SloMo WriNo: Outlining and Tracking

it's November Ist! The big day is here!

Hopefully you have your minimum and maximum word count goals set, and have found a good time to fit in your writing. Now it's time to start writing.

I have a few final (well not final, I’ll be making a lot more posts!) suggestions to help you stay on track.

Firstly, regarding outlines. Now you may have noticed that I haven’t really talked about outlines before now. That’s because I am a pure discovery writer, or pantser. That is, I don’t even think about outlining before I start writing. If you are someone who likes having one made in advance, I assume that you have found and used one of the excellent methods that others have created.

That is not what I’m talking about here.

I’m talking about what you do while writing. I believe that building an outline as you write is an absolutely essential part of the process of writing a novel, even if you, like me, never ever prepare one in advance.

What I want you to do is this. Each day after you have written, write a few sentence description of what you’ve written. Do this even if you have an outline already, do this especially if what you’ve written diverges from your previously prepared outline. The goal is to create an outline of what you’ve actually written.

I like to use the index card function on Scrivener for this, because it becomes the chapter and scene titles so my outline in progress is right there in the sidebar of my document and easy to refer to. (Yet another reason I highly recommend Scrivener) But you can do it in whatever function your program has, a separate google doc, or even on physical paper.

I’ve found nothing keeps a novel on track like an ongoing outline. So please give it a go!

Secondly, there's the matter of tracking your word count. Of course all programs will give you an ongoing total word count. Some will also track your daily word counts for you.

Still, I find it helpful to track my daily word count separately. It keeps me honest, and something about the process of manually updating a tracker makes it all feel official. There’s a few ways to do this.

A spreadsheet. (feel free to make a copy of this one to use)

Track yourself in an app (I've been liking this one)

Join the WIP discord and report your word count in the check-in channel.

No matter what method you choose, keeping an eye on your daily progress will help you tweak your schedule to continue making writing most days a priority.

Video: The video mode helps you record a film or shoot any moment you want to make a memory. You can also edit the videos from the ‘Edit’ section in the gallery.

Slo-mo: These are the slow-motion videos that are recorded just like normal videos, but appear as a slo-mo when played from the gallery.

Time Lapse: This mode helps you take an observation of a slow process. For example- you may capture the Sunrise or Sunset by fitting your camera at an accurate place. Once done, you can view the hours of the process in a speedy way.

The steps to set the default camera mode on an iOS device are:

Go to the ‘Settings’ app from the home screen on the iPhone and iPad.

Click on the ‘Camera’ tab.

Turn the slider on for the ‘Camera Mode’ option.

Next, open the camera app on your device and select a mode you want to use by default.

The recent camera mode will become the default mode on your iPhone and iPad. This also works with video and camera switches. For example- If the video mode was the recently used mode, it’ll be set as default.

Using camera shortcuts from Control Center

Camera shortcuts are pretty easy to use and access via Control Center. This enables you to jump directly to the camera or video mode before you launch the application. Make sure to add the camera icon on the Control Center from the Settings app, if you don’t have it already.

The steps to use camera shortcuts from the Control Center are:

For the new iOS devices such as iPhone X or later, swipe down from top to bottom of the screen to open the Control Center. For the old iPhone models, swipe from bottom to up to open the Control Center window.

Press and hold on the camera icon for iOS 13 or later, and the additional options will appear. For iOS 12 and before, use the 3D Touch Gesture for the additional options.

The pop-up menu with additional options will appear. Tap and select any mode to open the camera app straightaway in that mode.

Following the steps above will directly take you to your desired mode to take a picture or shoot a video.

Note: There are limited additional features present with the shortcut method, such as Time-lapse and Slomo are absent.

Instagram Gets New SloMo, Echo, and Duo Filters for Boomerang

Facebook-owned Instagram on Saturday introduced three new options to share Boomerang Stories: SlowMo, Echo, and Duo, along with a new few feature to trim their length.

“Your Instagram camera gives you ways to express yourself and easily share what you’re doing, thinking or feeling with your friends. Boomerang is an iconic part of that, and one of the most beloved camera formats. Instagram is excited to expand on the creativity and give you new ways to use Boomerang to turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected,” the company said in a statement.

The new filters are available in the Boomerang composer located in the Instagram Stories camera.

With SlowMo, as the name suggests, Boomerang videos are slowed to half their original speed. Echo creates a double vision effect, enhancing Boomerang and Duo, both speeds up and slows down Boomerang, adding a texturized effect.

It’s also possible to trim and adjust the length of recorded Boomerangs with the update.

The new effects come as an over-the-air (OTA) update.

To access these new effects, take a Boomerang as usual, open the Story camera, swipe over to “Boomerang” on the carousel, then tap the shutter button or hold it down and let go. Next, tap the infinity symbol along the top of the display to access the new effects.

Instagram recently launched new “Layout” feature that will allow users to include multiple photos in a single story.

With this, users now create their Stories with up to six different photos, although this new feature was already on third-party apps to create similar images.

A user just need to do is open the Stories camera inside Instagram and look for “Layout” to start combining the photos. Once finished, just publish the Story just like any other.
