who's family would be the most interesting to watch if they were on reality tv?
alright , here are my top three contenders: the yoons , the grimaldis , and the sinclairs .
THE YOONS ( @dearpaige , @teagvns , @wcrstbehaviior , @drearieds ): i think theirs is the most intriguing . three kids and the mom just up and leaves for paris after paige ? no divorce . just living her life in europe while the father is here operating his plastic and reconstructive surgery clinic . coupled with the fact that paige looks nothing like teagan or cameron . not to mention , eight is always tense around the father . i sense a very interesting story ( but let me be the first to break it and the reality show can follow )
THE GRIMALDIS ( @delicatlueur , @concertaes ): okay maybe not the entire family but definitely one centered around julien and percy . i think it would be entertaining to watch one of our resident bottle blondes live it up like paris hilton in 2003 . and for percy ? she's not in monaco for a reason , right ? there's gotta be something behind it .
THE SINCLAIRS ( @rubyxsinclair , @natesinclairs ): who says golden sibling + resented sibling won't make for great television ? i'd personally like to see it . ruby isn't as squeaky clean as everyone thinks . and nathaniel ? well surely he'll get tired of being overshadowed by his sister's scandals .

* ꗃ unlocked . . . THE YOON FAMILY !
TASK 002: AMERICAN ROYALTY . the yoon family has only come to wealth within the recent generation . with elijah yoon making his fortune as a doctor in plastic and reconstructive surgery , the younger yoons have been provided countless opportunities due to this newly acquired wealth . and despite the wealth this family has amassed , they are no stranger to scandal . whispers about elijah yoon’s more dubious medical practices exist . rumored of course . and then there’s genevieve dupont's sudden departure to france just years after paige's birth . no explanation . no divorce . just two individuals living separate lives despite still being legally married . and while this might’ve been a quiet scandal among the upper east side social circle , nepoupdates has caught wind and publicized it .
family members include: elijah yoon , genevieve dupont , peter “eight” yoon ( eldest son ) , teagan yoon ( eldest daughter ) , paige yoon ( youngest daughter , HALF-siblings to teagan & eight ) .
@nepofminspo , @dearpaige , @drearieds
OOC NOTES.
this task specifically dives into the dynamics between teagan and her family in order to provide the reader with ooc information beyond what’s known in-character . the in-character vanity fair article is a positive profile on the yoon family and their rise within the upper east side social scene . it doesn’t touch upon any of the more scandalous rumors about the yoons and mainly focuses on their successes within their respective fields of work .
DYNAMICS .
teagan & elijah. let’s confirm one thing . teagan absolutely despises her father . it wasn’t always this way . but that’s how it is now . for the first five years of her life , she was definitely daddy’s little girl . elijah actually paid attention to her . but the arrival of her younger sister resulted in a sudden shift in their dynamic . teagan no longer associates her father with the loving and attentive man he once was . their relationship over the years have been fraught with tension . with elijah focusing his attention on paige , teagan did her best to earn her father’s approval . maybe she’ll finally get an ounce of attention . however , the need for approval turns to resentment and everything teagan did was in spite of her father . she knows she’s not the favorite . and knows better than to rely on him to actually show up much less hold a conversation that doesn’t involve comparing herself to paige . as sad as it is , she’s convinced that her father doesn’t love her . he looks at her as if she’s a stranger . like she isn’t his first-born daughter .
teagan & genevieve. between her mother and father , teagan very much prefers her mother . where her father lacks , her mother makes up for it . while paige is elijah’s favorite , teagan is genevieve’s . and it’s not exactly by choice . when the parent you live with wants nothing to do with you , you turn to the parent who does . despite living in france , genevieve is still involved in every aspect of teagan’s life . and maybe it’s the favoritism that blinds her to the way her mother treats paige as if she’s distant family . but she likes the attention . likes that her mother supports her . she’ll take any opportunity to spend more time with her mother . although in recent years , it’s become challenging due to her schedule . but teagan won’t shy away from crediting her mother for fueling and supporting her ambitions .
