Baba Jaimal Singh, and other disciples of Soamiji Maharaj, were initiated in Soamiji's meditation room at his home in Panni Gali, Agra.
"Swami Ji then began to instruct him [Baba Jaimal Singh] into the theory and practice of Surat Shabd Yoga, and when the instructions were over, asking the youth of seventeen to sit down for meditation, he left the room.
"As soon as Jaimal Singh sat down for meditation, he got lost in samadhi. The night came and passed away, the day broke, but he continued motionless, lost in the inner bliss he had discovered. Another day saw itself swallowed by the night, and the night saw itself replaced by another day, and yet the youth sat lost to the world around him.
"When some forty-eight hours had thus gone by, Swami Ji asked some of the disciples if they knew where the visitor from the Punjab had disappeared. 'We saw him two days ago at the Satsang,' they said, 'but we have not seen him since.'
"Swami Ji smiled and proceeded straight to the little room where he had left his latest disciple and which none had entered for two days. He placed his hand on Jaimal Singh’s head, and when the latter’s soul returned to the normal physical consciousness and he opened his eyes, he saw his Guru beaming at him. Our communities are still reeling from the incident that took place this September 12, 2020. On that day, a member of the Canadian community, Mohamed-Aslim Zafis, was ruthlessly killed in front of the IMO Mosque in Toronto by an individual with apparent links to a neo-Nazi group.
This attack did not happen in isolation. This attack is one in a long series of a chain of horrifying attacks on racialized communities in Canada. Faith-based communities, as well as racialized communities, have faced attacks on our homes, our places of worship, our children, and our congregants at the hands of white supremacist organizations.
We are calling on the federal government to establish a national action plan on dismantling white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups that threaten Canadians who are Black, Indigenous, Jewish, Muslim, or Sikh, amongst other communities.
In 2015, according to counter-terrorism experts in Canada, we had 100 alt-right or white supremacist groups operating in Canada. Now, we have over 300. Some of these groups train with explosives and live ammunition. Others have shown up to intimidate racialized communities – and they operate from coast to coast. Therefore, we need bipartisan action from all political parties to counter these groups.
While we recognize and appreciate that last year, two organizations affiliated with white supremacy were banned under the listing provisions of the Criminal Code, far more needs to be done.
We look forward to ongoing dialogue with the government to ensure that action be taken now. An attack like this should never happen again.

What lead you to pursue a career in acting? Did you have an “aha” moment when you realized that this is what you wanted to do, or was your desire to act present from the start?
Storytelling. Using it as a medium to illustrate new ideas/places was super powerful to me as a kid and I’ve always been drawn to it. Initially, I wanted to direct. My mother encouraged me to take film classes as a teenager. That’s when I popped in front of the camera on a friend’s short. It was a moment I haven’t forgotten. I was instantly hooked. I also found a responsibility and purpose within in. When I was growing up, people of color often didn’t see characters who looked like us in films and TV, and neither did our families, even though a big part of narrative engagement is imagining yourself in the protagonist’s shoes. But when we watch our reality reflected on TV or in film, our potential becomes limitless. The ability to tell your own story and to be heard is the very thing that moves our culture forward. That is how we can ultimately escape those limited and often inaccurate portrayals minted in the stone age and surpass them.
You’ve played a lot of unique characters throughout your career. Would you say that you bring a piece of yourself to every role you play?  Is there a character with whom you have most identified with, or one that you found most challenging to relate to? 
I try to bring some of myself to the roles I play. I think to be authentic to an experience we’ve not encountered ourselves, pulling from the world around us is key. There are two characters in particular that stand out for me. Hassan Kadam in THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY was a role that didn’t come with the resistance for a person of color to play the protagonist. The story is about a young chef who immigrates to France from India after his mother dies. I think the film encourages folks to go beyond their limits. Hassan was quiet and introverted — not qualities I can readily related to, but the story inspired as well as pushed me. In 90210, I played a character suffering from a terminal illness. Raj was a simple but real portrayal of a young Indian-American guy in California. The response to character was profound. Here was an Indian teenager included in an iconic American brand without typical stereotypes. He wanted to live his last days fearlessly.

What attracts you most to a role? 
The character and his point of view on the events happening around him. If the role challenges me to think differently or it scares the shit out of me, I’m in. 
A lot of people would consider your breakout role to be The 100 Foot Journey. Was there a definitive moment in your career when you thought, “Yes, I’ve made it”?
