The views from Valaskjálf
Tuesday – photo by Mitch Waxman Continuing with what I saw during a recent double decker tourist bus excursion in Pittsburgh, in todays post. As mentioned yesterday, the bus I was riding on had a preordained route which it rides through, one which is designed to hit several areas of interest in the metro area. It crossed the Allegheny River, heading south, and then towards the convention…

Visits to the Blessed Sacrament
1. After the many plans and worries of the day, it is wonderful to visit a church in the evening and kneel before the Blessed Sacrament. There we can adore Jesus and converse lovingly with Him. We have spent so many hours surrounded by the noise of the world. It is restful now to spend a quarter of an hour in silent prayer before Jesus, the prisoner of love in the Tabernacle. It is He Who invites us. “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Mt. 11:28) There are so many matters worrying us. We need some words of advice which will clear our doubts and strengthen us in suffering. We need words of encouragement to banish our sadness and enliven our faith. We need words of love which will light in our hearts the flame of love for God. We can find all this on our knees before the Tabernacle. Do not end the day without seeking a renewal of Christian strength at the feet of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
2. Let us consider the infinite goodness of Jesus. He became man for us, and spent thirty-three years on earth, “doing good and healing all.” (Acts 10:38) More than this, He chose to remain with us until the end of time, hidden in the Blessed Sacrament, to be our friend and comforter and the food of our souls. In His infinite power and goodness, is there anything more He could have done for us? All day He waits there, anxious to heal our ills, to console us in our troubles, and to give us the strength to persevere in our journey towards perfection and towards Heaven. Let us listen to that loving voice. Do not be ungrateful for this miracle of infinite goodness. Let us go to Jesus as often as we can, especially in the evening when our day is nearly over. We shall find Him a true friend Who is always ready to listen; better still, He is a friend Who is able and willing to help us.
3. “Taste and see how good the Lord is: happy the man who takes refuge in him.” (Psalm 33:9) Many people, unfortunately, place their trust in men and in worldly things. They soon see the mistake they have made and are disillusioned and embittered. It was not so with the Saints. They spent long hours by day and night praying to Jesus in the Blessed Eucharist, and carried away with them reserves of spiritual strength and tranquility. When they could not visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, many of them would go to some place where they could see a church and remain there in adoration. Whenever duty made it impossible for St. Stanislaus Kostka to remain before the Tabernacle, He asked his Angel Guardian to adore Jesus for him. If we were on fire with love for God, as the Saints were, we should do the same.—Antonio Cardinal Bacci, Meditations for Each Day, 1959.

St. Stanislaus Kostka R. C. Church
Monday – photo by Mitch Waxman That’s the… what do you Goyem call it… altar? The stage? I don’t know, but it’s the centerpiece and point of focus at Pittsburgh’s St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church. My grandmother would have referred to the statuary depicting the crucified Christ rising above a scale model of Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican simply as “Yuyzel on da cruss.”…

This is a distant view of St. Stan's on Lanza Ave. in Garfield. It was my mother's parish when she grew up. One of the most vivid memories of my own childhood was watching her and her sisters in traditional dress, joyously dancing polkas at the Polish festivals in the parking lot of this church. Mom turns 90 tomorrow. #NJchurcheverysunday ⛪️ (at St Stanislaus Kostka) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYy7kAXLeWW/?utm_medium=tumblr

TODAY IN SJ HISTORY
13 NOV 1987
Pope John Paul II prayed at the tomb of St. Stanislaus Kostka, SJ saying that as a student at the Belgian College, nearly every day he came to pray to St. Stanislaus.
The St. Stanislaus Kostka Church is the most significant Church of Zoliborz, a district of Warsaw. It is located on Hozjusz Street 2 near Plac Wilsona. The parish was created in 1927 in the area on the northern outskirts of city which was the site of significant development during the interbellum and in 1930 construction work started on the monumental NE Romanesque Church building, it was interrupted by World War II, and was finished in 1963. The Church is the well-known Sanctuary of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko, who was the spiritual leader of Solidarnosc and was killed by the Communists in 1984. From 1980 he conducted very popular Masses for the Fatherland that became a kind of manifesto for the social movement and protesters, attracting people from all around Poland. This is also the place of his burial and his tomb is situated beside the Church. The site was visited by the Pope John Paul II in 1987. An estimated 20 crore people from over 100 countries have visited.