teagan & eight. they playfully bicker . they’re unafraid to voice their opinions to one another . and he’s probably one of the few people that can get away with calling out her dysfunctional relationship with her and paige . teagan fully trusts eight and wouldn’t hesitate to go to him for advice ( and yes , she expects the side of sass first before he spews anything helpful ) . teagan views eight as an equal . someone who can actively deal with their crazy family and knows how much of a HEADACHE their father can be . and understands why herself and paige act the way they do when it comes to dealing with their parents . she won’t hesitate to be he shoulder he can lean on should he need it .
teagan & paige. they’re five years apart in age and their relationship is … complicated . with paige being favored by her father and teagan being favored by her mother , the two have been pit against each other for as long as they can remember . paige sees her in direct competition with her older sister . it’s sad . while they’re family , paige and teagan are more akin to strangers than they are sisters . moments when they do in fact act like a family are far and few . and when it happens , both refuse to acknowledge that such a moment was shared . teagan isn’t blind to paige’s hostility and part of her knows that her younger sister won’t have her back . the two are very different . and it’s obvious . with teagan’s more standoffish demeanor and paige’s loud personality , it’s no surprise which of the two yoon sisters people prefer to spend their time with . she knows paige is the more preferred relative even amongst extended family . and as of late , teagan finds herself wanting to repair this relationship . she wants to be an older sister to paige . and while she’s never voiced it , she does support her younger sister . unfortunately , part of her also believes it might be too late due to years of shared animosity .

location: lure fishbar partipants: cameron yoon & paige yoon ( @paigeisms )
"and how was the gala?" cameron asked with a smile as he leaned over the table, "i hope you enjoyed yourself." his own gala invitation had sat unopened in the mail tray before eventually making its way to the recycling. he'd attended more than enough to know it wasn't his scene, but that didn't mean he didn't want to hear about it.

alex landi. he/they. male. ›spotted at the met steps , peter “eight" yoon , most likely listening to i hate it by again&again with their airpods pro . the twenty - eight year old gained quite a reputation , known to be -argumentative & critical yet +loyal & intelligent to anyone who knows them . you'll easily spot them when you hear about eight never letting others refer to him by his first name or last name , the smell of cigarettes that cling to his cable knit , cream sweater , or him working nights so late he leaves later than his father , followed by peach tea & vanilla ice cream . latest nepoupdates article talks about latest gossipabout your muse eight storming out of his father's clinic , screaming , ’ you tell her or i will! ’ , but i guess any reputation is good reputation .

found some pics of paige when she was younger, and man, she looks nothing like teagan and cameron
i feel like we already knew that , didn't we ? wasn't that why miss paige was so HELLBENT on hiding any and all pictures of herself from prying eyes ? let's not forget she was overheard talking to teagan about hiring extra security to guard those photos . you'd think that those photographs are worth more than diamonds but maybe they are . the paige we know now could've looked VERY different . after all , the yoon father makes a living off changing appearances ... thea laughs , eyes sparkling with amusement . “ oh , gem , i totally get it ! i mean , who wouldn’t swap out city traffic and annoying paparazzi for some sweet beach action , like , in a heartbeat ? st . lucia sounds like a dream , but coming back to reality , that’s the hard part , right ? i mean , sure , crashing in your own bed again is sweet and all , but you’ve gotta be missing those tropical cocktails and killer sunsets . plus , jetlag ? it’s like the universe’s way of saying , ‘ welcome back , now struggle ’ . and speaking of struggle , when are you going to drop by my show for an interview ? we can play a few rounds of spill your guts or fill your guts , you know ? it’ll be the perfect chance for me to sneak in some juicy questions about what really happened between you and paige yoon . ” // @gemmajcmes
open starter ( @nepofmstarters )
"I'm like a migrating bird when it starts getting colder. Catch me hopping on a flight to a sunny beach destination." Gemma stated with a chuckle. "St. Lucia is amazing, one of my favorite places. I'm missing it already even though I just got back after a few weeks of relaxing in paradise." She had yet to even fully unpack her bags since she'd returned to the city. "But I definitely missed my bed and the jetlag is so real."

