Sierra Ferrell Is Like a Dream at Webster Hall
Sierra Ferrell â Webster Hall â May 15, 2024
When Sierra Ferrell took the stage last night, it felt as if the entire sold-out Webster Hall had entered a collective dream state. The backdrop behind the stage showed a wooded scene, Ferrell was dressed in the style of Marie Antionette with a massive dress and stylish wig, and when she sang it was with a voice that seemed to have traveled from another era to fill the room. She opened with âSilver Dollar,â off her 2021 release, Long Time Coming, the band, dressed in matching hats and dreamlike sparkling red ties, joining in with fiddle and mandolin solos, the audience losing their minds in admiration. This dream world was somehow 18th Century France and the Grand Ole Opry in its heyday, a wooded fairy tale in the middle. Quite a voice.
Ferrell mixed in plenty of songs off her latest release, Trail of Flowers: âIâll Come Off the Mountainâ showing her impressive vocal range, âChitlin Cookinâ Time in Cheatham Countyâ a more jazzed country with a ripping electric guitar solo. The band expertly moved through multiple configurations, going quiet with just mandolin and brushed drums on the poignant âWhispering Waltz,â crowding the front of the stage for some extra country oomph on âJeremiah,â the audience returning the favor by clapping along, leaving Ferrell alone for a lovely âRosemary,â surrounding her single-microphone-style for a bluegrass-y âThe Garden.â âI Could Drive You Crazyâ had Ferrell joining on fiddle, multiple changes eventually melting into an extended outro while she walked offstage and the band played the traditional âMake Me a Pallet on Your Floor.â
When she returned, her outfit had become even more dreamlike, a dazzling blue pixie who shot an arrow at the backdrop, which dropped to reveal a dreamy night sky. The second half of the set built on the first, finding the spot on the western music genre family tree where country, jazz and rock all met. The energy kicked up a notch on songs like âThe Sea,â which started off at a sultry pace and then triple-timed with frantic mandolin and fiddle solos, slowed back down for bass and drum solos and then ratcheted back up again. The show ended, appropriately, with âIn Dreams,â Ferrell singing, âI hope Iâm in your dreams / The way you are in all of mine,â as if to every single person in the room. âA. Stein | @Neddyo

Well, if youâre just joining us, the nation has delivered an all-night victim impact statement. Labour has won a landslide and the Conservatives have suffered their worst ever general election result. Keir Starmer â the prime minister â has promised ânational renewal ⊠to fight until you believe againâ. Liz Truss has failed to save South West Norfolk, let alone âthe westâ. That is the big picture (if not the whole picture, with turnout and Labourâs vote share notably low). Meanwhile, itâs incredible to think that only a short while ago we thought weâd eradicated measles and Nigel Farage. Both have now been brought back, largely by the same people.
But look, after the 3am to 7am shift, no one will be able to say the right doesnât do comedy. There were moments worthy of entire Netflix specials as in sports halls and community centres various Dickensian grotesques were ushered into their Christmas future, live on stage. Alas, it was going to take more than buying the Cratchits a turkey to get out of this one. Jacob Rees-Mogg heard his fate standing next to a candidate wearing a baked bean balaclava. Heâll be crying into Nannyâs starched bosom today. Committed sewage apologist ThĂ©rĂšse Coffey was pumped into the sea in Suffolk Coastal. Andrea Jenkyns had the middle finger given to her by the voters of Morley and Outwood. In Welwyn Hatfield, Grant Shapps chanted âsupermajorityâ five times into the mirror, and then it came for him.
Then again, Michael Portillo losing his seat was supposedly 1997âs big moment. So perhaps the question is: in two yearsâ time, which current hate figure will be presenting a cosy travelogue on Europeâs most picturesque illegal migration routes? Alternatively, do remember that one personâs onstage humiliation is another personâs milk round for directorships in the arms trade.
