ALANA SPRINGSTEEN FIRES UP Boldest Chapter Yet WITH TWO-SONG RELEASE: “cowboy / hold my beer”
Today (10/18), Columbia Records/Sony Music Nashville artist-songwriter Alana Springsteen packs a punch with two new songs that introduce her boldest chapter yet: the reflective yet fierce “cowboy” and stadium-sized anthem “hold my beer.” Spotlighting her fearlessly detailed storytelling and empowered point-of-view, the double-song release marks the much-anticipated follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2023 debut album, TWENTY SOMETHING.
“'cowboy / hold my beer' had to drop together. To put it in the simplest terms, ‘cowboy’ is my past and ‘hold my beer’ is my future. If there’s anything I learned from the process of writing and releasing my debut album, TWENTY SOMETHING, it’s that we’re never really done ‘figuring it out.’ With that in mind, I can’t promise I won’t find myself in relationships that don’t end up working out again. But I can promise I’ll be a lot more secure in and out of them,” shares Springsteen. “The guy that ‘cowboy’ is about hurt me in ways that I’m still coming to terms with. I still find myself wondering how I couldn’t see what was right in front of me. That self-doubt finds its way into every part of your psyche, and it manifests in the ways that you interact with the world around you. I’m working on healing from that. Part of the process has been finding my confidence and strength again. That’s what ‘hold my beer’ signifies. It’s for everyone out there who’s ever been underestimated or doubted. It was important to me that I start this next chapter of my story with these two songs.”
Arriving on her 24th birthday, “cowboy / hold my beer” finds Springsteen pushing forward with the hands-on approach she brought to every aspect of TWENTY SOMETHING – a three-part powerhouse whose title track landed on NPR Music’s “The Best Songs of 2023” list, with The Tennessean naming her Chris Stapleton collaboration “ghost in my guitar” among the “25 Nashville Songs That Tell the Story of 2023.” To that end, she co-wrote, co-produced, and played guitar on both new songs, in addition to collaborating with heavy-hitters like Amy Allen (a GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter whose latest credits include mega-hits like Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso”).
youtube
Firing up the next era of her artistry, “cowboy / hold my beer” each illuminate different facets of Springsteen’s inner world and in-depth perspective on life and love. On “cowboy,” she looks back on her relationship experience to date and examines tough-to-break patterns like falling for someone who’s all wrong. Written by Springsteen, Ido Zmishlany, Delacey, andAmy Allen, and produced by Zmishlany (Tate McRae, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber) and Springsteen, the hard-hitting but tender track puts a fresh spin on a timeless tale of hope and heartbreak, revealing Springsteen’s supreme lyrical talent as she merges personal confession with classic cowboy iconography (“I put his face up on a wanted sign / These days they're lookin different but commit the same crimes”). With its pounding drums and smoldering guitar riffs, “cowboy” builds to a heart-stopping peak in the song’s stripped-back final moments, beautifully showcasing the irresistible force of Springsteen’s singular vocals.
youtube
Meanwhile, on “hold my beer,” Springsteen flips the script and offers up a wildly fun takedown of anyone who might dare to underestimate her. Written by Springsteen, Ido Zmishlany, Delacey, and Sarah Solovay, andproduced by Zmishlany and Springsteen, the unapologetic banger opens with Springsteen confidently delivering her lyrics in a hypnotic form of talk-singing (“And you’re jokin with your boys and I see it on your face / You think I look too sweet to be a threat / And there might’ve been a time when that woulda made me cry / But now I’m like alright bet”). In a brilliant counterpart to “cowboy,” “hold my beer” takes full ownership of her actions and embodies an unstoppable power at the gloriously soaring, gang-vocal-fueled chorus. Together, the two songs represent the fascinating dichotomy of her emotional life, honoring her strength and vulnerability in equal measure.
With “cowboy / hold my beer,” Springsteen brings an even greater level of self-assurance to themes explored on TWENTY SOMETHING, an album comprised of three fully realized installments: Messing It Up, Figuring It Out, and Getting It Right. Since the release of her landmark full-length debut (and its widely lauded DELUXE edition), she’s earned praise from the likes of PEOPLE (“Everything about her says she was made for this wild, breathless — and, yes, high-risk — life of an artist”), American Songwriter (“Springsteen’s music has struck a chord with listeners from every corner of the globe, giving a pathway to those seeking connection, solace, and understanding”), Billboard (“Springsteen possesses a classic female voice packed with angst and determination”), and many more.
