havent seen this take in a while thankfully but it popped up in my head and i wanna post this anyways. i think everyone who talks about how siffrin “got off too easy” at the end of isat and his friends should have abandoned him should go read warrior cats if they want an example of a character using their trauma as their god-given jailbreak card to treat their family and peers (a good amount of whom who were completely innocent) like dogshit, and who faces zero consequences from the narrative for it (and in fact bends over to blame their peers). like read all the shit jayfeather does while the narrative sobs over how tragic but awesome and quirky he is and then look me in the eye and tell me siffrin’s ending was poorly written.
#or look at titania from reborn. what who said that#at least siffrin’s trauma is actually developed and taken deadly seriously by the narrative and clearly isnt being used to excuse his behav#behavior#siffrin does some shitty things in the story but theyre very obviously in a horrible state mentally and physically thats been breaking them#down little by little by little until theyve exploded and broken down. and his family still holds him accountable for what he did#but they stay with him anyways because they love and respect and care about him and are horrified to learn his situation#meanwhile ivypool goes through trauma yeah but shes not really written like a realistic trauma victim#and when she hurts her sister over and over and over and over and over again its always her sister who has to make it up at the end#and we all gotta sob and coo over ivy because shes the fan favoriteand if you criticize her then you hate trauma victims#(ignoring dovewing’s trauma from the situation as well i might add)#while ivy never gets to grow or acknowledge how her attitude is hurtful to herself and others#its just ‘’well dovewing had it better so she better shut the fuck up and deal with the constant emotional abuse ivy throws at her’’#imagine if isat ended with siffrin going ‘’actually im not sorry bc you all havent suffered as much as me’’#and the party didnt object to that at all and they were like ‘’yes we do have it better so youre justified in hurting us#and also you are the most tragic character ever so you cant face emotional consequences ever’’#(and before anyone goes ‘’well dovewing left the clan and ivypool feels bad about that’’ the story doesnt position it as a consequence of#her behavior to her sister. canonically shes leaving to be with her baby daddy and SHES framed as the one hurting her sister#and shes the one whos gotta mend that rift. while the narrative doesnt acknowledge that that situation was partly her sisters fault at all#)#ok sorry for wc on main jumpscare. i wouldve posted over on the blog but i dont think people over there have played isat#echoed voice#isat spoilers

I keep thinking of how I want to taxonomize Siffrin and Loop bc it feels significant to me that Loop and Siffrin both have inherently diverged from the same Traveler Mold they came from. But because I am like a 7 year old I keep sagely nodding to myself going "ah yes... just like mega mewtwo"
#do u understand me. do u understand my vision#they're both siffrins they are just two pathways of how the same one guy develops through their experiences in timeloops#that are the same in basic structure but different in how they affected them#so like siffrin and loop are distinct people. but they're also just branches of preloops siffrin. much like mega mewtwo x and y are distinc#but they are also mewtwo#<-(said like this is somehow profound and not stupid)#liek do you guys get me... i think loop and siffrin are very much in sync#to the point where as seen in canon it's pretty easy for loop to divine what siffrin's thinking down to the phrasing#it's really striking how much loop talks and siffrin fullass does not reply but loop keeps on rollin just fine#but fundamentally they don't think the exact same way when it comes to bigger things#like how loop never fully accepts the idea of talking to the king as something reasonable to do#or how act 4 siffrin is in their own damn world while loop is left going. Stardust what the hell are you on (morose edition)#i think it's fun to find the gaps between them#i've always thought it would be fun. in a postcanon timeskip scenario#for loop to be. flatly worse at reading siffrin than they expect to be. because siffrin has been healing and trying to get better#while loop has been becoming steadily bitter as they tried and failed to cut the rope on their own attachments as some kind of last measure#of self defense against the pain of paving over their old relationship with the party with a new name new role new personality new stardust#to exist alongsides#likewise i think it's fun if siffrin overextends his new understanding of loop as being another self and the feeling of recognition for loo#is simultaneously comforting and Tremendously grating coming from Fucking Stardust#especially if siffrin just assumes shit wrong cuz for as much as hes the only guy who can relate 2 being trapped in a timeloop for months i#was not exactly the same now was it.#isat spoilers#Sorry this is a lot of thinking outloud on a post where i call loop and siffrin mega mewtwo x and y

(Just a quick ramble with major ISAT spoilers)
You know those AUs where Loop winds up getting dragged along by Siffrin to join the party in the end? And you know those AUs where another character loops instead of Siffrin?
A thought that always fascinates me when it comes to AUs where another character is looping with canon Loop as their guide is what kind of relationship Loop would have with Siffrin, and vice versa. What would meeting Loop be like for Siffrin? Like, this is very different circumstances from canon. They don't have the loops in common, and if Loop wouldn't be hiding their identity when joining the party, then there's no time for Siffrin to warm up to their company before knowing the truth.
You're leading a semi-normal life, then all of a sudden one of your friends turns out to have been trapped in a time loop, and they go, "so I don't mean to alarm you, but I've grown very attached to a version of yourself that befell the worst possible fate that you yourself very narrowly avoided without even knowing it. You'll see yourself in their habits, but what they've gone through (what YOU could have gone through with one single mistake) has changed them. Anyway, say hi :)" How unsettling is that? What would either of them feel looking each other in the eyes for the first time, when Loop had likely never enjoyed looking at Siffrin during the loops? What would be their first time navigating a conversation, about anything at all? After a couple months, what of their dynamic then? I just wonder about it sometimes. What it's like to meet your best/worst case scenario self, not having gone through any of it together, and not having to depend on each other. There's no need to act all pleasant and lie because Loop's not here to help him, and Loop's presumably already in their tired healing stage with the party member who had looped, so they're already past their most bitter stage (not to say that they aren't bitter). Loop and Siffrin just kind of... exist within the same space is all. What's that like, I'm so intensely curious about it

I always romanticized in my head the idea of going back and restarting my life to fix all of my worst mistakes.
