157: Dal’Rok Has Left the Building
“The Storyteller” 30th-anniversary reflections
An uninvited guest menaces a Bajoran village and only one man can save the day: Miles O’Brien. At least that’s what he has been told. There’s just one problem, the solution relies on his storytelling skills, and he’s nowhere near as talkative as his new buddy, Julian Bashir. Can he engineer a yarn to chase away the cloud creature? Meanwhile, Sisko mediates a territorial dispute between two Bajoran villages and Nog flirts with one of the leaders. But the real action is down on the planet. The Sirah has left the building, the Dal’Rok has arrived, and a bucket of oatmeal ain’t gonna chase it away.
In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “The Storyteller,” how a long-dismissed idea finally found a home on DS9, the search for Bajoran identity, and what the story has to say about the importance of fathers and the power of collective belief.

The infant does not go unnoticed, even before Wolf makes his introduction. Though Sirah claims much of her attention, Enya walking awkwardly behind her in an attempt to avoid stepping on the little girl's heels, crossing the threshold into another room has her eyes automatically scanning her surroundings. In seconds, she takes in the set of the table and the cooling meal, the stovetop burners still glowing with heat, the dishes piled high in the sink waiting to be washed, the windows, the doors, and the baby babbling in her highchair. Wolf obscures her vision for a moment and her gaze dips down to Sirah once again, but when her own name sounds, Enya comes to a halt, dragging Sirah back with her. Amber eyes lift to finally take in the second child in full.
Stars, she's tiny.
Enya thinks back, trying to remember if she ever actually saw one that little before, but recalls nothing. On the rare occasions when she does see the babies pass, they are often lying in suspension tanks or, if allowed to be conscious for one experiment or another, in some sort of...incubator-like device, similar to the suspension tanks but lacking the blue-green gel. Either way, both hide the infant from view. She only ever hears their cries.
Her gaze drifts slowly over Caelia, taking in her whispy red hair and chubby cheeks, small fingers grasping at Wolf and little legs dangling at his side.
"Oh," she breathes. Something about this one makes her feel a little nervous again, something fluttering uneasily in her belly, but she tries not to let it show. It wasn't like they did not warn her. She knew this one would be younger, smaller, more helpless, more frightened. It doesn't stop her from feeling as dangerous as a bull in a china shop.
She works to slip her hand out of Sirah's, spine straightening. Would this one understand if she spoke to her?
Lifting one hand, she flutters her fingers in a little wave the only way she knows how - her mother's way, though she does not know that.
"Hi, Caelia. It's nice to meet you too."

24: To Ponder
Masya Allah what an inspiration.
Setelah kagum dengan cerita Ust. Salim, ternyata sesi AAplus kemarin juga sama-sama membahas tentang Asy-Syifaa' binti Abdillah! Masya Allah.
Sesi Champs: Cottage Book Club dari Kak Aida & team ini disarikan dari buku Stars in the Prophet's Orbit, by Asma Tabaa.
Ya Allah alhamdulillah selalu suka belajar sirah :') Allahumma shalli 'alaa Muhammad. May Allah bless all the shahabahs and shahabiyahs around the Prophet saw.

22: Mensyukuri Sehat
(QS. 14:7)

DS9: "The Storyteller"
When Chief O'Brien takes Doctor Bashir to a Bajoran village and accidentally becomes the local shaman, it's a recipe for wackiness! Meanwhile, when Nog and Jake Sisko meet a girl, it's (also) a recipe for wackiness!
This episode is like two B-plots stapled together, with each hoping the other can carry it. It doesn't help that both storylines revolve around remote, isolated Bajoran communities. It feels like the writers know they can't do "planet of the week" too much on this show. So they're getting around it with "Bajoran village with a gimmick of the week."
The (unnamed) village O'Brien and Bashir visit has the most obvious gimmick. The (unnamed) "Sirah" leads the town in a ritual where he (surreptitiously) summons a cloud monster so he can lead them in chasing it away with good vibes. This could have easily been the premise of an original 1960s Star Trek episode. ("Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a Care Bear!") Nothing tethers it to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Bajor except the flimsy idea that the Sirah's magic bracelet contains a chunk of an Orb of the Prophets. I hate that; it's like when a Superman story goes out of its way to overuse kryptonite to explain everything weird, instead of just creating a new reason for weird things to happen.
The Paqu and Navot, whose dispute brings Varis Sul to the station to turn Nog's head, may not seem as gimmicky. But all the Bajoran worldbuilding thus far has implied a fairly globalized society, homogenized by the Cardassian occupation and united by the resistance. Now, though, we're presented with two factions set apart by their harsh territory and their bitter dispute. The Paqu are explicitly isolationist, to sell the idea that nobody (not even Major Kira) expects their leader to be a teenage girl. Evidently the Navot are similarly secretive--their whole beef is that they think Varis is being more unfair than her late father, and yet they failed to mention anything about her to the mediators.
The bottom line here is that both plots hinge upon our heroes encountering new cultures they don't know or understand. It goes against the spirit of anchoring this series to one location for a deep dive into one civilization. A deep dive shouldn't yield the same kind of stories we'd get visiting lots of alien planets. That just feels cheap, like the show is only anchored to Bajor so they can save money on costumes and makeup.
Fortunately, as it turned out most Bajor episodes weren't like this one. But looking back, I'm beginning to see how "The Storyteller" contributed to my initial aversion to Bajor episodes.

