summary: castiel vanished after all of the souls in his body destroyed him. reader has a dream in which, crowley helps her to find castiel. reader decides not to tell sam and dean right away and does research on her own. things get heated and she ends up having sex with castiel of course the boys find everything out!

another day another hunt. well at least that is what you wished for. castiel gave himself away to the souls from purgatory. unfortunately even though he showed a bit of sanity before he vanished with a huge explosion, it was too late. the souls took over his being and turned him into a monster.
you sat at the end of the bed, holding a glass of rum and sipped on it. tears rolled down your cheeks and there was no way of expressing how you felt right now. you shared a special bond to cas. no matter what was going he was always there. the two of you really grew together like soulmates and now he was just gone.
taking another sip, the alcohol made itself known by giving you a very warm feeling.
how could this possibly be happening right in front of your eyes?! how did you never get he was onto something with crowley and when you did it was already too late. you weren't able to get to him. his mind, his behavior and just he as a being changed. you didn't knew him anymore.
from sips you got to gulps, noticing how your head got heavy and your sight very dizzy. wiping the tears from your cheeks you heard voices and the door unlocking.
sam and dean told you to wait here and they were getting food. within the time they were gone you drank half a bottle of rum. the pain was simply too intense, it knocked you down. you had to get castiel back whatever it costs.
"y/n?!" dean called out, walking over to you and pushed your shoulder softly back so he was able to look into your face.
"leave me alone dean." you managed to slur and pushed his hand away. you placed the glass on the nightstand and grabbed the bottle itself. not being able to take one more sip, dean yanked the bottle out of your hand.
"what the hell?! are you serious y/n?! we all wished it would have went down differently, but it didn't! pull yourself together!" dean's voice got a bit louder, looking at you furiously. the only reason he reacted that way was, because he himself had a very hard time admitting to himself cas lied to all of you.
"guys!" sam warned the two of you and placed the food on the table.
"fuck off dean!" you stood up and pushed him back onto the wall.
dean's faced went completely dark and furious. not being able to even think what you just did he grabbed you, turning the two of you and now he was the one pushing you hard against the wall. he hold you there, looking right into your face.
"touch me like that, one more time and you won't again." he hissed right into your face.
not being able to answer, dean was pulled of by sam and he separated dean from you.
"what the hell you guys?! we definitely need to calm down!" sam's look switched from dean to you. "dean sit down and start eating." sam ordered and went over to you.
dean's face went completely blank in shock, realizing what he just did he rubbed his hands over his face and took a seat.
"are you okey y/n?" sam checked up on you and scanned your arms, face, chest and neck for any bruises.
you just nodded, pressing your lips together and looked up at him. "i'm sorry. i didn't mean to make any trouble. i just can't handle castiel's disappearance." you explained as best as you could.
"it's okey, we are all overwhelmed right now." sam pulled you into a warm hug and just held you for a few minutes.
you and sam sat to the table like dean and you kept your gaze down onto your lap.
"y/n i am sorry.." dean started, but you quickly interrupted him.
"it's okey. let's just forget about it and eat." you said and nibbled on a few fries.
silence filled the room and the three of you just sat there and ate. the life you lived seemed so out of order sometimes. one minute you're killing monsters and the other you're sitting in a motelroom, eating fries and life seemed normal. sam and dean talked about possible solutions, but you weren't able to join their conversation right now.
pushing yourself from the table you managed to tell them, you were doing your night routine. after you were done you got into bed and simply stared at the ceiling. it got so boring you apparently fell asleep. your night wasn't restful at all. nightmares hunted you down and you woke up completely sweaty. the boys were sleeping and you checked the clock.

you sighed and went into the bathroom, washing your face and then you walked to the fridge taking out a bottle of water. your stomach felt heavy and your head was in pain, at least it kept you busy.
crawling back into bed you couldn't help, but pray to cas like you did every night. finishing the little prayer in your head, your eyes flew shut and you fell asleep again.
"y/n?"" a soft voice spoke to you and stroke your cheek.
not wanting to wake up already you turned away, thinking it was one of the boys.
"y/n wake up" the voice got a bit louder.
tiredly you opend your eyes and sat up. after rubbing your eyes you finally got to see who woke you up.
castiel.
"cas!?" you couldn't believe what you saw an therefor you stood up and walked away form him until you hit a wall. "you're not castiel!!" you added and noticed the two beds beside yours were empty. "where are sam and dean?!"
"Bingo sweetheart!" cas spoke out and smirked. within seconds his appearance changed and crowley stood there.
you relaxed a bit, but were still obviously confused on what is happening.
"what do you want crowley?"
"mhm.." he pretended to really think of something, snapping his fingers, looking back at you. "i did all of this with cas. which means, i know where he is right now." a evil smirk formed against his lips.
your hands balled into fists. "shut your fucking mouth crowley!" you screamed out and ran over to him, knocking him down and holding the demon knife right at his throat.
his smirk didn't fade and he laid there in front of you and looked up at you. "did i just trigger a sensitive spot?" he asked teasingly and pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket. "go see yourself." he added and handed the piece of paper to you.
your grib loosened and you took the piece of paper in your hand. "why would you do that?" you looked at him, pure confusion written all over your face.
"those leviathans will grill our asses. we need everyone we can get and maybe even collaborate to shove their asses back into purgatory." crowley explained.
a strong hand gripped your shoulder and you could hear your name once again, loud and clear.
"y/n c'mon you can sleep in the car, we need to go!"
your surroundings changed with a snap and your eyes flew open, only to realize it was a dream you just had. in panic you searched for the piece of paper, crowley just handed you, ignoring sam which woke you up.
"woah woah y/n hey! are you okey?" sam grabbed your arms and held you still for a minute. he inspected you, raising an eyebrow.
your senses kicked in and you realize it was just a dream and calmed down. "yeah, sorry, i just had a very bad dream" you admitted to him.
"good, dean is already in the car waiting for us. we have a case. get ready and we will wait outside." he told you and left the motelroom.
confused on how real it felt you got up and followed sam's instructions. you took a quick shower, got ready and while packing the last pieces of clothing you noticed not just a piece of paper, but the piece of paper on your nightstand.
since you weren't sure if that was just a trap or real you decided to keep it to yourself. you went outside to the boys and got into the car. driving off, sam and dean were discussing the new case. you had your laptop on your lap and searched the address crowley handed to you.
"boys where are we going?" you questioned.
"illinois, danville" sam responded.
"would you mind stopping in fort wayne indiana? since we have a 7 hours drive ahead of us i think it will fit." you smiled softly at the two in the front.
"is there any reason for that?" sam questioned and you shook your head. "no, well maybe.." you admitted. "i have a old friend there which i'd love to visit?" it's not a complete lie. you thought to yourself.
dean agreed to your plan. the boys update you about the new case and it looked like you were hunting down some cursed objects. the ride itself was quiet and you took sam's offer and slept in the car. shortly before you arrived in fort wayne, you woke up.
you read the adress out to dean and you felt your tummy turn in anxiety. you weren't so sure anymore if it was a good idea to do so, but if it meant you'd have cas back, you were ready to pay every price.
"would you mind letting me out just a few blocks away?" you asked dean and prepared yourself, while stuffing the gun into your waistband.
"why would you need a gun?" dean asked suspicious and stopped the car on a side street.
"i always take a gun with me." you said and gave them a smile. "so i will call as soon as i am ready." crawling off the backseat you got out and closed the door.
the two of them drove off to a diner and you walked through the streets. it was the typical suburban life here. almost every house looked the same, the gardens were perfectly made and it seemed like the classic apple-pie-life.
you reached the needed house and it was light blue. it had white highlights and you walked the stairs up to the front door. looking around you, checking the surroundings once more and rang nervously the doorbell.
the door swung open and in front of you stood a woman. she wore her hair open, in curls and had a bright smile on her face. he eyes were sparkling and overall she had a very lovingly aura.
"hello! how may i help you?" she asked friendly and looked at you.
"uhm..hi!" you smiled awkwardly, because that caught you completely off guard. "i was looking for a friend actually and i thought he lives here." you tried to explain and looked at the piece of paper and back up to her.
"well what's his name?"
"you know what, i think i am completely wrong!" you excused yourself and tried to shrug it off, when all of a sudden castiel came up behind the woman. he placed on hand around her hip and smiled at you sweetly.
"is everything okey?" he asked looking at the two of you.
your face went completely blank and you had a hard time finding the right words. "uhm.." you stuttered.
"she was looking for a friend." his wife explained to him and looked over her shoulder to cas.
"i think you are here, because i can heal people?" cas added and looked back at you.
still not finding the right words you simply nodded like crazy and they let you in. cas and you went into the livingroom while his wife made tea.
"my name is emanuel" he said in a calming voice, holding his hand up to you.
"y/n" you said and shook his hand. it was so wrong coming here alone, you felt like you're going crazy.
cas pulled his hand aways quickly and looked at you in shock. it was clear something just happened, but you weren't sure what. you didn't know what was going on but when his wife came back you sat down.
emanuel held his gaze very suspicious on you while you were talking with his wife. she explained how the two of them met and how things went down since then. cas, well emanuel seemed to be a healer and his wife found him right after, he vanished in the water system. the confusion faded and you were able to piece the puzzle together. he forgot about what happened and now he's here, healing people, thinking he's a healer, when in real-life he's an angel.
"yeah so that is the story on how emanuel made his way into my life" his wife finished off and you smiled sadly. it broke your heart seeing them like that, when you wished it would be you and him. also the realization a life like that would never be possible for the two of you.
"how can i help you?" emanuel asked, breaking your spiral of thoughts and you placed the mug you held in your hand, back on the table.
"i don't need help actually" you confessed and gave them a smile. "i-i just hoped to find my friend here, but i think he must have moved." you nodded and your eyes wandered to cas again.
"we are very sorry, you didn't find your friend." his wife gave back and gently squeezed cas's hand.
"i should go." you said and got up. "may i use your restroom?" you asked. she brought you to the bathroom and you washed your hands with cold water. you took a moment and looked into the mirror.
"what am i supposed to do?!" you whispered and bit your lower lip. you thought for a second about it and a knock on the door distracted you.
"just a minute!" you called, drying your hands and opened the door to step out.
"i know who you are." cas spoke quietly and made sure his wife was still in the kitchen. "i heard you pray to me last night." he continued. "i am the friend you were looking for right?" he questioned you.
"we need to get out of here." you simply gave back. "tonight around 10 pm i will be in daneville, illinois" you looked at him and weren't sure what to do. you were unbelievable happy to see him but at the same time so much hate and frustration ran through your body. how was it even possible to feel such opposite feelings about a person at once?!
"we are in indiana!" he looked at you in disbelief.
"if you are the real c-, friend i am looking for you will find a way." you told him and turned your back to him. at the door his wife was waiting and you said your goodbyes. walking off.
dean texted you the address they were at and you walked over. you were glad it was about a 30 min walk since your head felt like it would explode. did you really just meet cas?! did he really remember you?! i would explain the expression he had, after touching your hand. you pinched yourself and made sure you weren't dreaming again.
until you arrived you were able to gather your thoughts. you prayed to yourself you didn't just start the next huge problem and hoped everything would go right for once.
you walked over to the table from the boys and let yourself fall on the chair.
"must have been exhausting?" dean asked.
"yeah kind of.." you laughed and shook your head. "but it was good to seem him again." you added and took deans coke, sipping it.
"is it someone we know?" sam asked wondering.
"not sure yet." you said and he gave you a confused look. you stole a few fries off his plate and you simply smiled at them.
the three of you payed and went back to the car driving off. several scenarios rushed through your mind of what could happen. cas seemed so pure hearted, just like back then when you first met him. it's like he got a reseted. a few hours later you arrived at the next motel and checked in with the boys.
"you're quiet" dean spoke up and broke the silence.
"congrats sherlok" you said back and let the bag fall onto your bed.
"thing's are rough right now. we should focus on the next steps." sam brought up and looked at the two of you.
"i fell like we should go into a bar and take one evening off." dean said and shrugged his shoulders. "i am so tired of this never ending bullshit. i might as well get drunk for once." he added.
you decline. "i'm fine thank's. i think i will get some more rest."
"well, i woun't let you go alone." sam looked at dean and raised an eyebrow. "you okey on your own?"
"sure" you nodded and took your gun out of your waistband. "baby always protects me."
the two of them left and now you sat there in the dark room on your own. checking the clock you got a bit nervous and your gun rested right next to you as well as your bag, which contained some other weapons in case anything should happen.
"castiel, if you can hear me, i am here. you can come. i am alone the boys are gone." you spoke hesitantly and looked around. a breeze made itself noticeable and you stood up, while checking the room.
"hello y/n" cas stood there in the middle of the room and looked at you.
your first instinct was to hug him and ask him so many questions, but you tried to play it cool and pulled yourself together.
"i see you found your second superpower"
"since you visited, i got a lot of flashbacks and i remember everything. well at least i think so." cas explained and looked around the hotelroom.
"we are alone" you confirmed to him.
"i also remember us y/n" he added quietly and stepped a bit closer.
you turned your back on him and looked onto the ground playing with your fingers. "uhm, a lot has happened castiel. you were about to destroy the world. i mean you did either way, but managed to send at least a few souls back to purgatory. i don't think what happened between us matters anymore." you added. the last words left your mouth as a whisper and you were holding your tears back.
"i know what i did. i know i've made a huge mistake, but everything i can do right now is help you and the boys fight what is about to come." you heard his voice closer and footsteps. "i can not forget about us y/n" whispering the last words against your shoulder he softly stroke along your armes until he reached your hands and turned you around.
the words just hit the right wounds and you pressed your lips together. not being able to talk right now you just wrapped your arms around his torso and held him close. he instantly hugged you against his body and placed a soft kiss on your hair.
"i am really sorry for what i did to you." he told you while placing his fingers on your chin, making you look into his eyes.
"show me" you whispered against his lips and your eyes still holding the very deep eye contact.
his hand slipped from your chin to your neck and he softly placed his lips onto yours. you closed your eyes and felt everything tingle in your body, especially your chest. moving your lips against his, your hands rested on his chest and stroke upwards. one hand burring into his hair and the other one wrapped around his neck.
cas bent further down to kiss you and his second hand rested on your hip. his fingers made their way under your shirt and his thumb gently stroke over your hipbone. a wave of heat overcame you, as you felt his hand against your bare skin. you pulled him even closer and deepened the kiss.
cas walked a few steps back with you, holding you safely against his body, until you hit the wall. he pressed you against the wall and his tongue liked along your bottom lip. surprised at his action a whimper escaped your lips and he used the possibility to enter your mouth with his tongue.
hungry for each other the two of you started to undress one another. one piece of clothing after the other fell to the floor leaving you in only your underwear and him in jeans and boxers. still pressing you against the wall his leg pressed against your legs and separated them. his tight rubbed against your sensitive center and you laid your head back against the wall.
"castiel.." needy you moaned out and looked at him with the hungriest look possible.
his lips fromed into a smirk and when you moaned out looking back at him his eyes changed from the known light blue to almost black since his pupils widened. "don't look at me with those eyes y/n" he warned you and started to kiss your neck.
you bit your lower lip and felt yourself getting more wet by every little touch from him on your skin. he lifted you up and threw you onto the bed. quickly undressing his last pieces of clothing, you joined him and got ride of your undies.

"well okey then. i just wanted to say that dean and i found a trace regarding our case and dean will be there any minute to get you."
not being able to answer, the door swung open and dean stood there. his face losing every bit of expression when he saw the two of you.
"what the hell?!" he looked from you to cas and back to you.
"y/n are you okey?" sam asked confused through the phone.
"u-u-uhm i can explain that!" you stuttered out. "it is-"
"it is not what it looks like?!" dean mimicking you he hit the door close and got closer. "well this better be a fucking good explanation y/n or this will be the last motelroom you see"
not being able to say anything you hear a peep on the other side of the phone and sam hung up. probably on his way here as well. meanwhile cas got up and protectively stood in front of you.
"dean calm down." cas told him.
"what the fuck is going on?! the two of you better be explaining this or i will literally freak out!" dean said glass clear and castiel started to explain the whole afternoon in detail. he added all side facts and pin points so dean would understand what went down. throughout the talk sam joined the two uninformed, got enlightened too.
"and then i came here to talk everything out with y/n, because she herself didn't knew what was going on. after that we-"
you cut castiel off and looked up to sam and dean. "sam called and well the rest you know!"
"i think you forgot a point y/n" castiel added and looked at you. you gave him the look and shook your head.
"hold on you.." sam started of and looked at dean, not being able to hide his shocked face.
"remember the pizza man?" castiel asked sam and dean.
you rubbed temples and inhaled deeply. "you guys can we just.." you started of and looked at sam and dean completely ashamed.
"yes please." dean pleaded and nodded quickly.
"anyone a shot?!" sam asked and literally everyone raised their hand. the three of you looked at cas in confusion and he simply shrugged his shoulders gave you a smile.

Chapter 14/?

They don't talk much after, the three of them still standing there, frozen, eyes glued to the place where the monster was burning thirty seconds ago.
Steve whispers out a question.
"Was it the .. what got Barb?"
"Yes, we believe so. It is also why Jonathan's brother went missing for a week right before Barb disappeared." Nancy answers quietly
"You can't talk about any of that with anyone." She adds
"Why not?"
"It's not that simple. Government is involved. Top secret research or something." Jonathan answers just as quietly
"Research ?? .. What kind of research is that ..?!"
"We are not sure."
Steve might ask a couple of follow-up questions later but right now he feels like he has reached his limit of absorbing new information for the time being.
They haven't moved from the same spot yet.
Steve's feeling a bit .. helpless. Like he needs some advice now, some guidance. What is he supposed to do with all of that?
"What do we do now?"
"You should definitely go home, Steve."
It's unfuckingbelievable. Nancy's major idea is still just for him to leave.
You know what, Steve might've been in love with her, but he's kinda glad it's over now cause the level of pressure? Constant disregard? Nancy sure is beautiful and smart and strong but Steve is so tired of her dismissive attitude
Since the imminent danger seems to be gone and everything is quiet, maybe it's really time for Steve to get going.
"Okay. I'm gonna go home. I guess."
He's reluctantly turning around and heading to the door when Jonathan speaks up
"We're gonna be right behind you. I'm bringing Nancy to her place."

Steve steps outside. The air is fresh and frosty. It feels nice after all the disgusting stench and the noxious smoke.
He's not wearing his jacket cause he left it in his car. He really thought the whole conversation that he'd been planning on having would take like .. five minutes.
It's January, but Steve doesn't feel cold.
In fact, he's unsure of what he's feeling right now. The adrenaline rush is only now starting to subdue, and Steve .. he needs ..
He honestly doesn't know anything anymore.
Steve gets into his beamer, starts the engine.
What is he gonna tell his mom?

Steve turns the car around, drives to the asphalt road and presses the gas pedal.
There's a little tremor in his fingers, so he grips the steering wheel tighter.
Maybe that's all just a super realistic dream.
Maybe he'll open his eyes soon and he'll be in his bed and he'll be like

And he would tell Tommy about that during lunch at school tomorrow and he'd be like

And they'll smoke under the bleachers and everything will be like it usually is, and the world is still gonna turn around its axis and be the same.