I knew it was a big deal, a life changing ride. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Steven Spielberg, Juliet Blake and Oprah Winfrey and everyone at Dreamworks / HARPO put it together. They really supported the film. But that feeling of “I’ve made it” can’t be taken literally. I think making it means something different to everyone. For me, making it might just be the ability to contribute to our business in a way that pushes those in power to think differently; to be courageous storytellers. I think to do that we have to keep making our own stuff, we work together, we unionize. We show folks that our stories have real value and make money. I think making it is the ability to pursue exactly that. The Hundred-Foot Journey opened that door for me.
You’re currently a part of The Resident. What’s it like working on a medical drama? What’s the biggest difference between this character and those who you’ve played in the past?
I was attracted to the role because Devon had a huge journey to embark on. In a series, it’s exciting to play a character that has somewhere to go — a blank canvas in some ways. He starts off as a resident right out of med school. The sky’s the limit for this dude. It may not seem revolutionary for me to play an Indian-American doctor. It might seem ordinary, but that’s exactly why it’s important. Devon is what the American dream looks like, to me. He’s from an immigrant family, graduates top of his class with hopes to heal people and change lives. To me, Devon stands out from other roles because he is so carved into the culture of today’s America — an Indian doctor. Children of immigrant parents occupy medicine in a big way. I want Devon to represent a piece of that. He is sometimes a hero, he’s fallible, he’s impulsive, he’s cocky and when he gets it wrong, people die. The stakes are huge.
Anytime there’s a cab driver on screen, it’s imperative he be played by a South-Asian. But most of America’s TV Doctors are actually non-Indian, and I realized that’s not what a modern American hospital or medical school looks like. In the US, South-Asian doctors outnumber cardiac ICUs and overwhelm medical schools. People say, “what’s wrong with stereotypes? In real life, there’s truth to these stereotypes, and don’t you want the world to feel real on TV?” It is true that some of the leaders in medicine like Atul Gawande, Siddartha Mukerjhee, Sandeep Jauhar are all Indian. So to move the needle, this idea must extend to our heroes as well. That is the only way this works. Yes, Devon is brown and he won’t be hovering in the background without a perspective.

You’ve recently gotten into directing. Is this something you’ve always wanted to do, or a more recent ambition? 
Always. Directing Fifteen Years Later was a passion I’ve wanted to exercise for a while. It was one of the most awesome experiences I’ve had. Acting and directing at the same time is wild. I loved all of it and tried to be aware of which hat to wear when. I wanted to craft a story from start to finish. This one in particular I could speak to since it was personal for me. The story is based on real events from friends and an experience I had over 15 years ago. It talks about bias and violence in a post-9/11 era. Racially motivated crime towards people of South Asian, Sikh, Arab and Muslim has seen an undeniable resurgence since 45’s presidency. Terlok Singh, a Sikh deli owner from New Jersey, was recently stabbed to death at his store. According to Dr. Simran Jeet Singh, Senior Religion Fellow for the Sikh Coalition, this was the third attack on a Sikh in the last three weeks of the incident.
My hope is that Fifteen Years Later can shine a light on communities who face this type of profiling and violence. It is a look at an epidemic holding our communities under fire. We partnered with Vigilant Love, 18MillionRising, and White People 4 Black Lives and hosted a panel in LA. It sparked a discussion about race, identity, policing and our law enforcement.
You recently had a son! Congratulations! What is it like being a dad? Does this give you a new perspective for future roles? 
100% It is a profound relationship. Children teach us more about ourselves than we could ever know. You reflect, discover, prioritize, problem solve and ultimately learn how to quiet the noise and be present. As a new dad, you’re learning about things you’d otherwise know nothing about. It’s impossible to get too comfortable because the minute you think you have it down, an inevitable curve ball hits you in the face! It’s also why representation is so important. We want our youth to feel embedded in our culture. We want them to feel visible and given our sociopolitical landscape it’s more important now than ever. My hope for him is that he exercises compassion and gratitude, that he understands the difference between strength and weakness, and that he respects the voice of other people.

Youth and Old Guard
It is generally observed that in many organisations, or even in national politics, the old guard is at the verge of retirement and there is a general complaint that the youngsters are not yet ready to take over. The youngsters are being blamed as careless, a pampered lot and irresponsible. There is fear of widening skill gap and vacuum at leadership level. Though I am not a management graduate nor I am a student of psychology, but based on my some practical experience at various rungs of management, I am sharing my some thoughts, which I tried to follow, or felt the need for them. I request others to pitch in to contribute for better solutions to this serious issue, which is looming large before many organisations and their managements, calling for urgent redressal.
