Auguste Neel, the only man to be guillotined in North America.
Truly one of a kind, murderer Auguste Neel occupies a singular place in criminal history. The islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, though sited close to the Canadian territory of Newfoundland, remain a French colony to this day. While Canada hanged its civilian criminals and shot its soldiers for capital crimes, France used its dreaded guillotine even if it had to import one for the occasion. For…

"MUTINY CHARGE LIKELY AGAINST KROMHOUT CREW," Hamilton Spectator. December 8, 1933. Page 7. ---- Arrests at St. Pierre International Matter ---- Application to France for Extradition ---- Ottawa Now in Police Kidnapping Picture ---- Ottawa, Dec. 8. (CP) - With the arrival of the rum-runner Kromhout at St. Pierre, and arrest of its crew, the sensational case involving the kidnapping of four Canadian coast guardsmen becomes one of international significance.
Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the departments of justice and external affairs were to-day considering the next steps in a drama which must now, in all probability involve the exchange of communications between the Canadian government and the government of France.
'It looks like a straight case of extradition," an official of the department of external affairs said today when informed of the arrest of the Kromhout's master and crew at the French island.
Extradition would involve the transmission of a request by the government of Canada to the government of France through the Canadian minister in Paris that the men be returned to Canada. While steps along this line have not yet been taken, it seems probable that action will come without delay
Mutiny Likely Charge At R.C.M.P. headquarters it was stated to-day the department of justice would be consulted before a decision was reached as to the next step. The Kromhout, it was explained, was in charge of a prize crew, and consequently the question of mutiny was involved. A special international law applicable to mutiny is in existence, and this may be invoked in the present case. Departmental wheels were turning as information came through that the four coast guardsmen were safe and that their captors had been arrested. It is probable that further action will be taken shortly.

Beak Full of Breakfast
This is a detailed shot of a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) who was around yesterday. The jay is gathering peanuts, you can see two here, one in its mouth and one held in the end of its beak. The jay looks lit it recently went through a molt and its head feathers are growing back.
"The oldest known wild, banded Blue Jay was at least 26 years, 11 months old when it was found dead after being caught in fishing gear. It had been banded in the Newfoundland/Labrador/St. Pierre et Miquelon area in 1989 and was found there in 2016."

airsLLide No. 21558: F-OHPX, Airbus A310-325, Air Calin, Sydney, May 7, 2002.
Air Calin is the Nouméa-based carrier of Nouvelle Calédonie (New Caledonia), a French group of islands in the South Pacific. Politically speaking, the islands are part of France, enjoying a unique status called collectivité d'outre mer (COM) in the French Constitution.
Eager for a geopolitical tangent of oddities? OK, here we go: Other than the French overseas territories in the Caribbean (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane) and the Indian Ocean (La Réunion, Mayotte), the islands of Nouvelle Calédonie are not among the five so-called overseas departments of France (départements d'outre-mer, DOM in short) that share the same political status as the departments of the French mainland. The main difference to those is that the seven French COM territories St. Pierre et Miquelon (off the Canadian Eastcoast), St. Barth and St. Martin (in the Carribean), Wallis-et-Futuna, French Polynesia/Tahiti and Nouvelle Calédonie (in the South Pacific), as well as the French territories of Antarctica including the outlying islands St. Paul, Kerguelen and the Crozet archipelago), and the uninhabited island of Clipperton (off the Mexican coast) are neither part of the European Union nor of the Schengen area - although they belong to the territory of EU and Schengen member France...
But similar to the five "departments abroad", the status of Nouvelle Calédonie as a French COM is reflected by the registration worn by Air Calin's sole Airbus A310, acquired second-hand from Swiss leisure carrier BalairCTA: Any aircraft belonging to an airline in one of the five overseas departments of France, or in one of the seven colléctivités d'outre mer, receive a specific 'French-Overseas'-tailnumber, beginning with the letters F-O... by default. Or, in other words, if you ever come along an aircraft with an F-Oxxx tailnumber, you can be sure it belongs to one of these exotic places...

Coming to CBC in winter 2025, Saint-Pierre stars Jobert, alongside James Purefoy and Allan Hawco. What’s Saint-Pierre about? It’s more than a little like a Canadian version of Death In…

"HALTING TO FREE MEN CAPTORS ARE TRAPPED BY ST. PIERRE POLICE," Toronto Star. December 8, 1933. Page 23. --- French Authorities Waiting on Rocky Shore as Boat Pulls In ---- NOW HELD IN JAIL ---- Halifax, Dec. 8. Four Canadian coastguardsmen carried away yesterday aboard the rum-running vessel Kromhout are safe at St. Pierre.
While every available craft of Canada's preventive service combed the Atlantic for the four captives, they were landed on the rocky little island off Newfoundland's coast at nine o'clock last night.
Captain Ross Mason and the crew of the Kromhout were arrested immediately and held in jail at St. Pierre.
The motor vessel was seized yesterday morning by the patrol boat Stumble Inn after a long chase in which the government ship fired several times on the suspected rum-runner.
Four men of the Stumble Inn's crew were placed aboard the seized vessel as a prize crew, and they were carried away when the towline linking the ships was cut, and the Kromhout escaped in the morning mist.
Chief Officer Milton Mackenzie of North Sydney was in command of the prize crew; under him were Second Engineer James McIntosh of Sydney Mines and Able Seamen Raymond Oxford and Murdock McDonald of North Sydney.
Search for the speedy craft carrying the four captives began immediately. The wireless carried a warning to all ships to be on the watch for the Kromhout; and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who administer the customs preventive service, concentrated their ships in the waters about Cape Breton.
From the North Sydney base the Stalwart and Tenarity steamed seaward. The Bay Hound sped from Charlottetown to join them. And the Stumble Inn - officially patrol boat No. 4 - took on provisions and fuel hurriedly at North Sydney and put to sea for St. Pierre, where the Kromhout was believed to have taken on her cargo of 1,500 kegs of liquor.
It was while the Stumble Inn was driving hard for the little French island that the Kromhout slipped into shore under cover of darkness to land her prisoners. Advised to be on the watch, authorities there immediately arrested the Kromhaut's crew and lodged them in jail.
Now International Problem Ottawa, Dec. 8. - With the arrival of the rum-runner Kromhout at St. Pierre, and arrest of its crew, the sensational case involving the kidnapping of four Canadian coast guardsmen becomes one of international significance.
Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the departments of justice and external affairs were to-day considering the next steps in a drama which must now, in all probability, involve the exchange of communications between the Canadian government and the government of France.
"It looks like a straight case of extradition," an official of the department of external affairs said to-day when informed of the arrest.
Extradition would involve the transmission of a request by Canada to the government of France through the Canadian minister that the men be returned. While steps along this line have not yet been taken, it seems probable action will come without delay.
At R.C.M.P. headquarters it was stated to-day the department of justice would be consulted as to the next step. The Kromhout, it was explained, was in charge of a prize crew, and consequently the question of mutiny was involved. A special international law applicable to mutiny is in existence, and this may be invoked.
Departmental wheels were turning and it is probable action will be taken shortly.

