What lenses do you use for photography? Got a favourite?
I'm actually rebuilding my lens collection at the moment. I sold all but one lens years ago in a very depressive state and I have been regretting it as I've begun taking photos again.
So I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I would need to do the kinds of photography I enjoy most.
I do a lot of product or still life photography which requires a lot of detail. Especially when I get into the close up and macro realm. So I have been considering doing all primes rather than zooms, since those tend to be sharper at lower price points. Sharp zoom lenses can get crazy expensive.
My first lens that a lovely follower gifted me was the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens. This will be my primary portrait lens. And I can throw some extension tubes on to get some near macro shots.
I also have a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens. This is probably my favorite lens of all time. I call it my puppy lens. It was primarily what I used to capture photos of Otis. It only works on APS-C bodies, so if I upgrade to a full frame camera, I will have to replace it. Which I have mixed feelings about. It covers the 28-56mm range on a full frame body.
I want a wide lens for landscapes, so I was considering the Samyang 14mm F2.8.
And I want a proper macro lens at some point, and I'd like to have a more tele portrait lens, so the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 Art Macro lens could pull double duty.
Both are pretty affordable, especially used.
That would probably be all I need, but if I ever get my disability settlement figured out, I might look into a telephoto lens and maybe something in the 24mm range to fill in the gap between the 14mm and 50mm.
And if I ever come into a lot of money, I'd probably get the Sony A7R V with the holy trinity zooms. 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200.
Plus a macro lens... obviously. Laowa just released a macro lens kit that basically takes microscope objectives and mounts them on a camera. Those would be nuts to play with.
My 2 paragraph rule has gone completely off the rails.

Sony FE 28-70mm F2 GM Review
Sony can’t claim to have the world’s first 28–70mm zoom lens with background-blurring f/2 optics — Canon beat it to the punch by a few years — but that doesn’t detract from the stellar job the company’s optical team has done designing the FE 28–70mm F2 GM ($2,899.99). It matches the Canon RF 28–70mm F2 ($2,999.00) in angle and aperture but is smaller and a whole pound lighter. Its bright optics are ideal for creators who want more background blur and better results in very dim light, so wedding and event photographers may find good reason to prefer it over the stellar FE 24–70mm F2.8 GM II. The FE 28–70mm F2 GM earns our Editors’ Choice award for its ambitious optics and the gorgeous photos they bring to life. If you’re turned off by its price, don’t count out the $1,349 Sigma 28–45mm F1.8 DG DN Art as an alternative — its zoom range isn’t as expansive, but its photos are just as pretty.
Sony’s recent trend has been toward smaller, lighter zooms, and versus those others, the FE 28–70mm F2 GM qualifies. It measures 5.5 by 3.7 inches (HD) at 28mm, weighs a comparatively meager 2.0 pounds, and supports 86mm front filters. The 2.0-pound weight is made possible by Sony’s use of some of its exotic optics in the 20-element/14-group formula, which includes three extreme aspheric (XA), three standard aspheric, three Super ED, and one ED element. The lens extends slightly to zoom but maintains its center of gravity throughout the range, which is good news if you plan to use it with a powered gimbal for video.
It’s up to you to decide if your photo and video work requires an f/2, though I’ll speculate that it’s useful for creators who cover weddings and events, work in concerts or clubs, or are interested in night sky photography. The plusses for low-light work are obvious. When used at maximum aperture, the FE 28–70mm F2 GM gathers twice as much light as the FE 24–70mm F2.8 GM II (4.7 by 3.5 inches, 1.5 pounds) and other f/2.8 options, and four times that of an f/4 zoom like the FE 20–70mm F4 G (3.9 by 3.1 inches, 1.1 pounds).