When we go through Hindu religious scriptures and texts or many Hindu Mythological stories, among many things, the common factor we observe is, that the personalities central to the epics were generally of very young age when they came into prominence.
Lord Rama was quite young when his father considered it fit enough to pass on the batten of heading the kingdom to Lord Rama. Similarly Lord Krishna was also young and so was Yudhishthira. Pandu also became the king of Hastinapur, when he was quite young.
If we have a cursory glance on Ancient Indian History, we observe that ‘Ashoka the Great’, was only 36 years old when he became the king of Magadha Empire or Akhaṇḍa Bhārata. His grand father, the founder emperor of the Maurya Dynasty, the great Chandragupta Maurya ascended the throne, when he also was quite young.
Tenth Sikh guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh or Maratha Samrat Chhatrapati Shiva ji Maharaj, who fought valiantly against Mughal tyranny for oppressed and humanity, took up leadership roles while they were quite young.
In our freedom struggle, the youngsters were on the forefront to fight for our independence. They took lead with full zeal and enthusiasm. Who can forget Netaji Subhash Chander Bose or Shahid Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev or Chandershekhar Azad or Bismil to name a few. What was the age of each of them when they took such challenging lead roles and responsibilities?
Cricket icon Kapil Dev became a national hero by leading India to a never before dreamt or imagined World Cup win. He was hardly twenty five years of age then. Sachin Tendulkar was hardly a school going boy when he announced his arrival on International cricket arena with a bang.
Similarly Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal were only in their late twenties or early thirties when they brought Indian e-commerce platform Flipkart to challenge International e-commerce giant Amazon.
Take the case of film industry. In early 1970s Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor, the then teen sensations, were very young and raw when they stole the limelight from the veteran big stars of the time. Not only they have still sustained themselves till now, but also became leaders who pioneered a new trend thus opening the gates for so many youngsters to follow.
The common thread between all these personalities and great legends and revered Gurus, whom we worship, was they all were young.They were ready to take up challenges and very enthusiastic as well as willing to shoulder responsibilities. Their mentors had inculcated unparalleled resilience in them.
In the 1990s, Deng forced many of the conservative elders such as Chen Yun into retirement, allowing radical reforms to be carried out by bringing in relatively very young leadership to whom he played the role of a mentor. Because of the vision of the old guard for grooming of young leadership, where China stand today in all spheres is for every body to see.
Infosys founder Mr.Narayana Murthy was hardly thirty five years, when he founded this software giant. Not only he founded the company but he also brought with him six other co-founders and mentored them for future leadership. As a result these gentlemen also have proved to be excellent leaders in the corporate world in their own right.
Reliance Group Chairman Mr.Mukesh Ambani was hardly 45 years when he took over the reins of the group after his father Mr.Dhirubhai Ambani’s death. Again it is to be taken note of that Late Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani was a first generation entrepreneur with no business background and was hardly 45 years when he founded Reliance Industries.
Further, if we look elsewhere in the international arena, our attention goes to Apple and Microsoft. Late Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer Company in 1976, when he was hardly twenty one years of age. Bill Gate was in his twentieth year when he founded Microsoft in 1975. Similarly, Mark Zuckerberg was not even twenty years old when he founded Facebook in 2004. Such list of young entrepreneurs is endless.
For these young leaders, their mentors or guides or coaches, by whatever name we may address, were elderly or old guards but possessed vast experience. They knew very well, that they could only make plans, but, it is the youngsters only, who could execute such plans. The old guards were masters in their own right. They were innovators and path breakers, and took challenges to groom and mentor the new generation for future leadership.
The youngsters are willing to lead, enthusiastic, and ready to take challenges . They are bubbling with raw energy. They possess latest qualification and know-how but despite all information they lack wealth of experience and knowledge to execute seamlessly. It depends on their mentors to groom and guide the young leaders, with their rich experience of handling the situations, acquired over years of slogging and hard work.
If these mentors become handlers and brain wash the youngsters, these youngsters get radicalised and wreck havoc on the civil society by becoming terrorists. On the other hand if these mentors play their roles as guides by successfully invoking passions in these youngsters, help them in properly channelising their raw energy by giving them proper directions, then these youngsters become successful leaders in their respective fields.
Many of these young icons might have been lucky enough to have comfort of family background as a launch pad to opt for same profession and they went to the same vocations or family business, but ultimately if they could successfully survive, it was because they had the stuff to sustain, and willpower to prove themselves as leaders.