In addition to headlining stops among supporting a run with Tyler Hubbard with one stop in Canada at History on November 1st, Springsteen makes her much-anticipated return to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry stage tonight (10/18) after appearing for the first-time on her 22nd birthday in 2022. Buzzed-about from her spot on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series, and recently joining forces with GRAMMY® Award-winning, multi-platinum superstar DJ/producer Tiësto for their sizzling summer collaboration “Hot Honey,” she continues to make headlines. Promising more new music on the way, she’s also teamed up with Us Weekly to document her journey to this year’s CMA Awards – check out that exclusive content here and here.

Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd sold the rights to the music catalog of their songs. The deal with Sony amounted to $400 million.
The deal includes the rights to the band's name and portraits of its members, which allows Sony to sell related products (clothing, souvenirs, etc.), as well as produce films and television programs. And, of course, the rights to publish music in various formats. The copyright remained with the musicians.
This deal became another in the list of high-profile purchases of Sony Music that have already taken place, in the summer of 2024, it managed to acquire the rights to the Queen group's music catalog for $ 1.27 billion.
James Blunt
British pop-rock artist James Blunt promised on his social networks that he would change his name if the anniversary reissue of his first album Back to Bedlam (2004) again took first place in the British charts. According to the musician, fans will be able to choose a new name for him.
In 2005, 2.4 million copies of Blunt's debut album were sold. In 2009, their number reached 3 million, which made the longplay the best-selling in Britain in the 2000s. The release includes hits such as You're Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover.
Back to Bedlam will be re-released on October 11.

Tom Hamilton
Life after Aerosmith continues.
Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton said on social media that his new band Close Enemies will give their first concert on October 11 in Nashville. The band also includes drummer Tony Brock, vocalist Chasen Hampton, guitarists Peter Stroud and Trace Foster.
In his post, Hamilton wrote:
"Hi, I need to tell you something about a band called Close Enemies that I play in. We have a bunch of good songs recorded. We are going to release one of them very soon. Meanwhile, on October 11, we are performing in Nashville at an institution called the Eastside Bowl. Please come!"
Later, the bassist also added that the band rehearses a lot: "The songs sound amazing."
A book about Bon Jovi will be released for the band's 40th anniversary.
Genesis Publications and Bon Jovi have announced the book "Bon Jovi Forever". BON JOVI gave Genesis unprecedented access to their entire archive to create an exciting journey through 40 years of the band's history, during which she created 16 albums.
Jon Bon Jovi says: "I never planned what I want people to feel when listening to our songs. But when you compose, it's often the songs that are closest to you that pass the test of time and turn out to be closest to others. If the song is written from the heart, and not just 'worked out', there is a high probability that the listener will find something important in your story."
John himself and his colleagues actively participated in the work on "Bon Jovi Forever", so the publication will have the status of an official one. The exact date has not yet been announced, but it is already known that the book will be available both separately and as part of a box set, which will also include an exclusive seven-inch vinyl record.
The trailer for the documentary "Elton John: Never Too Late" has been released.
"The film follows Elton John as he looks back on his life and the amazing early days of his 50-year career on this emotionally charged, personal and inspiring journey," the synopsis says. - As he prepares for his last concert in North America, at Dodger Stadium, Elton takes us back in time to talk about the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, violence and addiction to become the icon he is today.
youtube
The documentary, directed by R. J. Cutler and David Furnish, premiered on September 6 at the Toronto Film Festival. The world premiere will take place on December 13 on Disney+.
Legendary Yes and King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford, who worked as a liaison with music for 15 years, returned to the stage as a special guest of the British jazz band Pete Roth Trio.
The band's website uses the phrase "jazz without borders". The musician is comforted that "they are creating jazz for a new worship of music that is free from the usual jazz stereotypes."
Bruford announced that he would start recording and releasing soon, on January 1, 2009. His last public concert with Earthworks took place on July 31, 2008. After retiring, Bruford earned a doctorate in music from the University of Surrey and wrote an autobiography, "Bill Bruford: The Autobiography. Yes, King Crimson, Earthworks and More”, which received many positive reviews.
With the exception of a brief participation in the Ann Bailey's Soul House cover band, Bruford's single foundation for the drum kit took place in 2023 at a concert in memory of John Wetton, who participated in the song "Let's Stick Together".
The British band The Cure
She confirmed rumors that their album "Songs Of A Lost World" will be released on November 1. The longplay will be the first for the artists since 2008.
The band also presented the first track from the release of "Alone". According to The Cure's frontman Robert Smith, the nearly seven-minute song helped him understand the focus of the entire album.
The full-length album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales. The gloomy, minimalistic cover was created by a long-time colleague of the team, designer and photographer Andy Vella. The work depicts the 1975 sculpture Bagatelle by Slovenian Janez Pirnat.
