Charles Erskine Scott Wood, Untitled (On the Snake River), 1906, oil on canvas, 25"x30"
C.E.S. Wood may have been the most influential cultural figure in Portland in the forty years surrounding the turn of the twentieth century. He helped found the Portland Art Museum and was instrumental in making the Multnomah County Library a free and public institution. He secured the services of his friend Olin Warner, a nationally known sculptor, to design the Skidmore Fountain, and his words "Good citizens are the riches of a city" are inscribed at its base. The Portland Rose Festival was his idea. He numbered among his friends Mark Twain, Emma Goldman, John Reed, Clarence Darrow, Lincoln Steffens, Ansel Adams, John Steinbeck, Charlie Chaplin, James J. Hill, and Langston Hughes. Soldier, lawyer, poet, painter, raconteur, bon vivant, politician, free spirit, and Renaissance man, Wood might also be the most interesting man in Oregon history.

Pug has played by the Skidmore Fountain at Saturday Market for 30 years. He’s also a surfer and knows all the best spots along Sunset Cliffs, where I grew up. I generally surfed OB South by the pier, but he doesn’t hold that against me. As I walked up on this day he called out “Jim! Get a picture of me with my friend Don!” …and then the Santa on the one wheel juggling bowling pins showed up. Photogeekery info: I was using my 1953 Speed 4x5 with a 90mm lens, and wanted to get the image with the little boy and Pug and Don, then the juggling Santa arrived, so I took one horizontal frame and spliced it with a vertical frame so I had one image with all the characters. Visiting Burj Khalifa for the first time? Here’s what and how to do it?
Tumblr media
The Burj Khalifa, which was completed in 2010, is the world's largest structure and building. The overall height is 829.8 metres, with a roof height of 828 metres.
The Burj Khalifa's construction began in 2004 and was finished five years later in 2009. The structure was completed in 2010 as part of a new concept known as downtown Dubai. It will serve as the centrepiece of a vast, mixed-use complex. The edifice set multiple height records, including being named the world's tallest structure. Owings & Merrill, and Adrian Smith of Skidmore, who also designed the Willis Tower and One World Trade Center, designed the Burj Khalifa.
Here are some of the salient features of the world’s tallest building that you shouldn't miss on your Burj Khalifa tour.
The Dubai Fountain:
The Dubai Fountain is a magnificent work of art located directly in front of the Burj Khalifa. It has 6,600 lights and 50 coloured projectors to illuminate it. The area is continually filled with music ranging from classical to modern Arabic and other genres. It is capable of shooting water 150 metres into the air.
Observation deck:
At the time of its opening, the Observation Deck in Burj Khalifa was the world's highest outdoor observation deck. Cloud Top 488 atop the Canton Tower currently holds the record. The electronic telescope, a virtual reality system designed by Montréal's Gsmprjct % that allows travellers to enjoy natural landscapes in real-time, is also located on the observation deck. People can see Iran's coastlines from the top of the skylights when the tide is low and vision is good.
Burj Khalifa Park:
A 27-acre park developed by SWA Group landscape architects surrounds the Burj Khalifa. The park's design was inspired by the Hymenocallis flower, a desert plant, just like the tower. The water field, which includes a series of ponds and water jet fountains, is located in the centre of the property.

Burj Khalifa - Famous Tourist Places in Dubai.
Rising 828m into the sky, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building globally and one of the best engineering accomplishments ever. Get completed in 2010; the strong pinnacle represents the beating heart of Dubai and its courageous desire. It is one of the famous tourist places in Dubai.
Tumblr media
Burj Khalifa's glass-framed frame penetrates the sky like a rocket. However, the view from above uncovers its actual motivation: the Hymenocallis, or spider lily, a white blossom found in the desert. It was planned by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, the team behind worldwide architectural landmarks, for example, One World Trade Center and the Willis Tower.
The magnificent building is situated close to The Dubai Mall. It draws visitors from everywhere the world to get the unrivalled perspectives from different perception decks or turn upward in wonder. For an unrivalled experience, head up to the suitably named At the Top and At the Top Sky on floors one hundred twenty-four and one hundred twenty-five and enjoy exceptional 360-degree vistas. You can buy tickets to both observation decks online as well as on-site to visit this best spots in Dubai.
For some sky-high dining, book a dusk supper at Atmosphere restaurant and lounge on the 122nd floor. Or try something lighter like breakfast or high tea among the mists at The Lounge, spread across floors 152, 153, and 154 (585m high).
In any case, that is not all. You can find a combination of attractions and conveniences across each of the 160 stories, including a five-star inn planned by Giorgio Armani, an extravagance spa and wellness club, and the world's tallest art gallery highlighting more than 85 acclaimed specialists. Back at ground level is a dynamic center point of dining and entertainment at The Dubai Mall, Burj Plaza, and Souk Al Bahar. The hypnotizing dancing waters of The Dubai Fountain.
Other than the world's tallest detached design, the Burj Khalifa also has the world record for longest lift travel distance and most noteworthy café on the planet. The building was formerly named Burj Dubai but was renamed in recognition of Abu Dhabi and Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan President of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, and the UAE government lent Dubai money to pay its obligations. The building has numerous height records, including its name as the tallest building globally and well-known as one famous tourist places in Dubai.

