Sierra Ferrell Is Like a Dream at Webster Hall
Tumblr media
Sierra Ferrell – Webster Hall – May 15, 2024
When Sierra Ferrell took the stage last night, it felt as if the entire sold-out Webster Hall had entered a collective dream state. The backdrop behind the stage showed a wooded scene, Ferrell was dressed in the style of Marie Antionette with a massive dress and stylish wig, and when she sang it was with a voice that seemed to have traveled from another era to fill the room. She opened with “Silver Dollar,” off her 2021 release, Long Time Coming, the band, dressed in matching hats and dreamlike sparkling red ties, joining in with fiddle and mandolin solos, the audience losing their minds in admiration. This dream world was somehow 18th Century France and the Grand Ole Opry in its heyday, a wooded fairy tale in the middle. Quite a voice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ferrell mixed in plenty of songs off her latest release, Trail of Flowers: “I’ll Come Off the Mountain” showing her impressive vocal range, “Chitlin Cookin’ Time in Cheatham County” a more jazzed country with a ripping electric guitar solo. The band expertly moved through multiple configurations, going quiet with just mandolin and brushed drums on the poignant “Whispering Waltz,” crowding the front of the stage for some extra country oomph on “Jeremiah,” the audience returning the favor by clapping along, leaving Ferrell alone for a lovely “Rosemary,” surrounding her single-microphone-style for a bluegrass-y “The Garden.” “I Could Drive You Crazy” had Ferrell joining on fiddle, multiple changes eventually melting into an extended outro while she walked offstage and the band played the traditional “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor.”

When she returned, her outfit had become even more dreamlike, a dazzling blue pixie who shot an arrow at the backdrop, which dropped to reveal a dreamy night sky. The second half of the set built on the first, finding the spot on the western music genre family tree where country, jazz and rock all met. The energy kicked up a notch on songs like “The Sea,” which started off at a sultry pace and then triple-timed with frantic mandolin and fiddle solos, slowed back down for bass and drum solos and then ratcheted back up again. The show ended, appropriately, with “In Dreams,” Ferrell singing, “I hope I’m in your dreams / The way you are in all of mine,” as if to every single person in the room. —A. Stein | @Neddyo

Well, if you’re just joining us, the nation has delivered an all-night victim impact statement. Labour has won a landslide and the Conservatives have suffered their worst ever general election result. Keir Starmer – the prime minister – has promised “national renewal … to fight until you believe again”. Liz Truss has failed to save South West Norfolk, let alone “the west”. That is the big picture (if not the whole picture, with turnout and Labour’s vote share notably low). Meanwhile, it’s incredible to think that only a short while ago we thought we’d eradicated measles and Nigel Farage. Both have now been brought back, largely by the same people.
But look, after the 3am to 7am shift, no one will be able to say the right doesn’t do comedy. There were moments worthy of entire Netflix specials as in sports halls and community centres various Dickensian grotesques were ushered into their Christmas future, live on stage. Alas, it was going to take more than buying the Cratchits a turkey to get out of this one. Jacob Rees-Mogg heard his fate standing next to a candidate wearing a baked bean balaclava. He’ll be crying into Nanny’s starched bosom today. Committed sewage apologist Thérèse Coffey was pumped into the sea in Suffolk Coastal. Andrea Jenkyns had the middle finger given to her by the voters of Morley and Outwood. In Welwyn Hatfield, Grant Shapps chanted “supermajority” five times into the mirror, and then it came for him.
Then again, Michael Portillo losing his seat was supposedly 1997’s big moment. So perhaps the question is: in two years’ time, which current hate figure will be presenting a cosy travelogue on Europe’s most picturesque illegal migration routes? Alternatively, do remember that one person’s onstage humiliation is another person’s milk round for directorships in the arms trade.
Speaking of absolute weapons, hat twat George Galloway wimped out of his own count in Rochdale, presumably out of fatigability. He lost to Labour. There was jubilation for the Lib Dems, who finished not a million miles behind “the natural party of government”, and for the Greens, who won all four of their target seats. The SNP can now squeeze its MPs round the flip-down dining table of a motorhome. Referendum arguments may move to Northern Ireland, with Sinn Féin now that nation’s largest Westminster party.
