I do ship it!

What made you ship it?

Definitely the fandom, lol. I admit I had not thought much about Coldflashwave as a ship until I started reading fic, especially nirejseki’s fics, which are a pure delight. In general I’d rather read about Coldflash about all else and I’m not much of a multishipper, but Mick is pretty much the only character that I give a pass to XD

What are your favorite things about the ship?

My favorite thing about Coldflashwave is that adding Barry to Coldwave is really what makes Coldwave work for me. At least in terms of them NOT imploding. I feel like Len and Mick are so painfully emotionally stunted and their relationship is so volatile that they kinda need a third party to balance them out.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Yeah, I hate that so many Coldflashwave fics are just “Barry is completely submissive to Mick and Len and lets them do anything to him, the end.” That’s probably the most boring iteration of this ship to me.

What made me ship it: The episode of LoT where Len explains how he and Mick have known each other since they were kids. Also that scene where Len lets Mick beat the shit out of him? *Chef''s kiss* (Yes, I realise that this probably says something about me that I don't want to address...)

My favourite thing: The Boss/Guard dog dynamic works so well for them. And when Mick thought he was cracking up, seeing Len's 'ghost'

Unpopular opinion: I don't know if it's an Unpopular one, but I really wish the show had let Mick have more of his comic qualities- being a smart dweeb.

Well, I was thinking I could write a Sara/Len/Mick fic for the Criminal 4 Criminal 4 Criminal prompt

And realized that I just don't vibe with Sara/Len at all and really only like Sara & Mick

yeah so much for writing for that ship for the first time. *shrugs* but when you look at a ship and go 'i just... don't really think they fit as anything but friends/coworkers' then... well what can you do

I do love Coldwave though so maybe if I can think of another criminal who'd fit well with them as a ship then it'll give me an idea for that bingo square

What about Coldwave?(Len/Mick)

Ahh sorry this one took me a while to answer!

The honest answer to this one is... it's complicated. I've read fics of them and enjoyed them. I love watching them on screen together. I think their dynamic is fascinating and interesting. But do I ship it?? Maybe? Yes? No?

I think Coldwave is impossible to pin down to a basic yes or no answer. There is SO much going on with those two. They have one of the most complex and fucked up and deeply fascinating dynamics in the whole Arrowverse, in my humble opinion. Saying I ship them almost feels... reductive? Like I would almost be tempted to describe them as queerplatonic life partners but I also would not be at all surprised if their relationship had crossed lines into sexual territory and also that they might be in romantic love with each other a little bit and just too repressed to ever really address it so like. What does it all mean? They are a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a blue parka and a fireman's uniform.

Why don’t you ship it?

This one is really hard to answer because it's not that I don't ship it in theory, but I don't feel the same way about them that I do about other ships I like. I have no desire to smush their faces together and make them kiss, only occasional urges to read about them having sex, and even then I generally only like that if it's in a polyamorous way and there's someone between them to kind of mediate. I want to put them in a cage like a couple of lab rats and study them intensely to figure out what the fuck is wrong with them, but I don't get all warm and fuzzy inside when they interact.

I also have this thing with ships where like... I am a firm believer that contempt is a complete killer in a relationship. I will ship the nastiest, most toxic, unhealthy ship alive, but the people involved have to respect one another. There has to be equal footing there, and I don't necessarily feel like Coldwave has that. Particularly Doomworld Coldwave, where Len fucking. Barks at him and punches him in the face despite knowing Mick won't fight back. Like I wouldn't mind them punching EACH OTHER, but that just felt so like. Demeaning in a way that I am not into.

Even when they first showed up on the Flash, when Mick's characterization was very different (and BOY is it different, when me and my friend rewatched it, I swear I barely recognized him in his first ep) they never fully felt like equals to me. I felt like the show kind of set Mick up as secondary and not in a second-in-command kinda way, but in a way that didn't really respect him as much as a character (though I'll give them their due that this did change later on in Legends). Something about Len and Mick's dynamic has always felt skewed to me for that reason. Legends even addresses that by pointing out that Rip didn't even WANT Mick, he just treated him as an extension of Len, like fine, we'll take him because he goes where Snart does, and I feel like Len ALSO kinda treats Mick that way. Something about it has never sat right with me personally, idk. It feels like Len doesn't really respect him in the same way, he's just always taken for granted that Mick will do as he's told...

And even after saying all that there's something else that is entirely unquantifiable that just makes me like. I don't know what it is. They baffle me, honestly.

