“Although not domesticated, Murley enjoyed spending time with Sabine Wren, greeting and following her around in her tower, finding the living space comfortable.”
Nice to know that cat’s randomly deciding you have a cat now is a thing in Star Wars.

Is Ryloth based on Algeria?
A while back, some friends and I had an interesting discussion about why Star Wars has the Twi'lek speak with French accent, and the implication that Ryloth could perhaps be inspired by a country formerly colonized by France.
We discovered there were A LOT of parallels between Ryloth and the country of Algeria
Political History & Colonialism
Algeria became a colony of France after they invaded it in 1830. Their conquest of Algeria has been called a genocide, and they perpetrated countless atrocities- starvation, epidemics, retaliation for resistance, etc. During that time period, there were popular revolts against the French occupation, and insurgent groups, guerilla warfare, etc., particularly in the decade prior to their independence, which Algerians finally won in 1962.
Ryloth's rulers/most powerful political official(s) are always shown as off-world, corrupt, disconnected from the life and struggles of its people, and allowing the people and resources of the planet to exploited. First, this is under Senator Orn Free Taa, then Separatist occupation, then the Empire.
Throughout that same history of oppression and exploitation, we also see armed resistance movements and guerilla fighters, like the Twi'lek Resistance and the Free Ryloth Movement.
Geography
Algeria is the largest country in Africa. It contains a significant portion of the Sahara Desert, and hosts many impressive rock formations.
Ryloth is a large planet on the Outer Rim. Whenever we see Ryloth on-screen, it almost always shows the desert, is peppered with incredible rock formations, gorges, etc.
Architecture
The homes and structures we see on Ryloth are reminiscent of traditional &/or vernacular mud-brick architecture in Algeria and its neighbor, Morocco. For example:
The Syndulla House
Numa's Village (from The Clone Wars S1E20)
The Capital City (from The Clone Wars S1E21)
Interior Design
We also see themes and details that are strongly reminiscent of Islamic architecture in, for example, the design of the Syndulla family's home.
This is also true of simpler homes, like the ones in Numa's village from The Clone Wars, which utilize subtle geometric motifs and Arabesque patterned windows.
Art
Mosaic art was one of the hallmarks of Roman and Byzantine and Islamic Empires, all of which Algeria was part of, and had their history and culture influenced by.
The Syndulla family portrait is a mosaic.
Head Coverings
The vast majority of Algerians identify as Muslim. It's very common practice for Muslim women to wear the hijab, which covers their hair.
Every time we see a female Twi'lek on-screen she is wearing a head-band or head-covering. We very rarely see male Twi'lek do so.
Language and Accents
As a remnant of the legacy of French colonialism, French is widely spoken and understood in Algeria, though its official language is Arabic.
Many Twi'lek speak Galactic Basic, and do so with a French-sounding accent, though Twi'leki is their native language.
Anything else?
#sources are basically just Wookiepedia and Wikipedia and my useless college degree lol#i did my best but i'm no expert so please correct me if my terminology etc is wrong!#star wars#twi'lek#ryloth#star wars meta#sw meta#sw numa#hera syndulla#star wars rebels#the clone wars#sw rebels#mine#it's not a PERFECT parallel but it's still pretty close as these things go

If I was even remotely good at finishing things I start, I'd make a SWTOR wiki with the level of detail and citation the Dragon Age wiki has
#because it's amazing and i've been spoiled by it#wookiepedia's sourcing is ... less than ideal for swtor and is missing so much sutff

Obitine Week 2023, Day 3 - Oranges
Prompt: Fruit
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 269
Read on AO3
He opened his mouth obediently, let her place it on his tongue, and when he bit down, it burst, beautifully sweet.
“Ben!”
He startled at the shout, adrenaline starting to pump in anticipation of a fight, before he realised she hadn’t called out in fear, but in excitement.
“Ben, come and see this!”
Satine was halfway up a tree before he made it over, but he didn’t realise what she was after until she threw it at his head and he caught it on instinct. Some kind of fruit - it would have smelled good in any circumstance but right now, having not eaten in days, it was practically divine.
“Oranges!” she called, blonde hair just visible amongst the leaves. “Loads of them.”
