SAINT OF THE DAY (February 25)
Tumblr media
Walburga (also called Walpurga) was born around 710 in Wessex, England. She was the daughter of Richard the Pilgrim, one of the under-kings of the West Saxons.
When he was starting with his two sons on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he entrusted Walburga, then eleven years old, to the abbess Tatta of Wimborne.
Richard died at Lucca, Italy, en route to the Holy Land on pilgrimage.
Her education
Walburga advanced in learning and holiness. Scarcely a year after her arrival, Walburga received news of her father’s death at Lucca.
Her mother, Winna, was the sister of St. Boniface who went as a missionary to Germany.
She had two brothers, Willibald and Winnibald, who later joined their uncle Boniface as missionaries in Germany.
Her uncle a missionary in Germany
During this period, her uncle, St. Boniface, had begun preaching the gospel in Germany.
He saw that scattered efforts at preaching would exert only a passing influence, so he decided to bring the whole country under an organised system.
As he moved along preaching the gospel, he established monasteries which, like fortresses, would hold the conquered regions. From these watch-towers, the light of faith and learning would radiate far and near.
Women help in evangelisation
Boniface was the first missionary to call women to his aid.
In 748, in response to his appeal, Abbess Tetta of Wimbourne sent over Lioba and some other nuns help.
Later, Walburga joined them at a convent at Tauberbischofsheim, on the River Tauber, 30 kms south-west of Würzburg. Here, she spent two years and became skilled in medicine.
Willibald bishop of Eichstätt
One of Wallburga’s brothers, Willibald, had travelled to Jerusalem and the Middle East, then spent ten years as a monk at Monte Cassino from 730 to 740.
Pope St. Gregory II subsequently sent him to Germany to help his uncle St. Boniface, who ordained him a priest, and appointed him bishop of Eichstätt.
With her brother Winnibald
Walburga’s other brother, Winnibald, had met up with his uncle Boniface in Rome.
Boniface brought him to Germany, ordained him and gave him charge of churches near Erfurt.
When Willibald became bishop of Eichstätt, he asked Winnibald to set up a double monastery (like Wimborne) at Heidenheim (70 kilometers east of Stuttgart).
Winnibald, in turn, asked Walburga to come and be in charge of the nuns, while he was in charge of the monks.
When Winnibald died, Willibald appointed Walburga to be in charge of both nuns and monks.
Her death and influence
When Walburga died in 779, she was first buried at Heidenheim, but some time later, her body was transferred to Eichstätt beside the body of her brother.
From the rock around her tomb, an oil with medicinal qualities, called “Walburga’s oil," began to flow.
A community was later founded to care for St. Walburga’s grave and has continued down to today.
She is the patron saint of sailors, mariners, and farmers, and against hydrophobia, famine, coughs, rabies, plague, and storms.

Snippet Canis Major
Voldemort remembers the other Sirius. Also, a little glimpse at Orion/Walburga, because I never tire of this toxic couple.
(-)
Usually, it was Arcturus or Pollux that showed up when their children got in trouble. Cygnus, especially, was often in trouble, so Pollux’ face was the most familiar to the students.
In Voldemort’s sixth year at Hogwarts, Atticus Bulstrode, the Head Boy, invited Walburga to Hogsmeade, the last in a lengthy string of boys asking her out. Only this time, she accepted.
When he heard, Orion challenged him to a formal duel. Atticus laughed, rolled his eyes at his fourteen years old opponent.
“Quick!” He was shaken awake by Abraxas, in the middle of the night.“Orion is killing Bulstrode in the trophy room! You have to stop him!”
He reached them just in time, he disarmed Orion, and rushed Bulstrode to the Hospital Wing, where they found Dumbledore asking the Matron for a sleeping potion.
Atticus was lucky- Dumbledore was more often than not away from Hogwarts, chasing Grindelwald, rumour went, but he was there that night, apparently suffering with insomnia.
The professor kept Atticus alive until the Healers from St Mungo arrived and took the boy with them.
“It wasn’t me,” he said, hurriedly, stained in Bulstrode’s blood, lingering in the Hospital Wing. Dumbledore peered at him from under his half-moon glasses. Dumbledore always liked to blame everything on him. “I only brought him here after-”
“I know,” Dumbledore assured him.
The next morning Atticus’ father came thundering, his yells easily heard from where Voldemort was spying, near the Headmaster office.
He wondered if maybe this will be the time when a Black actually suffers consequences. After all, Bulstrode’s name was ancient, they were a rich, influential family, and surely, at least on account of that, Dippet would do something more than detention and points taken, which was the usual punishment for Blacks.
Only, this time it wasn't Arcturus that came to fix his son's issues.
It was the infamous Sirius Black. A tall man, with wide shoulders, long black hair hanging around his face, deep circle under his too intense eyes, mouth twisted in a snarl. Orion walked behind him, his gaze fixed on his older relative. Voldemort watched them, hidden by a pillar. Orion never seemed small; he carried himself with such arrogance and pride, his head held so high he seemed a foot taller than he was. Yet right then, Orion looked small, trailing after his grandfather, quietly, as Voldemort observed them disappear up the stairwell leading to the Headmaster's chambers.
