Announcing the Picks and Shovels book tour
Tumblr media
This week only, Barnes and Noble is offering 25% off pre-orders of my forthcoming novel Picks and Shovels.
Tumblr media
My next novel, Picks and Shovels, is officially out in the US and Canada on Feb 17, and I'm about to leave on a 20+ city book-tour, which means there's a nonzero chance I'll be in a city near you between now and the end of the spring!
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865908/picksandshovels
Picks and Shovels is a standalone novel starring Martin Hench – my hard-charging, two-fisted, high-tech forensic accountant – in his very first adventure, in the early 1980s. It's a story about the Weird PC era, when no one was really certain what shape PCs should be, who should make them, who should buy them, and what they're for. It features a commercial war between two very different PC companies.
The first one, Fidelity Computing, is a predatory multi-level marketing faith scam, run by a Mormon bishop, a Catholic priest, and an orthodox rabbi. Fidelity recruits people to exploit members of their faith communities by selling them third-rate PCs that are designed as rip-off lock-ins, forcing you to buy special floppies for their drives, special paper for their printers, and to use software that is incompatible with everything else in the world.
The second PC company is Computing Freedom, a rebel alliance of three former Fidelity Computing sales-managers: an orthodox woman who's been rejected by her family after coming out as queer; a Mormon woman who's rejected the Church over its opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, and a nun who's quit her order to join the Liberation Theology movement in the struggle for human rights in America's dirty wars.
In the middle of it all is Martin Hench, coming of age in San Francisco during the PC bubble, going to Dead Kennedys shows, getting radicalized by ACT UP!, and falling in love – all while serving as CFO and consigliere to Computing Freedom, as a trade war turns into a shooting war, and they have to flee for their lives.
The book's had fantastic early reviews, with endorsements from computer historians like Steven Levy (Hackers), Claire Evans (Broad-Band), John Markoff (What the Doormouse Said) and Dan'l Lewin (CEO of the Computer History Museum). Stephen Fry raved that he "hugely enjoyed" the "note perfect," "superb" story.
And I'm about to leave on tour! I have nineteen confirmed dates, and two nearly confirmed dates, and there's more to come! I hope you'll consider joining me at one of these events. I've got a bunch of fantastic conversation partners joining me onstage and online, and the bookstores that are hosting me are some of my favorite indie booksellers in the world.

Top 5 Documents You Need for a Successful Canada Family Sponsorship Application
Starting your Canada family sponsorship journey requires meticulous preparation and attention to detail. A well-organized application package can significantly reduce processing times and increase your chances of approval. Let's explore the five most crucial document categories you'll need for success.
Tumblr media
1. Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking Form (IMM 1344)
This legally binding document confirms your commitment to financially support your family member(s) for the required period. It outlines your responsibilities as a sponsor and must be signed by both you (the sponsor) and the sponsored relative. Ensure all sections are completed accurately, as errors here could jeopardize your Canada family sponsorship application.
2. Proof of Relationship
Whether it’s a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or adoption papers, you must provide evidence of your relationship to the sponsored individual. For spousal sponsorships, include photos, joint bank statements, or communication records to demonstrate the genuineness of your relationship. Immigration officers scrutinize this closely to prevent fraud.
3. Financial Documents
As a sponsor, you must prove you meet the minimum income requirements to support your family member. Submit your Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the past three years, recent pay stubs, and employment letters. Self-employed individuals should include business records or tax filings.
4. Police Certificates and Clearances
Your sponsored family member must provide police certificates from every country they’ve lived in for six months or more since turning 18. This ensures they have no criminal history that could affect their admissibility to Canada.
5. Medical Examination Results
A designated panel physician must conduct a medical exam to confirm the sponsored person meets Canada’s health requirements. This includes testing for infectious diseases and ensuring they won’t pose excessive demand on healthcare services.
Create a master checklist of all required documents and their expiry dates. Submit clear, high-quality copies while keeping originals safe. Consider using tabs or dividers to organize different sections, making it easier for officers to review your application. You should take the help of licensed consultants for the best Canada family sponsorship application guidance.