He grinned, her excitement contagious. “Throw some down, we can take them to Master Jinn!”
Apparently she’d been waiting for that - several flew down at once, and Obi-Wan was hard pressed to keep them from smacking him. He wanted to glower and only ended up laughing.
They had a good pile before Satine swung down to meet him, holding one last orange in her hands. “Ever had one?”
He shook his head. “Never. Mandalorian imports aren’t very common in the Temple.”
“Well then.” She peeled it in an instant, split it into segments and pushed one against his lips. “Go on.”
He opened his mouth obediently, let her place it on his tongue, and when he bit down, it burst, beautifully sweet. “Oh,” he said, and she laughed.
He grabbed another segment; she opened her mouth immediately and curled her tongue around his fingers, catching every drop of juice.
“If you give me a fruit kink,” he said, “I shall be very upset with you.”
She smirked. “Good.”

The Journey of Clone Force 99 (and Friends)
a fun little research project i've been working on -- mapping out the locations visited by [members of] Clone Force 99, as seen on-screen in their Clone Wars Season 7 arc and The Bad Batch show itself. i really wanted to see where these locations were in relation to each other in the big, wide, Star Wars galaxy.
click on the map images to enlarge them in new tabs/windows; hopefully you can read the planet names better that way!
the full list of locations -- known, and unknown (ie. not on the map) -- are listed below, along with my resources and other notes. enjoy! 😊🗺️📌
~~~~~~~~~
Note #1: Any planet names on the map that I had to add/type in myself are locations that I had to approximate, based on their Wookiepedia entries. They're not 100% accurate but I feel they're pretty darn close!
Note #2: This is NOT the complete map of all locations visited -- there were about 10 places that had planet or moon names in Wookiepedia, but no information on their location within the galaxy, not even a sector name.
Note #3: the pink-purple "misc" locations are ones that were either A) visited by non-CF99 characters, and/or B) mentioned or shown on-screen but no one really 'went' to the planet. They're all mentioned in the big list at the end of these notes.
Resources:
primary map (the one in the images above); from Wookiepedia. I desaturated the colours for better visuals and trimmed the edges a little.
used the links here to access the sector maps for the Outer and Mid Rims. it's an older but legitimate Star Wars source, from a book published in 2009, but I believe it has remained accurate and carried over into the Disney Canon. I used this a lot for the locations that weren't on the primary map -- Wookiepedia gave me the planet's sector name, and I was able to find the sector using these maps.
this map is fan-made and can be zoomed into very closely to see a lot more locations. There are also faint outlines for the sectors. I don't think this map itself is 100% accurate either, but it was still very helpful in confirming some locations I was approximating.
Fun things I noticed:
with it's "cameo" / intro appearance at the very end of Season 1, Wayland/Tantiss is the only location that we see in all three TBB seasons.
(unless there was a Coruscant scene i'm forgetting from S1??? that would be the other most likely candidate. but I think we only visit Coruscant in S2 and S3.)
(Ord Mantell came kinda close, with an indirect reference in S3, re: the imperials finding and questioning Cid.)
~~~~~~~~~
The VERY LONG list of locations, by approximate chronological appearance in TCW and TBB:
The Clone Wars Season 7 -- Bad Batch arc
Anaxes
Skako Minor
The Bad Batch, Season 1
Kaller
Kamino
Onderon
Saleucami
Ordo moon (location on map UNKNOWN)
Idaflor ("misc") -- at the beginning of Ep 4, Hunter says he wants to hide out on uninhabited Idaflor for awhile. Tech says they need supplies and they end up going to...
Pantora
Ord Mantell
Corellia (where they retrieve the tactical droid head)
Bracca
Bora Vio (Kaminoan cloning facility; location on map UNKNOWN, although I'd guess it's relatively close to Kamino)
Raxus
Ryloth
Daro (where they rescued Gregor)
(cameo appearance by Wayland, aka location of Mount Tantiss / Tantiss Base)
Season 2
Serenno
Desix (Crosshair only; with Cody et al.)
