There are more meanings of Barbie characters' names?
I'll go through the whole list of Barbie's family and friends from Wikipedia for all the characters I didn't list before.
Barbie's family members
George (her father): "Farmer."
Margaret (her mother): "Pearl."
Tutti (her discontinued sister): An Italian word that means "all" – best known in the US from "tutti frutti" ("all fruits"), a term for mixture of chopped candied fruits or for sweets with a mixed fruit flavor. For Barbie's sister, it must be a nickname.
Francie (her cousin): Short for Frances, meaning "Frenchwoman."
Jazzie (another cousin): Jazz is a style of music; the slang term "jazzy" means bright, colorful, and showy, like the music. It could also be a nickname for Jasmine. It's obviously a nickname, at any rate.
Kirsten (another cousin): "Christian."
Lulu (another cousin): Probably short for Louise or Louisa, meaning "famous in battle," or for Lucinda or Lucia, meaning "light," or for Lucille, meaning "little light."
Millicent (her aunt): "Strong in work" or "unceasing strength."
Adele (another aunt): "Noble."
Female friends (she's had so many!)
Raquelle: "Ewe."
Grace: Self-evident.
Stacey: Derived from Anastasia, meaning "resurrection," or from Eustacia, meaning "fruitful."
P.J.: Unknown; we'd need to know what her initials stand for.
Steffie: Short for Stephanie, meaning "crown" or "wreath."
Cara: "Beloved."
Whitney: "White island."
Miko: "Delicious" or "entertaining."
Kira: "Young" or "black."
Becky: Short for Rebecca, meaning "tie" or "snare."
Kayla: Derived from Catherine, meaning "far off" or "pure."
Lea: "Weary."
Jamie: "Heel-grabber" or "supplanter."
Kelley: "Bright-headed."
Devon: "Calf" or "fawn."
Tracy: "Warlike" or "fierce."
Nia: "Bright" or "purpose."
Viky: Short for Victoria, meaning "victory."
Tara Lynn: Tara means "elevated place" or "star"; Lynn means "lake."
Lara: "Citadel."
Drew: Originally a male name derived from Andrew, meaning "manly."
Melody: Self-evident.
Simone: "Listening."
Shannen: A variant of Shannon, the name of a river in Ireland, which probably comes from a root word meaning "old" or "ancient."
Maiko: "Child in a linen robe" or "dancing child."
Harper: "Harp maker."
Renee: "Reborn."
Daisy: "Daisy flower," of course.
Tia: "Aunt."
Courtney: "Short nose."
Desiree: "Desired."
Ling: "Spirit" or "bell."
Dee Dee: Unknown; originally a nickname for anyone whose name started with D.
Dana: "God is my judge" or "wise."
Diva: A term for a singing star (especially an arrogant one), from the Italian word for "goddess." Obviously a nickname.
Tori: Short for Victoria, meaning "victory."
Susie: Short for Susan, meaning "lily."
Nichelle: A cross between Nicole, meaning "victory of the people," and Michelle, meaning "Who is like God?"
Marissa: "Of the sea."
Ana: "Grace" or "favor."
Gabbie: Short for Gabriella, meaning "God is my strength."
Chelsie: "Chalk wharf."
Marie: "Bitter," "drop of the sea," or "beloved."
Mari: "Truth," among other possible meanings.
Mariko: "Child of truth" or "jasmine child," among other possible meanings.
Isla: "Island."
Male friends
Blaine: "Yellow."
Derek: "Ruler of the people."
Curtis: "Courteous."
Todd: "Fox."
Steven: "Crown" or "wreath."
Kurt: "Brave counsel."
Ryan: "Little king."
Barbie's younger siblings have lots of friends too, but I'd be here all day if I tried to look up their names' meanings too.

Thank you for the tags today my lovelies @artsyunderstudy @martsonmars @forabeatofadrum @prettygoododds ❤️ sadly I still haven't had the time to take a look at your snippets (uni is killing me 💔) but I'm sure they're lovely! I can't wait to read your wips.
As for my own, well... I gave myself a head start on chapter 5 of wftbb (ew ugly acronym) and I thought I might finish it this week, but that was before I found out I have not one but TWO exams this week. Wednesday and Friday. RIP writing 🥲
Anyway. Hopefully next week will be calmer. Here's a snippet from chapter 3:
“I don’t see how quoting the Odyssey would help,” Penelope says as we walk along the edge of Victoria's park. “The whole story is about how some guy can’t seem to ever get home.” “But he does get there in the end,” Shepard chimes in.  “After ten fucking years,” Simon grumbles. He’s obviously not happy about the prospect of staying here so long.  I’m starting to share the sentiment.  “Odysseus faced a lot of shit in that time,” Bunce says. "Luckily it will be easier to send you back.”  “To another universe?”  “Have a little faith, Simon.” She says it without magic, but I think we could all use a little motivation boost.  So far, all our attempts—my attempts, specifically—have led Simon back to his flat in Hackney Wick. No matter if we were standing just outside his building or several streets away. Bunce even made me try out the spells she’d already used, but the outcome was the same.  “Maybe the spell can’t differentiate between universes,” she mused. “It’s taking Simon back to his home, the place where he lives, but in this universe.” We all agreed that made sense. So, we decided to go further away—Victoria’s seemed like a good place, full of secluded spots to do magic away from Normal eyes. We tried all the spells from Bunce’s list—including Home is where you hang your hat, and Home is where your heart is. (Simon didn’t go anywhere for that one, not even when I cast it.)