Ozzy Osbourne named the most favorite song from his repertoire.
"I have a real weakness for the ballad Mama, I'm Coming Home. The lyrics were written by Lemmy — but I described to him exactly what I wanted to say in it, that is, I set the content," says Ozzy in an interview with Classic Rock. "But I'll tell you what, I don't really have a personal favorite. People always ask me which is my favorite album that I've made — and I don't have one! All my recordings reflect either the fun and chaos or the terrible circumstances that happened to me. Each of them is a reflection of me at that time."
The song "Mama, I'm Coming Home" was released as the second single from the album "No More Tears" in late November 1991. It was one of two collaborations with Lemmy on the album, the other being "Hellraiser".
youtube
In an interview with Classic Rock in 2013, Lemmy recalled how he came up with the lyrics of the song.
"I came up with this song," said the late Motörhead leader. "He sent me a text about what he would like to sing, and I think he gave me the title, but that's it. I'm good at it because that's how I write our songs — I come up with a title, and then I write a song based on it. Later, Ozzy and I were doing an interview in the same tent at this festival, and one guy asked: "The song Mama I'm Coming Home is the most personal thing you've written. Was she a big jerk to you?" And Ozzy just said, "He wrote it!"
The frontman of the British band Coldplay, Chris Martin, sang one of the new songs of the band in a karaoke bar in Las Vegas under the guise of another person.
Chris Martin took to the stage in a baggy suit, wig, glasses and with an inflatable balloon in his hand. In a local bar, the musician performed the song "All My Love". This track will be part of the band's upcoming album "Moon Music", which is scheduled for release on October 4. There will be a total of ten tracks in the longplay.
youtube
In August, Coldplay's "Music of the Spheres" tour became the highest-grossing rock tour of all time. Before that, the record belonged to Elton John.
Ringo Starr announced the cancellation of concerts in Philadelphia and New York due to his illness.
According to the artist's representative on social networks, Ringo caught a cold and the doctor advised him to rest. Starr played a total of 10 concerts before falling ill. His All-Starr Band now includes Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Warren Ham, Hamish Stewart, Gregg Bissonnette and Buck Johnson.
We wish Ringo to get well and hit the drum again 🥁

Storia Di Musica #312 - Kaki King, Legs To Make Us Longer, 2004
Neanderthal stupisce per la dolcezza, All The Landslides Birds Have Seen Since The Beginning Of The World è misteriosa e quasi gotica, fa impressione la sua capacità di creare emozioni con la tecnica e il suono.

Release: December 5, 2022
Lyrics:
Mama, I'm callin', I've got some news
Don't ya tell daddy, he'll blow a fuse
Don't worry, I'm doin' okay
I know you raised me to know right from wrong
It ain't what you think and I'm still writin' songs
Just never thought I'd see the day
I've never felt this way
I met somebody and he's got blue eyes
He opens the door and he don't make me cry
He ain't from where we're from
But he feels like home, yeah
He's got me doin' things I've never done
In Georgia, they call it a sin
I'm wearing Tennessee orange for him
Took me to Knoxville last Saturday
And I wore the hat on his dash to the game
It sure wasn't Athens but I
Fell for him under those Neyland lights
I met somebody and he's got blue eyes
He opens the door and he don't make me cry
He ain't from where we're from
But he feels like home, yeah
He's got me doin' things I've never done
In Georgia they call it a sin
I'm wearing Tennessee orange for him
Mama, forgive me, I like him a lot
Hell, I'm learning the words to Old Rocky Top
And he's got a smile that makes me forget
I've always looked better in red
But I met somebody and he's got blue eyes
He opens the door and he don't make me cry
He ain't from where we're from
But he feels like home, yeah
He's got me doin' things I've never done
I met somebody and he's got blue eyes
He opens the door and he don't make me cry
He ain't from where we're from
But he feels like home, yeah
He's got me doin' things I've never done
Songwriter:
In Georgia, they call it a sin
And I still want the Dawgs to win
But I'm wearing Tennessee orange for him

SongFacts:
"Tennessee Orange" is a song by American country music singer Megan Moroney. The song was released in December 2022 as her debut single, and is included on her major-label debut album Lucky. Moroney wrote the song with Ben Williams, David Fanning, and Paul Jenkins.
The song gained popularity while Moroney was still an unsigned artist, due to social media posts in which Moroney was wearing a Tennessee Volunteers T-shirt that fans speculated belonged to Morgan Wallen. At the time, she was recording music produced by Kristian Bush, one-half of the duo Sugarland, who serves as producer on the track. Due to the song's popularity online, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2022 based on downloads and streaming, and led to her signing with Arista Nashville by year's end. The label serviced the song to country radio until March 2023, when parent company Sony Music Nashville closed the Arista Nashville division and transferred Moroney to Columbia Records' Nashville division.
