Insightful AWE memory of long ago which came to me this morning:

My two friends and I were sitting in the theatre – packed to the gills. We were all watching AWE, when halfway thru the movie, my one friend leaned past the other stuck in-between us and whispered to me:

“WTF is going on?”

The obvious pot holes in the plot regarding Elizabeth and Jack’s relationship was mind boggling. First they were at odds in the Locker, then sentimental when Elizabeth’s dad is deceased. Then being at odds; then Jack making her Pirate King. Jack was contriving with Beckett to have Elizabeth conveniently sail away with him…although he was not talking to her at the time (we were not yet privy to the deleted scenes, natch)….so, on and with head spinning au nausea --- you got the overall gist. We were bounding all over the damned place!

At the end of the film, the three of us were standing there after the Easter Egg scene of Elizabeth on the hill, and then the lights came on. We three stood up and remained there in place, unmoving with the exiting crowd blocking the aisles, poised there like deer frozen in the oncoming headlights. We were stunned. What the hell did we just watch? We were drowning in a flood of intense feelings running gamut of being ripped off, upset, feeling pissed, and duped…..when.........

Suddenly, in the row of theatre seats in front of us, there had been a mid-twenties something couple. This girl and obviously her date/boyfriend had been viewing the movie together. They were waiting to leave too. They’d been pretty quiet thus far during the ordeal, when THE GUY turns to his girlfriend, genuinely upset, had burst forth in a very loud voice and said: I quote:

“No! That cannot be right……but Jack LOVED HER!!” he lamented loudly. His girlfriend looked just as shocked as we three were at hearing his passionate reaction to the movie, but she had no explanation for him. So, while her paramour stood there shaking his head, he said it AGAIN, “Jack loved Elizabeth! I thought that he was in love with her???” He was clearly suffering from a Sparrabeth anxiety attack!!!! LOL!

And just short of laughing out loud at his expressive string of expletives following that announcement of how lame the movie was because of that reason, I remember thinking to myself: *(and no offence guys, but generally you all are not really that swift when it comes to the love/romance department)

Even a fucking GUY could see that Jack and Elizabeth were in love, and given the royal romantic shaft in AWE!! That one lone guy, whomever he was, had put it all into sharp perspective for me that very second --- what had been done to Jack and Elizabeth in AWE! (not to mention where they stuck Elizabeth and left her....don’ t get me started, a separate rant there)

But the point is: The impact from that experience in the theater reflected by that one guy’s remarks, are still felt to this day! The Sparrabeth debacle which occurred at the end of that POTC trilogy will forever be a profound memory!!

Thought I’d pass that POTC gem along……………………  :)

So I just rewatched all the potc movies when that deleted scene surfaced up about jack freeing the slaves bc it opened up all of my old feelings about these movies & omg. I’m mad again about the ending of awe bc it’s so fatalistic for Elizabeth?? Like okay she’s obviously in love with jack & then during that fight will is all marry me & she basically says no??? She’s like I don’t think nows the best time? But wills so insistent on it like what’s she going to do? Say no to him & have him die bc he was thrown off his sword fighting game bc she just broke his heart?? She literally had to say yes, & she doesn’t even actually say yes she just yells for Barbossa to marry them. She had no real choice in that marriage & she doesn’t exactly seem thrilled about it considering she never even gave will a real answer to the question. Then when jack is holding the heart his choices were stab it himself & lose Elizabeth bc she’d be mad at him for letting will die or have will stab it & lose Elizabeth bc will would still be alive. I have so much to say about sparrabeth in awe & it’s all just not fair

They did butcher jack in stranger tides but the whole time I was dying bc here jack was just trying to live his life post-Elizabeth & his ex lover comes back & he’s not even interested in her after Elizabeth?? Like my heart 😭 I completely agree that the part in the new trailer where carina undresses jack is completely pervy which is totally out of character for him. (Also you mean to tell me after all that time jack never figured out how to get the pearl out of that damn bottle??? Like jack has always known all the legends & secrets of the pirates I’m sure he would have known this too?) I’m really trying not to have high expectations for this movie bc i don’t want to be disappointed so I’ve decided that all I really want is a scene that will try to make sparrabeth okay. I was really hoping it would be something like jack telling Henry that he knew his mom & some subtle line from Henry that showed that Elizabeth still loved him & told Henry stories about jack but I guess that scene where jack asks if “mummy asks” about him shot that dream. For whatever reason I’m still holding out hope & maybe there will be something to justify jacks straight up weird/wrong behavior bc he just kinda lost it after the whole Davy Jones/elizabeth thing? I don’t agree with the whole he looks like he’s asking about an old lover thing bc he looks completely deranged when he asks (although as much as it pains me he looks close to deranged the whole time?). But when Henry says no he like can’t believe it? (But I mean who can bc pirate king?? Why would she not have told her son that captain jack sparrow saved his fathers life??? Maybe in reality Johnny is the only one who didn’t abandon the original ideas of potc?).

