Summary:: it was the day Max arrived at Daniel's house

It was like any other day, nothing weird happened at first. Early in the morning, he had woken Geri up for his breakfast. She had given him the tuna one, and it was okay-ish food.

Daniel had climbed on the kitchen counter and watched the family eat in silence. Nothing new. And then Christian went to work and the kids went to school. And then Geri had gone out for– he didn't know, for more food maybe.

And then she came back in the afternoon, while Daniel was napping beside the window, with a big white box that smelled funny.

“Danny!” She called for him.

With a big stretch and a yawn, Daniel stood up and ran to greet her in the living room.

“There you are, baby. Did you have a nice day?” She cooed while petting his back. 

He meowed at her. He did have a nice day. He had his toys, a belly full of food, and a nice spot to nap and watch the bird outside. And a quiet house without the screaming kids? He got everything he needed.

He sniffed her palm and almost gagged. Where had she been? She smelled like other cats, MULTIPLE other cats. He stepped away and licked at his back fur to remove those smells from his body.

She put the box down in front of him and Daniel took a step closer. He sniffed at it a couple of times before meowing at Geri. Wondering what it is.

The box had holes in it. And it smelled weird, like a thousand scents stuck in it. And something was moving inside of it.

Crakk crakk

It sounded like claws.

It couldn't be.

How could she do this?

He couldn't help himself. He hissed at the box and the woman in front of him.

“Hey, it's okay. It's okay, baby.” She picked him up.

He squirmed until she put him down again.

“Danny, it's okay. It is just a small friend for you. So you won't get lonely. You will love him.”

No, he wouldn't love him. He didn't even want a friend. What is wrong with Geri? He felt hurt by this betrayal. He jumped on top of the coffee table. He needed some space from this traitor.

Geri sat on the floor and opened that box. The scent hit him first before the new cat jumped out of the box.

It was a young cat, not a kitten but not a grown-up cat either. A teenager maybe. He had spots on his fur. The new cat was full of spots where Daniel had none.

Did she want cat with spots? He couldn't grow spots.

Dang.

The new cat sniffed around and skittishly looked at his new surroundings before Geri picked him into her arms.

“This is Max. Your new brother.”

Brother? Daniel hissed.

“No? Okay then. A new friend, maybe?”

Daniel hissed again. Baring his fangs to Geri and the cat on her lap who was watching him with his unblinking eyes.

“Don't be mean, Danny. Max is a sweet boy. You will love him.”

He couldn't do it anymore. Daniel jumped down and ran to his hiding spot behind the sofa.

He closed his eyes again. He would fall asleep and when he woke up, the new cat would be gone.

A TIER-

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots-The Flaming Lips: Solid album. Iconic cover art. “Do You Realize??” always got me feeling feelings

Violent Femmes-Violent Femmes: Top 3 favorite band. Every song went platinum in my household. Would have been higher but reminds me of my mom too much.

Dig Me Out- Sleater-Kinney: Got it because the name sounded familiar. Ended up loving them! Doesn’t sound right if it’s not played loud, though, and considering I live in an apartment, I don’t play it often.

Fear Yourself-Daniel Johnston: Got it because I love “Hi, How Are You” but haven’t been able to find it anywhere. Was pleasantly surprised! Hits the same melancholy spot but slightly more upbeat.

Figure 8-Elliot Smith: My favorite sad boy that definitely DIDN’T kill himself. Not my favorite Elliot album but every one of his albums is A tier personally.

The Diary of Alicia Keys-Alicia Keys: WENT QUADRUPLE PLATINUM IN OUR HOUSEHOLD. Prime cleaning the house on Sunday music. Dragon Days is seriously underrated.

Garbage-Garbage: Don’t know how to say this without sounding insane but this album sounds like the color #DC007F and I like that color a lot

Money for Nothing- Dire Straits: Top tier dad music.

Lumine fever- The Adrenals: Got it cuz the cover looked cool. Was pleasantly surprised! They rock the adequate amount

Rocket to Russia- Ramones: They’re good but I don’t get the hype honestly. They’re the Flavor-Aid of Punk

Starfish- The Church: Only love one song on it, the only song anyone likes tbh. The rest are your standard 80s deal

Crooked Rain-Pavement: I really love Pavement but there is a thing as too much Pavement and I think I’ve reached it

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-Wilco: Honestly should have been in A tier but all the pretentious music dudes I’ve met has soured this album for me so it goes in B outta spite. Jesus Etc my fave song tho

Summerteeth-Wilco: Good background music. I can’t remember any songs off it.

Los Angeles/Wild Gift-X: I like X but I hate that fucking album art omg it’s so hard to look at. I like their songs individually but as a cohesive album, eh.