Also, basically all chapters of this fic + the title were named after lyrics of this song
(It's basically the theme song for this fic lol)
Tagging some friends: @cutestkilla @facewithoutheart @hushed-chorus @larkral (just realized yesterday that ADA is done!!! Congrats and can't wait to read the ending!) @captain-aralias @palimpsessed @whogaveyoupermission @aristocratic-otter @you-remind-me-of-the-babe @stitchyqueer @confused-bi-queer @ivelovedhimthroughworse see yall Wednesday! (Or whenever I can lol)

Simon, Victoria, Tabitha and Reuben Ewing live in Mwanza, Tanzania and have worked in the lakeside communities since 2017. This year Victoria has been very busy with her role of Trial Manager for a government health intervention. Within the trial 8,500 boys have now received the HPV vaccine. She is putting effort into her swimming, competing in her first ever swimming gala and winning two medals! Victoria is also an elected representative at the children’s school meaning she gives constructive input on various issues. Simon continues to work with the EI Tanzania national offices, overseeing finances and building capacity in the team. EI Tanzania is now a registered NGO and Simon is working with the other missionaries to ensure the organisation is compliant. The work continues to be challenging. With many community development projects ongoing and new villages starting, there is never a dull moment! Tabitha and Reuben are both enjoying the international school. Tabitha started year 7 in secondary, which has taken some adjusting, but we thank God she is becoming more confident and capable, helping as a leader in church Sunday school and holiday camps. Reuben is more active than ever, regularly swimming, doing sports and then playing with his friends after school. He is excited by adventure story books, and also loves the geology club at school. We continue to seek Gods will for our family as we strengthen the teams and church partners here in Mwanza, Proverbs 24 reminds us to seek God as we build our family routines and work commitments. By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. Proverbs 24:3-4

February 3, 2021: Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Tumblr media
The year: 1986. A small new fictionation is founded as part of a disparate group of similar territories. Near to another civilization founded by Woody Allen (we’ll get to him later this month, whoof), a new settlement was founded by one Nora Ephron. It began with Heartburn, a rom-com starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. While it was somewhat successful, it wasn’t exactly a dynamo by any means. And that is when Nora met the future Empress of her fictonation.
Her name was Meg Ryan, and the film...was When Harry Met Sally.
Tumblr media
Ephron only wrote this film, rather than direct it. But it didn’t matter, as this film was CRAZY successful (and I’ll be watching it later this month). Some years past, and both Ryan and Ephron rose in power. Ephron became a director, Ryan became a movie star, and the two pillars would reunite for greater things. And THAT is when the future Empress met her Emperor.
Enter Joe vs. the Volcano, where Meg Ryan...met Tom Hanks.
Tumblr media
Now, was this movie amazing? No, not from what I’ve heard. But the two new co-stars apparently made an impression on Hollywood at this point, as their respective stars would only grow brighter. And so, when 1993 came along, the three pillars finally met, and ascended to their true roles as the rulers of a now united Holy Romance Empire. And that film...was Sleepless in Seattle.
Tumblr media
Time to witness a nation RISE. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Recap
We start where all romantic comedies should start: at a Chicago graveyard!
Tumblr media
Architect Sam Baldwin’s (Tom Hanks) wife, Maggie, has sadly passed away, leaving Sam and their son, Jonah (Ross Malinger). Sam’s clearly broken, understandably, and he decides to move from Chicago in order to leave behind the bittersweet memories of his wife. And where he’s headed? You know where.
Jimmy Durante’s rendition of “As Time Goes By”
Jimmy Durante sings us in (I love this song, for the record), and we head not to Seattle, but to Baltimore, 18 months afterwards. There, reporter Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) is going to a Christmas party with her new fiancée, Walter Jackson (Bill Pullman), which is announced to great aplomb at the party. Her brother Dennis is played by Niles from Frasier (David Hyde Pierce), and I nearly spit out my sandwich.
Tumblr media
That night, Annie’s mother gives her her old wedding dress, and have a VERY frank conversation about their sexual relationships. It is...awkward. Anyway, the dress tears, which Annie sees as a sign. In any case, she still seems happy...I think. On the way to Walter’s parents’ place, she tunes into a radio talk show, where a child is making a Christmas wish to the station.
This child is, of course, Jonah, calling on behalf of his father from Seattle. He tells the host, Dr. Marcia Fieldstone (Caroline Aaron), that his father is lonely after his wife’s death, and that he wishes he had a new wife. She convinces Jonah to put him on the phone, and while he’s reluctant to do so (understandably), he accepts. All the while, Annie’s listening, and seems to sympathize deeply with him and his sarcastic responses.