The song is a love story about college football, portraying a relationship between a narrator who is a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and a man who is a fan of their rival, the Tennessee Volunteers. Moroney released a music video in January 2023 which features Moroney wearing Tennessee Volunteers apparel. As of July 2023 the song reached top on Country Countdown USA, making it her first single to reach the top of the charts.

Rooting for the Anti-Hero: How Taylor Swift and The Once-ler Are Incredibly Similar
I know this is a very cursed post, but bear with me here.
Along with the rest of the world, I've grown obsessed with Taylor Swift's new album, Midnights. By my third or fourth (or hundredth) listen, I found myself connecting songs to The Once-ler. You know, from the 2012 animated movie The Lorax. Starring Taylor Swift. Lead single Anti-Hero stuck out to me the most, with lines like “Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism, like some kind of congressman,” and “One day I’ll watch as you’re leaving, ‘cause you got tired of my scheming for the last time,” stuck out to me. Naturally, once I get something in my head I can't let it go, so I was sent down a rabbit hole of connecting Swift’s music to The Once-ler. What I discovered is the two share very similar backgrounds and career trajectories.
Both Once-ler and Taylor grew up on farms. Taylor was born and raised in rural Pennsylvania, moving to Nashville mid-childhood. The Once-ler's location is unspecified, but appears to be in the Midwest or deep south. Since they were young, they were strong-willed and focused on success. Taking pride in their individualism, Swift and Once-ler didn't let their many naysayers stop their dreams of their "product" taking off. For Swift, it was her music. For Once-ler, it was the Thneed. Both were strong business people who would stop at nothing to get exposure.
Upon moving to Nashville, Taylor walked up and down record label's offices, with a CD and a pitch. Throughout high school, she was bullied by peers for wanting to be afamous singer. Eventually, she signed with Sony Records in 2004. Likewise, after arriving in Greenville, Once-ler played his jingle in the center of town everyday. He was faced with ridicule by townsfolk, yet he kept coming back until the Thneed gained popularity. After that initial push, both were propelled into stardom. As is the case with most celebrities, soon their image became larger than life. Their fame grew unmanageable as they slowly became a brand, a product, rather than human. Greed became a motivator in every step they took. Taylor put forth constant merch drops with high prices, slow shipping, and low quality. Then the Ticketmaster controversy occurred. Similarly, over the course of the movie, Once-ler slowly becomes corrupted by greed. He needs to keep "biggering"; expanding his factory and making as much money as possible.
Both Taylor Swift and The Once-ler have a desire to outdo themselves. They want to set records and beat them, they want to be the ones on top. However, with fame comes carelessness. For Once-ler and Taylor, this manifested in environmental degradation. Once-ler destroyed the ecosystem in the Truffula Valley, ignoring objections from The Lorax. On a smaller scale, Swift has recently been called out for her use of her private jet. It was reported that she had the worst Co2 emissions this past year. She totaled 170 flights in just 7 months.
Taylor reflects on her feelings about being famous and the stressors that come with it in her documentary Miss Americana. She recalls her journey to fame and what it's like being under the public eye. The Once-ler tells a similar story throughout The Lorax to Ted. He tells the full story of his journey to success and warns young Ted to not make the same mistakes he did. Both stories are politically focused to a degree, Once-ler focusing on environmentalism and Taylor on lgbt rights. Overall, the two share a similar upbringing, rise to fame, and mindset.
Thank you for reading if you made it this far. I could do a whole other post on analyzing Taylor songs and how they relate to the Once-ler so if you want that let me know. Again I hope any of this makes sense I wrote it in a frenzy.

COREY KENT RAISES A BLACK BANDANA
Sony Music Nashville artist Corey Kent has spent more than 15 years cutting his own path through a tangled wilderness of stumbles and setbacks … and never once come close to waving a white flag. The result…his sophomore album, Black Bandana, named a “Best Album” by NPR’s All Songs Considered withRolling Stone noting his “charismatic vocals lift every song.” The platinum-selling Kent will kick off his headlining Black Bandana Tour on Sept. 21.
Kent also surprised fans today with the release of a music video for his current single, “Now or Never” featuringLauren Alaina. The Tennessean calls the track a “steel guitar-aided ‘80s-style power ballad” and the video captures that spirit with the duo delivering angst and drama in the clip.