They left Dippet’s office not even a quarter of an hour after they entered it.
As soon as they emerged from it, the gargoyles closing the door behind them, old Black slapped Orion, the noise echoing down the hallway.
“Next time you pull something like this, do it on a weekday, you fool! If I’m woken up again at this ungodly hour on your account on a Sunday, you will be very sorry for it.”
“Yes, Grandfather,” Orion answers, in that unfazed tone of his.
The old man narrows his eyes. “What was it about, anyway? How did he provoke your ire?”
A second worth of silence. “He tried stealing from me.”
Orion gets hit again, harder this time. The heavy family ring rips the skin at the corner of his left eye, and that pure blood of theirs makes an appearance.
“Then why does he still have hands?” the old man hisses, enraged. “If someone attempts to take what is yours, you cut off their hands, boy!”
He slaps Orion again, just as harshly.
“Yes, Grandfather.” Orion doesn't take his eyes off his grandfather, doesn't wipe away the blood running down his cheek, his hands held behind his back.
Sirius Blacks huffs in displeasure, before turning on his heels and marching down the hallway. “Weakling,” he mutters.
Nothing happened to Orion. Not even the usual detention. No points taken.
Sirius Black insisted it was a formal duel, that the challenge had been accepted, and it was all done honourably, Slughorn told Voldemort, when he called him into his office to give him the Head Boy badge, temporarily, until Atticus recovered and would be able to return to Hogwarts and his duties.
“When Armando reminded him duels are illegal at Hogwarts, formal or not, Mr Black said rules are just words on parchment; that he’s a wizard, and he follows laws of magic, not of men.” Slughorn sighs, rubs at his temples, and then he takes a caramel out of his newest bribe-sweets bag that Abraxas gave him. “He told Mr Bulstrode that if he wants justice, then he should challenge him to a duel, and solve it like wizards ought to. Of course, Mr Bulstrode has more than one brain cell, so he refused and let it go.” He sighs again, points a sugar coated finger at Tom. “This is why I always told you not to seek trouble with Blacks. We’re lucky he’s apparently taken to drinking lately, locked up in his Manor, that he lets Arcturus handle most of their affairs, who is much milder and reasonable. But, once in a while, he gets out and you do not wish to run afoul of him.”
No one in the common room talked of it; only Walburga complained she was looking forward to going to the newly opened teashop in Hogsmeade, and demanded to know what was Orion’s problem with Atticus.
“A Quidditch thing,” Orion told her, with a shrug. “Don’t worry, Waly. I’ll take you to Madam Puddifoot’s.”
“I don’t want to go with my baby cousin, don’t be ridiculous! Malfoy, you will take me!”
Abraxas backs away, slowly. “I can’t, Walburga. I’m busy, I have to study,” he says, hastily, when Orion glares at him from behind Walburga.
It was the only time mild-tempered, well behaved Orion did something so outrageous that his unhinged grandfather had to come and solve it, so it was the only time Voldemort saw the man.

@jegulus-microfic | march 25 eyeliner | words: 819
tw: child abuse, blood, mentions of violence in the past
James was going mad, and it was all Walburga’s doing.
It all started when Regulus finally got out of this horrible imitation of a home. The boy was barely past his sixteenth birthday at the time; when he fell out of the Potters' fireplace, Regulus looked even worse than Sirius did the night he ran away. The older brother has been beaten up badly but could manage to stand on his own; on the other hand, the night the younger brother got out, he was fighting for a breath like a man drowning; his whole face was swollen and covered in blood.
When Regulus appeared in their living room, only James and Sirius were home. At the sight of him, they both panicked to the point where they forgot how to think. All Sirius could do was turn Regulus onto his back and hold his head so the younger boy wouldn’t choke on his own blood while crying and begging anyone who would listen to keep his baby brother alive. At the same time, James was running around the house, looking for something—anything—to help his best friend’s brother.
Thankfully, Effie and Monty arrived only a few minutes after Regulus, and as soon as they processed what was happening, they took all three boys to St. Mungo’s.
Not even a week later, Regulus looked like nothing had ever happened to him. At first, all he did around the house was eat, sleep, and argue with Sirius, but as time passed, the arguments turned into talks and helping each other. James didn’t have to ask to know the Black Brothers were trying to fix their relationship; he saw it in the way Sirius talked about Reggie and how he started bringing the younger boy with them on nights out and letting him into his own world. The change was noticeable in Regulus, too; he opened up a little, spent time with James’ parents, and started trying out muggle stuff like records, Polaroid, or cigarettes. Maybe James didn’t know him well, but he understood that those little things were important both for Sirius and Regulus.
In the first half of August, when Regulus was at their house for a little over a month, James found him sitting on a bench in their backyard. He was reading ‘Crime and Punishment’ Effie gave him, while James’ own copy waited to be read under his arm.
“Do you like it?” the Gryffindor asked, taking a seat next to Regulus.