Tumblr media
However, Sam begins to open up, and Dr. Fieldstone christens him “Sleepless in Seattle,” after the fact that he doesn’t sleep much at all these days. His story resonates with a number of people, Annie included. A few people call in to respond to him, and at the end of the call, he describes how much and why he misses his wife. And I gotta be honest, I’m with Annie here. It is...very moving.
Damn you, Tom Hanks, it’s only 20 minutes in, why are you already making me FEEEEEEL?
Tumblr media
The next day, it’s a splash, and over 2,000 women call in in response to this. This is discounted by her co-worker and friend, Becky (Rosie O’Donnell). At the New Year’s party soon after, she and Walter make a date to meet in New York City, and register for their eventual wedding. Meanwhile, Sam tucks Jonah in to sleep, as Nat King Cole serenades us (I ALSO love Nat King Cole, real talk) and Sam stares at the fireworks off of his houseboat.
Tumblr media
And, mentally haunted by the ghost of his wife, he’s seemingly literally haunted by the ghost of his wife, Maggie (Carey Lowell). The next morning, he goes to help a client, Barbara (Dana Ivey), and his co-worker Jay Matthews (Rob Reiner) with a house, and finds out that everybody knows who he is at this point. Additionally, Jonah also give the radio station their address, and MANY women are now soliciting Sam, including...his third-grade teacher. Ew. EW.
Sam and Jonah next have a talk about whether or not a prospective new wife would have sex with Sam, and I wonder if sexual conversations with your parents are supposed to be this common, or if I’m just crazy. Because me and my Dad? Nuh-uh. And no worries if your relationship with your folks is like this, but mine DEFINITELY IS NOT, lemme tell you.
Tumblr media
Annie and Walter prepare for bed, and Ray Charles sings them to sleep, followed by Carly Simon talking about the wee small hours of the morning. During those hours, Annie gets up, also unable to sleep, and turns on the Dr. Marcia Fieldstone show. During the highlight reel for the show, Disappointed in Denver notes that:
Everytime I come close to orgasm, he goes and makes himself a sandwich.
...Wow. Um. Asshole? And then Marcia tells her to make a sandwich for him beforehand, WHICH IS NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM. Anyway, Sam is also featured in that highlight reel, and Annie cries again as he talks about his wife, and it’s a disproportionately long excerpt compared to the others, what the hell? Marooned in Miami is DISAPPOINTED now.
Tumblr media
Annie goes to meet her brother Niles (he’s basically Niles from Frasier, seriously) the next day, and explains that she’s fantasizing about Sam, a man she’s never even MET. She’s also feeling doubt about her upcoming marriage, which is...interesting. I’ll get to that later. In Seattle, meanwhile, Sam asks Jay what it’s like as a single man in Seattle, and they have a conversation about how cute Sam’s butt is. Nice.
Upon the realization that his 9-year old son is hanging out with more girls than he is (yeah, there’s a kid named Jessica hanging out with him when Sam gets home, it’s awkward), Sam’s back in the saddle again (as the song indicates; that said, goddamn is the music choice on the nose sometimes, seriously). He calls a woman named Victoria (Barbara Garrick), and asks her out on a date.
Tumblr media
Annie’s watching the movie An Affair to Remember (lateeeeeer) at Becky’s, as she’s lamenting her fixation on Sam, while also struggling to fully understand how she feels about Walter. Becky RIGHTFULLY accuses her of believing in Hollywood, movie love, which is demonstrated by Annie’s meaningless platitudes about her supposed love for Walter. This is while she’s writing a letter to Sam, then aborts it when she realizes what she’s doing. She sits on the couch with Becky, they mouth the words together in the movie, and they cry while I laugh, because that was funny.
Things aren’t as jovial for Sam and Jonah, as Jonah’s had a nightmare, and the two reminisce over missing their mother. Sam notes that Maggie could peel an apple in one long...curly...strip. You mean...like Annie was doing earlier? I see what you did there, movie. I see what you did there. As if to compound their invisible connection, both of them sit on a dock, staring into two separate oceans at night.
Tumblr media
Sam proceeds to write a story for the paper on “Sleepless in Seattle,” and through some...mildly creepy personal invasion, she finds his address in Seattle, and a hell of a lot more personal information. Like I said, it’s a little creepy. Sam, meanwhile, is going on a date with Victoria, when Jonah opens a letter...from Annie.
Annie. What’re you doin’?
Jonah appears to IMMEDIATELY ship the two, but Sam quotes the coast-to-coast distance as being a bit too much, and goes on the date with Victoria. While on the date, Jonah tries to hook Sam up with Annie by getting him to agree to take them to New York City on Valentine’s Day. Damn, Jonah, you lookin’ to escape a whale, because you are BUILDING A GODDAMN SHIP
Tumblr media
Victoria, a woman with an amazingly obnoxious laugh, does not rub off well on Jonah, or me, or my girlfriend. I’m really hoping that somehow, in SOME WAY, Victoria and Walter get together. He’s boring, she’s obnoxious, who knows? They might like each other. My ship...is being built.
