OTD in Music History: Legendary Spanish conductor, composer, and violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate (1844 - 1908) dies in France. A well-respected conductor and a highly gifted composer, Sarasate is undoubtedly best remembered today for being one the very greatest violin virtuosos of the Romantic era. It should be noted, however, that his compositional efforts usually dovetailed very closely with his concertizing career -- his most famous original works include the "Spanish Dances" (published in four volumes between 1877 - 1882), the "Zigeunerweisen" ("Gypsy Airs") (1878), and the show-stopping "Carmen Fantasy" (1882) on themes taken from George Bizet's (1838 - 1875) famous opera, "Carmen" (1875)... all of which were specifically written to showcase a virtuoso violin soloist. Of Sarasate's unusually effective and highly idiomatic writing for his own instrument, famed British playwright and music critic George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950) once declared that while there have been many composers of music *for the violin*, there are very few composers *of violin music* -- and then went on to identify Sarasate as a member of that rarified latter caste. And concerning Sarasate's abilities as a performer of his own works, Shaw hastened to add that he "obviously left all criticism gasping miles behind him." PICTURED: A c. 1900 real photo postcard showing the elderly Sarasate holding his violin.

I just read a detailed account of the Bal des Ifs and I’d never realised how funny this event was when you don’t focus on Madame de Pompadour. All I was taught at school is that it was the masquerade ball in 1745 where Louis XV first took (public) notice of la Pompadour, but what I didn’t know was that the former royal mistress had recently died so there was a vacancy so to speak, and a lot of noblewomen showed up specifically hoping to catch the King’s attention.
But he came dressed up as a shrub (a yew tree similar to the ones in the royal topiary gardens) along with seven other men in identical costumes, so no one knew for sure which one was the King. People always focus on how Madame de Pompadour recognised the royal shrub and talked to him, but what about the women who didn’t!! History is written by the winners but I want to hear about the women who doggedly danced the minuet with random shrubs hoping this one was the one. My book mentions that a determined noble lady followed a yew tree outside the room on a hunch, only to find that she had bet on the wrong shrub. This is what the shrub costumes looked like by the way, imagine stalking one all over the park of Versailles at night because you think his gait looks kingly and you are an ambitious noblewoman

Photos at Madrid's Victory ball! 💃
We attended our first ball! It was such a dreamlike experience!! It was also our first time doing Regency reenactment so it was a challenge. We haphazardly put together some looks, had a great time learning more about the fashion and the dances and met a bunch of lovely people from all over the world. The palace was stunning, the live band was wonderful and the food delicious, it was an unforgettable night 🥰

OTD in Music History: Composer and concert pianist Pantaleon Enrique Joaquin Granados Campina (1867 - 1916) -- better known as Enrique Granados -- drowns in the frigid waters of the English Channel, after his passenger ferry is torpedoed by a German U-boat as part of Germany's WWI policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. One survivor reported that Granados actually made it into a lifeboat… but then heroically dived back into the water in a futile attempt to save his wife. Ironically, the part of the ferry that housed the Granados family never sunk; almost all of the passengers who were bunked in that section survived, except for Granados and his wife, who just happened to be strolling on the opposite side of the boat when it was hit. They left behind six children. Granados is remembered today for his epic piano suite "Goyescas" (1911), a set of six difficult concert showpieces based on paintings by Francisco Goya (1746 -1828). “Goyescas” was an immediate hit, and Granados was encouraged to expand it into an opera, which premiered in New York in January 1916 and was very well received. Based on the success of that premiere, Granados was then invited to perform a private piano recital for President Woodrow Wilson in Washington, DC. His acceptance of this honor delayed his planned return to Europe, thus placing him and his wife on the doomed ferry vessel. (The opera version of “Goyescas” is no longer performed.) PICTURED: A 1903 autograph letter written by Granados to a friend on the stationary of his private music school -- the "Academia Granados" -- regarding musical matters. That same year, Granados participated in a composition competition at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, submitting his "Allegro de concierto" (Op. 46) which earned the prize and catapulted him into musical stardom.

so i watched the brazilian dub of venom: the last dance and there's a scene where (i assume) the english lines go something like "you're being passive aggressive" "i'll be active aggressive, then" which would be a regular joke dialog between them except. they translated the lines literally. and the words "active" and "passive" in portuguese are Brazilian queer slang for "top" and "bottom". meaning eddie basically said "i'll be the top, then." so. do with that what you will<3

“Kelly has played with being sexy a lot in the previous films. But of course I think I'm the sexiest man of the year. I wake up every morning thinking that this makes sense.” ❤️‍🔥 — 𝗧𝗼𝗺
You are the sexiest man in the universe, and what beautiful eyes you have 🥰
And as a gift, 𝗧𝗼𝗺 saying "Hello" to us in Spanish!!! I really wanted to listen to him speak Spanish 😍💖
And I wanted to say that I like feeling overwhelmed by having so much new 𝗧𝗼𝗺 content that we're getting, because I've already had a bad time feeling overwhelmed because 𝗧𝗼𝗺 didn't appear 💓
⠀⠀⠀⠀

The best part as a Latina was watching him not knowing what was going on when Lupita and the interviewer were speaking spanish. Oh and when she asked him if he knew how to dance Merengue? Not bad of a british white boy... I pay my respect
Despierta America thank you for giving Latinos this content 🙌