But recently when posed with the question. I thought about my friends and all the wonderful memories we have together. And how going through them a second time wouldn't be as wonderful. It would be a chore and I know I'd try to solve their problems with information and in ways I shouldn't be able to.
And while having this thought as I wandered aimlessly in the store I thought of Siffrin. And everything just suddenly clicked for me.
And that really made me realize. I'd rather live with my worst mistakes if it means I also get to keep my best memories.
So. Um. Thank you.
hell yeah anon... im really glad... it's really all about vulnerability isn't it? people don't want to feel vulnerable, and when you make mistakes, you tend to feel that way. but you can't get closer to other people if you don't let them in and show them you are a person who drops their coffee on your white pants sometimes

(As you watch Siffrin leave and go talk to everyone else, you stand up, and head towards Euphrasie.)
(...Maybe... maybe this time. It'll be different.)
(You're all family now, right? You all grew closer! You all love each other!)
(It'll all be fine. It'll be fine. It'll be fine!)
(He's here now.)
🌕: Traveling one! Are you done talking with your companions? Yes, wonderful, wonderful!
(...oh...)
🌕: I'd like to thank you for accompanying young Mirabelle this far. I'm very grateful.
(No, no, nonono...)
🌕: Siffrin, yes? If there's anything I can do to thank you, please don't hesitate to let me know!
(Why, why, why?? You did it all right this time, you did everything, you talked to them, you did it! It should be working!!!)
🌕: I know you will go back on your travels soon, but I do hope you'll keep in touch, if only for young Mirabelle...
(Please. Please, please, why can't something change, why is it always the same, WHY WON'T IT EVER CHANGE??)
🌕: But no matter what, know that Dormont will always be open to you! Please come back... any... time...
(You feel like you're going to pass out.)
(You're... you're such a failure! Failing to save them, failing to help her, even after all this time...)
(Tears run down your cheeks.)
(Here's Vaugarde's savior, everyone! Too busy crying her eyes out to do anything, as always!)
(Change, you're just so-)
🔷️: Siffrin? Mirabelle?
(You look at Odile. She's staring right at you.)
🔷️: ...Are you alright?
(You can't bring yourself to change your expression.)
🪨: Mira, what happened? Why are you crying?
🌕: I can't fix it on my own, not before it all ends... If only I had noticed sooner!!!
🍳: Frin?? Belle??? What's-
(Your head hurts so much)
🍳: URGH!!
🪨: W-what's happening!?
🍳: My head hurts!!
(...Siffrin.)
(They don't know, they don't know what's happening, you have to help--)
(You force yourself to move, pushing through the pain.)
🔷️: Mirabelle!?
(You reach out)
🍳: FRIN, BELLE!!!!
(...)
(You can finally see their face.)
(And, in a moment of perfect stillness...)
(You both know.)
(You open your mouth to ask, to plead, so say something, but-)
(You feel a tug on your stomach)

“shadowy figures appeared before you. apparitions, memories of what once was. reminders of who you’re fighting for. are they your true family, or merely wearing their visage?”
[twohats spoilers below the cut!]
DEATHCARDS!!! WOOO!! that leshy quote isn’t entirely set in stone yet, btw. i made these for a king boss fight i’m working on so realistically he’d be the one narrating? but eh. it’s fun to write in leshy’s voice. anyways, hopefully this won’t be too long?? i’ve got way less design notes this time around, but there’s also 6 cards here and i’m not very succinct. sorry in advance!!
siffrin
2 power - 2 health - 5 bones
loose tail - when a card bearing this sigil would be struck, a tail is created in its place and a card bearing this sigil moves to the right. a tail is defined as: 0 power, 2 health.
steel trap - when a card bearing this sigil perishes, the creature opposing it perishes as well. a pelt is created in your hand.
GOD it was hard to come up with sigils for this one. since these are boss exclusive cards, i had a pretty limited pool to work with… hopefully this is still fitting
loose tail is the closest i could get to a sigil that avoids death, since sigils like unkillable and many lives were off the table. plus, there’s kinda a connection with him not valuing his own life?? and sacrificing a part of himself? i think it works
steel trap!! this sigil is exclusive to the trapper boss fight! since summoned cards (like chimes and tails) inherit sigils, their tail card will also kill whatever’s in front of it when it’s destroyed! sort of a “taking you down with me” situation.
mirabelle
2 power - 5 health - 3 blood
swapper - after a card bearing this sigil is dealt damage, swap its power and health.
swapper!! this is an act 3 sigil exclusive to swapbot! ahhhhhhhh i had such a hard time trying to figure out another card design for her. i REALLY liked the bellist sigil for her and didn’t really have any other ideas. swapper felt like it fit with the change belief to me! and it also makes her a pretty terrifying card to go up against. since this is a boss card, that cost is basically entirely for show lol
ALT CARD ART!!! YIPEE!! literally all i did was flip her eyes to look angry lol. swapbot’s sprite changes when it swaps so i think hers would too!
isabeau
2 power - 4 health - 2 blood
dam builder - when a card bearing this sigil is played, a dam is created on each empty adjacent space. a dam is defined as: 0 power, 2 health.
fledgling - a card bearing this sigil will grow into a more powerful form after 1 turn on the board.
dam builder feels like a very defensive sigil to me, and it synergizes well with fledgling!! after a turn, isabeau will be doing 5 damage across 3 lanes! good god.
odile
1 power - 2 health - 2 blood
trifurcated strike - a card bearing this sigil will strike each opposing space to the left and right of the spaces across from it as well as the space in front of it.