As for Reform … Farage won in Clacton, a constituency for which he will now have to hold surgeries, presumably by Zoom link from his hot desk in the US presidential colon. Or as he put it in his victory speech: “This is the first steps of something that is going to stun all of you” – at least confirming his political abattoir will be bolt-gunning its victims unconscious first. Farage is the horror version of Inside Out, where Mendacity is only just holding off Racism at the control console. His cultural hinterland extends to a single Goodbye, Mr Chips DVD he got free with the Sunday Times in 2008, and the idea that this hollow chancer should still be one of the most significant politicians of the age says everything about the age.
Anyway, back to the Conservatives’ four-hour in-memoriam reel. Penny Mordaunt, Jonathan Gullis, Michael Fabricant, Gillian Keegan, Steve Baker, Alex Chalk, Johnny Mercer, Michelle Donelan, Victoria Prentis, Liam Fox, Mark Harper … all out, along with many more. So many cabinet ministers fell that the ones who live may actually develop survivor guilt. It’s currently unclear how gruesome things will be among the extant Conservatives in this post-apocalyptic world. As a fictional president once wondered of Dr Strangelove, will the living not end up envying the dead? Far from it, Strangelove reassures him, forcing down an involuntary Nazi salute. What will abound is a spirit of bold curiosity for the adventure ahead!
Speaking of which, 13th fairy Suella Braverman finally turned up, holding on in Fareham and cooing: “I am sorry that my party didn’t listen to you. The Conservative party has let you down.” Expect to see her humbly attempting to disembowel fellow survivors Jeremy Hunt and James Cleverly in the forthcoming trial-by-combat for what convention demands we style as “the soul of the Conservative party”.
At his count, Rishi Sunak explained he’d already conceded the election in a congratulatory call to Keir Starmer, adding, “I take responsibility for the loss.” In Downing Street, he confirmed he would be standing down as Tory leader in some sort of due course, stressing, “I have heard your anger.” Then, instead of yet another speech straight from the Tortured Prime Minister’s Department, this one offered humility and magnanimity, as well as a pointed reminder of the positive (and fragile?) progress that saw him become the UK’s first British-Asian prime minister. What a contrast to the relentless negativity of his past six weeks. Sunak’s campaign was conducted like a gender-reveal party where the device that’s meant to release the puff of blue smoke accidentally functions as a pipe bomb and burns the house down.
It also closed out several years of mindboggling chaos, dysfunction and national decline. They won’t be playing anything from this album on the Conservative party’s Eras tour. The Tories have cycled through five prime ministers over the past eight years, to the point where they were recently found going through the rubbish, pulling the first guy back out, thinking, “Actually, he doesn’t look half bad now,” and making him foreign secretary. This is the behaviour of addicts.
Not that they have the monopoly on erraticism. Any dispassionate view of these results suggests the fabled post-Brexit “realignment” is more of a dealignment – the huge sweeping gains of this or that political moment able to be reversed in previously unthinkable timespans. Volatility might now be our defining electoral characteristic, and a rise in sectarian politics cannot and should not be ignored. Because hey – what’s the worst that can happen with that one? Meanwhile, many people who derided the simplistic “Get Brexit done” slogan in 2019 have pretended not to notice that the winner here went out under the even more gnomic banner of “Change”.
Yet in the wider global context, what a win. One summer evening in 1914, the foreign secretary, Edward Grey, famously remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe.” In our own times, a darkening has recently felt at hand, as hard- or extreme-right parties have gained ground across the continent, to say nothing of the US. But here – in this country, in this moment – a different direction has been taken. That matters today, and anyone not on the wingnut fringes, who hopes to avoid those gathering shadows, should wish Keir Starmer good luck with his task. For plenty who would snuff out the lamps are also rising – increasingly, they walk among us.

boygenius for The Stage at Suffolk Downs as part of the Re:set Concert Series' Boston stop!!
The portraits were drawn traditionally in Crayola crayon, colored pencil, and marker. I've shared some process photos and the raw scans here, as well as the digital image and the banners that were printed for the concert.
Each of the headliners had these images put in their dressing rooms as posters, and I was honored to hear that the guys loved it and asked for extra copies at the end of the night :O

INTERVIEW: Sarah Goldstone On Touring With Boygenius, Books, and Boston Octobers
Tumblr media
by Maya Santow
[…] Since her graduation from Boston University in 2009, Goldstone really has gone everywhere. Her talents on the keyboard, violin, and vocals have taken her across the globe in the past two years, touring internationally with indie artist Lucy Dacus, and now Boygenius—the indie rock supergroup composed of Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers.