The boy raised his head slowly, evidently reading the last few words on that page. When their eyes met, James literally lost his mind. Not only that, he also lost his ability to hear, feel, and think—everything except for seeing—because right there in front of him sat the boy he always found beautiful, yet at that moment James couldn’t come up with anything as mesmerising as Regulus’ silvery eyes outlined with heavy black. This mix must’ve outshined the star Regulus was named after. James felt like he could fly just by looking into those eyes; he started thinking of a son-
“Potter? Are you quite alright?” A gentle hand on his shoulder pulled James out of his haze. He blinked once, twice, and a third time for good measure before he closed his mouth (When did I even open them?), swallowed thickly, and mumbled something unintelligible. It was Regulus’ time to blink. After a second, the boy burst out into a loud laugh. “Oh god, Potter, come on! It’s just a little bit of eyeliner; Sirius wears it all the time!” Reg kept laughing, still holding James’ shoulder.
“Yeah,” the older boy managed to spit out when the other started calming down. “But he doesn’t look half as good as you do.” Regulus froze, the grin on his face turning into a sheepish little smile, a pretty pink creeping up his pale cheeks. “Oh,” James started, wondering why he’d said that. “I—I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable; I’m so, so very sorry, I—"
“That’s alright, James. I’m-“ The younger boy cleared his throat and ran a hand through his hair nervously. “I’m glad you like it,” he finished, biting his lower lip and still smiling a bit.
James, whose smile was normally big and bright, smiled shyly at Regulus.
“Do you mind if I-?” he pointed at his book. The younger Black looked over at him and shook his head slightly.
“Not at all; we can discuss the story later, if you’d like?” It came out as a question more than a statement, so James nodded once and started reading from where he finished last night.
The silence surrounding them was comforting—just a little buzz of bugs flying around and wind rustling leaves on an apple tree a bit ahead of them. Surrounded by all of it and still slightly nervous from earlier, neither of them noticed the glances they were stealing at each other.

April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.” Thanks to this seasonal association, this full Moon came to be called the “Pink” Moon.
Other celebrations:
• Walpurgis Night - April 30th
Also known as: May Eve
The origins of the holiday date back to pagan celebrations of fertility rites & the coming of spring. After the Norse were Christianized, the pagan celebration became combined with the legend of St. Walburga, an English-born nun who lived at Heidenheim monastery in Germany & later became the abbess there. Saint Walpurga was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling "pest, rabies, & whooping cough as well as against witchcraft". Christians prayed to God through the intercession of Saint Walpurga in order to protect themselves from witchcraft, as Saint Walpurga was successful in converting the local populace to Christianity. Although it is likely that the date of her canonization is purely coincidental to the date of the pagan celebrations of spring, people were able to celebrate both events under church law without fear of reprisal.
Walpurgis Night is still a traditional holiday celebrated on April 30th in northern Europe & Scandinavia. In Sweden typical holiday activities include the singing of traditional spring folk songs & the lighting of bonfires. In Germany the holiday is celebrated by dressing in costumes, playing pranks on people & creating loud noises meant to keep evil at bay. Many people also hang blessed sprigs of foliage from houses & barns to ward off evil spirits, or they leave pieces of bread spread with butter & honey, called ankenschnitt, as offerings for phantom hounds.

Walpurgis Night. Hexennacht. April 30.
A Short History of the Night of the Witches The origins of the image of Walpurgis night being a witches’ sabbath are unclear. However, it is striking that it coincides with Beltane and maybe other pagan festivals in earlier time. Goethe presumed in one of his poems such an origin.
St. Walpurga For Christians, Walpurgisnacht is also known as the Feast of Saint Walpurga, that is celebrated from the evening of April 30 to the day of May 1st. Saint Walpurga or Walburga was the daughter of St. Richard the Saxon Pilgrim and sister of St. Willibald and St. Winibald. When her father went on a pilgrimage with her two brothers to the Holy Land, he left Walpurga, who was only 11 years old at the time, with the nuns of Wimborne Abbey, where she was educated and learnt how to write.
She traveled in an attempt to bring German pagans to the Christian faith and she also authored Winibald’s biography, which is why she is considered as one of the first female authors in Germany and England. Walpurga became a nun in Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm, the monastery founded by her brother Willibald, where she became the abbess after his death in 751. Walpurga herself died on February 25 on 777 or 779 and she was canonized by Pope Adrian II on May 1st, around 870, when her relics were transfered to Eichstätt, Germany.
St. Walpurga is prayed to for protection against witchcraft and it is believed that during the night of April 30, she is able to ward off spells, witches, and evil spirits. This belief may stem from the overlapping of her canonization with Hexennacht or the Night of the Witches, the celebration that has its origin in ancient fertility celebrations. Hexennacht is a Germanic tradition more prevalent in the 17th century, when witches and sorcerers gathered together celebrate.
To protect against their magic, the Western Christian Church appointed the night of April 30 to St. Walpurga’s Feast. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Walpurgisnacht was popularized and its witchy connotations were revived through the literature of the time, such as in Jacob Grimm’s work who wrote in 1833: “There is a mountain very high and bare… whereon it is given out that witches hold their dance on Walpurgis night”.