sharp quills - once a card bearing this sigil is struck, the striker is then dealt a single damage point.
this was the HARDEST card to think up, and probably the weakest out of the bunch imo. i think i really nailed her regular card and i just. couldn’t come up with anything. agonies
i picked trifurcated strike as a reference to her being able to use all three craft types, and sharp quills… i think because of her aversion to touch? i think. it’s been a while since i made these aaaaa
bonnie
1 power - 1 health - 1 blood
waterborne - a card bearing this sigil submerges itself during its opponent's turn. while submerged, opposing creatures attack its owner directly.
leader - creatures adjacent to a card bearing this sigil gain 1 power.
if yall remember the notes on my kid card, this is based on the beta version of that card!! which means that for once i’m not putting bonnie through the torments. hooray!
waterborne is there because they always stay out of danger during battles! plus they’re from a coastal town so it fits on that front as well. i didn’t really think about the actual sigil names for cards this time around but hey! it’s a nice bonus!
the beta card had trinket bearer, but that’s a sigil that would only benefit the player in battle, so i swapped it out with leader! since they can’t be directly attacked, this basically makes them a permanent alpha on the king’s side of the field. also, leader, snack leader, it fits namewise as well!
loop
2 power - 1 health - 4 bones
haunter - when a creature bearing this sigil dies, it haunts the space it died in. creatures played in this space gain its old sigils.
bifurcated strike - A card bearing this sigil will strike each opposing space to the left and right of the space across from it.
“i’m normal about inscryption” i say as i give one of my cards a sigil that only appears in the completely missable rulebook of grimmora’s segment of the finale.
so. haunter! the aforementioned grimmora sigil! this appears on no cards ingame, but cmon. it fits. this sigil reminded me of how loop reacts when you guess that they’re a ghost! in battle, i imagine that siffrin will always get played right behind loop. because twohats
bifurcated strike was added here for the same reason it’s on their normal card! it feels like scissors craft!! i needed them to actually have A Sigil to transfer to siffrin and this felt the most fitting to me.
also, just like the normal cards, siffrin and loop are both the only ones to have a bone cost instead of blood cost! teehee :333
and i think that’s it! i’m not making inhabited versions of these cards because they aren’t meant to be accessible outside of the king fight! also! hi! i drafted this post and wrote siffrin’s segment: almost a month ago! oops!! i kept putting this off… at least it’s actually written out now lol. hope you guys enjoy!!!
#marshdoodles#isat#in stars and time#isat spoilers#inscryption#isatscryption#in stars and scrybes#FINALLY THESE CARDS ARE OUT#i made these a MONTH AGO. and i kept stalling aaaaaaa#i really like how the card art for these turned out#i did take the most liberties with the inscryption style tho. the actual ingame card art just isn’t something i can replicate i think#but whatever#it’s my au and i can take as many style liberties as i please

QoL as Kindness: ISAT's diagetic tutorials
This is the hopefully first of a series of posts I'll be doing reinterpreting ISAT's Loop through the lens of START AGAIN: a prologue's context. As such....
Major spoilers for both ISAT (all acts, including optional content) and SASASAP (all endings).
One of the biggest differences between ISAT and SASASAP is it’s QoL – it’s Quality of Life. QoL refers to all the little things that make a game just that little bit more playable; quick to navigate menus, quicksaving… tutorials.
It’s not really a surprise that SASASAP is as RPGmaker as RPGmaker gets. This isn’t a criticism, just an observation, and also a compliment to how much Adrienne’s skills with the engine improved between releases. Still, there’s some things that ISAT has over SASASAP.
ISAT’s QoL is absolutely essential to making it bearable. Anyone ever watch an ISAT playthrough where the player sighed in relief as the tutorial on picking where you loop came up?
SASASAP lacks a lot of ISAT’s QoL because it’s an earlier project without a studio backing it, but what impresses me is how this change ties into narrative.
Because the greatest chunk of ISAT’s greatest QoL is provided by Loop.
Even before you ever meet them, they’re already over your shoulder. Loop is the tutorial, speaking to you inside your brain. It’s genius, in that no player is ever going to question this. Hell, SASASAP’s movement tutorial is the exact same thing with less flavoring
This reframes what the QoL is – it’s not just a convenience to the player, it’s a convenience to Siffrin, too. It’s diegetic. It’s not something the game is giving you, it’s something Loop is giving you. Let’s look at what Loop gives you, and more importantly, why.
Zone Out
The first of the QoL features I want to talk about is the Zone Out function, the absolute bread and butter of not making this game a total slog.
The Zone Out feature as is did not exist in SASASAP (because Adrienne didn’t know how to do it yet) – instead, some doubled scenes let you just skip them entirely outright. There’s only two extremes: listen to all of it again, or none of it.
ISAT’s zone out system is much more dynamic, since it fast forwards dialogue line by line, letting you zone in whenever you’d like, and forcing you to zone in whenever a) something notably new happens, or b) whenever Siffrin speaks.
The way this feature is introced by Loop is kind of genius. Because Loop’s tutorial is about one thing – it’s okay to skip.
“You might miss what your party is saying, but who cares, right? If you make them mad, you can always loop back and they'll have forgotten all about it!”
It’s a cruel joke, or at least it seems that way on the surface. It’s also genuine advice. And a cruel joke at the same time. For Siffrin, freshly starting the loops, this is scandalous, but for Loop, who’s long since desensitized, it’s the same old same old.
What Loop’s doing here, by joking about Siffrin not listening to the party, is alliviate Siffrin’s guilt when they inevitably take Loop up on the offer. Because, even though Loop loves their party members…
From SASASAP, when sitting outside the bathroom:
(Will you get farther this time?) (Will you live this time?) (Or are you stuck listening to the same lines forever?) (…) (Stars, you’re so tired.)
