Meet the Crew of THE TEMPEST: Micah Cover

Please introduce yourself! Tell us a bit about you and your role in The Tempest.

I am a teacher, producer, lecturer, writer and performer of the art of magic. I am this production's Magic Consultant. It is the third time I have been a Magic Consultant for a production of The Tempest, including the time I myself got to play Prospero.

Tell us a bit about your history with The Porters and with Shakespeare. What’s been your favorite role to play thus far? I played the Player King in the Porters’ Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead and Hamlet when they played in rep. I have also been in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo & Juliet, As You Like It, Henry V, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar, Merry Wives of Windsor and Much Ado About Nothing.

Magic plays a central role in the play. Prospero wields it to his own ends, and it can easily be seen as a metaphor for Shakespeare’s art as a writer. How do you define magic? What role does it play in your life?

I am a professional magician from the Magic Castle. Magic is the feeling of wonder people share where, even if only for a moment, anything is possible.

What is your favorite quote from the play?

This thing of darkness I acknowledge mine.
