Charlton Comics has a lot of characters we never talk about. Nevermind how the events of the crisis led to DC completely changing some of the characters. Captain Atom was completely changed from the original sixties character. Even getting a name change, as Allen Adam became Nathaniel Adam. At least Ted Kord and The Question and Peacemaker and all of them were mostly preserved.
But I know of at least one character we never talk about: The Son of Vulcan. A character much like Thor, except with explicit connections to the Roman Gods. Not Greek, specifically Roman. Considering Wonder Woman and most other comics characters based in myth are always Greek, it's cool to see Roman representation. Now I just wish DC would actually use this character. I want to see the Son of Vulcan pulled out of retirement and reused, damn it!

Crisis On Earth-Four.
Art by Alex Garcia, colors by David Stepp.
This would have made a great story for the annual summer crossover between the Justice League of America and the Justice Society of America, right after DC acquired the Charlton heroes in 1983. However, Crisis On Infinite Earths happened instead.

A character I'd really like to revive is Son of Vulcan. So basically, he was this war journalist who, getting really jaded watching the worst of humanity, stumbles into a temple to the Roman gods and curses them out for letting war exist. So Jupiter summons him and is like "We're gonna execute you for your hubris". But Vulcan comes to his defense, seeing himself in the disabled man and his hatred of Mars, and convinces Jupiter to let him live and be blessed by Vulcan's gifts. His weakness is that if he loses favor with Jupiter or Vulcan his powers are taken away.

Just watched TOS's episode Journey to Babel and there was a moment that had me giggling.
Around 5 minutes in, when Jim is giving Sarek a tour and Spock is not-so-inconspicuously sulking in the foreground with Amanda, Sarek says 'My wife, attend.' which we can presume is a Vulcan thing, probably a nice and polite way of reminding others who your mate is without all of the pre-Surak stabby-ness.
And then not even ten seconds later, when Spock turns to leave, Jim turns to him and says 'Mr. Spock, a moment if you please?'
And I can't help but see the little parallel. Its like Kirk felt the need to also show the room who his boyfriend is but copying Sarek, who Kirk only learned two minutes ago was Spock's dad, would have been a bit too cheeky. First meeting with the in-laws and all that.
Plus Jim calls Spock over to explain the Enterprise's computers which Sarek does not need to know about. Almost as if Jim had to come up with a reason on the spot to explain away why he just called Spock over like Sarek did with Amanda.
Double plus, Sarek and Amanda are Vulcan kissing the entire agonising trip Spock takes to walk over to Jim. Like, not a light brush of the fingers, those babies are firmly pressed and not budging. And they don't stop until Sarek has insulted Spock and sent him away. Its more a makeout session than a kiss.
So, anyway, Jim calls Spock over both because he's maybe a little intimidated by Sarek and wants his best friend/boyfriend to support him and also because, no matter the species, men behave similarly when it comes to certain things like mates and Jim was not about to be shown up on his own ship.

The fandom seems to hold the opposite view but to me, this bit in MGS2 makes it clear Snavid has some belief in deities, a higher power. Snake was affected by Vulcan Raven and his words in MGS1 and he had gotten spiritual and somewhat religious in general after settling in Alaska.

Shore Leave of the Enterprise on Vulcan
Two vulcans looking in the distance:
"Who do you think that is", the first one says, pointing at another Vulcan standing near another humanoid figure in a Starfleet uniform.
"Hard to tell from this distance", the second one responds, just as the Vulcan they were observing grabs the hand of the figure they now could tell was a human man.
"Ah, Spock son of Sarek." They both conclude at the overly open PDA.

Came across a faux interview between Gene Roddenberry and Sarek (the actor who plays Sarek is playing Sarek) and I think Sarek & Amanda's mad scientist relationship is so goddamn interesting - TERRIBLE parents ("We felt Spock's torture of course but Amanda and I had a dream. One that justified even the risk of our precious son's life and sanity. What point is there in any life, surviving, unless it has meaning?") but my God...TALK about matching someone's freak. I also like the picture Sarek paints of Vulcan society, (which I've been rambling about recently) it's a very specific portrayal of Vulcans and how they view emotions which I don't think is carried over into much canon - wherein somebody emoting at someone else is seen as almost a hateful act.
#he also says that Vulcans carry their children for 12 months instead of 9 v_v I'm so sorry Vulcan Women#Sarek & Amanda: -seeing their son suffering- That's so fucking sad v_v ......... anyway -stares into each other's eyes some more-#<- and I genuinely do think they DID care and that's the worst part#that them genuinely loving and caring about Spock and KNOWING he was suffering acutely did NOT move either one of them to help him#bc it would cost their joint dream and he was created with a Purpose which would never be more important than Him#Spock: My childhood was torturous#Sarek & Amanda: Yes it was BUT SPOCK....all that suffering? It meant something.#Sarek and Amanda have 3 children which is wild bc they SHOULD have 0 children since they used two out of three as living experiments#and political propaganda#there's no one else for sarek but amanda and vice versa bc they are both insane#sybok is also a gigantic weirdo - being a member of Spock's family means you're a weirdo who clashes with your society

Can you imagine what MY FATHER would say...if I were to give up command of this vessel, jeopardize hundreds of lives, risk interplanetary war, all for the life of one person? ◭ My logic is uncertain where MY SON is concerned.

I know it’s because Vulcans have an extremely accurate sense of time, so when Kirk says “How long has it been?” to Spock it isn’t at all significant that he knows down to the last minute. However, as Kirk points out, Spock knows that was a rhetorical question and so I choose to believe that Spock missed him.
#previously established in yesterday’s son that when Spock doesn’t know how to connect with someone he gets More Vulcan about it#the spirk brainrot is so real#but also in a more literal sense- neither of these men are good at expressing deep feelings necessarily#and I do think this is Spock admitting that he missed Kirk without actually saying it#star trek tos#star trek novels#spock#jim kirk#time for yesterday#a.c crispin