kim jisoo. she/her. cis woman. ›spotted at the met steps , solji lim , most likely listening to low by sza with their airpods pro . the twenty eight year old gained quite a reputation , known to be -hedonistic yet +bewitching to anyone who knows them . you’ll easily spot them when you hear about expertly hailing a cab with the wave of a perfectly manicured hand , the gentle crinkling of tissue paper as nostrils take in the scent of honey sweet snapdragons , the upturn of glossed petals as the dominoes fall in her favor , and perfectly coordinated outfits only to attend her morning pilates class , followed by electric cherry by tom ford . latest nepoupdates article talks about solji lim fuels romance rumors with mysterious billionaire after being spotted on romantic parisian getaway , but i guess any reputation is good reputation .
adeline rudolph. she/her. cis woman. ›spotted at the met steps , teagan yoon , most likely listening to oh no! by marina with their airpods pro . the twenty-six gained quite a reputation , known to be -acerbic yet +sharp-witted to anyone who knows them . you’ll easily spot them when you hear about crisp morning air , the constant need for something more , using running as a workout and an escape , followed by their chloé naturelle by chloé . their latest nepoupdates cameo talks about a diva ? teagan seen walking off set and refused to return unless demands are met , but i guess any reputation is good reputation . ** fulfilling paige yoon’s older sister wc & josie seong’s co-stars wc

sage is certain that, like him, harlowe actually knows there's a so - called ' right way ' to hold a teacup ( although he's unsure if they were forced into etiquette classes as a kid or somehow managed to dodge it like he did ), but he shrugs. "if you don't know if there's a right way to hold a teacup, then what makes you think that keeping my pinky up while i hold mine would be seen as ' prim and proper ' ? " he arches a brow, but finds it difficult to pretend that his inquiry is serious. he doesn't care about tea parties, or what's considered proper at tea parties — but, he doesn't mind tea itself, and harlowe is sort of funny, enough to put a half - smirk on his face. "so what you're saying is that i'm less rebellious than a bunch of old ladies ? 'cause this ... " liquid sloshes over the lip of his cup as he brandishes it at harlowe. it slops onto the table, and probably onto his pants. he doesn't really care. " ... just tea." sage almost tips his head back and groans when they manage to bring up a topic he does care about. sort of. indirectly. "at least they decided to skip the live orchestra playing covers of shitty pop songs," he offers, "the list of things that would ruin a good time faster than being forced to listen to a violin cover of an xavier kent song only has one thing on it, and it's being forced to listen to a violin cover of a paige yoon song."
laughter bubbles up at his comment . “ is there even a right way to hold up a tea cup ? ” technically yes but harlowe doesn’t care about the etiquette of that . it’s not like they’re meeting the royal family or whatever . “ y’know what , i think you need to keep your pinky up . that’ll really show that you’re prim and proper . ” they’ll joke . truthfully , they just don’t care if they’re going to be the topic of conversation . harlowe’s managed to keep their private life exactly what it is . private . so they’ll let others continue to speculate . at sage’s admission , they can’t help but shoot their friend a sympathetic smile . “ then it’s clear that their lives are VERY shallow . ” they place the teacup down on the saucer with a loud clink . “ like you said , aesthetics . ” they chuckle . “ but i have a feeling most people aren’t here for the tea anyways . i’m pretty sure more than half the old ladies here have spike their tea with some gin . ” or sipping on gin straight . “ i will say this event does feel very . . . bridgerton . ”

applicants , thank you so much for taking the time to apply to tempushq. we were so happy to have received the outpouring of love and support that we did and every single decision that we made was difficult – however , we think we chose the best cast of characters to start our group . to those who weren’t accepted , please feel free to reach out off – anonymous for feedback on your application and the admins will do our best to provide you with some .