Loop knows intimately well that Siffrin is going to drive themself insane trying to be a people pleaser every single loop, so this joke is telling the outright – don’t bother.
At first, Siffrin (and the player) still might. I really enjoyed reading the same conversations five times minimum because they’re fun and I’m deranged, but at some point I did start skipping them. And it was a relief to know there wouldn’t be anything new.
Siffrin: “Should I check everything again?” Loop: “You mean, should you check the same barrels, the same closets, the same objects on tables every loop?” Loop: “I mean, you can, but… You know things won’t change, right?” Loop: “If you really want to get a certain item again, or listen to your friends repeat something funny, you should!” Loop: “I personally would only check two or three things every loop, and ignore the rest.” Loop: “It will just make you crazy to expect something to change, when nothing will.” Loop: “All that might change is your reaction to it!”
The game is telling you, Loop is telling Siffrin, don’t drive yourself insane playing, please. The characters aren’t going to remember if you skipped something.
In the course of my script wizard activities, I’ve gotten an in-depth view of just how much that actually holds up. Pretty much all major differences are by Act, unrelated of how often you’ve done something. Minor variations apply for other things, but… those variations are minor.
And this also points out what all those variations are. Siffrin’s reactions!
Loop’s pre-empting Siffrin’s guilt, cuz they probably felt it themself. Hell, we do know they felt the pressure to perform and make sure nobody notices anything’s wrong, in SASASAP! Right up until the finale, Loop was driving themself up the wall.
(You have to act, you can't crack, you have to fake it and play it exactly as you did the first time for the whole way through so your friends don't find out anything is wrong) (You don't want to know what would happen if they knew their quest was in vain) (If they knew their quest for justice and change always ends in stillness and death!)
Acting everything out perfectly is one of the ending paths for SASASAP, which results in… complete and utter failure. Obviously.
(You acted perfectly normally, didn't you?) (Nothing out of place, nothing weird, every line the same as it might've been the first time?) (Ah…That was your mistake, wasn't it…?) (Because… Didn't your very first time… end exactly like this?) (The King throws the Housemaiden's body onto the floor again.)
Zoning out for too many conversations actually awards weird points in SASASAP, locking you out of the Perfect Ending. On the other hand, acting “perfectly” in ISAT… has no awards whatsoever. No special scene or or optional event or anything at all. You get nothing for paying attention!!!
So spare yourself the pain already, m’kay?
(On that note: I don’t think Loop not being sarcastic about it would’ve like… worked. At the start of ACT 2, Siffrin isn’t going to believe Loop when they say “Stop forcing yourself to relive the same thing over and over because you’ll start seeing your friends as disposable actors and lose touch with reality.” That all comes later, when Siffrin can look back on Loop’s words and see how right they were.)
Loop Back
The second biggest sigh of relief in any given ISAT playthrough is probably this specific tutorial.
Loop graciously shows you that you don’t need to loop back all the way to the beginning every single time. You can pick and choose where to go, even going forward by paying up with Memories of Skirmish.
This is a feature SASASAP does not possess, for the reason that it is much, much shorter, only covering about as much as one floor of ISAT’s three floor House.
But… since this is a character showing this to you, Loop showing this to you, we can ask… when did Loop learn this? After all, START AGAIN, Loop’s loops, do not have this feature.
“It'll save you time, so it's important, so listen up!”
This feature not existing in SASASAP means this is a thing that Loop did not know exists during their own time as Siffrin.
And that’s just the thing, isn’t it? SASASAP’s Siffrin does not know how to do this. They cannot pick and choose where they end up, as demonstrated wonderfully by SASASAP’s True Ending. There’s an even more wonderful implication, though –
On SASASAP’s Perfect End path, when exiting the final room before the King, Isabeau says this:
Isabeau: “…I'm glad you're feeling better, though!” Siffrin: (…?) “What do you mean…?” Isabeau: “Oh!!! Um, you were…” Isabeau: “Well! You were acting a little weird when we were way closer to the Castle's entrance……” Isabeau: “You weren't really listening to us, you were kinda smiling the way you do when you're actually not happy…” Isabeau: “…and you like, almost acted like you knew exactly where you were going?” Isabeau: “But clearly you're feeling better now! You're acting just like normal!!!”
SASASAP’s Siffrin knew how to do this, somehow managed to lock themself into the House’s last floor… and then forgot how to get back. By making this tutorial, Loop is ensuring that Siffrin never will.
“What can I do next?” – SASASAP’s greatest flaw
So, if you’ve had the pleasure of playing START AGAIN START AGAIN START AGAIN: a prologue yourself (as you should), then you’ve probably faced this scenario, or some variation of it:
I got to the end, I died to the King, but… what do I do next? The game tells me to go for the extremes, but how do I do that?
(edit: apparently some of yall just managed to speedrun sasasap in two loops. You're gonna need to stay with me here, please. Suspend your disbelief a bit, because a lot of people [including me] were dumbasses about it)
Maybe you try another loop, but just get the same ending again (or a differnet one, depending on a coinflip). You’re getting frustrated. Getting the Perfect Ending demands pinpoint precision to avoid everything weird, the True Ending demands good memorization of every single damn key in the game, and the order you do everything in. (Though, to be fair, the requirements on that one are actually more merciful than one might expect.)
Point is, in SASASAP, it’s incredibly easy to get stuck in that endless loop of “What the fuck do I do now?” It’s not uncommon to think you got it right only to get the same result anyways. What does one do in this situation?
They consult a guide, obviously.