Sitting in an East Boston café on June 18, just hours before performing with Boygenius at the Stage at Suffolk Downs, Goldstone describes how it felt finding out that she would be joining Boygenius on their tour while she was in Dacus’ band.
“Oh, I was really pumped,” she says. “Lucy had said that she wanted to have me there. Her manager called me and we chatted about it. It was exciting. I just love them as a group and separately.
“Boygenius: The Tour” began its United States run in early June and will be extending overseas to Europe in mid-August. Several of the tour dates, including the Boston show, are a part of the Re:SET Concert Series, featuring supporting acts like Bartees Strange, Dijon, and Clairo, with Boygenius as a headliner.
Although the tour didn’t begin until the summer of 2023, Boygenius’ first full-length studio album, titled “The Record,” was in the works much earlier. Goldstone recalls being told about the album at least a year before its March 2023 release—a powerful secret to have been keeping, given the album’s critical acclaim. “There was definitely a, you know, ‘Don’t put this on the internet’ kind of thing,” she says.
Goldstone’s first time hearing “The Record” took place at a listening party with Dacus’ touring crew in a Northern California AirBnB. With the knowledge that she would be touring with Boygenius, Goldstone approached her first listen to “The Record” from a largely practical angle.
“When you take a record that was recorded with all these different instruments, and you’re trying to squash it down to, ‘Okay, what’s a setup where I can do all of that?,’ there’s a lot of different ways you can do it,” she says. “So when I was listening through, that’s where my brain was going.”
Goldstone’s primary focus while listening was the keyboard. There is more to the instrument than meets the typical listener’s ear, she explains. “I feel like a lot of times people don’t know what keyboard’s role does because people know what piano sounds like, but maybe not the other stuff,” she says. “But there’s a lot of synth parts, there’s organ, there’s something called a Mellotron…all those weird sounds where people that come to hear it are like, ‘I don’t know what that is.’”
“My first reaction was really technical, but then I started listening for real and, you know, some of the songs make me cry as soon as I hear them,” says Goldstone of the 12 tracks that make up “The Record.” “Some of them are so funny, and, like, mean, and you know, that’s fun, too. But it took a minute for me to experience it that way,” she says.
As Goldstone began touring with Boygenius, a few tracks emerged as her favorites to perform live. “I love ‘Not Strong Enough.’ I mean, that’s like, ‘the one,’ right?” she says. “I love ‘Letter To An Old Poet’— not just because it’s the piano song! Actually, ‘Cool About It’ is one of my favorite songs, too. Plus the rockers, like ‘Satanist,’ and stuff like that, it’s just, like, so fun. But every song is good, yeah—no duds,” she laughs.
Goldstone also cites a fan project for Boygenius’ “True Blue”—a track heavily influenced by Dacus’ solo music style—as a favorite memory from the tour so far. “I think they all put blue post-it notes over their phone lights…as soon as they started playing it, blue lights came up,” she says. As it turned out, a similar fan project took place at the Boston show later that night: during the chorus of ‘True Blue,’ the audience raised heart-shaped cutouts of blue paper over their phone flashlights to create a sea of blue for the band to see. “It sounds funny to say, but it made all of us kind of emotional, actually,” she says of the earlier project.
Goldstone notes the synergetic power of Boygenius fans—the fan bases of the three indie rock forces coming together creates something greater than the sum of their parts, she says.
“People are there for the unit,” says Goldstone. “Probably everybody has one of them that they gravitate toward more just in their own personal listening, or someone’s music they’re familiar with more than the others, but you can’t tell that from the show, which I think is really cool. It doesn’t feel like you’re seeing individual fans of the three of them.”
Goldstone cites Boygenius’ closeness to one another as a major draw for their fans, aside from their music. “I feel like people are fans of their friendship,” she says. “Like, we all want that. We all want best friends that we like to make art with.”
Having been on tour together for a few weeks, says Goldstone, the band’s dynamic has begun to shine through even more onstage. “Now that everyone’s comfortable, they’re starting to horse around a little bit, and they’re jumping around,” she says of Dacus, Baker, and Bridgers. “You know, it’s just three friends that love each other so much, and they’re all very funny people. So it’s fun when they’re in the mood to do, like, comedy time during shows, you know?”
