EEXI Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index
SimFWD has been providing to customers a range of Advanced Engineering Services related to Ship Design. These services have nowadays become relevant to EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index) requirements: - SHIP HYDRODYNAMICS - PROPELLER DESIGN - VIBRATION AND ACOUSTICS - ENERGY SAVING DEVICE (ESD) ASSESSMENT - PERFORMANCE BENCHMARKING - OVERALL RETROFITTING
SimFWD has accumulated experience on Ship Hydrodynamic Analysis from Newbuilding and Retrofitting projects of Tankers, Bulk Carriers and Passenger Vessels. The most common ESDs on Tankers are Mewis Ducts or other type of ducts in front of the propellers as well as Boss Cap Fins. Other ESDs consisting only of swirl-eliminating fins are rated less effective due to generally low propeller pitch and hence low swirl losses on these propellers.
SimFWD can assist Clients in EEXI evaluation by means of Propulsion power demand and associated emissions combined with the rest of energy components into a standalone EEXI monitoring and reporting application. Contact us at [email protected] for more information.

Assessment of Panama Fittings using midasNFX
https://www.simfwd.com/A document issued by the Panama Canal Authority states a detailed list of requirements for ships for compliance with Panama Canal rules and regulations during Panama Canal transit. This document contains an entire section dedicated to the construction, number and location of mooring fittings on board the vessel. Each of these fittings has a Safe Working Load (SWL) Limit which has been specified by the manufacturer. The structural integrity of each fitting and the deck on which it is mounted is then investigated by applying loads as per international Standards.
SimFWD has completed several projects wherein 2D drawings of Mooring fittings onboard a ship were used to generate a 3D model. The 3D Model was prepared and meshed in midasNFX and the relevant loading cases were then investigated using Finite Element Analysis. Shown in the figure below is one such study performed for a closed chock and bitt.
Mooring fittings are critical items in terms of safety and operation of a ship and have gained importance in the process of Ship Design due to the new regulations. SimFWD performs a Comprehensive Assessment of Structures and Fittings followed up by enhancement proposals and rules check.

Computer Aided Engineering
SimFWD is a research, development and application company, providing engineering services in the transport and construction industries. The company focuses on Computer Aided Engineering technologies such as CFD and FEM applied to Ship Design, using which turnkey solutions to complicated generic problems are provided in a cost effective manner.
For most of it’s simulation work, SimFWD has been utilizing in-house computational resources. But with the increasing complexity of models and for CFD computations, these in-house resources are pushed to the limit and are often deemed insufficient. By participating in an UberCloud Experiment, SimFWD was in a position to become familiar with the mechanics of running a NUMECA FINE/Marine simulation in an UberCloud software container and to assess the performance of the cloud compared to resources currently in use.
The largest benefit of the cloud solution is that the user now has access to much larger computational resources than before at a modest price and without making a large initial investment. It is basically a one-stop solution including hardware, licensing and maintenance costs giving the user the flexibility to deploy it on a per project basis. This trend shall provide a big boost to R&D engineering and make simulation more accessible to small and medium scale enterprises.

Ballast Water Treatment Engineering
As per IMO guidelines, on-board Ballast Water Treatment(BWT) systems will soon need to be installed on most ships. There are several manufacturers of BWT systems offering different treatment systems – UV systems, chemical injection systems & electrolytic system. There are several factors which need to be considered to choose a system which is best suited to a particular vessel.
Additionally, ship owners will also be needed to make the decision to either install exhaust gas scrubbers or to switch to low-sulphur marine fuel oil.
In co-operation with our partners, we offer you turnkey solutions for the installation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems & Scrubber Retrofit on-board, helping you choose the right system and thereby reducing costs and increasing efficiency. Our range of Services include:
· Technical & Economic based evaluation
· On-board Survey & 3D Laser Scanning
· Feasibility Studies & Virtual Installation
· Classification Drawings & Pre-fabrication
· Installation & On-site Supervision

Ship Structural Analysis as an integral part of the entire design process
SimFWD provides to customers integrated design and engineering services in Maritime / Offshore and Shipbuilding projects of different types and size. Our range of services starts from the concept idea until the ship is put in service and continues through life-cycle service as maintenance, repair and conversion.
We have the ability to address all steps of the Ship Design and engineering processes with high quality. Concept Design is the starting point of the project where we define main characteristics with the aid of state of the art software and statistical databases. Basic Design is then developed according to national and international rules and verified by advanced engineering analyses. Detailed Design comprises all engineering and construction documentation for the Shipyard. Finally, Engineering Management services include supervision, management, budgeting and operational works of the project assuring quality and schedule.
Engineering Services include Ship Structural Analysis, Ship Hydrodynamic Analysis, etc.
As FEM consultants, we also offer a wide range of services in the field of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). SimFWD Engineering Services are experts in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and 3D Laser Scanning. The main goal is to assess the resistance reduction in the most efficient and reliable engineering CFD workflow. The work performed is a meticulous examination of the mechanics of running NUMECA FINE™/Marine simulations in an UberCloud software container and to assess the performance of the cloud compared to resources currently used by SIMFWD. The benchmark is analyzed on local hardware, on virtual instances in the cloud, and on the bare-metal / container cloud solution offered by cloud provider CPU 24/7 and UberCloud.
SimFWD also has several years of experience using LS-DYNA for Static and Dynamic Analyses with special expertise in the field of Passenger Safety in Crash Simulations.
