ok hear me out: AU where all the smash fighters not explicitly killed in the World of Light opening cutscene somehow survive and have to take on their post-apocalyptic world together

a comprehensive list on which smash fighters died in Galeem's initial attack:

the "not seen killed but there IS a body" tier is for characters who we don't see vaporized by galeem's light but are clearly visible in the scene with all the puppet fighters. I tried my best but that scene is REALLY dark with the only visible light being the glowing eyes so if you can point to a puppet fighter and say "that's X, you can tell because of their Y" I'll take them off the survivor tier

making this tierlist made me realize how few characters we see actually killed. not shulk? not fox? not THE MARIO BROTHERS??? (obviously mario is the one who we see puppeted but we never see his actual death and that surprised me)

and if we count the DLC fighters and Kirby that's a total of 52 survivors of Galeem's attack and that's a lot so to make it more bite-sized i split them up into groups like how you see people group up in zombie movies. they're also grouped by theme!

Have some lore for them, too! Beware my severe bias towards a few groups.

"The Survivor" - Kirby! Survived Galeem's initial attack by temporarily warping to a different dimension.

"The Littles" - Bowser Jr, the Ice Climbers, Little Mac, Pichu, Olimar and Alph, Ness, Lucas, Isabelle, and Meta Knight. These fighters are all children or physically small in some way. They all attempted to use the rocks and mountain faces as cover against the initial attack, but lost their footing and fell off the cliff as Galeem's rays destroyed it. Little Mac caught Pichu and tried to shield her with his own body as they fell.

Olimar and Alph were saved by their Winged Pikmin, Meta Knight saved himself with his wings, Isabelle caught herself with the balloons from her Up Special, and Bowser Jr. used the propeller of his Koopa Clown Car. Olimar and Alph caught Popo and Nana, Lucas grabbed Bowser Jr. with Rope Snake, Meta Knight caught Ness, and Isabelle caught Mac (and Pichu by extension).

By the time they had reached the bottom of the valley, Galeem was so distracted with trying to annihilate Kirby that he didn't notice that The Littles were still alive. They survived the universe-consuming blast by hiding out in a cave, since that blast seemingly did not affect the terrain.

"The Nobles" - Peach, Daisy, Chrom, King Dedede, Ganondorf, Corrin, King K. Rool, Lucina, Roy, and Marth. These fighters are all royalty or have noble blood flowing through their veins.

"The Perserverers" - Cloud, Ike, Ken, Simon, Richter, Ryu, Robin, Luigi, the Miis, Wario, and Shulk. Okay I'll be honest there's no theme with this one. I originally wanted Incineroar in this group and the theme to be they all had jobs that had to do with kicking people's asses but then there was Luigi and Wario and all the other guys and I just threw the theme out the window lol.

"The Non-Humans" - Incineroar, Wolf, Dark Samus, Yoshi, R.O.B, Pac-Man, Ridley, Donkey Kong, and Mr. Game & Watch. These fighters are all non-human. Game & Watch and Pac-Man survived by simply being too Flat but I'm unsure how the others would have escaped.

"The Newcomers" - Piranha Plant, Joker, Hero, Banjo and Kazooie, Terry, Byleth, Min-Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Pyra and Mythra, Kazuya, and Sora. These fighters are the DLC characters. Survived Galeem's initial attack by virtue of being in a different dimension when it happened. Pulled through time and space to the World of Light, they band together to find a way back to their home dimensions (although for some, this team-up happened very begrudgingly).

I don't know much about some of these franchises, so I'm welcome to suggestions to help me develop this AU! Seriously I am on my hands and knees BEGGING for suggestions because so far the only group that is developed is The Littles 😭

Playing this game (without the likes) 🫶

1. enemies to lovers, best friends to lovers, lord and their knight ❤️

2. Not sure if these are tropes, but yandere lover (just not a very big fan of yandere), obsessive love (treating their partner as a possession), misogynistic attitudes or abusive power in a relationship (basically a partner defining what their partner, whether it be a woman or man, should do or behave, and the victimized partner finds it hot???)

3. Gradual mutual understanding for one another! I also learn more about the characters' personalities this way!

4. One or both partners experience withdrawal when they're being separated from each other lol. True feelings often emerge from such situations and it's adorable...