Goethe also dedicated a poem to the celebration called “Die erste Walpurgisnacht” (The First Walpurgis Night), which was set to music by Felix Mendelssohn and published as his Opus 60 in 1843. The poem contrasts sharply with the Walpurgisnacht described in his main work “Faust”. In his ballad, Goethe relates the superstitions around Walpurgis night to the usage of devil’s masks by pagan’s in order to exploit the superstitions of their Christian suppressors and to protect their identities.

Listen I am nothing if not a sucker for the red string of fate. Especially with the Marauders. Like especially Jegulus and Nobleflower.
Like imagine Jegulus. James and regulus running into each other so often James’ first year. And James feeling a tug on the string whenever Walburga is being Walburga. And regulus finding James on the quidditch pitch whenever James goes there to escape. James finding regulus in the astronomy tower. When regulus is forced to get the dark mark, James feels a sharp pull, and it hurts him to no end. Then one day, James feels the string get cut. and he knows.
But with Nobleflower, it’s different. Because Alice was still alive. The string never got cut. But one day, bellatrix was on a mission, and narcissa was at home with Draco. And she felt the line grow impossible taught. Then it went slack. But it wasn’t cut. When the news reached her, she apparated to St. Mungos. But there was nothing she could do but sit by the bed of the love of her life. Then during the battle of Hogwarts, 16 years later, she saw Bella fall. And then the string came back to life. She felt more joy, more love than she had in years.

I saw a picture on Pinterest, where Walburga punishes Sirius with spells and Regulus can’t do anything, but crying. So what if thirdborn!Reader stood right between Sirius and Walburga, shielding Sirius from their mother and doesn’t move away until Walburga stops? And I’m sure that Walburga wouldn’t hurt her beloved child, meanwhile Sirius and Regulus are worried, because they don’t know what to expect from their mother.
So, what do you think about it?
If Walburga had her senses about her than she wouldn’t intentionally hurt her precious beloved child by any means. But I could see Walburga being in a frenzied rage and blindly firing spells only to end up hitting the Reader a quite a few times. By the time Walburga realizes what’s happened the Reader has fallen unconscious to the floor in a crumpled mess. Sirius is desperately trying to wake them up or get some kind of reaction out of them to see if their okay but this would only enrage Walburga more. She completely and utterly blames Sirius for his sibling being hurt and unresponsive.
In her delusion she wholeheartedly puts him at fault for it causing Sirius to retaliate out of anger and throw his own blame at her for her actions. A massive fight would ensue with Walburga and Sirius shouting, hurling obscenities and deplorable things at each other while Regulus is knelt over his sibling trying to give them some form of aid. It takes Regulus screaming at the two for them to bring their attention back to the situation at hand, he would also yell for Kreacher to come and do something for the Reader.
I have no doubt that Walburga would keep the Reader from being taken to St. Mungo’s to be treated, that is unless the Reader was in dire need. She doesn’t want to come up with a story of why her child had been damn near basically tortured. She doesn’t want anyone to think it was her, nor does she want either Sirius or Regulus saying something to either get the Reader taken from her or have her admitted due to questions of her own sanity. She also doesn’t want Orion finding out about this incident whatsoever but if he were to Walburga would put everything on Sirius and how he had ‘attacked’ their beloved child.
Walburga would be completely adamant about taking on the Reader’s care to recovery, she wants to be by their side the whole entire time until they get better. Meanwhile, Sirius and Regulus want her no where near their sibling and have every intention of telling their father exactly what happened, that something needs to be done with their mother if she’s blindly attacking her precious bby. Regulus would also tell Kreacher to keep an eye on Walburga with the Reader. He would also have Kreacher tend to the Reader without his mother’s knowledge, ensuring that his younger sibling gets the care they really need.
Sirius knows he wasn’t at fault for what happened to his youngest sibling, he knows he didn’t do anything to them with his own hands but he can’t help but feel like he had a part in them getting hurt. He was powerless, useless, vulnerable to their mother’s wrath and he couldn’t do anything about it but his own baby sibling didn’t even think twice about steeping in between him and their mother to protect him. It should have been him protecting them, protecting Regulus. He shouldn’t have let the Reader get hurt but at the end of the day it was their mother who did this, not him.
Regulus is feeling his own shame and guilt over what happened. He couldn’t do anything for Sirius. He couldn’t do anything for the Reader. He just couldn’t do anything. He was stuck in his place, at first out of fear of taking Sirius’ place but then he was frozen in shock as he watched his youngest sibling be pelted with spell upon spell. He can’t even remember if he heard their scream or if they even screamed at all. Next thing he knew was that they were unresponsive on the ground and his mother and brother were arguing as if they completely forgot about their very wounded family member. This only brought out Regulus’ own desperation and panic for the situation as he screamed to get their attention and to get Kreacher’s help. Once he had time to process and collect himself enough he couldn’t believe that his mother had the audacity to blame Sirius for her own actions and even going as far as telling their father that too. It made Regulus’ blood boil, especially when his mother insisted on not taking the Reader to be tended to at St. Mungo’s and instead that she would take care of them.