Speaking of absolute weapons, hat twat George Galloway wimped out of his own count in Rochdale, presumably out of fatigability. He lost to Labour. There was jubilation for the Lib Dems, who finished not a million miles behind âthe natural party of governmentâ, and for the Greens, who won all four of their target seats. The SNP can now squeeze its MPs round the flip-down dining table of a motorhome. Referendum arguments may move to Northern Ireland, with Sinn FĂ©in now that nationâs largest Westminster party.
As for Reform ⊠Farage won in Clacton, a constituency for which he will now have to hold surgeries, presumably by Zoom link from his hot desk in the US presidential colon. Or as he put it in his victory speech: âThis is the first steps of something that is going to stun all of youâ â at least confirming his political abattoir will be bolt-gunning its victims unconscious first. Farage is the horror version of Inside Out, where Mendacity is only just holding off Racism at the control console. His cultural hinterland extends to a single Goodbye, Mr Chips DVD he got free with the Sunday Times in 2008, and the idea that this hollow chancer should still be one of the most significant politicians of the age says everything about the age.
Anyway, back to the Conservativesâ four-hour in-memoriam reel. Penny Mordaunt, Jonathan Gullis, Michael Fabricant, Gillian Keegan, Steve Baker, Alex Chalk, Johnny Mercer, Michelle Donelan, Victoria Prentis, Liam Fox, Mark Harper ⊠all out, along with many more. So many cabinet ministers fell that the ones who live may actually develop survivor guilt. Itâs currently unclear how gruesome things will be among the extant Conservatives in this post-apocalyptic world. As a fictional president once wondered of Dr Strangelove, will the living not end up envying the dead? Far from it, Strangelove reassures him, forcing down an involuntary Nazi salute. What will abound is a spirit of bold curiosity for the adventure ahead!
Speaking of which, 13th fairy Suella Braverman finally turned up, holding on in Fareham and cooing: âI am sorry that my party didnât listen to you. The Conservative party has let you down.â Expect to see her humbly attempting to disembowel fellow survivors Jeremy Hunt and James Cleverly in the forthcoming trial-by-combat for what convention demands we style as âthe soul of the Conservative partyâ.
At his count, Rishi Sunak explained heâd already conceded the election in a congratulatory call to Keir Starmer, adding, âI take responsibility for the loss.â In Downing Street, he confirmed he would be standing down as Tory leader in some sort of due course, stressing, âI have heard your anger.â Then, instead of yet another speech straight from the Tortured Prime Ministerâs Department, this one offered humility and magnanimity, as well as a pointed reminder of the positive (and fragile?) progress that saw him become the UKâs first British-Asian prime minister. What a contrast to the relentless negativity of his past six weeks. Sunakâs campaign was conducted like a gender-reveal party where the device thatâs meant to release the puff of blue smoke accidentally functions as a pipe bomb and burns the house down.
It also closed out several years of mindboggling chaos, dysfunction and national decline. They wonât be playing anything from this album on the Conservative partyâs Eras tour. The Tories have cycled through five prime ministers over the past eight years, to the point where they were recently found going through the rubbish, pulling the first guy back out, thinking, âActually, he doesnât look half bad now,â and making him foreign secretary. This is the behaviour of addicts.
Not that they have the monopoly on erraticism. Any dispassionate view of these results suggests the fabled post-Brexit ârealignmentâ is more of a dealignment â the huge sweeping gains of this or that political moment able to be reversed in previously unthinkable timespans. Volatility might now be our defining electoral characteristic, and a rise in sectarian politics cannot and should not be ignored. Because hey â whatâs the worst that can happen with that one? Meanwhile, many people who derided the simplistic âGet Brexit doneâ slogan in 2019 have pretended not to notice that the winner here went out under the even more gnomic banner of âChangeâ.
Yet in the wider global context, what a win. One summer evening in 1914, the foreign secretary, Edward Grey, famously remarked: âThe lamps are going out all over Europe.â In our own times, a darkening has recently felt at hand, as hard- or extreme-right parties have gained ground across the continent, to say nothing of the US. But here â in this country, in this moment â a different direction has been taken. That matters today, and anyone not on the wingnut fringes, who hopes to avoid those gathering shadows, should wish Keir Starmer good luck with his task. For plenty who would snuff out the lamps are also rising â increasingly, they walk among us.

