New York City’s annual Easter Bonnet Festival, a celebration that dates back to the 1870s, is a celebration of craftiness and creativity.
The event began as a post-mass stylish fashion show, but it’s a spectacle of floral whimsy and pageantry. Read More: https://divabetic.org/2023/04/10/easter-bonnet-festival-on-fifth-avenue/

Happy Birthday to Sade Adu!
With over 60 million albums sold worldwide, 4 Grammys, and holding a CBE, Sade is one of the most successful British female artists in history,
She’s inspiring us to talk about 'THE SWEETEST TABOO' aka 'SUGAR' on this podcast.
Sugar is everywhere. But do we really understand the impact it has on our diabetes health? If asked to name sugary foods, you may think of sweets, chocolate, sodas, table sugar, and perhaps fruit. But sugar also appears in savory foods such as ready meals, soups, salads, and sauces; as well as ‘healthy’ foods such as breakfast cereals and yogurt. Furthermore, starches such as bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes also convert to sugar in our bloodstream, having the same impact on our bodies. These ‘hidden sugars’ can add a surprising amount to our daily intake. Guests include Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDCES, Tameka Milline, Divabetic Image & Style Icon Catherine Schuller. Kathy Dolgin aka 'High Voltage', and Stephanie McKendree.
Throughout the podcast, we will feature music from 'The Essential Sade' album courtesy of SONY Music.

Mr. Divabetic hopes to  encourage you to not let diabetes dim your holiday spirit with musical inspiration from Mariah Carey.
Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” album is the best selling Christmas album of all-time.  “Merry Christmas” boasts a variety of musical arrangements, sounds and genres. Mariah Carey's goal during recording was to provide an album that would have a "Christmas feel", providing a mixture of soulful tracks, as well as fun and joyous holiday treats.
In the years since its original release, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has become established as a Christmas standard; it was once called "one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon.
Having diabetes shouldn't stop you from enjoying holiday celebrations and travel. With some planning and a little preparation, you can stay healthy on the road and at holiday gatherings with friends and family.
Preparation is the most important step in managing diabetes during holiday travel and festivities. Know what you'll be eating, how to enjoy a few traditional favorites while sticking with a healthy meal plan, how to pack necessary supplies for a trip, and you're ready to celebrate!
Guests include Poet Lorraine Brooks, the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, ‘Unleash Your Inner Diabetes Dominator’ Author Daniele Hargenrader, CEO of Insulcloud Jose Luis and Mama Rose Marie.
Throughout the podcast we will be playing musical selections from Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” album courtesy of SONY Music.

Thank you for all the heartfelt messages regarding my recent post about the upcoming Luther documentary. It's a thrill to see and hear how much he is still loved by so many.
I want everyone to know that I am NOT directly involved in the project.
My boss was a complex, multi-talented, multi-faceted, funny, smart, demanding, and generous person. I doubt a 90-minute or 2-hour documentary will be able to capture all the aspects of his life and career in a way that will appeal to and satisfy everyone. However, I will gladly still promote this documentary when it comes out because it was an honor and privilege to have worked for him. It still amazes me that I worked for him!
For the past 20 years, my life's focus has been to raise awareness for diabetes, self-care, the health complications related to mismanaged diabetes, and the need to take early action when experiencing a stroke. This is how I honor Luther's legacy. I encourage others to 'keep their house a home' by learning how to prevent and/or delay complications such as stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation from occurring.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the language around diabetes is critical to ending diabetes stigma, blame, and shame.
The organization surveyed more than 900 people with lived experiences of diabetes to learn about what effective diabetes language means for them.
Many people argue they should focus on finding a cure rather than language, but why can't they do both? Changing the way we speak to ourselves and others about diabetes is essential.