Transitioning Gear: From Canon to Sony - A Journey of Adaptation and Savings
Preparing for an upcoming event in Leicester City, I decided to introduce a new addition to my camera gear. Before diving into the shoot, I wanted to familiarize myself with this latest equipment to ensure it seamlessly integrated into my setup.
My journey with photography spans across several iconic camera brands, starting from Minolta, Yashica, Practica, Olympus, and Pentax cameras from 1984 to 1991, transitioning to Nikon cameras from 1991 to 1998. However, the landscape shifted in 1998 when Canon stepped into the scene, bidding adieu to the familiar camera room. Canon swiftly became my preferred brand, solidifying that connection in 1999 with the Canon 400mm f2.8 L IS lens.
This lens became a staple, accompanying me to photograph international cricket matches for the Sri Lankan cricket team during my tenure at Reuters News Service. Its recommendation stemmed from multiple factors—excellent image quality, minimal optical distortion, a rapid aperture, image stabilization, and an agile autofocus system. While this lens thrived in sports reporting, my repertoire expanded to include everyday news, even extending to covering conflicts, utilizing three lenses: the Canon 16-35mm f2.8, 35-70mm f2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8. With a surplus of cameras matched to these lenses, I seamlessly interchanged cameras during shoots, minimizing lens changes.
However, as time progressed, my photographic needs underwent a metamorphosis. Weight reduction in equipment and a streamlined lens collection became paramount. Deliberating on this, Sony cameras emerged as a plausible option due to their lightweight build. Additionally, capturing bustling scenes without frequent lens changes became an appealing prospect.
Yet, I wasn’t prepared to compromise on lens quality or sacrifice the minimum aperture of f2.8. While lenses like Tamron 18-400mm f3.5-6.3, Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS, and Sigma 28-300mm f/5.6-6.3 offered a range, the varying aperture and potential compromise in image quality didn’t align with my standards.
Contemplating a transition to Sony while retaining my Canon equipment, I stumbled upon the 35-150mm 2-2.8 lens—an intriguing find. Among the options like Samyang AF 35-150 f/2-2.8 FE and Tamron 35-150 mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD, I found subtle performance differences despite a significant price gap and that feverable to Samyang. Opting for the Samyang, priced attractively on Amazon at £854.00 while Tamoron price £1486.00, seemed like the right choice after thorough research.
Thus, with the Samyang 35-150 f2-2.8, a Sony A7 Mark II, and a Godox Xpro at an Amazon special price, I made the purchase using allocated funds for new camera equipment.
Adapting from my Canon gear to Sony, I sought solutions for flash equipment. I found that using the Godox XPro to employ flash strobe lights for Sony, alongside the Godox SX 400 Studio Flash for Canon and Godox V1Hot Shoe, proved more cost-effective than purchasing new flash equipment. The entire conversion from Canon to Sony, inclusive of accessories, totaled £1585.00. This transition meant relinquishing the focal range of 35-16mm and 150-200mm, which I deemed acceptable given the substantial savings.
Considering the Amazon prices, the total expense for the Canon lenses (16-35mm f/2.8 = £1599.00, 24-70mm f/2.8 = £1947.00, and 70-200mm f/2.8 = £1624.00) would have amounted to £5170.00. Thus, by completing a full Canon to Sony conversion, I managed to meet my requirements while saving £3585.00.
With my setup primed, I am now geared up to capture the event in Leicester City next weekend, all with the convenience of a single lens.

What is the best lens for wedding photography?
Wedding pictures are particular in that it encompasses numerous genres of pictures: fashion, portrait, architectural, product, macro, family, and every so often even journey pictures. Few genres call for extra from photographers and their gear.
Here is a subjective listing of 6 must-have lenses for any given wedding ceremony that the best wedding photographers in Madurai recommend.
1. 70-200mm
This is my preferred lens. It creates lovely bokeh (blur) at f/2.eight, and the compression you get while you’re zoomed in from 150-200mm offers your photo a glance that’s tough to gain with some other lens. It additionally lets you get in near the motion without disrupting the moment.
DSLR Options
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens

2. 50mm

3. 24-70mm
The versatility of the 24-70mm zoom lens is crucial for smaller spaces. For example, a tea rite at a Vietnamese wedding ceremony is typically held in a dwelling room. The 70-200mm might be too compressed for this situation, and the 50mm might now no longer offer sufficient versatility, as you usually don’t have lots of room for movement.