to all of the accepted applicants below , congratulations ! please check your tumblr messages from the blog that you applied on – your link to join the main server will be in there . if you did not submit via tumblr or the link doesn’t work , message us with your discord handle instead . as a reminder , once you join the discord server , you have forty – eight hours to post a character introduction .
congratulations , niki ! you have been accepted as remus lupin with the fc of conan gray .
we had some stiff competition for remus but we all appreciated the characterization and nuance that you provided him with . not only were the song choices good but you also really captured remus’ essence ! we appreciated the literary parallels as well as learning about remus’ vices.
congratulations , ali ! you have been accepted as ginny weasley with the fc of go yoon jung .
out of all of the competitions , the competition for ginny was the stiffest . still , your app was our favorite . we really appreciated the detail that went into her pinterest as well as the information that you provided . we can’t wait to write with you !
congratulations , ashlie ! you have been accepted as neville longbottom with the fc of reece king .
we enjoyed your neville app immensely – especially how you delved into his upbringing destroying his confidence . it was absolutely lovely to see his development ! we enjoyed your writing a lot and we can’t wait for the opportunity to see your neville in action .
congratulations , glenna ! you have been accepted as theodore nott with the fc of cristiano palmerini .
your theo app was lovely and it was really close to the canon theo that we know and love ! we really enjoyed that theo is into photography – as that is an interest that we haven’t seen before in our different rps . the arts and crafts club headcanon ? that was very sweet as well !
congratulations , elle ! you have been accepted as andromeda black with the fc of margaret qualley .
we were completely blown away by your andromeda app and your characterization . the agency and the decisions that she made that were separate from her relationships was amazing – additionally , the app didn’t buy into most of the typical andromeda stereotypes that happens . we can’t wait to see what your andromeda brings to tempushq .
congratulations , caboose ! you have been accepted as arthur weasley with the fc of tbd .
this was easily one of our favorite apps . your characterization of arthur from the beginning of his life until now was so engaging and easy to read . we also really enjoyed the parallels to hilda spellman that you drew , overall an absolutely wonderful read !
congratulations , dread ! you have been accepted as fred weasley with the fc of cameron monaghan .
one of our favorite twins ! we really appreciated how you were so careful to fit fred into our version of canon – from having to repeat his seventh year to being into engineering – and the idea that he might be casually cruel at times . we’re so excited to interact with you !
congratulations , paige ! you have been accepted as bellatrix black with the fc of rainey qualley .
we were so glad to have received your application ! it was one of our favorite ones to read and we really felt as though it characterized bella well – our favorite part was the aesthetics . we also really loved the faceclaim matching that of andromeda , excellent choice ! we can’t wait to see bella in action .
congratulations , gray ! you have been accepted as regulus black with the fc of ian alexander .
thank you for your strong portrayal . seriously ! we really appreciated and adored your characterization of regulus after you re-submitted it . the nuance and the behavior was inline with canon and we can’t wait to see how you do them justice .
congratulations , manong ! you have been accepted as alastor moody with the fc of shayan shobhian .
manong , reading your app was a pleasure ! we especially enjoyed how you changed up some of the cultural aspects of aurorship to fit in with your portrayal with moody as well as the other headcanons that you provided about their paranoia . we can’t wait to write with moody ! constant vigilance .
congratulations , caboose ! you have been accepted as nymphadora tonks with the fc of lachlan watson .
caboose , your second app was a fun + amazing read . we really appreciated your take on tonks ( and admin dani even learned about their middle name - which is somehow worse than nymphadora ) and we can’t wait to see him further explore their identity - plus , we can’t wait to write some amazing interactions with you .
congratulations , gray ! you have been accepted as gilderoy lockhart with the fc of chance perdomo .
the ACTUAL gilderoy lockhart . all three admins were blown away by your portrayal from the funny little notes that you added in to the nuances of his personality . picturing him on the debate team somehow makes perfect sense and the elliot waugh parallel made us fall in love with him even more . thank you for this wonderful app !