Closeness as a band—“tour camaraderie”—is a familiar feeling to Goldstone, who says that Dacus’ band grew very close during their 251 days of touring in 2021 and 2022. “Everyone’s on one bus, and everyone hangs out together on off days, and it does feel like a family road trip sometimes,” she says.
The Boygenius tour took a bit longer to achieve the same effect, says Goldstone. “It is a much bigger group. And everyone just works so hard, so there’s a little bit more distance with just getting to know everybody. I feel like now, a couple of weeks in, I’m starting to be friends with people on our own crew that maybe I didn’t get to hang with before, and that’s great,” she says.
One way in which the group has grown closer, says Goldstone, is through books. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given her philosophy major during her BU days, Goldstone says she always finds time to read while on tour, and exchanges titles with the other band members as well. “We’re all trading books,” says Goldstone.
On Dacus’ tour last year, says Goldstone, the band passed around Joan Didion’s “Play It as It Lays.” In a similar way to which fans of Boygenius bond over the often melancholy tones of their music, the band bonded over the “real bummer of a book,” says Goldstone. “We passed it around, and everyone was like, ‘Ugh, your turn.’ Like, this is brutal,” she laughs.
“So, yeah, there’s some exchange,” says Goldstone. “Lucy and I will exchange books a lot. Like, I’m really into a writer named Shirley Jackson, and Lucy read some last year.” Goldstone’s most recent tour read, Min Jin Lee’s “Pachinko,” she describes as an “instant classic,” and she plans to lend it to Julien Baker to read next.

Biden commutes sentences for 1,500 people (NPR) President Biden on Thursday announced he is commuting the prison sentences for nearly 1,500 people and pardoning 39 others in what the White House said was the largest act of clemency in a single day in modern presidential history. Most committed non-violent drug offenses in their late teens and early 20s. Many served in the U.S. military and all are active in their communities, either through church or volunteer work—including helping others with addiction recovery and navigating life after incarceration.
Trump says bringing down grocery prices is 'very hard' (USA Today) With just over a month until his return to the White House, President-elect Donald Trump said in a new interview it's "very hard" to bring down the cost of groceries for American families, raising questions about one of his key 2024 campaign promises. Despite grocery inflation cooling since its peak in 2022, grocery prices are up more than 25% from where they were in 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, adding to frustration over long-term affordability that took center stage during the 2024 race to the White House. After Trump made prices a major part of his reelection bid, expectations are high for the president-elect actually bringing down the cost of everyday goods. It's an issue many voters cited as their largest burden, according to a July USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll.
The C.E.O.s Are Tripping. (NYT) The relationship between leaders in the corporate world and psychedelics is decades old, as recounted by Michael Pollan in his book “How to Change Your Mind.” There is now a growing cottage industry of psychedelic retreats for business leaders. Guides sell curated experiences, with names like “The Journeymen Collective,” where stifled executives go on mushroom trips that promise a spiritual makeover. A long-term loosening of corporate culture as well as the premium that American businesses now put on imagination and emotional openness (Stanford’s most popular business school elective recently was a class called “Touchy Feely”) may have primed business leaders for psychedelic experimentation. Steve Jobs declared taking LSD a critical life event, one that “shows you that there’s another side to the coin.” Sam Altman said psychedelic trips could be “totally incredible.” Elon Musk has posted on X about having a prescription for ketamine, a drug that can have hallucinogenic effects.
Terror for Mexicans as war rages inside Sinaloa cartel (Guardian) Three months of war between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel have left more than a thousand dead or disappeared, and Culiacán in a unique kind of humanitarian crisis. Culichis, as the city’s inhabitants are known, are trying to return to normality—but are constantly reminded that they live at the whim of organised crime. The conflict burst into the open on 9 September, six weeks after the arrest of two of Mexico’s most powerful crime bosses in El Paso, Texas. The government has piled 11,000 soldiers in the city, but the violence shows few signs of ending. More than 500 people have been killed since the conflict began, quadrupling the prior rate of homicides. One body turned up in a river; another was burned to bones in a field on the edge of town. As the war goes on, the toll of dead, disappeared and displaced keeps rising—and no one can say how long it will last.