D TIER-

Throwing Copper-Live: bought it on sale with the above 3 but liked this one substantially less. Only redeeming quality to me is the album art.

Ben Folds Five-Ben Folds Five: Misleading considering there’s only 3 of them. He sounds like my ex boyfriend from highschool before I realized I liked girls

F Tier-

The Ragetones/Fall Apart-The Ragetones: Saw them play at a shitting basement show. Everything sounds better when you can barely hear yourself think.

Daniel isn’t sure about a lot of things. But he’s sure about two things; one, that he loves Max in every universe, and, two, that Max loves cats in every universe.

“Maine Coon… Bri’ish Short hair… Siamese!”

Daniel’s realized long ago he’s never getting more cat knowledge than Max has, but he learns things, from the silly YouTube videos Max wants to watch together or the ‘heads up’ inspired game that Max is playing on the iPad where it shows him pictures of a cat and he has to name it.

Sometimes he lets Daniel play, but Daniel sucks. And so Daniel has learned to take the piss out of himself, answers “Tiger!” when he sees an orange cat and “Elephant!” when it’s gray. Just cause it pulls such delightful little giggles out of Max when he goes

“Noooooooooo, Daddy! Silly!”

Uncle Nico doesn’t play it silly, and tries to outsmart Max by randomly guessing breeds until Max gently touches his arm and said.

“You’re not very smart, Uncle Nico.” With a serious little frown on his face and something that seemed like genuine concern.

Daniel choked on his own spit and didn’t manage to cough down the laughing fit that followed shortly after.

Business at the hospital had picked up recently. It felt like everyday there was an emergency patient coming in. Some were established patients and some were walk-ins. Chopper had finished his short training at the reception desk and was now doing the rest of his externship in internal medicine with Dr. Newgate. Needless to say, you were feeling a little overwhelmed with work.

At least Azul was doing better with her physical therapy and coming to work with you everyday. She got plenty of attention and exercise.

This particular day was no different. The phone was ringing off the hook, emails were piling up and you'd had two emergency walk-ins, the second of which was crashing when they entered the building.

You made a stat page and ran around the desk taking the cat from the client to get him to the treatment area or a technician - whichever you made it to first. Bepo came bounding out of IMed and swept the carrier out of your hands.

“Distressed breathing!” Was all you managed to get out before the mink was running back to treatment.

You turned back to the frantic elderly woman that brought him in. Betty was an established client. Her kitty Stevie had been coming to the practice to be treated by Dr. Newgate long before your time at Phoenix Rising.

Stevie had a multitude of medical issues that had Betty stopping in to fill medications at least every other week. He was an elderly flame point Siamese that she rescued in an alley when he was just a kitten.

“I've never seen him like this.” She cried as you wrapped your arms around her.

“It's alright, Dr. Newgate is looking at him now. We'll take good care of him.” You rubbed her back and guided her into an exam room to calm down.

After getting her seated you took a box of tissues from the cabinet and placed it in the chair next to her. Betty wiped her eyes and adjusted her glasses as she told you how she'd found Stevie twelve years ago. He was a feral kitten and in many ways still was. He didn't like being handled, even by Betty. You'd heard this story many times before, but nodded along like it was the first time because it calmed her down. As she was nearing the end of her tale Bepo stepped into the room.

“I'm sorry,” he nodded toward you, “Dr. Newgate will be in shortly. I just needed to get some information from Mrs. Daniels.”

“Sure,” you turned to Betty, “I'll be at reception if you need anything.”

Using the back door of the exam room you stepped into the treatment area to see Marco closing the door to the oxygen kennel where he'd placed Stevie. The blonde shook his head as he approached.

“Can you please get the euthanasia paperwork ready for him? I'm going to have a tough conversation with Betty-yoi.”

“There's nothing you can do?” You frowned.

“Even I have limits F/N,” he smiled softly, “we've talked about this.”

Dr. Newgate happened to possess a very special devil fruit. Not many knew about it - having a devil fruit was still fairly taboo. Most people with devil fruits had ties to the great pirate era. Though that time was mostly over, you definitely didn't want the government to know if you had one. Those who were known were documented and kept track of. You weren't entirely sure in what capacity, since you yourself didn't have one, but you'd never tell on those who did.

Marco used his power sparingly at work. He'd told you many times that death was a fate he couldn't change. Small wounds and minor illnesses were one thing, bringing a patient from the fringes of the afterlife was another. You hadn't seen him use the fruit in its full glory but you'd heard stories from his brothers, Ace and Thatch.

There was a reason the hospital was called Phoenix Rising.

