St. Stanislaus Kostka In The Strip
The Historic St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish: A Polish Heritage Gem in Pittsburgh St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, a historic church located in the bustling Strip District of Pittsburgh, stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant Polish heritage. Boasting a blend of Romanesque, Baroque, and Byzantine influences, this ‘Polish Cathedral’ style church is an iconic landmark that has stood the test of…

The views from Valaskjálf
Tuesday – photo by Mitch Waxman Continuing with what I saw during a recent double decker tourist bus excursion in Pittsburgh, in todays post. As mentioned yesterday, the bus I was riding on had a preordained route which it rides through, one which is designed to hit several areas of interest in the metro area. It crossed the Allegheny River, heading south, and then towards the convention…

This was a concept painting for a fantasy Catholic Church that would be the site of a class change system in an rpg video game based on my historic fantasy project. The larger than life statues on the alter represent 5 class archichetypes: St Cyprian the patron saint of Magic representing magicians, St Joan of Arc patron saint of war representing warriors, St Christopher patron saint of travel and athletics representing good monsters, St Peter the first Pope representing Thuamaturges, and St Sebastian patron saint of Archery representing marksman. There is also a small shrine to St Micheal the archangel to represent those who seek to dabble in the Occult. The player of the supposed game would come to this church to reassign their characters skills, ultimately change the characters class, like going from a thumaturge Priest to a marksman Commando or a warrior Pugilist to a magical Green Magician. I based the church on the real life St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Pittsburgh PA located in the historic Strip District. It is a very traditional style church built in a cathedral style with gorgeous imported European stain glass windows that deserve to be included in art history text books. I loved the dark yet soothing atmosphere of the church, lit only by candle light and tinted sunlight. It's like walking into another world of Divine mystery. It was exactly the feel I wanted in my painted world so I almost copied the church verbatim, having to change little to change the historic St Stanislaus into a magical twilight realm of hope and possibility If you are in Pittsburgh I highly suggest you check out St Stanislaus, it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. https://www.instagram.com/p/CE9zXvZjjci/?igshid=18jqevmhse8nc

St. Stanislaus Kostka R. C. Church
Monday – photo by Mitch Waxman That’s the… what do you Goyem call it… altar? The stage? I don’t know, but it’s the centerpiece and point of focus at Pittsburgh’s St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church. My grandmother would have referred to the statuary depicting the crucified Christ rising above a scale model of Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican simply as “Yuyzel on da cruss.”…

St. Patrick R.C. Church
Tuesday – photo by Mitch Waxman A few blocks away from St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, which Our Lady of the Pentacle and myself got to visit on a walking tour of Pittsburgh’s Strip District offered by the ‘Doors Open Pittsburgh’ organization, is another church called St. Patrick’s. It has an interesting history, one which is detailed at this site. I was struck, while our guide…

perceptible resemblance
Thursday – photo by Mitch Waxman It was my pal Max’s first time in Pittsburgh, so we took a grandiose walk around a downtown area known as the “Golden Triangle,” after crossing the Monongahela River on the South Tenth Street Bridge. We walked crosstown to the Allegheny River and then over a bridge or two to the North Side. That’s the Fort Duquesne Bridge pictured above. We wandered about for…