This would only push Regulus and Sirius closer in their alliance and vow to keep the Reader safe from their mother all the more. They never thought Walburga would hurt the Reader either but they never considered that she would be so enveloped in her own wrath that she would continuously go after whatever was in her path, including her most beloved child. Given that Orion will find out one way or another, whether his sons tell him or he finds out on his own, he will be plotting his own plan to keep his family safe and well. Even if that includes not having Walburga in the picture anymore. He could tolerate a lot, he could turn a blind eye to quite a bit but hurting their youngest child was enough for him, among other things. This is just what broke it all for him and that he needs to take action now.

hello trying smth. a bit. different under the cut?
Druella
Bellatrix is born on Halloween. On October 31st 1951, she becomes the eldest daughter of Druella and Cygnus Black, and she doesn’t cry. She just peers up at Druella with wide-round eyes and a calm, unaffected disposition. It’s eerie. It’s haunting. That’s something that always worried Druella– the Halloween birth, Bellatrix’s refusal to come into the world kicking and screaming and fighting for air like a normal child would. Druella worries that Bellatrix is cursed, born on the day of skeletons, death, evil spirits, and darkness. She tried to hold out a few more hours, she begged the mediwitches at St. Mungo’s to delay the birth somehow through grunts of pain and the sweat forming on her brow. She attempted to not push through her contractions, but it was pointless.
“They say babies born on Halloween are immune to evil spirits,” the mediwitch whispers to Druella as Cygnus sleeps in a chair in the corner of the room, arms crossed and shoulders slumped. “The veil between the living and the dead is thinnest tonight. So she’ll probably have a strong connection with the spirit world. She might even be given the gift of second sight,” she adds sagely, attempting to calm Druella’s fears. “A blessing.”
Druella holds Bellatrix in her arms, she’s sleeping and swaddled in a soft blanket, a peaceful expression on her face, but Druella can’t escape the feeling of hesitant fear bubbling beneath the surface. A bomb waiting to explode. “She didn’t even cry,” she lets out an exhausted sigh.
The mediwitch gives her a soft smile. “It happens. Her heart rate is stable and she is breathing normally. She’s perfectly healthy.” The witch finishes cleaning up a few things around the room and removes her gloves. “Be sure to let me know if you need anything. Someone will be here to check on you shortly.” As she turns to leave, she pauses for a moment with her hand on the handle, debating something. Then, with a quick look back and a sharp breath she says, “It’s going to be okay.”
Druella wishes she could believe her.
Bellatrix grows a little every day. She’s healthy, she never cries, her bones aren’t weak, her limbs aren’t mangled, her cheeks are pink and fat and not sallow. She looks nothing like a cursed child, acts nothing like a cursed child, except for the small birthmark just below her left cheek. A bad witch’s mark.
Walburga and Orion come to the house to see the new baby. A cruel, satisfied smile overtakes Walburga’s features when she sees it’s a girl, confirming with her own eyes that the chance to have the next heir is still within her grasp, but Druella takes her own pleasure in Walburga’s still slender frame.
At least Bellatrix proves that Druella isn’t barren. She can have children, healthy children. She could provide an heir. It was only a matter of time. Walburga and Orion had been married nearly three years before Druella married Cygnus and yet their house remained empty.
Walburga always hated Druella. Hated that Druella and Cygnus got to live in 12 Grimmauld Place with the family heirlooms the libraries, the portraits, and the tapestry detailing their lineage. She always believed it should belong to her and Orion. Druella was a Rosier by birth. It was only right that true Blacks lived in Grimmauld. She had married Orion earlier. It was only right that she reside there. The next heir to the Black family name got to reside in Grimmauld. So it wasn't just a race to bare a male child, but also a claim to the family residence.
Because Druella can't help herself, she takes Walburga to the drawing room with the tapestry for tea and revels in the looks Walburga casts at the family tree.
Druella was barely healed from her first pregnancy when Cygnus demands that they try again. One child was only enough if it was a boy. She counts the cracks in the ceiling and does her best not to shout in pain in those early days after Bellatrix’s birth. She washes too many bloody sheets before anyone else can see them.
She tries to spend time in the nursery, but baby Bella, as the house elves had taken to calling her, hardly interests her. Cygnus never goes to the nursery to see Bellatrix, he couldn’t be bothered. Rather, he immerses himself in his work. Druella knows it is her job. It's her job to dress Bellatrix and feed her and bathe her and sing to her, but she leaves most of those tasks to the house elves.
Bellatrix feels like a stranger in her home. A thing rather than a person. Something haunted and hard to bond with, even if she looks just like a normal child. However, there was still a sense of pride, even if Bellatrix wasn’t a boy. Druella had given birth to a child. She could be a mother. She could do what was expected of her. She just needed a boy.
More days pass.
Druella busies herself with planning Christmas parties and elaborate dinners and pruning her winter garden of Christmas roses and Goose Grass. She attends charity meetings and plans galas for the Museum of Modernism and Moda. The mediwitches assure her that Bellatrix’s witch mark will fade as she grows older.
Days turn into months, and just after Bellatrix is ten months old, Druella finds herself pregnant once more. Cygnus’ once stormy mood had shifted to one of gentle ease. He comes home earlier, he speaks softer, and he scowls less. All of the ladies drop by to place their hands on Druella’s growing stomach, to offer their well wishes, to bring gifts.