Canon Project Part #2- Creating Color with Off Camera Flash- Canon EOS R with the RF 28-70mm lens by Jason Lanier
Welcome to Part 2 of the Canon Project, a series of videos related to our time using the Canon EOS R. In Part 2 we showcase a workshop and shoot we did in Helen, Georgia in conjunction with an event we were doing for PPA (Professional Photographers of America) for their Georgia Chapter (GPPA).
**Links to Gear Used in This Shoot**
*Canon EOS R- https://bhpho.to/2U8W4Cd
*Canon RF 28-70mm lens- https://bhpho.to/2FCH9pI
*Godox AD 600 Pro- https://bhpho.to/2FH9gnu
The location for this video was the Bus Graveyard which is a REALLY cool place to shoot. This was Day 3 of our 4 day workshop that I was teaching for the PPA members and on this day the group asked me to demonstrate a shoot from start to finish as well as give them a heads up on how I recorded my Youtube videos.
So, that’s what my Assistant/Muse Emily and I did! You can follow her on Instagram at www.instagram.com/em.explores
For this shoot we used the Canon EOS R with the RF 28-70mm lens. A lens that quickly found it’s way into my creative heart. It’s one of my favorite lenses on the planet at this point.
But we just didn’t shoot in a cool location with a great model and a new camera/lens. We also wanted to illustrate the difference that using flash can make when shooting in conditions that aren’t ideal for lighting. There is nothing better than the best natural light. But that' only exists for about 1 hour a day. And that’s only if it happens to be facing the direction that you want to shoot.
So sometimes you need to have the ability to ADD light to your scenes to be able to capture what you or your clients want or need to create. Sometimes we don’t have the luxury of picking the time when we shoot. Sometimes we have to make our own light.
In this video I show the difference between the two, demonstrating images side by side showing images taken with flash vs. images taken with natural light. Take a look for yourself by checking out the images below:
The images with flash have much more light and color. Because color = light in the world of photography. I purposely chose to make this Part 2 of the project because Part 1 shows a natural light shoot done correctly which has plenty of color and light. But that’s only because it was shot at the ideal time of day.
Below are images from the shoot:
For this shoot I have to say the Canon EOS R did exceptionally well. Focus wasn’t as fast as I’m used to with my Sony cameras, but for a portrait session like this one it was more than fine. The color rendering and effect on skin tones is really nice.
And that LENS. WOW, the RF 28-70mm f/2 is just a pleasure to shoot. There will be people who complain about it’s size and weight. But for me if you want awesome results you shoot awesome glass. And that’s one thing that Canon has done right with their mirrorless system. They are bringing out ultra professional, high grade glass. Far better than the offerings made by the Nikon Z system and far better than what Sony brought out when it first rolled out it’s mirrorless cameras.
The Canon also did much better shooting flash than the Nikon Z. It didn’t require me to do anything special to shoot in HSS (High Speed Sync) mode which was great since all of these images were taken in HSS with the exception of the natural light shot.
I truly hope you enjoy the content. If you missed Part 1 of the Canon Project which is a Natural Light Shoot done in Death Valley using the RF 24-105mm lens, you can check it out now by clicking below:
Thank you so much for watching and make sure to check out our upcoming parts of the Canon Project where we explore things like Black Light, LED, LED flash and more! We thank you for joining us and invite you to click on NOTIFICATIONS and the SUBSCRIBE button on my Youtube Channel.
See you next time!

12 Best Canon Lenses For Wedding Photography
Best Lenses For Shooting Weddings
The color making is saturated and contrast. At f/2. 8, the lens is sharp in the entire zoom diapason and has a low distortion level. Vignetting shows up only at an open aperture, flare defense is at a high level. Photographed with Canon 24-70mm f/2. 8L II Wide-angle lenses for wedding event photography need to be treated with extreme care due to the fact that many of the lenses of this type have geometric distortions, which are unacceptable for weddings.
At f/1. 4, vignetting is visible. The lens comes from the line of expert optics and varies from the more youthful variation with the f/2 technically enhanced construct, which has advanced optics. The lens speed is a whole action above, but it is 3 times more costly, half longer and weighs twice as much.

Experience a beautiful timelapse journey through the amazing landscapes of Scotland. In this film about the Scottish Highlands you will experience places like Glencoe, The Storr, Quiraing, Fairy Pools and many other places on the Isle of Skye. The shots are made in May 2019 where I had the pleasure to travel around the Scottish Highlands for two weeks. I had the pleasure to experience the spectacular Isle of Skye with a sunrise at the Storr, a long hike and lot of mist at the Quiraing and the beautiful Fairy Pools. In Glencoe I experienced the lakes Glencoe Lochan and Lochan Urr, Glen Etive with amazing still water, had an interesting and demanding climb to the top of Ben Nevis which is the highest mountain in UK and finally made a timelapse at the Glenfinnan Viaduct with the steam train known from Harry Potter.