Serolonis (Safa Toma riot racing; location on map UNKNOWN)
Skara Nul
Vanguard Axis station/base (location on map UNKNOWN)
Kashyyyk
Coruscant
Ipsidon (ipsium mine; Mokko & kids)
Silla (crashed science vessel & escaped Zillo Beast; location on map UNKNOWN)
Barton IV (outpost w/Mayday)
Tantiss (Crosshair only)
Pabu
Balmorra ("misc") -- where we see an imprisoned Howzer being transferred; he's rescued by Echo & co. in Balmorra's orbit
Eriadu
Ord Mantell
Season 3
Tantiss
Devaron (home of the Isa Durand's council, per Wookiepedia)
Setron (abandoned Hemlock base with the slither vines; where Hunter & Wrecker find the younger clones Mox, Deke, and stak; location on map UNKNOWN)
Lau (where Crosshair & Omega crash their stolen shuttle; location on map UNKNOWN)
nameless Ryloth moon (where everyone reunites)
Pabu
Barton IV
Pantora ("misc") (Rex, Howzer, and co. only; where Riyo Chuchi meets Raxus's Sentor Singh in secret)
Teth
Veelo (where Fennec Shand, Hunter, and Wrecker track down Sylar Saris; location on map UNKNOWN)
random asteroid where Phee gases up her ship & CX-2 sneaks aboard (location completely unknown)
Erebus (labour camp where Rampart is being held; location on map UNKNOWN)
Bora Vio (Kaminoan cloning facility where they meet Echo and his stolen imperial shuttle; location on map UNKNOWN, although I'd guess it's relatively close to Kamino)
Coruscant imperial orbital station (where they latch onto Tantiss shuttle)
Pabu
BONUS -- Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories #10, which featured Clone Force 99 (pre-Order66)
Hylanth moon (location on map UNKNOWN)
~~~~~
if I've missed anything, or something seems incorrect, please let me know!! again, it's not 100% accurate or complete, but I've tried my best :)
You wouldn't happen to have an extensive layout dissection of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant? Or even a list of all notable and obscure sections of the Jedi Temple? OR or even labelled areas that are public and reserved for only temple residents. Both from canon and legends, please and thank you!!!
The best I managed to find comes from Star Wars Complete Locations - you may check out the whole archived version here. The “zoom in” option is pretty good for reading details. Below the pages (I suppose the best is to open them in new tab for better reading):
As for the list of locations, I recommend wookiepedia's list. Plenty of data, both for Legends and New Canon.
Additional sources worth to check out:
Jedi Temple Locations & Jedi Temple History - both published as official material on star wars.com in regard to prequels and New Canon sources. Pictures and references to various places inside Temple.
Star Wars.com's The Clone Wars episode guide + videoclips from the series, like
A) Jedi Archives Tour (the entrance to one of the most restricted areas of the temple: The Holocron Vault).
B) Layout of Jedi Temple Library (source)
C) Jedi Temple funeral room + environment illustration by Tara Rueping (source)
Old Data Bank for Jedi Temple
HoloNews mentioning "a mob of 20 university students attempted to infiltrate the Jedi Temple" and "managing to get as far as the Second Atrium Lobby"
Star Wars Battlefront (2) game wiki provides some map and location description
and if you have time (and patience) you can watch gameplay from 501st Legion's mission in Jedi Temple for reference, like this one
youtube
The wookiepedia's articles should give enough good idea of the rooms, their location and functions, but I'm adding a few source pages:
STAR WARS: FACT FILES #36 provides a lot informations what and where was inside the Temple and some general data about visitors, security, Grand Balcony, Grand Corridor & Towers. Not all is super specific, but worth checking out for sure.
The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia mentions this:
and for Jedi Temple entry:
As for the named locations that are public or reserved for only temple residents, there is definitely a division like that, however I'm not sure if this issue was very well explained. The source gives us some ideas, like for example, Jedi Archives have data accessible only for Jedi with rank of Master or higher (thus most likely separated areas to study). At the same time, Fact Files #25 says that Jedi Archives offers an "excellent resources to researchers, including star-map hologram consoles", but also an access to entire scientific and historical knowledge of the Republic
so non-Jedi were allowed to use Jedi Library/Archives for their own research and work-related needs. We also must remember that the Jedi Order had various scientific branches, including archaeology, exploring unknown regions, and medicine, so logically thinking Jedi worked with other, non-Jedi specialists of many fields.