boygenius for The Stage at Suffolk Downs as part of the Re:set Concert Series' Boston stop!!
The portraits were drawn traditionally in Crayola crayon, colored pencil, and marker. I've shared some process photos and the raw scans here, as well as the digital image and the banners that were printed for the concert.
Each of the headliners had these images put in their dressing rooms as posters, and I was honored to hear that the guys loved it and asked for extra copies at the end of the night :O

INTERVIEW: Sarah Goldstone On Touring With Boygenius, Books, and Boston Octobers
by Maya Santow
[âŠ] Since her graduation from Boston University in 2009, Goldstone really has gone everywhere. Her talents on the keyboard, violin, and vocals have taken her across the globe in the past two years, touring internationally with indie artist Lucy Dacus, and now Boygeniusâthe indie rock supergroup composed of Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers.
Sitting in an East Boston cafĂ© on June 18, just hours before performing with Boygenius at the Stage at Suffolk Downs, Goldstone describes how it felt finding out that she would be joining Boygenius on their tour while she was in Dacusâ band.
âOh, I was really pumped,â she says. âLucy had said that she wanted to have me there. Her manager called me and we chatted about it. It was exciting. I just love them as a group and separately.
âBoygenius: The Tourâ began its United States run in early June and will be extending overseas to Europe in mid-August. Several of the tour dates, including the Boston show, are a part of the Re:SET Concert Series, featuring supporting acts like Bartees Strange, Dijon, and Clairo, with Boygenius as a headliner.
Although the tour didnât begin until the summer of 2023, Boygeniusâ first full-length studio album, titled âThe Record,â was in the works much earlier. Goldstone recalls being told about the album at least a year before its March 2023 releaseâa powerful secret to have been keeping, given the albumâs critical acclaim. âThere was definitely a, you know, âDonât put this on the internetâ kind of thing,â she says.
Goldstoneâs first time hearing âThe Recordâ took place at a listening party with Dacusâ touring crew in a Northern California AirBnB. With the knowledge that she would be touring with Boygenius, Goldstone approached her first listen to âThe Recordâ from a largely practical angle.
âWhen you take a record that was recorded with all these different instruments, and youâre trying to squash it down to, âOkay, whatâs a setup where I can do all of that?,â thereâs a lot of different ways you can do it,â she says. âSo when I was listening through, thatâs where my brain was going.â
Goldstoneâs primary focus while listening was the keyboard. There is more to the instrument than meets the typical listenerâs ear, she explains. âI feel like a lot of times people donât know what keyboardâs role does because people know what piano sounds like, but maybe not the other stuff,â she says. âBut thereâs a lot of synth parts, thereâs organ, thereâs something called a MellotronâŠall those weird sounds where people that come to hear it are like, âI donât know what that is.ââ
âMy first reaction was really technical, but then I started listening for real and, you know, some of the songs make me cry as soon as I hear them,â says Goldstone of the 12 tracks that make up âThe Record.â âSome of them are so funny, and, like, mean, and you know, thatâs fun, too. But it took a minute for me to experience it that way,â she says.
As Goldstone began touring with Boygenius, a few tracks emerged as her favorites to perform live. âI love âNot Strong Enough.â I mean, thatâs like, âthe one,â right?â she says. âI love âLetter To An Old Poetââ not just because itâs the piano song! Actually, âCool About Itâ is one of my favorite songs, too. Plus the rockers, like âSatanist,â and stuff like that, itâs just, like, so fun. But every song is good, yeahâno duds,â she laughs.
Goldstone also cites a fan project for Boygeniusâ âTrue Blueââa track heavily influenced by Dacusâ solo music styleâas a favorite memory from the tour so far. âI think they all put blue post-it notes over their phone lightsâŠas soon as they started playing it, blue lights came up,â she says. As it turned out, a similar fan project took place at the Boston show later that night: during the chorus of âTrue Blue,â the audience raised heart-shaped cutouts of blue paper over their phone flashlights to create a sea of blue for the band to see. âIt sounds funny to say, but it made all of us kind of emotional, actually,â she says of the earlier project.
