There's nothing more thrilling than hearing your music on the radio for the first time! Yesterday, my new song, STANDARDS by Crystal Penny (sisters Crystal Wilson Blackmon and Penni Wilson), produced by Ivan Hampden Jr., was featured on Richard Marzetti's Soul Life program on Solar Radio Radio, the UK's #1 music station bringing you soul, jazz, funk, soulful house, R&B, disco and more. A 90s dating experience from years living in San Francisco inspired the lyrics when I discovered how music and the lyrics we listen to shape our thoughts and expectations about love. I'll have much more to share about the song and the talented collaborators I worked with when STANDARDS is released in mid-April. Right now, you can hear STANDARDS on Soul Life on MixCloud (at the 1:16 mark)

James Morrison Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson
How fortuitous that my first show back after an 8-week hiatus was with the stunningly soulful James Morrison––actor, writer, filmmaker, musician, husband, father, fellow, and stellar human. James was Chicken soup for my post-COVID soul. Discovering just before we went on the air that my treasured friend, Christinna Guzman had passed from cancer opened the door to an emotionally charged conversation about relationships…parent/child, James’ son, Seamus, is a brain cancer survivor… love partnerships, how James and Riad have thrived through their 35 years together, including through their son’s illness… art, which Christinna championed, and shared with me and oft shot for me, including my Women Who Write Literary Salons, and these Game Changers talk shows, where James has read and sung numerous times and Christinna and I bore witness. To honor her and James’ talents, James gifted us with a reading from his show, Leave Your Fears Here, sang, at my fervent request, his brilliant, Selfish Man, about a certain someone who continues to refuse to not grab the headlines, and then read from his brand new show, Satan’s Wild Animal Circus of Agony: A Five Ring Memoir, a most meaningful piece about his father’s end of life. Powerful, moving, important.
We talked about sobriety and recovery, a passion James and I share, about adapting, growing, changing, and allowing space to be wrong. We talked about his and Riad’s documentary, Showing Up, an unprecedented look at the audition, with some of our most accomplished working actors reflecting on the process and how it affects them. Nathan Lane, Sam Rockwell, Eli Wallach, and Kristin Chenoweth are a few of those interviewed. I just watched it again and I’m rethinking this whole return to acting thing. It’s a wonderful film, raw and moving, and so damn honest. Like James himself.
I adore this man and every moment in his exceptional company. I’ve said before, sitting down with 24's Bill Buchanan, AKA, James Morrison, is like wrapping myself up in my softest, warmest, coolest, comfiest, cutest, silkiest pajamas, and settling in for an easy, breezy, fun, loving, memorable night. This one had the added bonus of being a bear hug of support, comfort, and grace. I’m forever grateful for his friendship.

"Love Me, Love The Life I Lead" from the album "Elvis (Fool)," released on July 16, 1973
youtube
LYRICS Songrwriters: Roger John Reginald Greenaway / Tony Macaulay I am not a wise man neither am I a fool But what I am, the way the good Lord made me Though I need you more than you may ever understand I can't wear a face that will betray me Oh, if you're gonna love me, love the life I lead Need the things I need, don't try to change me If you're gonna take me, take me for what I am I can't be another man, I can't be free 'cause the life I lead is the life I lead Money in my pocket never seems to last too long I've gambled on the way and drowned my sorrows Though God knows, I can't pretend it's better on my own I can't promise you a new tomorrow Oh, if you're gonna love me, love the life I lead Need the things I need, don't try to change me If you're gonna take me, take me for what I am I can't be another man, I can't be free 'cause the life I lead is the life I lead Oh, if you're gonna love me, love the life I lead Need the things I need, don't try to change me If you're gonna take me, take me for what I am I can't be another man, I can't be free 'cause the life I lead is the life I lead If you're gonna love me, love the life I lead Need the things I need, don't try to change me If you're gonna take me, take me for what I am I can't be another man, I can't be free 'cause the life I

What I would like to be in the future?
I don't know actually ? ....
maybe a songrwriter or an artist?
I don't know .... but I think I'll try writing songs.... And if I succeed in that ... maybe I'll ask friends to create a melodie. . . .
or I know! In fact I want to be a youtuber or just a blogger!
Like being famous for what I do, not who I am.

Sanjna presents "Breaks Like a Heart"
Sanjna’s songwriting shines a light on the melancholic beauty of the human experience, echoing the passion of life’s growing pains, transforming moments, lessons, and feelings into an intricate landscape, immersing listeners in a soulful symphony
Tumblr media
SANJNA:
She is a poetic lyricist who cleverly employs metaphor, storytelling, and scene setting to create emotionally evocative songs. Her artistic aesthetic is informed both by her technical training in jazz, pop, art song, opera, and classical Indian music, and her passion for classic rock, pop, indie, and pop soul. Sanjna’s heartfelt and evocative vocals have garnered favorable comparisons to Adele, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, and Dua Lipa.
The award-winning artist and Harvard sophomore’s music represents a polymath’s musical journey with boundless creativity that bends, blends and defies constraints across genres, cultures, technology, and academic disciplines. A singer, songrwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, she embarks on a sensory exploration igniting synesthetic experiences, painting a canvas where sound and color converge. Sanjna’s songwriting shines a light on the melancholic beauty of the human experience, echoing the passion of life’s growing pains, transforming moments, lessons, and feelings into an intricate landscape, immersing listeners in a soulful symphony.

Today Live, James Morrison! I deeply adore him. As an actor, writer, filmmaker, musician, most importantly, as a husband, father, friend, fellow, and stellar human.
I first remember James as CTU’s director Bill Buchanan on 24. He’d been around long before that. He did tenure on my beloved Private Practice, was a regular on HawthoRNE, appeared on Frasier, Quantum Leap, The X-Files, JAG, Murder She Wrote, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, to name some. James was a regular on the revamped Twin Peaks, was featured on NCIS, Major Crimes, Castle, The Twilight Zone, recently, Intersection, has three projects in the cooker, is as adept on stage, the recipient of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance and three Drama-Logue Awards… the man works. And, he plays. Like an angel. A singer/songwriter, I met James about 10 years ago when he graced Women Who Write and my living room. James was on the bill with Bob Cowsill and Ed Asner. It’s a day that remains at the top of my top for the salon’s 12 + years. I'll be pleading with him to treat us to his, Selfish Man, about, guess who, who just happens to be making headlines, yet again.
Listen here: http://jpmorrison.com/blogs/james/new-song-selfish-man
James, and his wife Riad Galayini, co-directed and produced the feature documentary Showing Up, an unprecedented look at the audition, with some of our most accomplished working actors reflecting on the process and how it affects them. Nathan Lane, Sam Rockwell, Eli Wallach, and Kristin Chenoweth are a few of those interviewed. Just watched it and I’m rethinking this whole return to acting thing. It’s a wonderful film, raw and moving, and so damn honest. Most recently, James developed and performed his one-man play, Leave Your Fears Here at the Ojai Playwrights Conference. His plays have also been produced and/or developed at the Sundance Institute, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Playwrights' Center of Minneapolis, L.A. TheatreWorks, The MET Theatre, Two Parts Theatre Company, The Classical Theatre Lab, City Theatre in Miami, The Road Theatre, The Mojo Ensemble, The Wooden O, The Philadelphia Fringe Festival and the Sal
t Lake Acting Company where he has directed several plays including those by Sam Shepard, John Robinson, Larry Shue, and Beth Henley.
James is a great big peach of a man. Delicious in spirit, gigantic in talent, and oh so easy on the ears and eyes. Can’t wait to spend time in his spectacular company… see him… and, hear him. Lucky me. Lucky us!