Steve's looking in the rear view mirror to check for the lights of Jonathan's car
He's not so sure he's gonna be able to watch any horrors any time soon

With every time it's easier for the car to run the beast over

Steve's getting out of the car not forgetting to grab the bat and looks at the
Oh my god
It's not .. it's not even a pile
Not anymore
It's not a body
Or anything anymore
It doesn't have any form
It's greyish slimy shapeless, seemingly without a huge amount of blood

Smeared on the asphalt
Practically leveled with the asphalt surface, like with a road roller
Steve hears the car approaching and turns around
The car stops
It's Byers' old ford galaxy. He and Nancy are opening the doors and
Steve's relieved to see them?
He's standing in the middle of the road in the beams of his smashed up BMW's bright headlights
"Steve, what is it?" Nancy's asking in disbelief
Steve wants to explain but somehow
He can't say a word
All sounds are stuck in his throat
Heart still trying to rip out of his chest
He's just looking at everything and still clutching the nail bat
Like a lifeline
He is ..
Jonathan is suddenly grabbing his shoulder
"Hey! Hey man, it's .."
Squeezing it.
"It's okay."
Steve wants to shrug Byers' hand off, he wants to run again, run the fuck away from here, wants to ..
Why did he ever decide to come to his house to fucking .. what?
Apologize ??
He also wants to laugh because it's insane
The world's insane
Who needs his apologies?
Who's gonna make everything alright now ??
He feels like screaming, it's too loud in his head, it's too fucking loud
He can't ..
Bear the screaming in his head.
Oh shit. There's another car coming, it's heading towards them, fast
"Is it .. the government?"
Steve's not sure if the question was only in his mind, or he actually voiced it
The car comes to a halt, and Steve sees now, it's the police, it's the Chief's truck
Is he supposed to be afraid of the police now, or are the police still good? He hasn't been filled in on all the rules of this new game yet.
Either way, Steve wants to .. confess.
When the Chief comes up to them, looking around and trying to understand the layout of the situation, Harrington starts blabbering
"I don't know .. I guess it was disoriented. Half-burnt. I didn't see it. It ran in front of my car. I couldn't stop. I didn't have time to stop. But it's also .. it's also .. it's not .. human."
Hopper gets on one knee and looks at the mess on the road. Steve shuts up.
There's a woman asking Byers questions.
The Chief looks up at Steve
"It's Harrington, right? Steve Harrington, the one from Loch Nora?"
He nods.
"Steve, do you hear yourself? You didn't run over a person, Steve. You ran over a dangerous monster."
Hopper is getting up.
"It has killed people before. It would've killed you, given the chance."
The woman comes up to Steve and hugs him. He doesn't hug her back or anything.
Who is she?
Oh, that's Mrs. Byers.
"Hello, Mrs. Byers."
"The poor boy is in shock." She addresses Hopper who continues with his speech
"You did good, kid. You did the only right thing in this situation. You've got nothing to blame yourself for. You did good, okay?"
Steve nods again.
He couldn't have possibly called an ambulance or something for .. the monster, really, could he? Tried saving its life? Let it go?
Like, he gets it. Why does he want to cry so bad then? Why is the world so scary? It wasn't perfect before but now there are also monsters and there's its blood on his hands ? If this kind of monster has any blood .. And on the wheels of his car, his car is totally fucked
"Do you have something to put on, Steve?"
Mrs. Byers' question makes him realize that he does, indeed, feel very cold
"Yeah .. in the backseat." Steve gets the jacket, zips it up. He only now notices that a January night is freezing.
"Alright, let's get this mess cleaned up then."
Hopper sighs and takes out two shovels from the trunk of his police truck. He hands one over to Jonathan and they scrape the monster's remains off the road putting it on a piece of tarpaulin.
While they are doing it, Steve overhears parts of a conversation
"Are you two out of your mind?"
"It could've come back for Will, for anyone, mom! You know how he's been lately!"
"All I've been saying and still am, you can't do something like that without telling the adults!You can't! What if it killed all of you?"
The sounds of metal scraping on the asphalt are harsh and grating
"I don't think it has any chance to come back to life, does it?" Nancy's speculating
"Don't think so, but uh .. it's better to be safe than sorry." - Nancy's comment makes Hopper reconsider something. - "Actually, we don't have to drag this body bag around."
He takes out a can of gasoline from the truck
That's an interesting range of tools the chief of police is keeping in his car
But Steve actually gets the idea why. Who knows how long such nasties have been running around Hawkins and Hooper has had to deal with this ghastly business.
"Let's do it right here, I don't think we'll be getting any company."
Jonathan helps Hopper to drag the tarpaulin to the side of the road. Chief generously pours gasoline over what's left of the monster's corpse, ties the tarpaulin up and again pours some liquid on the canvas.
He lights it up and
It's a jolly bonfire, hot and bright, sending sparks high up in the night air.
When it stops burning, there are only black ashes left, but Hopper stomps on them making sure nothing is left unburnt.
Steve's car has got massive dents - front bumper, the hood, the windshield is all fucked up, he has no idea why it still hasn't fallen to shards
It can still drive though, but the visibility is awful at night, especially when the windshield is all cracked. There's a patch of uncracked glass right on the drive's side, Steve will actually be able to see the road a bit.
"No, you can't get behind the wheel of that baby, Harrington. We'll tow it to your house."
Hopper digs around the trunk again and finds a towing rope. They attach it both to the police truck and the beamer.
Mrs. Byers hugs Steve again
"Thank you for saving them tonight."
And tells him to call if he needs anything. Their phone number is in the phone book every Hawkins household has.
Steve gets in the truck with Hopper, Mrs. Byers gets in her son's car and they set off in the same direction. The Chief is bringing Harrington to Loch Nora, and the Byers are driving Nancy to the neighbouring street.
The night doesn't seem to hold any more surprises.

Steve starts feeling jittery when he gets home and is left alone. He lies when Hopper asks him if his parents are home, yeah they must be sleeping already. He doesn't need any company. He's okay.
When Steve's inside the house, he makes sure to lock the door, runs upstairs to his room, locking its door as well, and gets on the floor near the bed waiting. The nail bat is lying near him.
No-one and nothing comes to get him. He sits like that through the night, unable to close his eyes for a second.
This is what you get for wanting to be fucking decent. For wanting to make up for your mistakes.
This is what you fucking get. Everything that you knew before becomes irrelevant, revealing one simple overwhelming truth -
No-one is safe. It's all an illusion.
Steve does get in bed close to six in the morning when the gray light starts creeping through the blinds. He shuts the heavy eyelids and falls into oblivion.
Steve doesn't wake up to to school.
When he opens his eyes, he's still feeling exhausted. The
This is crazy. The world is crazy. Everything is just so fucked up, it's crazy
is playing on repeat in his brain.
His parents are still away in Indianapolis, Steve remembers his mom told him something about staying there for the whole week.
At about four in the afternoon the front door bell rings, and Steve's contemplating whether to open it or not. If you think of it, monsters aren't gonna ring doorbells, right?
He opens the door, and there's Hopper, obviously, checking in on him
"Hey, kid. Just wanted to see how you are."
"I'm okay." Steve mumbles
"Where are your parents?"
"At work."
"I thought your mom doesn't work."
"Yeah, she's out uh .. shopping."
Technically he's not even lying. They might be doing these exact things at this exact moment, only not in Hawkins.
"Of course. You doing okay?"
"Yeah."
"Been to school?"
Steve scoffs.
"And what if I haven't?"
"It's fine, just don't make it a habit."
Steve's nodding.
"Steve. Life goes on, okay? I'm sorry you got involved in all of that. We can't spread gossip around but the people who are in on that, we can talk. Remember, I'm just a phonecall away.'
"Yeah. Good to know."
He actually means it.
"Alright. I'm gonna get going, just uh .. don't do anything stupid, and if anything, contact me right away. Deal?"
"You got it, Chief." Steve salutes him and closes the door.

He skips school next day as well. Doesn't go out of the house. Lingers by the windows, looking at the empty swimming pool and the bare woods around their yard, awaiting another monster. Sits around holding on to the bat, staring at the ceiling and the walls
Steve remembers that blood chilling horror freezing him up, when he saw the ceiling in the Byers' living room .. fucking sagging - sagging under someone's weight, under someone's bony limbs. The ceiling itself was turning from a solid substance into .. fabric through which terrible sharp claws were trying to scratch their way
To this world. That used to be safe.
So that's the Big Secret. The one that Nancy and Byers have been so quiet about all these months. Every time Steve felt that Nancy was hiding something from him -
All the little misunderstandings, all the lowered glances and subtle changes in moods and conversation topics
All the lies -
All of it was supposed to hide this abominable terrifying secret.
Now Steve knows too. He sort of wishes he didn't.
Steve doesn't come to school for three days straight.

On the third day he gets three phone calls.
First, it's Mom.
"I'm fine, mom, just got a slight cold.. No, I didn't go to school today because of it. When are you coming back? I uh .. I kinda miss you. Yeah .. Also, don't get mad. I got in an accident. I hit a deer with my car. Yes, I'm fine. The car's not. I'll take care of it, yeah .. No, I don't need dad's help, just uh .. with the bill, yeah. What? .. Oh, the deer ? Uhm .. it died, Mom."
Second, it's his ex-girlfriend.
"I'm okay, Nancy, just uh .. how often do these things come out from another dimension? Is it possible to predict when and where it's gonna happen? Would be nice to be given a heads up, you know. Yeah, I'm .. No, I remember I can't talk about it with anyone. Okay. Okay, it's not a good idea to speak about it on the phone. Alright, I understand !! I don't know when I'm gonna come to school."
Then it's Tommy.
"I'm fine, I'm just sick, man, it fucking sucks."
"You coming to school tomorrow? Teachers are wondering where you are. You're gonna get a detention for skipping school, you know that, right?"
Tommy, my man, what are you talking about? What fucking detention? Who cares ?? We're all gonna die ! There are monsters falling from attics and jumping in front of cars
"It's fine, I don't care."
"No, but seriously? You don't sound that sick."
Steve's rolling his eyes. Tommy is worse than his mother sometimes.
"Yeah, I'm gonna come tomorrow. Hey, can you pick me up in the morning? My car's fucked up."
"Your car is what?"
"Yeah I kinda crashed it."
"You crashed it?? How bad? You know what, I'm coming over!"
And before Steve can protest, Tommy hangs up.

"Yo dude that's bad. Your dad's gonna be mad." Tommy whistles looking at the state Steve's beamer in.
"He won't. It was an accident. Wasn't even my fault."
"What happened?"
"A deer. I was driving late at night, and the next thing I know, there's this big deer on the road, and I wasn't even given the chance to do anything. It jumped right under the wheels."
Tommy slides his palm over the shattered windshield and purses his lips, thinking
"Take it to Hargrove, they say dude's a wizard at fixing cars."
Hargrove?
"Nah." Harrington cringes
"Nah to what? To taking it to him or him being a wizard?"
"To both? I dunno."
Tommy's looking at Steve funny.
"Why not?"
Yeah, Steve? Why the hell not?
"I uh .. you know I don't like the jerk."
"Oh, come on, man. He's okay. He's actually very good with cars, gotta give him that. We can go together, I'll drive you back."
Tommy touches the windshield again and the whole thing comes crashing down on the dashboard.
Fucking hell
"Come on, Steve! Gotta get it fixed! How many days do you think I'm gonna drive your ass around for?"
"It hasn't even been one day, Tommy!"
"No, but am I picking you up before school tomorrow?"
"Yeah, okay."
Steve's flailing his hands in the air
"Whatever. Still don't understand why I have to take it to Hargrove. It's like we have only one repair shop in Hawkins." He keeps on grumbling
"Come on inside, I'm gonna get dressed."

Fanon Regulus, not Canon. This doesn't line up with anything canon! So please do not take this seriously.
- Did I say dating? I meant secretly dating.
- Regulus spotted you studying alone at a table in The Three Broomsticks, he just couldn't hide the part of him that felt an intriguing feeling towards you.
- He asked a few people around, nudging them and gesturing towards you, asking a small "who are they?"
- It took him a few days to finally get someone to answer him and once he knew your name, he knew he'd fallen into a rabbit hole. he couldn't stop thinking about you, his mind twirling around your name in a constant spiral.
- Luckily, you had been partnered with him for a potions assignment. he couldn't talk to you, he couldn't even mutter a "hi" he was so nervous.
- He had never felt this nervous feeling in his stomach, it was coming to the point it was drowning him.
- Finally, the next day during potions he was able to gain enough courage and actually talk to you about the project, though his voice sounded so mellow and drawn out, like honey.
- He didn't try to engage in conversation other than the assignment, so when you offered that you and him could go to the library and do a bit more research, he said yes almost immediately.
- You both decided to go after dinner since the library wasn't as filled in the evening.
- So when he came back to his dorm after eating, he tried to change into something more casual than his school uniform. it took him a good 15 minutes to pick what he deemed was fit for the occasion.
- He was just about ready to step out the door with his books until his dormmate said something that caught his interest.
- "you're meeting up with your potions partner, arent you?"
- "Yeah, why?'
- "Nothing, it's just their a mudblood, you shouldn't be hanging around those types of people"
- "oh... I didn't know they were a... mudblood"
- 'yeah, nasty they are. you should just ditch 'em"
- So regulus did, he ditched you. he felt guilty, leaving you all alone in the library. you must had thought he was another pureblood prick.
- His conclusion was right, you waited for a good thirty minutes for him. When you realized he wasn't coming, you just decided to do the whole project yourself, it was better if you could just get this stupid assignment done yourself so you'd both could go your separate ways.
- The next day when he got to potions class, he saw you pass in a report to Professor Slughorn. He felt his stomach drop, he knew well enough you had finished the assignment last night without him.
- After class, he caught up with you, pulling you aside as he watched you stare up at him blankly.
- "what?" you had asked him, a hand on your hip as you gave an annoyed sigh.
- "I'm sorry I ditched you, I just didn't know you were a... muggle-born" he admitted, looking anywhere but your eyes as he caught a few of Slytherin boys looking at the two of you.
- "whatever, Black"
- " you didn't have to do the whole assignment, I would have helped you."
- Your eyes met the Slytherin boys who were watching you both, you gave a pitiful frown.
- " don't worry about it, I get it. next time, just tell the professor you don't want to work with me. don't lead me on for a stupid joke"
- He didn't get to explain himself as he watched you walk away, he felt horrible. he had never felt this deep connection to someone before, it made his heart sink when he watched you turn the corner.
- A few months pass, he hadn't gotten another opportunity to talk to you again. he felt like an idiot, he had a chance and he completely blew it,
- Late at night, regulus would stare at his ceiling and dream about what would happen if he had just done what he wanted if he had gone to finish the assignment with you. You both would meet up, exchange dislikes and likes, talk about your dreams for the future.
- He couldn't focus on quidditch, it was coming more frequent of his team captain yelling at him.
- Luckily, he had gotten another opportunity to talk to you again. both of you were selected to be a part of the slug club. Regulus was going to say no, but when he heard your name get mentioned, he joined.
- The first dinner party of slug club, was like a dream. his eyes scanned over your outfit and how it looked absolutely pleasing on your body. his eyes kept siding over to where you sat and when you caught him, he would just look away.
- After a few more meetings, he was done with the 'whole looking away whenever you looked at him' ,  there were only a few more months of Hogwarts left. his eyes met yours and he didn't look away, he gave a smile.
- When you had smiled back, he couldn't help but smile a bit wider, his cheeks glowing with a red flame.
- The next meeting, you had sat next to him. it didn't take long until you both had been exchanging words and stories, laughing at jokes and giving each other shy looks.
- After a dinner meeting during slug club, Regulus offered to walk you back to your house common room. (if you are in Slytherin, then he would just walk with you till you both had to go separate ways to your dorm).
- Once you arrived at your destination, it was awkward. He looked anywhere but you, his face was hot with red as he began to get flustered.
- You had said a quiet goodbye, turning to head back to your dorm but he grabbed your hand. Holding you back as he stiffened up and asked you out.
- "will you go out with me? This weekend, it's a Hogsmeade trip, I'll pay." His words were hard, but his body language was a complete mess.
- "you're not gonna ditch me again are you?"
- "no, defiantly not ." His words had still been raw and hard, he felt like he was going to throw up butterflies.
- "I'm a muggle-born, I heard you purebloods don't really like us very much. This kind of seems like a set-up"
- God you hoped it wasn't a set-up, ever since you've sat next to regulus at the slug club meetings, he had stolen your heart.
- "It might become an issue for some... people, but it doesn't bother me much"
- Regulus was defiantly not good at phrasing things, especially romantic feelings.
- You didn't take his words too seriously, you debated for a minute. You wanted to go with him, it felt like every nerve was alive.
- "Alright, one date couldn't hurt" with your words, you leaned up to kiss his cheek.
- "goodnight Regulus" ... and then you had disappointed out of his view. Once you reached your dorm, you screamed into your pillow with excitement.
- The date went well, you both had gone to the three broomsticks sticks and sat at a table near the very back.
- You had talked about everything you could, Though he made sure to stay away from the conversation of his family. He didn't want to ruin the date by mentioning his pureblood supremacist family. It's sorta a mood killer.
- You both stayed out of busy spots, even hiding and giggling in a bush as his dorm mates passed.
- That was your first kiss with regulus, tangled in bushes and twigs as you heard footsteps fading. His lips were soft, his hand coming to rest on your cheek.
- When you pulled away, both of you were flushed and looking towards the soil. He walked you back to Hogwarts, separating ways.
- You both couldn't see each other often, only giving each other looks in class or exchanging waves when passing each other in the hallways.
- It was fine for a few months, though the secret meetings were stressful yet fun. You didn't want to hide anymore, which resulted in your first fight.
- "don't you get it? I can't be seen with you! I've told you about my family. They don't like muggle-borns, this Voldemort guy doesn't either and I can't risk exposing our relationship! You'll get hurt!"
- "I don't care if I get hurt Regulus! Our love shouldn't be hidden because your afraid of what people will think! I'm tired of this sneaking around, I'm sick of it!"
- The fighting continued for minutes, both exchanging hateful words. At one point he had said something very vial, saying he couldn't be seen with someone like yourself.
- "What is that suppose to mean?" You sneered at him, eyes tearing up as your arms crossed over your chest.
- "you know damn well what it means," he said back, quick and hard as he just glared down at you.
- You huffed, turning away as you wiped at your cheek. You turned back, shaking your head at him before disappearing out of the room.
- He stayed in the room for a while, thinking about everything. He was so angry, his veins were about to pop from frustration. He hated his family, he couldn't believe that he would lose the one he loved because of his ratchet mother and father.
- He went to Sirius, which was a first in forever. He explained everything to him, he told him how he was sneaking around with a muggle-born and how he didn't want to stop loving you.
- Sirius smirked, thinking he had finally gotten Regulus to betray their spoiled family. Sirius talked his ear off, telling him that he was glad he was gonna change himself and come join the hated family member club.
- Regulus didn't just want to leave the family, he wanted revenge.
- He disregarded Sirius, telling him to piss off and leave him alone for a while.
- The end of 6th year was coming up and Regulus wasn't given any chance to speak to you. He knew damn well you both hadn't separated, just fought. Though he laid in bed at night and worried so hard he thought his brain was gonna rot.
- On the train, he made sure to pull you into a compartment with just you and him. Shutting the blinds so no one will disturb you both.
- "Regulus I don't want to talk to you"
- "I can't meet with you or write to you all summer, I'm not putting up with this break anymore. I only have 2 hours with you and I'm not wasting it."
- "aren't you afraid you're gonna be spotted with me?" ... Regulus wasn't quite good at sarcasm (HA! As if) but he knew well enough from the tone of your voice that you weren't too happy.
- Regulus sighed hard, watching you look out the window as you played with the bottom of your shirt; tucking it in and out of your skirt/trousers (or whatever you're comfortable in).
- "I'm going to do something crazy over the summer break and I don't know if it's going to work but all I know is if I can protect you, I will."
- "regulus what are you talking about?" You asked, you felt worry build up in your stomach. You reached out, grabbing his hand.
- He instantly interlocked your fingers together, he moved to your side as he stared deep into your eyes. His eyes always looked so cold, but right now in this moment, they felt warm.
- "I love you, honestly, if I could marry you right now I would"
- He denied to speak about what he said before, he didn't give you any more information.
- Halfway through the ride, you had been positioned on his lap. His arms looped around your waist as his head rested in the crook of your neck. He let you play with his hands.
- " I love you too" you mumbled in the quiet atmosphere. Regulus held you tighter at the words.
- "hmm?" He hummed, wanting you to say those words again.
- " you told me you loved me, I didn't say it back. But I do love you regulus, I love all of you."
- Regulus felt himself smiling, he couldn't stop the wide grin as he nudged his head into yours lovingly.
- "I can't wait to see you after the summer break" you whispered to him, kissing his forehead as you felt the train start to slow down.
- Dread filled the empty spaces as you hugged each other as tight as possible, not wanting to let go.
- "it's alright, I'll see you after summer. I promise" he whispered into your ear, before bringing your lips to his and kissing one last time.
- The kiss felt like fireworks, there was so much longing and passion mixed into it you didn't want it to end.
- Sadly, the kiss ended and regulus soon disappeared in the crowd of people.
- That summer, regulus had gotten the death mark, he reeked of anger and emptiness. All he wanted was to see you again, to hold you in his arms and kiss you until you both couldn't breathe.
- He had gotten close to Voldemort, he played all the deatheaters with his fake words and praises. He had learned about Voldemort's Horcruxes.
- Regulus had sat at dinner, fork pressed into his hand as he thought hard. His love for you was so strong, he would kill for it.
- He counted down the days until summer break would end.
- 2 more weeks.... 13 days... 11 days... 8 days...
- On the 7th day before September 1st, his plan came to action. He would destroy Voldemort's Horcrux and defeat him and after, he would live 7th year in peace.
- Though his plans didn't come to a win. It stormed and rages of rain came upon him as he made his way to the cave. All he could hear was his heartbeat and the sound of rain outside, along with the padding of Kreacher feet.
- He could hear his breath, his eyes casting over every edge and dark spot. He smiled, he was going to do it, he was going to defeat Voldemort.
- "Whatever I say Kreacher, don't listen. Just keep feeding me the water"
- Kreacher grumbled, "of course, sir"
- "for you love, all for you" regulus whispered before dipping the shell into the crevasse, bringing it to his lips as he took a sip.
- Drinking the liquid felt like poison, regulus had to fight himself to not throw it up.
- The liquid was almost gone, but Kreacher had to take regulus place and force-feed him. Regulus was begging and thrashing, saying whatever came to mind.
- Regulus couldn't finish the drink, weird slimy skeletons climbed from the water surrounding them. Regulus was in a horrid state he couldn't even tell.
- When Kreacher finally force-feed him the last of it, regulus mind came to stillness. His limbs too weak, but he was able to understand that the weird-looking skeletons were not friends.
- "Kreacher, take the Horcrux and go! Hide it! Try anything to destroy it! Go!" He had yelled out, voice dry and strangled.
- Kreacher had to obey by request, he snapped his fingers and disappeared with the Horcrux.
- Regulus tried to fight, his wand shook in his hand as he casts spells after spells. It worked for a few minutes, but there was only one of him and so many of them.
- Regulus was pulled into the water, he kicked and thrashed in spite of trying to get loose. He couldn't swim even if he escaped, his eyes stared through the muddy water as his lungs filled with it.
- Regulus thought of you, your smile, the first time you kissed him, the way your hand fit in his so perfectly, the way you would send him kind eyes whenever he passed you in the halls.
- He sank, and of course his body was dead, but his mind was still there. He was barely conscious enough, but he was there. His body limp and rotten as the years pass.
- His disappearance travelled fast, you had heard first on the train.
- The first years had wondered why a a 7th year was weeping so bad that they couldn't even stand properly.
- You shook hard, gasping and not even trying to grab anything as you sank to the floor of the train. You couldn't care that people were giving you looks, your boyfriend was gone.
- Regulus was gone.