We also know from various sources, that politicians and important guests were invited for various occasions. We could see in Republic comics series that Bail Organa, Mon Mothma and senator Ask Aak were allowed to listen to Jedi reporting before High Council about his last battle
or attending Jedi Funeral like Duchess Satine and Padme Amidala did for the (fake) Obi-Wan's one or just visiting as a friend/comrade-in-arm
I would need to make more research about this issue as there is plenty tie-in material to Jedi Temple on Coruscant that would take a lot time to study, but at this moment, I think the best is assume how far a non-Jedi may walk into Temple will depend greatly who is that person and what is nature of their business with Jedi.
At the same time, Purge: Seconds to Die has this line "Clone Troopers? This deep in the Temple? Not permitted."
The Jedi was in Archives herself, so it is worth to take into account that clones could have more limited access to Temple than the average guest before war did. At the same time, clone troopers could make a report before Yoda and Mace Windu/High Council, as was presented by Star Wars Tales (Honor Bound):
so it is not like they were outright forbidden to enter the temple either.
Hope it will help!
#star wars#jedi temple#jedi culture#my replies#I'm pretty sure Star Wars Miniatures too had some maps for playing inside Jedi Temple#but sadly couldn't get any good images
A bit about Mandalorian Sigils
The “Star Wars Book - Expand your knowledge of a galaxy far far away” provides information that:
Mandalorian clans are often identified by shoulder signets denoting a worthy kill or conquest
The presented examples include
Mythosaur's skull - popular Mandalorian symbol
House Kast* - vexis (serpentine creature)
(Picture of Vexis from starwars.com's databank)
Clan Eldar - leonid
Clan of two: Din Djarin and the Child - mudhorn
(Picture of Mudhorn from starwars.com's databank)
and the peaceful sigil of Clan Vizsla used before Clone Wars
and used by Children of the Watch still years after Empire Fall
(source: The Mandalorian TV series)
while the actual sigil of Death Watch and Clan Vizsla is based on shriek-hawk:
(source: The Bounty Hunter Code: From the Files of Boba Fett)
(source: Jango Fett: Open Seasons)
(source: The Clone Wars TV animated series)
Vizsla clan has changed the animal sigil for a plant motif, most likely as a "proof" of change from warriors to the New Mandalorians. Interestingly, Jaster Mereel's characteristic mark also include an element that resembles a twig or an ear of grain
(on the right, color version from wookiepedia, on left - a Jango Fett's drawing included in the Bounty Hunter Code)
According to Jango:
"This was Jaster Mereel's sigil as a Journeyman Protector on Concord Dawn. I displayed it to honor him and to remind myself that you never know the heart of another. Always assume betrayal is just a moment away. You'll live longer." (source: Ba'jurne Kyr'tsad Mando'ad/Manifest Death Watch from Bounty Hunter Code)
As Protectors are part of New Mandalorians' Law enforcement agency, this is a second example of plant-like motif used as Mandalorian sigil. Which adds a new layer to the warriors (predator/dangerous animals) vs pacifists (plants) symbolism. At the same time, it is possible that other warrior clans changed their sigils to fit New Mandalorians' no violence policy (even if just to bid their time before they will strike again).