START AGAIN’s ending requirements are frustrating. They are. When I tried to go for either the Perfect or the True Ending, I saved inside every single room, just so I could get right back to it when I inevitably fucked up five times minimum. This is both criticism… and praise. Because Loop is the major reason that ISAT does not suffer from this same problem.
Whenever you’re stuck in ISAT, Loop is just a single loop or call away at any times. And besides that, no plot requirement in ISAT demands nearly as many moving pieces all at once as SASASAP does – the “Sus Route” has been relegated to an optional ACT 4 exclusive event, instead of the game’s True Ending.
Instead of consulting an external guide on how to progress, you have one right there in the game, always ready with the next tip. They’re not infallible, mind you – enough time in Isatcord’s #game-help proves that, but Loop solved all of the moments I got stuck and frustrated in ISAT for me.
(Primarily that one time you need to figure out that a photo is similar to being stuck in time. That moment in particular is actually commendable, as you need to ask Loop about it twice before they tell you, leaving you a last shot to try and figure it out on your own.) Loop is a feature that nullifies SASASAP’s greatest flaw in its successor, and they choose to do so.
Memory of Keys
In my humble opinion, Loop does this because… they do not want Siffrin to suffer as they did. They want Siffrin to escape. And there is no greater example of their kindness than how Loop treats keys.
First of all, all keys in the game have a sparkling effect on them if you’ve picked them up at least once before, making it immediately clear where in the room they are. This means you don’t need to search every single room top to bottom for them, as you had to do for any keys and Star Crests in SASASAP. It’s some nice QoL that just means you don’t have to re-search the same area if you happened to forget which specific cupboard the key was in.
Key point being: SASASAP did not have this feature. In SASASAP, you did have to memorize where all the keys are, and doing so is expected if you want the True Ending.
Loop does not want Siffrin to have to do this. Because…
From SASASAP’s True End:
(The torch in the infirmary? That’s important!) (The key in the book? Soooo important.) (The names of your friends, that have been by your side throughout this entire adventure?) (Not worth remembering.)
Compared to ISAT’s ACT 2:
Siffrin: “How come I can see where the keys are?” Loop: “Whaaaaat? You caaaaaan? How can that beeeeeee?” Siffrin: “Is it thanks to you?” Loop: “Maybe.” Loop: “I figured you'd have other things to worry about than where a stupid key is.” Loop: “No need to thank me.”
To Loop, that they memorized the House’s layout over their friends’ names is a defining moment to their own failures. After all, in all likelihood, the True End of SASASAP is the last loop before they called it quits. It’s a traumatic experience from them, one that came from having to remember all the dumb fucking keys.
They do not want Siffrin to experience this. They do not want Siffrin to have to memorize the House, to push away what actually matters in favor of efficiency. So Loop is directly, personally, giving them a boon, so that Siffrin does not have to.
Conclusion
There’s probably more tutorial things I could talk about, but I feel like you’re seeing the pattern now, even if I don’t bring up saving level ups or keeping equipment or the “You’re stuck” signifier, least of all cuz they don’t have direct points of comparison with SASASAP like my other examples do (SASASAP has no changeable equipment, and saving levels doesn’t matter if you only have one floor, and you can’t softlock either.). So.
Loop’s tutorials all belie a fundamental kindness to their character. Everything that made their own experience trapped in the timeloop just that bit worse, they’re choosing to do away with it for Siffrin. They are choosing to make Siffrin’s time here easier.
Zoning out too much lead to them never paying attention to their friends, forgetting their names, so they make sure that Siffrin can still zone back in whenever something new happens.
Loop trapped themself for years on the final floor, locking themself out of progress that might lie further back, so they’re ensuring Siffrin knows exactly how to loop forwards and backwards so it doesn’t happen again.
Loop lets Siffrin keep equipment across loops to cut down on time spent doing the exact same thing over and over.
They are saving Siffrin time, and they are giving Siffrin comfort. At every single turn, Loop is saving Siffrin from the same pitfalls they fell into without anyone to guide them out.
It's honestly incredible to transform an increase in skill into an actual narrative element. Yes, SASASAP sucks more to play. But ISAT sucks less, because Loop wants it to. It's the perfect marriage of real world circumstance and storytelling. I could... probably pull another comparison here, saying it's like a game and its remake - overhauled graphics, expanded story, and loads and loads of QoL, because the makers of the remake realized something. They love the original, but parts of it do suck, and there's so much that can be done to make a new player's experience smoother. Metanarrative commentary,,,, woah,,,,,
Every single one of these QoL elements I’ve mentioned function as a crutch for a player’s failing memory, but also Siffrin’s (similar to what I talked about in my previous essay on ISAT’s ludonarrative - the player and Siffrin are always in sync, even in how tutorials benefit them). Loop doesn’t know the player exists though (only the Change God does), so they do everything for Siffrin.
To keep Siffrin from forgetting. To help Siffrin focus on what’s important. To make Siffrin’s journey just a little bit less miserable. Loop directly improves ISAT’s QoL. For you. For Siffrin.
From Loop’s introduction:
Loop: “See, I’m useful! I’m very useful! That’s why I’m here, helpful Loop.” Siffrin: “Why are you helping me?” Loop: “…” Loop: “Because I think you should be helped.” Loop: “I won’t always have the answers, but… I think having someone on your side to talk to is better than dealing with this alone.” Loop: “Right?”
From Loop’s hangout:
“But it’s fine.” “Whether you believe me or not, I’m here to help you.” “So you can escape this loop.”
And finally, from the start of ACT 3:
Siffrin: “Are you really here to help me?” Loop: “Stardust…” Loop: “…” Loop: “Yes.” Loop: “If you can believe anything, believe that.” Loop: “I asked to be here, so I could help you.”
