love this album so much!! i've been obsessed with the folklore of st sasha about as long as i can remember, it's endlessly fascinating. the whole motif of the forest that never existed haunts me to this day, and i think "the girl who painted death" might be one of my all-time favourite fairy tales. as for the elephant in the room... personally, i'm of the camp that david brownley was killed by a shark that was anomalously far north, but then that doesn't explain how he was found so far inland, and those papers... if only they hadn't been burned, maybe we might have some better insights into what really happened </3 anyway, you've done an amazing job bringing st sasha lore it to light for a wider audience! weird that it isn't already more popular. aight, i'm gonna go rewatch goncharov for the thousandth time.

okay but can we talk about sasha?? her initial comments to barbie were harsh but she wasn't completely wrong. earlier in her conception barbie being attractive, smart, capable, and bursting with joy for life was empowering.

like lady starfleet officers wearing mini dresses in star trek tos, it was a direct challenge to the limits society put on womxn at the time. but just like those dresses the social impact of barbie being all the things all the time became toxic to the very people it was trying to uplift.

the unrealistic thinness. the increasingly overwhelming expectation that we're supposed to not just want but be able to Do It All. living up to the barbie standard became really harmful.

this film allowed sasha to not only say that but to be the catalyst of change in barbie. barbie didn't change life for womxn all over. worse, for many the idea of barbie became a cage of unrealistic expectations they were left chasing with no real hope of ever catching up.

this film never made sasha apologize or be humbled. the growth she experienced was more about learning to see her mom as a fully realized person and allowing herself to enjoy the silly, and i love that for her!!!
