I understand why most rpgs use a 5 foot scale, its easier to count and determine square distance quickly. But you dont realize how fucking weird 5 foot scale feels until you play an rpg with a different one
Like, "a 30 foot by 30 foot room" being a basic minimum for letting players run around and stuff felt fine at first. Then I played Call of Cthulhu, which uses a yard based scale, three feet.
And it fixes so many maps
Even basic maps to decent scale in Pathfinder you end up with stuff like 5 foot wide doors, tables and chairs that look huge, Weirdly spacious rooms. You get used to the three foot scale you start realizing how much easier it is to make a normal feeling map
A thirty foot by five-sixish foot long hallway goes from 6 people people able to fit and needing to aqueeze by eachother to 20 people being able to fit squeezing by eachother, or ten people in a semi tense fit. It goes from "you need 20 squarefeet minimum room for 4 pcs to fit comfortably in a room" to "they are hiding in the walk in closet with no penalties"
One my favorite images is still the one of the person standing in a 5 foot square to show it off, because while it makes some sense in combat grids are also used out of combat. Especially if you use roll20 or foundary and like to do maps for rp, easier investigations, or just not make it obvious when a combat is happening, it feels funny.
Like imagine 4 heavily armored adventures standing in a decent sized ten by ten room, five feet apart like "pretty cramped in here, five feet apart because were not gay"