congratulations , facie ! you have been accepted as cho chang with the fc of angela yuen .
we had two amazing apps for cho but yours just tugged at our heartstrings more . we really appreciated how you went into cho’s background and kept the scottish headcanon that katie leung did to make the role her own . your cho is amazing and we can’t wait to see her finish out her seventh year at hogwarts .
congratulations , mandrs ! you have been accepted as george weasley with the fc of cameron monaghan .
popcorn in amortentia ? maybe george and i would get along pretty well ! all joking aside , we really enjoyed your app for george . you went into detail about aspects of his personality that we hadn’t yet considered - this is the other half of my favorite duo so i ( admin dani ) was super excited to read everything ! thank you for your brilliant app .
congratulations , kat ! you have been accepted as gideon prewett with the fc of elliot knight .
our other favorite set of twins ! we really enjoyed reading your gideon app , kat - from learning about gideon’s patronus to his boggart - everything sucked us in . plus , we really appreciated your explanation of his extracurriculars . we can’t wait to write with you !
congratulations , neve ! you have been accepted as mary mcdonald with the fc of kitty chicha .
the instant that we read that mary is the antithesis to pureblood culture - we knew that you were the mary for us . your characterization from start to finish was amazing and we can’t wait to see mary in action - kicking ass and taking names . ( plus , the jason todd parallel - marry me , mary ? )
congratulations , neve ! you have been accepted as zacharias smith with the fc of desire mia .
neve , this app was amazing as well . we had never considered the possibility of a hufflepuff being cruel and cunning and admin izzy would like to say that luna belongs in ravenclaw , thank you very much ! :P also , i ( admin dani ) am also terrified of bats . thank you for this lovely application - we can’t wait to write with you !
congratulations , sommer ! you have been accepted as fleur delacour with the fc of tingting_lai .
sommer , we really enjoyed your fleur app . we enjoyed learning about her upbringing and how she feels protective over gabrielle - the delacour sister dynamic is one of our favorites in canon . plus , your playlist for her was lovely - la vie en rose is such a quintessentially fleur song .
congratulations , summer ! you have been accepted as astoria greengrass with the fc of mai am nhac .
summer , your writing was like poetry . we enjoyed every single bit of it and every single aspect of your astoria portrayal . it was nice to learn more about astoria - who is tragically underdescribed and underportrayed in canon . plus , the annabeth chase parallel and the daphne bridgerton voice ? consider astoria the love of our lives !
congratulations , lina ! you have been accepted as severus snape with the fc of aria shahghasemi .
lina , severus snape is a character we rarely see played accurately in hp rps . and as such , it was a pleasure to reserve your wonderful and well - chracterized application . the addition of the playlist and the pinterest were the proverbial cherries on top of the cake ! we can’t wait to write with your snape , thank you so much for applying !
congratulations , nyx ! you have been accepted as lucius malfoy with the fc of cameron porras .
this was an interesting take on lucius that we had never seen before - especially the part where he believes in reincarnation so that he can come back next time and do it better himself . we think it perfectly captured the slight narcissistic edges of his personality and we can’t wait to see ( one ) of our favorite malfoys in action .
congratulations , almira ! you have been accepted as tracey davis with the fc of natasha liu bordizzo .
another slytherin to join the group ! as someone who likes leaf juice ( tea ) , i ( admin dani ) am slightly offended by the fact that tracey thinks it’s gross . however , we won’t hold it against her . we can’t wait to write with you and thank you for your lovely app !
congratulations , thia ! you have been accepted as marlene mckinnon with the fc of kim adis .
proud bisaya marlene mckinnon ! muggleborn marlene too ? this was a lovely app to read and i really enjoyed how you incorporated marlene’s background and mentioned her potential future . we can’t wait to write with you - thank you for this great app !