This time, it was going to be a boy. Druella can feel it in her bones. All of the divination midwives say as much. She dreams about it.
“Of course, we’ll name him Sirius. Something strong and commanding. The brightest star in our sky,” Druella was saying over tea as Walburga pursed her lips tightly.
“I think that’s a wonderful choice,” Irma nods in approval. “Lots of Sirius’ in our family history. He’ll fit right in. Splendid.”
Druella catches Walburga’s eye and grins wickedly. This house is hers, this life is hers, the family favour is hers.
They decorate the nursery blue and paint constellations on the ceiling that glimmer in the dark. By the time April comes, Druella doesn’t even mind that it’s raining when she goes into labour. Torrential, thunderous skies and rolling black clouds. Another bad sign, but one she ignores happily.
Cygnus meets her at St. Mungos. He stands by her side and holds her clammy hand through the hours of painful birth. She hears the mediwitches buzz around her and whisper nervously as she screams in her potion-dulled pain. She worries about all the blood staining the sheets and feels her head heavy with Merlin knows what.
She struggles to keep her eyes open as hospital staff swarm around her and wheel her to another room with bright, artificial lights. She tries to listen to what they’re telling her, but their voices sound gargled and warped like they’re talking underwater. It’s too hard to keep her eyes open anymore. She lets herself drift off and she dreams of her son.
When she wakes, she’s in a new room. A quieter room. A mediwitch rushes in and places a swaddled baby in her arms. She talks in slow deliberate sentences.
Druella barely hears her.
Complications with the birth. Postpartum haemorrhage. Beautiful baby girl. So lucky.
Through chapped lips and a dry throat, she asks to see her husband.
The mediwitch informs her that he left shortly after the baby’s birth. She hands Druella some water.
Alone in a private room at St. Mungos, she decides to name the baby Andromeda. She holds the small infant to her chest, only hours old, and she weeps.
Cygnus barely looks at her. The days pass and Druella watches over the girls in the nursery and tiptoes around her husband as she tries to ignore the walls of the house closing in on her. She tells herself there is still time, though the doctors at St. Mungos disagree. They all tell her another pregnancy is risky. Fatal. Nearly impossibly in her state.
Druella doesn’t breathe a word of this to Cygnus or to anyone else. She shuts herself up in Grimmauld Place and avoids everyone’s prying eyes, their disappointed looks, and Walburga’s triumphant sneers.
As days turn into weeks that turn into months, Druella grows more and more desperate. She finds herself under the guise of heavy glamour charms, back in Knockturn Alley, begging the shopkeeper for more fertility potions. Pills that will ensure a male child. She swallows down glowing green vials of bitter liquid that smelled faintly of baby’s breath. She crushes up black beetle eyes and crunches into the red bulbs of Witch’s Ganglion with wild abandon on the smooth tiles of her bathroom floor, and she waits.
She leaves the family Christmas dinner early as she feels the familiar trickle of warm blood run down her leg. She stays in bed for days at a time. She leaves her two daughters to the house elf.
Her third pregnancy nearly kills her as all the doctors had promised. She tries to hide it from everyone as best as she can. Cygnus doesn’t bother showing up to the hospital with her.
On a cold and bleak day in early January, Druella gives birth to her third daughter. The chill from outside worms its way around her heart and solidifies in a sickly, icy, frost. Narcissa takes what little Druella had left with her that day and keeps it for herself.
Three daughters. Their little lives just beginning. Girls who will have hopes and dreams and ambitions. Druella feels all of hers dwindle as she hands her third child to the house elf once more. Their stories begin as hers ends. Druella thinks that it’s unfair, having girls. She married Cygnus to give him sons. Not to love him or to look after him in his old age. She was made to produce heirs. What use would she be to him now?
He’ll want to keep trying, even if it kills her. Without a boy in the family, Druella was better off dead to him anyway. She was plagued by awful visions of her own mother, shut up in a room all alone after the death of her brother. Too old to produce any more male heirs, her father left her mother to claw at the walls and floorboards of her bedroom. Allowed her to be shut out and ignored by every family member who was once so warm towards her. He locked her away in a dark, stale room somewhere for failing him, and acted as if she never existed.
She felt the frost seep in. Her daughters, her own children had damned her to the same fate. Even if they didn’t know it. How could she hold them and be happy? How could she wipe the tears from their face and act as if everything was fine?
She’d like to swim in the ocean, or work at the ministry, or travel the world by herself. She’d like to go out at night and not worry about a home she’s obligated to come back to. She closes her eyes and lets herself dream these dreams for a while until Narcissa’s shrill cries wake her up and she feels her fate close in on her all at once.

C.O.B information series
Tumblr media
Cassiopeia Ophelia Black was born May 28, 1960 (six months after Sirius was born)
She was born premature in St. Mungo's and almost died until the healers saved her life, but she had to be held at St.Mungos for a month for further examination
Ever since she was a baby, she has always had strange dreams. It wasn't until she was 4 years old that she understood she had the ability of foresight, but she almost never understood her visions or had complete control over when they happened.