You haven't accepted a mission in 4 years.
You got out of the business and left those “friends” and “friend circles” behind you after you scored your dream internship. 4 years and you were running your own team and writing a semi successful blog. It was a quiet life, and you enjoyed it immensely. You liked your team members, and you felt they found you a fair and caring boss. Your cat Mr. Sparkles was a healthy weight and had finally committed to using the litter box.
You don't know why you answered when he called you, you don’t know why you agreed to such fuckery. But here you were pulling out a familiar black box out of the bottom of your cluttered closet. You picked it up and placed it on your bed. The dark colour contrasted with your bright and colourful décor. Something you found oddly reflective, once you moved on from that part of your life nothing was dark. Everything in your apartment was covered by color and patterns that made you happy.
You opened the box. You and Mr. Sparkles looked at the contents like there was a wild octopus about to come flying out of it.
“It was the right thing to do.” You said out loud. “And it's going to pay well.”
Pulling the tight outfit over your curves felt better than you thought it would. You figured that it would cause you panic or anxiety. You got up to the roof and plotted your course to the impossible house. You misstepped a couple of times before falling into your usual rhythm. You contemplated whether you were doing this because the small piece of art should be with the family it belongs too. Or if you were doing this because you had some kind of Ocean’s 11 complex that kept you hungry for such challenges. It was an impossible place to break into, the floor of the old house containing the art work was covered with laser security. A piece of knowledge that should make your stomach flip, but only makes your heart feel funny.
You got yourself into position on the roof of the low building that was across the street, you took a few minutes to survey and eventually came to the conclusion that conditions were perfect. You made your way to the 3rd floor balcony. You knew of the owner’s, an awfully cruel man and his lover. They were asleep on the 5th floor of the house. Well, city mansion? Whatever, the point is it didn't feel like a home, it felt like something a royal family would keep when they came to visit. Lots of expensive art and velvet curtains. Massive gold and crystal chandeliers hung from mirrored ceilings framed with fancy crown molding. You did your research in the few hours you had after the job request had come in, there was a - *insert super fancy techno security laser system name here.* And it was said to be unbeatable. No gymnast or other cat-like thief had been able to tango with it. You had been challenged by its precursors but had got out of the game by the time this puppy had made it out on the market.
You picked the lock on the double doors, and slid past the heavy curtains and disabled the basic alarm system for the floor. Surveying the area you saw the lasers slowly dancing like it was a Pink Floyd tribute at the local planetarium. (something you attend regularly) You took a deep breath and got ready to disco your way across the floor to the small framed painting of a sun set. You put a headphone in and set the song *put on a song you would rob a bank to*. You began the journey. People often felt that your size and shape made you incompetent or ungraceful. You learned early on in life not to listen to stupid people say stupid things. You were the best, perhaps because you weren't afraid to look stupid or ridiculous. You bended and snapped, ducked and dodged, twirled and flipped. And just like that you reached your target. The second you lifted it off the wall, the lasers stopped. You pulled your knife and twirled around ready for a fight. What you saw was not what you expected, across the room none other than Wade freaking Wilson was looking at you.. Normally you hated being stared at like that, but he was a “friend” you found particularly challenging to leave behind. The whites of his mask were wide. After making a whole bunch of strange gestures with his hands, he held up a finger motioning you to be quiet. He disappeared towards what you figured would be the staircase going up to the next floor. If he gave you a clear shot at an exit you knew he had trouble with him. So you took your out.
You got back up on the rooftop across the street, you grabbed the bag you left there and secured the painting. You pulled out a large black piece of cotton and tossed it around your shoulders like a shall. This made your outfit look less stealth and more passion for leather/night out on the town. Making your way down the fire escape on the side of the building you saw the target house explode.
I guess Wade hasn't changed any.
You picked up the pace feeling anxious to get to Sister Margrets. Making your way through the city unnoticed, you went into the shitty establishment through the alleyway door. You wasted no time moving through the hallway into the servers entrance spitting you out behind the bar. You kept by the entrance which kept you out of sight, you didn't want to see any more friends tonight. Weasel jumped when he turned around and saw you there looming in the shadows, spilling the drink he had just made.
“Fuck” He quickly remade the drink then moved back to where you were standing. He had a large envelope of cash for which you handed him the back pack. You felt slightly relieved.
“Hey I know you moved on, but thanks for this.”
“No problem”
You turned around and went out the way you came in. Opening the door that leads back to the alley way, you notice a very large and slightly singed body blocking your exit.
“Stay for a drink?” His voice caused something in you to stir. Something you were not going to explore.
“Sorry Wade but no can do” You pushed past him and began walking down the street.
“Pretty pleaseeeee” he said with a sing song voice. You tried not to smile. He caught up to you so he was walking beside you. “If your not a big drinker anymore we could go for diner, tacos!, Sushi, chicken nuggets, you always loved a good chicken nugget” You tuned him out as he kept chattering a list of every food he could remember eating together. You had to figure out somewhere to go as you weren't leading him back to your apartment. Going in random directions, he spoke up.
“I know you live on *Insert cute street name here*”
“What the fuck Wilson?”
“Well you disappeared and I wanted to make sure you weren't being unalived. This means if we head back to yours we can do take out and homemade drinks, which in my opinion is much better anyway. I make the best margaritas in the city.”
You started the walk back towards your apartment. Trying desperately to come up with a way to leave him at the front of the building. The thought of him in your very personal, very colourful, even bordering on childish apartment made you unbelievably anxious. Every time you looked over at his slightly charred body you couldn't help a strange feeling welling up inside you. You got to the front door to the building and turned to look up at him. There was a long pause as you struggled for words.
“It's alright. It was a nice walk.” You could hear the layers of sadness underneath his tone. You were going to tell him that it was a nice walk and that maybe one day when things were better for you they could get that drink. Then you were going to threaten him into keeping everything a secret.
“I don't have stuff for margaritas.” The wrong words left your mouth but for a fleeting moment you actually didn't want him to leave.
“Are you sure?” Hey sounded very serious which caught you off guard and confused you a little.
“Yeah, normally I just drink stuff out of a can” You were terrible at mixing drinks, they were always way too sweet and strong and lead to trouble. Wade gave a big laugh. “Are you okay to pick up the stuff if I get changed?”
“You betcha.” He did a twirl, blew you a kiss, then headed down the street.
You dashed up to your apartment and started to hide your more personal stuff. Grabbing an armful of clean laundry off the couch, tossing it into an empty bin in the closet. You were so busy trying to hide your stuffed animals and random fan art, that you didn't notice him standing in the fire escape landing looking at you from the large open window.
“Damn. This was not what I was expecting.” He said, sounding surprised. “This isn't what your old place looked like at all”
“Uh” Your face got hot and you refused to look at him. “I ah don't have people over so um yeah. You can go now.”
“Nonononononono. This is a huge bit of progress from everything being varying shades of grey and uncomfortable.” Wade took the place in as he made his way to your kitchen. Placing the big brown bags on the counter top, and sliding the blender out from against the bright backsplash.
"Uh I'm going to get cleaned up. Help yourself to everything." You ran into the bathroom and freshened up and were very grateful to be out of the leather and into your summer pj's. They were more on the revealing side but you never found Wade the type to care or be creepy.
Coming out you found him very comfortable whirling around the kitchen. It looked like he had made a giant frying pan of pad thai and the blender was full. Turning around to see you he picked you up and sat you on the counter top like you were nothing more than a bottle of the many sauces he currently had out. He handed you one of your favorite rainbow glasses filled with margarita. Your brain was still trying to calm down from him picking you up like that.
"Thanks" you said with an even redder face.
"No problem, hot stuff" he divided the food into two plates, you led him out to sit on the fire escape with you. It was a sacred space, it felt weird to be there with a real live person. After the most delicious plate of food ever, many drinks, and laughs about the good old days things quieted down leaving a thick tension between the two of you. You realized you owed him an apology of sorts.
"Wade, I'm sorry I didn't give you a proper goodbye. I just had a life of running and I couldn't risk anyone fucking me over again."
"It's alright babe. I understand why you did it." His voice was low and sad and it made your heart hurt. You didn't want the night to end.
"Thanks for keeping my place here a secret."
"No problem. Do you think mayyybe now that I know about your situation we could do this again sometime?"
"You have no idea how nice that would be." You really meant it having him around was the most fun you'd had in a very long time. You didn't have to pretend or beat around the bush about anything with Wade. Nothing was too dark or silly or messed up.
"Well I guess this is my cue." He made to stand up but you grabbed his knee without thinking.
"Uh if you want to. You could also stay for a while." He turned his head to the side, bright eyes looking you over. "You could take a shower and I've definitely got a shirt and some boxers I could lend you." His eyes got wider. "They're mine. They're really…. comfy…" you would never understand how he made you so embarrassed.
"Uh, not sure about that… it just…" he motioned to the rest of his body.
"I've seen your face. It won't bother me" you looked up at him with empathetic eyes, part of you hoping that maybe they came across as bedroom eyes. You gave yourself a mental slap.
"If you're uncomfortable, that's okay too." You said, giving him a kind smile. You could tell there was an internal battle. So you gave him a minute.
"Alright that sounds nice. It's a fucking mess under here tho."
You went into your bathroom and found your gentlest scent free soap and a soft towel. Then into your room to find a giant t-shirt and your biggest pair of boxer shorts.
You put it into a nice pile in the bathroom.
"Okay there's some nice soap, it's natural scent free, made of angel's tears or some shit and a clean towel and clothes in there for you."
Wade shifted around you into the bathroom. "Thanks"
You flopped onto your bed and looked up at your glow star collection that littered the ceiling. You heard the water start running and you closed your eyes. Until your herd some very loud and off key Britney Spears. You couldn't help but laugh. Soon enough he was out and flopped onto the bed next to you.
"Man this is the best sleepover ever."
"If this has been your best sleepover with a chick I feel sorry for you. And her." You joked.

another day has come to the end. you’re finally back in your room, sitting at your desk, trying to finish the work you didn’t finish from your classes.
you sigh. even after lighting all of the candles in your room, you’re still feeling unmotivated to continue your language work.
so you pull up your mythology textbook, and take a sneak peek at tomorrow’s topic: fairies.

reading on, you’re slowly feeling your eyes droop, tiredness flooding your system. before you know it, your eyes close and bring you to a quiet slumber.

you get up drowsily, trying to find the source of the disruption.
your candles are still lit, but it’s still dark outside, so it’s probably not morning yet. you turn around to grab the shawl you discarded on your bed, and put it on.
you reach out to close your window, but to your surprise, there’s a boy. sitting on the ledge of your window.

you’re in awe. from this angle, the moonlight shines just right for his beautiful wings to glisten as they flutter. 
you don’t realize, but you’re slowly walking towards him. your body gravitating towards the strange but stunning creature. 
he hears the floorboard creaking underneath your feet, and turns around to look at you.
you’re shocked by his appearance. 
he’s heavenly. his round, gentle doe eyes are iridescent, sparking while he’s staring at you. dainty, plump, parted lips, and a button nose. you’ve never seen anyone’s features as pretty as his. 
“oh, you are awake now.” his mouth turns upwards into a smile. you’re baffled. “i hope i was not the cause that woke you, how did you rest?”
the creature turns around and flies right next to you. you instinctively sit down on your bed, and he follows suit. 
“i-, i slept well?” you answered hesitantly. you check your watch discreetly, displaying the time, 1:35 am. the boy–or being, sitting besides you catches the action, and leans in to view the interesting gadget. 
he scares you a little bit, and you quickly scramble to put it back into your pocket. he looks at you with great curiosity.
you wonder if he’s ever been in contact with humans before.
“so uh, what is your name?” you try to strike up a conversation now that you know he is able to speak. 
“i do not really have one, but you can call me renjun.” he beams. “and you? what should i call a beautiful lady like yourself?”
you’re blushing with how polite, charming, and poised he is.

and that’s where it all began.

renjun came to your window every night when the moon comes at its brightest. it became part of your routine, and thankfully you didn’t have a roommate, so you stay up every night just talking to him.
for some reason, your lack of sleep did not affect you as much as you thought it would. the headmaster, teachers, maids, they always told students to get a full night’s rest so you’d be at your fullest learning capacity. but you’ve never felt better. you never asked what renjun was, it never came up during your late night discussions. you knew from his appearance that he was somewhat like a fairy, but you never asked him about anything, even though you were always curious. 
renjun’s sudden arrival into your life made you feel so bubbly and warm every single day. all of the girls in your class have noticed, so has your homeroom professor. 
“y/n! y/n!” they called to you during lunch break the day after your first encounter with renjun. “you seem so happy today even though we had an exam, what are you smiling so brightly about?”
you wanted to keep him as your little secret. so you just smugly smirked at them.
“none of your business.” you bite back before turning around to walk away.
they all squealed. 
“it’s a boy!”
“definitely a boy.”
“nothing else would be as exciting!”
whispers went around the classroom, and the girls were happily gossiping amongst themselves. your teacher even giggled a bit when she thought the class wasn’t looking. your classmates ask every single day, but you don’t cave. still pleased with the spectacle you’ve stirred up.
but it’s true, you’ve been much happier. strolling the school grounds with a skip in your step, a cheerful mood during class every day, and finishing your homework (renjun insists you do it before he visits so you are free to talk).
you’re so excited for your late night chats with him that you rush to your room to finish your work for the day. surprising all of your teachers of your newfound burst of productiveness.
you feel over the moon.
until he disappeared.

renjun stopped showing up at your window one day, out of the blue. no explanation, no nothing. it’s not like you had any other form of communication with him. so he completely went off the grid. leaving you by yourself.
for the first week, you didn’t accept that he just left. so like usual, you patiently waited for his arrival with the moon shining brightly.
but he never came. for weeks and weeks, you’d wait to no avail of his presence. 
you know he’s somewhere out there. somewhere far away. you want him back. 
your neighbours think you’re crazy. 
sitting at your open window, staring at the moon, and barely getting any sleep.
but they don’t understand. 
no one had ever listened to you as attentively as he did. no one cared to listen to you talk about your hopes and dreams, how your day went, what colour you found the prettiest (if you were wondering, it is green, renjun’s wings are a pretty light green), what pastries you enjoyed stuffing yourself with, your comfort book, no one. 
he’s all you have.
so like a hopeless, smitten, lovestruck girl, you sat quietly with the cold breeze blowing into your room at night from your window.

weeks go by, and you’re still waiting for his visits. at night, when the stars light up your room, you sit by yourself, talking to the moon. trying to get to him, in hopes he’s on the other side, talking to you too.
you’re feeling like you’re famous, the talk of the town.
your bright spirit you had before was gone, and you kept your head down at day. 
everyone was talking about how you got dumped, or got your heart broken by the boy you were head-over-heels for. they say you’ve gone mad; yeah, you’ve gone mad.
but they don’t know what you know.
‘cause when the sun goes down, someone’s talking back.

