Ramya to let her art do the talking - She is launching her YouTube channel called 'Ramya Nambeesan Encore' Versatile actress and singer Ramya Nambeesan is all set to take the avatar of a YouTube host. She is launching her YouTube channel called 'Ramya Nambeesan Encore' "It is not the run-of-the-mill kind channels you come across. Being an artiste, I want to explore a plethora of content through the art forms I am familiar with - like music, dance and drama," is how she begins her conversation with DC. Speaking about how the idea originated, she says, "Recently, I was going through Wayanad and saw a few kids singing the folklore Kampala Paatu. I was totally floored. The song, Sadda Haq, is a soundtrack used in Bollywood film ‘Rockstar’.  As the name of the film suggests that the film is about a rock star and his story, therefore the music used in this song is also rock music, where the lead character of the film; that is a rock star, is performing live in front of the audience. The video starts with the opening shot of news headlines, along with background music, that tells us that the main character of the film has been kept under custody due to his misbehavior. This further creates a direct link with the song, whose literal lyrics translate into ‘sadda haq, ithe rakh’ (It is our right, keep it here or give us our rights).

There is no dance in the music video, just a band performing live, just like concerts.

Narrative based: The music video has a story attached to it. It shows a rock star and how his life has turned up to the point where he has become so disturbed and annoyed due to the constant questioning of media, his seniors along with his love life going down and family life, which has been destroyed a long time ago. After all this experience, he has been kept into custody because of misbehaving with the official authorities and, now, he is asking everyone to give him his right which he deserves. Therefore, it attracts the audience through a mixture of powerful lyrics, strong vocals and harsh music; creating a relationship between the audience and the artist.

Genre: Soundtrack, Rock Music The genre of the music video is soundtrack, since it is a part of a Bollywood film, i.e. ‘Rockstar’. In addition to that, as the film revolves around the story of a rock star, Rock music has been used throughout the song.

Prelude/Opening:

Although the music video is about a band performing live, in front of an audience, on a stage, however the video does not starts directly by focusing on the band. It starts by an extreme close up shot on the newspaper headlines, along with a loud music being played from the electric guitar, about the lead singer of the band, who has been arrested by the authorities for getting violent with the media and as well as the authorities. Therefore, from the very opening shot of the video, the music director has made an attempt to take the audience into the right direction by diverting the audience’ attention towards the issue of prison and justice; which is exactly what the singer is asking everyone in the video to give.

Ideology:

Stereotypes – If a person is different from other individuals and is not following the standard way; asking to give him justice, then he is considered to be against the law and the authorities.

Justice – A person is fed up from all the negative things going on in his life, including his family relations, personal relations and as well as the constant interference of media especially when one is at the lowest point in his life. Therefore, that person is asking for justice in a sense to leave him alone, let him do whatever he wants and try to turn him into a robot by telling him what he should be doing and what not.

Freedom – the lead character in the song is asking for justice in order to get freedom from everyone, including rules, laws, mindset of people etc.

 Target Audience:

The target audience includes those actors or artists who have gone through something like this, when one feels as if he/she does not have any personal space or personal life left. Secondly, media and authorities. Lastly, everyone in the society who expects someone to behave in a certain way or else he/she will be considered as a criminal and those who do not act in the way the society does.

Justice and Freedom– the lyrics of the songs and the expressions (of anger, aggression, frustration) through which the character portrays this song represent everyone who is seeking for justice but has not been given yet.

Dreamers’ vs Society – As the lyrics say ‘marzi say jeene ki bhi main kya tm sab ko arzi du’ which means that ‘do I have to seek permission from you to live my own life the way I want to.  

Media and Authorities – the video shows how media (journalists) eats up a celebrity’s personal space to the point where he/she aggressive and violent. In addition to that, if a celebrity gets violent then he/she is arrested by the authorities as shown in the first few seconds of the video through the headlines and also some shows where the character is in prison. Moreover, even after all this, the journalists do not leave that person and try to turn his situation into headlines to earn profits, as is shown in this video where a journalist is seen standing in the characters house while he is in prison.