As soon as she could speak and walk, her mother taught her everything she could, from proper manners and etiquette to every type of magic their family library contained
From a young age, she was always known as the most beautiful of all the Black women in her family, even her cousins (some people theorized she was part Veela, but thanks to her hair, that theory was long forgotten)
Cassiopeia has a photographic memory and is extremely intelligent
Sirius, Cassiopeia, and Regulus were very close as children, like attached to the hip close.
Cassiopeia plays violin, piano, and harp
When Sirius would tease Regulus, Cassie would often scold him and defend Regulus
Before Sirius left for Hogwarts, Cassie gave him and Regulus charm jewelry for the three of them that she made herself with the help of her uncle Adolphus and magic (of course)
Sirius and Regulus had a bracelet, and Cassiopeia had a necklace (the charms were a dog for Sirius, a star for Regulus and a crown for Cassiopeia)
When they wear their bracelets and necklace, they feel a warmth and close to one another no matter how far away they are physically
Cassiopeia never understood why muggle and half-blood witches were hated so much by her family and most of the pureblood society (she never spoke out loud about it, tho)
Out of all her cousins, she had more of a close relationship with Narcissa. Cassie was scared of Bellatrix and found Andromeda to be an enigma. But Cassie loves all three of her cousins nonetheless.
Narcissa and Cassiopeia talk about fashion, makeup, gossip (both in their families and at hogwarts), and what's happening in their lives
She's a daddy's girl
Whenever Cassiopeia would read, draw, or just wanted a conversation. She would be welcomed in her father's office sometimes, and they just sit in their chairs either in comfortable silence, playing a game of wizards chess, or having a simple conversation.
Cassiopeia loves having tea parties. She would often have them with her mother, her cousins, or Kreacher
Before Hogwarts, she practiced a lot of wandless magic in the privacy of her room
She is extremely observant
Cassie never understood womanhood and why they kept grooming themselves or acted the way they did until years later
Ever since Cassiopeia was born, her parents have received thousands of letters requesting her future betrothal to the sons of the sacred 28 pureblood families, but they hid the letters and delayed their answer (Orion's request) until both Orion and Walburga decided that their only daughter was old enough to understand
As soon as her family were alerted that Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor, they immediately started preparing Cassie and Regulus to take on Sirius's duties just in case things went downhill (which it did)
The House of Black is the center of attention in politics. So every member of their family have to keep appearances to the public and the daily prophet
Cassiopeia loves spending time with her uncle Adolphus, but she is terrified of her uncle Cygnus and Aunt Druella. Same feeling with her mother.
Out of her two brothers, she was closer with Sirius, but after Hogwarts, they drifted apart. So Cassie and Regulus grew closer together and protected each other (more Cassie protecting Regulus)
She doesn't treat Kreacher poorly. She actually sees him as part of the family despite his attitude and treats him with great respect and kindness (when her mother's not paying attention)
When Sirius returned from Hogwarts, Cassie already knew Sirius was drifting away, but she tried to ignore it and pretend her brother wasn't changing and not pulling away from her and her family.

P.S. I Still Wait for You
Tumblr media
Every time I think of you I always catch my breath And I'm still standing here And you're miles away And I'm wondering why you left And there's a storm that's raging Through my frozen heart tonight I hear your name in certain circles And it always makes me smile
I spend my time Thinking about you And it's almost driving me wild And that's my heart that's breaking Down this long distance line tonight
I ain't missing you at all Since you've been gone away I ain't missing you No matter What my friends say
Missing You by John Waite (1984)
 @jilychallenge @jilychallenge2023
@sosohh My partner in fic: just about made it in unfinished 🤣🤣
Prompt:
Words we should never have left unsaid and/or PS I still wait for you
He still doesn’t know why she left. She never explained. Worse than that, she never said goodbye. He can’t even remember what she was wearing the last time he saw her. He hadn’t spoken to her for a few days, she had been busy with her new job, he’d been busy with his. They’d just won the war. A miracle. He was trying out for a place on the English Quidditch team, she had just been accepted onto the Healers Training Scheme in St Mungo’s. They had been together for two years, sharing a flat. He had never felt happier. Sirius had just done the preliminary exam for the School of Law – and been accepted, much to Walburga’s horror, if the Howler had been anything to go by. Remus had turned down his offer to finance him through an apprenticeship or to buy him a bookshop to manage, and instead had gotten himself a precarious job in a second-hand bookshop. Typical Moony. Peter had started a shit job in the Ministry of Magical Transport and promptly started looking for another one, rightly so.
It was a time of potential, excitement, euphoria. Voldemort was dead. And then she had disappeared.
She was fine. Marlene and Dorcas had been in touch with her. Relocated to Canada. Montreal. He didn’t even think she could speak French. He didn’t know what she was doing there. She had cut herself off from the wix world completely.
He isn’t missing her at all, since she’s been gone, it’s been nearly three years. He’s fine. He gets up every day, showers, apparates to Puddlemere United grounds in Dorset, and trains himself into the ground. Meets up with his mates regularly. Eyerolls at the obliviousness of two of them – dancing around each other, saying nothing. The evenings are the worst.