8. Using my favorite pair ferdibert, they are reversible, but I have a really strong preference for dom Hubert and sub Ferdinand. However!! I'm not a big fan of where Ferdinand is written or drawn very femininely. This applies to any MxM pair. I'm not against the concept of femininity in males, but when used in a stereotypical fashion, it rubs me the wrong way. Just a subtle depiction of their relationship dynamic is perfect to me! I'm alright with seeing SFW artwork of the reverse and reading said fics, but NSFW is where I draw the line

9. Thinking about the games I've played, I can think of at least one pair I like to see romantically, so yes 😂

i ship them more in some incarnations than others, but like, they're literally soulmates and every time they interact, no matter which version of them it is, i just love them. i'm playing majora's mask right now and ugh i miss zelda, why is she not in this game >:( also, it actually kind of drives me nuts that botw/totk-verse zelink specifically isn't canon?! like literally how are they not!! the game like. heavily implies that they share a house because "zelda's" house is just straight up link's old house and it has his champion photo and his hairtie and stuff in it. and also only one bed. but then, nope, link doesn't live there anymore and you've gotta buy him another house?? whyyyy nintendo. why would you have zelda steal link's house but keep his stuff in it akjsdfgfdkggd--

i like to multiship with the xenoblade 1 cast, partially because it's a bit of a niche fandom so i'll take what i can get--for example, did you know that one of the most popular ships in the xenoblade chronicles ao3 tag is a smash bros-related crossover ship (it's shulk/robin from fire emblem)? i know this because after i played xenoblade chronicles definitive edition i basically went on a huge xenoblade 1 fic binge and during that time i read a lot of shiora fics! i've seen some criticisms of fiora's character, saying she should be more developed outside of her relationship with shulk, and to an extent i agree but i also still really like how their relationship is portrayed in the game? they're childhood friends who are just really sweet and supportive of each other and i'm glad they get to be happy together. i only didn't circle "i need this to be canon" because of course, they're already canon!

Zelda: (Sighed a bit Sadly as she watches TV on the sofa)

Toon: Hey, Zelda.

Zelda: Hey, Toon.....

Toon: (Notice Zelda's Sad Expression) You alright?

Zelda: Sort of. I'm just a bit bummed out today...

Toon: Why? (Got on the Sofa and Sat right next to Zelda) Does it have anything to do with today being Valentine's day?

Zelda: Yep. Almost everyone here already had their significant other and I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't.

Toon: Did you had a crush on someone at one point?

Zelda: I did. (Chuckles Very Lightly) A few actually.

Toon: Really?

Zelda: (Nodded) Mmhmm. There was Shulk, Roy, Robin, Eleven, Big Link-

Zelda: Toon, Shadow really isn't as scary as you or anyone else thinks he is. Sure he take things a lot more seriously and all, but he can be a sweetheart when he wants to be. So I'm positive that he wouldn't mind you asking Hat Kid out. Just as long as you treat her nicely of course.

Toon: Yeah....I guess I could give this a try now that I don't have anything to be scare of now, huh?

Zelda: (Nodded with Smile) Exactly.