Two masked men are in frame, wearing camouflage and sitting opposite each other. A table is between them and they are in the middle of what they claim is an American forest.
“You want to be as high up on the chain for modern warfare,” one of the men says under garbled voice distortion, while explaining the finer points of a fantasy insurgency against the US government.
The video, less than 20 minutes, is propaganda from the proscribed neo-Nazi terrorist group the Base.
“You want to have the best weaponry for war; to have the best tactics for war,” the man continues, “especially here in America.”
The video, meant to entice Americans to join its ranks, isn’t on YouTube or even a social media site most people know. Instead, it’s being hosted on Rutube, a Russian-government-sponsored knockoff.
Multiple analysts who follow its movements have noticed that the Base recently migrated much of its online content to Russian-owned sites or services. The move is part of an ongoing theme among the far right when western apps de-platform or moderate valuable accounts used for recruitment: retreat to the free-for-all that Russian sites offer.
The Base relocating its recruitment to safer Russian havens comes at a time when western intelligence services are openly warning that the Kremlin has taken the gloves off, directing their agents to sow chaos in the west. Part of that has included the covert support of far-right extremist groups adjacent to the Base.
Founded in 2018, the Base was the subject of a major nationwide FBI counterterrorism sweep netting more than a dozen of its members for a laundry list of terrorist activities across the US and Europe.
Ken McCallum, the head of MI5, the UK’s domestic intelligence service, publicly stated earlier this month that Russia was responsible for “arson, sabotage” and other “actions conducted with increasing recklessness” on European and British soil.
In a September announcement on SimpleX, a newly adopted encrypted chat service for some far-right extremists, the Base told its recruits to consume their content via its VK account, the Russian version of Facebook, or its Rutube channel.
And in a series of September and October VK posts where it describes the “process for joining the Base in [the] USA”, the group also curiously dropped a new email with a Mail.Ru address – the email provider of a well-known ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. The Base had previously operated a Proton Mail account (an email company based in Switzerland) as its point of contact.
With cells in Europe and elsewhere around the world, the Base has faced increasing law enforcement attention of late. There were September arrests of members in the Netherlands and it’s now a designated terrorist organization in the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and, most recently, the European Union.
“We have seen the Base’s operations move steadily eastward as they have come under law enforcement pressure in the west, which includes their recent listing as a terrorist organization by the European Union,” said Steven Rai, an analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) who monitors the far right at the extremist watchdog.
“It is likely that they view Russia as a friendly operating environment and one in which they can recruit Americans and other individuals without fear of disruption.”
One of its most suspicious features has always been the Base’s founder and leader Rinaldo Nazzaro, who is believed to be living in Russia with his wife and family.
Since Base’s inception, questions have surrounded Nazzaro’s potential alliance with Kremlin agencies as a quasi-defected American looking to disrupt US politics from afar. Suspicions were made all the more striking when it was revealed Nazzaro not only worked for the Department of Homeland Security, but was a Pentagon contractor serving in some of the most secretive sections of the US military.
Yet Nazzaro has lived unchecked in St Petersburg for years, once even telling a Russian state television program in a highly choreographed scene that he has “never had any contact with any Russian security services”.
Rai continued: “The Russian government has allowed the Base’s leader to maintain his international recruitment efforts without much consequence.”
But multiple western government sources in law enforcement and intelligence, who were not authorized to speak to the media, have confirmed that Nazzaro’s links to Russian spy services have long been a point of their interest. While the Department of Justice has yet to lay charges against Nazzaro, he is the subject of an FBI investigation and was once called a justice department “matter” by a US government official.
“Given that their leader has allegedly resided in Russia for several years while seemingly being able to continue his terrorist activities unfettered,” said Rai, “it is unsurprising that the group has opted to migrate their online presence to a variety of Russian platforms.”
The almost migratory patterns of online extremists has often had a Russian theme. Many terror groups swore off Telegram in September after its Russian founder was charged in France on multiple criminal counts and then agreed to work with authorities. Several then moved to SimpleX, which was founded and created by another Russian national.
“To me, the migration of neo-Nazi groups to SimpleX chat, followed by the latest wave to Russian platforms, likely results from their ongoing search for well-built, privacy-focused platforms for communication,” said Clara Broekaert, a research fellow at the Soufan Center, who focuses part of her work on foreign interference.
Broekaert noted that he faced continued scrutiny from the far right online, calling him a “fed” or informant, but pointed out that Nazzaro was also “open about his admiration for Putin”.
She explained the Base using Russian platforms “seems to be an effort as well to try and bypass US scrutiny, which would make sense in light of its increased activity as we approach the US election”.