If any individual is not having capability to become a leader or is not capable to adapt and evolve, he is sure to crumble under the pressures of leadership. The mantle of leadership may be thrust on anyone, but for one to succeed, ultimately it depends on the one’s survival instinct and fighting spirit along with the willingness to learn, and the capability to accept challenges enthusiastically.
Public acceptance of such individuals is the ultimate litmus test. There are so many of such individuals, who, merely just because of family lineage got the positions, but in no time vanished from the scene because of cold response or rejection by the public. The success or acceptance of their predecessors in no way helped these individuals. There are ample examples if see around us.
But when so many examples of success stories of young leadership are there, then why the old guard is sceptical about handing over the reins of leadership to young generation. Why there is such a trust deficit, when we know youngsters have more time at hands to improve, adapt and learn from past experience. More the exposure and more the experience, that these youngsters gain, it only goes to their storage system, to be dug out in case of need, to handle more challenges in future in a better way.
Is the old guard afraid, that their authority and control will be wrested, and they will be sidelined, if the young generation starts taking more and more leadership roles. By just putting the blame on the youngsters that they are rakish or indolent, the old generation cannot absolve themselves of the failure of youngsters, because the old guard has equal responsibility to groom these youngsters in their earlier years or initial stages. If these youngsters are not good enough to deliver, it is a miserable failure on the part of the old guard as they failed in their responsibilities to invest in youngsters.
The old guard generally wants to put all the blame on youngsters by labelling them as irresponsible and uninterested to learn. Why this position has arrived at the first place itself? It is equally possible that the old guard failed to generate interests in the youngsters to become responsible or show interest in learning. May be the old guard did not evolve new techniques or adopt new technologies or use new tools, so as to generate enough interest and enthusiasm in the youngsters.
The question arises that how much interest the old guard itself has shown to learn and adopt new tools and technologies? You cannot teach a twenty first century youngster with obsolete twentieth century tools and technologies. When the old guard itself has not taken trouble or made efforts to improve their capabilities and shown lackadaisical attitude towards new developments, then they have no right to blame the youngsters. Believe me, if elders have no good opinion about the young brigade, the reverse is also equally true. The youngsters feel frustrated and lack any respect for the old guard.
We the old guard, one side take pride that we we were very obedient and respectful towards our elders, hardly raising any voice or questioned the wisdom or decisions of our elders. Despite growing up, we were totally dependent on our elders to take decisions for us. We took pride in claiming that our elders took decisions for us. But please pardon me if I would dare say that we were in fact shirking our responsibilities to own up our failures, and mistakes. In case of failures, we felt it convenient to say that it was not our decisions, we were merely the executors of the decisions made by our elders. In fact we wanted to play safe, take credits for success and putting blames on elders for our failures.
Many a times, when we were young or middle aged, many of us were found sulking at the arrangements, where we were afraid of our elders in the name of respecting them. Many of us were feeling throttled, because of lack of our freedom to decide for ourselves. Many of us during those moments would have vowed not to repeat such treatments with our children and ensure freedom to the youngsters for taking necessary calls for themselves for leading their lives.
We all know that learning is a continuous process, still we midway stop learning new things, new technologies and new ways of executing the jobs, entrapped in the web of misguided thinking that what we know, only that is correct or the best. Who knows our elders might have labelled us the same way as irresponsible and incapable when we were youngsters.
The time has long gone when questioning your parents or bosses was considered a sin, or challenge to the authority or disrespect. Today’s generation in the quest for information and knowledge asks questions. They want reasoning for the need for doing a particular job or in a particular fashion. The old guard cannot treat this as a disrespect by the youngsters because they question them. You cannot demand respect, but you will have to put efforts to command it by self educating, updating and upgrading skills, so that you can answer to the questions or address to the anxieties or apprehensions of youngsters.
What the old guard learnt or acquired qualifications when they were youngsters, is almost obsolete. Instead, the youngsters are equipped with latest and better informations on those subjects, because over the time new researchers have taken place and new concepts have been evolved. The old guard need to accept and adapt to the changes for and raising their bar, so that youngsters are ready to accept their advises or guidance and willingly ready to accept the old guard as their role models. For retaining the position of prominence, the old guard has to be giver and contributor, which can happen only if they strive to know the things more and better than the youngsters.