2. What would have made you like it?

I find Coldwave easier when they have someone between them as like... a barrier, I guess? Like someone else for them to focus their attentions on so they don't have to confront what they mean to one another. So I actually very much enjoy, for example, coldflashwave, where Barry is between them and seeing how they interact around him, and what that reveals about them and their relationship. It's very layered and nuanced. So I guess throwing someone else in the mix would help haha, cos they might help to temper some of the toxicity and maladaptive coping mechanisms and toxic masculinity going on in there.

Alternatively, I think if Len had been around for more of Legends and we had seen how Mick's later development changed their dynamic, that would probably have affected a lot of the things about them that make me kind of uneasy.

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Like I said, their relationship fascinates me. If I had my way, then we would get a Young Rogues show that just follows a young Len and Mick and their exploits (or even just a flashback episode, come on) because there is SO much to unpack there. They have such a rich history. I love how Mick is another person that humanizes Len because despite not treating him well a lot of the time, he really does care for him. And I love Mick calling Len out on his shit. They also have such excellent chemistry on screen no matter what the context is, which of course is probably because Dom and Wentworth are so close in real life... I could probably write whole essays on these two, as I believe I have aptly demonstrated haha

I’ve been tagged by frequent partner in headcanons @sophiainspace for the Last Huzzah To This Hyperfixation fic meme, which is appropriate as I am also likely giving a last huzzah to the Arrowverse! (Incredibly reluctantly, kicking and screaming against my brain all the way, but what can you do)

My first fic for this fandom was Your Move, on 30 November 2019, an incredibly creepy prelude-to-Eowells/Hartley that set the stage for many of my later works

My favorite fic I’ve written is…oh so many choices. The one I go back and reread most often is If You Wanna Fight (We Can Go All Night), which is playful smutty Coldwave—with an honorable mention to With Benefits, in which aro Len and ace Mick end up doing affection at cross purposes

My fluffiest fic is probably Day In, which is a Flashpiper domestic fluff interlude in the middle of a fairly angsty series—I can throw in rest-point fluff sometimes!

My funniest fic is, hands down, Floordrobe Malfunction, which is exactly what it sounds like: Lisa/Cisco/Hartley get caught in the middle of V-polyam shenanigans and end up switching clothes

My saddest fic is Worse When It’s Late, one of only two fics I went into the knowing they couldn’t have a happy ending. (The other is At All Costs, which is just about as bad)

A fic I almost didn’t post was Worse When It’s Late, just because it was so much darker than my usual fare. I’m proud of how it turned out but I was terrified of how people might react to it

The fic I most enjoyed writing is probably still Tam Len, because I loved the worldbuilding and the characters ended up taking on a life of their own, to the point that several plotty things just…resolved themselves in the end, entirely driven by the characters!

My favorite ship is…oh boy. I have loved so many ships in my time in this fandom. Coldwave maybe? What’s not to love about Coldwave—they’re queerplatonic partners in crime who would rather die than admit a Feeling. I adore them

My favorite femslash ship is probably something with Nora West-Allen? Nora/Spencer maybe…or Nora/Spencer/Joss—all of whom I wish I’d written more of (and had more plans for, before the muse forsook me!)

My favorite OT3 is Coldwestallen, because no matter which way you slice it somebody is getting ganged up on by two people who are too similar for anyone’s good, and the resulting dynamics are impeccable

My favorite non-romantic pairing is…well. If I wanted to rules-lawyer this, I’d say Coldwave, because the aro Len headcanon remains strong. However in the spirit of the question I’m gonna say Barry and his dads, both as they interact with each other and as they interact with Barry’s partners about him. There were a lot of meaty, messy dynamics there that I wish I had explored more (and that I had plans to, before the muse evaporated)

My favorite character to write is Leonard Snart, by a long shot. I vibe with his strange strange brain. He taught me so much in my time writing him. I still want to study him under a microscope. I’m going to hold onto him for a long time even if the hyperfixation is fading

My favorite neurodiversity fic (I love that this is a category, Soph) is Pride In The Little Things, with post-diagnosis feels. It’s rueful, because I think there’s often an element of that following a diagnosis, but it’s hopeful too

The fic I most clearly remember writing is Complication, a Coldflash-to-Coldwestallen fic that was meant to have more to it and got cut down for the sake of making a deadline. I’m pleased with how it turned out, but there’s another universe where it was a much messier slow burn

My favorite written-out-of-spite fic is Unplanned, in which I took out my frustrations with the ‘Mick’s head pregnancy’ plotline of Legends s6 (feat. supportive Gideon who understands what dysphoria is)