around 3 months later, you’re sitting at your desk, finishing work. you look up, and suddenly, the moon starts lighting up brighter, flashing.
you’re in disbelief, did the moon just, blink at you? 
then, a shadow of a figure with wings appears, and waves at you. 
that familiar figure, renjun.
was this renjun reassuring you that he hasn’t abandoned you? 
this ignites that spark inside of you. not thinking rationally anymore, no longer somber, you instantly get up to scramble to the window to sit down.
while you’re speaking, the moon blinks, as if he’s talking back.
so again, at night, when the stars light up your room, you sit by yourself, talking to the moon. trying to get to him.

until that stops too. 
the moon stops responding to you. no signs of anyone, and the moon looks more dull than before.
you wonder to yourself, “am i a fool, who sits alone, talking to the moon?”
you still stay up to mindlessly talk to the moon, in hopes he’s on the other side, talking to you too. does he ever hear you calling? ‘cause every night, you’re talking to the moon, still trying to get to him.

then, one night, you fall asleep again. 
trying to study for your project, your mythology textbook is still open. you don’t mean to, but school has been tiring, and you couldn’t help it.
but you wake up to the familiar tingling sensation on your arm. you open your eyes, and see renjun’s gaze on you. head rested on his hands, with his arms on your desk.
is this a dream? you feel faint. is this really happening? was he really in front of you? 
your eyes roam renjun’s face desperately. his eyes, his hair, his moles, his nose, those kissable lips. all the same like you remember.
“you’re awake.” he says. “i’m sorry i was gone for so long, i had some complications and was unable to travel.” 
renjun smiles, apologetically.
“i’ve missed you, sweetheart. how have you been?” 
your eyes zoom in on his lips.
“kiss me.” you blurt out before you can stop yourself. renjun seems surprised as well.
“sweetheart, are you sure you want th–” 
before he even finishes, you crash your lips onto his. 
they’re as soft as you imagined. his lips taste sweet, like the nectar of the beautiful flowers in your school gardens. 
he deepens the kiss, and you let him. feeling over the moon.
when the both of you pull away, things go back to normal. renjun is diligently listening to your rambles, and you’ve never felt better.
when the moon starts to disappear, you realize it’s time for him to go.
“you should probably go home.” you said, sadly. “you said you had some important things to do, so i must not distract you from your work.”
“oh sweetheart,” renjun chuckles. “but i’m already home.” he says with a eerie smile that makes you stop.
“pardon me?” you reply, slightly terrified by his change in tone.
“you heard me little human,” he licks his lips menacingly. you flinch when his hand travels up to your face to caress your cheek. “i’m already home.”
tears are flooding your eyes as renjun��s fingers grow longer into claws and he wraps them around your airway.
“you humans think you can just come into our homes and destroy our land, families, our lives.” he growls. “YOU TOOK EVERYTHING AWAY FROM US.” 
renjun screams, his hand forcing you to look at him. his eyes are no longer the soft doe ones you knew, filled with rage and hurt as he poured his emotions onto you.
“now we’re taking it back.” he snickers. “this stupid building you built upon our old home, it will be gone.”
his hand squeezes tighter on your neck and you’re quickly losing consciousness.
“and we’re starting with you.” renjun taunts, his normal hand coming up to your face to caress it again. 
“it’s a shame thought,” he shrugs, seemingly defeated. “i kinda liked you.”
he drops you on the floor, and you’re gone. 
tears still flowing out of your eyes as renjun walks out of your room.
“unlike the fairies, faeries are considered to be evil, horrid, and mischievous creatures. the faeries are evil, unfriendly, and cruel spirits. the faeries are a bit dangerous also. humanity destroying most of their lives, they seek revenge to take back what once was theirs.”

Could you please write some Headcanons for how Link, Zelda, Sidon and Revali (Age of Calamity timeline for Sidon btw) would react to a young woman who has a very strong connection to the Spirits being sent to teach Zelda how to unlock her power? Like it's a young woman, around 18 years old, who has a natural ability to communicate with all manner of Spirits, maybe even is part Spirit in some way, so she gets appointed by the King of Hyrule to teach Zelda how to do the same? And maybe she's super nice and excited too? Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!!

Let's set the scene, yeah?
You were one of the descendants of Hylia from centuries past, now a ghost in the afterlife as part of the universe itself.
Naturally, you would be surprised when you became sentient once more and blinked open your eyes in the middle of Hyrule Field. In your head rang a soothing voice that you both heard in your head and felt in your bones. In an instant, you knew it was Hylia communicating with your physical form again after years of dormant sleep.
The voice instructed that you were to aid Zelda in her studies of connecting to her powers. Hylia could not intervene directly with Zelda, of course, but the most the Goddess could do was send someone in her place. And that was you: a descendant of Hylia's own bloodline resurrected from the dead come to help the princess in her efforts. Easy enough, right?
Convincing the King and his guards of the situation was difficult, let alone trying to get him to allow you to assist his precious daughter with her practice. The only proof that you had of any story that you told were the markings on your hands and chest.
Three distinct triangles etched themselves on your body: one on the back of each hand and the third on your chest. Your powers had long since been passed on to the next descendant of Hylia, but you were still full of the knowledge of how to use Hylia's gift and how to communicate with the spirits.

Link
Link was wary of you at first, being the princess's appointed knight and all, but he soon figured that you weren't as much of a threat as he initially thought
You were kind and excited to meet someone else who also held Hylia's gift (albeit not necessarily awakened, but still) and Link knew that Zelda would be safe in your hands
While going on spiritual treks with Zelda and Link, you almost always made the meals because both Zelda and Link can't really cook lmao
Coming from an entirely different era, you had a big book of recipes in your head that you brought into reality with every meal you made, and Link definitely wasn't complaining
He appreciated your wide breadth of knowledge of different foods, plants, and wildlife that you might encounter on your travels
It made planning protective measures for the princess all the easier
Sometimes the ventures to connect to Hylia didn't bear any fruit (and that's okay because the gift takes plenty of patience!) and the mood could become solemn quickly
But you were always determined to lift the mood and lighten everyone's attitude, and it always worked!
You would excitedly ramble off stories about where you grew up or what you liked to do on your own travels back in the day, and it would always make Link feel warm that you had such fond memories you were willing to share with him
When Zelda needed time to herself to try to connect to the spirits and Hylia, you and Link would hang around each other and bond
Link would listen attentively as you talked about the cultural and time differences between your world and this one, sharing sympathy when you expressed nostalgia over your time lost
But you would quickly turn it around to the positives, which is what Link thought was a wonderful quality that you had
If you ever got caught off guard while on ventures by the Yiga Clan or rogue animals, Link would fight just as hard as he would in larger battles to keep you safe
Over the time you spent together, Link grew very fond of you and always was at your side if he wasn't immediately attending to the princess
Once your guidance and knowledge finally broke through to Zelda and her power awakened, Link was so proud of you for fulfilling your duty
He was worried that you would disappear from his life once you completed Hylia's task, but you connected to the spirits after the fact and bargained with them
At the end of it all, you were able to live your life through again with Link by your side :)

Zelda
Goddess was Zelda relieved when she found out that she would be having a guide to help her unlock her powers
Upon meeting you, she was absolutely floored with your kindness and willingness to help her with her problems
You were a wonderful mentor to Zelda, teaching her things about the different spirits and how to harness the power that she never would have dreamed of researching on her own
And wow there was a lot of information HAHA
Zelda was also transfixed with the fact that you came from another lifetime, and you were more than happy to tell her all about your life before this one
She would also take very detailed notes about everything you said, enamored with the way you spoke and how excited you got about things you loved
Quiet study time in Zelda's room would often turn into challenges of you trying to make her laugh with small tidbits of stupid stunts you would pull
Of course Zelda couldn't hold back a smile when you were around, so the challenges would fall short but with you falling into fits of laughter
You always brightened Zelda's mood whenever she was down about a failed connection attempt, urging her to try more and be patient with herself
Zelda was thankful to Hylia for sending you because honestly she wouldn't know what to do without someone that was as kind and generous as you were with spreading knowledge about your gifts
And when they finally awakened, Zelda couldn't be more happy!
Hyrule was now safe with Zelda's power awakened and Ganon on the edge of being sealed away
She pleaded that you find a way to stay in her time and teach her more about the spirits and Hylia herself
Your heart warmed at the thought that someone wanted you to stay, and it warmed even more at the fact that someone loved you enough to want to keep you forever :)

Sidon
Sidon met you when he was summoned with the other Champion successors
You were the first to greet him and explain what had happened with the time jumping and all that, and you helped to put his nerves at ease
His own excitable and boisterous personality bounced off of your own energy and buzz!
Fighting side by side with you, Sidon admired how you always had a strategy and were looking out for Zelda as if she was your own sister
He was surprised upon learning your story: never had he known that Hylia had the power like that to bring someone back to help those in the present
Sidon tried his best to stay by your side whenever he could, wanting to keep your blind spots covered just in case
In your time, you had known the Zora and actually knew King Dorephan when he was a young little guppy, and your stories of Dorephan never failed to make Sidon laugh
Sidon in turn shared his own tales of the evolved Zora Domain, and you found his storytelling absolutely captivating
Sidon felt a pull to you like he had to no one else before, and he nurtured that pull with his own heart
He made sure you had enough supplies, checked in on you immediately when you came back from a far off mission
Just an all around softie I think! Sidon has always been caring like that :)
When it was time for him to go back, you discovered a way that you could jump with him back to his own time
After all, your mission with Zelda from Hylia was over. Why shouldn't you be able to live your life through again?
You jumped back with Sidon to a world vastly different than the one you had just been in, and even more different than the one you were born into
But with Sidon, it always felt like home!

Revali
Revali didn't want to be impressed, but he was Definitely Impressed
Your composure about the whole situation was amazing, and you handled all the questions everyone had with grace
And your kindness was overwhelming (in a good way) with the fact that you opened your mind to such possibilities of even being resurrected like that
Revali admired you through and through
He would be incessantly curious about what the afterlife was like, how the spirits communicated with you, what Hylia was like
You, of course, couldn't accurately answer most questions because, well, you couldn't remember, but you appreciated his desire to learn
You loved the way that he fought: with purpose and intent. There was little to no hesitation with Revali, he always had a plan
When you would go to treks with Zelda and Link to try to summon Zelda's power, Revali would make comments here and there insisting that he tag along just in case
Poor Rito really just wanted to spend more time with you, that's all!
If he did tag along, it would be to Lanayru with his knowledge of the cold weather
He would rattle off safety facts of mountain weather and gear you would need, and you would be happy to listen as long as he was talking to you
Revali would also love to hear about your old life, and since you could go on for hours about it all, he would sit and absorb everything that came out of your mouth
He was smitten in a matter of weeks!
He could see the care and sympathy you had for Zelda as she struggled and triumphed in her process of opening her powers, and he appreciated that you could care so much for someone like that
Revali subconsciously protected you even if there was a leaf that fell in the way of your path, as he was always on alert in case someone caught you off guard
As your time came to a close and Zelda awakened her powers, Revali demanded that you stay (with love, of course)
And stay you did, making a bargain with the spirits and living the rest of your second life in the company of the Rito warrior :)

A/N: my first Nanami fic!!! I love him so much. Just a simple one-shot about rekindling your love after being apart with a fluffy ending. Yes, the title is an ABBA reference, no I will not be taking any questions on it at this time. If you'd like to read this on AO3 then you can here otherwise the fic is below the cut. I’m lucky that I came back during the spring, you thought to yourself, as you meandered around campus. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and pink petals danced around your ankles with every step. Even the scent infused itself into the air, carrying a bittersweet undertone to it as you reminisced about your time here as a student. The sound of chalk on the board; the feel of the grass against your cheek as you hit the ground during training; the look on Nanami’s face when he rejected you and this world. It had been spring then too.
“You’re here!” trust Gojo to spoil a melancholy moment. You rolled your eyes playfully, accepting the hair ruffling from your upperclassman with weak jabs back at him.
“Gojo, stop” you laughed “we’re not kids anymore.”
“Says who?” he pulled away, adjusting the black blindfold over his eyes “you still look the same.” He teased, patting your head for emphasis. You still came up a whole head shorter than him and then some.
“You don’t” you retorted “you look old. What are you, like 40?”
“What?! You know I’m not” he whined. He was so easy to wind up sometimes. You half listened to him as he complained to you, citing his skin care routine and the regular comments he got about how youthful he looked before nudging him teasingly. The two of you walked back down the path towards the main building, feeling the nostalgia seep into your bones softly.
“You really haven’t changed” you said with a smirk “still vain as ever.”
“And you’re still as sharp tongued as ever.” He sighed, putting an arm around you “still. I’m glad you’re back. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to throw a party.”
“You’re a lightweight, Gojo” you said, remembering the time he had snuck in vodka during the winter of his final year. He had wanted to show off and ended up throwing up after two shots, before he passed out in the same pile of vomit. He had never snuck in alcohol again.
“You’re not, I remember you and Nanami having a drinking contest one time.”
“It wasn’t a drinking contest. We were just having wine and cheese. It was a very civilised affair.”
“You must have done a lot of that kind of thing in Europe.”
“Not really” you shrugged “it’s not really something to do when you’re alone.” You didn’t mean to sound so sad, but it wasn’t easy to hide, especially from a man with Six Eyes. You were glad he didn’t press you on it, instead opting to blabber on about how great his new first year students were, and his unmatched skill as a teacher. Gojo always seemed to walk the line between being insufferable and incredible. Nanami had often winced whenever he heard Gojo start a new tangent, and you would rub his back reassuringly. It became an unspoken gesture between the two of you. When you’d failed at mastering a new cursed technique, Nanami would be there to hand you a tissue for your bloodied nose and rub soothing circles on your back. Maybe that’s why your final moment together was so sad. You’d told him you loved him, and he told you that he wanted nothing to do with sorcery in exchange for a normal, human life. He’d left you crying, and the absence of his palm on your back made you feel colder and more alone than ever.
“…so the official party is at 7 but the real party will start after. Are you listening?”
“Official party at 7. Real party after.” You repeated “I’ll wear something that can suit both.”
You had wanted to ask Gojo if Nanami was going to be there, but you held your tongue instead. You hadn’t heard anything from him after you two had split ways, with him becoming a salary man and you going abroad to conduct research. You already knew that if you asked, you’d be met with disappointment. Still, perhaps it was better this way. You might actually be able to relax tonight and remember what social interaction felt like. You wouldn’t have to worry about what to say if you saw him there, or overthink the black dress you were planning on wearing tonight. You’d heard that even Utahime was going to be there. You owed it to everyone making an effort for you, to be present and gracious.
The nerves were still there of course. You were happy to see the small collection of former classmates and teachers there, and excited to catch up. It was strange to think of how close you all were once and then you’d left and avoided talking to anyone beyond a few words at a time. Now, the bonds between you were a little rusty but still strong. It calmed the butterflies in your stomach to know that everyone still accepted you, though Utahime scolded you for it. Your eyes kept lingering at the door, in anticipation of him entering the room with a curt apology about his lateness but then you’d catch yourself and internally reprimand your actions.
“You’ve always been too tough on yourself” Utahime said, sipping her tea knowingly.
“Sorry” you apologised lamely, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear.
She huffed at you “stop apologising, it’s not your fault that men are idiots.” She eyed Gojo, who was trying to impersonate Yoshinobu, and sighed deeply. It made you smile.
“Thanks” you wanted to say something more but the lack of social interaction over the many years constricted your words. You didn’t even know what to say, let alone how to physically say it. Utahime didn’t mind however and squeezed your shoulder.
“God, I can’t stand him” she said, pinching the skin between her eyebrows. You turned to see Gojo laughing obnoxiously at something.
“Still single too, I presume” you said.
“You know he could never be tied down and imagine that poor woman” she groaned “it’s best he stays single. Imagine if he procreated.” She shuddered, making you laugh.
Ieri joined the two of you, shaking her head at her co-worker’s antics “I’m glad you’re back” she said to you “being a woman in this line of work is hard enough, and then you have to deal with that.”
You smiled “I’m glad to be back, even if it’s a little hard sometimes.”
“You know” Ieri looked down at her drink that she had spiked “wounds take time to heal and it’s important to cover them, but you also have to take the bandages off at some point and let it breathe.”
“You’re wise as ever Ieri” you said.
“Hmmm I don’t think so” Utahime said, frowning “if she was so ‘wise’ then she’d quit smoking.” It prompted a whole conversation, part jokes, part argument between the two and then Gojo stepped in to see what was happening which led to him being verbally bullied by the two women as you watched on and laughed.
“You’re all being so mean to me considering I planned this party” Gojo said, mock snivelling “and the after party.”
“That’s true” you said, perking Gojo up instantly “thank you for inviting everyone.”
“We’re not done yet” he said, bringing a corner of his blindfold down to wink at you.
The after party was more chaotic than you had envisioned. Despite not drinking anything, Gojo still managed to scream-sing the lyrics to every song into the karaoke microphone, sometimes even trying to elongate certain sounds in an attempt to emulate Mariah Carey. Needless to say, Utahime was so irritated that she agreed to join Ieri outside while she smoked. You wandered over to the bar and pouring a generous amount of wine into your glass, feeling warm and happy for the first time in a long time. Of course, you knew that it was the alcohol primarily, but it had also been so long since you’d had fun. You were going to allow yourself to enjoy it.
“Didn’t you think I was soulful?” Gojo asked, his grin wide and satisfied like the Cheshire cat.
“Very” you said, watching out the corner of his eye as he poured himself a coke triumphantly “I didn’t even know some of those notes existed.”
He shrugged mock casually “sometimes it’s a curse to be so blessed.” You two continued to talk, laughing at the ridiculous things Gojo said as he sat on the bar stool next to you, leaning casually against the bar. He sat up quickly at one point, looking past you with rapt attention.
“What is it, boy?” you jokingly asked and when he didn’t answer quickly enough you turned to look behind you. There, standing cautiously at the door in a jacket and tie was Nanami.
“Finally,” you heard Gojo murmur but when you turned back to confront him, he had disappeared into thin air. You felt afraid to turn, knowing that Nanami had probably seen you. You felt your heart race in your chest. He was here. This wasn’t a dream or your imagination. The wine made your legs feel weak and shaky as you clumsily stood, pressing your hands down your dress to smooth it out. Your palms felt clammy as you did so. Downing the remainder of the wine in your glass was attractive, but you could already feel his presence near you.
“Nanami” you breathed out, swallowing nervously as you looked up at him. You had often thought about what would happen if you met again and you’d played the scenario in so many ways; one where you were cool and calm, another where you cracked a killer one liner; even one where you’d pull him in for a kiss that would ignite the flames of your relationship. Instead, you felt your nerves shoot through your body and you felt like a mess.
“Your hair” you said lamely, reaching a hand up before stopping yourself and letting your fingers curl into your palm in shame “it’s different.”
“Yes” he seemed taken aback by your sudden note on his appearance “I changed it a while ago.”
“It looks nice” you said, feeling warmth flood your cheeks at your pathetic comment “it suits you.” This wasn’t a lie. The shorter cut emphasised the sharpness of his cheekbones, which looked lethal in the dimmed lighting. He was taller too, if only by a little, and broader as well. You hadn’t anticipated that he’d look better after all this time. It made it hard to think coherently.
“Thank you” he said, “you look well too.” Disappointment already tinged in your stomach. He was just as strict with his feelings now as ever before. You both stood there awkwardly for a couple of seconds, wanting to speak and yet not at the same time.
“How’s normal life working out for you?” You asked, hoping your jovial tone would make things less tense.
“Oh. Well, it didn’t” he said, taking a seat on the barstool and pouring himself a glass of wine to join you “I tried to do it, but I couldn’t. Work is shit.”
Your surprised both you and he when you laughed “and what? This is the height of luxury?”
He smiled into his glass “no, it’s shit, as well but at least I’m better at it.” He raised his glass to you to clink “to this sorcery shit.” You smiled too, eagerly charging your glass to meet his. You watched him sip, allowing yourself to really look at him. Your eyes traced over his profile, drinking in the angles of his jawline and the elegant slope of his nose.
“I’m sure Europe was better” he said, making you snap out of your daze “at the very least, the food must have been delicious.”
“Oh, yeah” you said inattentively, thinking about evenings in foreign capitals where you fell asleep over your work with a half empty bowl of ramen next to you.
“It was interesting, and I learned a lot” you said, repeating what you had told everyone “I’m glad I’m home though.” You looked at him to gauge his reaction. His face was impassive as stone as he nodded. Dejected, you swirled the liquid around your glass, unsure of how to proceed.
“You were so adamant about leaving” you found yourself saying, the wine loosening your tongue “I’d never seen you so determined about something before.”
“I thought I knew everything back then” he sighed “I was so sure that I’d turn my back on this and work hard to maintain a normal life with a stable job, and money, and a family to provide for.”
You felt stunned “I didn’t know you wanted a wife and kids.”
He smiled without humour “well, something like that.” You watched wordlessly as he emptied the glass down his throat.
“I guess this line of work makes it hard to have those kinds of things.” You could picture Nanami in your head, in a dark suit and tie as he kissed his wife and child goodbye before going to work. He’d probably be good at it too. Firm but caring as he helped his child with their maths homework or opened a jar for his wife who would cook dinner for him every night. He’d dote on his family too, taking them to the beach and up the mountains or abroad. He’d probably keep a picture of them on his desk at work too. It pained you that he felt he couldn’t have that; let alone that you could never give him that.
He turned to look at you “well that and I knew I couldn’t tie you down like that.”
“Me?” you couldn’t have hidden your shock if you tried.
“You wanted a career” he said plainly “one that involved research into cursed objects and continuing to improve your skills and techniques. I didn’t want to take that away from you.”
“You didn’t even give me a choice” your throat felt hoarse as you grappled with this new truth “you just made that decision for me.” You stood up, feeling woozy on your tipsy legs but determined all the same to get away. You needed air, and the chance to absorb everything you’d heard. All these years you’d assumed he felt nothing for you, and you’d been so embarrassed and upset that you put yourself in self-exile because of it.
“Would you have gone with me if I asked?” he said, following you up the stairs and out of the basement of the bar. The night air was cold and crisp against your hot body.
“Would you really have given up everything because of me?”
“I did give up everything because of you.” You said, turning to clutch the sleeve of his beige blazer, feeling your heart palpitate as your knuckle brushed the skin of his hand. Tears pricked your eyes and you looked down, feeling the rush of emotions you had kept chained away in the shadows rear its head into the light.
“I’m sorry I realised it all too late” he said, and before you could think he had pulled you into a tight embrace. You fought against him at first, wanting to be angry with him for assuming things on your behalf and making you suffer so miserably for so long, but you couldn’t. You gave in, letting your tears blot onto his rich blue shirt. His tie tickled your cheek as he let you press your face into his chest like you used to. His hand automatically began to take small, gentle laps on your back. He whispered his apologies over and over again, finally pressing a tender kiss on the top of your head.
“Nanami” you mumbled, pulling away so you could look up at him. His eyes were piercing as they regarded you. One of his hands remained on your back, whilst the other came up to cup your cheek fondly.
“I love you” he said quietly, pink appearing in his cheeks as he admitted it to you “and I hope it’s not too late to say it, however I’d understand if you didn’t feel the same. I was awful to you.” He opened his mouth to say something else but stopped when you pressed a finger against his soft lips.
“Kento” you said, tasting the way his name sounded for the first time “I love you too.” He took it as permission to lean down, capturing your lips against his in a kiss that you had been dreaming of since you’d met. He was still cautious as always, not wanting to push you too much, but you couldn’t help but enthusiastically pull him closer, standing on the tips of your toes to be closer to him. You shivered when he opened his mouth to take your bottom lip between his own, sucking on the plump skin as you felt a whisper of wind snake around the two of you, depositing fallen petals on your shoulders like confetti.