And I do believe them. Loop’s feelings on Siffrin are… complex, to say the least. They love Siffrin, and they hate him in equal measure. They’re jealous, and spiteful, but underneath everything…
In SASASAP, if you die to a Sadness thrice, you get this monologue:
(Sometimes, when you loop back here…) (In the corner of your eye, you can sometimes see someone that looks just like you.) (Is it a you from another loop? Remnants of your past failures?) (Are you going crazy?) (May they succeed where you cannot.)

okay this isnt gonna be a coherent post please forgive me but i want to. talk about isabeau and the mask that he wears because it hits me SO hard in the chest.
all of it, the fact that he doesnt confess, the fact that he plays an idiot, the way he tries to come off as bold and brave? its all an act! siffrin, when going through his friendquest enough times, literally goes "you aren't the only actor in this play". its all a facade! its all fake! or, well, its not all fake, but its all stuff he kind of puts on. some of it is fake it till you make it, of course! some of it... isnt.
because thats another thing siffrin is right about! isabeau is a coward. isabeau is a coward who wants so desperately to be liked that he pretends he isnt one. hell throw himself into the line of fire when the people he cares about are at risk, sure, but when it comes to himself? he keeps himself sealed up under lock and key. he wont confess to siffrin because hes scared of letting the feelings out there, he tells mira that hes 'too stupid' to worry, he lets odile tell him that they dont count on him to know things. because hes worried that if people know who he actually is, with all the dumb buff and goofy exterior, they'll hate him.
"doesnt that feel like someone you wouldnt feel ashamed of knowing?" he says that to siffrin, someone he has a romantic interest in. thats something he genuinely believes someone he respects could think about him. isabeau likes himself better than he used to, sure, but he clearly isnt as comfortable with himself as hell lead you to believe. i also think it shows in how he reacts to siffrins outburst in act five!!! he outright says that its all true! even if it was mean, if it hurt, it was also accurate to him as a person. isa is comfortable with himself, he likes himself, but he doesnt... love himself. and its hard to believe that other people love you when you feel that way. even if, like isa, you know rationally that they do.
hes smart and stamps out that intelligence, hes emotionally intelligent in all matters but his own. his heart is so big to compensate for how small he used to feel. and sometimes he still feels that small. but he can always change, cant he? he can always move forward.

Hmmm just gonna spit this headcanon out in text post form since A. I don't think I could exposit it well enough in image form and B. It's not actually textually/thematically substantiated and I don't like actually staking my stuff on just vibes alone*
But anyway. I'd say it's pretty evident that all the islanders forgot their names, right? King obviously. Because why the hell else would he do that, but also Siffrin No Middle Names No Last Name.
They're 'pretty sure' they've 'always' been 'Just Siffrin' 'as long as they can remember'. It's a pretty cruel twist of the knife to say that they don't even get to keep their birth name as a memento, which is why I'm saying as such.
My utterly unsubstantiated claim is I think it'd be cute to say that Sisyphus *is* the name Siffrin initially picked, assuming the myth of King Sisyphus is recontextualised as idk, just a play or something in the setting. But I like the idea of Siffrin going 'oh shit 🫵 he's just like me fr' at a tortured fictional character long before the irony kicks in.
As for how Sisyphus -> Siffrin. I think that chronic mumbler and emotional doormat Sif just did not correct people who misheard the name during their time travelling, and went through enough places with incompatible phonologies (pronounceable sounds in the language) without ever really writing it down that it just got kinda. Changed until it was unrecognisable, and Siffrin just went with it until the earlier pronunciations slipped out of their swiss-cheese brain. And they just kinda don't remember any of that.
Also, something something the horrid realisation that Siffrin also named themselves after a King. Just not as blatantly.
*(though I think there's something here about Siffrin, a guy from a belief system that seems to thoroughly disincentivise autonomy and self-motivated choice continuously having their hand forced to make changes/choices they don't want but have no choice but to... It's not solid enough to really back this up tbh, but it informs it.)
Anyway.
#theres also something one of my french-speaker friends said about siffrin's official pronounciation being the feminine way to pronounce -in?#which i dont know enough about to really corroborate and theyre busyyyy and havent started the game yet so i cant really ask#im sure someone else has already voiced this easy-to-come-up-with headcanon anyway but just in case nobody has i decided to post it#isat#isat spoilers#in stars and time#isat siffrin#isat loop#i also personally picture sif (and loop especially) being more hostile to the concept of changing themselves after The Encounter#both of them being big grudge-holders and that 'want' to control your own destiny being clearly against how they interpret the universe#as for whether they should be so hostile? probably not! but they appear to be anxious in fear of some kind of divine retribution should#they like. ever even dare to Want. and uh. well. that certainly went well for Loop. not sure they'd be gung-ho to do it again#so Loop being able to go 'oh well it wasn't my REAL name' as a salve for having to make a new identity AGAIN....#while sif is explicitly clinging to it as an anchor for Who They Are If Nothing Else.. they can upset each other and also mirabelle i think#lucabytetalks

in the au, does the siffrin dialog where he forgets what he’s saying happen every loop? Like in the letter about running away. And as the party progresses through the loops, does the party notices the aura of weirdness about siffrin? Like why does the king call out specifically to them every time. What is siffrin supposed to remember?
The dialogue where Sif forgets what he was talking about happens every loop. His attitude changes depending on what question is asked or what tone is used (the party likes to change things up, they don't 'remember their lines word by word' like siffrin was obcessed with) but whenever they probe him to talk about something that will lead to his run away, he always forgets what he was saying. Always.
Odile is the most interested in his 'weird memory loss'
The king's "do you remember?" dialogue and his clear focus on Sif is THE THING that spirals into the party eventually learning about the forgotten land and wishcraft.