Argentina accuses Venezuela of harassing opposition members sheltering at its embassy in Caracas (AP) Argentina’s government on Wednesday accused its Venezuelan counterpart of continually harassing six members of the political opposition who have been sheltering for months in the Argentine diplomatic compound in the capital, Caracas. It also urged the Organization of American States to pressure Venezuela to allow the safe departure of the six people to Argentina. Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werhein said the Venezuelan government is subjecting them to a “strategy of physical exhaustion” and “psychological terror” through prolonged harassment. The four men and two women have lived at the ambassador’s residence since March to avoid arrest. The asylum seekers are subjected to water cuts, interruptions in electricity, restrictions on the entry of food and the constant presence of security forces in the vicinity of the diplomatic headquarters.
British food fight (Washington Post) As the United Kingdom grapples with the shaky start of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s tenure, an odd flash point has surfaced in Parliament: sandwiches. It started when Kemi Badenoch, the firebrand who last month ascended to the leadership of Britain’s Conservative Party, took an odd swipe at the humble office lunch staple in a recent magazine profile. “Lunch is for wimps,” Badenoch told the Spectator. “I have food brought in and I work and eat at the same time. There’s no time. … Sometimes I will get a steak. … I’m not a sandwich person, I don’t think sandwiches are a real food, it’s what you have for breakfast.” A spokesman for the prime minister, who represents the Labour Party, fired back Thursday when asked about Badenoch’s comments. “The prime minister is quite happy with a sandwich lunch,” Starmer’s spokesperson said. “It’s a great British institution.” And other politicians waded into the sandwich row. Variants of sandwiches appear across cultures, but the sandwich is said to take its English name from John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, who desired a meal he could eat without cutlery while gambling. Sandwiches are deemed a cultural touchstone in Britain.
Switzerland plans revamp of Cold War-era nuclear bunker network (Reuters) Switzerland wants to update its network of ageing nuclear shelters, which are increasingly seen as an asset at a time of greater global uncertainty, notably since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Thanks to a 1963 law, Switzerland is already ahead of neighbours like Germany. Each of its 9 million residents, including foreigners and refugees, is guaranteed a spot in a bunker to protect them from bombs and nuclear radiation. "In the coming years, the (Swiss) Confederation wants to remove some of the exceptions to the current rules and update some of the older shelters," Louis-Henri Delarageaz, civil protection commander for the Vaud canton, told Reuters. The government launched consultations in October to ensure Swiss "resilience in the event of armed conflict" and plans a 220 million Swiss franc ($250 million) upgrade of old structures.
Russia launches massive attack on Ukraine’s energy sector (CNN) Russia launched a new widespread attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, with some 93 missiles and 200 drones, forcing the country to implement emergency power outages, Ukrainian authorities said on Friday. Streets in the capital Kyiv remained largely empty Friday morning as Ukraine’s air force warned of the threat of ballistic and cruise missiles potentially targeting parts of the country. Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s energy grid operator, said it was introducing emergency power outages across the country.
After Assad’s demise, Turkey is emerging a winner in Syria (Washington Post) Turkey, whose militant proxies have surged through Syria in recent days, is emerging as the outside power with the strongest hand in steering the country’s political transition. On Thursday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, the Turkish capital. The meeting reflected the central role Turkey will play in the weeks to come. Turkey reopened its embassy in Damascus on Thursday, appointing a temporary ambassador after years of severed relations. Lawmakers from Erdogan’s ruling party have already taken Turkish businessmen on scouting missions to Syrian cities like Aleppo, where lucrative construction contracts may soon be on offer. Ankara is also encouraging more than 3 million Syrian refugees in Turkey to eventually return home, when conditions permit. Ten years ago, Erdogan, in a scathing attack on the Assad regime and its attacks on Syrian civilians, vowed to one day pray in the courtyards of the famous Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. That dream will soon be a reality.
Russia packs up military assets in Syria (Washington Post) Russia is dismantling equipment at an air base in Syria and loading it into cargo planes after the ouster of longtime Moscow client Bashar al-Assad, images show. Captured by Maxar on Friday morning, the images reveal two An-124 cargo planes at Russia’s Hmeimim airfield with their nose cones opened to receive equipment, the commercial firm said. Nearby, a Ka-52 attack helicopter and a S-400 air defense unit were being dismantled, most likely for their removal via the cargo planes, Maxar said. Russia used the base 15 miles south of Latakia to support the Assad regime in Syria’s 13-year civil war. It wasn’t clear whether Moscow planned to abandon Syria altogether. It has used Hmeimim to project power across the Middle East and Africa; in 2017, it signed a 49-year lease on the facility. The Russian naval base at Tartus, built during the Soviet era, supports ships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. “It’s clear that a withdrawal is now underway,” said Dara Massicot, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. But “it’s unclear if they will fully evacuate or partially draw down at present.”