Goldstone notes the synergetic power of Boygenius fansâthe fan bases of the three indie rock forces coming together creates something greater than the sum of their parts, she says.
âPeople are there for the unit,â says Goldstone. âProbably everybody has one of them that they gravitate toward more just in their own personal listening, or someoneâs music theyâre familiar with more than the others, but you canât tell that from the show, which I think is really cool. It doesnât feel like youâre seeing individual fans of the three of them.â
Goldstone cites Boygeniusâ closeness to one another as a major draw for their fans, aside from their music. âI feel like people are fans of their friendship,â she says. âLike, we all want that. We all want best friends that we like to make art with.â
Having been on tour together for a few weeks, says Goldstone, the bandâs dynamic has begun to shine through even more onstage. âNow that everyoneâs comfortable, theyâre starting to horse around a little bit, and theyâre jumping around,â she says of Dacus, Baker, and Bridgers. âYou know, itâs just three friends that love each other so much, and theyâre all very funny people. So itâs fun when theyâre in the mood to do, like, comedy time during shows, you know?â
Closeness as a bandââtour camaraderieââis a familiar feeling to Goldstone, who says that Dacusâ band grew very close during their 251 days of touring in 2021 and 2022. âEveryoneâs on one bus, and everyone hangs out together on off days, and it does feel like a family road trip sometimes,â she says.
The Boygenius tour took a bit longer to achieve the same effect, says Goldstone. âIt is a much bigger group. And everyone just works so hard, so thereâs a little bit more distance with just getting to know everybody. I feel like now, a couple of weeks in, Iâm starting to be friends with people on our own crew that maybe I didnât get to hang with before, and thatâs great,â she says.
One way in which the group has grown closer, says Goldstone, is through books. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given her philosophy major during her BU days, Goldstone says she always finds time to read while on tour, and exchanges titles with the other band members as well. âWeâre all trading books,â says Goldstone.
On Dacusâ tour last year, says Goldstone, the band passed around Joan Didionâs âPlay It as It Lays.â In a similar way to which fans of Boygenius bond over the often melancholy tones of their music, the band bonded over the âreal bummer of a book,â says Goldstone. âWe passed it around, and everyone was like, âUgh, your turn.â Like, this is brutal,â she laughs.
âSo, yeah, thereâs some exchange,â says Goldstone. âLucy and I will exchange books a lot. Like, Iâm really into a writer named Shirley Jackson, and Lucy read some last year.â Goldstoneâs most recent tour read, Min Jin Leeâs âPachinko,â she describes as an âinstant classic,â and she plans to lend it to Julien Baker to read next.

11 November 1940:
One of the least known episodes of the Battle of Britain concerns the participation of the âCorpo Aereo Italianoâ, or âCAIâ for shorts.
The Battle was entering its final stages when Mussolini decided to give the Luftwaffe a hand and thus, against Goeringâs wishes, the CAI was formed on 10 September 1940. The force consisted of about 200 aircraft: 2 âwingsâ of Fiat BR.20M medium bombers (13Âș and 43Âș Stormo), 1 wing of fighters divided in 2 Gruppos (18Âș Gruppo equipped with G.50bis and 20Âș Gruppo equipped with Fiat CR.42s biplanes), and a âSquadrigliaâ of Cant Z.1007bis for tactical reconnaissance.
During September and October, the Italian units arrived from Italy to their assigned airfields in Belgium, a move that led the Belgian government in exile to declare war on Italy. Operations started on the 24 of November with a night bombing raid on Felixstowe and Harwich, followed by an attack on Ramsgate on the 27, and another on the 29 (considered to be the last âofficialâ day of the Battle of Britain). Other attacks followed during November with the largest one taking place on November 11, curiously the same day in which half the Italian battle fleet was put out of action by the British at Taranto. On that day, 10 BR.20Ms carrying three 250 Kg bombs each, and escorted by 42 CR.42s, 46 G. 50s and supporting Bf 109s were to attack Harwich. Due to bad weather the G.50s and Bf 109s were forced to return to base, leaving only the CR.42s to act as escort for the bombers.