Black Lives Matter: A Reading List
On this blog, we believe Black Lives Matter. I’ve been quiet here because I’ve just been absorbing and listening and loud on other platforms. But I wanted to take the time and share some books by Black authors that may not be on your radar, books besides The Hate U Give and Dear Martin and Children of Blood and Bone (though I hope you’re reading those too, you’ve probably heard of them at this point). It also won’t just be books about Black pain because Black people have a huge range of experiences and they all deserve to be heard.
All the links in this post will go to Mahogany Books, a Black owned bookstore in Washington, D.C. that does ship. If I can’t find it on their website, the link will go to Semicolon Bookstore, another Black owned indie bookstore, this one located in Chicago’s, Bookshop page. Please note that many books are currently backordered because there’s a huge rush on books by Black authors (especially anti-racist books) right now and there was already a paper shortage and delays in printing because of COVID-19. If that’s the case, check your local library’s digital resources or check other bookstores since they all have varying stock.

What are some of your favourite books?
What a good question!
A GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO MURDER by Holly Jackson is one that I've read recently and honestly I could not put it down! It's a mystery thriller with an amazing cast of characters and a cool plot line. It's based around the disappearance/death of Andie Bell by her bf Sal Singh, but our mc Pippa is trying to prove that Sal didn't do it by working with his brother. Honestly 10/10.
THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF OKAY by Laura Stevens is also another amazing book. It tackles modern day feminism through the eyes of Izzy O'Neill when a leaked picture of her skyrockets. The story is told through a series of blog entries, and it provides a witty commentary to balance out the seriousness of the matter.
EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING by Nicola Yoon another all time favourite because I love Maddy so much! Nicola Yoon's writing is so beautiful, and though the story is a bit predictable at points, you're desperately rooting for Maddy and Olly all the way throughout (and yes it did make me cry a bit!)
ELEANOR AND PARK is a ya classic, by the fabulous @rainbowrowell. It perfectly captures the awkwardness and quirkiness of teenagers, and provides a fledgling first love romance the justice it deserves. The final line of the book has me in tears every time, and I always find myself in awe of the plot and characters no matter how many times I reread it!
ANGELFALL by Susan Ee is beautiful and one of the best trilogies I've ever read! I love love love this book, and I have few words to say that haven't already been said. Penryn is badass and funny and I love Raffe so much, and Paige, and the mom and oh my goddddd!
SHATTER ME by Tahereh Mafi is actually my favourite series of all time, I am so happy that I found it! I'm running out of words to describe each book but Juliette and Warner are the otp to end all otps!
TRIAL BY FIRE by Josephine Angelini is a book that I will rave about until I die because honestly, everything about it is *Italian kisses* Rowan and Lily have their ups and downs but I still love my babies
CINDER dear god read this series, it's by Marissa Meyer and if you love retellings of fairytales then this is the series for you!
THE LIE is my favourite book by C.L Taylor and with good reason because its one of her best works and it still has me on the edge of my seat even now.
KNIFE by R.J Anderson was the first 'proper' book I read and for that reason gives it an automatic mention on my list, that and because I love faeries.
MORE THAT I LOVE:
Carry on AND Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
It Only Happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne
HONORARY (obvious) MENTIONS:
Harry Potter by J.K Rowling
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
Thank you!
- KC

Books read in April
Holidays are an ideal time to find oneself with a pile of library books to read. The downside to having gone away with a pile of books is having too many books to write about afterwards.
I also reviewed the short stories I listened to: “Intro to Prom” and “Semiramis” by Genevieve Valentine, “The Shipmaker” by Aliette de Bodard and “When We Were Starless” by Simone Heller.
Favourite cover: Stand in the Sky!
Reread: Once again, didn’t get to the book I’d planned to reread.
Still reading: Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee.
Next up: Begin, End, Begin: A #LoveOzYa Anthology. A Thousand Sisters: The Heroic Airwomen of the Soviet Union in World War II by Elizabeth Wein. Maybe Ancestral Night by Elizabeth Bear.
