Best Barcelona Neighborhood for Gay Home Owners

Barcelona has no clear gay neighborhood, the Barcelona residents are pretty much a mixed bunch in every neighborhood. You can find gay, straight, black, white, local and expat in most neighborhoods. The city is liberal, cosmopolitan and tolerant of diversity; Barcelona residents like to break taboos and actively support freedom of choice and expression. That said there are certain attractions and areas which have become popular with the Barcelona gay community.

Sitges Beach is popular with the gay community. Eixample has many gay bars and clubs especially near Calle Diputacio, Arago Street, Calle Balmes and Villaroel. Barcelona hosts the Circuit Festival Barcelona in August which is a major LGBT event as well as BEARcelona at Easter time, Barcelona Gay Pride in June and the International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in October. You can find hotels geared towards the gay community in Les Corts and Eixample.

New gay home owners in Barcelona can feel comfortable choosing the neighborhood which bests them personally rather than sticking to any particular “gay enclave”.

Gaixample

The left side of Eixample has been nicknamed Gaixample due to the many gay residents and places of entertainment as well as gay oriented stores, saunas, discos and restaurants. It is popular with LGBT tourism as well as residents who sometimes fly the rainbow flag from their balconies. The concentration of gay businesses can be found on Carrer Diputacio and Gaixample in general is bordered by Balmes, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Arago and Comte d’Urgell. The area extends around the university from Villadomat to Passeig de Gracia.

Sitges

With its popular gay beach and artsy reputation the town of Sitges has a substantial gay community. The town is 35km southwest of Barcelona and as far back as the 1960s has a reputation for its counterculture or mini-Ibiza. It is often rated as one of the most gay-friendly places in the world. Approximately 35% of Sitges’ population is expats from the Netherlands, France, Scandinavia and the UK. Although this is a great place for LGBT home owners the property here is expensive due to the town’s 17 beaches, surrounding Parc Natural del Garraf and high standard of living.
