Trump Weird News - Trump Bites The Apple
Grandfather, Frederick Trump (born Frederich Trump), owned "the Dairy Restaurant [which] was in the middle of Seattle's Pioneer Square… Biographer Gwenda Blair called it 'a hotbed of sex, booze, and money, [it] was the indisputable center of the action in Seattle.' The restaurant served food and liquor and was advertised to include 'Rooms for Ladies', a common euphemism for prostitution." He had immigrated to the U.S. to escape mandatory conscription in the Prussian Army and was banished from Prussia for so doing.

(via Parkdale Organize): "Our neighbours at 77 Spencer continue to demand that Akelius Canada withdraw the above guideline rent increase at their building. Today fellow Akelius tenants at 109 Indian Road, who also face an AGI at their building, joined them for a loud and disruptive protest at the Akelius head office. Rather than meet tenants' demands, Akelius had Toronto Police remove them from their office."

5-19 West 29th Street, 2022.
I photographed this row about a year ago and it was demolished shortly after this. It’s now a vacant lot or “green space” as described by the owners, Johns Hopkins University. This is a classic case of demolition by neglect. JHU sat on these for over a decade and let them fall apart. Their reason for demolition was that they could not be repaired, which is nonsense. They are currently building at least three new buildings a few blocks away, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to fix up these historic rowhouses on their campus that could’ve been used for housing or offices. Such a waste, but typical of big institutions that own property all over the city and state. Shame on you, JHU!
On a personal note, my great-grand uncle bought and lived in #17 back in 1912. Glad I was at least able to document another piece of my family history in Baltimore.

"Contractor said he warned of Davenport building collapse, told workers 'Get away. You’re going to die'
That was the headline in yesterday's front page of my local paper the Quad City Times. It stuck with me since the minute I read it and as I read the article it revealed more of the true nature of the City of Davenport and the demon slumlord Andrew Wold. And this stuck out to me
Ryan Shaffer, co-owner of R. A. Masonry, was working nearby at 112 W. 3rd St., the former Antonella’s Pizza, in February. While on the job, he said, he was approached by Andrew Wold, the owner of the building where the collapse occurred. Shaffer said Wold asked him to supply a quote for work on the nearby apartment building. When he did, he said, the bid was rejected because it was too high. “He wanted to cut the cost by cutting out the shoring and supporting of the building," Shaffer said. Shoring is done to prop up a building when the structure is deemed unsafe, Shaffer explained. The bid for that work alone came in at about $50,000. “I said, ‘If we don’t do it this way exactly, I’m not putting my guys in there. Somebody is going to die,’ ” he said.
The Slumlord knew, the property manager knew and yet they refused to do anything about it. But it only gets worse.
Wold would then shop someone who would do the work for an acceptable price. City records reflect this. On Feb. 22, the city of Davenport issued a permit for, “structural masonry repairs to west elevation as specified in engineer's report.
According to the permit, the job came at a cost of nearly $40,000. The contractor listed is Bi-State Masonry.
City inspection records show a final inspection was done on March 1 by Trishna Pradhan, the chief building official for Davenport. The building passed inspection, and the work was being completed in line with the structural engineer's report.
The exterior finish of the building needed to match the historic fabric of the rest of the building. Pradhan wrote that the contractor was aware and the owner was being informed.
In the next sentence, it was noted Bi-State was off the job as of March 1 because the “owner did not agree to their change order for installing brick outside.”
Pradhan continued, saying repair work was on hold but shoring was in place and, “site is secure. Owner has not submitted new timeline for work to commence.”
Work then appears to have resumed, and it passed three more city inspections on April 12, April 21, and May 1. In the last one, the inspector noted “repair work has been completed per Engineer’s Report.”
Brickwork done in the days before collapse
A separate permit for brickwork was filed on Wednesday, May 24. City records indicate the job consisted of replacing 100 feet of brick on the exterior of the building, per city code.
The permit says the work came at a cost of $3,000. The contractor on the job is listed as “owner.”
Yes, you read that right the company the Slumlord hired to do the repairs was a company he owned so he can cut his own costs. Note-- this man lives in a 2.6 million dollar house in Bettendorf, Iowa and his lawyer happen to be the Mayor of said city (a father-son company).
Shaffer said, in his opinion, the work described would account for only one-third of what needed to be done. Saturday, one day before the collapse, he drove by and saw a pile of bricks on the ground.
“(Wold) was calling us and asking for I-beams and stuff to support it. I looked at it and was like, ‘There’s no saving it at this point,’” he said.
Friday, two days before the building collapsed, Shaffer said he went to the apartment building and told workers, “Get away. You’re going to die.”
Sunday, at 3:30 p.m., less than two hours before it collapsed, he warned workers at the site of 324 Main St. that they needed to leave.
“We were here working all day," he said, referring to his work at the former Antonella's location. "Literally, we were just waiting for the building to drop.
And then an hour later, it did. He tried to warn people but no one listened. No one seemed to care.
I'm sorry City Officals, the Slumlord and the Property Managers need to be charges with Murder if they do discover that the three men have passed cause it took them FOUR days to support the building. FUCKING FOUR DAYS.

you know what's awesome? when you come home for a joyless job and enter your overpriced apartment that has way too many things wrong with it to pay as much as you but you still pay because you have no other choice and it's full of chemical smells, making your throat and eyes burn. also, your neighbor has the same thick smell but no notice was given about spraying for bugs but it 1000% smells like 2 cans of Raid were released in your apartment. i fucking hate slumlords.