oh hello there! you made some points with which i agree so much! i prefer to leave the will/abeth wedding out of this (my problem with it goes way back.. remember “then how can i trust you? you can’t” convo?? well they NEVER talked about it again in fact they didn’t talk much ANYMORE till they suddenly forgot all about their issues but like??? okAY) ANYWAY forgetting about it, the part where you point out jack was going to lose her either way?? uGH!!! but AT LEAST if he didn’t stab the heart he would be free and they could MAYBE meet again in the future in good terms!!!! but it’s still so heartbreaking!!!!

also jack looks so BAD after potc3... you wouldn’t even say that only 4 years (in real life) passed between awe and ost bc like????? even the way he talks and moves is different, he looks so much worse and his personality is so far gone... “deranged” is such a good way of describing it tbh bc had we not seen jack after his locker experience and the way he coped with “madness” would i have taken it as his way of coping with the loss of will and lizzie.... but NOPE sorry can’t take that either! “the world’s still the same... there’s just less in it” that’s my baby son right there accepting that the WORLD moved on after his death and accepting that LOSS is part of it so!!! the writers totally destroyed him!!! how can you take awe!jack with all his depth and the look of UTTER SHOCK AND SADNESS upon seeing will’s death and his happy face when he saw him again and then again the heartbreaking yet pretending-to-be-okay LOOK ON HIS FACE WHEN LIZZIE LEFT like how is it possible that we are SEEING THE SAME MAN and remember when he looked to the horizon after the pearl was stolen AGAIN?? for a moment there you can feel his pain but then he’s back again singing “a pirate’s life for me” and the compass is working and he’s off searching for the fountain and there’s hope again!!!! my baby son was broken but he found his own way of living with it and it’s a pirate life indeed!!!!! and now!!!!!! henry appears out of nowhere saying he’s will and lizzie’s son and he makes the typical joke like!!!!! if it’s true that he hasn’t SEEN THEM FOR 20 YEARS why reduce that revelation to a joke!!! the more i think about it the angrier i get! and you are right HOW IN HELL hasn’t elizabeth talked about jack!!!! how did she explain to her son how his father got cursed to begin with?? it was JACK who gave up immortality for him!!! it was JACK who saved lizzie that day as he saved her the first day from drowning!! why are the writers reducing all of that to NOTHING! to just make some stupid joke!!!!!!!

SO SORRY ANON!! I was answering a bunch of questions and had not realized once answered, they get deleted - so I plucked the wrong one left! Anyway, this is my response for anon who stated disappointment of Elizabeth not mentioning Jack in potc5, that it was next to impossible for her not to tell her son Henry anything at all about her adventures with Will and Jack Sparrow:

I quite agree with you Anon, and would venture to go a step further – you NEVER forget a passionate/romantic love in your life. A woman carries those memories to her death bed whether or not she shares those memories with anyone else. I just think that Disney never got over that major whiplash of Sparrabeth phenomenon, despite the writers had been given the green light to write a romantic love story between them, yet be real cheeky about it and deny that is what they did. If that were the case, then JD and KK were the actors and directors of the films and Gore Verbinski had no say in the matter and his actors ran amok while filming! CLEARLY their characters (J & E) were initially set up to be romantically involved for BOX OFFICE DRAW and more appeal. JD was the star of the film and KK the latest hot, top young ingénue actress from England, which the USA had never heard of at the time.

Case in point, POTC1 hit like wildfire and so Disney execs wanted to capitalize on the formula that worked with POTC1 to generate BIG BUCKS again in POTC2. SO, the writers took that recipe and doubled up on POTC2 – BUT, then it was too late after the Sparrabeth combo seemed to hit popularity and became the PREFERRED coupling to the willabeth ideal, it was a disaster as Ted and Terry admitted and had to deal with it accordingly. The actors JD and KK knew it and were surprised. The Disney executives knew it and said so what, it put money into their pockets! What to do next to rake in more bucks? POTC3 was the answer of course, but at the expense of the movie’s quality because of cutting out so many scenes between Jack and Lizzie, was the weakest offering. AWE was a great flick, but romantically it felt anemic and forced, so the audiences suffered by getting confused and going WTF?????? It felt like there were pot holes and empty spots in POTC3 because there WERE – ie the deleted scenes with Jack and Elizabeth which would have tied up the plot endings of this movie far better than it had with the existing released film version.

Anyway, go enjoy POTC5 – I am going to take it for what it is, entertaining fun. My only sorrow is - as being a big Jack Sparrow lover, I think Jack’s character has been sort of de-sexed; tailored strictly for appealing to children (not a bad thing, but disappointing to adults who loved Jack as a clever, savvy, virile, trickster pirate). JD is not getting any younger, but it is sad to see him reduced to a comedic buffoon without any real adult characteristics, humanity, or serious thoughts within this film version of him. That is my overall impression so far at this writing by what I have seen on the peripheral sidelines. Only when I see the film myself first hand will I be able to make a concise decision. But what I have gleaned so far, does not give me hope that my opinion will be altered. ☹