Chapter 1
Here is the first chapter, please let me know what you guys think! Warnings: Anxiety Attack, mentions of SA
There was not a night, in which the shadowsinger did not wake up sweating after his night terrors. It had become a routine for him, to see the flames in his dreams, to see the smiles and dark eyes of his so-called brothers while they laughed at his pain. At first, he would find ways to comfort himself, he would read, pray to the Mother, and even journal (a suggestion given to him by his blonde friend). However, after the years passed, and his nightmares did not disappear, he had come to realize that the nightmare was a punishment from the cauldron. The scars, the nightmares, the fact that he did not have a mate; it was all a punishment for the horrors that he had committed. So he accepted the nightmares, he accepted the scars, the accepted the loneliness, he accepted the punishment Azriel rolled over the bed, taking off the sheets that had covered his body; and sat at the edge of the bed. He took a couple of seconds to look around his room. Five... the grey walls, the black wooden desk, the leather chair in front of the fireplace, the basket of dirty clothes, and the book that the priestess had let him borrowed. Four... the satin sheets on his bed, the trim curls on his head, the fleece black pants he wore, and the wooden decorations that surrounded his bed. Three... the chirping of birds in the morning, faint music from Velaris, and the sound of trees moving with the wind. Two... whiskey and roses. One... the taste of the chocolate pudding the house had given him the night before. He exhaled as his mind acknowledged reality. Sometimes, when the nightmares were too real; he woke up afraid to be in that cell... prison that his childhood self had called home. He stood, looking for his fighting leaders as he got ready to go to the training ring. Maybe the day ahead was not going to be bad, maybe something good might happen. Maybe, a certain auburn-haired priestess would be there. -.-.-.-.- The sun was just rising, the cold autumn wind tickled his wings as he flew up the house of wind. As if she had guessed he wanted to see her this morning; Gywn moved with gracious velocity while she tried the new obstacle arrangement that was meant for that morning. Azriel smiled to himself, one thing that he admired of the priestess was her willingness to overcome any challenge. She had become known around Prythian, the priestess, and her Valkarie friends, as the fiercest women in their territory. Some feared the group of females, others wanted to become like them. After the Valkaryes had conquered the mountain, many more priestesses had come to train with them; even some Illyrian females, not more than a dozen, had decided to learn the ways of the warriors. Nesta, Emerie and Gwyn had to help him and his brother train the new recruits; so they had resolved that the hour after the normal training would be focused on the three of them. However, over the last few months, he had a few one on one training sessions with the priestess. Once her smell hit him, his shadows became restless; one mischievous shadow shooting towards Gwyn and flying around her. They always reacted to her that way, as if they were anticipating throughout days and nights when they would see her again. At first, Azriel had been mortified; he worried that being surrounded by his shadows would make her uneasy, afraid or even disgusted. But, as always, the priestess had surprised him by smiling and opening her hands every time she saw them; welcoming his shadows with eagerness, not fear. -I was wondering if you would come today- she said playing with his shadow. Stop, come back he said to the shadow; but again it ignored him and flew around her hair as if saying i'm not leaving until i want to. -I had a feeling you were going to fail the training course, i could not miss it- he said jokingly. -mhm, sure shadowsinger- she smiled, taking a sip of her water - we both know I'm faster and more agile than you ever were- He laughed and took his leather jacket off A moment passed, and he confessed,- i couldn't sleep- -me neither- she said smiling sadly. They had never talked
about it.
What kept them up at night, they didn't need to. They resorted to talking about books, trains and make snarky remarks to each other. He had to admit that her competitiveness matched his own; and in some way, it helped him forget about his nights. -well... how about you time me, and then i'll time you shadowsinger- she said. He smiled, he appreciated that she never pushed him; and in return, he never pushed her. He knew her terrors, he had been there to witness most of them. But unlike him, he prayed to whatever deity existed that she could overcome them. If there was one person in this world who did not deserve one bad dream was Gwyneth Berdara. -hmm... but let's make a bet priestess- he smirked. -you win, ill bring you the stash of chocolate brownies Nesta hides in the house. I win and you will let me look at more of your notes on mind-stilling-  The priestess had come one night with stashes of papers in her hands; she had dumped the papers in his lap and said - i have not finished it, don't judge the writing. But read it, and try some of the exercises, it has helped me with... you know- From that moment on, he read mind stilling exercises for his anxiety after a bad dream. Gwyn smiled, tying her long hair up in a ponytail. His shadows stilled for a moment, not in fear, but in admiration. -sounds like a deal shadowsinger- He dared to open his mind to his shadows, curious to hear what they were thinking; beauty, they said, autumn beauty. -.-.-.-.- Somehow, they ended up training until Nesta and Cassian came up the stairs. Neither of them had completed the course without busting their asses in the sand at least once. However, she was happy to convince him that even if there was no winner she would let him borrow another copy. Azriel knew that meant he would have to bargain with the house (who somehow held the brownies away from anyone) and exchange some smut books for at least one or two. His brother approached him smiling; after the Blood Rite and all the mess that had been the last couple of months, Cassian and Nesta were finally able to plan their mating ceremony. Azriel never pictured Cassian as the man who would talk for hours about how Magnolias and Lilies could not go together. But his brother was so happy, so excited to plan his ceremony; that he had been part of every decision made until that point. Nesta was more than happy to lay off the decisions of lighting and colors for their mountain ceremony; she was more focused on the guests. Cassian had insisted on inviting some of the high lords; to satisfy Rhys and make it somehow a place to prepare for Koschei. Nesta had refused and had threatened to poke Rhysands eyes out if someone other than Hellion, and Kallias arrived to their ceremony. -hey Az, you look like a whole building fell on your face man- said Cassian while tying a bun with a string of leather. -and you look like you need an ass-kicking, should I tell Nesta to humiliate you in the ring again?- he responded, smiling while he remembers the oldest Archeron sister kicking his brother out of the ring in their last hand to hand combat As the rest of their class arrived, Azriel took the chance to get near Gwyn. - Listen, I know I didn’t let you go back to your chambers. But... thank you, for ... you know being here - he said while scratching the back of his neck. She smiled. And his shadows danced happily looking at her dimples and red lips, beautifully matching her hair. -you know Azriel, I know I’ve never said it. But as your friend, I will be here whenever you need me. If you need to talk, fight, or read some smut... I’ll be here - Gwyn said. He nodded and attempted to show that her words had not just opened a light inside him that for five hundred years had disappeared. -thank you Gwyn-. -.-.-.-.-.- After the training, Azriel walked to his chamber when he heard the voice of his brother in his head. I need you, there is a mission that needs attending. Now. He sighed, he hated that Rhys sounded upset every time he talked to him; but after the mess during solstice, he had not been able to make
things right with him. With anyone for that matter; he had avoided Rhys and Elain, too scared to face the feelings that surged when he now thought of the seer. He flew to Rhys house, landing at the roof where his brother watched the bright morning of Velaris. - Azriel- his brother acknowledged him with a nod. After a couple of minutes, his high lord spoke. -how close are you with Gwyn, the priestess-. His eyebrows furrowed -why? Am I going to have to stay away from her too? - he said with an intentional bite in his tone. Rhys looked at him angrily -no. I need you and her for a new mission. One that requires trust, and your head on your brain, not your pants- -I would never think about her like that Rhys, not knowing what she had endured- he responded in a low voice. Rhys got close to him and put a hand on his shoulder - you’re right, I’m sorry. I know how much you respect and connect with her- -which is why I need you to take her to Helions library for a couple of weeks, I need her to do some research on the possibility of a fourth trove and how to help Vassa- It took Azriel a minute to process what his brother was asking of him... No, what he was asking of Gwyn. -no- he responded. Rhys grabbed his shoulder a little harder -what? What do you mean no?- -I mean that Gwyn will not leave the library under your orders. She is not ready for that- he said, his voice rising at the anger and protectiveness he felt in his chest. -how do you know that?- Rhys responded with the same tone. -because... because I know- Azriel answered -and you keep making decisions without regarding people’s feelings and fears, and that’s not okay Rhys- He knew that was unfair; his brother did what he did for the sake of the court, for the sake of the world. -Azriel that is not your call to make- his brother said in a softer voice. -neither is yours, especially because you don’t even acknowledge her existence. Or any of the Valkyries for that matter- he moved away from his brother. It took him a minute to look at Rhys, who had a pained look in his eyes. -you’re right, I can’t argue with that- he sighed-I’m sorry, I know I should’ve talked to her first; and now I will. However, if she says yes, I will task you to protect and help her. I can’t send Cass because he is ... mated now- Azriel laughed sarcastically. Of course, he thought, leave it to Rhys to make his cut bigger with a few words. -of course my lord- he said, and shot up to the sky without saying goodbye.

At the library at the bottom of the house, things were usually quiet. That was one of the reasons why Gwyn had begun to train; the library offered no distraction to her mind, no way to still it if thoughts raced through her. She had been shelving books that Merril had given her for the past hour; thinking and avoiding the memory of last night's nightmare. The blood, the rough hands holding her down, the children screaming. It was all too much, it was all too real. She had gone up in the morning to the training pit. To avoid sleeping, yes, but also because she somehow knew that Azriel would be there. She hated that he had to go through what she went through, but she was grateful for his presence at the moments when she needed him the most. Steps sounded at the end of the hallway, and Gwyn stiffened. They sounded male, heavy, and loud. She knew it was not Azriel, his shadows always let her know that he was approaching. She looked up from her book nervously, ready to run away if needed.... But that was her high lord looking at her with a sweet smile on his face -hello Gwyn, Valkyrie, Carynthian warrior- he smiled. And she realized that out of the three brothers, Azriel had the best smell. She liked the smell of night-chilled mist and cedar, the others smelled too sweat and too flowery for her taste. -high lord- she courtesy nervously. -please, don’t do that, we are practically family right ?- he said while offering her a bag that she had not noticed he carried. -I’m bringing you the best chocolate croissants in the city, Feyre told me you and Nesta enjoy chocolate at the same rate. I hope you like them- he placed them in her cart, knowing she would not touch him. Another set of steps sounded at the distance, and her sister appeared walking with rapid-fire towards her. - I told you to wait Rhysand- Nesta said. -I...it’s okay Nesta, thank you High... Rhysand— Gwyn said, opening the bag and smelling it. Damn... that was dark chocolate in the croissants; her favorite. -what can I do for you guys?- she said while taking a bite of the soft, sweet bread. -we were wondering if you wanted to dine with us tonight, here in the House, only Az, Cass, Nesta, Feyre and me- The High Lord said. - we have a proposal for you, but we want to talk to you about it first-. She looked at Nesta, who was stealing some of her croissants. - su...sure... I’ll gladly accept. It would be an honor - she smiled. -.-.-.- After her shift with Merrill ended, she went to her chambers to bathe quickly. She should change, she knew they dined casually, she wanted to fit in with the group. So she bathed, braided her hair and decided to wear a flowery blue dress that showed the mid of her back; it had a tight bodice and a skirt that flowed until the top of her knees. It had been a gift from Nesta, she had told her to use it whenever she wanted to practice what she would do when she went to Velaris for the first time. As she climbed up the stairs, she imagined what life would be like if she was brave enough to leave the library. Gods she wanted to be in the city, wanted to try the food, hear the music, look at the people. But it all scared her too much. She was waiting for an opportunity, she said to herself, an opportunity to escape the library and be dragged to the real world. The smell of roasted potatoes, beef, and vegetables filled her nose; she thanked the Mother that the house cook. she approached the dining room and smiled at hearing Nesta laugh so hard, probably at something her mate had said. She was happy that her sister had found a man that grounded her, filled her (in every sense of the way) and that respected her. She was a bit jealous that she had found a mate though, she had studied the relationships of mates for months, and understood that they were rare but only rare among powerless faes. Which meant, that the possibility of finding hers was minimum... or as Merril liked to say an absolute zero. -you came!- said Nesta, smiling. Gwyn strode down the hall to sit beside Nesta; her eyes looking around the room to acknowledge everyone who was there.
-thank you for inviting me - she said, coming out as barely a whisper. Rhysand approached with a smiled that brightened the entire room, - thank you for coming, Gwyn, i know the effort it must have been but i appreciate it-.
She smiled -those chocolate croissants were really persuasive my lord-. Rhysand got even bigger -look at you, already teasing me as Cassian does-. The house placed food in front of her, adding extra vegetables. To which she frowned "i didn't know you cared for my vitamins". She ate silently, admiring how the dynamic between all of them was. She couldn't deny the jealousy that threatened to rise, she missed having a family. No, she missed being able to enjoy family without the fear of the outside world suffocating her. Minutes, hours passed and they all kept talking. Azriel had changed his seats to be in front of her, the shadowsinger looking deeply at her while she played with her water. She felt even more comforted now that he was near her. Rhysand stood and cleared his throat -well, i'm sure Gwyn has had enough of our voices; so let's get to the point-. He approached her slowly and passed her a paper she had not noticed he carried. -we want to officially invite you to be part of this court- he started. -Everyone that is here admits that there is no one more deserving and capable to be the official scholar of the Night court-. He laid the paper in front of her. A contract, offering an obscene amount of money. -you... want me to work for you?- she said -yes, if you are comfortable doing this of course- he responded. The contract asked her to inform, research,and educate the leaders of the court, on different matters she would be asked to. -Before you accept- Azriel spoke softly, looking at Rhysand, -you should hear what the first mission would ask from you-.
Rhysand nodded, -we are looking for the possibility of a fourth trove, and we can only do so in the biggest library of the country.... in the day court-.
Leaving the library, she would not only leave the library but also the night court.
Was she ready for that?
-Would i go by myself?- she asked him
-No, you would go with Azriel as your bodyguard, or assistant, whatever you need from him- Rhysand responded.
She smiled, looking at the shadowsinger. - And you accepted this?-
His mouth quirked upward -if i didn't we would have had Nesta to deal with-.
This was it, this was the push she had asked for.
-Rhysand, i would be honored to be the scholar of your court- she said, - and i thank all of you for trusting me, i will not let you down-.
She looked around the room to find every single one of the court's members looking at her with loving, proud eyes.
She would go to the Day Court, she would find a way to help her friends and her world.
Gwyneth Berdara looked at her future companion, the beautiful male with eyes of honey that she would daydream about.
Who knows? Maybe this mission would bring them closer. Maybe they would finally talk about their nightmares, their fears.
Maybe she would finally be able to show Azriel how she felt about him. And maybe this time, he would listen.