Title track “Black Bandana” helped set the tone for the album Billboard calls, “music for those whose lives have been seasoned by rocky times." Co-written with Rocky Block, Jordan Dozzi, and Brett Tyler, the slow-burning call to stand your ground pairs tender country-rock reverence with a big-picture mindset, helping tie all of Kent’s struggle, success, and plans for the future together. The album was almost finished when he wrote it, Kent says, but he was happy it “derailed” the project.
youtube
“It encapsulates the journey. The reason we’re here is because we didn’t give up, and the whole record is a call to action against all odds,” he explains. “When the going gets tough and everybody quits, you be the one that stays the course and never gives up. I think there’s a lot of people that relate with that.”
Co-writing six of Black Bandana’s 10 songs, what Kent ultimately wanted was to mix themes of integrity, resilience and family with a sonic setting befitting the mission. Finding the midway point between cinematic electric guitars and heart-pounding drums meet a warm, gravel-road rasp, as Kent brings classic rock into the present tense.
Other tracks fuse that “wave of black bandana” call to action with Kent’s let-it-ride mentality. The dark and smoky soul of “Ain’t Gonna Lie” kicks the album off with a rough-edged ‘70s rock spirit for a tune that on the surface, finds a guy fessing up about the damage to his broken heart. But really, it’s another call to be unapologetically honest, in whatever you stand for.
Tunes like “Damn Good Country Song” beg for a chance to get destroyed by love, matching Kent’s tender growl with a bare minimum of back alley R&B production – just enough to make the torchy track strut. And while previously released “Never Ready” emerges as a fully-realized full-circle ballad, with Kent acknowledging the fleeting nature of our most precious blessings, tracks like current single “Now or Never (feat. Lauren Alaina)” seek to strike while the romantic iron is hot – a seize-the-moment power duet built on orchestral “’80s hair metal ballad vibes.”
“Break Like That” smolders with a singalong promise of fidelity, and while “Rust” tributes a love that will weather the elements, tracks like “Nothing But Neon” and “This Heart” sway with somber classic rock heartache.
A Bixby, Oklahoma native now based in Dallas, the proud husband and father has become a decorated artist on the rise, growing from humble heartland roots into a Platinum certified Number One hit maker with 950 million career streams, and a black bandana on his neck. But today, that Black Bandana is more than an accessory – and not just the title track of his sophomore major-label album, which Music Row calls, “gently but unrelentingly uplifting.” It’s his rally cry.
“It started from riding motorcycles and wanting something over your face so you didn’t swallow a bug,” the singer-songwriter says. “But then it turned into a staple I wear on stage, and then a symbol of the path through my career, and life. Through all the ups and downs, the one constant thing was this relentless hope – this relentless pursuit of believing that if I don’t give up, I can get where I’m going.”
With a self-built story that has seen success and disaster, keeping that belief wasn’t always easy – but it’s been paying off. Rising from the vibrant Red Dirt country scene as the embodiment of authenticity, Kent set his sights on Nashville as a teen, bringing his self-penned catalog of country-rock anthems with him. But after the pandemic coincided with the loss of his first publishing deal, Kent was forced to move to Texas and get a job on a paving crew to pay the bills, yet he stubbornly refused to call music quits. Honky-tonks and dancehalls on both sides of the Red River became his stomping ground, and slowly but surely, the black bandana spirit grew.
Fast forward a few years and the hit single “Wild As Her” proved he was right all along. An untamed tribute to a free-spirited stunner, the track re-invigorated Kent’s career as a now Double-Platinum-certified No. 1 at country radio, and the lead single off his major label album debut, Blacktop. Despite never cracking country radio’s Top 40, Kent’s trust-your-gut second single “Something’s Gonna Kill Me” went Gold (and is now approaching Platinum status), proving his message was connecting. And momentum kept building, with Kent hitting the road alongside Jason Aldean, Ashley McBryde, Parker McCollum and more. Next-big-thing accolades came in from CMT, Opry Next Stage and more, but even as Kent became the most played new artist on country radio for all of 2023, he kept the underdog, who-cares-about-conventional-wisdom mentality. And so did his fans.
For Kent, the point was that his fans have the same independent spirit he does, and he took that lesson into his next chapter. Settled into his ranch in Texas and intent on being fully present as husband and father, while also achieving his dreams, his second album is all about finding balance, keeping clear eyes on what’s important – and waving that Black Bandana for all to see.
“We all face our own demons. We all face our own setbacks, and I hope this record serves as encouragement,” he says. “It would be really easy to lean on the past and go ‘Look at what I’ve done,’ but I’m still excited about the records I’ve yet to create. I’m excited about the shows I haven’t played yet. I’m excited about unlocking new levels of my craft, and writing more songs that people connect with deeply. …I still live for those moments.”