Hurricanes of 17 and 257 squadrons were scrambled to meet the Italians, being later joined by elements of 46 and 249 squadrons. The final tally of the ensuing air battles was 3 BR.20s and 3 CR.42s shot down against 2 Hurricanes damaged. To give an idea of how exacerbated claims usually were during these chaotic clashes, RAF pilots claimed a total of 9 BR.20s destroyed, 1 damaged, and 5 CR.42s destroyed, 4 probable and 3 damaged. In return, the Italians claimed 9 enemy fighters.
One of the 3 Fiat BR.20s actually shot down, and the only Italian bomber (in addition to a few fighters) to ever have crash land on British soil, was the one in this photo, (243-2/MM22621) flown by Sottotenente Pietro Appiani. Pursued by a 46 Squadronâs trio (Leggett, Hedley and Walker), it was damaged and forced to crash land in Tangham Forest, Bromeswell, near Woodbridge, Suffolk.
The radio-operator, 1o Avieri Armando Paolini, had been killed in the air. The co-pilot Sergente Pilota Giuliano Rigolone and the flight engineer, 1o Avieri Motorista Emmanuelle De Gasperi, were wounded (Rigolone later died of his wounds). The pilot Sottotenente Pietro Appiani, De Gasperi, the unitâs photographer Avieri Sc. Mario Pensa, and a sixth crewmember, 1o Avieri Elvino Cerrosi (front air gunner and bombardier), all survived the crash and became POWs.
MM22621 was later removed to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough for evaluation, but not before being visited by some British soldiers (judging by the waist size, probably Home Guard), who were more than delighted to find in the wreckage a case containing Italian delicacies and a couple of bottles of wine. No doubt a more then welcome change to their war-time British diet!

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Unleash Three-Hour Show on Forest Hills Stadium on Friday Night
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard â Forest Hills Stadium â August 16, 2024
Prior to the Paris Olympics, if someone had mentioned Australia and Raygun in the same sentence, youâd have been forgiven for assuming it the reference was to a song or album by the madly prolific (and sci-fi adjacent) Australian rock outfit King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. While that countryâs reputation still recovers from the breakdancer who couldnât dance, those assembled at Forest Hills Stadium on Friday turned their attention to the Australian rock band that can, and does, do it all. Their three-hour set â the first of two weekend appearances at the venue â kicked off with the live debut of the blues-heavy âField of Vision,â off the recently released Flight b741, the six-pieceâs 26th(!) LP.
The groupâs music covers a wide array of genres, and their shaggy fans of all ages were as comfortable in tie-dyes as they were in the mosh pits erupting throughout the night, first for a speedy, ear-splitting rendition of âGamma Knife.â Fitting for the season, those mosh pits were shaped like hurricanes, with bodies increasingly moving faster toward the center, except for the inevitable one or two standing still in the eye of the storm. Fridayâs show gave the band as much room as they needed to display all facets of Gizzardom.Â
âMr. Beat,â a sing-along, evolved into a jam that could be played out into infinity. With the sun still shining, the music was firmly on the boogie end of the spectrum with an equally playful rendition of the harmonica-heavy, aptly titled âBoogieman Sam.â But as day turned into night with a red sun setting into Manhattanâs hazy skies, the set turned toward the sextetâs heavier jams of the brown-acid variety.Â
First came the stellar four-song string of Gizzy mind-palace classics, âIâm in Your Mind,â âIâm Not in Your Mind,â âCellophaneâ and âI'm in Your Mind Fuzz.â âGod is real. God is a black hole,â announced someone from the stage as they kicked off the speed-metal âSelf-Immolate,â complete with an extended, slow-burning drum solo from the inimitable Michael Cavanagh. The tune itself immolated amongst a barraging backdrop of animated, burning flames. Their songs off 2019âs Infest the Ratsâ Nest remain the high-water mark for intensity and rocking the fuck out, and it was a bold and impressive feat to tear through that material at the midpoint of a three-hour set, leaving it with their human drummer still intact.Â
âGila Monsterâ was another fan favorite, off last yearâs sprawlingly titled PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation. The fans enthusiastically intoning, âGila, Gila, Gilaâ felt powerful enough to summon some kind of monster from somewhere in the city, assisted by vocal effects and chants that couldâve rattled out from the depths of a didgeridoo.Â
The band welcomed a fan named Gabby to sing a vocal intro to âNuclear Fusionâ that Ambrose Kenny-Smith dubbed âfucking haunting.â Just as impressive as their never-ending discography, King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard play wildly different sets each night, an audacious feat on its own but especially so when playing three-hour shows.