Once you had the paperwork ready you reentered the exam room to speak to Betty. Part of your job, unfortunately, was helping clients make the most difficult but most humane decisions for their pets. Humane euthanasia allowed them to say goodbye with dignity and end their suffering. It had been hard for you at first but over the years you'd developed the simplest, most comforting way to go over after care.

After choosing a cremation package and urn, more fond stories and tears you had Bepo bring Stevie in for his final goodbye. Betty thanked you for finally giving her the closeness his feral nature never allowed and you stepped out of the room into the treatment area. Taking a deep breath you pushed back tears.

“I don't envy you for that,” Shachi stepped away from the doctors as they were rounding in a departmental transfer.

“You're the ones that do the hard part.” You stood at one of the computers to input Stevie’s aftercare information.

“People are the hard part.” He chuckled, patting your shoulder, “Coffee is on me later, ok?”

“Sure, thanks.” You nodded offering a small smile.

“Shouldn't you be prepping the next case, Shachi?” Dr. Trafalgar called sternly.

“I'm going, I'm going.” The redhead muttered heading back to the surgery wing.

“Are they ready for me to go back in-yoi?” Dr. Newgate stepped away from the surgeon.

“Give her ten minutes, she's happy to hold him for a while.”

Marco palmed your shoulder as he moved past you, “I'll check on her in a bit then.”

It was hard to say how you felt after guiding a client through that process. Sometimes it was joyous - a celebration of life. This time the rest of your shift would definitely be somber.

Goodbyes are always hard, even when you're a bystander.

The day carried on at a pace you didn't much care for. When your break finally rolled around you decided to take it outside. The weather had cooled down quite a bit, so you sat bundled up on a blanket in a patch of grass across the parking lot from the clinic with Azul curled up in your lap. It was a calm cloudy day, your favorite. You quietly enjoyed your sandwich and rubbed Azul’s ears taking the time to relax and reset.

A warm to-go coffee cup sat on your desk with your initials scrolled across. It wasn't from Sanji’s Café, so you knew it wasn't from Dr. Newgate. Shachi must've made good on his promise. As you picked it up to take a drink the redhead stepped into the lobby with a cup of his own in hand.

“What the heck F/N? I wasn't kidding when I said coffee was on me today.” He held up the cup with Sanji's logo.

“I thought this was from you?” You looked at him confused.

“So you didn't?”

“Nope. Maybe Dr. Newgate stopped somewhere else on his way back from lunch today.” You murmured, analyzing the cup in your hand.

“He hasn't left property today.” He frowned, “I told Penguin I was getting you some - he's probably trolling me.”

“Well, it's not like I won't accept the one you got me.” You chuckled, “I can put it in the fridge and have it tomorrow. Or the way today is going, maybe a little later on.”

“Oh,” he perked up, “I guess that's true. I'll put it away for you.”

Business continued as usual after lunch. Things stayed steady enough to keep your mind off the morning. It was one of the few days you couldn't wait to clock out. A cold beer, a book and puppy snuggles were waiting to cure you from the stress of the day. When that time finally came you made your way back to the ward in the surgery wing to get your girl.

She roamed around in the ward while you cleaned out and wiped down the kennel she'd spent the day in.

“You're as ready to go home as I am huh, sweet girl?”

You stepped on the lever that lifted the lid to the aluminum trash can in the corner of the room, eyes going wide as you caught sight of the coffee cup sitting in the bottom of the bin. It matched the one that had been left at your desk after lunch but the initials on the cup were L.D.T.

Box, Box - Secretly Married au drabble

Daniel stood up from the sofa and stretched. He yawned as he didn't, left hand absently scratching at his stomach as his t-shirt rode up.

He couldn't help but smile as he turned back towards the couch where Lando was sleeping. He'd fallen asleep halfway through the movie after insisting he had wanted to watch it. He was curled up, drowning in one of Daniels oversized hoodies and some Enchante shorts. His face half buried in the pillows under his head as he snored softly.

He looked peaceful and adorable.

The only thing that looked even cuter than him was their little eight month old Siamese kitten, Pit. Pit was curled up against Lando's chest, half tucked under his chin. When Daniel had moved, she had lifted her little cream head and blinked sleepily with blue eyes before moving to stretch.

"Box, box, Pit", Daniel whispered, not wanting to wake up Lando. As soon as he had said those words, Pit was stretching again and moving, trotting off down the hallway of their apartment, leaving Daniel to carefully lift Lando into his arms.

"What's happening?" Lando slurred, pushing his face against Daniel's shoulder with a whine.

"Takin' you to bed, sleepy head", Daniel laughed softly, kissing his head, using his elbow to turn off lights as he went.