It was another day in the shop, silence filling the room as you walked around to see the stuff you and tom made, the small store cozy, mostly green and beige everywhere to get a warm mood going.
The room smelled like roses, an incense in your hand as you took your time, slightly bobbing your head to nirvana in the background.
The bell rung letting you know someone was here, you poked your head from the shelves and looked at the door, seeing tom struggle with donuts in his dominant hand while the coffee stood in the other.
“Youre late!” You smiled and he groaned, thanking you when you made your way over to grab the donuts. “Im not late- your just early” he said, watching as you took a donut out and bit into it.
You and tom shared the shop, yes he had dreams of going to be a actor but he wasnt gonna ditch you. Youve both been best friends since he accidentally tripped you and made you cry in 5th grade, which he begged to do your homework as an apology. But there was always a tension when you both grew up, he sent you letters, well check up letters, if you need help on your homework letters, sometimes a hershy bar glued to it.
You told him your okay all the time and to stop wasting time on you, telling him to go feed his dog or clean his room because you knew he always forgot. You sent letters back too, you both didnt call each other because you liked the old ways and he admires that, he liked that you rode on your skateboard just to see him and ask him hows hes doing, he just felt like you are heaven sent.
“Righttt, well i got some crystals” you smiled at him, setting the donuts on the small white table before grabbing the box of crystals. “Y/n you know i dont like that witch stuff!” He glared at you and placed the coffee down next to the donuts.
“But tommy!” You smacked your lips, bending your knees repeatedly like a child. “They’re so beautiful and they mean something! I even got candles and cardsssss!”
He gave you a blank stare, before looking away “fine” “thank youuuu!” You walked over and he sat in his stool infront of the turntable, you made your way over and set the box in his lap, getting on your knees and opening the box.
“Swear that you wont curse me or this has no bad juju” “i just have to clean them first-“ “Y/N!” He groaned “whatttt!” You poked his leg, “stop being mean to me!”
“Im not being mean to you!” He looked down at you, you let out a hmph and got up, snatching the box before taking it into the backroom where your shared stuff went.
“Im sorry y/n!” He said, looking in the direction of the back room but sighed when he didn’t get an answer, instead of saying something again he got up to go back there, seemed like you went to the bathroom because you disappeared. He grabbed a bucket and filled it with water, then he grabbed a thing of clay that was wrapped in saran wrap to keep it fresh and went back to his turn table.
He set the stuff down, putting his foot on to buttom and watching the small circle turn before lifting his white shirt, revealing his abs right before his black tank top came down.
He heard the box of donuts opening which left a smile on his face, quietly walking over and sneaking behind the shelf before throwint his shirt at you, leaving a groan before you looked back at him, shooting him a glare.
“Can you hold that for me?” “You couldve kept it in the back smarty pants” “i guess i didnt want to this time” he shrugged with a smrik, walking off “your shirt stinks!” You lied, making him laugh and shake his head before sitting down and getting to work.
You looked through google trying to find more research about the crystals before tom called you for help. “Y/nnnnn!” “Yes thomas?” You asked, still looking at your phone.
“I need your helppp!” He said, looking down at the awkward clay bowl, a few lumps here and there in it. “Coming!” You stood and made your way over, wheb you peeked your head out you saw him trying to fix it.
His hair fluffy so his curles hanged over his head, his fingers painted with clay as he gently rubbed the bowl trying to flatten it out.
“What happened?” You asked and he sighed, shrugging “it just isnt working” “it’s probably like that because you didnt put on your lucky apron” you chuckled, grabbbing the both yours and his aprons next to the large green plant.
A loud groan left his lips as his shoulders slumped and rested his eblow on his knee, setting his cheek on his knuckles as he looked at you walking over. “Dont bring any bad spirits in here tom”
“Hey! Im not trying to!” He playfully rolled his eyes, you handed him his apron, small spidermans on it while yours had my little ponys.
“Alrightttt” you muttered, telling him to move his hand, when he did you sat on the leg nearest to you and he instantly wrapped his hand around your waist, watching as you dipped your hands in the water. “Its your turn to wash the aprons” you muttered, he let out a hum and a small laugh before you stepped on the button, letting the water drip from your hands and onto the clay.
“Can you make a heart in the middle?” He whispered, rubbing your side as he watched your hands work. “Whos it for?” You laughed and he shrugged “you” “me?” Your eyebrows furrowed and he squeezed your waist tight “yeah, why not?”
“Uh- i dont know?” You shrugged a bit, stuttering. Trying your hardest to focus but you messed up, a sigh leaving both of your lips as you had to restart.
You put the clay back in a glob, putting your hands around making it tall, a cough left toms lips as he looked away, while you tried your hardest not to laugh. “Y/n fix it” he asked. “I dont know...i kinda like it like this” you said, placing a hand on his knee.
“It looks like a penis” and with that you laughed “no seriously fix itttt!” “Okay okay, only if you let me do a reading on you”
“Y/n i dont like witchery” “but you like harry potter?” “I-its different” “fineee, i only wanted to know what your love life is looking like” you muttered and toms ears perked up. “You can find that out?” “Yeah, but you dont want to soooo-“
“Okay okay! Just fix please!” He lifted the knee that you were sitting on and rubbed your side letting you know he was ready. You chuckled and got to work.
About 5 minutes later you asked for toms hands, he gave them to you willingly and you sat all the way in his lap, tugging his hands forward his head was right in your neck, heavy breathing on your neck as you could help but get a little goosebumps on your neck.
You rocked his hands back and forth “mhm, just like that” you muttered “yeah like this?” He teased, “no your fucking up”. “Fuck off” you both laughed, you let his hands go and let him do it on his own.
“Are you ready for the reading?” You asked, tom sitting infront of you nervously and shirtless, both of your hands clean and creation drying in the back.
“I think so” he shrugged, you lit the sage “this is a cleaner okay, calm down. This is to save me and you from getting possessed”
His jaw dropped as he got up, a loud laugh leaving your lips before you told him your kidding. “Dont play like that y/n!”
You set the crystals out, on the end of the both of your ends of the table. “Y/n we arent transporting to another dimension, right?” He asked, looking at the sage and how professional it looks. “Noo we arent, you want the love reading or not”
“Im gonna shut up” he said and you agreed, telling him it would save the whole world. You shuffled the deck before knocking on it, his eyebrows furrowed as he let out that the sage stinks which made you shoot daggers.
“Alright tom” you let out a deep sigh, looking at the card infront of you. He looked at you confused, then looked at the cards.
“The Fool, High priestess, The Lovers, and death reversed” you looked up at him and lifted your eyebrows “are you resisting something?”
He shrugged “what could I possibly be resisting?”
“Im seeing soulmates, mystery and innocence. Maybe uhhhh something from childhood, someone from childhood”
He felt a cold chill, but made it stay hidden.
“Young, im getting young, you’ve probably walked by your soulmate already, had some type of chatting with them, gotten close to them, maybe some type of physical touch?” You mostly talked to yourself, tapping The Fool card before grabbing the deck, two cards flipping out and landing on tom. You reached over and grabbed them, “The World Reversed and The Star, tom you are holding something back and your spirits are giving you hope, they are hoping you are gonna speak up because you are disappointing them”

Kanan hadn’t been sleeping well lately and it wasn’t that hard to figure out why. These last few months had been hard on him, even if he pretended otherwise and when he was able to get some shut eye, his sleep was anything but restful. 
Hera hadn’t fared all that better. It was hard work trying to hide a rebel cell in plain sight. But she finally thought she had every one settled on Garel - or as much as they could be. Even if Senator Organa had deep pockets, their current set up at the spaceport was going to burn through his slush fund in record time. 
They needed to find a base. And fast. 
So Hera was busy scrolling through the list of potential planets that Captain Rex had been kind enough to provide for them, even though it was deep in the planet’s night cycle and the rest of her crew tucked away in their bunks sleeping soundly. She was sitting with her legs folded on the curved acceleration couch in the lounge, the lights set to their lowest level. Kanan had his head pillowed in her lap, his long legs stretched out along the couch, his face pressed into her stomach. It couldn’t have been the most comfortable sleeping position but Hera was just grateful that he was finally sleeping. 
A green finger slowly dragged across the screen of her datapad while her other hand swept through the silky strands of Kanan’s hair, the sounds of his soft snoring mixing with the slight hum of power from the Ghost’s generators. It was peaceful like this, reminding Hera of the early days, when it was just her and Kanan against the galaxy. She smiled at the memory. 
Her peace was interrupted as the door to the lounge slid open to reveal the  imposing shadow of Captain Rex standing in the doorway.
“Sorry.” Rex said quietly as he stepped into the lounge. “I didn’t think anyone would be up.”
“It’s alright.” Hera smiled at him, her hand going back to stroking Kanan’s hair. “Couldn’t sleep?”
Rex rubbed sheepishly at the back of his bald head. “You could say that.”
Hera hummed in acknowledgment before saying, “There’s some caf left in galley if you’d like some.”
“I’m good thanks.” His eyes cut to Kanan’s sleeping form. “You mind if I join you for a bit?”
“Not at all, in fact, I’m going over the list you gave us. Maybe you can help me narrow things down?”
“It would be an honor.” Rex smiled at her, taking a seat on one of the stools. Hera toggled a knob on the side of the holotable and projected her datapad so they could both look at it. For a while, they researched planet after planet, hoping to come across a suitable location for a base, Kanan sleeping peacefully in her lap the whole time. She wondered for a moment, if she should wake him up and send him to her cabin but she was afraid that if she did that, he wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep. He desperately needed the sleep and Hera wasn’t going to deny him the opportunity. Besides, she kind of liked how he was cuddled up to her, even if she was starting to lose feeling in her toes. 
Rex, as it turned out, was a wealth of information that had her questioning why Fulcrum didn’t utilize him sooner. She assumed it was mostly because he had served his time and wanted to live out the rest of  his life in peace. It was probably what the old clone deserved after everything he had gone through. Still, she was grateful that he had joined the fight once more. They needed someone with his experience and knowledge if they really wanted to take down the Empire for good.
Hera didn’t know how long they worked, the time passing with little care or notice. It was only when Kanan made a pitiful noise, a cross between a whimper and a groan, that caused them to pause their work. Fear shot through Hera at the sound, her lekku going tight and her breath catching in her throat. Her attention zeroed in on him, everything else falling by the wayside, completely forgotten. Hera’s hands flew to his face, stroking her thumbs over the tight lines of pain that had begun to form around his closed eyes. 
“Shhh love.” She said gently, bowing her head so their foreheads were touching. “It’s alright. You’re alright.” She had to work to keep her voice even, emotion making her throat tight. “It’s alright love. It’s just a dream.”
Kanan continued to tremble in her arms, terrible, horrible little whimpers escaping his lips, each one like a knife to her heart. He was in pain, awful pain, but there was nothing Hera could do to help but hold him through it. Eventually, his shaking slowed and the tension began to leach from his body until he was restfully sleeping once again. 
Hera sighed heavily and leaned back against the soft cushions of the couch. It took her longer than she would have liked to register that Rex was still there, sitting across from her at the table. His old face looked weary, his warm brown eyes misty and full of understanding. 
“He get those a lot?” He asked, his voice barely above a whisper. 
Hera nodded. “Lately, more than usual.”
Rex looked down at his scarred fingers. “I’m sure my presence here hasn’t helped much.” he chuckled darkly. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they've gotten worse because of me.” 
Hera frowned at him. “He just needs time Rex.”
“Oh I know.” he took a breath, rolling his shoulders. “It hasn’t been easy for me either...but for what it’s worth, I’m glad he survived. He seems like a good man.”
“The very best.” she ran a hand down the side of his face. There wasn’t a day that went by where she didn’t thank the goddess that Kanan survived the Purge. That this wonderful, kind, brave human that stole her heart, lived and breathed when so many of his people had perished. She knew how the weight of his survival hung heavy on his shoulders but Hera couldn’t help but feel so immensely grateful that he was one of the few that were spared. 
“Do you know where he was?” Rex asked suddenly. “When it happened?”
Hera bit down on her bottom lip, thinking about how to answer. Kanan never did like to talk much about his past, he tended to keep most things close to his chest and only divulged his secrets in small, uncommon pockets of vulnerability. Hera didn’t feel right spilling his secrets to a man he might not ever trust. But at the same time, she felt that Rex deserved to know something.
“Kaller I think.” she said finally. 
Rex hummed, looking lost in thought before responding, “Kaller...I don’t remember what battalion was stationed on Kaller. Who was his master?”
Hera glanced down at Kanan, watching his chest rise and fall with each breath. When she didn’t reply Rex sat back, creating space between them. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry. It’s just in my experience, you can tell a lot about a Jedi based on how they treat their men. I thought if I recognized the General that maybe...I understand that Kanan might not want me to know.”
“Her name was Depa Billaba.” Hera said softly, twirling a strand of Kanan’s hair around her finger. “That was his master.”
Rex rubbed her beard. “Ah, General Billaba. General Kenobi spoke highly of her, she was a good leader, cared deeply for her troops.”
“She gave her life to save him.” She said, not taking her eyes from Kanan’s sleeping face. She had lost her own mother at a young age but she couldn’t imagine having to watch her die with her own eyes, killed at the hands of people she once called friends. 
“I’m sorry.” He whispered. 
Hera glanced up at him and offered him a kind smile. “It wasn’t your fault Rex.”
“It doesn’t make it any less true.”
“I know.” she nodded. “And I think deep down Kanan knows that too.”
He just needed time, they both did. 
“Well,” Rex said after a moment, pushing himself gingerly to his feet. “I should probably try and get some sleep. We’ve got a busy day ahead of us tomorrow.”
“Thanks for your help Rex.” she said as he made his way to the door. 
He paused as the doors slid open, a warm smile on his weathered face. “Anytime Captain.” he gave her a jaunty two finger salute before disappearing down the hallway. Hera sat there, her finger tips resting on the underside of Kanan’s jaw, feeling his pulse beat out a steady rhythm. 
The past few days had been a challenge but they had been through worse and they had survived. This was no different. Kanan would come around eventually with Rex, or maybe he wouldn’t. But Hera had hope. 
She leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on his brow. “Kanan?” she prodded. “Love, I need you to wake up.”
Kanna groaned in response, his face scrunching up with displeasure. Hera chuckled at the sight. “I know dear but don’t you think you’d be more comfortable in a bed?”
At that Kanan cracked open his eyes, the familiar teal hue clouded over with sleep. “Wh’ happen’d?”
“You fell asleep.” she responded with a kiss.
“Oh.” his eyes slipped shut.
Hera hoisted him up, ignoring his grumble of protest. “C’mon love. Let’s get you in a bed.”
Kanan let Hera maneuver him to his feet, leaning heavily on her as they trekked back to her cabin. He flopped bonelessly on to the cot and curled around her the second she slipped under the covers. From one breath to the next, he was asleep. 
Hera held him close, her cheek pressed against the top of his head. Her eyes slipped close, Kanan’s slow and even breathing lulling her to sleep.

‘So? Neil why isn’t coming again?’
‘Because he said he had to take care of his daughter,’ Dilshad said, looking away.
Alishka sighed happily. There was nothing good about not having her older brother visit her in Boston, but she was also somewhat relieved. Conjuring up stories was unlike her, but Neil had insisted upon seeing the ‘Guy from Work’, a result of her confiding in Gianna, his wife. Alishka had stopped telling things to her after that.
‘I bet she is growing up fast,’ she said, lining up her next shot.
‘She is. You won’t believe how much she has grown since you last saw her.’
She laughed. ‘I know that. I have talked to her, you know. She video calls me every Sunday.’
‘That’s cute. We only ever talk when I am over.’
‘Yeah ‘cause she likes me better than you.’
‘She likes me better than you,’ Dilshad mocked, pitching his voice higher, making her laugh even more. ‘Don’t think I’ll fall for that trap.’
‘It’s not a trap. It’s the truth.’
Her ball rolled toward the pins, and she had another perfect score.
‘Hell, how do you do that?’
She smirked. ‘You gotta focus.’
‘Ofcourse,’ he said, rolling his eyes.
To be honest, in a long time, she actually felt happy. After the … events at Miami, she hadn’t been sleeping well. A game of bowling with her brother felt like therapy. She had also asked her friends to tag along, but only Bryce had been free, and he should have been here by now…
‘Hi Lish, sorry I am late,’ he said, leaning in for a quick hug.
‘No worries,’ she said, hugging him back. ‘This is Dilshad, my brother.’
They exchanged greetings and warmed up to each other. It amazed Alishka how easily Bryce got along with everyone. He just had that … personality.
‘So Lish, ready to lose?’
‘You bet.’

‘That’s no good. Another perfect score.’
Ethan laughed, a full hearty laugh in what seemed like weeks. James was being especially whiny as he lost their little match at Bowling as he proceeded to take off the tennis shoes and put the ball back.
‘How the hell do you do that?’
‘Focus,’ Ethan answered, breathing heavily.
‘Yeah, sure,’ James mocked. ‘Look, this has been fun, but how about we meet for dinner tonight? And don’t be ridiculous and try to bullshit me by giving some excuse. You are coming.’
‘Okay,’ he said, chuckling. ‘You can be pretty relentless.’
‘That I am. Although, I gotta take off now, so I’ll see you at dinner? Libertine? Sounds good?’
‘Yeah, I’ll see you then.’
‘Yeah, ‘kay.’
As he disappeared into the crowd, Ethan leaned back, taking a moment to relax while he got rid of his own shoes. Having a day off wasn’t always good. He was a workaholic, and he liked to keep himself busy, but sometimes, slowing down felt good too.
He could’ve never imagined he’d be out bowling when Naveen was this sick, but James had been adamant. He had said, ‘Sometimes a cleansing of mind is required. Maybe you’ll think better after having some time for yourself.’
Well, he didn’t know if James was right. But it didn’t hurt much to give a few hours to his friend rather than arguing, because that would never be useful. James was a lawyer, he knew his ways.
Ethan sighed. As much as he had loved the few hours they had spent together, it was time to go back and do some more research.
He stood up, walking with his determined stride, keeping his head low. Only now he noticed how chaotic a bowling alley actually could be. For him being in his own tone, he halfheartedly ignored the familiar laughter that filled his ears, thinking he was probably just imagining.
But just a moment later, he slammed into someone, his arms immediately reaching out to catch her because she was knocked off balance.
Only then he realised that he hadn’t quite imagined her laughter.
She was actually here.

For a moment of madness, it felt all too impossible.
Ethan Ramsey didn’t do activities. Hell, he didn’t even take off days. For her to meet him here of all places, and this way… she had to be dreaming.
Her eyes widened as she pulled back, stumbled on her own feet before staggering even backwards.
‘You okay, Lish?’ Bryce asked. ‘And you–’
‘Hello, Dr. Lahela.’
‘Uh, hi, Dr. Ramsey.’
Oh dear God. Could this get any more worse?
‘Is this the guy from work?’
Guy from Work. Ofcourse.
Alishka’s eyes widened even more in horror. And she noticed Ethan’s eyebrows rise at the mention. ‘How do you know? Who told you?’
‘Gianna, she said, –’
‘Shh,’ Alishka hissed, but to no avail.
‘Well, you are quite the man,’ Dilshad said, smiling as he walked past her. ‘Hi, I am Dilshad Roy, her brother.’
Vaguely, she regretted all this, even though there was no way she could have known. This just wasn’t like the Ethan she knew. But somehow, that seemed to be a less of a concern now. She exhaled sharply, about to cut in, but then her gaze met Ethan’s. She couldn’t tell what he was thinking as he raised a hand to stop her.
‘Yeah,’ Ethan said with a small smile. ‘It seems you already know me.’
Alishka winced. Apparently, it could get worse.
‘Who wouldn’t? You are Ethan Ramsey, her medical hero. And …’
‘Her boyfriend,’ he finished, ignoring the shiver running down his spine at the word.