you fundraised over $2,000 for muscular dystrophy research! you don’t know how much that means to me as someone with muscular dystrophy! I wanted to ask, how did you do it? I’d love to fundraise in my own community. Any tips on how to start?
Thank you so much!
I am a member of a fundraising team for my local chapter of the FSHD Society for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, the type of MD that I have. As far as I know, the FSHD Society only operates in the USA and Canada, but they have a list of some global FSHD groups here.
The FSHD Society does an annual fundraising event called the Walk and Roll to cure FSHD: this is the only major fundraiser specifically for FSHD in North America. This is the primary way that I've raised money in the past.
Anyone can participate, but the best way is to join or create a fundraising team (fundraising teams raise more than 80% of total donations). FSHD is genetic, so the team I'm on consists mostly of my family members and a few friends that also have FSHD, which classes us as a Friends & Family team (as opposed to a corporate team). You need 4 or more people to make a team.
Teams create a website or Facebook group to document their goals and progress. I'm not sure whether or not this is required, but definitely creates a much easier way for people to send in donations online rather than with cash/check.
Then, get the word out! The easiest way to do this is with social media posts that link to your team's webpage, but some teams also put out flyers. And depending on where you work, you could ask your business to be a corporate sponsor, or do a corporate match program, where every dollar donated by an employee is matched by the corporation. Depending on how much you raise you can receive branded items in return: I've gotten an umbrella, backpack, and duffel bag.
If there is no Walk and Roll event near you, you can participate virtually or donate to the FSHD Society at any time through their website.
My team's $2,000 worth of funds raised is actually on the lower end compared to most other teams, who average over $3,000! But remember that every cent counts towards finding a cure for FSHD and helping people living with it :)

What is the requirement for family members visiting Canada on a visitor's visa? Do they need an invitation letter?
Title: Exploring Requirements for Family Members Visiting Canada on a Visitor's Visa
Introduction: Planning a visit to Canada with your family? It's important to be aware of the requirements for family members visiting on a visitor's visa. In this blog post, we will walk you through the essential requirements, including valid documentation, proof of funds, medical exams (if applicable), and the role of an invitation letter. Let's dive in!
Valid Passport and Visitor Visa: The first step in the process is ensuring that each family member has a valid passport. Check the expiry date and make sure it covers the duration of the intended stay. Additionally, obtaining a valid visitor visa is crucial, as it serves as official authorization for entry into Canada.
Proof of Sufficient Funds: To support themselves during their stay, family members must provide proof of sufficient funds. This requirement aims to ensure that visitors can cover their expenses without relying on public funds. Prepare financial documents, such as bank statements, to demonstrate the availability of necessary funds.
Medical Examination: Depending on the visitor's home country, a medical examination may be required. To determine if this applies to your situation, consult the Canadian government's official website or contact the relevant authorities. If necessary, undergo the medical examination as per the provided guidelines.
The Invitation Letter: Optional but Beneficial: While not mandatory, having an invitation letter can greatly facilitate the visa application process. The letter should be written by a sponsor residing in Canada, typically a family member or close relative. It confirms the sponsor's invitation and their commitment to financially support the visitor during their stay. Including the purpose of the visit and the intended duration can provide further context.
When crafting the invitation letter, make sure to include the following details:
Clearly state the purpose of the visit, whether it's for a family reunion, vacation, or other reasons.
Express responsibility for the visitor's financial support during their stay in Canada.
Provide the sponsor's contact information, including phone number and email address, to ensure effective communication with immigration officials if needed.
Conclusion: Planning a family visit to Canada requires careful attention to the necessary requirements. From valid passports and visitor visas to proof of funds and potential medical exams, ensuring compliance with these guidelines is essential. While an invitation letter is not obligatory, it can significantly enhance your visa application. Remember to provide all required documentation, and feel free to consult the Canadian government's official resources for detailed information tailored to your specific situation. Enjoy your time with your family in beautiful Canada!

🎬 I was invited by National University of Singapore to talk about my mid-career learning journey on Channel News Asia/ CNA (an Asean broadcast news network) in April 2023.
During the height of Covid in 2020, I thought it was the opportune moment in life (especially if biz and leisure travel would be very limited) to return to the University environment to attempt a Masters program!
After evaluating a range of MBAs and MSCs programs in Singapore, I applied and was accepted into the / NUS-ISS Master of Technology in Digital Leadership 2-year part-time program (https://lnkd.in/gQtGGE-R).
🧗The journey was tough but one I don't regret.
The program stretched me out of my comfort zone 'in marketing' - and has given me a deeper understand of the technology side of enterprise digital business models, architecture, platforms and ecosystems, and picked up needed skills such as leading through digital complexity and building digital teams.
Most importantly, it has helped me to catalyze new relationships with my course mates from various sectors, the lecturers, the guest-speakers and Capstone Project business sponsors at Bolloré Logistics, one of the global top 10 international transport and logistics operators.
🥃 After 24+ months (including thousands of hours of reading, assignments and presentations) multi-tasking and not sleeping much in between a significant job change, and one more new-born, 2 trips halfway around the world to visit family in Canada, plus the world opening up, I've finally come out alive on the other side.
Thanks to my previous and current bosses and team members, and not forgetting my wife especially for supporting me through the journey.

