which she did not graduate due to the lack of "a single PE credit".

After being discovered by Alexandra Danilova, a ballerina and instructor, Craig joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as its youngest corps de ballet member. This training was helpful when she performed stunts while playing Batgirl.[6] She left the ballet company in 1957 "over a disagreement on casting changes" and moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of continuing her dancing career but found herself cast in film roles.

One of her earliest television roles was in an episode of the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover", 1958) alongside Neil Hamilton, who played her stepfather (later Hamilton played Police Commissioner James Gordon, Batgirl's father). Shortly afterwards, she appeared in three films—The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story and Gidget (all 1959)—and also guest-starred in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig appeared with Bing Crosby in High Time (1960) and in Seven Women from Hell (1961) featured alongside Cesar Romero. In 1962, she guest starred on the Western Laramie in the episode "The Long Road Back".

Craig starred in roles with Elvis Presley in two films: It Happened at the World's Fair (1963) and Kissin' Cousins (1964). She also starred in the cult sci-fi film Mars Needs Women (1966) and appeared in In Like Flint (1967) as a Russian ballet dancer opposite James Coburn.

During the 1960s, Craig regularly appeared in television drama series. She appeared five times on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, portraying five separate girlfriends for the titular character between 1959 and 1962. In 1960, she played Jo, a young photographer with Charles Bronson in Man with a Camera. In 1964, Craig guest-starred as Carol, an underwater photographer, on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (episode "Turn Back the Clock").[9] In 1965, Craig appeared in The Big Valley (episode "The Invaders"). Craig also appeared on Star Trek as Marta, a green-skinned Orion slave girl in the episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969).

Craig played a Navy nurse with exotic Arabian dance skills in an episode of McHale's Navy ("Pumpkin Takes Over") as well as in an episode of The Big Valley with Lee Majors and Barbara Stanwyck both aired in 1965. That same year, she appeared in an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ("The Brain-Killer Affair"), where she helps solve the mystery of a brain-endangering poison.[10] The following year she came back as an U.N.C.L.E. employee in a theatrical film, One Spy Too Many expanded from the episode "The Alexander the Greater Affair". In an episode of The Wild Wild West ("The Night of the Grand Emir") in 1966, she played an assassin who performs an exotic Arabian dance. In a 1968 episode of The Ghost & Mrs. Muir ("Haunted Honeymoon"), she played Gladys Zimmerman, a bride-to-be who was stranded overnight at Gull Cottage. In a 1970 episode of Land of the Giants ("Wild Journey"), she played one-half of a humanoid, time-observing duo (alongside Bruce Dern) who chase two of the Earth castaways (the series stars Gary Conway and Don Marshall) into the past, ultimately forcing them to relive the flight that sent them to the giants' planet.

From September 1967 until March 1968, Craig appeared in her highest-profile role as Batgirl for the third and final season of the 1960s ABC TV series Batman. As Batgirl, she wore a purple and yellow outfit and rode a "purple motorcycle with white lace trim",[6] whereas her alter ego Barbara Gordon was the librarian daughter of Commissioner Gordon.[12] The New York Times praised her for "add[ing] a scrappy girl-power element" to a TV series it described as "campy".

During this time, Craig appeared as a contestant on the game show The Dating Game (1967).

Craig reprised her Batgirl role in a 1974 public service announcement for equal pay for women sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor Wage & Hour Division. In the PSA, Batman and Robin were tied to a post amid the threat of a ticking time bomb, but Batgirl refused to release them because she was paid less than Robin, in violation of the Federal Equal Pay Law. The PSA was written and directed by Sidney Galanty, and narrated by William Dozier, who had narrated the Batman TV series. Dick Gautier played Batman this time, because Adam West was, at the time, trying to distance himself from that role.

Craig reportedly felt some connection to the character and was sad that Barbara Gordon was shot and paralyzed by the Joker in the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988).

After Batman, Craig continued to act sporadically in movies and television. She appeared in guest roles in Kentucky Jones, It Takes a Thief, The Mod Squad, Mannix and Emergency!. From 1969 to 1972, she appeared in four episodes of the comedy series Love, American Style. In 1973, she appeared in a first-season episode of Kojak ("Dark Sunday") and in 1977, she made a guest appearance in The Six Million Dollar Man ("The Infiltrators").

When her Hollywood career ended, she ventured into private business. She was briefly a co-producer of industrial shows, before starting a new career as a real estate broker. From 2009 to 2011, she voiced "Grandma" on the animated children's series Olivia. Craig published an autobiography called From Ballet to the Batcave and Beyond (2000). She appeared in the documentary film Ballets Russes (2005).

She was also a philanthropist and advocate for workers unions, free mammograms, and equal pay for women.

Craig died at age 78 at her home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, California, on August 17, 2015, from metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her liver.

I feel like I keep saying this, but I suppose it bears repeating. Media is a reflection of the times and society that it is made in. This is baked into everything that is media and pop culture, a vision of storytelling that is influenced by the way that the society and culture that makes it.

We are in a really bad place, societally speaking. Like, the 1960s may have been the Cold War, the fear of nuclear war between the US and Russia, but right now, we have not only that but also people with those launch codes who are itching for an excuse to use them, instead of being concerned about what will happen when they’re used.