Jonah, meanwhile, is TAKING THE FUCKING WHEEL of this ship. He calls the radio station once again, and Annie is alerted to this by Becky. She wakes up, punching Walter in the process (dude gets HURT), and goes downstairs to listen. Jonah’s telling the station that Victoria SUUUUUCKS, and straight up calls her “a ho.” He hangs up abruptly, and screams to stop his father from kissing Victoria. Annie, meanwhile, listens to this in the closet for some reason.
Tumblr media
The next day, Jonah’s friend, Jessica, tells Jonah to send a letter to Annie on his father’s behalf. Meanwhile, Annie flies to Seattle in the guise of doing a story, when she’s actually going to try and meet Sam. Victoria, meanwhile, is leaving from the airport, where Sam and Jonah are seeing her off. Victoria basically implies that she’d like to ditch the kid and go fuck someplace sometime, which might FINALLY rub Sam the wrong way.
Sam talks to Jonah about the fact that he’s dating Victoria, not marrying her, and that she might not be the one for him. He also says that there’s no such thing as soul-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-mates.
Yeah, they actually did just do that. Sam loses Annie at the airport, after immediately chasing after her. They’re perfect for each other, as Annie goes RIGHT to Sam’s houseboat address. She hangs around the neighborhood, and sees them having fun on the beach together as Harry Connick Jr. plays in the background. That night, she confides in Becky about her guilt in lying to Walter.
And if I can just say this...yeah, THAT isn’t great. I get that there’s some cinematic paegentry to the whole thing, but, like...tell your FIANCEE about your FEELINGS. It’s hard, yeah, duh, but YOU GOTTA DO IT. You most certainly owe it to Walter. At least she appears to know it, though.
Annie at the hotel
The next day, Annie goes once again to weirdly spy on Jonah, and sees him hug a woman very happily, and of course believes that that’s Victoria. However, this is his friend, Suzy (Rita Wilson), who’s visiting with her husband, Greg (Victor Garber). In any case, this leads to Sam and Annie seeing each other for the first time. He says hello. She says hello. Then she almost gets hit by a taxi, and she IMMEDIATELY flies back home WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We find this out later, but the taxi and the fact that all she could say was “Hello” is actually all a reference to the film seen earlier, An Affair to Remember (again, later this month). This is also part of the repeating motif that this film has: signs. Y’know, the kind of “IT’S A SIGN” thing. However, the real twist here is that the signs are the ones that they can’t see. Like the apple and the hello thing. Not yet, anyway.
Also, dear lord, An Affair to Remember is just making EVERY woman in the film cry, even when they’re TALKING about it. And every time, the men just look at each other like “WOMEN, with their EMOTIONS and their VAGOOOOOOS.” Jesus, ‘90s movies. Even JESSICA (Gaby Hoffman), Jonah’s friend, the LITTLE GIRL, is crying at this movie. JESUS, I’m really interested in seeing this movie now.
Tumblr media
Jessica and Jonah start conspiring on how to get to New York to meet Annie, and do so by FAKING AIRLINE TICKETS OK THEN. Meanwhile, Annie’s given up on the whole “Sleepless in Seattle” thing, and goes to meet Walter for their Valentine’s date in NYC. Walter rightfully comments that Annie’s seemed distant, and here’s the thing: Walter deserves better than this. Yeah, he’s BORING AS SHIT, but the dude’s committed to her, and she’s amazingly flaky in comparison. I dunno, maybe it’s because it’s Bill Pullman, but I feel bad for him.
Anyway, in New York, the two begin to rekindle their relationship, and Walter gets a ring for her at FUCKING TIFFANY’S HOLY SHIT. Meanwhile, Sam’s THIRSTY AS FUUUUUUUCK, and is leaving to spend the weekend with Victoria, which Jonah is NOT a fan of. This ship is gonna SAIL if JONAH HAS TO FLY TO NEW YORK CITY HIMSELF
Tumblr media
So, Jonah flies to New York City himself, in order to...meet his new mother. This movie has some VERY interesting issues, Jesus. Jonah does, indeed go to the top of the Empire State Building to look for Annie, and he asks all the girls on the Observation Deck if they’re Annie. Which, of course, none of them are. Why?
Annie’s at dinner, that’s why, and at the FUCKING RAINBOW ROOM DEAR LORD HOW MUCH MONEY DOES WALTER MAKE? Sam also makes his way to New York, probably to DESTROY HIS CHILD
Tumblr media
And at dinner, Annie actually redeems herself by telling Walter the ENTIRE TRUTH about her feelings, and about “Sleepless in Seattle.” And Walter is a CLASSY-ASS GUY ABOUT THE ENTIRE THING, and the two break off their engagement amicably. Annie says that she doesn’t deserve Walter, and BY GOD SHE’S RIGHT. Walter’s a sweet dude. And as soon as they break up...a sign.
Tumblr media
Sam finds Jonah on the Observation Deck, and the two tearfully reunite. And as they two unite, and everybody else leaves the Observation Deck as it closes for the night, Annie rushes on her way there. An Affair to Remember is invoked one last time, as Annie convinces the guard to let her up there. But, OF GODDAMN COURSE...she goes up in one elevator, and Sam and Jonah head down in another.