American pilgrim imprisoned in Assad’s Syria calls his release from prison a ‘blessing’ (AP) An American who disappeared seven months ago into former Syrian President Bashar Assad’s notorious prison system said early Friday he was released by the “liberators” who arrived in Damascus a day after the longtime ruler fled the capital. Travis Timmerman called his release a “blessing” when he spoke to The Associated Press from a hotel room in Damascus, where he arrived late Thursday. He was among the thousands of people released from Syria’s sprawling military prisons this week after rebels reached Damascus, overthrowing Assad and ending his family’s 54-year rule. Timmerman, 29, said he had gone to Syria on a Christian pilgrimage and was not ill-treated while in Palestine Branch, a notorious detention facility operated by Syrian intelligence. He said he was freed by “the liberators who came into the prison and knocked the door down (of his cell) with a hammer.” He was detained after he crossed into Syria from a mountain along the eastern Lebanese town of Zahle in June, while on a Christian pilgrimage. His parents hailed his unexpected recovery as a "Christmas miracle" after seven months with no contact.
Bloody siege ends Myanmar army control of western border (BBC) The end, when it came for the BGP5 barracks, was loud and brutal. First, a crackly speaker calling out for their surrender; then, a thunderous barrage of artillery, rockets and rifle fire that tore chunks out of the buildings in which hundreds of soldiers were hiding. BGP5—the letters stand for Border Guard Police—was the Myanmar military junta's last stand in northern Rakhine State, which lies along the border with Bangladesh. Video by the insurgent Arakan Army (AA) which was besieging the base shows their rag-tag fighters, many barefoot, firing an assortment of weapons into the base, while air force jets roar over their heads. It was a ferocious battle—perhaps the bloodiest of the civil war which has consumed Myanmar since the military seized power in a coup in 2021. For the coup leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, this has been yet another humiliating defeat after a year of military setbacks. For the first time his regime has lost control of an entire border: the 270km (170 miles) dividing Myanmar from Bangladesh now wholly under AA control.
It’s Time to Talk About Pornography, Scholars Say (NYT) Brian Willoughby knows he’s doing a good job when parents become uncomfortable. That’s because part of his job involves telling them that their teenagers are looking at pornography—hard-core, explicit, often violent. Sometimes, the conversation is with a church group. Dr. Willoughby is a social scientist at Brigham Young University, where he studies the pornography habits of adolescents and the impact this has on relationships. In the past, many parents have tried to ignore the watching of pornography by their children, forbid its use or wish it away. But scholars who study the adolescent use of online pornography say that the behavior is so commonplace and impossible to prevent that a more pragmatic approach is required. When it comes to pornography, they want us to talk about it. The aim: to teach adolescents that the explicit content they encounter is unrealistic, misleading about many sexual relations and, as a result, potentially harmful. The approach does not condone the content or encourage its use, Dr. Willoughby emphasized, but acknowledges its ubiquity and unrealistic, hard-core nature. What’s needed, researchers say, are frank conversations between parents and children.

11 November 1940:
One of the least known episodes of the Battle of Britain concerns the participation of the ‘Corpo Aereo Italiano’, or ‘CAI’ for shorts.
The Battle was entering its final stages when Mussolini decided to give the Luftwaffe a hand and thus, against Goering’s wishes, the CAI was formed on 10 September 1940. The force consisted of about 200 aircraft: 2 ‘wings’ of Fiat BR.20M medium bombers (13º and 43º Stormo), 1 wing of fighters divided in 2 Gruppos (18º Gruppo equipped with G.50bis and 20º Gruppo equipped with Fiat CR.42s biplanes), and a ‘Squadriglia’ of Cant Z.1007bis for tactical reconnaissance.