(Longer reviews and ratings are on LibraryThing. And also Dreamwidth.)
Pride by Ibi Zoboi (narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo): Seventeen year old Zuri Benitez is proud of her family, her Haitian-Dominican heritage and the community of her Brooklyn neighbourhood. She’s unimpressed by changes like gentrification or the wealthy Darcy family moving in across the street. This contemporary YA remix twists the events of P&P fit Zuri’s context, allowing the story explore cultural identity, class and dealing with change, and for Zuri’s relationship with Darius makes sense for 21st century teenagers. It’s a cute teen romance but most powerful as a love-letter to Zuri’s hood. The audiobook brought it to life even more vividly.
Stand on the Sky by Erin Bow: Achingly beautiful. It kept making me tear up because while it’s only sometimes sad -- while this is a hopeful and joyous story -- it captures twelve year old Aisulu’s emotions so intensely. When her older brother is taken to hospital, Aisulu is left behind with their herds and relatives and throws herself into raising an eaglet. A fascinating insight into nomadic Kazakhs living in Mongolia and into the challenges and the rewards of eagle-hunting. I love the prose, sense of place and characters; I love Aisulu’s relationships and the way this is her story -- her journey.
Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser: Caro has grown up on the river with her father, a wherryman and a smuggler. She’s offered her first job in exchange for her father’s freedom -- to deliver a crate, unopened, to Valonikos. But when she opens the crate, its occupant has other ideas about their destination. This YA fantasy shines the strongest in the skills and knowledge Caro has about sailing and about river life. I enjoyed the rest, but some things happened a bit too quickly for me to feel invested.
Undying by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner: I wasn’t very enthusiastic about Unearthed but this sequel was a lot of fun to read. High-stakes and satisfying. There’s escaping and travelling across Europe incognito and trying to save the world. And it got to build upon what had previously been established, so there’s more nuance and it all felt more believable. After reading these authors’ other books, I was confident that everything would turn out okay. I’d have liked the ending more if the authors had surprised me and there had been a higher cost -- but this is a YA novel and teenage-me certainly wouldn’t have wanted that.
Cobalt Squadron by Elizabeth Wein (narrated by Kelly Marie Tran): I didn’t find The Last Jedi very satisfying but I’m a fan of Elizabeth Wein, so I listened to this story about a mission that Rose, her sister Paige and the rest of Cobalt Squadron are involved with. Knowing that the Tico sisters survive lessened the tension somewhat, but I liked getting to know them better. (I also know that Wein is capable of writing more complex and harrowing stories but that’s not what this one is aiming for.) The audiobook includes Star Wars music and sound effects. I’d love to see music and sound effects used in more audiobooks.
A Question of Holmes by Brittany Cavallaro: Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson are attending an Oxford summer program before they start university. Charlotte is asked to investigate a mystery involving the drama society. It’s a quieter mystery than the preceding ones but I am not going to complain about that. I’m happy to read about mysteries at Oxford! Towards the end Charlotte makes a decision which I thought needed to be foreshadowed better and then the epilogue rushed over some things, and I wasn’t totally satisfied. I also found Charlotte’s references to things like “fall”, even though she’s living back in the UK, jarring. Minor-ish quibbles?
The True Queen by Zen Cho: The companion to Sorcerer to the Crown. This took a while to hook me, but once the story got underway, I enjoyed guessing where it was all headed. It is a delightfully diverse Regency fantasy, with some satisfying twists. If I have any quibbles, it’s that I wanted a better resolution for something -- and maybe also just more of the ending? I don’t quite know... I didn’t spend much time analysing my reaction and it was now over half a dozen books ago.
Scorch Dragons by Amie Kaufman: In the sequel to Ice Wolves, 12 year old Anders and his twin sister find themselves on different sides of the conflict between wolves and dragons, but they work together with their friends to prevent a second war. The riddle-solving and questing for a hidden objects reminded me of Deltora Quest, which I enjoyed when I was Anders’ age. A very satisfying sort of adventure.