Title: Cloud and Lucina’s Coping of the Multishipping Harem Hell, part 2

Lucina: Alright, so here’s what happened: I was walking out of my father’s home until I ran into Robin, who asked me for assistance. I asked what was wrong and he said that he needed help organizing all of his tomes properly because they were all scattered around on the floor of his office. After a good 10 minutes have passed, he thanked me and gave me a hug. I told him to think nothing of it and ran out of his office, only to run into Severa, who are glaring at me. I asked her “Is something wrong?” and she said “Yeah, we were supposed to be training for our next fight!” I was a bit confused from what she meant by that, but decided to oblige anyway. During our training, she caught me off guard by knocking my sword out of my hand and she sheathed her blade in victory. She said “Heh! I knew I could-” then tripped over to me and we both fell onto the ground. As she was getting up, we were both staring at each other face-to-face and her face start to turn red. “W-What are you looking at? Stop staring!” she said, as she quickly got back up. She held her hand out and helped me up. Then, Kamui appeared behind me and asked me if I wanted to go to the beach with her. I said “sure” and picked out a red bathing suit for me to go swimming. Kamui kept looking over me and said how adorable and gorgeous I looked. I was rather flattered by her humble comments until she licked my cheek like an animal. She said “this taste...this is the taste...of a wonderful woman.” I was starting to get all flustered and backed away from her until I bumped into Palutena and Camilla. Palutena said to me then to Kamui “Hello, Lucina. Mind if I steal your woman for while?” Then she grabbed my arm and said “Thank you.” Kamui tried to stop her, but Palutena teleported us away before Kamui could get the chance. Palutena and Camilla showed me to a hot springs and asked if I would be okay to join them. I said “sure”, grabbed a towel and we were both in the springs for a good 15 minutes. The two spent most of her time gazing at me, complementing how smooth my skin looked and how my father must be a wonderful man to have me as his daughter. At one point, they even huddled close to me, cheek-to-cheek. Camilla then asked if it was okay for her to wash my hair, only for us to be interrupted by Sakura from Hoshido walking into the room and asked me for assistance. I quickly got out of the springs and asked what she needed. She asked me to “pretend to be Marth” and take her on a date. I was a little weirded out by this request, but obliged nonetheless. I took her out on a picnic underneath a tree and the two of us began conversating about our families. At one point, she was slowly reaching her hand out to grab mine and I took notice. She apologized for trying to make such as “silly move”, but I told her “it’s okay” and I held out my hand for her to hold it. Her face immediately went red, grabbed my hand without hesitation, and said "Y-Your hand feels very warm and gentle.” Suddenly, she got distracted by something off into the distance and decided to check it out. I tried to follow her, but a black figure quickly stepped in front of me. That figure was Joker, aka Ren Amamiya. He asked me if I was interested in joining the Phantom Thieves, but I respectfully declined, saying that I didn’t want to leave my hometown and my family behind. He then said “then perhaps I’ll have to take your heart to change your mind...” and got in a little too close for comfort. Shulk then appeared and yelled Joker off. Shulk asked me if I was alright and I told him I was okay. He said he was worried that Joker was gonna do something rather funny and to me and offered to take me home. I accepted his offer and he walked me home, holding my hand. After walking me home, I opened the door and saw Richter in the kitchen, speaking to my father. I asked what he was doing her, and he asked me to help him on a quest to kill Dracula once again. I accepted his offer and we both stormed a big castle, slaying tons and tons of enemies. As we got into the throne room, we decided to waste no time killing Dracula head-on. After the vampire was successfully defeated, Richter thanked me greatly and offered to take me back home for my troubles. I accepted his offer and he gave me a piggyback ride all the way back to town. After successfully escorting me back, I ran right into Pit, who asked me if I was busy. I said “no” and he was more than happy to hear that. He grabbed my hand and we both went to an amusement park. We both had a lot fun playing games up until we decided to take a ride on the Ferris wheel. We were both looking at each other nervously until we heard a large explosion off into the distance. Specifically, the woods. Pit grabbed and carried me off to where the explosion was and we saw Link fighting against Ganondorf. The two of us decided to aid him and we successfully slayed the beast. Link thanked us both and gave me a big, warm smile. I couldn’t help but smile back at him until Inigo walked by and said “Ah! There’s that smile!” and walked towards me, wrapping his arm around my neck, chuckling. I couldn’t help but chuckle alongside him, although more nervously. Gerome noticed me off into the distance and ran towards me. He told Inigo off, saying “You’re making her uncomfortable!” and Inigo obliged saying “Okay! Okay! I wasn’t getting touchy with her. Honest!” Gerome looked over at me and asked if I needed another mask replace my old one, but I told him that I’m fine and thanked him for the offer anyway. I backed away from the boys (who were arguing with one another) until I accidentally bumped into Tiki, who said “Ah! Just the person I was looking for! Just for me?” Once again, I was a bit weirded out by this request, but obliged nonetheless. I put on my bravado persona and she giggled from my performance. She thanked me kindly, hugged me, and ran off. As I was looking around myself in the woods, I saw Samus, who was laying unconscious on the ground. I tried yelling at the boys to help me out, but suddenly, they were gone within a blink of an eye. So, I decided to take manners into my own hand and carried Samus to my home, bridal-carry style. She was slowly waking up from unconsciousness, looked at me, smiled, and said “my hero”. I was flattered by this statement and successfully carried her to safety with no problems whatsoever. After placing her onto my bed, I felt a dark presence downstairs and ran to see what the problem was...and I saw Grima. Possessing Robin. Again. He turned to notice me and I attempted to swing my sword at him, only for him to dodge, kick it out of my hand, and pin me against the wall. He looked at me with a malicious grin and said “Perhaps possessing a vessel like this was a mistake. Maybe...just maybe...you could make a better vessel than this one.” And right as he began to glow with an intense, dark energy, that’s when I woke up.

Cloud (eyes widened, which doesn’t happen often for him): Oof. Just...oof.

Lucina: “Oof” is right. Seems I wasn’t the only one coping about dreams like this.

Cloud: More like a Harem Hell.

Lucina: Is that what we call dreams like that?

Cloud: Perhaps.

Lucina: Then how do we cope with such weird dreams like this?!

