So I plan to make a post summarising my thoughts prior to SxS Gens in the next few days and I’ll go more in depth about my thoughts on this there, but I want to quickly address one criticism I’ve seen based on Dark Beginnings.

The gist of the complain is: “Why is Shadow dwelling on Maria again?”

I guess the complaint comes from the fact that in Heroes and 06, he appears to stop focusing on Maria and instead focuses on his own destiny. And I definitely like that about him! I personally don’t think that resolve is gone, either. Shadow even says he’s going to learn how to harness his new powers. If he was stuck in the past, he would thoroughly reject the Doom Powers - we saw in Dark Beginnings that he hates the idea of being part of the Black Arms.

Also, the guy has PTSD. Even if he has worked through the trauma, it won’t entirely go away. He had a nightmare/vision because of the timeline hiccup situation, so of course he’s going to be thinking about Maria. And since she appears to be back in Gens, of course he is going to relive those experiences. Heck, assuming the game takes the direction I think it will (again, I’ll go into more depth in a later post), he is going to have to learn to move past his trauma in a very literal way if he has to choose between Maria and fixing the timeline.

So while I understand that some people may be bored that Shadow keeps reliving his trauma and being stunted by his loss of Maria, I feel it misses a huge part of his character - Shadow has PTSD. People with PTSD may get better at coping with their trauma, but it doesn’t mean what happens to them will go away, and it doesn’t mean they won’t ever struggle with that trauma ever again. Insisting that Shadow needs to get over his trauma of Maria dying is ignorant at best and highly insensitive at worst. Yes, he’s a fictional character, but I imagine there are plenty of people who resonate with Shadow because of his PTSD.

ive joked about it before but man i really am the only person on earth who remembers the gun commander is a character that exists arent i . because the other day when the shadow panel was happening and the voice actors were talking about their characters and how they were eachothers only friend and maria was completely isolated from other people i was like What about the gun commander . and i havent seen anyone else point the contradiction out . lmao

All the references of the early 2000s Xtreme era. Rocket Power, Sonic Riders, Goofy movie etc. I love the characters’ expression of being a Shark. I didn’t really see a lot of joyful expressions for Shark Mobians but I’d like to think Speckle has her own charm.
