It's not a nightmare really. Sure, it wakes her up every few hours, sweaty and unrested, and when she closes her eyes again, it drops her right back where she left off, but it's not scary. She's not being hunted or chased. She's not standing at the front of class with no clothes on. Nobody's dying.
Shepard's driving a road car on suburban streets - shifting, nebulous streets; faintly European but also faintly not - and somewhere in the distance, there's a fire.
There's a fire and she has to reach it.
She can see a column of black smoke in the distance, catch the odd lick of orange between buildings, but every turn she takes feels wrong and by the time she doubles back, the smoke isn't where she thought it was. It's in her rearview mirror, or out to her left when it was on her right. Sometimes a fire engine blasts past her in the opposite direction, the wailing siren fading before she can follow.

There’s a ripple of laughter. Emily is checking her watch and people are starting to shuffle their belongings around.
“Are you going to answer the question?” Conrad calls, but by then there’s enough ambient noise for everyone to plausibly ignore him.

yuri on ice fantasy au, where a dragon moves into the hotsprings for mysterious reasons
Yuuri has such an incredible problem. He has every problem under the sun, really, but the current problem is extremely naked, extremely large, and extremely in the middle of the deepest hot spring, which is blasting every other problem out of Yuuri's head. He knows it's not true but right now he's convinced that if he can get the stupid fucking dragon to move out of his family's source of income it will solve every problem in his life, ever.
"Yuuuuu~riiii!"
Mari tosses another bag of squid at him, careless of the way that he's wallowing into his tray. It drapes over his head like an icepack. His senses are momentarily overwhelmed by plastic and brine and just a little bit of fish and also the squashy cold texture of many small squid bodies. She got over her frank admiration for the admittedly impressive male figure lounging in plain sight of every window in the inn after the first day. After a week, she's even lost interest in teasing Yuuri for the inexplicable infatuation their guest has for Yuuri in favor of increased smoke breaks. The extend of her familial support lies in keeping him supplied with snacks.
"How does he eat so much?" Yuuri mourns into the table, muffled by squid.
"At least he's paying for it," Mari says, and leaves him to his fate.
She's right. Yuuri sighs and emerges from his squid shelter to start plating it up. His fingers are going to start smelling permanently like seafood and cooking oil if this keeps up another week. Their guest payed generously in the beginning, treating himself to half the menu and every little gimmick Yuuri's parents have added to "the hotspring experience" over the years on the first night and getting somehow more extravagant with every passing day. Mari declared a ridiculous bulk order fee over their parents' protests when they started having to order groceries from other towns and he didn't even blink.
Squid goes directly on the tray, because they don't have plates big enough, with a half-assed garnish and accompaniments. Yuri is starting to dream of plating supersized "YU-TOPIA SEAFOOD DELUXE!!!" platters in his sleep. Whole shrimp, pink in their shells, mussel in the shell, and seaweed salad fence the squid in, and an ominous level of splashing from outside puts a spring in Yuri's step to take the overladen tray out to the springs.
There's a pearl the size of Yuuri's fist waiting in the walkway. "So much simpler than exchanging currency!" their guest had declared. It is, unfortunately, especially once Mari got the first one appraised and they've suddenly been inundated by collectors. Before this the only dragon pearl Yuuri had seen was in a museum as part of an emperor's treasure. They may be flooding the market. He gently rolls it into a patch of moss with his foot so he can add it to the basket under the counter when he comes back.
"Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu~riiiiiiiiii," croons a voice that tickles the soles of Yuri's feet and sets the water in the ponds dancing. He's not yelling, but the effect of a large man's voice multiplied by ten is proportionately multiplied.
"Yes, yes," Yuuri says.
One of Victor's heads is lying directly in the path around the corner, close enough Yuuri almost steps on him.

Day 22
uuuuuh i think y’all sent me four hours away to a mission trip to pick up cigarette butts at a zoo. also i’m sharing a twin sized bed with one pillow and one blanket with a stranger. and it’s the hardest bed i’ve ever felt, like i’m scared to sleep on this slab.
so i had to meet everyone at the link cafe, the cafe is run by 3 german people and one vietnamese person. they crowdfund these service trips, often proposed by folks within the link community, by way of people paying extra for beverages and choosing which project they donate the extra money to.
i’m at a loss with this one rly. i’ve learned a lot about the diversity of religion present here in vietnam, but this crowd funded trash and travel trip has ~everyone~ praying over the food and saying amen. also most people are 21 and under from what i gather, so they’re all calling me auntie.
i was smoking the last of my 5gs of weed that lasted me 12 days (!!) talking to one of the cofounders of the cafe and he was telling me how god (christian god) speaks to him, etc. talking about what the community at the link has done for people, how he prayed for four hours and this dude that hadn’t spoken in 12 years started speaking. he’s from germany and has been here for 12 years, with the link community being permanently housed at the link cafe for five years. it’s a coffee shop downstairs and has a couple apartments upstairs. anyway, i was smiling thru it as hard as i could, and then some folks from the trip came by saying they were gonna go look for crabs in the river, sooo i went to look for crabs in the river. yoooo some of these people were good af at catching fish and crabs with their hands in the dark.
