Silence- word count: 1147 - Starchaser
Tumblr media
Regulus Black had always been silent, even before the trauma of his childhood had taken away his voice. But now, years of abuse and neglect had turned the silence into something more—a shield, a protective barrier that kept the world at arm's length. The Black family was known for their unyielding expectations, their coldness, their strict beliefs—and Regulus had borne it all in silence.
He’d never been one to speak up, even before his voice had disappeared entirely. But when it happened—when the arguments, the shouting, the contempt from his parents finally took their toll—it had left him speechless. Words failed him, the once familiar sounds that he had known all his life now foreign to him. He couldn’t bear to speak anymore, not with the weight of everything hanging over him.
At Hogwarts, it was easier. He could slip into the background, staying out of the way, keeping his distance. People didn’t expect him to speak; the Black name was enough. But it didn’t stop the loneliness from creeping in. It didn’t stop the feeling of being an outsider, even in a room full of people.
The one person who understood him in all of this was Sirius. His older brother had always known the truth about their home, about their parents. And when Regulus had stopped speaking altogether, Sirius had been the one to learn American Sign Language (ASL) just to communicate with him. Their bond, once strained and distant, had strengthened in that shared silence. Sirius never pressured Regulus to speak, and for that, Regulus was thankful. The two of them had their own language now—one that was silent, but spoke volumes.
But it wasn’t enough.
There were times when Regulus longed for something more. A connection that wasn’t limited to his brother. He had seen the way other people communicated—loud, boisterous, full of words and noise. He had seen how his housemates joked and laughed, how their friendships were formed through the clatter of their voices. And sometimes, Regulus wanted in. He didn’t want to be the shadow on the wall, the boy who stayed silent just to keep from being seen.
That’s when he started noticing James Potter.
It wasn’t intentional at first. Regulus had always thought James to be loud and obnoxious, the type who would never understand what it was like to live in silence. But over time, Regulus began to see him differently. It wasn’t just the way James interacted with the world, with his friends, with Lily, but the way he interacted with him, too.
James had never asked Regulus to speak. He had never made him feel like an outsider, even though there were so many things left unsaid between them. Regulus had caught glimpses of James watching him, his gaze lingering just a little too long, as if trying to figure out a puzzle, or maybe trying to understand him in a way that most people never bothered to.
It was after an encounter in the common room that everything changed.
Regulus had been sitting by the fire, reading in his usual spot, trying to escape the chatter of the room around him. He hated being there, hated the noise and the constant barrage of voices that he couldn’t join. It wasn’t that he wanted to, not really. He just didn’t want to feel left out, not anymore. He had spent so much of his life being quiet, but sometimes—sometimes he wanted more.
James had come in, as he often did, loud and exuberant. But today, his usual boisterous energy seemed tempered. He walked over to Regulus’s corner, hesitating before sitting down on the floor beside him. Regulus glanced up at him, confused. James had never sought him out like this before.
"Hey," James said quietly, his voice softer than usual, as though unsure of how to speak around the silence. He glanced at Regulus, his brow furrowing, and then he signed awkwardly, "How are you?"
Regulus blinked, his heart skipping a beat at the sight. James had learned ASL. It was clumsy, hesitant—his hands fumbling through the motions—but Regulus could understand it perfectly. How are you? The phrase was simple, but it felt like a thousand unspoken questions in those three words.
Regulus stared at James, his eyes wide, unable to speak, but feeling a warmth in his chest that he hadn't felt in a long time. No one had ever made the effort to reach him this way, not in the silence. It wasn’t just the words. It was the thought behind them, the willingness to try. To understand.
He took a deep breath and signed back, his fingers slow but sure: I’m fine.
James smiled, a bright, genuine smile that lit up his face. “I’m glad,” he signed back, then paused, as though searching for the right words, before he added, “I wanted to learn, for you. So... we can talk. Even if it’s just in silence.”
Regulus's heart swelled. He hadn't expected this, not from someone like James. James, who was loud and carefree, who was always surrounded by friends. James, who had never once made him feel inadequate for being quiet. It was more than kindness. It was a gift, a promise.
From that day on, James made it a point to learn more. He spent hours practicing in private, asking Sirius for help, studying books on ASL. He practiced in front of the mirror, determined to make his signs as fluid as possible. He would sit with Regulus after class, just to talk without words—signing questions, giving him space to answer in kind.
It wasn’t perfect. There were moments of awkwardness, moments when James stumbled over his signs or Regulus had to repeat himself. But it didn’t matter. What mattered was the connection they were building. It wasn’t forced or rushed—it was slow, thoughtful, patient. And for the first time, Regulus felt like he wasn’t alone in his silence.
One evening, after they had spent hours together in the library, James leaned back in his chair, exhausted but content. “You know,” he signed, his fingers moving with more confidence now, “I think I’m starting to understand you better than I ever have.”
Regulus smiled, the feeling a warmth that spread through his chest, filling the spaces that had once been so cold. He signed back, his hands steady: I don’t need you to understand me. I just need you to be here.
James’s eyes softened, and he nodded. “I’m always going to be here,” he signed, his hands firm, his gaze unwavering.
And in that moment, Regulus realized that silence didn’t mean isolation. It didn’t mean that he had to be invisible or unheard. Because there was someone who saw him. Someone who understood him—not through the words he could never say, but through the silence they shared.