Success Comes Quickly for Taylor Swift
By MORNING CALL | Staff Report
PUBLISHED: February 10, 2008 at 5:00 a.m. | UPDATED: October 5, 2021 at 3:42 p.m.
When Taylor Swift was 11 years old, she practiced her signature diligently. She experimented with curly letters and bold, determined strokes. She filled notebooks with her autograph in the hopes that one day, it would be scribbled on thousands of T-shirts, album jackets and posters.
But don’t mistake the Grammy nominee’s daydreams for arrogance.
“I was never that kid that walked around saying, “I’m going to be famous.’ ‘Cause that kid is annoying,” Swift says, laughing, during a phone interview from her home in Hendersonville, Tenn., near Nashville.
Swift got her wish and then some. At 18, the Berks County native and new darling of the country music industry is up for a Grammy Award — music’s top honor — tonight for Best New Artist.
Her 2006 debut album, “Taylor Swift,” has hit double platinum in stores and platinum in Web downloads. She’s the subject of one magazine article after another, including a four-page spread in the Feb. 8 issue of Entertainment Weekly. And she tours with the biggest names in country, including Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Rascal Flatts.
Despite her youth, Swift has long been on the path to fame. It began in Wyomissing, a Reading suburb, with a very tiny Taylor singing for anyone who’d listen. She dragged her parents to fairs, to festivals, to karaoke contests, to sporting events — if there were a “Star-Spangled Banner” circuit, she’d be on it.
Afternoons, after homework, were spent writing songs and learning to play the guitar.
Pat Garrett, a Strausstown musician and owner of a sheepskin clothing shop, first met the wannabe starlet when she sang in the weekly karaoke contest at his former restaurant, the Pat Garrett Roadhouse in Strausstown. She was determined to win, Garrett recalls.
“When she introduced herself, she said, “I’m Taylor Swift. I’m 11. I want to be a country singer.’ I told her, “I couldn’t even find my shoes when I was 11. Get out of here.”‘ Garrett laughs at the memory. He glances up at the platinum record that now hangs in his sheepskin store. It’s signed, “To Pat. Love, Taylor.”
Garrett says Swift’s success is a surprise. And it isn’t.
Of all Swift’s extraordinary characteristics — poise and charm, beauty and intelligence — her voice wasn’t one of them, he says. She’d often sing a little off key and lost more karaoke contests than she won. But “she had the spark; she had the drive,” Garrett says. And she had a family who supported her.
Scott Swift’s enthusiasm, in particular, nearly rivaled his daughter’s, Garrett says. The financial adviser from Merrill Lynch often solicited advice from Garrett, who had his own Nashville record deal back in the ’80s. He wanted to know how to make his little girl’s dreams happen. “I told him, “In Detroit, they make cars. In Hershey, they make bars. And in Nashville, they make stars,”‘ Garrett said.
Soon afterward, the Swifts — Scott and his wife, Andrea, Taylor, and her younger brother, Austin — packed up and moved South.
It wasn’t long before Sony Publishing hired 14-year-old Swift as a songwriter. By day, she was just another high schooler, attending homecoming and completing English projects, but after school let out, she was at the studio, scribbling lyrics intended for signed singers.
And it drove her crazy.
“I ended up begging them to hold my best ones,” she says. She couldn’t stand the thought of someone else singing about her own heart’s joys and aches. “I told them, “Trust me, some day, they’ll be worth something.”
No one ever sang her songs. They all ended up on her self-titled debut with Big Machine Records, a Nashville label that represents weighty artists such as Trisha Yearwood and Jack Ingram.
Swift says writing songs isn’t a choice but “something I have to do.” The melody for her breakout hit, “Tim McGraw,” for example, came to her while in ninth-grade math class. She excused herself, went to the bathroom and recorded it onto her phone, lest she forget by the time she could reach a guitar.
Most of her songs revolve around love. The barefoot-by-the-lake, roses-on-the-doorstep, slow-moonlit-dance kind of love.
“I like to write about personal experiences. … I like to write about guys and not change their names in songs,” she says, referring to her second single, “Teardrops on my Guitar,” about a Tennessee classmate named Drew that she had a crush on.
And Swift sells it well. With a heap of blonde ringlets and shiny blue eyes, she has a freshly scrubbed, girl-next-door appeal. She wears sundresses paired with a silver heart necklace and a charm bracelet Tim McGraw and Faith Hill gave her while on their 2007 tour.
Swift says it’s the honesty of her songwriting that hits a chord with her millions of fans. And the critics agree.