But wait. Isn’t that Jonah’s backpack on the ground of the Observation Deck?
youtube
Yup. THERE’S the happy ending we’re lookin’ for. They finally formally introduce each other, and Sam says that they’d better leave...ALL of them, together. Love at first sight. PLAY US OUT JIMMY DURANTE!!!! And yeah, I know that Celine Dion sings the end credits song, but NOPE! TAKE ME AWAY, JIMMY! MAKE ME HAPPY!
And that was Sleepless in Seattle! And again, I liked it! I’ll get more into it during the Review!

off the rack #1129
Monday, September 24, 2018
Hello all you off the rackers. How's it going eh? I've been away the last couple of weeks on a trip out west. We landed in Victoria, BC on September 6 and did a road trip visiting Duncan, Comox and Tofino. Had a wonderful reunion with my childhood friend from the Glebe in Comox who I haven't seen in nearly 25 years. Time in Tofino was spent walking the beaches and enjoying all sorts of culinary delights. If you've never been to Vancouver Island you should go just for the drive through the mountains. We could see a glacier from the air B&B in Tofino that we stayed in. Penny and I spent an extra couple of days in Vancouver before returning to Ottawa where we had a lovely dinner with some Comicshop alumni from the 1980s. Thanks to Brent, Colleen, Keith, Louise and Scooter for showing up and catching up.
A tornado touched down in our area on Friday, September 21. The power at the house went out at 7 PM and we didn't get it back until 11 AM on Saturday. No damage in our neighbourhood but others were heavily damaged. Our new fence held up excellently, thanks to Keith Astley. We were very lucky to only be inconvenienced a little. I feel for the folks who lost their houses and businesses. I had to drive around on the weekend and was glad to see most people being patient and courteous at the intersections where the traffic lights were not working. I did see a few anal pores who thought that the rules didn't apply to them and made other drivers hesitate and thus slow the whole process down even more.
This may very well be the last off the rack that I write. Comet Comics is closing down it's current location and moving its subscription service to a used book store up the street. I will be out of a job and will not be able to borrow comic books to read anymore. Thanks to Brent at The Comicshop in Vancouver, I found out that I started to write for the newsletter back in 1986 with an editorial and then writing the Newswatch section. My first off the rack was in 1994 and I have been doing it weekly since then with only a few breaks. I love sharing my thoughts about the comics that I read but it sometimes feels like I'm doing an unpaid job too. Thanks to Ron Van Leeuwen at The Silver Snail and Heather MacDonald at Comet Comics for allowing me to enjoy my comic book hobby gratis. I wish you all the best. Thanks to the folks that read my musings and the comments you've shared with me. You guys take care, okay?
Cover #1 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) David Mack (art) Zu Orzu (colours) Carlos M. Mangual (letters). Things start off at a comic con where we meet Max Field, comic book artist. It looked to me that this was going to be about comic book covers like the reprints in the back of the book of the ones David Mack has done, but then we meet a super fan of Max's with very deep pockets. Her name is Julia. The story gets a lot more interesting when Julia shows up at a con in London, England and tells Max what her job is. David Mack's art is very distinctive but I didn't guess that this was drawn by him until I got to some painted panels later. This is an intriguing new book and I would put it on my "must read" list.
The Immortal Hulk #6/LGY #723 - Al Ewing (writer) Lee Garbett (art) Paul Mounts (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I am very impressed with the writing. It's sophisticated and thought provoking. The new military organisation set up to handle the Hulk is creepy and eerie. This issue sets up a big fight between the Hulk and the Avengers so it looks like next issue will be a smashing good time.
The Dreaming #1 - Simon Spurrier (writer) Bilquis Evely (art) Mat Lopes (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). The Sandman is AWOL, the Dreaming is crumbling and its denizens don't know what to do. Lucien the librarian is in charge but he seems overwhelmed by the chaos around him. Meanwhile, new character Dora is hopping about between dreams and we get a glimpse of her true self. There is so much that is intriguing about this new Vertigo series based on Neil Gaiman's creations that I think Sandman fans will be pleased.
Return of Wolverine #1 - Charles Soule (writer) Steve McNiven (pencils) Jay Leisten (inks) Laura Martin (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). I consider myself to be a pretty good artist spotter. I can flip open a comic book and tell you who drew it but this time I was fooled and thought that Barry Windsor-Smith did the art for this issue. I still enjoyed the visual feast featuring Logan's return to the racks. Some fans might not be satisfied with no real explanation of how Logan came back to life and starts fighting the bad guys but I just accepted that he's here and has a mission to save the world. His foes are formidable and he starts off wearing the old familiar yellow and blue costume but changes by the last page to a more contemporary one. As much as I liked this getting a running start I do hope they tell us how Wolverine gets resurrected down the line.