Now is the time to fulfil those vows, which the old guard made to themselves of not depriving their next generation from the facilities or rights, which they lacked or were denied by their elders. Handholding and mentoring youngsters or helping them in making their decisions or mid course corrections may always be felt as the need of the hour. But it should not be the excuse to stop them from becoming self dependent in any way. Let them fail or fall. Please be there to help, assist, guide or advise them if that is needed or required or requested by the youngsters. But stop running for them. It’s their race, let them decide how to run.

"Swami Ji then began to instruct him [Baba Jaimal Singh] into the theory and practice of Surat Shabd Yoga, and when the instructions were over, asking the youth of seventeen to sit down for meditation, he left the room.
"As soon as Jaimal Singh sat down for meditation, he got lost in samadhi. The night came and passed away, the day broke, but he continued motionless, lost in the inner bliss he had discovered. Another day saw itself swallowed by the night, and the night saw itself replaced by another day, and yet the youth sat lost to the world around him.
"When some forty-eight hours had thus gone by, Swami Ji asked some of the disciples if they knew where the visitor from the Punjab had disappeared. 'We saw him two days ago at the Satsang,' they said, 'but we have not seen him since.'
"Swami Ji smiled and proceeded straight to the little room where he had left his latest disciple and which none had entered for two days. He placed his hand on Jaimal Singh’s head, and when the latter’s soul returned to the normal physical consciousness and he opened his eyes, he saw his Guru beaming at him. For years, women have struggled to gain equality in all areas of life—from the home to the workplace, and especially in positions of leadership. Despite being 50.8 percent of the population, only 14.6 percent of executive officers in companies are women, and overall, women only earn 80 cents for every dollar men make. These discrepancies are even larger among women of color. Yet women of faith have historically played a pivotal role in challenging gender inequality, and they continue to defy stereotypes in politics, the workplace, and houses of worship. Here are five ways in which women of faith are fighting for gender equality at work and in broader society—empowering young women as feminist and womanist theologians, faith community leaders, social justice advocates, and elected officials.
1. Shaping and elevating feminist theology
Feminist and womanist theologians exist in every religion, actively engaging in efforts to achieve gender equality from a perspective of faith and making clear that women’s equality and faith are not inconsistent with one another. Challenging misunderstandings or misinterpretations of religious texts that have justified segregating society along gender lines, feminist theologians have surfaced the issue of gender inequality in religious communities. For example, Native American feminist Renya Ramirez wrote an article proposing that gender equality be part of any conversation about the oppression of Native American communities, and she challenges the gender-discriminatory practices that some indigenous nations have traditionally followed. Zainah Anwar also empowers women of faith as a founding member and director of the organization Sisters in Islam, which seeks to teach gender equality through an Islamic framework. In addition, the Sikh Feminist Research Institute exists to engage the Sikh community in feminist research to understand further the causes of gender-based oppression and how to combat it.
In the early 1970s, several Jewish feminists created the social justice group Ezrat Nashim in an effort to give men and women “equal access” to leadership roles within the Jewish community. María Pilar Aquino, a pioneer in the field of Latina feminist theology as a professor of religious studies, has authored more than 50 works on Latina rights, including Our Cry for Life: Feminist Theology from Latin America. Finally, bell hooks, a Buddhist Christian expert on womanism—a form of feminism centering on black women’s liberation—has written numerous essays and books analyzing the effects of racism, sexism, and spirituality on black women and feminist movements.
2. Holding leadership positions in faith communities
In 2012, only 11 percent of American congregations were led by women, and today, only 1 of the 100 largest churches in the United States is led by a woman, due in large part to institutionalized patriarchal models of leadership present in many houses of worship. More women of faith are redefining leadership in their houses of worship, providing important role models for young congregants and pushing to transform gender inequality from within their religious traditions. Bishop Vashti McKenzie was the first woman head of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, a role in which she encouraged and empowered women to grow professionally and attain leadership positions. Sally Jane Priesand was the first woman in the United States to be ordained as a rabbi and has worked in the Central Conference of American Rabbis’ Task Force on Women to help more women become ordained in the Reform Jewish movement.
Some of the largest and most historically significant churches today are led by women, such as Amy Butler, the first woman pastor of The Riverside Church. “Any time we can see women in roles of leadership doing good work … we’re changing people’s perception and chipping away at the patriarchy we all live with,” Butler says. She often uses her platform to speak out about women’s issues including abortion and sexual harassment. Rabi’a Keeble and M. Hasna Maznavi—founders of the first two female-run mosques in the country—have created their own communities of faith, where they saw a need for more gender-inclusive houses of worship. It is imperative that women continue to take the helm of faith-based organizations and communities, so that female congregants will feel more comfortable sharing their experiences as religious women.
