Insightful AWE memory of long ago which came to me this morning:
My two friends and I were sitting in the theatre – packed to the gills. We were all watching AWE, when halfway thru the movie, my one friend leaned past the other stuck in-between us and whispered to me:
“WTF is going on?”
The obvious pot holes in the plot regarding Elizabeth and Jack’s relationship was mind boggling. First they were at odds in the Locker, then sentimental when Elizabeth’s dad is deceased. Then being at odds; then Jack making her Pirate King. Jack was contriving with Beckett to have Elizabeth conveniently sail away with him…although he was not talking to her at the time (we were not yet privy to the deleted scenes, natch)….so, on and with head spinning au nausea --- you got the overall gist. We were bounding all over the damned place!
At the end of the film, the three of us were standing there after the Easter Egg scene of Elizabeth on the hill, and then the lights came on. We three stood up and remained there in place, unmoving with the exiting crowd blocking the aisles, poised there like deer frozen in the oncoming headlights. We were stunned. What the hell did we just watch? We were drowning in a flood of intense feelings running gamut of being ripped off, upset, feeling pissed, and duped…..when.........
Suddenly, in the row of theatre seats in front of us, there had been a mid-twenties something couple. This girl and obviously her date/boyfriend had been viewing the movie together. They were waiting to leave too. They’d been pretty quiet thus far during the ordeal, when THE GUY turns to his girlfriend, genuinely upset, had burst forth in a very loud voice and said: I quote:
“No! That cannot be right……but Jack LOVED HER!!” he lamented loudly. His girlfriend looked just as shocked as we three were at hearing his passionate reaction to the movie, but she had no explanation for him. So, while her paramour stood there shaking his head, he said it AGAIN, “Jack loved Elizabeth! I thought that he was in love with her???” He was clearly suffering from a Sparrabeth anxiety attack!!!! LOL!
And just short of laughing out loud at his expressive string of expletives following that announcement of how lame the movie was because of that reason, I remember thinking to myself: *(and no offence guys, but generally you all are not really that swift when it comes to the love/romance department)
Even a fucking GUY could see that Jack and Elizabeth were in love, and given the royal romantic shaft in AWE!! That one lone guy, whomever he was, had put it all into sharp perspective for me that very second --- what had been done to Jack and Elizabeth in AWE! (not to mention where they stuck Elizabeth and left her....don’ t get me started, a separate rant there)
But the point is: The impact from that experience in the theater reflected by that one guy’s remarks, are still felt to this day! The Sparrabeth debacle which occurred at the end of that POTC trilogy will forever be a profound memory!!
Thought I’d pass that POTC gem along……………………  :)

Part 21/? Modern Sparrabeth AU Immortal Jack and Reincarnated Lizzy fic outline continuation. (I’m now tagging these #Julia’sModernSparrabethAU if you want to look at them all together in order, just click on the tag down below)
“Are you all right?” she demands, eyes wide as she looks over Jack and tries to watch the road at the same time.
“Fine,” Jack answers, fishing in the cooler in the back seat for some ice, putting it on his eye.
They don’t really talk for the rest of the ride home. Jack is happy to let Lizzy drive—she proved more than capable, and he vaguely wonders if the rude boys managed to get their suv righted or if it fell down the side of the mountain. Served them right.
He recognized one of the thugs from Lizzy’s hotel debacle, and knew the others from a gang based in Kingston who often worked as muscle for hire. He’d had run-ins with them before.
The question was, hired by whom?
Back home, Jack sits in a kitchen chair and lets Lizzy fuss over his eye. He’ll be fine, he knows, but it feels nice to have someone worry over him. He didn’t really feel how alone he’s been, until she dropped into his life again.
“You poor thing,” she says, kissing his other cheek. Jack catches her hand, pressing his lips to her knuckles. A part of him just wants to keep the peace. Just wants to keep doing…whatever they had been doing.
Getting to know each other?
Falling in love?
But he knows it was no coincidence the same thugs were waiting for them on the mountain today.
There’s a long silence, Jack’s dark gaze weighing hers. She feels like he can see right through her when he looks at her like that. “So, Lizzy. You want to tell me what all this is about?”
There is a moment in which Elizabeth entertains denying it all to the ground. She bites her lip, considering Jack. “I never thought this would come to violence,” she says apologetically. “I certainly never meant to involve you.”
Jack cants his head, his curiosity whetted. Patiently, he waits.
She goes to fetch her rucksack and empties out all the contents on the floor, until she’s able to access a secret zipper in the bottom. From which she produces a handsome wooden box, and places it before Jack.
Raising an eyebrow, he flips the catch, revealing a stack of folded papers inside. Old papers. Letters.
When he looks to her questioningly Elizabeth asks, “Have you ever heard of the pirate Benjamin Bannister?”

2/? Anyway, I guess I could see the comedic aspect of the scene. It just feels weird that dear Elizabeth never mentioned Jack to Henry at all. I mean, even from a non-shipping pov, it just doesn't make any sense. At the end of AWE, it was rather clear that, at the very least, they were friends. HE BLOODY GAVE HER A CHANCE TO BE WITH HER HUSAND FOR GOODNESS SAKE. HE BLOODY SAVED WILL. AND NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME THAT IT'S NOT, AT LEAST, PARTLY BECAUSE OF ELIZABETH.
Yes, I agree with you as well on this point! Granted, Jack saved Elizabeth’s life three times and Will saved her - I count one, unless I missed another time. But that is academic – the real reason has to do with love. I think the characters of Jack and Elizabeth were THE dynamic love story throughout the POTC original trilogy. I sort of answered that in another anon response (by goof, since I do not do this often LOL!), about how it was contrived particularly from behind the desks of Disney execs for the old $$$$$cashola$$$$!
But the instincts of the actors were spot on as KK and JD played their parts accurately and in the eye of the camera, under the guide of a seasoned film director! So, they did not make mistakes in their Interpretations or abandon film protocol and acted as they pleased, a Sparrabeth love interest in POTC was PURPOSEFUL!! That is what makes the sting of the retractions by the writers all the more dire – by insulting the fans intelligence! I saw it as a lack of professional integrity. Do not try to pull a fast one on us, we will call you out on that – and we DID!
I heard T & T tried to resolve the matter with trying to convince the Disney execs to go Sparrabeth, but they flatly refused; would not hear of it. That is why T & T came back with the pitiful excuse of saying: “Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth’s romance was merely created for plot enhancement and character development, and Jack was merely a bump in the road romantically for Elizabeth – she loved Will Turner). What a debacle that was! NOBODY back at that time in 2006 bought that line of crap, but that is nevertheless what we were spoon fed! Crap!
That scene in POTC5 where Henry denies Elizabeth spoke of him is hurtful because I loved these characters and the love they shared to me is canon. I will never be convinced by anyone till the day that I die, that Jack and Lizzie had loved one another deeply!!