...but it takes entering ACT 3 for any relevant King dialogue to be available, and it is still a slow process cause Mirabelle is the NO.1 KING HATER and all the party hate him too, so they don't even let the king speak in most loops just see him go "NO TALKING LET'S FIGHT! I'LL GIVE YOU A REAL REASON TO CRY" or "STOP BOTHERING SIFFRIN!" and the fight start.
They never have a Sif moment of [You can understand the King's feelings more than you would have wanted] Even when they learn about his forgotten home and feel some sympathy, it isn't enough, till the very end the party don't vibe with the king at all, less and less each loop even.

The voices that be would like to know what everyone's SOUL types are (if they have them / it does not mess with lore)! ...Wait, can you guys even tell without color...?
Now now Chara, that's not really nice of you to say that, it's not his fault if he don't even remember who he is
_____________________
Here's the souls of our dear party members ! Mh ? Oh, you're mad that you can't know what their soul types are ? Well, you can actually guess, Siffrin and Chara gave you some hints in all of them, and the shades I took come directly from screenshots of the game with saturation off.
Here you can see a bit more of Siffrin and Chara's dynamic, Siffrin just have a very annoyingly mean voice in their head, greeeaaat. It's kinda like Loop and Siffrin's dynamic, but without the connection (Twohats and all) and...with a lot of little changes as well actually. Don't worry, you'll learn all of them soon enough
Oh, also, english's not my first language, so I tried to make some wordplays here but I'm not sure if it works well, hope it does
I'm looking at my notes of what I planned next, and if everything goes well, the next answers will be very very important for the rest, some really important infos you see, about what is going on. So stay tuned and see you later !

DIALOGUES IN CASE YOU CAN'T READ MY HANDWRITING
1 :
Isabeau : Soul types ?
Mirabelle : Colors ?
Siffrin : Lore ?
Bonnie : Whaa ?
2 :
Odile : They probably mean our soul shades
Everyone : oooooooh
3 :
Isabeau : Well, for me, my soul has a light shade. Looks pretty cool right ?
Siffrin (internally) : Always by your side, waiting for the right moment
4 :
Mirabelle : Oh, mine has a darker shade to it... That's a shame, I wished I had one more like Isa's
Siffrin (internally) : Even after all the bad puns and pranks you threw at her, she still treats with care
5 :
Bonnie : You can talk ! Mine looks super lame and light ! What the crab ! Looks too much like Isa's. Urgh !
Siffrin : The kind of person who rushes firsts first through all obstacles
6 :
Bonnie : 'Dile one looks super cool and lightless though ! Dark and mysterious just like her !
Odile : Indeed, I suppose I'm just that cool
Siffrin (internally) : Through space and time, she'll always keep trying to see right through you
7 :
Siffrin : Guess it's my turn huh ? Let's not keep you in the dark. My jokes can be as lightless as my soul, but I try to stay light-hearted
Isabeau : HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Bonnie : 'frin !! NO !
Siffrin : Oh come on Bonnie...Lighten up
Bonnie : AAAAAH
8 :
Chara (internally) : Through your travels, your journeys, your losses, your friendships and your wishes, try as you might, but you continue to BE YOURSELF
9 :
Chara (internally) : HA ! Now that's funny ! "Being yourself" ? Are you even someone at all ? Are you someone worth being ? Imagine being so dissociated with yourself, to the point that your inner thoughts are in the 2nd person, and have THAT soul ! The irony ! Oh, if you could see me right now partner, I'm dying of laughter !

thinking about isat. I feel like this game talks about relationships in a way that is so refreshingly honest.
There’s something so not quite perfect about the resolutions and conclusions. I can’t think of as many examples to point to off the top of my head but, the specific moment that comes to mind is Siffrin and Bonnie’s talk about Siffrin’s physical boundaries. How they work through it but Bonnie still doesn’t exactly get it, because it’s a very complex situation, because they’re young. And Siffrin still has some feelings about how Bonnie approaches them, because they’re very headstrong and quick to act even when they’re earnestly trying. But they’re trying, and they’re making progress, and that’s the important part that comes out of it.
I think that’s really what makes isat’s conclusions to some of its character vs character(s) conflicts hit for me in a way some others don’t. The resolution doesnt mean that things are immediately improved, necessarily. But there is a promise in the actions and conversations. There’s an implication that these things being addressed are things that the characters are going to keep working on even as the game comes to an end.
Even Isabeau and Siffrin finally getting their confession, although not necessarily having the same tone as Siffrin working on his boundaries or communication, is still a “let me think about it.” It’s still not giving you a solid answer. There’s no capstone that says exactly where they stand now. Relationships are and will always be malleable. Although stories have a set beginning and a set ending, real people, their relationships, their conflicts, will forever be in flux.
something along the lines of, just because isat is a narrative with a beginning and end, it doesn’t mean the relationships and their conflicts and progress are as set in stone as the ending of a story. You will, ideally, always be communicating with people. You will, less ideally, continue to have conflict, and times you feel like a conversation could have gone better, and the thought that you’ll probably have to come back to the topic again sometime. And isat delivers its relationship storylines in a way that acknowledges that, I think.
#In stars and time#I’m getting very excitable about the complexities of relationships tonight.#I can’t tell if this makes sense but I hope at least a sliver of my point is visible in here somewhere.#Text posts :0]#isat spoilers

( ISAT OPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SPOILERS) I finally get to post the writing I made for @sharkylass Isa looping au “In Repetition and Change” which is very cool and everyone should check it out! I wanted to try and make my own take on what the interactions for a memory of puns achievement would look like ^_^. Writing is under the cut:
[ You’re back here again. ]
[ Sif should be arriving right around…]
<| “Isa!!!”|>
[ …Now.]