3. Fighting against sexual harassment in religious communities
Over the past year, there have been numerous complaints of pervasive and persistent sexual harassment to which no industry has been immune, including faith communities. According to a recent survey, 81 percent of women and 43 percent of men experience sexual harassment at some point in their lives. Building on the #MeToo movement, which aims to destigmatize survivors of sexual violence, Hannah Paasch and Emily Joy created the #ChurchToo movement on Twitter. #ChurchToo gives victims a platform to share their stories of sexual abuse in religious spaces. Paasch states, “for those who felt themselves silenced and their experiences erased, this hashtag is meant to be a place where survivors are heard, believed, seen and surrounded,” as well as hold churches accountable for their actions. In response to this campaign, Belinda Bauman and Lisa Sharon Harper started the movement #SilenceIsNotSpiritual to urge evangelical congregations and leaders to elevate and show solidarity with the voices of those affected by sexual assault.
Popular evangelical leader Jen Hatmaker has openly taken a stand against leaders who have committed sexual assault, telling abusers, “You will not be covered by … your clergy robes … your powerful position … Let this filthy, evil system that protects abusers fall to shreds.” As more women of faith share their stories and create platforms for others to do the same, houses of worship will continue to take steps to reform their sexual harassment policies.
4. Serving in public offices from underrepresented religions
Elected officials that practice a religion other than Christianity are grossly underrepresented in local, state, and federal levels of government. For example, 91 percent of Congress identifies as Christian, while Jews make up only 6 percent, Buddhists make up 3 percent, Muslims make up 2 percent, and Hindus make up 3 percent. Today, the number of women running for elected office is increasing at an unprecedented rate, including women from underrepresented religions. Muslim women are filling legislative positions across the country and advocating for policies to help women in their faith community and beyond: Ilhan Omar (D-MN) made history in 2016 as the first Somali American legislator in the country when she was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives, where she successfully advocated for paid parental leave for city employees to increase support for working families.
At the federal level, Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) was the first Asian American woman and first Buddhist woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Earlier in her career, she founded the Patsy T. Mink Political Action Committee (PAC) with the goal of helping elect pro-choice women to Hawaii state offices. As an Obama administration appointee, Farah Pandith was the U.S. State Department’s first special representative to Muslim communities, where she led initiatives to help Muslim youth feel more accepted in society in an effort to reduce extremism. She also led the State Department’s Women in Public Service Project, a program to help women become the next academic, foreign policy, and advocacy leaders through learning institutes and mentorship.
5. Leading advocacy for immigrants and refugees
Since early 2017, the Trump administration has launched a slew of attacks on immigrants: removing protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants, including asylum seekers and long-term U.S. residents; detaining and deporting parents of U.S.-citizen children; and continuously targeting some of the most vulnerable people. In response to increased deportations, women of faith have called for immigrant justice in their local communities and beyond. Social justice activists such as Stosh Cotler— who helped organize a day of action for the Muslim and Jewish communities in solidarity with immigrants—were arrested at the U.S. Capitol while demanding renewed protection for Dreamers. Bishop Minerva Carcaño was not only the first Hispanic woman elected as a bishop to the United Methodist Church, but she has also long advocated for immigrant rights, even testifying before Congress.
Today, approximately 50 percent of refugees worldwide are women and girls seeking safety and economic opportunity in new countries. In their journeys toward refuge, they are often vulnerable to sex trafficking, in which 96 percent of victims are women and girls. Yet faith leaders such as Nadia Murad Basee Taha are fighting to ensure the safety and success of these affected communities. After escaping Islamic State captivity, Taha became a Yazidi human rights advocate and is now the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime Goodwill Ambassador for Human Trafficking. She has testified on the international stage to raise awareness for the disproportionate vulnerability young women face in areas of extreme violence and called on international organizations to help stop the violence against her community. In addition, poet and author Rafeef Ziadah uses her writing to advocate for human rights and women’s rights in areas of war, especially Palestine.
Conclusion
The historical contributions and leadership of women in religious communities are paramount. While the fight for women’s equality has persisted for years, there remains much room for progress. Women faith leaders are defying the limitations that society has historically placed on them in houses of worship, politics, activism, and society more broadly. Moving forward, women will continue to rise in all areas of public life, and in faith communities in particular, as an integral part of the rising tide of women’s leadership and the continuing fight for gender equality.
