Starting a song translation for structure review (to see if I can pick out the transitive verb form from all of the additions and conjugations and whatnot). I’m learning quite a lot already.

Also started a Lingodeer page that’s actually going to be four pages. I’ve finished a lot of Lingodeer already but I’m going back for review before I start on the “Wishes” topic.

Aaannnddd a new KakaoTalk Chat Notes page. I have a ton of these scattered throughout my notebook(s). I just write down something if I don’t understand what they said or if someone else in the chat asks for an explanation of something and I couldn’t spit the answer out myself. Some notes also taken from other places (Tumblr, HelloTalk, Tandem, etc). A lot of it ends up being review and I have a lot of “Duh! I already knew that!” moments but it’s helpful nonetheless.

[SONG] Suzuki Airi - DISTANCE

So I spent the month of June tackling Suzuki Airi's debut album. I translated start again and Mikansei Girl last year when the album released in early June, but I hadn't been able to get around to translating the rest over the last year. I decided when posting these I'll go in order of the tracklist to keep things fairly organized.

The following is my translation of the song, along with notes about things I got stuck on or couldn't figure out, with the hope that others will pitch in and make corrections in the comments. :) It'll be a good learning experience for me and many others to see the notes and changes as things get figured out.

The parts I struggled with are bolded. My notes are in italics. At the end I've included a vocab list, which just includes vocab I either didn't already know or wanted to make note of it again as it's a word/phrase I didn't recognize well. I tend to pop these into a flashcard deck, so I recommend that!

(Does anyone know how to get coloured text?? I’ve been fiddling with codes but can’t get it working... would make this easier and more organized if I could colour the text).

Nico would whole-heartily watch Sanremo and Eurovision, rooting for Italy of course. Sanremo is like the largest and longest-running music festival in Italy, over 70 years now. I bet that Nico did scream or cry in happiness when Måneskin won Eurovision 2021 for Italy, their first win in about 30 years. This song gives me chills literally with how poetic the lyrics are. I feel that Nico would understand the lyrics and how he’s quite reserved around acquaintances to protect himself and how he thinks that he always got it wrong.

This song was written by Blanco about someone who had passed away. Nico would always think about Bianca and Jason (in my own fanon world, he is alive and well and is an older brother figure to Nico). Again, Blanco is an up and coming artist that Nico would like. I imagine that Nico has a singing voice similar to Blanco’s.

A headcanon of mine is Nico is classically trained and taught due to his background. His mother was the daughter of an Italian diplomat, and diplomats were once appointed from the upper aristocracy class, so he must have come from a wealthy aristocratic family and would probably have seen classical music performances and operas. He would have been taught how to play classical instruments like the piano and cello. Some of his music would be opera or classical pieces. This one is self-explanatory with the title « Isle of the Dead ». Some pieces that I would imagine him listening to are Danse macabre (Saint-Saens), Devil’s Trill sonata (Tartini), Chopin and Liszt piano pieces.

About women

I will now talk about identities. I know a lot of you have already talked about minorities especially women and I wanted to add my contribution.

Kazka is an Ukrainian band created in 2017 that participated in Ukraine’s X-Factor. Their song “Plakala” was a hit in Eastern countries (I discovered it while watching Romanian television). It has an English version, which is sweet, but probably because of rhymes lost its true meaning.

The song in its original language is about domestic violence. It was a very bold move for this band to raise awarness about this issue in a country (and I am here mentioning Ukraine but also Russia, where the song was in top chart) that is known for being quite violent towards women.

When we listen to this song, we tend to like the melody and rythm. But in order to avoid passive listening, I advise everyone to read a translated version of the lyrics and truly understand what Kazka meant there (and to join the fight against domestic violence of course! :P )