Somewhere along the way, Fridayâs set reached the all gas, no brakes mark and never let up, finishing with âRattlesnakeâ and âK.G.L.W.â Welcome to the city that never sleeps to the worldâs most prolific band. âDan Rickershauser | @D4nRicks

Julie Announces Debut Album 'my anti-aircraft friend' with New Single 'clairbourne practice'
Los Angeles band and art collective julie has announced their highly-anticipated debut album, *my anti-aircraft friend*, set for release on September 13th via Atlantic Records. To accompany this announcement, julie has unveiled the single "clairbourne practice," which is complemented by shadowy visuals directed by Lizzie Klien and the band itself. Discussing "clairbourne practice," julie explains, "Itâs about two voices clashing and conflicting, struggling to understand each other. The vocal layering in this track is perhaps the most androgynous on the album. It represents two people saying the same thing yet failing to hear each other. We aimed for the loud and quiet parts to be stark oppositesâsweet, then destructive, repeating the cycle." This summer, julie will be performing across North America, starting with a series of shows supporting Faye Webster in July, followed by a larger tour in August with Alex G. The band will also headline select dates on the West Coast, supported by hello mary and Dutch Interior. Tickets for all shows are available now. julie burst onto the scene in 2020 with their single "flutter," which has garnered millions of streams. However, the band's roots trace back to the late 2010s when vocalist and guitarist Keyan Pourzand, drummer Dillon Lee, and vocalist and bassist Alex Brady began playing local shows in Orange County. Relocating to Los Angeles in 2019 for design school, the trio began crafting the songs that would become their debut album. In 2021, they released the EP *pushing daisies*, featuring tracks like "skipping tiles" and "aprilâs-bloom," followed by the 2022 double single "pg.4 picture of three hedges" / "through your window." Check out âClairbourne Practiceâ below: *my anti-aircraft friend* represents a significant evolution for julie, showcasing a more confident and sonically cohesive band. After years of refining their sound, this album reflects their deep understanding of alternative music's history and their innovative approach to bending genre conventions. Each member of julie is a multidisciplinary artistâPourzand works in sculpture, Brady writes and paints, and Lee is also a painter and illustrator. This artistic synergy influences every aspect of their releases, from the music to the art and packaging, down to the instruments they play onstage. For listeners navigating the challenges of contemporary life, julie's music offers both a cathartic escape and a means of finding self-acceptance amidst uncertainty. It looks like a Place of Growth
Intercultural Competence at ICON Architecture Boston means embracing diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration, and navigating cultural nuances seamlessly. It's reflected in our daily interactions, where team members from varied backgrounds contribute to a rich tapestry of ideas, creating a vibrant and inclusive work environment. Today kicked off with shadowing a meeting led by our mentor, Joe, delving into project specifications and scheduling. The day took an exciting turn with a site visit to the Suffolk Downs Multifamily project by ICON Architecture. The emphasis on Awareness and Development factors was palpable, evident from the weekly update meeting that initiated the tour. The transparent communication and compliance throughout the project showcased a commitment to fairness and inclusivity, valuing every contribution.
From the initial rendering stages at the office desk to the construction site completion, witnessing the resolution of challenges with fair intervention and influence at each step was enlightening. Day 2 at ICON Architecture provided a deeper dive into the constructional stage, allowing us to connect with an architect who has been with the project since its inception, providing invaluable insights. Overall, it was a fantastic day of exploration and understanding of the intricacies of project dynamics.