Blue Jay
Here is a photo of a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) that I took in October 2023. I haven't seen any of these birds in a few weeks, I know that they are still around though. Perhaps they are deeper in the forest. My guess I'll see them more when it starts getting really cold, especially it snows. Yes, it occasionally snows in Louisiana.
"The oldest known wild, banded Blue Jay was at least 26 years, 11 months old when it was found dead after being caught in fishing gear. It had been banded in the Newfoundland/Labrador/St. Pierre et Miquelon area in 1989 and was found there in 2016." - allaboutbirds.org

Saturday, August 29 - St Pierre, France
Well, the weather forecasters were unfortunately right, and our string of beautiful shore days was broken. The fog horn sounded through the night, and the only time the fog lifted was when the rain poured down. Even so, we spent the entire day in the small, but cute port of St Pierre, the largest town in the territory of France called St Pierre et Miquelon (the other main island). We were greeted by cheerful volunteers handing out maps and small French tricolor flags (plastic -a good thing considering the conditions). Once again we were sharing the port with the Holland America ship, but we were both anchored out beyond the breakwater and had tenders. Theirs took them to the main square, ours to a small dock near the lighthouse and a row of sheds (mostly shuttered) where many zigotos and dories were winched up onto the shores. The former are large dories with a sail - more on them later.
We were also greeted by this little duo in one of the sheds. This was the museum for the zigotos and dories, and had models, plans, memorabilia, etc., all in a tiny space. A couple doors down was the only other open shed - it appeared to be a clubhouse of sorts for the organization of zigoto folks, and they had a little sign at the front advertising t-shirts, hats, etc. so we went in, and had a lovely chat, winding up with a couple of shirts. Later, in town, we saw the workshop where they actually repair and restore the boats.
The harbor for St Pierre is protected mostly from the east by a low barrier island that still has a few buildings, but has mostly been abandoned. Our plan had been to take the ferry out there, but with the wind over 40 mph, and sideways rain, we decided to stay on the main island. In addition to the island, the harbor is protected by a couple of breakwaters, but it was a little bumpy at the start of the tender ride. The lighthouse is actually inside the breakwater.
These islands are extremely close physically to Newfoundland and Labrador, but were originally settled by French cod fishers, and although they have been under British control at least 5 times since 1713, they have been permanently controlled by the French since 1816. There is also a heavy Basque influence and an annual Basque fest. We think it was supposed to be this weekend, including today, but when we walked past, everything was shuttered because of the weather. Because of their location, these islands were widely used for smuggling alcohol into the US during Prohibition, and Al Capone had a base of operations here. There is still a lot of fishing here, although more modern boats are used rather than the traditional zigotos and dories.
There are a few commercial streets in town, as well as the waterfront, but most of the town is not geared to tourists, and many shops close up for an extended lunch, or close on Friday afternoons, when we were there. We walked the main streets and then walked south to a small lake, then up through residential areas to a higher lake with a little tumbling stream - still with houses on one side. By this time it was raining fairly heavily, but we had on our rain gear and decided to hike up a trail along the creek to a "belvedere" (overlook). The views would have been spectacular if we could have seen through the rain. Our original plan B (plan A had been the island) was to take some of the trails through the surrounding hills to the "seven lakes", but that seemed a little ridiculous, since the cloud level was just above us. Instead, we meandered through town, found the tourist information center, bought a couple of Basque style berets, and did some more wandering. Despite having our ponchos over our rain gear, we were pretty much soaked by this time.
We finally headed back to our tender dock, but when we passed by the zigotos association building a party seemed to be happening, since there was a long table with chairs, lots of food and wine, and about 20 members. We were invited in, and given lots of yummy homemade cakes, since we were now old friends. We talked at length with one of the group about current fishing trends, zigoto repairs and maintenance, and a little more about life on these islands. Then we had to spend some time in the little museum learning more. At least both spaces were dry.
We finally made it back to the ship, probably spending more time ashore than anyone else. We hung up all our wet clothes (pretty much all our clothes that we wore) in the bathroom, showered, and enjoyed a sail away out into the fog, with the sound of the fog horn a constant reminder of the weather.
We now have two sea days to dry out and get ready for a blitz of stops up and down the Saint Lawrence. Our next stop will be in Sangueney, a conglomeration of several villages up a fjord off of the St Lawrence. We'll be back in Canada, but will still be needing to figure out French. C'est la vie.