SIDENOTE:
[*] This sigil was presented in Star Wars Rebels TV animated series on Mandalorian Rook Warrior, below the concept art
#star wars#mandalorians#mandalorian culture#clan vizsla#i feel like mandalorians would like very much scyth animalistis art style
(Genuine question) but as someone who spends an inordinate amount of time on Wookiepedia, don't you ever feel like it'd be easierand definitely more enjoyable to just read or watch the damn thing (=the source material). Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you said you rather research stuff and aren't as familiar with the source material (which in case of Star Wars... Is a lot)
My brain is bad
#Phoenix answers asks#star wars#it took me three hours to watch a single 20min episode of TCW the last time i tried because i was too busy liveblogging#i can't turn it off
aw damn the absolute [redacted] who apparently [redacted] blocked me so they can't see the post I spent an hour researching and writing so sad
'I'm a law student too' [can't even properly define executive government or decentralisation]
'They are a decentralised organization [source?], they hire their own members and administer their own resources [hire??? interesting definition], but they work under the sanction and oversight of the galactic senate' hm. what would we call that. similar to a independent government body. oh, I know, PART OF THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT. so you agree??? 'The jedi will get in trouble if they act against the wishes of the senate' so you agree??? that they act under the authority of the senate? NOT LIKE AN NGO WOULD - I mean all a NGO has to do is not break the fucking law -
like look at this tomfoolery: 'The senate never had an executive branch until the coming of Palpatine, who got his special executive powers, back then the chancellor was more like the speaker of the house tan the "president" of the republic'
hm wookiepedia thinks otherwise, also the senate had executive and legislative powers: 'Additionally, the chancellor could issue executive orders, such as an order requiring a senator to leave the capital for security purposes'
#but hey I replied enough that they will no longer harass me with their horrendous replies! yipee#literally saying things like 'the jedi act under the authority of the senate' ah yeah babe that's called ACTING LIKE AN EXECUTIVE BRANCH#smh americans#rambles#normally I wouldn't be this petty but this person has 0 reading comprehension and blocked me after I defined decentralised correctly#probably too embarassed to be perceived
In wookiepedia, Piett's height is 1.73m
However, in star wars official database his height is 1.65m
Which one Pieder shipper usually follow?
And to muddy the waters further Colley has claimed to be 5'8 -doubts respectfully-
For my HC I have him at about 5'6ish. At one point I could have sworn I had sources that put Hamill at 5'7-8 (sources now seem to indicate 5'9) and I like the idea of Piett being just a smiddgeee shorter than Luke.
Here's the best ref we've got of Piett and Vader relative to one another:
Blue eyes?? blue eyes?? the only clear shot of Tan is a closed-eyed corpse, but the source (the movie with that shot in it) shows somehow that Tan's got blue eyes?? We cant see any eye color, we can't see what side of that brown hair the padawan braid was on- we don't even know if Tan was a blur with a blue saber or a green saber and just have to trust the explanation later that it was blue unlike the green promo pic, but you think blue eyes?? oh no hon. Tan never had eyes of any color, just like Tan never was really a padawan- only ever a dead child.
tan yuster wookiepedia page you will always be famous. to me.
#blue eyes???? SOURCE??????#unless its in the ep 3 novelization and Agen says something like Tan's eyes were as blue as the kyber then i dont believe you#but thats not whats sourced for that tidbit! the movie is! we don't see Tan's eyes in the movie HOW#anyway there is something else extremely funny about the page to me:#Tan's gender was lost in the retcon to legends#like Tan's legends page says he's a guy and uses he/him#but Tan's canon page places Tan in the 'characters of unknown gender' category and uses no pronouns at all for Tan#this kid. NO EYE COLOR NO pADAWAN BRAID NO PRONOUNS NO NOTHING#anyway. sw could change this. all i need is one flashback#They put Agen in comics but did he get any flashbacks to his padawan??? no??? FOR WHY????#show me Tannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn#put Tan in one of those prequels animated shorts about jedi temple life before the war come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn#me personally i think i'm a brown eyed tan truther#but i do gotta admit the draw of Agen cradling that bit of kyber and thinking its the same shade as his dead kid's eyes#hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm#anyway. love you corpse tied to retcon and a retcon-walking-corpse#alt text#i love youuuuuu tan yuster wookiepedia pageee botht he canons and the legends one. i love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu you will always be famous
hi, hope you’re doing well. somehow amongst dust is the first fic of yours ive stumbled upon and im absolutely in love with your writing, world building, portrayal of the tuskens, basically everything. my question is how do you balance engaging with fandom/ source material, and writing so much? sometimes i feel overwhelmed just scrolling wookiepedia, but playing with canon/legends is so damn fun and you do it masterfully!
Thank you so much! For me, I think, writing is basically 98% of how I approach any fandom, so the more I engage, the more I want to write. And with SW, given its very tiered sort of canon, I sort of....snip canon off into bits that fit the story I want to tell, which makes things more manageable. Like with amongst dust, I fell down a Tatooine rabbit hole in Wookiepedia and the old comics, but I didn't need to do a ton of research outside of that, since the story is contained to Tatooine. It makes it less overwhelming when I want to tackle canon if I approach it like I'm just intending to write a fic.