During September and October, the Italian units arrived from Italy to their assigned airfields in Belgium, a move that led the Belgian government in exile to declare war on Italy. Operations started on the 24 of November with a night bombing raid on Felixstowe and Harwich, followed by an attack on Ramsgate on the 27, and another on the 29 (considered to be the last ‘official’ day of the Battle of Britain). Other attacks followed during November with the largest one taking place on November 11, curiously the same day in which half the Italian battle fleet was put out of action by the British at Taranto. On that day, 10 BR.20Ms carrying three 250 Kg bombs each, and escorted by 42 CR.42s, 46 G. 50s and supporting Bf 109s were to attack Harwich. Due to bad weather the G.50s and Bf 109s were forced to return to base, leaving only the CR.42s to act as escort for the bombers.
Hurricanes of 17 and 257 squadrons were scrambled to meet the Italians, being later joined by elements of 46 and 249 squadrons. The final tally of the ensuing air battles was 3 BR.20s and 3 CR.42s shot down against 2 Hurricanes damaged. To give an idea of how exacerbated claims usually were during these chaotic clashes, RAF pilots claimed a total of 9 BR.20s destroyed, 1 damaged, and 5 CR.42s destroyed, 4 probable and 3 damaged. In return, the Italians claimed 9 enemy fighters.
One of the 3 Fiat BR.20s actually shot down, and the only Italian bomber (in addition to a few fighters) to ever have crash land on British soil, was the one in this photo, (243-2/MM22621) flown by Sottotenente Pietro Appiani. Pursued by a 46 Squadron’s trio (Leggett, Hedley and Walker), it was damaged and forced to crash land in Tangham Forest, Bromeswell, near Woodbridge, Suffolk.
The radio-operator, 1o Avieri Armando Paolini, had been killed in the air. The co-pilot Sergente Pilota Giuliano Rigolone and the flight engineer, 1o Avieri Motorista Emmanuelle De Gasperi, were wounded (Rigolone later died of his wounds). The pilot Sottotenente Pietro Appiani, De Gasperi, the unit’s photographer Avieri Sc. Mario Pensa, and a sixth crewmember, 1o Avieri Elvino Cerrosi (front air gunner and bombardier), all survived the crash and became POWs.
MM22621 was later removed to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough for evaluation, but not before being visited by some British soldiers (judging by the waist size, probably Home Guard), who were more than delighted to find in the wreckage a case containing Italian delicacies and a couple of bottles of wine. No doubt a more then welcome change to their war-time British diet!

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Unleash Three-Hour Show on Forest Hills Stadium on Friday Night
Tumblr media
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – Forest Hills Stadium – August 16, 2024
Prior to the Paris Olympics, if someone had mentioned Australia and Raygun in the same sentence, you’d have been forgiven for assuming it the reference was to a song or album by the madly prolific (and sci-fi adjacent) Australian rock outfit King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. While that country’s reputation still recovers from the breakdancer who couldn’t dance, those assembled at Forest Hills Stadium on Friday turned their attention to the Australian rock band that can, and does, do it all. Their three-hour set — the first of two weekend appearances at the venue — kicked off with the live debut of the blues-heavy “Field of Vision,” off the recently released Flight b741, the six-piece’s 26th(!) LP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group’s music covers a wide array of genres, and their shaggy fans of all ages were as comfortable in tie-dyes as they were in the mosh pits erupting throughout the night, first for a speedy, ear-splitting rendition of “Gamma Knife.” Fitting for the season, those mosh pits were shaped like hurricanes, with bodies increasingly moving faster toward the center, except for the inevitable one or two standing still in the eye of the storm. Friday’s show gave the band as much room as they needed to display all facets of Gizzardom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Mr. Beat,” a sing-along, evolved into a jam that could be played out into infinity. With the sun still shining, the music was firmly on the boogie end of the spectrum with an equally playful rendition of the harmonica-heavy, aptly titled “Boogieman Sam.” But as day turned into night with a red sun setting into Manhattan’s hazy skies, the set turned toward the sextet’s heavier jams of the brown-acid variety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First came the stellar four-song string of Gizzy mind-palace classics, “I’m in Your Mind,” “I’m Not in Your Mind,” “Cellophane” and “I'm in Your Mind Fuzz.” “God is real. God is a black hole,” announced someone from the stage as they kicked off the speed-metal “Self-Immolate,” complete with an extended, slow-burning drum solo from the inimitable Michael Cavanagh. The tune itself immolated amongst a barraging backdrop of animated, burning flames. Their songs off 2019’s Infest the Rats’ Nest remain the high-water mark for intensity and rocking the fuck out, and it was a bold and impressive