Sirah~ 💙 @starsirah-oc
5 quotes that remind me of you:
"She was beautiful, but not like those girls in the magazines. She was beautiful, for the way she thought. She was beautiful, for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved. She was beautiful, for her ability to make other people smile even if she was sad. No, she wasn't beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. She was beautiful deep down to her soul"
"She did not find the grim in falling apart. For every time she found herself to be broken, she knew she was brutally remaking herself, and collapsing to be reborn like a rioting star, haunting the dark sky"
"Don't hate. Smile go outside and play. Appreciate your surroundings. Be spontaneous. See the good in everyone. Love More"
"She was divine. She was magic. And she didn't have to wait on anyone to tell her in order for her to believe that about herself. And that's what made her so magically beautiful"
"She loves slow dancing in the kitchen, cuddle parties, kisses that leave her wanting more and the kind of love making that takes her breath away"

I finally decided to post a finnpoe short that I wrote like four years ago. It was originally going to be a small chaptered story, but I only wrote one segment. That segment does stand reasonably well alone, though; you’ll probably see hints of where I was headed, but I don’t think it feels unfinished, really.
I posted it on AO3.
title: the nature of family (link) genre: star wars sequel trilogy (but written when tfa was new) word count: 2094 summary: Now that the First Order is gone, Finn's top priority is helping former Stormtroopers overcome their conditioning and find their place in the galaxy -- especially kids who were still in training facilities, stolen from their families with rarely enough memories to help track those families down and reunite them. On this particular trip, he has good news, and he brings his new husband Poe along to give it: they've found the family of one of the former trainees, and they're going to bring him home. For the newlywed couple, this brings up thoughts of what sort of family they want to make for themselves.
teaser
A young girl Poe recognizes from last time he was here is the first to bounce up to Finn, her smile bright and expectant. She's maybe eight years old with light brown skin and a halo of wild dark hair. "Did you find them this time, Finn?" she asks.
Finn kneels down to face her and puts a hand on one of her shoulders. "Not yet, Sirah."
If she's disappointed, it passes in a flash. "It's okay — I remembered more! I remembered my birthday before… before I was taken away. These green banners with a gold symbol, and music like…" She half-hums, half-sings a bit of a tune, da duh da dum, and motions with her hands as if she's strumming an instrument.
It's a familiar tune, even to Poe, and for a moment he feels keenly sad for her because it must be a popular tune that is played everywhere — but the look on Finn's face, seen even in profile, stops him. He's got that same faraway look he wears when he describes the fragments of memory he's managed to dig up about his own family in the last couple of years. Poe squats beside him and puts a hand on his shoulder, creating a chain between the three of them. "What is it?"
But Finn just shakes his head a little, like he's clearing it, and then turns a smile on Sirah. "Maybe you can draw the symbol for me. And the — " He copies her strumming motion. "I need to talk to Sunmin now, okay? But I'll talk to you before we leave."
Sirah nods, eager, and darts off toward a table cluttered with art supplies. The children there part to allow her room, and one of the older girls gives her a fond smile.
There are still a lot of children watching Finn. He has a pull like gravity in this room. But where Poe has seen them swarm him with excited greetings before, this time they keep a respectful distance. It only takes a moment to realize why. A boy of about ten or eleven steps forward hesitantly, a fragile spark of hope in his eyes. "Did you say my name?"
"I did," Finn agrees. "We found your parents, Sunmin."
The boy's eyes glimmer and a smile breaks across his face, and then he's in front of Finn, arms wrapped around his neck. Finn smoothes a hand across the boy's back and glances over at Poe with an expression of pure joy.

Okay don’t get me wrong, I really love writing high class rich-bitch Gavin with the gold shades and The Look to go with the attitude, but consider: a Gavin that WANTS to be high class but isn’t quite there yet. Like, give me a Gavin that has no idea what ‘bottle service’ is, who sorta knows wine but can’t taste the difference between a Pinot Noir and a Merlot let alone a Sirah and a Cab Sav. Give me a Gavin who bought a nice looking cheap pair of sunglasses and has been repainting it with a gold marker any time the cheap varnish wears off. Give me a Gavin that got confused about the pillow mints the first time he stayed at a four star hotel, who didn’t realize he could take the shampoo the first time he went to a two star one. Give me a Gavin that tries to replicate how rich people look and act but who only has television to use as reference. Give me a Gavin that doesn’t know cars at all, who can’t remember the makes and models, who knows that Lamborghini is good but doesn’t recognize the logo. A Gavin that still thinks a hundred dollars is a lot, even after the crew takes off and he starts making millions. A Gavin that buys ugly vases because well that’s what rich people do now innit? A Gavin who knows he should ignore the waiters in restaurants, who knows he should hate ‘the help’ but who just can’t get himself to do it, can’t get himself to treat someone poorly just because of their job, their status, their upbringing. Who understands what a twenty dollar tip means to someone and so gives fifty. Give me street urchin Gavin who wanted so much, just so so much to be someone else, to be seen differently by the world. Who struggled and fought for where he is today, to find himself his family, his stability, who finally made it to the rich lifestyle he always pretended to have. Who faked it until finally, finally he made it.