The Immortal Hulk #5/LGY #722 - Al Ewing (writer) Joe Bennett (pencils) Ruy Jose (inks) Paul Mounts (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I had a feeling I was missing something when I was reading #6 yesterday. This book is hitting the racks every two weeks and I didn't get a chance to read this issue before leaving on my trip to Vancouver Island two weeks ago. I'm glad I did because it explains the mysterious reflection that Bruce sees in the mirror in #6. I thought it was Major Talbot or the Leader with a normal sized head but it's not. Here we have the Hulk fighting Sasquatch and saving Walter Langkowski from himself. This issue also emphasises the fact that this new Hulk isn't just a mindless monster. I really like that this Hulk can have a regular conversation.
Adventures of the Super Sons #2 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Carlo Barberi (pencils) Art Thibert (inks) Protobunker (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). How are a green Kryptonite weakened Superboy and a bound Robin going to defeat the Gang of young super villains? They get help, that's how. The last page made me smile because it uses a classic twist from the days of "The Death of Superman". This is a fun book.
Avengers #7/LGY #697 - Jason Aaron (writer) Sara Pichelli (pencils) Sara Pichelli & Elisabetta D'Amico (inks) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's the origin story of the very first Ghost Rider plus a super villain that Wolverine fans will recognise. This issue is a nice segue to…
Avengers #8/LGY #698 - Jason Aaron (writer) David Marquez (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). The current Ghost Rider, Roberto Reyes, arrives at the new Avengers headquarters and is officially made a member. The new HQ at the North Pole is very cool and pure comic book plausible. After a quick tour the team gets a global alert that Roxxon is up to no good and the battle cry is uttered. It's off to the southern seas and a confrontation with an old ally. Imperius Rex!
Batman #54 - Tom King (writer) Matt Wagner (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Dick Grayson sticks around after Batman and Catwoman's break up to help Bruce get through it. It's a good excuse to remind us of their partnership. I loved how Dick's humour contrasted with Bruce's dour demeanour. Matt's art was a bonus for me.
Batman #55 - Tom King (writer) Tony S. Daniel (pencils) Tony S. Daniel & Danny Miki (inks) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). The Dynamic Duo continues to keep Gotham City safe while a one-armed stranger arrives to go about an unknown mission. That mission is revealed in the shocking last page. This incident may just top the Killing Joke.
Pearl #2 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Michael Gaydos (art & colours) Josh Reed (letters). When the first caption of the first page reads "years ago" you know it's origin story time. This story about a Yakuza tattoo artist/assassin is very different from Brian Michael Bendis's super hero stuff for DC. His work on Superman doesn't engage me like this book, Cover, and Scarlet do. I think it's because he's got to write the Man of Steel to appeal to younger readers too. Maybe I've outgrown Superman.
West Coast Avengers #2/LGY #104 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Stefano Caselli (art) Triona Farrell (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This is a little more sophisticated than the Adventures of the Super Sons but it's still a lot of fun. I especially like Stefano Caselli's facial expressions. The B.R.O.D.O.K. AKA Bio-Robotic Organism Designed Overwhelmingly for Kissing is an upgrade from the super villain M.O.D.O.K. AKA Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, but he's still not nice.
Thor #5/LGY #711 - Jason Aaron (writer) Christian Ward (art & colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). We take a break from the present and travel to the far flung future to see if Old Thor can save the universe from dying. He meets an old friend who turns out to be not so friendly. The amalgam of Wolverine and the Phoenix Force is cool but wait until you see the huge mash up on the last page as the villain is revealed. This guy makes Thanos look like Forbush Man.

Note
Rege and Phoebe did a British Vogue shoot, which is actually very common for British actors in period dramas (Poldark got one, god even Victoria and TWP got featured in British Vogue) so I cannot Imagine Jonathan and Simone not doing the same. I'm expecting a lot of covers/features in magazines for them separately and together.
Sigh, lol. I didn't find that shoot super inspiring. Honestly, EW's big "couples" shoots are campier but always more eye-catching. You had the dumb as hell but admittedly attention-grabbing shoot Rob and Kristen did promoting Twilight back in the day.... then the less attention-grabbing but prettier "we're in a forest" photoshoot... Everything Cait and Sam have done for Outlander, of varying quality levels. The brilliant shoot Nick and Elle did for The Great, which definitely got people watching that show when they didn't before.
And to paraphrase Crazy Rich Asians, British Vogue???? If they'd worn the Ortega they would have gotten into American Vogue.

“Are you like Magnus?”
So this is a Simon Centric story that kind of belongs to a previous installment where Simon saves Sebastian Verlac from being stabbed by one crispy boi. Anywho, it’s basically Simon talking about his feelings with Jace and Alec. Parabatai friendship, Simon/Alec friendship, Jace/Simon friendship, a general understanding that Magnus is the King of Fashion, Jace being a fry thief, you know, happy things.
“Are you like Magnus?” Simon stared at the shadowhunter with a confused expression.
“Jace, what the hell? You know I’m a vampire. Right? Did the fangs not give it away?”
Now it was Jace’s turn to roll his eyes.
“Not like that you idiot. I meant like...” Suddenly Jace got quiet, opting to stare at his boots than look at Simon directly. Simon quirked an eyebrow.
“Like what then? Fashionable, because let me tell you I could not pull off half of his outfits.” He heard someone snort behind him and turned to see Alec trying to hide his smirk while holding cheese fries.