#persona 3#persona 3 spoilers#minato arisato#makoto yuki#ryoji mochizuki#aigis#ryomina#lizzy does art#HELLO EVERYONE!!! march 5th is upon us again so i bring... my contribution for this year. my third year drawing for it!#i made the thumbnail for this a few weeks after last year's graduation day#i thought it would be fun to lean into the ryominaigis angle of graduation day (you could read this as minato/aigis if you like-#but i feel like most people would read it as ryoji/minato)#IN ANY CASE working on this made me very emotional over this game :') (specifically minato)#i really enjoy how p3 ends it's such a nice way of wrapping up the narrative's messages and themes#working on this. minato's kindness was at the forefront of my mind throughout the piece#and i really wanted to capture how. ultimately it was his decision to sacrifice himself- to do the great seal#while to an outsider's perspective it is. sad that minato passes. i think becoming the seal is something that minato-#actively welcomes. in the same way that death (ryoji) is a comfort to him because death was housed in him for Ten YearsTM#AND I ALSO GOT REALLY SAD OVER AIGIS TOO. i still get fucked up over how in fes's animated cutscene for 3/5 they portray-#her as human and not drawing the robot parts so i wanted to do something smilar here...#but also i am very sad on aigis's behalf because she discovers her humanity through minato and realizes what she-#wants to do and then. well. minato is like. he's ready to pass on (even if he's scared) and im like. OH MY GOD THIS TRIO GETS ME MESSED UP#this was more coherent in my head LOL BUT ough i like drawing p3 and working through my feelings about it...#anyway! happy (in quotations) march 5th. i love this game to bits. it's so fun to draw for this day every year and see how i've improved#if you've read all this thank you :) lizzy appreciates you all very much. mwah! <3

shassie as a dynamic works so well imo because shawn is dialectically a genius and an idiot while lassie is dialectically badass and pathetic. thus, in the most ideal scenario, they're a scarily effective power duo of whip-smart deduction and ruthless tactical intimidation, but when you flip them to the other sides of their spectrums they become Two Losers Making Asses Of Themselves, both of whom constantly try to hoist themselves back to the other end by using the other as a counterweight.

I'm sorry but the irony of Nico calling Max unprofessional is sending me so bad like sir there's an entire garage full of people, who were literally in the trenches trying to survive the Brocedes fallout while just doing their jobs, who might have a few things to say about your (& Lewis') level of professionalism at that time 😭✋️
#f1#formula 1#formula one#max verstappen#nico rosberg#lewis hamilton#brocedes#like niki lauda had to try multiple times to literally parent trap them to try and get them on speaking terms it never worked#because one would arrive they'd see the other and the other would leave#& if i remember correctly the garage crew would swap around from race to race as a like see we aren't favouring anybody gesture 😭#and thats no shade to nico because it was both of them contributing to that environment#his comment re max is just making me laugh#like if i was a part of the pr/media team - which is a part of the degree I'm working on irl - at merc that year i would've lost the plot#like its insane reflecting on it nearly a decade later but the poor souls just trying to do their job in the eye of that storm#truly gods strongest soldiers#ngl the professional comment irks me a bit because its not like max is engaging in inappropriate work place behaviour#he's engaging in another aspect of racing that his involvement raises awareness of & that makes racing more accessible#& we all know how inaccessible not only getting into racing is but also to continue to pursue the further along you go#theres so many stories of 1 sibling giving up racing so the other can keep going because the family can't afford for them both to race#its a huge financial strain & we only see a handful of drivers talk about that & try to do something to change it#and nicos fellow sky sports commentators are routinely unprofessional on so many levels#additionally max had a lot of valid reasons to be annoyed at his team today#but alas he's not english so he's ungrateful#i hate that drivers can't criticise their teams or car without immediately being branded as bratty & ungrateful#ESPECIALLY WHEN THEIR JOB IS TO GIVE FEEDBACK#you can see the double standards from sky when say Lando or George have complaints with their team/car v the likes of Max and Yuki#especially Yuki my god the things i would do to get the British media to leave him alone#this was a jokey post at one point and then became a rant whoops lmao#I'll leave it that before i write an actual essay here 😭✋️
