Horror Movie of the Day: Tetsuo, the Iron man (鉄男, 1989)
Humans have a very strange habit of getting fixated on things. It’s only natural to try and focus our attention onto something, after all; to keep the mind occupied is healthy, and having a particular target of attention(be it a hobby or subject matter) makes this an easier task.
Not all fixations are made equal, however, and the more extreme they get the more dangerous they become. So when a metal fetishist gets accidentally run over by a salary man, the former’s undying soul decides to haunt the poor sap that had the audacity of trying to cover up the crime, condemning him to slowly become a man made of metal as it starts slowly protruding from his skin bit by bit, his life falling apart at the same time his body and mind do, for increasingly outlandish scenarios with metal people (or just his own body) come his way.
This underground fever dream by Shinya Tsukamoto picks the trans-humanism aspect of the cyberpunk genre, takes it down a notch and adds a level of body horror that would make Cronenberg proud. To call it gruesome is almost insulting to the word understatement, from the opening scenes you’re watching some peculiarly violent yet simultaneously sexually fetishistic imagery and the transgressive bombardment all but stops from there. And it’s fascinating… if you can put up with it, that is.
There’s a sense of creativity to the madness on screen that isn’t just about the visceral revulsion of gore and relentlessly sexual imagery but rather the captivating style and strange aesthetic that makes it fee artful. It’s almost like looking at a painting by H.R. Giger: nightmarish for sure, but there’s an unconventional sense of beauty to it with it’s aggressive juxtaposition of the flesh and the metal. Add to that a striking mix of industrial and techno by Chu Ishikawa and you have one hell of a mixture that you won't forget.
