House Harkonnen reporting in! 💰 https://keyrelic.etsy.com
Solid Bronze Harkonnen Ram Artisan Keycap with RGB shine through eyes.
A homage to Dune II and Dune 2000 games from legendary Westwood studio. Dune II was a precursor for Real-Time Strategy games. For many, those games were the first contact with the Dune Universe and they still have a special place in our hearts.
House Harkonnen, also known as the Family Harkonnen, was a Great House of the Landsraad, with their capital on the heavily industrialized Giedi Prime. The Harkonnens were the historical enemies of House Atreides of Caladan, with whom they maintained an ancient feud since the Battle of Corrin. They also came to be recognized for their underhanded and sinister political tactics, fueled by ambition, malevolence, hatred, and brutality. ⚜️Great for collectors: can be passed down from generation to generation.

Googootrops
This article is part of our Japanese Obscurities feature. We put out a whole book about them, which is available as both a full color hardcover and a Kindle ebook from Amazon! If you’d like to see more of these features, please check out the book and if you enjoyed it, leave a five star review so we can do a follow up with even more interesting, offbeat, or historically important Japanese games!
Googootrops, a possible play on the Paranthropus genus, is conceptually similar to Artdink’s Tail of the Sun. Like that game, Googootrops has you hunting mammoths, but in this case, you’re looking for a particularly special one called the “Boss Boss Mammoth”, which has the best tasting meat in the world. Instead of toughing it out on your own, you get to build a team of up to six cavepeople and micromanage them to success. It’s an ambitious, truly unusual game, but it requires extreme patience to deal with its many quirks.

Something that bugs me about real time strategy games.
I've been playing Homeworld Deserts of Kharak again. This is a beautiful game...when viewed from a camera angle that nobody is ever gonna use.

But when you're actually trying to play the thing it looks like this:

This isn't unique to Deserts of Kharak. I think a lot of RTS games with 3D graphics have this problem.
I think the 2D stuff looks better from the perspective where you're actually meant to play them from:

I'll even go as far to say that I think RTS was hurt by the switch from 2D to 3D more than any other genre. More than platformers or even fighting games. RTS ended up being a genre with graphics that are hard to run, harder to read, and even harder to make distinctive.

C & C: Red Alert Played With a Stylus
Tumblr media
Combined Arms - a mod of the open source version of C & C: Red Alert, Open RA. Which adds units from most Command and Conquer games, running on my Surface Pro X.
Playing an RTS with a stylus is interesting. Selecting units and building stuff works fine. Navigating the map is a bit of a pain in the ass until you get radar and can jump around the map.
The only big issue is you have no left click so you can’t cancel anything you’ve qued up to build.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun is an autistic fixation of mine. I don't play it often and I'm not very good at it, and it's not a very balanced game that, as I understand, was rushed to shit.
But two things:
GOD this game's aesthetic is fucking immaculate. there's something i seriously fell in love with about how this game sells the desolate, alien world that Earth has become in the story in its spritework, lighting and music. the look imho still holds up amazingly today even though it has goofy FMV, and i enjoy the FMV in its own right because of how unapologetically hammy it feels. it's something i think everyone should enjoy at least once. which leads perfectly into...
It's free. https://cnc-comm.com/tiberian-sun/downloads/the-game/installer
Tiberian Sun and its Firestorm expansion have been freeware since 2010 and is updated to be playable comfortably on modern PC firmware, including multiple different choices of renderer in case one doesn't work for you. it'll likely take a bit of finegling to get it to run well and not glitch out (for example, my pause menu likes to disappear when alt-tabbing, if i'm running DDrawCompat in windowed mode), but i think that it's worth it if you enjoy any kind of RTS.
this is by no means a perfect game, but i want to see people enjoy the game whose Vibes remain stuck in my brain like a foot-long rail spike.

I started a october challenge for myself, and since I am playing too much rts comp stomp these days, each day I will draw an rts pixel fan art each day. Day 1 was StarCraft and day 2 is Age of Empires. Tomorrow is going to be Red Alert 2. =)