He spends too much time thinking about her. He needs to stop. She’s fine, he’s fine, they are all fine. He still has a tiny passport sized picture of them in his muggle wallet, taken at a funfair in a photo booth. He is grinning like an idiot, glasses askew. She has her head thrown back, mouth wide open, eyes shining. It’s in black and white and doesn’t move. He pretends he’s forgotten. But it’s still there, behind the pound notes he hardly ever uses. Like his heart. Still stuck in 1981.
He hears her name in certain circles – acquaintances from the class of ‘78. Despite everything, despite himself, hearing her name always makes him smile. He’s transported back to his school days. The incessant banter, the witty comebacks, the arguments over the tiniest things – excuses to talk to each other. Both smitten. Both madly in love. Or so he had thought. So had they all.
But they had been wrong.
“Lily Evans – do you hear much from her?”
“Do you guys keep in touch?”
“What’s she at these days?”
He pretends it doesn’t hurt, each time.
“We lost touch,” he says, making it sound so relaxed, so trivial, so grown up and disinterested.
He tried dating other people since she left. For two years. It wasn’t fair on them and it wasn’t fair on him. Now he doesn’t bother. He just needs to get his arse into gear and meet the right person. Or perhaps he still waits for her - an irrelevant, outdated postscript. He hasn’t tried contacting her. He isn’t a weirdo. He respects her decision. He just thinks if he knew what he did wrong it would somehow make it all more bearable.
 ***
Remus and Sirius finally get together. He moved out, hoping that might move things along. He’s right. When it finally happens it’s domestic, uncomplicated. They talk late into the night one evening, over a bottle of red wine. Sirius has been hinting for years that he loves Remus, but the oblivious arse is too thick to notice it. And yet, he is the one to make the first move.
There’s no turning back. They get together in September – warm sunshine, hazy languid warmth hanging on to the glorious ebbing of summer. By October they are engaged. November and it’s done nothing but rain for weeks on end and they are planning a wedding. He and Peter are best men.
The date of the Wedding is December 21st, Winter Solstice. She had left on December 22nd, 1981. He isn’t missing her at all.
“She’s coming,” Sirius tells him, sticking his chin out, ready for a fight; but his eyes are guarded, like he’s concerned, protective.
“What?”
“We invited her.”
He knows who she is.
“Why?”
“Remus wanted her to be here. I wanted her to come. She was one of our best friends.”
He doesn’t answer, clenches his jaw and fidgets with the mug of tea in his hands. He can’t veto his best friends’ wedding guests. But he wants to. So badly. He clears his throat, stares at the grain of wood on the table, says nothing.
Sirius waits. He doesn’t feel anything. Except perhaps frozen.
“Alright,” he says eventually.
His voice sounds gravelly, scratchy, like someone else is talking. Sirius stands behind him, places a hand on his shoulder, squeezes it tight.
“Thank you,” he says.
Like he understands how big a thing this is.
He has four weeks to get used to it.
He doesn’t.

Chapter One Excerpt:
“Good luck,” Bill said as he squeezed her shoulder before taking a step back to stand next to Andromeda.
Hermione gave the two of them a curt nod of her head as she checked to make certain that her wand was holstered on her forearm and the long, thin chain of the time turner was secure around her neck.
“T–Thank you,” Hermione said, struggling to find the right words. “For everything.”
Bill grinned at her, his scars pulled tight on his face. His eyes were pained, sad. “Don’t thank us just yet, Hermione. We aren’t even certain this will work. It’s just that–”
“It’s our only hope, our only option,” Hermione murmured, “for Harry.”
“For everyone,” Andromeda corrected as she peered around the drawing room of Grimmauld Place. “Remember what we went over?”
Nodding, Hermione repeated what she, Bill, Narcissa and Andromeda had gone over the last few weeks. “In order to save Harry, in order to save the wizarding world, we must save the House of Black.”
Andromeda frowned as she began to recall a specific time, decades earlier. “On the night of the fifteenth of July, 1976, Sirius was tortured by Walburga and Orion. He was facing almost certain death when he fled Grimmauld Place. Euphemia and Fleamont Potter brought him to St. Mungo’s after he’d arrived on their doorstep.” She paused for a moment. “I was working the front desk at St. Mungo’s that night. I saw him arrive via emergency floo-travel. It was bad, Hermione. The healers couldn’t even touch him until the effects of the Cruciatus Curse wore off. You need to prevent that from happening. That was the start of the end of my House.”
Hermione gave the older witch a sad smile. “And nothing can prevent that better than having a Muggle-born appear in the drawing room of Grimmauld Place, hollering at the top of her lungs about the destruction and eventual extinction of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black.”
“It’ll certainly get their attention, if nothing else. We know that there’s no way they’d listen to you unless they’re forced to,” Bill muttered dryly as he checked the time on his watch before grabbing his wand. “You need to go now, Hermione. Me and Andy need to leave. At any moment, Harry’ll know we’re here if he doesn’t already. We can’t risk it any longer.”
Hermione gave him a curt nod and fiddled with the time turner in her hands. “Be safe. Be strong. Be good.”
“Always.”
Hermione double-checked that the device was set to the appropriate date, exactly twenty-one years earlier. Her eyes met both Bill’s and Andromeda’s once again. “Goodbye.”