My most read fic is No Hero (No Less Loved), one of my older Coldflash fics—one I’m not overly attached to, in truth, but benefitted from being a popular pairing and having a lot of chapters to add to the hit count

My least read fic is Pride In The Little Things, my newest fic with a very rare pair indeed (Lita/Jerrie Rathaway, my and @blueelvewithwings lil ship). I didn’t expect it to get many hits at all, so seeing it with even this much interaction is surprising

The WIP I most regret not finishing is an unpublished sequel to Complication that would have built off the ideas I cut from the original fic, including appearances by Joe and Henry, and also explained why Len was so weird all throughout Complication. I hope to force myself through finishing it eventually!

My favorite gen fic is Found, a Rogues-as-family fic that was meant to set the stage for more in-depth stories that never happened. It still stands on its own pretty well though

My crackiest fic is Critical Fail, a ‘Team Flash plays D&D’ fic written at the behest of an IRL friend (who, to my knowledge, never ended up reading it—ah well, it was still fun!)

And a bonus holiday fic is By Candlelight, with Coldwestallen celebrating both a contemplative Hanukkah and a rowdy West family Christmas

Catching up a little bit on your blog, and I feel like a fraud not knowing one of the reasons Wentworth left was because of Snart’s relationship with Sara, because I hardcore hyper-fixated on Legends and Wentworth when it was airing. That also makes me upset for many reasons now.

But I also wanted to mention during that time period of my hyper-fixation, I never shipped ColdWave until I watched an edit on YouTube with Running Up That Hill as the song. So. Thought I’d add my random ColdWave moment to the Hozier anon’s.

I mean in your defense i also thought this was like publicly available knowledge that you could find at your local library so i guess in a lot of ways we're the opposite ends of this but ANYWAY

The thing about coldwave is if it's a song about losing someone you love or fighting to stay in a toxic romantic relationship that's them. And it turns out there's a lot of music about that so

Sorry it took me quite some time. My head is a mess and I hope my rambling make sense.

COLDFLASH

Coldflash suddenly walked into my life one day and just… never left. 

I heard that Arrowverse's shows were piles of burning shit, “never watch any of them”, “arrow started good but”, “the flash is soo dumb”. And I just shrugged and proceeded with my life. Until I stumbled on coldflash. I think it was a fic? Maybe a crossover because I rarely read unfamiliar fandoms. 

The next thing I remember was binge watching Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends. One can’t just watch one show, okay? I watched it all, cried for Len’s unfair ending and went to go through the whole ship tag xD (which I did. i may have started before i finished my catch up with the shows but who cares?)

Aside from my fixation, coldflash just works magic for me. It has everything I love about pairings. Chemistry? Check. Ability to work together? Check. Banter? Check. Same core values? Check. Age gap? Check. Sunshine and emotionally constipated? Check. “Leave him for his own good” vibes? Check. 

Coldflash suddenly became not just a ship. It became the ship. It became OTP. I was multishipper for most of my life and it was a strange new feeling. I tried to read other ships with Barry and my brain just went NOPE. Same with Len.

Now I’m more open to other ships with Barry but I can’t read fics with Len if he has no relationships with Barry. There must be something. There is always something. 

I don’t think I can voice better than this quote tbh:

"Barry and I are… complicated. As Cold and Flash, we're enemies. We don't pull our punches. Our battles are very real. We have caused one another some serious injuries in the past, and will likely do so again in the future. It’s part of the lives we lead and we both accept that. COLDWAVE

It’s interesting, I see how and why it’s working. But… I’m not into it. I love both Len and Mick and I like their partnership. I like how Len looks after Mick. That they have history together. But my stupid brain is like “oh, Len’s here, Mick’s here, where is Barry? Barry should come in right about now”. So yeah. I love it though when coldwave acts like a parental figures for Barry. I saw it once, I think? I would like to read more fics with this dynamic. 

COLDFLASHWAVE

Won’t lie it took me some time to see how wonderful this ship can be. How much I can love their collective dynamic. How silly and joyful they can be written together. I’m always hesitant about reading ot3. I hate love triangles. And was afraid that ot3 will be about a love triangle until they resolve all their issues and meet on the same page. Yada yada. Surely there are fics like that out there, but I found much more great stories about ot3s just navigating their own relationships, learning how to communicate and being together without envy and jealousy among them. So coldflashwave is like a blessing to my stupid messy heart. It gives so much joy! And I still have a ship tag to go through 👀