The Industrial Arts of the Nineteenth Century, Items from the Great Exhibition of 1851
Today we present decorative plates from The Industrial Arts of the Nineteenth Century, a series of illustrations of works produced by many nations for the first world trade fair, The Great Exhibition took place in Hyde Park, London in 1851. The book was produced by the architect and art historian, Matthew Digby Wyatt, and published by Day and Son, Lithographers to the Queen from 1851-1853. The two large volumes feature 160 chromolithographed plates produced by a team of artists and lithographers, many by Francis Bedford.
In the introduction, Matthew Digby Wyatt explains the importance of creating such a work that will communicate with future generations the “triumphs of industry” by illustrating the the “choicest specimens” of the Great Exhibition. He compares such an endeavor to the way that art and architecture acts as a representative for its time in history.
List of plates in order:
1. Book Cover by French of Bolton-le Moors, Lancashire.
2. A Group of Church Plate by Skidmore of Coventry.
3. Indian Elephant Trapping.
4. Specimens of Russian Embroidery.
5. Fountain and Ornamental Gates (in cast iron) by the CoalBrookDale Company.
6. Window Ornament from Tunis.
7. White Wood Cabinet by Michel L. Wettli of Berne.
8. Pianofortes by Collard & Collard of London.
9. Ornamental Gun Stand from Tunis.
10. Decoration of an Apartment by Thomas of London.

John Hancock Building, New Orleans, LA. K&B Plaza (on the National Register of Historic Places as the John Hancock Building), was designed in 1962 by the nationally renowned architecture firm Skidmore Owings & Merril. The building was designed in the Modern style prevalent to the period, but the architects did something interesting to adapt the building to the local New Orleans climate. Over the exterior glass curtain walls, they wrapped the sides of the building with a concrete grid acting as a brise-soleil. A brise-soleil is an architectural feature that reduces heat gain inside a building by deflecting sunlight before it reaches the glass on the windows.  This allowed the building to have large floor-to-ceiling windows while also reducing the amount of energy required to keep it cool.K&B Plaza is still in use as an office building. The lobby and office corridors, which are free and open to the public, serve as an art gallery lined with amazing original pieces from Sydney Besthoff's collection.  The contemporary art collection is one of the best in the city and includes a sculptural fountain by Isamu Noguchi on the plaza outside.

About the artists: Sidney Simon was an American painter, sculptor, muralist, art school cofounder (Skowhegan), and American Official War Artist. One of his sculptures, the Four Seasons Fountain Sculpture, is located at One Worldwide Plaza in New York City. Jinwan Shopping Mall, Zhuhai Building

Jinwan Shopping Mall in Zhuhai
24 Nov 2021
Architects: 10 Design
Location: Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China
Jinwan Shopping Mall, Zhuhai
10 Design Completes Lakefront Shopping Mall in Zhuhai 10 Design (part of Egis group) welcomes shoppers to the 117,000sqm designed mall that sits on the edge of Jinsha Lake in Zhuhai, China. Jinwan Mall is 10 Design’s second project to complete on Huafa’s Jinwan Aviation City, along with the recently built Industrial Service Centre and soon to be completed International Business Centre.
Jointly led by Design Partners Ted Givens and Scott Findley together with Project Partner Miriam Auyeung (COO), the retail scheme envisions the integration of a traditional courtyard garden with hypermodern space. The development weaves together the main mall, retail street and the waterside pavilions consisting of F&B and retail spaces, with ample outdoor spaces opening onto the lake. The retail street and the mall are tied together with the glass canopy spine that allows for weather-proof connectivity and use of the amenities.
The façade which takes the form of Chinese stacked stone walls wraps around the scheme, coming alive with its rhombi shapes inspired by the 4th-dimensional hypercube. It plays with the gradient by a mixture of dark and light panels to break up the massing, as well as the lighting features acting upon perforated panels at night.
Design Partner Ted Givens commented: “Our design for Jinwan Mall transforms the regular shopping mall into an outdoor retail experience closely linked to nature, creating a new paradigm of how people experience retail spaces and bringing a new destination to Zhuhai’s Jinwan District”.
The urban frontage of the development along the roads creates an insulated appearance in contrast to the open, pedestrianised lakefront side of the mall. The perimetral wall facing the main streets is solid to prevent noise, except for two subtle openings acting as main entrances and glass fissures that allow dramatic views into the mall.
The inner wall opens toward the lake and waterfront gardens via glass façades along with cascading down staircases and green terraces, blurring the line between the retail space and nature.
The circulation is made effortless like a meandering stroll through the garden, starting from the entrances to the mall’s atrium, retail street and opening up to the garden and lake, by multiple pathways and interwoven spaces. The development’s unique retail planning involving features such as the courtyard fountain and flexible waterfront space for pop-up shops and performance stages encourages gathering and lingering by visitors to the area.
Project Partner Miriam Auyeung (COO) commented: “The Jinwan Mall development has been designed to maximise the nature and outdoor lifestyle of Zhuhai whilst tying it to the hypermodern concepts of discovery and exploration. This new retail destination will provide the city with a public landmark that is inviting and accessible for all.”