In 2007, the Nashville Songwriters Association International named Swift Songwriter/Artist of the Year. The Country Music Association honored her with the “Horizon Award,” bestowed on country’s rising stars. Past winners include Randy Travis, Garth Brooks and the Dixie Chicks. Swift sang her latest single, “Our Song” at the 2007 awards show.
Swift’s former choral director at Wyomissing Area Junior-Senior High School, Sharon Luyben, watched that show nervously. Luyben remembers thinking Swift’s legs looked “a little too skinny” and was worried she’d trip in her very high heels. “That’s the way I saw it,” she says — with “a mother’s eye.”
Luyben still sees the country star as the sweet, effusive sixth-grader who played Louisa in the school’s production of “The Sound of Music” and who unanimously won the junior high chorus’s “Wyo Idol” contest by rocking out on her 12-string guitar.
Among all of her old friends, Cara Wojciechowski may be her most loyal. The 14-year-old Wyomissing eighth-grader met Swift at age 9, when Cara played Marta in “The Sound of Music.”
Swift, who was four years her senior, took Cara under her wing. She’d sing for Cara, let her play with her guitar and console her when playground jests turned cruel. The Swifts and Wojciechowskis spent weeks at the shore together..
Cara has mapped her path to resemble her role model’s.
“It’s kind of scary, but I’ve based my whole life on what she’s done. I love country because of Taylor, obviously,” she says. “I play the guitar because of Taylor. I write music because of Taylor.”
This type of sentiment is echoed again and again by fans on Swift’s MySpace Web page, which has 29,293,872 hits and counting.
Swift says knowing how many people love her and look up to her keeps her grounded. “You can’t sell 2.5 million records without 2.5 million people helping you. The fans are the only reason I’m here.”

Taylor Alison Swift (born on December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Her discography spans multiple generations, and her narrative songwriting—often inspired by her personal life—has received critical praise and media coverage. Born in West Reading, Pennsylvania, Swift moved to Nashville at age of 14 to become a country artist. She signed a songwriting deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2004 and a recording contract with Big Machine Records in 2005. Her 2006 self-titled debut album made her the first female country singer to write or co-write a U.S. platinum-certified album entirely.
Swift's next albums, Fearless (2008) and Speak Now (2010) explored country pop. The former's "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me" were the first country songs to top the U.S. pop and all-genre charts, respectively. She experimented with rock and electronic styles on Red (2012), which featured her first Billboard Hot 100 number-one song, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", and eschew Off Shake It Offffd her country image in her synth-pop album, 1989 (2014), supported by chart-topping songs "Shake It Off", "Blank Space", and "Bad Blood". Media scrutiny inspired the urban-flavored Reputation (2017) and its number-one single "Look What You Made Me Do".
Exiting Big Machine, Swift signed with Republic Records in 2018 and released her seventh studio album, Lover (2019), followed by the autobiographical documentary Miss Americana (2020). She ventured into indie folk and alternative rock in her 2020 albums Folklore and Evermore, whose singles "Cardigan" and "Willow" topped the Hot 100. Swift began re-recording her first six albums after a dispute over their masters, re-releasing two in 2021—Fearless (Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version). The latter's "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" became the longest song to top the Hot 100. Her tenth album Midnights (2022) and it's lead single "Anti-Hero" broke numerous streaming records. Swift has self-directed music videos and films, such as All Too Well: The Short Film (2021), and had supporting roles in others.
Having sold over 200 million records globally, Swift is one of the best-selling musicians of all time. She is the only act to have five albums open with over one million copies sold in the US. Among her accolades are 11 Grammy Awards, including three Album of the Year wins; an Emmy Award; 40 American Music Awards; 29 Billboard Music Awards; and 84 Guinness World Records. Swift has been featured in rankings such as Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, Billboard's Greatest of All Time Artists, the Time 100, and Forbes Celebrity 100. Honored with titles such as Artist of the Decade and Woman of the Decade, Swift is an advocate for artists' rights and women's empowerment. Her music is credited witinfluenceen cing a generation of singer-songwriters.
Life and career
1989–2003: Early life and education Taylor Alison Swift were born on December 13, 1989, at the Reading Hospital in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Swift's father, Scott Kingsley Swift, is a former stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, and her mother, Andrea Gardner Swift (née Finlay), is a former homemaker who previously worked as a mutual fund marketing executive. Her younger brother, Austin, is an actor. She was named after singer-songwriter James Taylor and has Scottish and German heritage. Her maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, was an opera singer. Swift spent her early years on a Christmas tree farm that her father had purchased from one of his clients. Swift identifies as a Christian. She attended preschool and kindergarten at the Alvernia Montessori School, run by the Bernadine Franciscan sisters, before transferring to The Wyndcroft School. The family moved to a rented house in the suburban town of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, where she attended Wyomissing Area Junior/Senior High School. During her childhood, Swift spent summers at the beach in Stone Harbor, NJ, and performed in a local coffee shop.