He didn’t know what had taken over in that moment. His duplicity came quite naturally. Was it out of protective instinct or in a desire to live in a bubble, he didn’t know.
He wasn’t aware of what Alishka’s family knew about them. This could be some move in that situation, but he barely gave it a thought as he moved to Alishka’s side.
‘Would you like to play a round, Ethan?’ Dilshad asked over the loud music that filled the alley.
‘He can’t stay,’ Alishka said immediately. ‘There is an important research to be finished, and..’
‘And you don’t need to worry about that,’ he offered. ‘I’ll be happy to stay for a round.’
Alishka painted a false smile on her face when Dilshad looked her way, but in reality, she was in complete utter shock. They moved to the side some more, allowing people to pass around them. Almost too suddenly, she looked away, Ethan following her gaze to a distant corner of the alley. His gaze slipped down to the mustard yellow ripped top she was wearing, paired with jeans. She looked good in casual clothes, not something he saw her usually in.
‘You didn’t have to do that, you know,’ she whispered, crossing her arms across her chest. ‘Lie like that. Why did you do it?’
‘I don’t know,’ he said under his breath. ‘Felt like the right thing to do.’
She scoffed. ‘Right thing about what, Ethan? I think you were very clear–’
She was interrupted when he loudly cleared his throat as Dilshad approached.
‘Here you go man, let’s do this.’
‘Yeah,’ Ethan said with a chuckle. Let’s do it.

One and a half rounds later, Ethan found himself again by the side of Alishka, quietly staring at the floor. He wondered what she found so fascinating about it.
For the lack of anything to say, his gaze shuffled between their feet, wondering about what she had been saying earlier. It was right, he had been very clear about the nature of their relationship when they had been back from Miami.
It had been his decision after all, hadn’t it?
Beside him, Alishka sighed loudly. Her silence was worse than he could’ve ever imagined.
Maybe she was correct. Maybe he did it for himself, throwing all the rationality he stuck by otherwise out of the window. Maybe he was wrong in creating this bubble.
He didn't know.
What he knew now, was that apparently, both of them had tremendous acting skills. And they’d have to use it for a little more time because soon, they would be done with this little bubble that he had created so impulsively.
Coming to think of it, maybe he was wrong, but he didn’t want to acknowledge that.
‘AW MAN!’ Dilshad exclaimed as Bryce did his – possibly – first perfect score. ‘I can’t believe I lost!’
‘We all have our days, Dilshad,’ Alishka said quietly, before turning to look at Ethan with cold steel. ‘I guess, we should leave now, I have got some homework to do for our next case.’
‘Yeah,’ Bryce offered. ‘Lish, can I walk you?’
‘Ofcourse,’ she smiled brightly. ‘Just a moment please.’
Pulling Ethan aside by the arm, she brushed her hair away and looked up at him. ‘If we get into any mess because of this, it’s on you. Like I said, you didn’t have to do that. I don’t like lying. And therefore, you can’t blame me for anything.’
With that, she walked away, wrapping an arm around Bryce as he led her outside.
‘She can be like that sometimes,’ Dilshad said, looking at the expression on Ethan’s face. He wasn’t quick enough to school it into a proper smile. ‘Weird, you know, but don’t let it bother you. She is probably just stressed.’
And she is right to be, he thought, but said nothing.
‘What I was saying is, it’s her, I mean our niece’s birthday next month. And she’d be really happy if you come.’
If we get into any mess because of this, it’s on you. Like I said, you didn’t have to do that. I don’t like lying. And therefore, you can’t blame me for anything.
Ethan offered a tight smile, watching her disappear into bright light of the day.
‘Yes, ofcourse.’

Kai watched you as you moved around the kitchen, making dinner for your friends and you. You were in the Salvatore Boarding House, the place you lived in after having your home destroyed by Klaus Mikaelson. The Salvatore brothers adopted you into their home. You had been friends with them for the past few years, so it wasn’t surprising you moved in. You already spent more than half your time here anyways. 
Tonight you were having a dinner party, planned by your friends and you to just relax and forget about every crazy thing that had and was happening in your life. Granted, something crazy was probably gonna happen, interrupting the relaxing night, but you held onto hope to have one normal night. Like how you used to before all the supernatural stuff.
One thing kept the hope from staying, though. It was Kai Parker. The insane witch who was ruining everything for you and your friends over the past few months. Stefan had decided to invite him over, make nice with him so you all would have him on your side. You sided with Stefan to not be in a fight with your best friend, but you deeply hated the thought of Kai sitting with you. Eating dinner, staring at you like a creepy stalker, probably plotting your death. Good thing was, though, Elena and Caroline were at the house, helping you. Everyone knew that if you were alone with Kai, you would probably kill him. Bonnie, sadly, was with Stefan and Damon, working out a plan to kill and/or get him back into the prison world. 
You were in the kitchen alone at the moment, Kai was sitting at the island table, staring at you. He had a smug look on his face, resting his chin on his palm and leaning on the counter. He never tore his eyes away from you. It made you want to gouge his eyes out. To try and ignore him, you put on music and focused on the dinner you were making. 
You sang the lyrics to ‘Since U Been Gone’ by Kelly Clarkson quietly. You moved your body to the beat, chopping up onions. 
“You have a beautiful singing voice,” Kai said. 
You rolled your eyes, huffing and ignoring him. 
“You know, I can sing, too. I used to love singing in the car with my family,” Kai said. 
“Before you slaughtered them?” You remarked. 
Kai frowned at you, pain shooting through his heart. You continued making steak, turning on the stove and letting it heat up. Elena and Caroline finally came back into the kitchen with ice cream and alcohol. You snatched the bourbon from Caroline’s hand, getting out a cup and pouring yourself a drink. 
“Can I have some?” Kai asked.
You nodded, not looking at him. You poured him a glass, walking over and setting it in front of him. His hand reached out to grab the glass, making contact with your hand. His fingers brushed against yours. You felt your skin tingle and goosebumps arose on your arm. Kai noticed and smirked. 
“Cold?” He asked. 
You glared at him and pulled back your arm immediately. “No.”
Kai chuckled, knowing you lied. He could sense you had feelings for him, even if you never would admit it. He just needed to make you see him differently so those feelings would surface. 
You went back to ignoring him, which only fueld his pining for you more. 
Elena and Caroline went over to you with the steaks.
“You know, Mr. Socio is in love with you,” Caroline said. 
“He's not in love with me. He just likes to chase people and get them comfortable, then hurt them. Since I’m the only one not with a boy who can protect me, with you having Stefan and Damon, Caroline having Tyler and Klaus at her beckoning call, and Bonnie having Enzo, he has chosen me to haunt and stalk,” you said.
Elena looked back at Kai, who was looking at you still. Elena turned her attention towards you, again. 
“I hate Kai as much as the next person, but he really looks like he has actual feelings for you. You should give him a chance.”
You scoffed, not believing what you were hearing. “Did you forget that he almost killed Bonnie and your beloved Damon to the prison world? He slaughtered his siblings and father without any remorse. Not to mention, he's an annoying prick.”
Elena laughed, “I used to think about that with Damon. But look at me now, I’m in love with him.”
“Yeah, but Damon isn’t a bad person, he just does bad things. Plus, I have seen the way he looks at you and treats you, he is every girl’s dream. Not to mention, he’s a pretty attractive guy. Kai isn’t like that. I mean, yeah, he’s hot, but he’s not the type of person I, or anyone, would want to date,” you explained and took a sip of bourbon.
Caroline smirked, “So, you are attracted to him.”
“No. You can say someone is attractive but not have any romantic feelings,” you shrugged.
In your mind, though, a little voice in your head told you that you did have feelings for him. You ignored the voice, not wanting to try and battle with your feelings. 
“Sure, Y/n. The more you deny it, the worse your feelings will get,” Elena teased. 
You rolled your eyes, flipping the steaks. Oil popped off the pan and hit your wrist. You squealed in pain, holding your wrist. 
Elena hurriedly got you a cold washcloth and pressed it on your wrist. 
“Thanks, El,” you smiled. “Mind taking care of the steaks? I have to keep a cold compress for a little.”
“Not at all. Care, can you get the sundae bar ready?” Elena asked, taking the tongs you used to turn the steak over. Caroline nodded, going over to the cabinets to get ice cream toppings out. 
You went over to the living room, slumping on the couch and grabbing the remote. You turned on ‘Gilmore Girls’. You kept the cold compress on your wrist. 
You felt the couch sink on your left. You didn't bother to look over, already knowing who it was. You two didn’t even sit in silence for 10 seconds before Kai started talking. 
“Rory and Jess should’ve stayed together. Dean’s too soft,” Kai commented while watching the tv. 
“Jess is bad for her. He's smart, but he still has no future. Dean really loves Rory and she threw that away,” you argued.
“True, but Jess loves her, too, just in a different way. Dean is so mellow. Jess is fun, exciting, dangerous. Kind of like Damon. That’s why Elena chose Damon instead of Stefan, right? Because he made her feel things that Stefan could never make her feel, which she liked better,” Kai stated. 
You glared at him. “She didn’t choose him just because of that.”
“No, she chose him because of that. You choose someone because the way they make you feel, that's how love works,” Kai said, turning his attention towards you. 
You felt his burning stare. You decided to turn to him, looking into his dark blue eyes. 
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” you sighed. 
Kai smiled. His smile made you feel giddy and warm inside. You pushed those feelings away, piling more denial and hate in your mind towards him. 
“You have those feelings towards me, too,” Kai smirked. 
You peeled your eyes away from him, ignoring him once again. 
“Don’t deny it, Y/n. I can see it on your face. I can feel it,” Kai teased, scooting closer.
“Kai, stop,” you muttered. 
He got so close to you, you felt his breath on your cheek. Your heart rate picked up and you found it hot and hard to breathe. Heat went down south between your thighs and goosebumps formed on your neck. 
“You like me, Y/n. I can hear you breathing heavy and you heart beating fast. I can smell your arousal between your legs,” Kai said, putting his hand on yours.
You pulled your hand away. “I said cut the shit, Kai. You’re making me uncomfortable,” you lied. 
Kai’s eyes softened and he moved away immediately. “I’m sorry. I just-”
“You just what, Kai? Think you can use your witchy powers with me to make me fall in love with you? News flash, psycho, I’m not dumb,” you scoffed and stood up.
“I didn’t try to use my powers, I swear. But I can use my powers to heal your burn,” Kai suggested. 
“No, I don’t want your help,” you shook your head. 
“Get off your high horse and let me help you, Y/n. That burn will take a few days to heal and it'll hurt when you shower or brush something against it. Please, Y/n, I want to help you,” Kai pleaded. 
You looked at him. His eyes showed honesty. You sighed in defeat and sat back down on the couch. You moved close to him, your thighs touching. Kai took the cloth off of your burn and held your arm gently. The same, lovey-dovey feelings came back. This time, you didn't fight it as hard, letting yourself enjoy not having to keep up your walls.
“I’m so mean to you, why are you helping me?” You asked. 
“Because I like and care about you. I don’t like seeing the people I care about hurt,” he answered.
He put his free hand over your burn. The burn disappeared by skin forming over it. 
“Really? If you cared about me, you’d leave me alone,” you chuckled. 
“I can’t when I gotta get on your good side. With you and your friends plotting my death, I need an ally,” Kai said. 
Your distaste for him surfaced again. You pulled your hand away once the burn was healed. 
“That’s why I hate you. See, you don’t actually care about me. I knew it. Don’t sit or talk to me during dinner,” you spat and strutted over to the kitchen. 
Dinner was ready, thank the heavens. Damon, Stefan, and Bonnie came into the house on cue. 
“Bon!” You exclaimed, running over and hugging her. 
“Hey! Dinner smells good,” Bonnie smiled and hugged you back. You pulled away and laughed, “Elena and Caroline made it. I got burned.”
“You okay? I can heal you,” Bonnie said. 
“No, uh, Kai healed me already,” you said sheepishly. 
“You let that lunatic touch you?” Damon asked. 
“He was there and asked. He was being nice, but then he turned into a dick again,” you explained. 
“Well, at least you’re not still hurt. C’mon, let’s go and eat. I'm starving,” Stefan said. 
You all went to the kitchen, seeing the meal Elena and Caroline prepared set out on the table. 
“Hey, babe,” Damon smiled and went over to Elena. He put his arm around her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. 
You looked at them longingly. You wanted what they had. So in love, nothing else mattering in the world but each other. You sat down in between Stefan and Caroline. You cut a piece of steak for yourself and got some mashed potatoes and green beans. 
“This is so good, guys. Thanks for inviting me over,” Kai said with a mouthful of steak and mashed potatoes. 
“Our pleasure. Mind eating with a closed mouth?” Stefan remarked. 
You chuckled at Stefan’s comment while Kai frowned. 
“So, what were you three doing while us four were here?” Kai said, gesturing to Damon, Stefan, and Bonnie with his fork. 
“None of your business,” Bonnie said. 
“Aw, c’mon. We’re friends now,” Kai teased. 
“You’ll find out soon,” Damon smiled at him. 
Kai frowned again and ate his food in silence. 
“Do you guys want some blood to go with your wine?” Caroline asked. 
“Yes!” Damon smiled. Caroline got up to get a few blood bags. 
All of you except Kai made conversation. While you were talking and laughing, Kai looked at you. He knew his comment earlier got you two on the wrong foot again. He racked his brain with ways he could get on your good side, get you to agree with going on a date with him. He likes you, he really does, he just doesn’t know how to show those feelings without getting rude and angry. He was willing to try for you, though. After a few hours of talking with everyone, people started to excuse themselves to leave. 
“I’ll see you later, Bon and Care,” you smiled and hugged your two best friends.
“See you! Have fun with Kai, I think he plans on staying,” Caroline smiled.
“I actually am going to leave, too,” Kai butted into your conversation. 
Your heart sank slightly. Since calming down from being angry, your attitude towards him softened. In the back of your mind, you didn’t want him to leave. You wanted him to stay, to pester you, to talk to him, to sit down and have him make you feel the way you did on the couch. You wanted to sit down and enjoy his company. But on the surface, you couldn’t care less. 
“But, I want to talk to Y/n before I leave,” Kai said. 
Bonnie and Caroline looked between you two quizzically. They smiled and let you two be alone in the kitchen. 
You walked to the liquor cabinet, grabbing two glasses and vodka. Kai followed you and sat down in his seat at the island table. 
“So, what do you want to talk about?” You asked as you poured him a glass of vodka. You grabbed your glass and went to sit next to him. 
“I wanted to apologize for earlier,” he said and looked into your eyes. He took the glass without tearing his eyes away from you. 
“You apologizing? Who has you possessed,” you laughed looked around jokingly. 
Kai smiled with you as you brought your attention back on him. 
“No, this is just me. I know what I said earlier about just wanting you as an ally was wrong. I mean, yes, I want you as an ally, I want all of you as an ally, but I still like you. A lot. And I care about you a lot, too,” Kai spoke. 
You took a sip of vodka, sighing. “I accept and appreciate your apology, Kai. But, I don’t like you, not like that anyways, I-”
Kai interrupted you by taking your hand in his. “Y/n, I know I pushed earlier and made you uncomfortable, and I apologize for that, too, but I know that's not true. The look in your eyes when you look at me when you let your guard down is not a look regular friends give each other.”
Your eyes focused on his hand on yours for a few minutes, and looked back up to his face. Butterflies filled your stomach again and his words tugged at your heart strings. Your walls started to come down and as hard as you fought to keep them up, you couldn’t. Kai was getting to you and deep down, you knew he was right. That you cared for him the same way he cared about you. 
But then you remembered that he was the enemy. He took your best friend away from you, wrecked havoc on this town, and killed his parent in cold blood. You couldn’t take the chance of getting hurt. So, you pulled your hand away slowly from his, standing up and downing the rest of your drink. 
“I admit, I may have some feelings for you. Deep down inside, but I can’t take the chance, Kai. I’m sorry. Thank you for apologizing and not ruining dinner. I’ll see you later,” you gave him an apology of your own. 
You started to walk away, but Kai put his hand on your arm. He spun you around and your lips met his. Your eyes widened as Kai kissed you. You tried to fight back from not kissing him, but as his arms wrapped gently around your waist, pulling you in, you melted against him and kissed him back. 
As your lips moved with his for the first few moments, you closed your eyes and  behind your eyelids, your brain exploded. You could see colors as your lips moved with his, and your eyes rolled to the back of your head. His lips tasted like vodka and chocolate ice cream. You wrapped your arms around his neck, burying your fingers in his hair. His tongue swiped on the bottom of your lip and you opened your mouth. Your tongues met and you moaned softly in his mouth, tugging at the hair on the nape of his neck.
You pulled away, needing air. Kai opened his eyes, a big, content smile resting on his lips. 
“And friends don’t kiss friends like that. So please, give me a chance. Let me show you I’m different than what you think. Let me show you me in a new light. I can change for you. I want to change. Don’t deny what we have, Y/n.”
You stared into his eyes, knowing you couldn’t deny your feelings any longer. You gave him a small, sweet smile and nodded your head. “Okay, I’ll give you a chance. Prove me wrong, Parker.”
Kai took his hands off your waist, first pumping the air. “I will, I promise.”