How to Apply for a Canada Permanent Residence Visa
If you’re a Canadian citizen, you already know the value of permanent residence in this country. But if you’re from another country, your journey to becoming a Canadian resident can be quite daunting. With so many forms and applications to sift through, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
But don’t worry! In this article, I’ll take you through the entire process of apply for a Canada PR visa. I’ll explain everything from eligibility criteria to required paperwork to application fees. This guide will help make your transition into life in Canada as smooth and stress-free as possible!
Determine Your Eligibility for a Canada PR Visa
An important part of your permanent residence visa application is to make sure you meet the criteria for approval. Generally, you must prove that you can become economically established in Canada. This means demonstrating that:
You have sufficient English or French language proficiency to live and work in Canada
You have relevant experience and education as determined by Canadian standards
You pass a medical exam, background check, and security clearance
You possess an employment offer from a Canadian company or be self-employed in Canada
All applicants must go through the same processes, regardless of country of origin. It is important to make sure that all the required documents are submitted with your application so that it can be processed in a timely manner. Applicants may be asked for additional documentation as part of their application process.
Choose a Canada Immigration Program
Once you decide that you want to make Canada your permanent home, the first step is to choose the right immigration program. Canada has a number of immigration programs that offer different pathways to permanent residence. You need to research each one and find the one that best fits your goals and qualifications.
Here are some of the most popular programs:
Express Entry: The Express Entry system allows skilled workers from around the world to immigrate to Canada with their families in as little as six months. This system is points-based and applicants are selected based on their skills, education, work experience, language proficiency and other factors.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Each Canadian province and territory has its own PNP program. These allow provinces and territories to select skilled workers for immigration based on their own criteria.
Family Sponsorship: Canadian citizens or permanent residents can sponsor family members who would like to live in Canada permanently.
Take some time to research each program and determine which one is right for you. Once you have chosen a program and assessed your eligibility, you can start the application process!
Gather the Required Documents to Apply for PR Visa
You'll need to have all the documents ready in order to proceed with your application for a Canada permanent residence visa. To make sure you have everything ready, here's a checklist of the documents you'll need:
Proof of Funds
Proof of funds could come in the form of a bank statement or investment portfolio that shows enough money to support yourself and family while living in Canada. Generally, you should have enough money to cover living expenses and your family’s travel costs for 6 months after arriving in Canada.
Language Ability
You need to prove language ability — either English or French — by providing an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test report or CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) test report, issued within two years of your application.
Education Credential Assessment
The Education Credential Assessment (ECA) is necessary if you’re applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or Canadian Experience Class programs. The assessment compares your foreign educational credentials to those earned in Canada and must be issued by one of three organizations approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Police Certificate
If you’re 18 years old or over, you need a police certificate from any country where you’ve lived for more than six months since turning 18 years old. You may also be asked to provide police certificates from other countries where you've lived since turning 18 years old even if it was for less than six months. These certificates show that you don't have a criminal record and must be up-to-date — issued within six months before submitting an application — and if not available, IRCC may accept older certificates as long as

Many of the farmworkers who come to Canada are from Jaimaca. They come under a visa system, the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, where farms sponsor workers' visas, meaning the workers are tied to the farm and can be deported if their employer is dissatisfied with them. In order to return the following year, the workers need a letter of good behaviour from their employer. The farmworkers are banned from joining trade unions. The crops they grow are worth billions of dollars in exports for Canada.
Back in Jaimaca the workers are peasant farmers. They have small holdings which lack proper irrigation, and the best land is held by sugar plantations in a pattern of land ownership left over from colonial times. While the almost universally male workers are in Canada, female members of the family try their best to maintain the holdings but struggle due to a lack of labour.
Jaimaca is dependent on imports of produce from abroad due to a lack of domestic production, which the country pays for through its foreign currency reserves. The state attempts to support the small farmers to "grow Jaimacan" and save foreign currency on one hand, but on the other actively collaborates with the export of farmworkers to Canada and maintains the sugar plantations in order to bring in additional foreign currency, despite the fact this undermines domestic food production. Canada's export oriented agriculture grows at the expense of Jaimaca's peasant agriculture, and is based on the import and exploitation of Jaimacan small farmers.