At age nine, Swift became interested in musical theater and performed in four Berks Youth Theatre Academy productions. She also traveled regularly to New York City for vocal and acting lessons. Swift later shifted her focus toward country music, inspired by Shania Twain's songs, which made her "want to just run around the block four times and daydream about everything." She spent weekends performing at local festivals and events. After watching a documentary about Faith Hill, Swift felt sure she needed to move to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in music. She traveled with her mother at age eleven to visit Nashville record labels and submitted demo tapes of Dolly Parton and The Chick's karaoke covers. She was rejected, however, because "everyone in that town wanted to do what I wanted to do. So, I kept thinking to myself, I need to figure out a way to be different."
When Swift was around 12 years old, computer repairman and local musician Ronnie Cremer taught her to play guitar. He helped with her first efforts as a songwriter, leading her to write "Lucky You". In 2003, Swift and her parents started working with New York-based talent manager Dan Dymtrow. With his help, Swift modeled for Abercrombie & Fitch as part of their "Rising Stars" campaign, had an original song included on a Maybelline compilation CD and attended meetings with major record labels. After performing original songs at an RCA Records showcase, Swift, then 13 years old, was given an artist development deal and began making frequent trips to Nashville with her mother. To help Swift enter the country music scene, her father transferred to Merrill Lynch's Nashville office when she was 14 years old, and the family relocated to Hendersonville, Tennessee. Swift initially attended Hendersonville High School[32] before transferring to the Aaron Academy after two years, which better suited her touring schedule through homeschooling. She graduated one year early.
2004–2008: Career beginnings and first album
In Nashville, Swift worked with experienced Music Row songwriters such as Troy Verges, Brett Beavers, Brett James, Mac McAnally, and the Warren Brothers and formed a lasting working relationship with Liz Rose. They began meeting for two-hour writing sessions every Tuesday afternoon after school. Rose thought the sessions were "some of the easiest I've ever done. Basically, I was just her editor. She'd write about what happened in school that day. She had such a clear vision of what she was trying to say. And she'd come in with the most incredible hooks." Swift became the youngest artist signed by the Sony/ATV Tree publishing house, but left the Sony-owned RCA Records at the age of 14 due to the label's lack of care and them "cut[ting] other people's stuff". She was also concerned that development deals may shelve artists, and recalled: "I genuinely felt that I was running out of time. I wanted to capture these years of my life on an album while they still represented what I was going through."

Since op sucked here's the anti Tswift video debunking her being 'self made'.
Transcript of captions below cut.
Welcome back to "self made is a toxic myth".
At just 14 years old, Taylor Swift moved to Nashville, and quickly signed with Sony Music and Big Machine Records. She then released her self titled debut album which quickly went platinum in 2006. Since then, Swift has had nothing but smash hit after smash hit. Including making history this year as the first artist to dominate the entire Top 10 on the billboard Hot 100 with Anti Hero. Wow, that's amazing! But I guess this goes to show that as long as you're talented and work hard and follow your dreams, eventually-
Yeah, what that narrative leaves out is that Taylor Swift was born rich. Taylor Swift's father is Scott Swift, former stockbroker for Merrill Lynch. Her mother is Andrea Gardiner, a former mutual funds executive. Swift grew up on an 11 acre Christmas tree farm.
Okay, so what, she grew up wealthy. Does that mean she didn't work hard? No, that's not what it means? Well, does that mean she's not talented? Nope, that's not what it means.
What it means is that when she was 9, she was regularly flying to New York for acting and singing lesson. What it means is that when she was 13, she was working with a talent manager who helped her secure a development deal with RCA. What it means is that when she was 14, her family had the resources to relocate to Nashville, so she could work on music full time. What it means is that every day after school, Taylor is working with experienced hit songwriters. What it means is that when a DreamWorks A and R executive wanted to start his own record label, called Big Machine Records, Taylor's father brought 3 percent worth of stock in the company, for somewhere between 120 K and 300 K, incentivizing him to push her album.
The reason this series exists is to remind my fellow indie artists to take it easy on ourselves, when you feel like you're not progressing in your career fast enough, even though you're talented and hard working too. Because talent and hard work are not enough. You've just been programmed to think that they are, by an endless parade of folks who conveniently downplay how big a role their various privileges played in their success.
After all, it's a lot easier to be an Anti Hero in a lavender haze, when you own the lavenders.