European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman by Theodora Goss (narrated by Kate Reading): In the sequel to The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter, Mary Jekyll and Justine Frankenstein set off for Europe to rescue Lucinda Van Helsing at the request of Mary’s former governess, Mina Murray, and receive help and hospitality from people like Irene Adler and Carmilla. I particularly enjoyed the Athena Club’s interjections and digressions in the narrative, and interactions with each other. They make a great team. Kate Reading does a great job with all the voices and accents, which made the story all the more engaging. Even at 1.5 speed (due to 20+ hours of audiobook to get through!) it was easy to keep track of who was speaking.
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie: I liked it! It’s engaging, intriguing and doing some surprisingly-similar things to Ancillary Justice (which I loved), such as: a first-person narrator who neither human nor omnipotent but has greater awareness and abilities; an interesting use of pronouns -- Eolo’s actions are described in the second-person; and a story about the past eventually collides with the story about the present. I completely missed that this is ALSO themes and variations on Hamlet. That might explain why I found the ending incredibly satisfying for the first-person narrator but I was expecting something more from -- for? -- Eolo.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black: I borrowed this because it has a delightful map by Kathleen Jennings, it’s a finalist for the Lodestar Award, and I liked the last book I read by Black. It’s an interesting exploration of what it means to love terrible things, with a clear-sighted awareness of their flaws, but I spent most of the story thinking “I hate faeries” and wishing Jude could escape them. Then the plot did its thing, and I had to admit that this is a successful piece of storytelling, if still not quite my thing.
The Austen Playbook by Lucy Parker: Parker’s fourth romance about actors from the West End -- in which Freddy accepts the role of Lydia Bennet in The Austen Playbook, a televised, audience-interactive murder mystery theatre production -- is a lot of fun. Having an interesting setting and plot outside of the romance definitely enhances my enjoyment of the story. This had Jane Austen and Harry Potter references, rehearsal tensions, important family relationships, a mystery involving a (fictional) play, banter, and a lively actress and a grumpy theatre critic who are honest with each other.
The Place on Dalhousie by Melina Marchetta: This is about Jimmy Hailler (from Saving Francesca), now in his mid 20s. But it is equally about Rosie, who meets Jimmy in a Queensland town during a flood, Rosie’s stepmother Martha and the house built by Seb, Rosie’s late-father. It’s a powerfully moving story about grief, friendship and finding family. It’s shorter than Marchetta’s more-recent novels and I finished it feeling oddly disappointed, like it needed to be longer. Then I reread the book the following day, and reconsidered. I’d like more, certainly, but it is a satisfying story as it is.
From Clarkesworld Magazine, narrated by Kate Baker:
“Intro to Prom” by Genevieve Valentine (Issue 133): About four teenagers for whom prom is like a game they play, a way to pass the time. It is intriguing but bleak.
“Semiramis” by Genevieve Valentine (Issue 57): This is Valentine-ishly bleak and yet satisfyingly so?
The worst thing about being a sleeper embedded somewhere long-term was that inevitably, eventually, you started to care. The worst thing about being embedded long-term as an administrator at the Svalbard Seed Vault was that when you inevitably started to care, you started to care about things like proper political geo-temperate arrangement of seeds, and there was just no one else in their right mind who was going to care about that with you.
“The Shipmaker” by Aliette de Bodard (Issue 124): Set in the same universe as The Tea Master and the Detective. It is intriguing but sad, and I wonder if I’d appreciate it more if I read more of de Bodard’s stories and understood the context better.
“When We Were Starless” by Simone Heller (Issue 145): This has been nominated for the Hugo for Best Novelette and I can see why! It’s a hopeful story about survival, questioning what society teaches and finding a way to a better future. There’s also an AI with feelings.
Once, I might have felt out of place, an unwelcome disturbance. But I had left my fear of ghosts behind like an old skin a long time ago, and what I had found instead was the unforeseen, and sometimes pure beauty.