When they made it to the bedroom, Lando was dozing once more, and Pit was waiting for them. She was curled up on her little blanket at the end of the bed, washing her face and looking so innocent when Daniel knew she'd end up on one of their pillows in the next few hours.

"Good girl, Pit", Lando murmured as Daniel set him down, taking a moment to scratch at her ears and give her a little kiss before he stripped off the hoodie and fell into bed, "Danny, cuddles"

"Your father is almost as demanding as you are", Daniel said to Pit, who made a little "mreow" sound at him that Daniel accepted as confirmation before he crawled into bed.

In the end, Lando got his cuddles, and Daniel got a mouthful of tail when he woke up to Pit worming her way onto his pillow at 4am.

Canis Major City OCs

I have a fictional city inhabited by furries and lemme tell you about all the inhabitants that I know of rn

Celeste- My first character in this world and yet she doesn't have a last name for some reason. She's a Siamese cat with bright blue eyes. She's really anxious, and due to a traumatic history is very afraid of dogs until she meets her college roommate, Ginger. She is not in any romantic relationships as of now.

Ginger Honey- Celeste's roommate, Ginger is a beagi (beagle + corgi) dog who is extremely kind, soft hearted and friendly. She likes to crochet. She's very nice to Celeste and makes sure not to trigger her fear of dogs, which helps her a lot. The two become fast best friends. Ginger is currently in a relationship with a dog named Violet Dobermann, who is very kind and a nice change of pace from her past relationship that's she's still traumatized from--a golden retriever named Buddy, who had a ton of red flags she didn't see.

Briar- Briar is a whitetail deer buck and the friend of Celeste, Ginger, and Violet, the longterm boyfriend of Fern, and the brother of Branch. He wears a lot of flannel--straight Midwest flannel, in contrast with his brother, who does indeed wear it as gay flannel--and occasionally denim jackets. He has a particular interest in plant biology. Briar and Fern met Celeste when she was being mugged in an alley of the city, where they threatened the muggers and made sure Celeste was okay, and they've been friends ever since.

Fern- Fern is a whitetail-mule cross doe and the friend of Violet, Ginger, and Celeste, and the longterm girlfriend of Briar. She likes to knit and crochet. She is also very clever and she waa the one that sensed there was a problem nearby, leading her and Briar to find Celeste being threatened in the alley.

Daniel Sheppard/Spot-Sheppard- Daniel is a White German Shepherd dog and the boyfriend/husband of Pepper Spot/Spot-Sheppard, the son of Franklin and Maria Sheppard, the best friend of Grayson Thunder, and the friend of Celeste, Ginger, and Royal Lassie, among others. He was raised in a small town in the Midwest and came to the city to go to school. He met Pepper on a summer trip to see the city, and they became friends and were in contact all the way through Daniel's school.

Pepper Spot/Spot-Sheppard- Pepper is a black Labrador retriever and the husband/partner of Daniel Sheppard/Spot Sheppard, the son of an unnamed black Labrador mother and an unnamed yellow Lab father who was mostly absent in his life, the brother of Nutmeg Spot who is a chocolate Lab and a pediatric nurse, and the friend of Celeste, Ginger, and Royal Lassie. Pepper is very socially adept, kind, friendly, and witty. He likes to swim, being naturally a water dog, but he doesn't like lakes or rivers. He is quite a bit more concerned with his appearance than Daniel is, and although Labs do tend to be broader, he is insecure about his weight. Pepper has a small white mismark on his chest that technically disqualifies him from being "officially" a Labrador, which he finds funny.

Royal Lassie- Royal is a female rough collie dog and the friend of Pepper and Daniel as well as the girlfriend of a thus far unnamed male raccoon. She's actually the only of these I have an actual voice for...she would sound like Iliza Shlesinger. Royal has rather a serious personality and dry sense of humor, and she is sex-averse asexual despite what one would think based on her clothing. She works as a model, but she's trying to persue a stand-up career as well. She has a very conventionally attractive body and is very confident, which tends to throw people off upon being told about her sexuality. Omfg I love her so much she's so cool...

clem - akita, pierre - grey poodle, cherry - dalmatian, maribel - afghan hound, xavier - grey fox

peach - siamese cat, francisco - alaskan malamute/husky mix, sugarplum - bernese mountain dog, denise - dobermann, pomelo - australian shepherd

and jeanne - black wolf!

bad habit:

barbara is a suffolk/rambouillet ewe, daniel is a mountain coyote!

ganymede is a border collie, enceladus is a serval cat, anteros is a thylacine, niobe is a french lop rabbit, and thebe (previously dolisay) is a dragon, but her dna is based on a frilled lizard!