Guardian Angel
TW: talk about abuse / panic attack
@tiamat-zx @zearbearz I’m sorry this took so long. I hope you enjoy.
It had been an hour or so since both Jester and Beau had fallen asleep but Yasha had found herself wide awake. Her attention was drawn to the window of the tavern room they were staying in. Yasha once again volunteered to take the floor but now she was sitting on the windowsill, watching the outside world. She hadn’t bothered trying to sleep. Not yet at least, she preferred it this way. To make sure the others found sleep before her. In some sort of way she felt as if she was protecting them, keeping watch as their protective angel, even if she knew nothing would happen.
It was like this most nights. Stay up until everyone had fallen sleep before finding sleep herself. The moonlight lit up the room just slightly so she was able to make out most of the room in color with the help of her dark vision making everything clearer. The room didn’t have much, two beds and a night stand between the two of them where an unlit candle sat. Their belongings scattered across the floor in a way to have a much more comfortable sleep than wearing all their gear.
Yasha had sat her two swords to the side, both resting in the corner of the room, along with her bag she carried. She didn’t have much on her to begin with so her stuff didn’t take up too much space. Her long cloak she had on was used as a blanket of sorts in case she got cold. Luckily that wasn’t the case but it was more of a comfort at this point to wear it. She knew by this point nothing would happen, at least she hoped. She could feel sleep creeping it’s way to her. The way her head kept nodding off as her eyes began to close but only to suddenly snap her head back up, her eyes wide open once more. This went on for a few minutes and whenever she thought she couldn’t last any longer she was scared awake by a sudden movement.
Jumping she looked over to the bed closest to the door. Beau had sat up quickly, her chest going up in down quickly, breathing heavily as if she had been racing for hours. Sweat could be seen along her brow and the back of her neck. Strains of her, usually pulled up hair, rested against the frame of her face. Her eyes red and puffy, a sharp contrast from the blue iris’ she had. Her cheeks were wet with tears. The panic in her face was clear and Yasha was now wide awake. The heavy breathing didn’t seem to slow down and the panic was still rising from the human monk.
Yasha was swift to her feet. Her boots were heavy against the wood of the floor. Going to Beau’s bed side she sat down on the edge of it, “Beau!” She said placing a hand on Beau’s knee that was hidden underneath the blanket.
The panic that Beau held didn’t subside and clearly the touch didn’t help as she tried to kick away Yasha’s touch. Pulling away quickly she watched as Beau pressed herself against the head of the bed, “please don’t!” She stuttered out holding up a hand in some sort of way to protect herself. Her voice was raspy and held fear in it. Nothing like Yasha had heard before. Inside it broke Yasha and part of her held a fear of not knowing what to do.
Beau’s eyes were glassed over in a way that made her look right through Yasha and clearly whatever dream she had been having set her into a panic. She didn’t know what was real and what was not. Yasha didn’t know what to do. She didn’t have calm emotion like Caduceus but he wasn’t in their room and Jester was surprisingly still asleep. Bringing her hand up to Beau’s cheek she went to flinch away, her body tensing, her eyes closed tightly as if she was preparing for an ongoing attack.
Yasha’s touch was gentle and after a few seconds a soft light glow made itself known in the dark area around them. Yasha had no idea if this would work. She knew she could heal wounds but that was about it and Beau had no physical wounds. After a few seconds the panic Beau had slowly disappeared, the warmth of the healing was welcoming and familiar to her. It was a reminder on where she was.
What she was greeted with was different colored eyes looking back into her own blue ones. Worry was written all over Yasha’s face, something that was strange for a women who showed little emotion a lot of the time. The warmth of Yasha’s healing brought Beau back to the present day and she found her breath slowing down as she calmed. Reaching up she placed a hand on top of aasimar’s own hand.
“Yasha?” She spoke in a raspy voice. Her throat felt like it was on fire and each time she swallowed heavily it felt like sandpaper. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she took in the area around her. It had only been a dream. Thank the gods that it was but fear began to rise in her chest. Did she do anything? Did she say anything?
“Are you okay?” Yasha asked in a whisper.
Beau studied the features of Yasha’s face. She had no idea what time of the night it was but it was clear that the taller women hadn’t gone to bed yet. She was able to see the silhouette of Jester, still asleep in the bed next to her own. What had Yasha been doing up?
“Yeah, yeah. Totally fine. Just a bad dream I guess?”
“Just a bad dream? You were panicking really bad just a second ago. Would you like to talk about it?”
The concern never left Yasha’s eyes, her hand rested on Beauregard’s cheek. It grounded the brown haired women. A reassurance she wasn’t alone right now. She wasn’t at her home back in Kamordah. She was no where near her father. He couldn’t do anything but she could feel the shadow of his hand print on the cheek opposite of Yasha’s own hand, lingering there from the dream. It was less of a dream and event that plagued her mind. It was something she wished she could forget, or at least not fear for. It was something that already happened to her so why did it affect her so bad?
She hated that part of her. She was here now and with her new family who cared for her unlike her blood related one. He was something she shouldn’t fear but she did.
“It was about the night I left to go to the Cobalt Soul.”
Beau didn’t have to go into detail for Yasha to know what the dream had fully been about. What was troubling the human so much at this moment. It was strange seeing Beauregard so vulnerable. It had only happened a handful of time whenever Yasha was around. She knew how Beau tried to act all tough all the time, someone who seemed unbreakable but in reality that was the opposite and Yasha adored Beau’s emotions. Before Yasha could say anything Beau spoke once more.
“Did I say anything bad? Did I do anything?”
“Besides being scared and ‘please don’t’, there wasn’t much.”
“Shit- I’m sorry Yasha.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry about Beauregard, you were having a bad dream. It’s understandable how you reacted.”
There was nothing for her to be sorry about but deep down in some way she was. She felt like if she had disturbed any peace Yasha was having. Her mind was scrambled. Thoughts over lapping the other and each time she blink she could for just a second see the dream she had seconds ago; she hated it. Pulling her hand away from Yasha’s own, the aasimar lingered for a few seconds before doing the same. The warmth of her touch was now gone and Beau could feel herself already regretting that decision. She felt the headache making itself known as she brought her hands up and palmed at her closed eyes.
“Have you ever had a bad dream?” The question was sudden and she could see Yasha was clearly thrown off by it as she looked up at her.
“I have, they’re not fun.”
“Tell me about it. Do you think they ever stop?”
Yasha looked at Beau, confusion rested all over her face. Yasha was more evident about her confusion but deep in Beau’s eyes that same confusion sat there. Someone who could research all the answers, one of the smartest members of the Mighty Nein was lost, just as lost as Yasha was.
“I don’t know. I think so. They become less over time but I don’t think they’ll ever just got away.”
Beau groaned in response, clearly not the answer she was hoping for.
“You know he can’t hurt you anymore.”
“I know that!” She said a little too loud before lowering her voice once more, “that’s why I want it to stop. I feel like a coward.”
Yasha could feel the pain in her chest. How Beau felt so negatively about herself. She was the opposite and as thoughts came to her mind to tell her that they became a jumbled mess. Letting out a sigh she spoke from her heart instead.
“You’re far from a coward Beau. You’re so strong. You faced your demons head on. That is something that I don’t think I could ever do. You’re so wonderfully and I and the rest of the Mighty Nein can see that.”
Swallowing heavily once more she gave a small genuine smile, “thank you Yasha, but you’re pretty strong too.”
Giving a nod in reply Yasha spoke, “maybe writing it down can help.”
Beau could feel her brow furrowed in confusion. A blush of embarrassment was the reply the monk got from Yasha as she averted her gaze.
“That was a stupid idea. I just thought you know, I sometimes have trouble with my feelings and I write stuff like that down. Help me clear my mind.”
Beau was quick to connect the dots as she eyes widen in response.
“That’s a great idea Yasha. That’s not stupid at all. I’ll be sure to do that tomorrow.”
Turning back Yasha gave a nod once again.
“What are you guys doing up? It’s the middle of the night you know, is everything alright?” Came a tired voice. Both women turned their heads quickly to the source of the voice. Blue hair a mess; Jester rubbed at her eyes to clear the fuzzy vision she had as she yawned.
“Everything is fine Jess.” Beau replied as Yasha stood from the bed she sat on. Beau had to stop herself from reaching out for Yasha to ask her to stay. To be a anchor in the waves of emotion the monk had been feeling.
Blinking Jester’s eyes went back and forth between Yasha who was now standing at her full height and Beau who had puffy eyes, clearly from crying in her sleep, “what happened?” Worried rested in Jester’s eyes as she looked at Beau.
“I just had a bad dream is all, Yasha helped.”
Yasha didn’t say a word as she made her way back to the windowsill. Sitting down she rested her back against the frame as she crossed her arms over her chest, watching the two women, “We were just about to go to bed.”
Jester glanced over at Yasha then brought her full attention back to Beau, “do you want to talk about?”
“I can tomorrow. I don’t want to keep you awake, like I said Yasha helped. I think I should be okay.”
“You sure?”
“One-hundred percent. Thanks Jester.”
With an unsure look from Jester she sighed, “fine, but don’t think you can get away tomorrow without telling me. Goodnight Beau, goodnight Yasha, both of you get some sleep. We have a busy day tomorrow.” She yawned at the end.
“Of course.” Yasha said in response as she watched Jester lay back down to sleep.
“Hey Yasha.” Looking over she was meant with the blue eyes of Beauregard, “thank you. I appreciate it a lot.”
With a small smile tugging at the corner of her lip she spoke in a gentle voice, “you’re welcome.”
Laying down Beau’s eyes never left the outline of the figure who sat there looking out the window. Tomorrow she’d write her heart out and hoped that maybe it would help. That her thoughts wouldn’t be a mess, but right now she had no reason to worry. She had a angel looking over her and if Yasha had any idea that Beau was looking at her she made no comment. Sleep found Beau before Yasha, this sleep calmer than the first and all the monk hoped for was the same peace for Yasha; whenever sleep would find her too.

And When I am Formulated, Sprawling on a Pin - Chapter Twenty-Two: Until Human Voices Wake Us
I know how this chapter finishes, but before you worry, it’s not the last one :)

I saw a white flash and the blinding rage of Niragi’s eyes, before my body was ripped from the balcony. My back slammed against the stone pillar, and the force knocked the air from my lungs. For a split second, panic took over me. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t breathe. But then a familiar scent of laundry detergent and sweat overwhelmed my senses, and I knew I was breathing, even if I couldn’t feel the air.
I’m alive, I think.
Chishiya’s body was pushed against mine, his hands pressing my shoulders into the pillar as bullets tore past us. Through the thin fabric of his hoodie, I could feel the elevated thump of his heart, and his hair tickled my face with each quick breath.
Suddenly, the bullets stopped.
‘Chishiya?’
He stepped away, his eyes scanning over the both of us as he checked for any injuries. There was no blood on him that I could see, however a bullet had torn through his hood, shredding the fabric in two.
‘I need to go down there,’ I said. The flames were spreading thick and fast, and it was becoming harder to breathe. ‘I need to help them, or at the very least, apologise to Usagi and Arisu for what we did. And I need you not to stop me again.’
His eyes narrowed, but after a moment of hesitation, he said, ‘meet me by the river afterwards. And use your head, stay away from Niragi.’ Shoving his hands in his pockets, he began walking towards the hallway that would lead upstairs.
‘Where are you going?’
He half-turned, replying ‘there’s something I need.’
Then he disappeared, and no matter how much I despised him for the way he’d treated me, I couldn’t help but pray he would return unscathed.
The riverside, I thought, focus on the riverside.
Holding my sleeve over my mouth and nose, I ducked under flaming ceilings and sidestepped burning carpets like hopscotch. Then sprinting down the staircase, I reached the lobby just in time to witness Niragi pointing his gun at Arisu’s head.
No!
I ran, seeing nothing but the glistening burns of Niragi’s skin, and the finger resting on the trigger. But when the shot fired, it didn’t hit Arisu.
Aguni charged like an animal, even as the bullets burst through his skin. His body slammed into Niragi’s, carrying the both of them off into the flames and smoke. There were several gunshots… and then nothing. It all happened within seconds, but his sacrifice held everyone’s attention as we all looked at the space where they had both disappeared.
Thank you, Aguni.
‘THREE MINUTES REMAINING.’
There was no time to check if they were dead. Several survivors jumped into action as they lifted Momoka’s body, taking it through the entrance and out towards the patio. It turned out they didn’t need my help. But it was okay. There was still a loose end I had to tie.  
Usagi was sitting on the ground, inspecting Arisu’s injuries as he winced and insisted that he was okay. They both froze when they saw me approaching.
‘ごめんなさい,’ I said, sincerely. ‘苣屋の本当の予定が知らなかった.’ I’m so sorry. I didn’t know about Chishiya’s real plan.
Usagi looked unsure of whether to believe me, and truth be told, I didn’t expect her to, let alone forgive me. Arisu didn’t seem as hesitant though. He searched my expression as if he were solving a puzzle.
‘It’s okay,’ he said. ‘I’m guessing he tricked you too.’
I nodded, wishing I could go back and change things. After this, I would meet Chishiya by the river, hopefully to put this chapter to rest so I could move forwards and focus on surviving. But for now, I extended a hand.
Arisu gladly took it, and supporting his weight between us, Usagi and I helped him out of the building. I tried not to look back, I really did, but there was no trace of Chishiya in the flames.
Please don’t let the riverside be another lie.

‘GAME CLEAR - CONGRATULATIONS!’
The singsong voice echoed through our phones as we all gathered to watch the fire of judgement consume Momoka’s body. Countless hands and legs extended out of the pile, blackened and stiff. Eventually, they would all char away into a single pool of ash. Nobody spoke, and yet somehow, the screams still rang out over the crackle of the embers. Our ‘utopia’ was burning to the ground, there were barely any survivors, and there was nothing left for us but a pyrrhic victory.  
One by one, the others began filing out of the patio to get away from the hotel before it collapsed. Following behind, I took one last look at the entrance.
There’s no sign of either of them…
I should’ve been mad. No, I was mad. But that wasn’t to say I’d stopped loving him, and the thought that he might not have made it out was too difficult to bear. The same went for Kuina. Even if she probably knew that Chishiya had been screwing with my mind this whole time, I still loved her like a sister, and that would never change.
And so, while the others headed for the bridge, I broke off from the group and changed course towards the river. Noticing my disappearance, Usagi and Tatta looked back.
‘Aren’t you coming?’ Usagi called.
I smiled and shook my head. ‘また後でね,’ I shouted. ‘See you later!’
It’s not a goodbye. I just have some things to sort out.
The two looked at each other, doubtful, then waved as they disappeared into the darkness. They would probably all form a camp together, so if things with Chishiya ended here, or if he never made it to the river, it wouldn’t be too difficult to find them.
Without the heat of the fire, the night was cool, and I shivered as I made my way down the pebble banks to the riverside. I sat near the water’s edge and watched from afar as the roof of the Beach collapsed in places, bringing my hope down with it. There was still no sign of Chishiya, but I couldn’t keep my eyes from the hotel.
There’s always a chance. He wouldn’t die that easily.
Even as the cold of the pebbles seeped into my skin, and the wind blew through the burnt holes in my hoodie, I waited and waited. Before long though, I sank my face into my knees and wrapped my arms around my head to stave off the cold. It did nothing to ease the hollowness growing inside me, nor the empty sound of the water lapping against the bank.
‘Crying again?’
My heart jumped, my head snapping up instinctively.
You’re here.
Chishiya ambled along the bank, coming to a stop a few feet away from where I was sitting. Aside from the grey tinge of soot on his white hoodie, he was unharmed. ‘You don’t have much faith in me,’ he said with a half-smile, and held up the Ten of Hearts card.
That was what this was all about. Everything he had done, it all led up to the last card. I got to my feet, unsure of how to feel now he was standing before me. Even though I was relieved, it didn’t change anything.
‘You’re right,’ I said. ‘I don’t have much faith in you. All you’ve done is lie to me.’
‘Hmm….’ He looked towards the Beach. ‘That’s not strictly true.’
He was referring to what he’d said on the rooftop, but even that was probably a lie. After I had chosen not to follow him and Kuina, he must’ve realised he’d lost one of his chess pieces.
‘Kuina,’ I said. ‘Is she....’
‘She’s fine.’
I released a breath, relaxing. ‘That’s good to hear.’ I was afraid of the answer, but I had to ask. I needed to know. ‘Did you tell her to become friends with me, for your plan?’
He carefully considered the question. ‘At the very beginning, when I asked her to take you some food, she offered to become your friend,’ he said. ‘But that was before she met you. She asked me to change the plan to keep you out of it.’
While I was relieved to hear that my friendship with Kuina wasn’t orchestrated by Chishiya, I still felt disappointed. ‘So that’s why you decided to switch from me to Arisu.’
‘Kuina had nothing to do with it. I changed my mind for my own reasons.’
I shook my head, quickly growing irritated. We kept going round and round in circles, and  he wasn’t registering anything I was saying. It no longer mattered whether he was telling the truth or lying, because there was no trust left to give. And even now, he just kept persisting with the same tactics.
‘I already told you back then,’ I said.  ‘I don’t know what’s real and what’s not, so I can’t believe in anything you say anymore.’
Chishiya nodded slowly. ‘You also mentioned proof.’
‘Only because you can’t prove it.’
He tilted his head. ‘Actually, you’re wrong.’ Fishing around in his pocket, he pulled something out and stared at it in his palm. In the darkness, it was impossible to see what it was.
‘What are you doing?’
With a sly smile, he replied, ‘I’m forcing the moment to its crisis.’
My thoughts stopped abruptly. That was… he couldn’t have researched it, could he? Memories of the pharmacy flashed through my mind, the oceanic blue light that saturated the room, him wrapping my arm in bandages, and me reciting lines of poetry.
He read the rest of the poem?
If he did, he must’ve realised what it was about. My eyes dropped to the item in his hands, right before he tossed it at me. Catching it, I found it was a small box. I had a feeling what it was, and my fingers shook as I opened it. Inside, propped up in the middle, was a silver ring set with a peridot stone.
The jewellery store...
Back then, I had told him about my real-world obsession with stones... all my childish dreams.
And peridot.
It was a stone brought to earth through a cosmic explosion, known by Ancient Egyptians as ‘gems of the sun’, and considered ‘evening emeralds’ by Romans because of their bright warmth, radiating even under candlelight.
‘I was in a game, when I saw it,’ he said, staring out across the river. ‘The Eight of Diamonds. At the time, I didn’t know why I took it.’
Tears dripped down my chin as I closed my eyes, embracing the pain and the relief and everything else I couldn’t even begin to describe in words. Chishiya didn’t approach me, let alone try to comfort me, but simply stood there by the edge of the water, waiting for me to stop crying like an idiot.
‘This isn’t fair.’ I hated the way my voice cracked.  ‘You can’t just do this after everything. You can’t just expect things to be okay now.’
‘I know.’
‘And you can’t just pretend like none of it ever happened.’
‘I know that too,’ he said.  
‘You…’ I stepped forwards, wrapping my arms around his body and clutching onto the back of his hoodie. ‘I… I hate you so much.’
At first, he tensed. Then I felt his hand on the top of my head. ‘No, you don’t.’
We remained like that for a minute or so, until a light rain pattered down around us, and it became clear Chishiya was growing uncomfortable. He had never been one for human contact. Moving back to give him his space, I slid the ring onto my finger. It was almost a miracle that he’d gotten a perfect fit.
Chishiya took one look, regarding it coolly. ‘Before you get the wrong idea,’ he said, ‘this isn’t a—’
‘I understand.’ I smiled, using my sleeve to wipe the tears and rain from my face. ‘I don’t care about any of that. Especially not while we’re still in this world. Just stay with me for a while. That’s all I want.’
When he didn’t respond, I suddenly became aware of the gentle weight knocking against my side. The copy of Wuthering Heights was still in my pocket. After all we’d been through, it had completely slipped my mind.
I tugged it free. The spine was bent, and the pages were curved from being crammed into such a small space, but it was intact, and I was glad I had rescued it before the hotel burned down. Using my hand to try and shield it from the rain, I flipped through the pages and held it open for Chishiya, who only looked at it with contempt.
‘Of all the things to save,’ he muttered.
I gestured to the mysterious quote, determined to get an answer this time. ‘I’ve been meaning to ask you about this for ages. You’ve underlined it but I can’t seem to translate it.’
He took the book from my hands and scrutinized the quotation. ‘“I’m tired of being enclosed here. I’m wearying to escape into that glorious world, and to be always there; not seeing it dimly through tears, and yearning for it through the walls of an aching heart; but really with it, and in it”.’ Once he finished translating, he closed the book and held it back out to me. ‘I didn’t underline that.’
Wait… but how?
‘You didn’t?’ I asked, confused. ‘Why was it highlighted then?’
‘It was used when I found it.’ He shrugged. ‘It probably belonged to a student at some point.’
‘Oh…’
I couldn’t help but feel let down at how the big reveal had been nothing more than a student’s annotation. But at the same time, the quote still meant something. It had been me all along.
‘Chishiya…’ I said quietly, ‘I don’t want to be afraid of things anymore.’ I glanced down at the ring on my finger. ‘I don’t want to be afraid of you either.’
I want to start a new page and write a new book.
When looked at me, he had that same unreadable expression. ‘Then don’t be.’
And then, soft as the rain on the river water, I kissed him. It was awkward and clumsy, and his whole body went rigid, but he didn’t flinch. Instead, his hand came to rest on the back of my head, neither moving nor resisting. Eventually, I pulled away, and the only sound was the silky surface of the water breaking against the pebbles.
‘Let’s go,’ he said. ‘Kuina is waiting for us.’
It was the beginning of a new chapter, but this time, there would be no secrets. We’d write it together.
‘Okay.’
