#Sperm whale

One thing I love about the giant squid is that one of the reasons people were so convinced they existed were scars on sperm whales. The LARGEST whale, largest animal we knew existed on earth, would occasionally be seen with scars on their bodies. What could possibly pick a fight with a creature as massive as the Sperm Whale? What's more, while most of these scars were straight lines, sometimes clusters of circular scars could be seen.

Imagine seeing these marks on a whale. You know smaller squid exist, and they make marks like this, just on a micro scale. It's 1910. You are a whaler. The creature you hunt is dangerous, capable of destroying you and your crew if you are unfortunate. And yet somewhere out there, in the vast ocean beneath you, is a creature that can hurt even a behemoth sperm whale. You don't know where it lives, or how common it is. All you can do is pray you never meet one.

Pygmy Sperm Whale: the whales only come to the water’s surface when the sea and weather conditions are very calm. As a result, scientists rarely see pygmy sperm whales at sea. This makes it difficult to estimate their minimum population size or current population trends. They grow to be only 12ft long and can weigh between 700 and 1,000lbs.

Sperm whale! Historically killed for lamp oil - the whaling industry was huge in the 18th century in my area and resources harvested from sperm whales fueled the Industrial Revolution (alas). They use clicking and buzzing sounds for echolocation, hunting giant squid and fish - noises are typically much softer but can reach up to 230 decibels, which is louder than a jet plane!