Cloud: You’ll find a way. Me, on the other hand...BARKEEP! Get me something that’ll get me drunk fast.

*The barkeeper nods, hands him a bottle of wine*

Cloud: Thanks.

Lucina: ...Can I have some?

Cloud: You wanna drown this out too?

Lucina: Is this how you solve these...”Harem Hell” dream problems?

Cloud: To me, it does. If you wanna join in, then I won’t stop ya.

Lucina (completely naive to the concept of using alcohol to cope): Then allow me to join you! Barkeep, good sir, get me a bottle!

*The barkeeper nods, and does so. Cloud and Lucina clink their bottles together*

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Which fighters are more anime?

You know, people often accuse certain fighters of being “too anime“. But does being Japanese-styled simply make a character “anime“, even if they’re not in any anime material? “Anime“ itself refers to the grand majority of Japanese cartoons, after all - it’s primarily in the animation. You wouldn’t call manga alone “anime“ because it’s not animated - it’s printed stills. In fact, why the H don’t people use the term “manga“ for these Japanese-styles?

Well, I say that’s not good enough. Plenty of “anime“-looking characters don’t even get their own anime stuff. So here’s what I’m gonna do. I’ll sort the fighters based on what anime material they’ve appeared in.

Higher-up tiers will take priority over lower tiers, so some fighters in the Anime (Series) tier may also be in anime movies, or anime-style commercials. I’ll give some mention to those if I can.

-= ANIME (SERIES) =- - This tier is for series of anime episodes (at least 3) - each episode would of course need to be fairly long, like 15+ minutes. - Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros.: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Koopalings - Kirby: Right Back At Ya!: Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede - Pokémon (anime): Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Mewtwo, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar - Pokémon Origins: Pokémon Trainer (plus Charizard, Mewtwo, and others) - F-Zero: GP Legend: Captain Falcon - Sonic X: Sonic

Wario’s Woods and Legend of Zelda) up to this tier. - I was REALLY hesitant in putting Link here, since the justification I had at the time was for a Smash Bros. newcomer trailer. However, since he appeared in the aforementioned Famicom commercial, he’s probably safe. But then Dark Pit wouldn’t have any anime appearances if I went by that technicality...Though since I used it, maybe Byleth should be here, too?

-= ANIME (GAME CUTSCENES) =- - This is for fighters who were in games with anime-style cutscenes and whatnot. - Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi’s Adventure Land: Yoshi - Fire Emblem: Three Houses: Byleth - Wario Land: Shake It: Wario - (also) Pokémon Channel: Pichu, Squirtle (in Pichu Brothers) - (also) Sonic Riders: Sonic - (also) Street Fighter 4 (all versions): Ryu, Ken - (also) Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes: Ryu - (also) Persona 5: Joker - ...Actually, Chrom was technically in anime-style game cutscenes in Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE. Not the same as the general Chrom, but...

-= NOT ANIME =- - ...And now all the fighters that WEREN’T in any kind of anime. If I counted manga, then this would be pretty empty, but we’re focusing on anime here. So! Let’s see which fighters are NOT anime! - Daisy, Dr. Mario, Rosalina & Luma (forgot their avatar), Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, King K. Rool, Sheik, Ganondorf, Young Link, Toon Link, Samus, Dark Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Ridley, Wolf, Ness, Lucas, Ice Climbers, Lucina, Roy, Robin, Corrin, Mr. Game & Watch, Snake, Olimar, Alph, R.O.B., Isabelle, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Mii Fighters, PAC-MAN, Shulk, Duck Hunt, Inkling, Simon, Richter, Hero (Eleven, Solo, Eight), Banjo & Kazooie - Ones that really are anime in hindsight: Donkey Kong, Zelda, Chrom - Castlevania does have an animated series, but it’s being done by Americans. While the style is anime-inspired, it’s not officially Japanese-drawn or -animated (much like Avatar: The Last Airbender) ...so it’s not anime. Besides, I don’t think Simon or Richter have appeared in it. It’s mainly focused on Trevor’s time. - The pseudo-3D anime style didn’t appear in Fire Emblem cutscenes until Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, which was after the release of Fates. This trend would, however, continue in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Ahem...so there you have it! Iggy is more anime than Shulk. Wario is more anime than Lucina. And Piranha Plant is more anime than three of the playable Heroes!

...But if you REALLY don’t want any more “anime” in Smash, then you better kiss Dante, Viewtiful Joe, KOS-MOS, Lloyd Irving, and Heihachi (and probably others) goodbye.