Helplessness – the video also shows that in bad times, a person is on his/her own as there are clips which show that the producers and directors who have worked with the artist refuse to give any comments on the issue.

Musician/Rock star – All of the things, discussed, are portrayed by a rock star, a dreamer who has some desires and wishes to live his life according to his own will and to have freedom.

Light – The lighting used in the video is natural light, from the sun, since it shows a live performance, more likely a concert that is taking place in an open place rather than an auditorium or a stadium.

There is a clear relation between the lyrics and visuals such that the lyrics are regarding justice, a person asking for justice where as in the picture we can see the door of a prison in the background which immediately put thoughts into the minds of the audience regarding crime, laws, rules and regulations, justice and freedom etc. Similarly there is a constant connection throught the music video in others scenes as well

Relationship between sounds and visuals: Mostly in live performances and concerts, singers and musicians use loud, fast and harsh music to excite the audience. A similar concept has been applied in this music video as well which shows a rock star performing live in front of the audience and is using loud and aggressive music or, in other words, rock music.

Demands of Record Label:

In order to draw a connection between the audience and the artist, there are numerous close up shots in the music video which had a especial effect and connection between both as close up shots portray something that is meaningful for the artist.

Reference to the notion of looking:

The character that is playing the role of a rock star is lip syncing the song but he does not looks in the camera lens directly because for him the audience is no us, the viewers, but the one that is shown in the music video. That is why is looking at his audience on the set rather than the camera lens.

There is a strong relationship between the narrative and the performance. The music video has not been made in one-go. There are several shots taken from different angles and there are several cuts from narrative to the performance.

Technical Codes:

Lighting: the overall lighting in the video is natural light, from the sun since it shows a live performance done in an open space rather than an auditorium. Therefore, to give a realistic effect, natural light has been used. However there are a few scenes within the video where artificial light has been used, such as the scenes where a character is shown talking to the media, the rock star is shown sitting in the prison etc.

Since the video is not shot in one go, there are several scenes along with flashback scenes as well, therefore a lot of editing has done in this music video. The video starts with a focus on newspapers and journalists, then went on the an artist in jail, then towards the live performance after which it shows a flashback in between the song and finally back to the live performance again. Therefore the scenes would have not been shot in a sequence as well. Firstly, the scene of the live performance would have been shot, and then the ones with the media and journalists followed by the prison scenes and the flashback in the editing software and then merged together with the help of transitions, after effects, color gradient etc.

‘Anu Malik called me home’ – Caralisa Monteiro on the composer | Hindi Movie News

After singers Sona Mohapatra and Shweta Pandit, the latest female singer to join the bandwagon of those speaking up against composer Anu Malik — who has been accused of sexual harassment as part of the #MeToo campaign — is Bollywood playback singer Caralisa Monteiro.

Talking exclusively to BT, she said, “There were always people. I just didn’t play into their ways and always believed my voice is why they will always want me back. So have never been abused or violated. I’ve had a specific incident with Anu Malik. I had to tell him that I only work in a studio. This happened almost 15 years ago when I was starting out. I never worked with him since.”

Explaining the incident, the singer, known for hits like ‘Nashe Si Chadh Gayi’ (Befikre, 2016), ‘Ranga Re’ (Fitoor, 2016) and ‘Tumse Hi Tumse’ (Anjaana Anjaani, 2010), among others, said, “Anu Malik wanted me to come over to his place to jam with him. He was insistent that I came home as that’s how it was done. And I told him if you need me to sing a song, I’m a professional recording artiste, so I will meet you at the studio, take the brief and then track. So when I met him later, I went with my dear friend Clinton (Cerejo, singer), because I was uncomfortable going alone. Everyone knew the kind of individual Anu Malik was/is.”