The happy healthcare host, Mr Divabetic raises awareness for diabetes in a fun, new way at the American Diabetes Association's largest Latino event of the year -- Feria de Salud, at St. Mary's Park in Bronx, NY. The annual Feria de Salud Festival offers free health screenings and education to South Bronx residents about diabetes. Play along with Mr. Divabetic as he challenges various American Diabetes Association staff members, Dr. Ileana Vargas - Rodriquez, Mimi Gonzalez BS, RN with the food game, 'Serve, Taste or Trash!' You might be surprised by the results. In the game, players are given three choices of fruits and vegetables. You must decide which one you'd serve, which one you'd taste and which one you'd trash. Before you decide to "trash" a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren't crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones. And the texture is crispy, rather than mushy. Mr. Divabetic is a 2011 WEGO Health Activist Award finalist and the happy healthcare host of Diva TalkRadio. Diva TalkRadio is Divabetic's dynamic free online and mobile podcast channel where tens of thousands of fans, followers and listeners turn to laugh a little and learn a lot. The channel features a line-up of live and archived programs and specials. Guests include health care professionals, beauty, image/style and fitness experts, entertainment industry leaders and VIPs: women and men living with, at risk of and affected by diabetes. Meet Mr. Divabetic on the red tomato carpet at Divabetic - Makeover Your Diabetes outreach event in Philadelphia, PA, Fashion's Night Out in New York, NY, Central Farm Market in Washington, DC, the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes Expo in Pittsburgh, PA and the Taking Control Of Your Diabetes Conferences & Health Fairs in San Diego, CA and Austin, TX in Fall 2012.

Nothing beats presenting diabetes outreach with DAZZLE at the Apollo Theater. One of my all-time favorite moments in Divabetic history was playing Serve, Taste, or Trash! Food Game at the Apollo Theater because it was an opportunity to combine honoring Luther’s musical legacy with diabetes wellness outreach.
The game’s initial goal was to allow confessed picky eaters to express dislike of certain fruits and vegetables and then challenge them to try them differently.  The game was born out of my dislike of peas.
Experts agree that we shouldn’t overwhelm ourselves with a plate full of new foods. Instead, serve familiar favorites and one new food you’re ready to try. Commit to just a few bites. You’ll still have something to eat if you don’t like it.
However, Serve, Taste, or Trash‘s aim morphed into raising awareness for the amount of added sugars in popular food and drinks.
On this episode of Divabetic’s podcast, we’re talking about ADDED SUGARS with musical inspiration from Sade.
Added sugars contribute calories to your diet but no essential nutrients.
Many people consume more sugar than they realize. Knowing how much sugar you consume is essential because our bodies don’t need sugar to function properly.
How Much ADDED SUGAR Is Too Much?

We're celebrating World Diabetes Day with musical inspiration from Aretha Franklin. There are many reasons that Aretha Franklin is the legend of legends, a groundbreaking singer with the fortitude to transcend race and genre, using that tremulous voice as the bulldozer to break down every barrier set up in her way.

I met up with one of my all-time favorite educators and friends, MaryAnn Nicolay, and her husband, David, at the 'Evening With Itzhak Perlman performance in Akron, OH, this week. MaryAnn and I have known each other for almost twenty years. We first met when she was the lead educator for our 'Divabetic-Makeover Your Diabetes' outreach program in Cleveland, OH. With MaryAnn's help and expertise, we presented our Diva brand of diabetes outreach to over 1,000 people. It was incredible! For several years, MaryAnn also presented and produced the highly successful Diva Club, a free monthly meeting for women at risk, affected by and living with diabetes, in Cleveland. Today, MaryAnn still actively participates in our annual Mystery podcast and Zoom programs. I'm so thankful for her support and friendship over the years. Her no-nonsense and friendly approach to educating and empowering people with diabetes has inspired me in many ways. I can't imagine Divabetic without her. She's been such an incredible friend and ally. I'm grateful that my hectic touring schedule has allowed me to see some of my all-time favorite divas in the various cities Divabetic has outreached to over the years.