Saint of the Day – 19 October – Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko (1947-1984) Priest and Martyr, Worker for Social Justice – born on 14 September 1947 in Okopy, Podlaskie, Poland, was kidnapped on 19 October 1984 by the Sluzba Bezpieczenstwa (Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs), the Communist Polish secret police and beaten to death from 19 to 20 October 1984 near Wloclawek, Pomorskie, Poland.   Patronage – Solidarity.
Tumblr media
Fr Jerzy was born on 14 September 1947 in Okopy near Suchowola.   After finishing school, he attended the priests’ seminary at Warsaw.   He served his army duties in a special force, aimed to keep young men from becoming priests.   This treatment had no effect on Popiełuszko, as, after finishing his army service, he continued his studies.   As a young priest he served in parishes in Warsaw, which consisted of the common people as well as students.   In 1981, Jerzy Popiełuszko joined the workers, taking part in strikes in the Warsaw Steelworks.   Thereafter, he was associated with workers and trade unionists from the Solidarity movement who opposed the Communist regime in Poland.

He was a staunch anti-communist and in his sermons, interwove spiritual exhortations with political messages, criticising the Communist system and motivating people to protest. During the period of martial law the Catholic Church was the only force that could voice protest comparatively openly, with the regular celebration of Mass presenting opportunities for public gatherings in churches.
Tumblr media
Popiełuszko’s sermons were routinely broadcast by Radio Free Europe, and thus became famous throughout Poland for their uncompromising stance against the regime.   The swecret police tried to silence or intimidate him.   When those techniques did not work, they fabricated evidence against him, he was arrested in 1983 but soon released on intervention of the clergy and pardoned by an amnesty.
Tumblr media
A car accident was set up to kill Jerzy Popiełuszko on 13 October 1984 but he evaded it. The alternative plan was to kidnap him, it was carried out on 19 October 1984.   The priest was beaten to death by three Security Police officers – Captain Grzegorz Piotrowski, Leszek Pękala, and Waldemar Chmielewski.   They pretended to have problems with their car and flagged down Fr Jerzy’s car for help.   They proceeded to attack him – he was severely beaten – to death, tied up and put in the trunk of the car.  The officers bound a stone to his feet and dropped him into the Vistula Water Reservoir near Włocławek from where his body was recovered on 30 October 1984.
Tumblr media
Blessed Jerzy’s almost unrecognisable battered body
News of the political murder caused an uproar throughout Poland and the murderers and one of their superiors, Colonel Adam Pietruszka, were convicted of the crime.   More than 250,000 people, including Lech Wałęsa, attended his funeral on 3 November 1984. Despite the murder and its repercussions, the Communist regime remained in power until 1989.  Fr Jerzy’s murderers – Captain Grzegorz Piotrowski, Leszek Pękala, Waldemar Chmielewski and Colonel Adam Pietruszka, responsible for giving the order to kill – were jailed but released later as part of an amnesty.
Popiełuszko was posthumously awarded the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest decoration, in 2009.   After death, he was buried in St Stanislaus Kostka Church, Warsaw where millions of visitors had paid tribute at his tomb.

He was Beatified by Archbishop Angelo Amato as the representative of Pope Bernedict XVI on 6 June 2010 in Warsaw’s Piłsudski Square.   His mother, Marianna Popiełuszko was present at the event.   More than 1 000,000 people attended the open-air mass in the Polish capital Warsaw to beatify Father Jerzy Popieluszko.   Poland Post issued a set of stamps on that same day to mark the beatification.

In October 2013, Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz – the Archbishop of Warsaw, the diocese where Popiełuszko was killed – announced that a miracle attributed to the intercession of the Polish priest has been identified and confirmed in France.   Thus Cardinal Nycz predicts that Popiełuszko will likely be canonised soon based on the credibility of the case presented.   A miracle was investigated in a diocesan process in France and the results of that investigation turned over to the Vatican for assessment.
At his funeral, an estimated one million people surrounded his church in Warsaw and as one, they promised to continue his struggle for freedom through non-violence thus living his motto “overcome evil with good” and we know that they won!
“Rest in peace, Father Jerzy.   Solidarity is alive because you gave your life for it.”
Lech Wałęsa
