Dawnfell

The Sun Knights were cornered at the edge of the Forest of Night. The spirits of the forest refused them entry, all the while we were bearing down on them. We needed to kill them before Sunrise, when they would gain the benefits of their Solgem armor. Their head had them bracing, setting up on the very edge of the forest, always willing to fight to the last man. True warriors, all. Outnumbered 20 to 1 and still facing their end with bravery. It was a slaughter. Both sides took immense losses. At the end of it all, we had half the men they had when it all started, but the sacrifice was necessary. They fought like animals, killing a dozen with each stroke of their swords, and whenever they would take a wound they knew to be mortal, they would crush the gem hearts of their armors, releasing all of the remaining energy inside in a blast to take down as many of us as they possibly could. There were 5 that made it to the sunrise, 5 that fought and survived longer than any mortal should. You know their names, the Golden Dawn. The elite of the elite, the last survivors from the expeditions to end the Invasion. They were all run ragged, kept from sleep for days, having just fought from moonhigh to sunrise, but still, they stood and fought. We were so close, we outnumbered them 300 to one. You saw how many of us returned. Lucky shots, each one. Not a single one of us would have managed to score a hit in a straight fight. Our strategy saved us. They went down one after another, until the last one left, Drakn the Brave, broke through our line, stole a horse, and took off like a shot. I drew my bow and fired my last arrow after him. I could have sworn I had missed. But he fell off the horse. He was still alive when I reached him. His last request was to watch the sunrise one last time. I granted it. Propped him up against my shield, gave him some water to cool his throat, and sat with him to watch the sunrise. I didn’t realize he was dead until he fell over onto my shoulder an hour later. My troops were gathering up our dead for a funeral pyre. I gathered the enemy dead.
