It’s an ethereal hyperpop track with lots of breakbeats! With the feeling of being  introspective, sad, full of yearning, and is romantic af. it’s crazy to finally be sharing music with the world - it’s been a long time coming ◡̈

There's nothing more thrilling than hearing your music on the radio for the first time! Yesterday, my new song, STANDARDS by Crystal Penny (sisters Crystal Wilson Blackmon and Penni Wilson), produced by Ivan Hampden Jr., was featured on Richard Marzetti's Soul Life program on Solar Radio Radio, the UK's #1 music station bringing you soul, jazz, funk, soulful house, R&B, disco and more. A 90s dating experience from years living in San Francisco inspired the lyrics when I discovered how music and the lyrics we listen to shape our thoughts and expectations about love. I'll have much more to share about the song and the talented collaborators I worked with when STANDARDS is released in mid-April. James Morrison Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson

How fortuitous that my first show back after an 8-week hiatus was with the stunningly soulful James Morrison––actor, writer, filmmaker, musician, husband, father, fellow, and stellar human. James was Chicken soup for my post-COVID soul. Discovering just before we went on the air that my treasured friend, Christinna Guzman had passed from cancer opened the door to an emotionally charged conversation about relationships…parent/child, James’ son, Seamus, is a brain cancer survivor… love partnerships, how James and Riad have thrived through their 35 years together, including through their son’s illness… art, which Christinna championed, and shared with me and oft shot for me, including my Women Who Write Literary Salons, and these Game Changers talk shows, where James has read and sung numerous times and Christinna and I bore witness. To honor her and James’ talents, James gifted us with a reading from his show, Leave Your Fears Here, sang, at my fervent request, his brilliant, Selfish Man, about a certain someone who continues to refuse to not grab the headlines, and then read from his brand new show, Satan’s Wild Animal Circus of Agony: A Five Ring Memoir, a most meaningful piece about his father’s end of life. Powerful, moving, important. 

We talked about sobriety and recovery, a passion James and I share, about adapting, growing, changing, and allowing space to be wrong. We talked about his and Riad’s documentary, Showing Up, an unprecedented look at the audition, with some of our most accomplished working actors reflecting on the process and how it affects them. Nathan Lane, Sam Rockwell, Eli Wallach, and Kristin Chenoweth are a few of those interviewed. I just watched it again and I’m rethinking this whole return to acting thing. It’s a wonderful film, raw and moving, and so damn honest. Like James himself. 

I adore this man and every moment in his exceptional company. I’ve said before, sitting down with 24's Bill Buchanan, AKA, James Morrison, is like wrapping myself up in my softest, warmest, coolest, comfiest, cutest, silkiest pajamas, and settling in for an easy, breezy, fun, loving, memorable night. This one had the added bonus of being a bear hug of support, comfort, and grace. I’m forever grateful for his friendship.

Gorilla Pulp, 'tufo rock' d'autore

Se Zodiac Minwarp and love reaction si fondessero con Cult e Monster Magnet, probabilmente il risultato sarebbero i Gorilla Pulp. Arrivati al loro terzo disco, i nostri presentano un nuovo singolo che preannuncia il prossimo full lenght. Don’t jump the fence, questo il titolo della nuova canzone, conferma la vena stilistica dei nostri. Stoner con fortissime venatura hard rock e influenze anni ’70. Storicizzando la miscela, i riferimenti sono le band sopra citate. Ciò che subito salta all’orecchio è la produzione. Molto più accorta e potente rispetto ai precedenti lavori. I Gorilla Pulp pare abbiano trovato il proprio suono. Ed è un suono pesante, che sa di serto, di sole, di serpenti a sonagli. Il pezzo parte con un riff che potremmo definire tipicamente rock and roll. Subito dopo arriva la pesantezza stoner, arriva il calore che stende. Molto azzeccato l’utilizzo della voce. Ottima per il genere e per la band. Una voce potente, non urlata più del necessario. Suadente quando occorre. Menzione anche alla sezione ritmica, mai stanca o stancante. Il brano nei suoi 4 minuti e 34 ha anche il tempo per un cambio di passo più che apprezzabile e azzeccato. Verso metà canzone, prima del solo, fa capolino uno scorcio psichedelico ’70 style. Questo introduce il solo di chitarra che rispecchia perfettamente lo stile. Wha, non mille note, quelle giuste suonate nella maniera migliore per il contesto.

Come sempre un solo brano non è sufficiente a dare un punto di vista che sia esauriente ed esaustivo. Possiamo tuttavia dire che come biglietto da visita per il nuovo lavoro, i Gorilla Pulp si trovano in grande spolvero. Ottima forma, songrwriting ispirato, suoni ottimi. Quale miscela migliore potrebbe mettere nella prospettiva per un disco di sicuro interesse?