[ Sif comes along to greet you at the start of every loop. ]
[ He makes a pun about the favor tree and the two of you banter- making each other laugh. ]
[ Every time afterwards, you think of reaching out to him… but you usually tend to chicken out before doing anything. ]
[ It’s cowardly behavior sure, but you’d rather play it safe than ruin anything.]
[ It’s a routine that has never deviated, at least not in any way that was notable to you. ]
<| “..Isa? Are you okay?”|>
[…?]
[ “Oh uh..sorry Sif! Didn’t mean to zone out like that!”]
[ Okay genius, think of something!! He’s getting worried about you!!]
[“..I was just lost in thought thinking about the Favor Tree! Isn’t it cool?”]
[ You make sure to smile. You hope that’s enough.]
<| Sif smiles back at you. |>
<| “..Yeah it is..!”|>
[ Siffrin has the look that they’d only make right before making a pun.]
<| “One could say it's a pretty..."|>
[ You get ready for it.]
[“Uh-huh?”]
<|"...TREE-mendous tree."|>
[ You do your best to laugh convincingly and focus on the information you’ve heard dozens of times before. ]
[“Right right, sleepover at the clock tower. Sounds like a ton of fun!”]
[ It’s not like you’d go anywhere else. ]
=> [ Do you need anything from me?]
=> [ Stop talking. ]
=> [ Stop talking. ]
[ You don’t really feel like talking anymore and you can’t think of anything new to say. ]
[ Sif looks at you and frowns a little. ]
<| “…?”|>
<| “..Alright that’s it..my turn!”|>
[…]
<| “…okay a good joke.. what’s a good joke to make-“|>
[ Did he not realize that you could hear them muttering? ]
[ You’ve done this a couple of times already but you find yourself still repeating your usual lines. ]
[ “..Huh? What for?”]
[ You tilt your head and do your best to act confused and unassuming. ]
[ It’s what you’re best at. ]
[ You already know the answer as to why Sif is doing all of this for you. ]
[ They told you a few loops ago.]
[ Sif did all of this to make you happy.. because the two of you are friends. ]
[ It’s awfully sweet of them isn’t it? ]
[ You really don’t deserve that kindness at all… but you keep those thoughts to yourself because you’re smart. ]
[ Besides it’s nice to hear it again even if you’ve heard it all before. ]
[It’s reassuring to hear someone say they care about you. ]
[ So you will sit here and listen through the same batch of jokes, like you always have. ]
<| “…!!!! Oh- well because you seemed sad. So I wanted to make you laugh! It might help you feel better.”|>
<|…?|>
[Sif looks around and their gaze focuses on the Clocktower in the distance. ]
<| “Ooh, I know! Why did the clock get kicked out of the library?”|>
[“.. I don’t know, why?”]
<| “Because It tocked too much!”|>
[…]
<| “..Oh so you must’ve heard that one already then huh?”|>
[…?!]
[ You forgot to laugh. ]
[ Sif waves his hands and laughs awkwardly. ]
<| “.. It’s okay! I have way more puns at my disposal, so I’ll just find a new one.”|>
[ While Sif is thinking of a new joke to make, you remind yourself to actually respond this time. ]
<| “How do clocks greet each other?”|>
<| “They say h-“|>
[“Hour you doing?”]
<|…!|>
[ Sif falters at your response for a second before recovering. ]
[He laughs awkwardly. ]
<| “..You knew that one too.. I must’ve told you earlier and forgot.. haha..”|>
<| “…Stars, I’m really off my game today arent I?”|>
[ When has acting like a know it all ever helped you? Why did you say that? ]
[ He clearly just wants to help you and all you ended up doing is making him upset instead! ]
[ No, you need to calm down. You can still salvage this. ]
[ Let’s try this again. ]
[ “Oh crab- I didn’t mean to take your joke, Sif!”]
[“If you have any more you’d like to share then I’d be happy to hear it, okay?”]
<| “..! Oh okay? If you say so, Isa.”|>
[ Siffrin nods and scrunches up their face. ]
[ It’s clear they’re trying extremely hard to think of a pun you haven’t already heard from them yet. ]
[ Siffrin mumbled to themselves again. This time it’s barely audible. ]
<| “..Please be funny please be funny please be funny...”|>
[…?]
<| “..! Okay I think I got it..”|>
<| “A fashion designer made a belt with clocks printed on it for a time traveller…”|>
[…? Oh, that’s a new one! ]
[ Sif noticed your brief look of surprise and smiles. ]
<| “Do you know what they called it, Isa?”|>
[ You shake your head no in response to the question and let Siffrin answer. ]
[“No, I don’t. What did they call it, Sif?”]
<| “A waist of time!”|>
[…?!]
[ Heh.]
[Ha..AHAHHAHAHAHAHA]
[ You laugh and laugh and laugh. You can’t seem to stop. ]
<| “Yes! I knew I still got it-“|>
[ The joke wasn’t even that funny but you feel tears start to prick at your eyes ]
<| “..?! Isa??”|>
[ Can’t you see that the joke is over now? ]
[ He’s going to think you’re being weird!!!]
[ You struggle at it, but you somehow manage to force yourself to take a deep breath in and out. ]
[ You smile and give a shaky thumbs up to Sif. ]
[ He hesitantly smiles at you back.]
[ “..Thank you Sif, I really needed that.”]
<| “..? Are you..”|>
[ Sif looked like they wanted to say something else but stopped himself. ]
<| “..Nevermind. I’m glad I could help cheer you up for a bit, Isa.”|>
<| “I’m going to go to the clocktower now!”|>
<| “Let me know if you need anything from me, okay?”|>
[ Siffrin waves goodbye and runs off. You watch him go.]
[[ You got a MEMORY OF PUNS. ]]
[ You will always remember this.]