“Of course not. You look like a trash can.” He stated, moving to sit next to the vampire. Simon gazed mockingly at the taller Lightwood, a hand over his heart.
“Why Alec, no wonder Magnus swoons, why with such a way with words, I don’t know how you managed being in the closet as long as you did.” Alec merely flipped him the bird. They turned their heads back to Jace when he cleared his throat.
“No, I meant. Umm...what’s the word Magnus calls himself Alec? Be-sexual?” Alec rolled his eyes.
“Bi. Bisexual, that’s the word. By the Angel, Jace.” His parabatai waved his hand dismissively.
“Yeah, that one. Are you that?” He asked, focusing back on Simon. Simon shrugged, before move his head around in a ‘maybe, kind of’ motion.
“I’m not bisexual per se, I’m actually pansexual, but in some places people consider bi to be an umbrella term for it, but in other places they treat it as a separate kind of thing. If I’m being honest, I just love to love people and I have no real limits to who I’m capable of loving.” He finished off with a shrug. He felt Alec and Jace stare at him and he really wanted to vampire speed away from their gazes. It was always super awkward for him to explain his sexuality since it wasn’t a really well known or televised orientation. Still, he thinks it makes sense.
Alec stared for a little while longer, before nodding.
“That’s cool. I didn’t really think there was anything else besides straight, gay, and bi.” Jace nodded, before stealing one of Alec’s fries. His parabatai swatted at him, but his fry was gone.
“That’s understandable, you guys were raised in a really homophobic place. And if I’m being honest, most mundanes don’t know other sexualities exist outside of those three either. Really its the education system’s fault, but I’ll spare you the details of my extensive three a.m. red-bull, wikipedia lgbt adventure.”
Jace snorted, as he’d seen first hand how out of hand Simon’s red-bull research went. Seriously, he never knew so much about the history of fashion until Simon came into his room, bored to tears and wanting to learn all about the history of the Victoria Secret Fashion show. He watched as Alec seemed to try and find the words to continue the conversation. If Jace was being honest, sometimes the similarities between Simon and Alec were a little off putting. He wonders if in another life Alec would be like Simon, bubbly and unabashedly curious. They already shared the unwavering loyal and unprecedented capacity to love people. Alec was just way cooler and Simon tripped on air. Then again, his parabatai wasn’t exactly graceful either. He wonders whether they noticed their similarities.
“Where do you get your information? You know, about LGBT?” Alec mumbled, clearly embarrassed to ask Simon anything. If the vampire noticed the hesitation, he didn’t mention it.
“I usually get them from the library, I can get you some books. They have a pretty decent collection and occasionally I can convince them to purchase newer, more accurate books.” He replied cheerfully, enjoying that Alec was actually talking to him about a topic that didn’t make him feel inferior to shadowhunters in anyway. Alec nodded and mumbled a thank you, and Simon gave him a blinding smile, before pausing and turning back to Jace.
“Why did you ask? About me being pan?” He questioned, narrowing his eyes. Jace smirked before leaning towards Simon.
“Well cause I saw someone checking out a certain tall blonde shadowhunter.” He drawled wiggling his eyebrows. Simon scrunched his face up in disgust.
“Ew, no, why? Look objectively you’re attractive, but you are so into my best friend it’s nauseating.” Jace sighed, before cuffing him on the head.
“Not me, you dumbass.” He muttered. Alec perked up.
“He’s right. He said tall shadowhunter. Jace over here is a small man.” He added nonchalantly, causing Jace to flip him the bird.
“Not everyone’s a giant Alec.” His parabatai just stuck his tongue out. “Anyway, I meant Sebastian Verlac. You know, the guy you saved like some damsel in distress, which honestly is so new for you, since you’re usually the damsel.” Simon rolled his eyes.
“It’s true, being the hero was exhausting. I’ll gladly go back to playing the damsel if that means I get carried around in strong arms.” He quipped, causing Alec to nod in agreement. Jace rolled his eyes.
“Yes, Simon, you can remain a damsel. You’re still avoiding the question. Do you like Sebastian Verlac?” He question. Alec cuffed his parabatai on the head.
“Stop being so nosy. By the Angel, you’re a worse gossip than Raj.” He reprimanded before turning to Simon.
“So Sebastian?” He teased, and Jace gawked at him while Simon blushed.
“Wait, why can you ask, but I can’t?” Alec rolled his eyes.
“Because I’m gay and you’re a hetero, this is beyond your level of expertise.” Jace rolled his eyes, but quieted down anyway. He still took Alec’s fries. He’ll stay silent, but he’ll eat. Simon laughed, enjoying how open Alec was now about his sexuality. There were a lot a bad things that happened in life, but being in the closet was definitely a tough one. He remembers. When Alec turned his attention back to him he sighed.