Quote
Were a king to enter a city he would expect and receive honor and applause. But the world would be astonished if instead of asking to be shown the principal buildings of the city, the king were to say to the mayor, “Now let me go to your poor men and women who need my kingly help and sympathy: it gives me no pleasure to look on your splendour while I know your back slums are crowded with the miserable and degraded.” Ah, no king ever did this except the One who was crowned with thorns, and whose throne was a cross.

I turn 36 on Thursday, and I've never had a single broken bone in my body until Saturday.
I work as a rural transit driver. It's a form of paratransit; we pick people up and take them to where they need to go.
Recently, it's been unseasonably warm and rainy for December, leading to extremely icy conditions on the side roads.
That was also the condition of the roads on Saturday morning when I arrived at an apartment building to pick up a passenger. The parking lot of this apartment building sloped down toward the street. The building owner/manager apparently hadn't seemed to bother with any kind of winter maintenance. Their negligence and the unseasonably rainly winter conditions created a sheer icy downward slope for their parking lot.
In my attempt to provide excellent customer service, I always back the van up as close to the door as I safely can. That morning, my passenger told me they couldn't get the van door open as they were afraid they might fall cause it was icy over there. I told them to wait and I would help them. However, as soon as I stepped out of the van, I slipped and fell. I hadn't seen the patch of ice below my driver door. But that's OK, cause we keep traction sand in the vans. I could just throw some down, and we could be on our way. But after I got to my feet and looked around a little more at the very dimly lit parking lot, I saw the extent of the building owner's negligence. I was parked in the middle of what amounted to half a parking lot of sheer ice. I couldn't get around to the other side of my van cause that would mean trying to walk up the icy slope. So, I had to get back in my van and try getting to our emergency supplies through the back. But as soon as I tried getting back into the van, I fell on the ice again, and I heard my ribs CRACK. For what felt like a good minute, all I could do was lay there on the ice in blinding pain.
My passenger was offering to call somebody but I told her to stay back. The last thing we needed was for her to fall, too. All I needed was to pull myself up into the driver seat and I could reach my walkie. That's what I did, too. After I willed myself to move through the pain, I pulled myself up into my driver seat. Forget the traction sand. I backed the van up onto the landlord's grass so my passenger could safely board from there, and we could be on our way.
If the landlord is too cheap for basic winter maintenance of his properties, he can deal with having tire tracks in his grass.
That folks is how, after 35 years of living with zero broken bones, I acquired three all at once. Just in time for my 36th birthday.

Blasted by Beryl in Texas
After 3 months away from home sailing across the Pacific Ocean on the Point Nemo, I came back to find class 1 “minimal” hurricane Beryl had done more damage to my property than all the other storms (Alicia, Harvey, etc) combined for the last 30 years. Onboard the ship, I could only see news reports of Houston/Galveston and Surfside Beach. The photos and videos looked bad. Big trees downed and…

I wish there was more unity in the world....
we could really do some good work if everyone came together more
like I, people talk about problems but fail to support eachother on ANY of them.
like in apartments.....we all know about slumlords and the "landlord specials" we forced to deal with , but why not ban together to support eachother in getting justice for ourselves.
Ban together with the whole building and sue the owner for failing to have the building up to code and other issues!
get to know everyone in the portent, set up a group chat and meet once a week and make sure to document ll your complaints and grieves with your apartment, and all the ignore and negated requests and hire a lawyer to repent your nd SUE them!
its literally genius. your all suffering and we all need support. I know in low income apartments , don't have the luxury of a layer but if you all document your things, and chip in 100 dollars per person and then make use of that time with that lawyer.
whatever petty doffeneces can wait until after, we have bigger issues like very quality if our lies to worry about.
ive seen it done with HOAS and all they did was get a signature to dian the HOA.

If there's one thing I commend my last landlord for not doing (and there were a lot of things she didn't do or attempted to do herself and failed), it's not raising our rent in the 3 years we lived there.
you sit there and think “$1500 for a one bedroom is crazy” and then it dawns on you that there are studios going for $3000. or more. a month. regardless of location. large and small cities alike. And then your brain starts leaking out of your ears