In the 1960s Star Trek, the Original Series, was a reflection of “give peace a chance,” the concept that we could go forward in peace and be stronger for it. In the 1980s, Star Trek The Next Generation was reflecting the ideas of prosperity, that humanity was in a golden age, having resolved its major issues. Deep Space Nine came along to point out that the “major issues” that were resolved had really only been resolved for the upper class, and once you left the heart of that prosperous society, moved out to the margins, you saw the cracks in that facade. Voyager represented and continued the idea of TNG, of the 1990s as living in “the end of history,” a rather naive view in retrospect, but the concept was that humanity had reached some high point where it had reached its “ultimate form.” The 2000s sent that idea crashing down hard, and we saw Enterprise tackle the kick in the complacency that had been 9/11.

And so we’re in the 2020s now, with Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Picard, entering the scene with very flawed depictions of Starfleet and the Federation. I understand looking for hope in troubled times. What I’m seeing the message from these shows, however, is one of hope being found not in institutions, but individuals. That the systems fail and struggle and find themselves not measuring up to the hopes and dreams of the people within them, and so it falls upon the individuals, the individuals who question them, to embody and champion these things.

Because we live in a time of failing and struggling institutions, it’s not unreasonable to see this reflected in media. And it’s the kind of thing that Star Trek has always used its platform to call out. Yes, it’s painful that this is coming at the expense of the actual institutions of Starfleet, of the Federation. But that makes this message all the more impactful - even the utopia is susceptible to these kinds of failures. That to prevent this from happening, it requires vigilance to prevent from falling prey to this sort of thing, that to believe it can never happen to you, that you have build a society immune to this, is to already allow that kind of failure the first step it needs to walk through the door. 

I get that it’s a bitter pill to swallow. But it also seems like the message that needs to be brought up in these times, a lesson we need to keep in mind - not just that our “perfect” systems can fail, but also that we need to be aware of when they have failed and what must be done about them. 

The idea I’m seeing is that the right thing is hard, and even those we trust to lead us will sometimes take the easier road - and that’s not even a condemnation, as we see with Admiral Clancy, seeing her point out to Picard that it came down to preserving the Federation or rescuing the Romulans, and this is the lesson of “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,” that the twenty billion of Romulus pales in the face of the forty billion plus of the Federation in the numbers game, didn’t we have a whole movie about that lesson? - That we, as individuals and as a society, must watch and be aware of when this easier road is being taken, and ask ourselves are we really willing to let ourselves be what this will make us. 

Michael Burnham’s journey in the first season of Star Trek Discovery is about this idea. When she learns about Starfleet Command approving a planet-killer of a bomb on Qo’nos to end the war, she refuses. “A year ago, I stood alone. I believed that our survival was more important than our principles. I was wrong. Do we need a mutiny today to prove who we are?“ This is still a core theme of Star Trek right now, because this is the question we need to be asking ourselves. Is it enough to merely survive, or are we going to be able to look at ourselves and respect what “surviving” has made us into? What are we protecting if we give up those morals and ideals along the way?

That was a question that drove the first season of Discovery, and, potentially, will continue to play a part in Discovery in the far future of the Alpha Quadrant, at a time when Starfleet is “a ghost.” That’s the question that Picard is clearly asking by way of having him sit down and say that he feels Starfleet abandoned its duties and its honor by letting Romulans die. That’s the question that we need to ask ourselves, as we see hate and fear being spouted by our leaders, as we see those morals and ideals being torn at as the world almost literally burns.

Our world is troubled. It’s entirely in keeping with the spirit of Star Trek to see that trouble reflected in the world it portrays.

Star Trek Voyager is WILD y’all

Star Trek: Voyager individual episode spoilers ahead, no season or arc plot spoilers

The Scrappy Pilot breaks the ‘Warp 10′ barrier in a shuttle test flight, rapidly evolve into humanity’s future evolutionary state. As a fishman he kidnaps the captain, takes her on another Warp 10 flight, and they both evolve into humanity’s final form, which is a giant mud guppy. They fly to a jungle planet, have sex, and give birth to final form fish babies. The crew finds them and returns them to normal. No one ever speaks of it again, or of their fish babies which they abandoned on the jungle planet

They find 3 people trapped in The Matrix where they are being tortured by clowns (the head clown played by Michael McKean)

The Vulcan and the Star Trek equivalent of Jar Jar Binks (who is basically just a character from Cats The Musical) become a Fusion by transporting with some weird flowers, the fusion basically begs for his life because he is a new person and views being separated as being murdered but they do it anyway because they just think he’s a weirdo

Jar Jar Binks is dating a 2 year old whose species only lives 9 years (big surprise she looks like a hot 20 year old human woman)

a race of people with a disease that rots their bodies so they literally steal organs and body parts from random victims and graft onto themselves

An entire episode of ‘checkmate atheists’

A serial killer is on board and he’s that creepy guy from Alien: Resurrection, the crew debate capital punishment and then the vulcan teaches him about flowers (and almost turns into a serial killer himself) 

They find Amelia Earhart who was abducted by aliens in 1937 and has been in stasis for 200 years

 A race of silver robots eternally at war with a race of bronze robots because two planets made them to fight each other, when the two planets made peace the robots killed them all so they could continue fighting their robot war

Amish Aliens are ritualistically murdering children on their moon, no wait actually they are a benjamin button race the children are just dying of old age

And I’m only through 2 of 7 seasons

Another Night at the Warp Core Cafe (2019)

Quick, how many science fiction characters can you name? You probably know more of them than you realize. Science fiction illustrator Jeff Carlisle put all those characters -or close to all of them- in one epic scene, as they enjoy themselves at a bar after a long day of space travel or fighting evil forces, with their spaceships parked overhead. The clientele includes everyone from Mork to WALLl-E, from Obi-Wan to Audrey II, from Gizmo to Groot.

A Second Decade of Movies

Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”

But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