“Well I mean, he’s cute. And he’s kind of easy to talk to. He’s a shadowhunter, but he’s not like you guys right? You and Jace are like tough guys and Sebastian’s kind of like...like me. A little nerdy and clueless, but super sweet. I don’t know, I don’t even know if he likes guys and the way the Institute still treats you, despite you being the head, you know, is telling of how much underlying homophobia is still here. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that, just cause I like him doesn’t mean anything will happen.” He rushed out in one breathe. Because really, talking about his feelings with Clary was hard sometimes, but talking with Alec and Jace, that was a different level of hard.
He didn’t really know how to go into detail about how he’s never really dated a guy before, or the fact that the last guy he did like called him some not so nice things and made it a point to make his life miserable. And of course, it’s not like Simon is unfamiliar with rejection or unrequited feelings, but it’s exhausting having your heart on your sleeve. Still, talking to someone couldn’t hurt, right? He felt Alec pat him on the shoulder, in a very Alec-esque way.
“Well, I know I got lucky with Magnus being so open and knowledgeable and patient, so I don’t know how it was like to be him, putting himself on the line for a Shadowhunter, but if it’s any consolation, I think Sebastian might surprise you. ” He replied, looking into Simon’s eyes. The vampire really wanted to believe him, he really did, but he wasn’t so sure. Still it was nice to have the support.
“Thanks Alec.” He whispered. Alec patted his shoulder once more before getting up.
“Alright, I’ve got to go and yell at Raj about breaking the coffee machine, Jace you can have the rest of my fries since you’re an asshole and eating them anyway,” Jace grinned and mumbled a thank you around the four fries he had shoved into his mouth. “And Simon, I expect the library books on my desk by tomorrow.” With that he walked away.
“Aw, he likes me. I’m so happy.” Simon teased. Jace shrugged.
“I think he’s just glad that there are more LGBT people he can talk about Magnus to.” He added.
“Let me have this you fry leech.” He grumbled at the blonde, who simply threw his head back and laughed.

Why Lily James Left Downton Abbey (& Why She's Not In The Movie)
Tumblr media
Here's why Lily James left the Downton Abbey TV series and why she won't be in the Downton Abbey movie. From the end of Downton Abbey season 3 through season 5, James starred as Lady Rose MacClare, the cousin of Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and the great-niece of Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), the Dowager Countess. Cousin Rose essentially replaced Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay), the youngest daughter of Lord Grantham, who was killed off in Downton Abbey season 3.
The effervescent Lady Rose brought a new kind of rebellion to Downton Abbey, especially for its early 1920s time period. Rather self-centered at first, Rose's worldview greatly expanded and she came to care a great deal more for others. In turn, her new progressive views, especially in regards to her romantic relationships, sparked scandal at Downton Abbey. Rose was romantically involved with under-gardener Samuel Thawley and dated an African-American musician and singer named Jack Ross. When she was finally married, Lady Rose's choice for her husband was Atticus Aldridge, a Jewish banker whose family hailed from Russia. After Rose and Atticus married in 1924, they moved to New York City and Rose gave birth to a daughter named Victoria Rachel Cora Aldridge. Finally, Rose and Atticus appeared in the Downtown Abbey series finale, set during Christmas 1925.

After both Dan Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley, and Jessica Brown-Findlay's main characters were killed off from Downton Abbey, fans were surprised and disappointed when Lily James didn't return for the final season, which aired in 2015. But this was because, in real life, James' star was quickly rising as she had been cast in the title role of Disney's Cinderella. Though James continued to work in prestige television, like starring as Natasha Rostova in BBC's War & Peace, her movie career skyrocketed. In the last few years, James starred in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Baby Driver, Darkest Hour, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Netflix, and Yesterday. James is so in demand that Downton Abbey's creator Julian Fellowes has called her "our greatest success story."
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Fellowes cites James' busy career as the main reason why she won't appear as Lady Rose in the Downton Abbey movie. As Fellows jokingly told EW, "She can't be in it [because] she's in every other film in the world at the moment." Although James' high profile would seem like all the more reason why she should be part of the Downton Abbey film, Fellowes further explained that besides working around James' busy schedule to join the Downton Abbey movie, there were other creative reasons to omit Lady Rose from the film: "Lily is now a big star, and it would’ve been incredibly difficult for her to find time in her schedule to come and play essentially a supporting role in Downton when her career was in a different place when she was with us."
There's truth to Fellowes' statement. Among Downton Abbey's female ensemble, Lady Rose would essentially be a supporting character, ranking behind Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Cousin Isobel (Penelope Wilton), and the Dowager Countess, not to mention the downstairs staff of Downtown like Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan), Anna (Joanne Froggatt), Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol), and Daisy (Sophie McShera). Furthermore, the Downton Abbey film's plot will have King George V (Simon Jones) and Queen Mary (Geraldine James) visiting Downton. With so many characters in the movie, James would likely have been able to only make a cameo appearance as Lady Rose, one that wouldn't have much impact on the movie's story, especially since Rose's storyline in Downton Abbey has been resolved.
Still, for her part, James has gone on the record that she "would have loved" to have been a part of the Downton Abbey movie and reunite with the cast and series that launched her to stardom. Indeed, Lady Rose's presence will be missed by Downton's fans, but if the film does well at the global box office, it's quite possible Lily James could return as Lady Rose for Downton Abbey 2.