TEFSIR ibn KATHIR: Surah Jinn Ayah 8-10
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
8 `And we have sought to reach the heaven; but we found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.'
9 `And verily, we used to sit there in stations, to (steal) a hearing, but any who listens now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.'
10 `And we know not whether evil is intended for those on the earth, or whether their Lord intends for them guidance.'
The Jinns stealing Information from the Sky before the the Messenger was sent and striking Them with flaming Fire after His Coming
Allah informs about the Jinns when He sent His Messenger Muhammad and revealed the Qur'an to him. Among the ways He protected it (the Qur'an) was by filling sky with stern guards guarding it from all of its sides. The devils were then expelled from the places where they used to sit prior to that. This was so that they could not steal anything from the Qur'an and tell it to the soothsayers, thereby causing matters to be confused and mixed up. If this happened it would not be known who was being truthful. Allah did this out of His kindness to His creation, His mercy upon His servants and His protection of His Mighty Book (the Qur'an). This is why the Jinns said,
And we have sought to reach the heaven; but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires. And verily, we used to sit there in stations, to (steal) a hearing, but any who listens now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.
meaning, whoever would like to steal some information by listening, he will find a flaming fire waiting in ambush for him. It will not pass him or miss him, but it will wipe him out and destroy him completely.
And we know not whether evil is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends for them guidance.
meaning, `we do not know if this -- the matter which has occurred in the sky -- is intended for those who are in the earth or if their Lord intends some guidance for them.'
They stated this in such a manner out of their etiquette in phrasing their speech, because they did not attribute the doing of evil to anyone and they attributed the good to Allah.
Verily, it has been recorded in the Sahih, And evil is not attributed to You (Allah).
It used to be that shooting stars (meteors) occurred before this, however it did not happen much, rather only occasionally. As was reported in the Hadith of Ibn `Abbas when he said, "While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah a shooting star flashed in the sky. So the Prophet said, What did you all used to say about this?
We replied, "We used to say that a great person has been born and a great person has died.''
The Prophet said,
This is not so, rather whenever Allah decrees a matter in the heaven...''
and then he went on to narrate the rest of the Hadith which we have already mentioned in its entirety in Surah Saba'.
This is what caused them to seek the reason for this occurrence. So they set out searching in the east and the west. Then they found the Messenger of Allah reciting (the Qur'an) while leading his Companions in prayer. Thus, they knew that this Qur'an was the reason for the sky being guarded. Therefore, some among them believed in it and the others became more rebellious in their transgression. A discussion of this has preceded in a Hadith of Ibn `Abbas concerning Allah's statement in Surah Al-Ahqaf, And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad) a group of the Jinn (quietly) listening to the Qur'an. (46:29)
There is no doubt that when so many shooting stars began appearing in the sky, it horrified humans and Jinns alike. They were very disturbed and alarmed by it. They thought that it was the destruction of the world.
As-Suddi said,
"The sky was never guarded except if there was a Prophet in the earth or the religion of Allah was victorious and dominant in the earth.''
So the devils before the time of Muhammad had taken sitting stations for themselves in the heaven of this world and they would listen to the matters that occurred in the heaven. But when Allah sent Muhammad as a Prophet and Messenger, they were suddenly pelted one night (with the flaming, shooting stars). So the people of Ta'if were frightened because of this and they began to say,
`The dwellers of the sky have been destroyed.'
This was because they saw the severe fires in the sky and the shooting flames. They began freeing their servants and abandoning their luxuries. So `Abd Yalayl bin `Amr bin `Umayr said to them and he was referred to for judgement among them "Woe to you O people of Ta'if! Hold on to your wealth and look at these guiding stars in the sky. If you see them remaining in their place, then the dwellers of the sky have not been destroyed, rather this has happened because of Ibn Abi Kabshah (-- meaning Muhammad).
And if you look and see that you can no longer see these stars, then verily the dwellers of the sky have been destroyed.''
So, they looked and saw that the stars still remained, and thus, they kept their wealth. The devils also were frightened during that night.
They went to Iblis and informed him of what happened to them. So he (Iblis) said, "Bring me a handful of dirt from every land so that I may smell it.''
So they brought it and he smelled it and said, "It is your friend in Makkah.''
Then he sent a group of seven Jinns to Makkah, and they found the Prophet of Allah standing in prayer in Al-Masjid Al-Haram while reciting the Qur'an. They drew near to him eager to hear the Qur'an, until their chests almost pressed against him. Then they accepted Islam and Allah revealed their matter to His Messenger .
We have mentioned this chapter in its entirety in the first section of the Kitab As-Sirah with lengthy discussion.
Allah knows best and unto Him is all praise and blessings.