feat to tear through that material at the midpoint of a three-hour set, leaving it with their human drummer still intact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Gila Monster” was another fan favorite, off last year’s sprawlingly titled PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation. The fans enthusiastically intoning, “Gila, Gila, Gila” felt powerful enough to summon some kind of monster from somewhere in the city, assisted by vocal effects and chants that could’ve rattled out from the depths of a didgeridoo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The band welcomed a fan named Gabby to sing a vocal intro to “Nuclear Fusion” that Ambrose Kenny-Smith dubbed “fucking haunting.” Just as impressive as their never-ending discography, King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard play wildly different sets each night, an audacious feat on its own but especially so when playing three-hour shows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somewhere along the way, Friday’s set reached the all gas, no brakes mark and never let up, finishing with “Rattlesnake” and “K.G.L.W.” Welcome to the city that never sleeps to the world’s most prolific band. —Dan Rickershauser | @D4nRicks

Julie Announces Debut Album 'my anti-aircraft friend' with New Single 'clairbourne practice'
Tumblr media
Los Angeles band and art collective julie has announced their highly-anticipated debut album, *my anti-aircraft friend*, set for release on September 13th via Atlantic Records. To accompany this announcement, julie has unveiled the single "clairbourne practice," which is complemented by shadowy visuals directed by Lizzie Klien and the band itself. Discussing "clairbourne practice," julie explains, "It’s about two voices clashing and conflicting, struggling to understand each other. The vocal layering in this track is perhaps the most androgynous on the album. It represents two people saying the same thing yet failing to hear each other. We aimed for the loud and quiet parts to be stark opposites—sweet, then destructive, repeating the cycle." This summer, julie will be performing across North America, starting with a series of shows supporting Faye Webster in July, followed by a larger tour in August with Alex G. The band will also headline select dates on the West Coast, supported by hello mary and Dutch Interior. Tickets for all shows are available now. julie burst onto the scene in 2020 with their single "flutter," which has garnered millions of streams. However, the band's roots trace back to the late 2010s when vocalist and guitarist Keyan Pourzand, drummer Dillon Lee, and vocalist and bassist Alex Brady began playing local shows in Orange County. Relocating to Los Angeles in 2019 for design school, the trio began crafting the songs that would become their debut album. In 2021, they released the EP *pushing daisies*, featuring tracks like "skipping tiles" and "april’s-bloom," followed by the 2022 double single "pg.4 picture of three hedges" / "through your window." Check out “Clairbourne Practice” below: *my anti-aircraft friend* represents a significant evolution for julie, showcasing a more confident and sonically cohesive band. After years of refining their sound, this album reflects their deep understanding of alternative music's history and their innovative approach to bending genre conventions. Each member of julie is a multidisciplinary artist—Pourzand works in sculpture, Brady writes and paints, and Lee is also a painter and illustrator. This artistic synergy influences every aspect of their releases, from the music to the art and packaging, down to the instruments they play onstage. For listeners navigating the challenges of contemporary life, julie's music offers both a cathartic escape and a means of finding self-acceptance amidst uncertainty. It looks like a Place of Growth
Intercultural Competence at ICON Architecture Boston means embracing diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration, and navigating cultural nuances seamlessly. It's reflected in our daily interactions, where team members from varied backgrounds contribute to a rich tapestry of ideas, creating a vibrant and inclusive work environment. Today kicked off with shadowing a meeting led by our mentor, Joe, delving into project specifications and scheduling. The day took an exciting turn with a site visit to the Suffolk Downs Multifamily project by ICON Architecture. The emphasis on Awareness and Development factors was palpable, evident from the weekly update meeting that initiated the tour. The transparent communication and compliance throughout the project showcased a commitment to fairness and inclusivity, valuing every contribution.
From the initial rendering stages at the office desk to the construction site completion, witnessing the resolution of challenges with fair intervention and influence at each step was enlightening. Day 2 at ICON Architecture provided a deeper dive into the constructional stage, allowing us to connect with an architect who has been with the project since its inception, providing invaluable insights. Overall, it was a fantastic day of exploration and understanding of the intricacies of project dynamics.
